Sonic Frontiers feels like a desperate breath of fresh air into the series.

It is not perfect by any means - cyberspace levels are hit or miss and some are genuinely AWFUL to go through and S rank (3-7 lmao), pop in is an issue though it's not a big deal to me, and there are a few minor bugs that I have encountered only twice in my 15 hours of playtime so far. However, everything else outshines it. The story is great with the help of Ian Flynn, known for the Sonic IDW comics. The voice acting is okay for the most part, Amy's in particular is wonderful. Character interactions are great and feel so much better than what we got in the last decade.

Exploring the open world is genuinely great. I always find myself exploring to see what else there is to find instead of going to the main goal. Last night, I said I'd only play for another hour. Before I knew it, I had played for 8. (Also I do not understand the complaints about the world feeling "empty", I think stuff being spaced out is necessary given how fast Sonic goes.)

But more or less, this game leaves a wonderful foundation for follow-ups. I cannot wait to see what the Sonic series brings in the future.

P.S. The soundtrack is FIRE and they got Kellin Quinn from Sleeping with Sirens on it. 100/10 banger OST.

While in the trailers the open world gameplay seemed automated, I found it to be actually really fun because you can kinda zone out and have fun with each one. Cyberspace isn't even that bad too because physics are your worst enemy in these stages. This soundtrack is also the best sonic soundtrack we have ever gotten. The highest point in this game is fighting the bosses, but I won't spoil it.

Be warned though, the boost and the physics are different from how they were in previous games....DIFFERENT but not terrible. Even though I do wish Sonic moved faster in the 2d stages, there' was nothing egregious in my playthrough.

The story is really good as well. Ian Flynn definitely delivered on the writing and the direction for the voice cast was spot on along with their performances. Soundtrack even for a Sonic game this OST stands out, fr the ambient sounds of the islands during exploration, to the various styles of high bpm breakbeat, edm and techno in cyberspace levels, to the absolute BANGER boss themes. The FRONTIERS OST is among the best in ther series and that's saying a lot, considering there are virtually no misses when it comes to music in this franchise.

Overall, any gripes I had with the game were personal and very minor. This is a great new step for the franchise. I LOVE THIS GAME!

I give it a 9 just because the true final boss of the game, is a bit disappointing that they turned the best opportunity to be ultra epic, in a bullet hell with 3 quick time events, anything besides that is just perfect.

As a long time Sonic fan, I've gone around 11 years without a good 3D mainline game now, and sonic frontiers absolutely delivers on being something super special with so much potential. I have played this game to 100% completion and outside of the secret hard mode final boss, I loved every minute. That final boss was awful though lol. This formula has so much potential, and I really hope SEGA and Sonic Team look to refine it into something really amazing. Sonic Frontiers is a beautiful step forward for the blue blur and his friends. The combat is varied and satisfying, the story is mysterious and emotional, the voice acting is new while still feeling familiar, and the soundtrack is glorious, whether it's the soft violins of Kronos Island, the EDM music for Cyberspace, or the heavy metal for when you're up against the Titans! In Sonic Frontiers, it's up to you to save Sonic's friends and rescue them from cyberspace, all while trying to overpower the new threats that await. Unlike past Sonic games where you'd speed through levels, Frontiers takes a new approach: Open Zone, and it really pays off! As for the more linear reach the goal levels, they're a part of the new Cyberspace levels. While it's a little hard to get a hold of the, admittedly clunky controls, once you do you'll be S-ranking Cyberspace levels at the fastest speeds possible! Visually, the game looks fairly average, however you can still capture some gorgeous scenery and beautiful views from the Starfall Islands. There are a few gripes I have here and there with this game, but it doesn't knock any points, and they're more nitpicks than anything.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a wonderfully crafted game by SEGA and Sonic Team, and is the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations! From its fun and unique combat, to the beautifully designed open zones, to its fast paced Cyberspace stages, to its incredible story, its music, and its beautiful visuals, Sonic Frontiers is worth your time and is a very thrilling game!

7/10 is a good score metacritic’s color system just sucks. I’d highly recommend giving this game a shot. A lot like legends Arceus, it still has a long way to go to perfecting its gameplay, but these are really solid grounds to work off of, and it would be a big mistake if Sega didn’t use this game as a blueprint for future games, like they did with Sonic Unleashed before it

The way the characters interacted with each other was my personal highlight as it was such a fresh start from the last decade on how they were written, THIS is Sonic's true world. How the world has been portrayed has left me amazed with all the previous games referenced to make it all an official cannon and not a cheesy reference like previous games have done. (even a Sonic Boom reference was mentioned which caught me by surprise, makes me wonder what they will do with that in the next game)

Only problem with the game was the cyberspace control, and i was going to mention the reuse of previous games for level design but it was KINDA justified from the last island where sage basically mentions that, so I felt like I couldn't really complain as some stages where original, just wish there was more of them.

But I will just say they better see these user scores over the critics because WE know what we want in a sonic game WE are the ones who know sonic better than anyone else so WE know what makes sonic good.

Cheers to a bright future for sonic.

There were some sections that I felt were rather problematic but in general the gameplay was fun and both the music and visuals made me want to keep running around the areas. However, my main issues with the game were that some of the story mini games made me feel an unbridled rage and some situations left me clueless as to what I needed to do with the hint system being nearly useless. Of these situations my least favorite events were, one, where sonic leapt off a raised bridge and you had to do a freefall in order to reach the ground, however, you were timed and the slightest mistake could leave you low on time or failing the quest meaning you had to actively choose to avoid the orange rings and springs and just speed dive to the ground. And my second instance that left me befuddled was the first time I encountered the enemy that just straight up drowns you. It may just be a skill issue but I didn't realize I had to stomp to escape the enemy until I got the clue in the game over sequence. I had simply assumed I needed to jump more and faster in order to break out of the thing. That said, even with these issues I had a truly wonderful time and after taking a quick break from the game I will be returning to it to play it more. Also if you own the game on PC I would greatly recommend installing Hedgemod manager in order to disable the camera locking onto the umbrella enemy. It's a major quality of life improvement. Expand

Now another aspect is the brand new and interesting combat paired with a bunch of varied enemies to fight. While not all of them are fun to fight against, I was always excited to see a new enemy, mainly the mini bosses, to see their cool designs and how they'd fight. I didn't expect much from the combat but it was still quite enjoyable, especially the boss fights in each area.

It's not a game you would play for a deep story or for its intricate mechanics. It's simply a good time, and I had a very good time with it. I certainly can't wait for the Sonic Team to expand and improve on this concept.

The worst part about this game was letting IGN be the first to premier the game, since they had a presumably buggier, older build and played it horribly. I do generally enjoy the game a lot but I won't deny that it has some issues I hope get worked on for the game because they do have a good base here for future games... The issues I had being the pop in and some animations not being of the same quality of others and the combat not being as fleshed out as they implied it would be.

If you're a sonic fan this game is absolutely fantastic. I had so much fun platforming, gaining tokens, and doing "some" of the cyber space levels. The only problems I really had with this game was the pop-in, and other than that, it's a pretty good game. I'd give it another run through.

From the Open Zone, to the Cyberspace Stages, to the incredible Soundtrack, Sonic Frontiers knocks it out of the park. The speed feels amazing, and with the ability to adjust different aspects, you can go for that extremely high precision from older 3D titles like Sonic Adventure 2, and Day Stages in Sonic Unleashed, or go for a more slow, and methodical style, similar to Night Stages in Sonic Unleashed, or Shadow's style of combat in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), or even something in between. Each option is extremely smooth and tight, just done at different speeds The soundtrack is one of the greatest I've ever heard, especially in the current landscape of more cinematic OSTs, and Orchestral tracks, the hard Mid-2000s rock brings a breath of fresh air, and an adrenaline rush like no other. Tracks like "Undefeatable", "Break Through it All", and "One Way Dream" are sure to make Sonic fans think about the days where Crush 40 was making Sonic OSTs some of the most iconic in gaming. Without getting into spoilers for the main story, the story itself is amazing, down to the more mature voice acting, to the world building, and even some simple character interactions. The boss fights are also a treat to behold. Each one is accompanied by this adrenaline pumping track, and the sheer amount of power you feel in each fight is enough to put final boss fights from not only other Sonic games, but many other games in general to shame. I played Frontiers in the Nintendo Switch system, and found very few instances of glitches, or structures popping in that aren't also present in some of the massive AAA games of the modern day. My only complaint at the moment with the game is how you cannot re-fight bosses after already beating them, but I am more than willing to replay through the game just to re-experience those fights. Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who is even remotely curious, or even if you aren't. I have adored every second of this game, and I am willing to bet you will too. Expand

This game is the most fun I’ve had with a Sonic game since Unleashed, Colors & Generations. The combos are so satisfying more than the Werehog (or at least the HD Version), The story is great & the atmosphere is amazing! The boss fights are the most fun I’ve ever had in a Sonic game ever, especially Giganto & The second to last boss that I won’t name for the sake of spoilers. The only weak point of the game is kind of Cyberspace, I was hoping these would be a mix of Colors & Unleashed stages as those are the best of the Boost Era, but nope it’s closer to an Arcade style Forces level with Lost World physics. It’s not all bad though as getting S ranks can be fun! (Except 1-2). All in all this is most fun I’ve ever had with Sonic in 10 years! Please pick this game up!

BOTH SIDES.Think for yourself, but hopefully i can give you a eager attempt at a review thats trying to be as unbiased as possible. Its absolutely hilarious to see people who give this game a 10 and say something like "its absolutely sad to see people review bombing this game." Sir, you're doing the same thing that review bombers are doing. LYING TO YOURSELF AND THE PUBLIC. Story is like an 8 but the storytelling is a 6. It doesn't try to do too much with the scope, but in that scope it doesn't do it well enough with disjointed storytelling. Dialogue writing is like an 8, voice acting...Sonic is like an 8.5 but everyone else is like a 7. Sage would be better but the whole idea is to be monotone and I believe that doesn't deserve anything more than a 7 on principle alone. Sonic doing something new is an 8 but the same old jank that has plagued 3D Sonic since its inception is a 6. Music is a solid 8.5. Enemy and boss graphic design is an 8 but their actual combat execution is a 6.5. Why does the 3rd island suddenly change up how every single open zone puzzle switches to 2.5D? It was fine, should have had a healthy balance throughout the whole game instead of just shoving them in this one jarring stage. Why does the game require you to climb a wall instead of running up it for the first time when you're 3 minutes into climbing an objective tower and 75% though the game? Repeating the SAME EXACT formula for each of the four main open zones is not 10 out of 10 gameplay. Its a 6, but ill give the overall gameplay design a 7.5 because their is just an absolute insane amount of rails to grind and springs to bounce on. Don't get me wrong, Sonic Frontiers on surface interaction level is a fun experience. As a whole game package is stumbles on its final execution and lacks the polish of anything worthy of earning over a 7. Aiming means nothing in fishing; 7. Just like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, this game is a semi-rushed and a not fully realized concept game. I am ok with that. Call it what it is, a valiant attempt at trying something new.
Put more time in the oven an some polish, maybe an actual final boss and call me back in a couple years. Anyone who gives this game a 10 but complains about how other review outlets are lying to you about what it actually deserves needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and probably talk to a therapist about how to become a critical free-thinking individual.
This should be more a review of the Sonic fanbase than of Sonic Frontiers. Anyway, the game took me about 20 hours to earn all the achievements and complete the game. Included in that time: At least twice waiting 7ish minutes to do a night time objective to uncover my map because there is no way to change time of day. It also includes roughly FOURTY MINUTES total time to upgrade all 198 points into Speed and Ring Capacity because you can only do one point at a time and the whole process takes like 12 seconds for 1 point increase. Did someone playtest that part? Surely 10/10 quality.
I think what you see I'm getting at is a lot of these things that are going into this game are great. If it could just execute and stick the landing it could be an 8.5 game. A lot of the gameplay issues that show up are the same issues for the past 2 decades in 3D Sonic. Focus on fixing that core gameplay problem then you can candy coat it. 6.8/10 I can't put 6.8 as a rating. Again this is a 6.8. Think for yourself judge for yourself in everything you do.

Feels like the past 10 years of whatever the hell Pontaff were on about are finally over, the OST is one of my favorites, I really appreciate the overall tone and atmosphere.
The islands are all pretty well designed and movement works well. There's some jank because of the mesh collisions, there's definitely some things to overlook, but the Open Zone is a solid 9 for me.
It's comparable to the good open world games like BoTW and Elden Ring, imo.
It's not really fair to call it open world, cause it is indeed an open zone thing, it's one of those things you really have to try in order to understand.
The game controls better than it looks like from videos, mostly because some animations are pretty stiff.
The Cyberspace stages are 50/50, some are extremely lame, the 2D ones specifically, some range from good to OK.
The best ones come from SA2, obviously. The few original ones are okay, I wish they dared more.
The controls in Cyberspace are "fine" in 3D but completely ass in 2D.
Cyberspace is a very small portion of the game nevertheless, and 100% that side took me 40 minutes at most.

The SuperSonic boss fights are the best in the series, hands down, wish there was a boss rush mode.

Overall? Pretty good game, definitely my GOTY. Adventure fans this is for you, kinda.

A fantastic game all around, it does so many things right and is an amazing step for sonic the hedgehog moving forward! Hope that Sega don't immediately drop this new formula after this because it's truly something special

Sonic really does feel great to control in this one, possibly the best ground control he has ever had. It is just fun to move around as sonic let alone doing anything else. However the main bulk of the game is spent acquiring different collectibles through platforming challenges and other means like puzzles and combat, which while might not seem to mesh together too well from the outside, it actually works really well in practice!

The combat is a huge step up from any sonic game and the enemies have depth, while the moves themselves are fun to pull off. Sonic has many different ways to approach enemies, like the tower who you can fight by taking out his lower bits first or you can climb him when he presents the opening and take out the top, instantly destroying every bottom but making him vulnerable if he isn't already dead.

The cyberspace levels are ok overall, and the physics aren't nearly as good as the open world, however it is still pretty fun. The 2d sky sanctuary level kinda sucks tho as generations classic sonic level design just doesn't work in this game. The cyberspace stages truly shine towards the end of the game!

The bosses are easily the best in the series, and that's as much as I'll say without spoilers! You want to experience this yourself!

The music is amazing as usual, one of the best sonic osts with tracks to fit every situation. The visuals are nice but the pop in is a major issue that should be fixed with a potential frontiers 2

Overall this game is worth your time and money, you won't be dissapointed! Have fun, and enjoy because Sega finally got it right!

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
