If Elden Ring is 7.8, Sonic Frontiers is -34.5. Sega should've stayed in the past when it was actually good. Now their name is forever destroyed. Welcome in the BioWare team.

I have a lot of nitpicks and complaints but the game is still incredibly fun. Sonic feels great to control, the islands (for the most part) are a blast to explore, and the dialogue is a huge step up from previous games. Overall it's a good first step in a new direction, and just a fun time in general, but they need to improve upon it heavily to keep fans interested, Make the next game a lot more difficult, make it more consistently fun, make the story more engaging, and give us more post game content after completing the main campaign. Overhyped. Games doesn't deserve more than a 6/10. It's maybe a good step forward, but it's not enough. Feels like they didn't finish the game and just released it for the 'November Tuesday'. They didn't even marketed it right, so nobody even notice that it was on Tuesday, so what's the point?

They could do so much better. They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but

They could do so much better.

They wanted the same impact like 'Sonic Adventure' did, but if you compere this two, Frontiers is soooo bad.
Like all the stage has the same old design, and that fine for some levels, but not ALL OF THEM. Not even single one new design. When in SA every lvl was different. In SA it was interesting to replay the stages, and you could play some new missions after completing the game. Here almost all stages you could beet at 100% from the first try.
But if you read about first open-world Sonic game, and decided not to finish some island at 100% you couldn't come back later, cuz it's not open-world. And after game is finished, that's it. You can only start a new game.

And the whole thing with collect memories is super boring. They could do them like 10-20 instead of 100, just hide them and make interesting to look for. Like give us the real memories of characters, instead of just some figures.
And why the only two female characters both have Hearts as they memories figures, while Tails and Knuckles have unique ones? Probably cuz they stop working on the game after 3 island. Or mb they are just sexists and didn't come up with something interesting for girls but hearts. Idk.

They should did Amy, Knuckles and Tails playable from the start, to show us what happening to them. And the fishing part looking so stupid.... I loved playing as Big in SA, but here it looks ridiculous. But i should agree, it's useful, cuz at the last island you would be soo bored of the game, and you wont wanna look for the memories for the 4 time, so catch some fish and trade for the memories instead is sooo good to finish earlier.

And some Koko instead of Chao? Really? Nah, chao deserve something better than this game anyway.
I could say so much more, but im just pissed that game has 8 score and someone even voting for the game of the year. It would be so lame if developers would see that people liked it and will continued to make games like this.

I boss (solo titani) tutti divertenti l ultimo un po' deludente ma comunque bello da affrontare e si redime in ciò che viene dopo.

My only complaint is the visuals which are incredibly lacking.. this feels like it needed a bit more time in the oven. Character models are too simplistic, environments although fun to navigate have extreme pop in, textures are high quality but the geometry and population of foliage is simplistic. Rain which is what you'll first experience in the game looks god awful, it looks like they overlayed animated noise over top of the image. However despite all these visual gripes the gameplay saves it completely, the sonic stages are exremely fast and short which makes you comfortable with restarting from the beginning to get a better time score. solving all the sometimes simplistic sometimes challenging puzzles around the world and climbing to great heights is thrilling and addictive.

I really really hope you don't miss out on this game like i almost did. I'm an old man now but i remember the days of sonic goofily saving the day from dr eggman in sonic adventure 1 and 2, this feels like that game all grown up.

Perhaps I'm playing a different Sonic Frontiers compared to all the sonic fanbois, bots and fake review accounts artificially boosting the score, because this game isn't that good at all, sure the graphics and soundtrack are pretty good but what do you expect from a current gen console like the PS5? As for the game, it had promise but falls flat pretty quickly with graphical glitches all over the place, the camera is terrible often the biggest source of frustration, it basically can't keep it sometimes, occasionally will change position on you confusing the player which leads to more frustration and generally is very bad for the game.

The gameplay on some levels is so fast that it becomes actually frustrating as the the elements are clearly designed for twitch reflexes otherwise you can fail very easily, sometimes you can fail on some cyberspace levels due to bugs and glitches too, trying to get that perfect S-Rank run and have one minor thing slow you up gets old fast, would have actually been better to slow the speed down a bit to give the player some extra breathing room when making near pixel perfect jumps from rails to rails or trying to perfectly time a jump and miss.

The game itself isn't a true open world game, its based around fairly large and somewhat linear islands in which you can do certain things in what order you want, but you are still required to complete highly linear typical 'cybserspace' sonic levels which are not too bad, except the control system makes it much harder than it needs to be, instead of sticking with standard move sets it opts for more moves than a street fighter character and gets progressively more annoying later.

The open world part is exactly what you expect, an open barren world with basically theme park rails, jumppads and everything associated with Sonic all over the place, it looks fairly stupid if I'm being honest because its basically everywhere, that increases with tricky perfect jumps needed as you progress.

Sound and music are excellent though, typical levels have some unique music tracks with some that are definitely banging, voice acting is also on par it's just a shame that the rest of the game doesn't live up to expectations.

Finally, Sonic Frontiers is a prime example of the Sega and Sonic fans rushing in to defend their champion from a lackluster game, the same way Zelda or Mario fans do the same. Sonic Frontiers is merely an average game that could have been much better but suffers from a myriad of issues which severely affect the fun factor and cause unnecessary frustration for the player, there is no excuse for shoddy camera angles or it failing to keep up with your character, especially in 3D platformers where you need to be able to see clearly where you are jumping, and/or a camera that keeps up with your character.

Don't listen to the negative reviews from no-name gaming sites and Youtubers and their little fan boys who have no idea what they are talking about, the consensus among most critics and users is that this is a very good Sonic game, as it should be. It is easily the best 3D Sonic game since Sonic Generations.

    Pros:
    1. Very snappy/responsive controls, even when Sonic is going fast. It is clear that Sonic Team has put in the work to fine tune the controls for 3D Sonic.

    2. The 60 fps frame-rate is buttery smooth and load times are extremely fast for the PS5.

    3. The story is probably the best Sonic game story since Sonic Adventure 2. Don't expect Mass Effect level storytelling, but for a Sonic game is surprisingly good.

    4. The fun factor for this game is off the charts. It is so much fun blasting around at top speeds and chaining together movement across springs, rails, boosters, etc. Since I have got Sonic to Level 99 speed, I have spent a ton of time just blasting around the open environments. I can't think of another open world (open zone) game that allows you to blaze through environments at speeds like this.

    5. I really enjoyed the sprinkling in of 2D sections, both in the open world and the Cyberspace levels. It gave a nostalgic feel to Sonic hearkening back to the classic 2D era. Also, platforming in 2D is different than platforming in 3D so it helped add variety that way. I genuinely don't understand the criticism of the 2D sections in this game, they were a lot of fun.

    6. Speaking of Cyberspace stages, they were a great add-on to the game and helped add variety to the game outside of the open zone gameplay. Sonic Team should absolutely keep these types of levels in their future "open zone" Sonic games.

    7. The graphics are very good, not Horizon Zero Dawn level, but it looked great running through these environments. I also appreciated the addition of what I'd call "mini-biomes" within each open zone. Without giving too much away, you will find oasis, wetlands, waterfalls, lakes, forests, fields of flowers, etc. sprinkled throughout these open zones. I hope Sonic Team continues add these types of mini-biomes within their open worlds in future games.

    8. I thought the RPG elements were excellent, and the way they are utilized it encouraged you to explore the open zones to obtain Koko and other power-ups to increase Sonic's speed, attack, defense and max ring count. I found myself searching around every nook and cranny in the open world to find Koko so I could max out Sonic's speed. The way they meshed together the RPG elements and exploration of the open zone is great, and I hope they continue to do that.

    9. The combat is pretty fun. I enjoyed the added move-sets and combos that Sonic can utilize to bash apart enemies and bosses. It isn't particularly challenging, even on Hard mode, but this is a Sonic game, not Dark Souls. The focus is on speed and fun, not chucking your controller into the TV because a particular boss pummeled you into the dirt for a 20th straight time.

    10. The fishing mini-game was a lot of fun, and with the Cyberspace stages was a nice way to add variety to the game. The addition of a Fishopedia and Eggman tapes was great too. In the future, it would be nice to see the fishing mini-game have its own biome. How about a fishing zone in Aquatic Ruin Zone from Sonic 2 (Sega Genesis).

    Cons:
    1. Some of the mini-bosses and Titan bosses can be a bit tedious, especially with the controls, but luckily this is more of a minor nuisance and isn't game breaking.

    2. On some minor occasions, Sonic's controls won't necessarily respond. Such as when boosting Sonic comes to a instant stop even though there is no object in his way, or you hit a wall for a wall jump but Sonic just falls off for no reason. Again, minor nuisances that don't occur often and not game breaking.

    3. No Photo Mode. My God, these types of Sonic games need a photo mode. A nice added feature of a photo mode too would be the option to remove the rails, springs, and other artificial objects so you can get a nice scenic photo/screenshot without the clutter.

    4. This is subjective, but I didn't enjoy the blocky cyberspace background in the Cyberspace Stages. Part of the fun of Sonic games is speeding through environments with the natural scenery in the background. I know there is a story element to why it is there, but Sonic Team needs to take these types of backgrounds and nuke it to the moon. It detracts away from the experience.

    5. Stop reusing Green Hill and Sky Sanctuary for the billionth time. Don't get me wrong, I love the hearkening back to classic Sonic levels, but there are so many out there to bring into the modern era. How about reviving Emerald Hill, Aquatic Ruin,Starlight Zone, Mystic Cave, etc.

This is arguably the best step in the right direction Sonic can take. Sonic has managed to reinvent himself in an amazing way. Only gave it a 9, though, due to minor grievances such as Cyberspace levels not being too great for the most part, and cause of an upgrade system that for whatever reason has 2 skill upgrades be instantaneous with multiple level raises at a time and the other 2 being done one level at a time. Otherwise, this is arguably the best 3D Sonic game of all time. Yes, even better than Generations.

Sure there is popping if you have an open zone game where the protagonist runs at a very high speed. However, this game surprised me. It is so fun and relaxing. Sure it has simple mechanics in some situations, but it keeps the essence clear of what it is Sonic. Hope this is the beginning of something great for the blue hedgehog.

It is hard for me to stay completely invested in the game for long periods of time because of its excessive simplicity, reliance on old ideas, and story-related struggles; however, behind its flaws lies a beautiful and accessible story, some impressive gameplay moments and a shockingly gripping and awesome soundtrack, all of which manage to buoy its other, more cumbersome features.

My main gripe with this game is that in the face of some beautiful story ideas, Sega's unwillingness to have the characters' movements and expressions match up more convincingly to their dialogue really brings down some truly powerful moments. Sonic and his friends have what is easily the best dialogue and interactions in the entire series, and the moments that exemplify this are bogged down by facial movements and body language that feel clunky and over-exaggerated. Additionally, the occasional long pauses in dialogue are shockingly destructive to the impact of the characters' words. If you can suffer through how stilted the characters sometimes look while delivering this dialogue, you will find something to enjoy in their meaningful interactions - it's not Shakespeare, but it can be quite touching at moments.

The main gameplay loop - one part Ubisoft-style open-world traversal with insultingly simple puzzle-solving, one part familiar speedy platforming, and one part grand boss battles with. occasional quick-time events - is a mixed bag. The open world is aesthetically gorgeous, but the collection of various trinkets and tokens within it grows tiresome fairly quickly. And while definitely engaging and possibly the best of any Sonic game in recent memory, the bite-sized "Cyberspace" levels in which you engage in linear platforming are over in a flash, and feel overdone and too familiar by this point in Sonic's multi-decade existence. The boss battles are where the game's best facets are on full display: The spectacle is outrageous; the overall giddiness I got out of seeing the sub-5-foot hedgehog pal tear apart a gigantic, towering cyber-mechanical monstrosity is undeniable, and the music leans hard into Sonic's reputation for angsty edginess.

Speaking of the music, I believe that is, as is often the case with 3D Sonic games, Frontiers' single strongest asset. The open world's sombre piano ballads, Cyberspace's toe-tapping drum 'n' bass, and the boss battles' anthemic pop-punk/screamo bangers (some of which feature Sleeping with Sirens' Kellin Quinn on vocals, no less) really help this game's various tones all feel balanced, with each part of the game feeling so much more authentic and powerful. because of the excellence of the music.

Overall, Frontiers is saved, in my mind, by its more daring story decisions and absolutely gorgeous soundtrack. Otherwise, the game feels unable to escape Sega's looming shadow of nostalgia-baiting and gatekeeping of new ideas. If Sega decides to keep handing the reins to new writers, and continues welcoming new ideas from people who are clearly passionate about Sonic (especially mechanically), I can see future games in the franchise becoming so much more than what Frontiers is.

In sum: Sonic Frontiers is held back in many ways, but offers some really excellent moments. It is a subjectively enjoyable game, and will especially appeal to former Sonic fans who were left feeling disenfranchised and disillusions by the hedgehog's prior outings.

+ Titan bossfights while undercooked like a lot of stuff in Frontiers are really hype
+ Combat while repetitive and button mashy has its moment of fun to be had

    Now for the negatives:
    - REALLY bad animations that look incredibly unfinished and very goofy, due to how low effort they are
    - The constant pop in is so bad it makes the first Wipeout games sweat nervously
    - Constant floating rails, platforms etc. look incredibly distracting and look like somebody went into a lvl designer and slapped around a bunch of assets to not make the open world look empty and shallow
    - Cyberspace is trash all around from it's controls, to lvl themes, to no original lvl layouts
    - The game is way too easy even on hard difficulty
    - 2/3 of the open world activities are flat out boring
    - WHY IS THERE 2D IN AN OPEN WORLD GAME??
    - The physics feel like something straight out of 06

Overall: Frontiers is a REALLY undercooked game that needed at least 1 more year of dev time, regardless there is some enjoyment to be had with it. It's nothing special, nor is it anything God awful like forces is.

Sonic Team is definitely taking a bold step in a new direction for the Sonic franchise. The change in environment and tonal shift for the series is striking, with low saturation colors and high pastel hues replacing the vibrant primary colors of classic Sonic levels. The game's progression loop, while sounding convoluted, is satisfying and flows naturally, with mini-bosses, Cyber Space levels, challenges, and platforming sections to uncover memory tokens and upgrade items. Sonic Frontiers is undoubtedly the best 3D Sonic game in more than a decade, but that's not saying much considering the quality of the previous 3D titles we've gotten within those years.

The game's inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is apparent, and while it works well within the game's sci-fi conceit, it doesn't play anything like Link's five-year-old adventure. The game's open-world design is not as expansive as Breath of the Wild's, but it's enough to keep Sonic fans engaged. The game's map, complete with various markers, is not something that players would feel compelled to look at, as the game does an excellent job of guiding players toward points of interest. However, some may find the game's exploration and progression loop repetitive, with the same basic gameplay loop on each island. Not to mention how egregious the pop in are within the game, which are very persistent throughout my 27 hours of playing through it

Despite its flaws, Sonic Frontiers offers a decent and sometimes satisfying fun experience for fans of the series. The game's unique environment and tonal shift, coupled with the new semi-open world concept, make it stand out from its predecessors. The game's progression loop, while sounding convoluted, works well and flows naturally. Sonic Frontiers is worth playing for fans of the series and platformer fans alike, but it may not be enough to win over those who have been turned off by the series' previous. I only hope that sega actually takes the proper steps forward and stops repetting mistakes that they clearly should've learned from over a decade ago

It has a great story, fun open zones with lots to do, Cyberspace while very flawed is still fun imo, fantastic combat, and it has the best boss battles in the series. Sad people will still go out of their way to hate and meme on the blue blur but that was bound to happen regardless of this games quality.

The best way to describe it is Breath of the Wild but with Sonic. If you liked that and you like Sonic, you’ll love this! Deserves a higher rating

And then what? Not a side quest, or anything else to explore or to do. Half of this feels like it is testing the waters, and the other half has some genuine merits. I was impressed by its OST, and some of the models. The bosses themselves are tedious, not necessarily hard but definitely requires some thinking, which I appreciate. The final boss, very unpleasant. I can't fall in love with this game. But I am glad people do and it is improving Sonic's reputation. It just is not for me and I don't have an interest in replaying it. Expand

Story was pretty good, the gameplay is fun but i feel like it gets repetitive over time. I don’t think the game is empty but rather has a large field so that you can run on bc it’s a sonic game. However the pop ins really halt the experience. Story is good and the antagonist is interesting. Overall game is pretty good but the messy pop ins and bugs brings down the score for me. I'll keep this short and sweet.

negatives: lots of pop in and it can be jarring. The story is not great and is pretty confusing like a kingdom hearts game. Pros: Huge environment s for sonic to run around. Fun combat with variety in moves and enemies. Well done boss battles. Great platforming throughout the game. Cyber levels are a blast are a nice change of pace from open world. Fishing

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Frontiers is a good game, lovely and with an amazing storyline, the only thing i didn't enjoy was cyberspace controls, other than that, i would love to see a New game + or a boss fight replayabily in the future.

Also true final boss might feel anticlimatic.

Sonic Frontiers is okay, and definitely a step up from Sonic Forces, but there's a lot about this game that misses the mark. Firstly, the story. It looked intriguing in trailers, and Ian Flynn was even hired to be a part of it, but as a whole it's really not that interesting. Sonic and friends find themselves on these islands and trapped in cyberspace somehow, but Sonic manages to escape cyberspace and starts to track his friends and the chaos emeralds down. As he does so, the main villain of game named Sage follows him and continuously tells him to give up as he won't accomplish what he's trying to do. Sage has a really cool design and I was interested to learn more about her, but again, there really isn't much to grab onto. Eggman created her to obtain the chaos emeralds or stop Sonic or something, but that's all she really boils down to. There are moments later in the story where she wonders if she can see the positives in people the way that Sonic does with Tails, Knuckles and Amy, but that's about it. The story boils down to Sonic finds all the chaos emeralds on an island, defeats the big bad boss on said island, repeat 4 more times and then the game ends. It's surprisingly mundane, especially considering this game's scope and who worked on the story in the first place. What doesn't help things is this game's voice acting, which is terrible. I have no idea how this happened, especially considering mainstays like Roger Craig Smith and Mike Pollock still voiced the characters in this game, but it feels like the script was handed over to the voice actors of the Horizon games and it makes everything feel inconsequential.

In terms of gameplay, it's decent, but definitely not the greatest thing out there. Sonic Frontiers shifted its focus to "open zone" gameplay, where you have multiple large environments to run around, find collectibles and complete objectives. In concept, it's very similar to a game like Super Mario Odyssey, just not as fun. The environments look pretty, but there aren't many landmarks to distinguish areas from each other and there is a TON of pop in, which I'm assuming is there to help the game run smoothly but it's still distracting. There are various collectibles that unlock different things, and many of them are obtained by doing short platform challenges or rail grinding, and that's most of the gameplay loop. Find a spring or a set of rings, run around a bit and you have a collectible. It's consistent with what 3D Sonic games are all about, it's just repetitive and not very enthralling. There are also cyberspace stages to find scattered around each of the islands, and these are short stages that play like Sonic Unleashed, Colors and Generations. These can be fun but at the start of the game they're UNBEARABLY slow, and for some reason the second cyber stage is almost impossible to get the S rank on. If you want to make the cyber stages more enjoyable, you have to upgrade your speed, and I don't understand why this is a thing. Sonic's meant to be fast, so why make us go out of our way to make the stages fun? There are multiple other things that can be upgraded as well, such as ring capacity, strength, defense, and a skill tree for Sonic's combat abilities. This is another main part of the game: there are enemies scattered all around the islands and some can be defeated with a simple homing attack, though others require certain abilities to be defeated. The combat in this game is alright, but it can be almost entirely avoided when you upgrade yourself enough. The one exception to this is the various minibosses, which can sometimes be a massive pain but they drop more valuable collectibles, so there's at least a bit more of an incentive to go after them. Then there's the task of acquiring the chaos emeralds. Firstly, this is something you have to do for every single island because after each major boss fight, the chaos emeralds are suddenly scattered around again, which is DUMB. There's not even a story reason for this, you just need to get them again. And while most of them are collected in a similar fashion, at least one will need to be collected by doing arbitrary minigames that feel like a waste of time. Plus, to actually reach the bosses, Sonic will sometimes need to do something completely out of left field like a claw grabbing minigame, Ikaruga, or pinball. These also make no sense and I have no idea why they're here. The Ikaruga gameplay is even the final boss of this game! The bosses in general are alright, and they have great music, though they can be frustrating if you don't know what you're doing, and the game sometimes doesn't tell you what to do. Overall, Sonic Frontiers definitely had potential as a new version of a Sonic game, but it feels like a prototype of a better game and after finishing it, I had no reason to go back to it. This wasn't the game Sonic Team needed to rejuvenate Sonic, and that bums me out.

The game is more of a glorified tech demo, only reason it has a high user score is because of sonic fanboys high on copium, it has good ideas but terrible execution and design.

Unexpected and raw diamond! Never played a Sonic game before. Did not expect a lot from this one. The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
