This game has one of the best visuals, I ever seen in any video game of this year. I think this was worth the 5 year wait. Sonic Frontiers has the best boss fights such as the fight with the huge titan on Kronos Island and the music was on top, the music is fire. All I can say this game is way better than any Sonic game that was recently released.

The open world is very fun to explore and is full of things to do. Sonic controls better in 3D than any of the more recent 3D titles. As for cyberspace; the 3D ones are mostly great, the 2D stages are alright. Overall the game is great but the cyberspace stages are a bit uninspired in terms of design and visuals.

As a 90's die hard Sonic fan through all mediums of the blue hedgehog. My love for sonic started to die with just about everyone in the world, after sonic generations. It faltered many times before but after Generations, Sonic lost what made Sonic... Sonic... Gone was the flair, ambition, and magic that made Sonic seem literally, way past cool.... Originally I chalked it up to just growing out of it by the early 2010's... Hitting 20 I thought meh, Sonic just isnt it. With Lost world and Boom on release making me not even want to get the game, let alone play them. Sonic became childish.... Lifeless... broken... and in 2017 here comes Mania.... WOOOOO a return to form! Well.... on the 2D front.... And I played it to hell. and here comes Forces later that year... Will 3D Sonic come back to Form? Will I return to my childhood, will I feel "Cool" playing it?
Short answer. NO. Sonic Forces was trash. But I will give it credit for one thing. It made me realize me not liking it, had nothing to do with me not loving Sonic anymore... It had everything to do with Sonic being just again, fundamentally lost. It made me realize I desperately wanted a "good" Sonic game. But yeah, Sega was probably not going to deliver that to us anytime soon...
In comes 2021 with the Frontiers reveal, to the trailer, something seemed different. It looked like Sega for better or worse was taking a shot, at something outside the plastic box.. And my instinct was to be guarded... but be excited! Through all the press release, and trailers, and demo showcases... I let my self get hype, but knew this might be the nail in the coffin... But there was a chance...

Playing Frontiers. Playing as Sonic.... FEEEELS like playing Sonic.
Never have I played a Sonic game and felt like I was Sonic The Hedgehog. Controls are tight, world is huge. You go FAST. Obstacles are fun. Momentum feels good. The world is beautiful. The story is MYSTERIOUS. The soundtrack. Is FANTASTIC. The Cyber space levels are INCREDIBLE.... The Boss fights are UNBELIEVEABLE.

If you are a Sonic Fan. This is it, you will love this game. The promised land is here. And hopefully Sega continues to build and iron out off of this formula...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A colossal step in the right direction. Sonic Team finally got their act together and decided to steer Sonic back closer to his roots. The story is much more grounded, the cheesy and corny jokes from past titles are toned down tremendously. The music absolutely slaps, the feeling of speed from just running around the islands and the surprisingly fun and versatile combat moves keep me playing the game. The games atmosphere is very calming and relaxing, with fishing being the calmest. The story is a huge step in the right direction, they’ve established that all past games and the comics are canon. They give Egg-man and Sonic actual characterization in this game, along with the rest of the cast. Overall I’ve really enjoyed this game and was pleasantly surprised by Sonic Team’s efforts. It’s no Unleashed, but it’s better than any past title in the last 10 years. Expand

Sonic Frontiers is a lot of things, but the only consistent thing about it is how inconsistent it is. Buried under a flurry of glitches, the poor and sometimes unresponsive controls, the horribly drab story, and an artistic direction that hardly fits the series at all, is the faint *flicker* of a game that sounds good on paper, but in actual execution is just a mess.

Sonic himself has no actual sense of weight or inertia; I never properly felt like Sonic was even apart of this world, as most of his movement would either be completely unresponsive, or leave me a little disoriented. It especially terrible during boss fights, with him constantly falling off, or sometimes even THROUGH enemies and bosses. It was borderline impossible to avoid getting Sonic stuck on things, or keep him from slipping through terrain, while the character controller tries desperately to fight with the poorly curated worlds they've put Sonic in.

Combat is even less engaging, being a step down from Unleashed 14 years back. Sonic's skill tree only expands to around 10 moves, few of which are actually more effective at taking out specific enemies than the last, comprised of simple two-button inputs that play a cutscene of Sonic attacking as opposed to actual involved combat. Compared to the Werehog's 40 move loadout, Sonic Frontiers' combos feels as repetitive as you could get, there's little room for experimenting in satisfying ways.

The game's story is only unique to the series in that it practically wears obnoxious melodrama as a badge of honor. If it's not Sonic characters singing their deep-voiced personal woes to you, it's them randomly calling back to previous adventures in an attempt to pad out an otherwise empty and emotionless story. Nothing you'll see here is new to Sonic, and it's almost as if the characters themselves want you to know this, constantly calling back to old games, and sometimes even whining about the issues their stories had in the most direct and tone deaf way possible.

Sonic Frontiers overall just feels like a poor attempt for Sega to move forward with the series, by a group of developers who don't understand why it was so beloved in the first place.

Sonic Frontiers is a very good game especially fun, what a surprise, is what matters most in a video game, its open area works well and I would say that it is even strangely addictive to do simple objectives to complete the map and progress in the story the biggest problem I see is that reaching the end it starts to get repetitive, which actually is not such a big problem because when you start to feel this the game is over, even so I hope Sonic Team can improve this in the next Sonic games, despite how good it can be it is not free of other faults, it has its details that if they had been polished simply would give a greater value to the game, I mean some animations and the constant pop in, it is not the worst I've seen in a current video game but we all agree that it would be better if it was not there or if it was less noticeable, I also have to mention Cyberspace, I like the idea of short and replayable levels but its controls and physics are really bad, if the team plans to continue with this idea in the next games I would also like it to improve.
I also have another complaint which is that in the first 3 islands the story of the game gets more and more interesting but once you finish Chaos Island is like the game says "sorry but it has to end" and it feels very abrupt and in general the whole final stretch feels rushed or uninspired especially the final boss, maybe this is due to lack of time in the development and I understand it but still it is a flaw that has and must be marked.
things that I liked but that I almost forgot to mention so here it goes quickly
    *great soundtrack
*I completely love the battles against the titans, I would have liked an option to repeat the fights
*the combat is great, it's simple but it's very well thought out, it's also another aspect that I hope will improve in future games
and here ends my review, a very good game, it is really the way forward for Sonic Team they have a solid foundation and can continue to improve
By the way sorry if something is not understood or for any spelling or grammatical errors that I may have I used 100% of my brain power to write this and a little help from the translator

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do want to talk about the game, but before I do- let me tell you my personal mental state prior. Before this game, I was cold and depressed. Wallowing away in regret as my entire life slipped away from me. Everything I have ever known felt cold and distinct. But then, when I finally got to play Sonic Frontiers… inspiration came to me. My life finally started making sense.

The starfall islands the game houses are vast and wide. They have a myriad of challenges you can complete, and puzzles that are truly puzzling. On top of that, is the usual Sonic gameplay of running, jumping, and boosting your way up rails, ramps, and springs.

But to be honest, the best part about Frontiers is how it excels at bringing to light our deep societal problems. It’s good to know that even an E-rated game such as this can tackle the complex themes of our time so well.

In this game, the great ancients were wiped out by a primal evil: The End, a dark moon set out for destruction. Throughout the entire game, The End tricks Sonic into helping them- saying that they are doing this for the good of Sonic and his friends. But turns out, that was all a lie. In truth, this moon was out to completely annihilate the universe! It tells Sonic that they are inevitable. It will arrive, no matter what Sonic does. And yet, the great Super Sonic, teaming up with the noble Sage, a manmade wonder- stop The End from destroying the world.

This is very clearly an allegory towards the challenging topic of social hierarchy, and its role in today’s world. The pure ancients were unrecognized for years, but they tried to stop The (vile) End from happening. Now, we must know to stop any dark forces that challenge our path- no matter how pure they may present themselves at first. Know, that some are destined to be “The End”. To destroy us all. And just like Super Sonic at the end of Frontiers- we will conquer our enemies.

Sure there may be some kinks to iron out like the pop in and such but that's just a minor tid bit that is sure can be fixed. The best part about this game are the titan boss fights. I kid you not I was flabbergasted that Kellin of Sleeping with Sirens was brought into do the vocals for three of the Titan boss fights. It was a surreal experience I could not describe. The story itself is beyond what I have expected from a sonic game and definitely a step up compared to the stories we've been getting for over the last 10 years or so. No offense anyone who like Sonic Colors's style of writing but I think hearing sonic say badly mcnose hair just doesn't do it for me. If there was a few things I would like to say is maybe fix the leveling up system of the Elder Koco since he only raises your speed increase level and ring count by one point. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was truly an enjoyable experience. An open-zone Sonic game? Count me in! The way Sonic controls in the open zone has been the best he has felt since Unleashed or the Adventure titles. The combat in this game is very unique and a fun experience, the guardians are very fun to fight, Cyberspace is quite a different experience but once you get used to it, you begin to really into the levels. The boss fights in this game are top notch as well. Giganto, Wyvern, and Knight are all good examples. You fly around as Super Sonic trying to deal damage to these colossus-sized enemies. Although I do think the final boss could’ve been better. I don’t really like the idea of a bullet hell. This game’s soundtrack is probably the best within the series. I’m Here, Undefeatable, and Find your Flame are all good examples. Overall, this game is a very fun experience and I suggest just giving it a shot. Expand

Been a Sonic fan for decades, I'm usually the one defending the series from hoards of bad faith critique. I genuinely love most Sonic games and even the few I don't, most of the time I see some redeeming qualities. This though? I feel like I didn't even play the same game as everyone else. This is just them tripling down on everything people hated about stuff like Forces.

It's just shallow level design and reused assets AGAIN. We really waited 5 years for them to put together like 15 green hill zone levels and a bunch of floating grind rails over a default unreal engine terrain. Being able to move in 360 degrees smoothly is cool but I'm not about to give this game points for taking one step towards being as fun to control as Sonic was almost 25 years ago. The movement is still extremely restrictive and does all it can to make player expression as downplayed as possible. And the levels are as basic as physically possible, to the point it doesn't even matter that the controls are decent. Walking down an empty hallway for 3 seconds is gonna be lame no matter how good or bad a game controls. Not to mention in the cyber space levels they gut your controls to be worse for some reason? Literally ripping level design from Generations made for you to drift around, and yet they removed the drift. Except for one level all about drifting ripped from Unleashed, where you have the slowest, most awkward drifting the series has ever seen made just for this stage.

The level design in the "open zone" areas is comically bad. If they were isolated and presented in quite literally any other game they'd be laughed at as some of the most pitiful levels in platforming history. It's all just extremely binary worthless interactions. Homing attack when available, automatic grind rails, automatic wall running, dash pads EVERYWHERE pushing you through entire sections automatically. This game is so afraid of how bad people are at Sonic games they don't want to risk you failing a 5 second long platforming section by designing ANYTHING interesting. It's just 10-15 hours of constantly going through bite sized levels like this that all play the same.

The combat is just button mashing with EXTREMELY light RPG mechanics. Animate a couple flashy special moves where sonic moves all over the place and people are tricked into thinking it's exciting. In reality fights are very scripted. The core gameplay mechanics can literally change on a per-enemy basis. Winning a fight means you followed the script, deviating from said script just pops up janky interactions at best. And that's for the actually "engaging" fights, a lot of them are very mindless. And for the RPG stuff, it's mostly tied to...fishing. The most bare bones fishing minigame the industry has ever seen, that has more in common with a gachapon machine than actual fishing. But yeah you just fish for like 10-20 minutes and your strength and defense levels will be higher than if you 100% the rest of the game otherwise. Tied together with a parry mechanic that asks you to hold the button and wait to be attacked, as there's no timing required.

Which leads into the challenges. Stand here and parry something, you have 40 seconds to do this. Then a different one, parry that same thing but 3 times with a full minute to do so. Parry has no depth to it, you hold down the button and wait. This takes 5 seconds to do at most. This is how deep the game as a whole is, it's just worthless interactions. These insulting challenges were bad enough let alone seeing them copy pasted later in the game. The other challenges really aren't much better. At best we have one that resembles a minigame in club penguin that sonic boom also used. Theres some that have you go to a location. Sonic can run across the whole map in about a minute but hey, see if you can run 20 feet away in 90 seconds with no hazards in the way.

The super sonic fights are lame. Just like the combat they try to make it seem exciting by throwing a visual mess on screen. But unlike past games where Super Sonic had unique mechanics, you're just doing the same attacks you were doing on grunt enemies. Meaning, the first boss is just holding parry until it attacks, then button mashing. The second is more of an auto scroller where you wait for it to get close enough then button mashing. I thought the third was alright as it had a moment where you have to actually aim an attack for once. The final boss had me speechless in a *I don't know if I can follow this series anymore* kind of way.

The story is boring. I was hyped for Ian Flynn to write it but it seems like he was given nothing to work with. I appreciate that they're trying to tidy up the mess the previous writers left but otherwise it's so melodramatic and unfun. Sonic and Amy especially have very pretentiously modern sounding voice direction. Most cutscenes play out like stiff elder scrolls conversations in presentation.

This game is at best, a unity asset flip.

Sonic Frontiers is one of if not the best Sonic game of all time. To say it is the best however is not to imply it is perfect. There are definitely some wrinkles to iron out, bugs to squash, etc, but if the next game can keep what works and fix what doesn't, you have a setup for an amazing game.

There is a lot of random pop-ups, the map is bland, the story is not entertaining, the puzzles are just the worst. The one thing I like it was running around with Sonic and (maybe) some ost music. I would give my experience a 2/10

The visuals are boring to look at. The colors are so desaturated, uninteresting to the eye, devoid of any artstyle that evokes "Sonic". The enemies are uninteresting geometric designs lacking any character, that look like they were pulled out from another kind of game.

Sonic's model pops out so badly in all of this because of its own saturated colors and lighting. The enemies are uninteresting geometric designs lacking any character, that look like they were pulled out from another kind of game.
Sonic Team learned nothing from Sonic '06's bland enemy designs.

A lot of the cutscenes feel like they were done in Source Film Maker lacking any proper framing, lighting, dynamic angles or emotion from the characters.
In-game when characters interact with each other, they barely move their limbs to express any kind of emotion or reaction. There's a handful cutscenes where this is not as much of an issue which shows cutscene animation was an afterthought for the most part.

The "open world" nature works for Sonic's high speed but the concept is not utilized well. Entire sections are blocked off with invisible walls, you cannot abuse momentum to go through sections in different ways as there really is not much of it and the level design is very uninteresting. Random floating rails, springs and platforms is something that gets repeated over and over in all of the island areas. Not only they look jarring but also serve as padding, as if you fail and fall down, you'll have to do it all over again. Complete with objects sometimes glitching and randomly popping in the view potentially obstructing your flow.

The game wants to feel that their combat system is clever but most of the time you can just get away with mashing random buttons and if that doesn't work, just draw a circle around an object with the Cyloop ability and see if that helps. Rinse and repeat.

The physics feel buggy, Sonic reacts to the smallest bump on the terrain and glitches around which makes it look so jarring. It feels even worse when he has to scale on moving objects such as the giant bosses. The physics for some reason feel a lot worse in the Cyberspace levels.

The puzzles feel like a very last minute addition and they break the game's pace. Easily the worst padding and section of the game. Sonic Team learned nothing about breaking the pace with Big's fishing back in Sonic Adventure. Speaking of fishing, the fishing minigame is very shallow, just requiring you to wait and press a button to win. It lacks any depth that other fishing minigames have, such as reel fighting with the fish and watching your line tension.

Sonic is the only person playable in this game. Again. For the longest time, Sonic Team refuses to let us play with any of the other characters. If anything they could have had Knuckles accompany Sonic and handle all of the combat and climbing. Better yet, this should have been a Knuckles game, the entirety of the story feels more personal to Knuckles if anything.

Story was okay for what it was trying to do, but some moments felt forced and some other moments had buildup but did not go anywhere in the end.

The music feels very melancholic and generic all the time, the Cyberspace tracks are the best and these levels do not last long but are the best tracks that remind you of Sonic's peppy character.
The sound effects sometimes feel that they don't fit with the context, like the Sonic Adventure woosh sfx used for an enemy's short dash move.

The voice acting feels very forced and weird, the characters' voices sound like nothing we ever heard from this series. Sometimes they sound too serious to the point I can hear their normal talking voice surface.

Sonic Team needs to allocate time to actually create a GAME and not an engine + a tech demo packaging it as a complete $60 game. They wasted time creating an engine with Forces and they did it again with Frontiers and barely had any time left to flesh out meaningful game mechanics to go with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers is Sonic's first great 3D action game in over a decade. Sonic controls responsively through out 4 and 1/2 large open hub areas called the "Starfall Islands." Along with one of the best soundtracks in the series, best characterization of Sonic and his friends since the Dark Era, and a heart wrenching story makes this an unforgettable experience your first time through. The combat is fun and addictive as stringing together different moves feels both flashy and fun, and the Super Sonic fights are some of the most HYPE sequences in the entire franchise.

However this game suffers greatly in other areas. It suffers from a lack of an interesting art style, an over abundance of forced linearity in the open zones, poor cut-scene quality, poor animation quality that will have sonic snapping between key poses with absolutely no transitions whatsoever, along with lacking in a core game play loop that stays fun across it's 15-30 hour campaign. The mini cyberspace stages control like crap as Sonic is magnetized to the ground and home attack chains take so long to complete it's better to avoid enemies if you wish to achieve S ranks.

/// This segment contains spoilers for the ending of Sonic Frontiers ///

The game's ending also leaves much to be desired, by playing the game on normal difficulty or below, Sonic fights the final titan as the game fades to black and the credits roll with no genuine ending. By playing the game on hard however, Sonic will fly up into space with Sage and fight the AI voice that has been guiding you through the game, threatening to destroy all of creation as it takes the form of the Moon. It's then where the game pulls a complete 180, Instead of a big climactic Super Sonic fight alongside Sage as you fight together and take down this ultimate evil. You instead play an omage to touhou; thrown in with little rhyme or reason. Followed by an extremely easy quick time event as sage then sacrifices herself to destroy the Moon. It then abruptly ends as Sonic and Co. get on a plane and fly off into the sunset, Sonic not reflecting on Sage's sacrifice or the journey he just experienced. Leaving a really bad taste in your mouth as the game raises more questions then answered.

Sonic Frontiers is a rushed, janky, but enjoyable step in the right direction. A foundation to build an even greater experience upon. 7/10

I genuinely love sonic games but this one could have used some more polish before release. All of the animations are stiff and strange looking, the way Sonic’s momentum stops whenever you jump or just stop moving is so janky. When the game is letting you go fast in some of the cyberspace levels it’s SOMEWHAT fun which is why I’m not rating this game below a 5. But if I want to play a game with that cyberspace gameplay, I’ll just boot up Sonic Generations or Colors.

The presentation is seriously lacking, I don’t care for graphical fidelity, but the art direction here looks like something that could be made using mostly stock assets in stock unreal engine. You will be constantly running into walls that just pop out of nowhere. These issues kind of go away in the cyberspace levels where things are actually cool looking.

The music was good, I’m still listening to the 1-2 cyberspace music. Story and voice acting was passable. I’m so tired of reviews for games this year featuring the phrase, “this is a step in the right direction…” Yes! It is! But why can’t we just get to where we’re going already? Gamers need to higher their standards for AAA games, otherwise AAA developers will lose the craftsmanship that have given us the great games of the past. I love Sonic, and this guy deserves a 10/10 game, not a “step in the right direction.”

The problem lies in that it is not as smooth or visually stunning, two things that really make the open zone stick the landing. This game strives in it’s open environments when you can flow between set pieces in creative and fast paced ways. This is not always an option however which leads me to other issues. Poor animations, a lack memorable and functioning set pieces, odd and lazy decisions for cyberspace stages, and overall polishing problems are just some issues that plague this game, but I can’t help but admire the ambition and how overall fun it is as a whole package. These are building blocks for Sega to start making complete games for the blue blur, instead of half baked forced out messes or glorified tech demos. You care about the story, you care about the gameplay, you care about the characters and that’s why it’s a good game. It’s not perfect, but the start to something great. Although, I do have some criticisms like the last two islands being a rip off of Kronos, the Cyberspace levels being too short and reusing previous level asset. That and only using four level themes. Plus, the last two bosses felt a little lackluster compared to the first three. Also, the animation for the in game cut scenes are pretty stiff. Lastly, the part of the story where Sonic was cured of his cyber corruption felt like it was resolved too quickly. Despite all the criticism I have with the game, everything else was great! It really lays a good foundation for a possible sequel or something completely different in terms of Sonic games. I hope you keep the formula around for a long time, Sonic Team! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played Sonic games since the late 90's. I fairly love 2D and 3D versions of the games. But, I'd be lying if I were to say that I've enjoyed any of the recent titles. I think i'd say I felt out of love with them around Sonic 06 (yes we all know that title). But I actually adored the SA and SA2 era. The ones after 06 just never caught my eye, Unleashed was okay, I did try colors...but ended up disliking it. Generations were okay but I wasn't the biggest fan. Forces...yeah.

Okay now you see where my mind was while seeing the first trailers for this game, you can imagine how hopeful and scared I was for this game. When I first played and saw the open world, it did feel off. But I think it's due to not seeing an open world with random springs and railings. But strangely it played right? It's so tough to explain that, It felt like I was playing the Adventure era all over again. The combos I think are a bigger surprise. I thought Sonic actually fighting would only make sense or feel right in something like Smash Bros. But to my surprise, it felt very good to pull off. The quests/puzzles/etc are very short sweet and too the point, which makes sense for a Sonic game.

    Cons:
Like many open worlds/open area, there's bugs. But Sonic Frontiers has a few unique ones. The game contains 2D and 3D sections. Both in the "Cybershell" (stages) and the open areas. While I haven't seen too many issues with Cybershell's 2D, sometimes the open area has a tough time choosing between 2D and 3D in some sections. I think in part it may have something to do with Sonic's speed (which can actually be adjusted) but I really wanted to point it out since It actually can get stuck. There are definitely a few bugs/glitches/jank in the game, but I hadn't seen anything crazy or game-breaking. I played this on PC so I can't speak for every iteration. Lastly, while I enjoyed the story, I wished it actually had more cutscenes (for the story course), to tie in the story, but that's more so a nitpick.

    Overall:

While this game isn't exactly the game of the year for me, It definitely gave a fun impression that I haven't felt in years while playing a Sonic game. It felt fresh, similar to how the Adventure era but with a little bit of everything in one game. It does have its bugs and quirks, but as a game that just games, It's solid in my book. Not to mention, it definitely set the bar for whatever the Sonic Team has next.

It's not buggy, it can be a little rough and slightly unpolished but for the most part, my problems with this game are not stability of the product at all. Cyberspace is probably the absolute worst and slowest Sonic has controlled in 3D, I would rather fight 06 bugs and glitches then play Cyberspace levels. At least 06 can genuinely be fun sometimes, Cyberspace is just slow as **** and braindead, it functions completely fine and never ever bugs out but its just ****ing boring man, slow and boring. THANKFULLY, that's only like 10% of the actual game and the rest of it is, pretty fun? The best thing about Frontiers for me is just how well Sonic himself controls in the "open zone". He's fast, and when not weirdly being magnetized to the floor, he can jump pretty far. The titan fights are the highlight of the game easily, and I really appreciate most of the non ham-fisted nods and references to past Sonic events, be it niche or iconic. I also respect their effort to fix Tail's inconsistent characterization and Knuckles too. I don't have problems with Ian Flynn or his depictions of the characters, I think he did a good job. The final two islands are pretty disappointing after a good first three though, and the ending is pretty meh. When it comes down to it, the best parts of the games are easily the titan fights and music. I think it's thoroughly deserving of a 7/10, but like most Sonic products, not many people actually play these things. People formulate and take opinions from the internet, because it's Sonic. He has to be bad right, never good? Never even decent? This is a step in the right direction, would like to see more.

Decent entry in the Sonic series. Could be better hence not a 10 but I enjoy it, and that’s all that matters to me

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sonic Frontiers, although just a bit janky, reintroduces an adventure-like formula based on exploration, which is used in the open-zone islands. I personally enjoyed the plenty of playground-like obstacles that you traverse through in order to get memory tokens for the characters and how they can even be also used as a method of fast-travel, not to mention the ancient rails themselves. I also familiarized fairly quickly with the controls, including combat-based ones.

One thing that particularly stood out to is the writing, the characters are better than ever, no more background filler or cheesy one-liners or tropes. Amy is back to being a strong believer in love and caring for others, Knuckles is back to his island where he was supposed to be from the very beginning, and Tails improvement specially stood out to me the most, as he was always depicted as a nerdy coward since Sonic Unleashed. Sage, of course, is the embodiment of Ian Flynn's influence in the game's script, a character that left an emotional impact among fans since Chip in, again, Sonic Unleashed, while also showing to the world a more human side of Eggman. The only criticism i have about her character arc is the small amount of screentime Ian Flynn had to work with, i believe that a little more cutscenes had to be made in order to further show the father-daughter dynamic between Sage and Eggman, but still, i believe that enough information was delivered to form an idea of it, causing the final scene of the game to have such an impact among us sonic fans the way it did. Lastly, during the course of the game, there are mentions of previous characters that were once thought to be lately forgotten by Sega, like Cream the Rabbit and Blaze the Cat, and also the mentions of characters which canonicity was questioned, like Sticks the Badger and Tangle the Lemur. I personally like these mentions as they help feel more connection within the different aspects of Sonic's universe.

Now getting into the topic of bossess, my only criticism was the final boss against ''The End'', it was definitely an odd choice to execute the fight in an Ikaruga style gameplay, and this reflects the rushed development that Sega had at the very end of the game's development. On the other hand, the rest of the bossess before it are excellent.

The level design of the Cyberspace Stages, are personally acceptable to me within the context of the general gameplay and the story, they are arcade-like levels that are meant to possess similarities to previous sonic stages as these are sonic's memories stored in the Cyberspace. I believe the Forces-like short level formula works decently well in this game.

Overall, the game has minor flaws, but it is definitely not a ''death of a thousand cuts'', as these flaws are immediately overshadowed by the game's positive attributes. Sonic Frontiers definitely deserves to be praised just as Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic 3&K, Sonic Heroes, etc. Do.

Definitely a step on the right direction, but it does have its noticible flaws. Loved the open zone concept and exploration was a lot of genuine fun. It does feel pretty janky and glitchy at times though, which constantly broke the pace of the game during exploration. Cyberspace left a lot to be desired too. The 3D levels were so linear they would make Forces jealous and the 2D ones felt painfully slow.
Overall, it's an actually pretty solid game that needed some more time in the oven. It's not perfect, but it's not bad either, totally worth checking out. I can totally see this new gameplay style work out. Hands down the best Sonic game since Mania and the best 3D Sonic game since Generations, hats off to Sega.
(Also, I wish those who are not reviewing this game with either a 0 or a 10 a very pleasant evening)

The best game in the franchise. The story is great and the characters well written, finally. The gameplay and core mechanics are really fun. Sonic Frontiers is definitely an amazing game and lays the ground work for the future and I can't wait for the next one.

sonic never felt better to control and the setup for future gameplot as well as tying other games to an specific part of the story is remarkable, finally some good character development, also running around open zones with controll of the chamera, also also those EPIC Boss-fights.

soundtrack i would say without a doubt that its in consideration of best of the year 2022 could use more

Loved the game, so much fun, few things could be added on such as better physics (which has been done using mods on PC, they completely change how the game feels making it that much more fun)). Sega made the game they needed to make to revive the 3D series.

The story is the best out of the whole franchise, and the voice acting is very good, Roger Craig Smith did an amazing job as the voice of Sonic! The music in this game is incredible and it's the best music in the entire series! The Super Sonic fights against the Titans were amazing and some of the best fights in a video game! Thank you Takashi Izuka and ESPECIALLY Morio Kishimoto who created this MASTERPEICE!
The 5 years wait was definitely worth it.

    Bad.
Animations that don't load properly, 'open gameplay' that tells you that you can't do that yet, objects not loading in until you smack into them at mach 50. Seagulls that fly faster than you. Bad voice acting, bad gameplay, terrible world design. Overall the game is jank.

Sonic fans love to talk about a "Step forward" So much so, they never even consider where they're currently standing. For the past decade, Sonic has been nothing but terrible release after terrible release. This game is no exception. Instead of giving it the dismantling it bloody well deserves, they look forward "positively" about the next installment. It's an admirable sentiment, But they neglect something: we're not at the next installment, now are we? We don't know when, where or what the next installment will be. We don't know it's quality. We don't know if it will be rushed, and we don't know if Sega files bankruptcy between now and then as the economy crumbles.
And what happens if you point all of this out or fairly critique the game? They will smash down harder than a Bio-Lizard with a space colony up its rear. And they will flood you with endless bad faith justifications for their - let's be frank - brand addiction. Didn't play the game because you can tell by looking that it's not what you want? "You're being toxic. You didn't play it so you cant say anything negative" Played a little and hated it? "You're being toxic. You need to spend [arbitrary number] hours playing to give it a fair shake." You 100% completed it? "You're being toxic. You like the game if you completed it so why are you complaining?" The fandom has ushered in this dubious state of affairs and they cheer it on with uproarious applause... Every bad remaster of a decade+ old game? Blame the fans, because they create a culture where awfulness is acceptable.

There's a fascinating irony about all of this - Sonic in his early days was about moving forward, and freedom but ever since 06, the series has stagnated. There is this insultingly cynical recycling of Nostalgic locals. that have ruined those stages for me in their original games in retrospect. Control and freedom has been surgically stolen from the player with each installment until you got the brain-dead mechanics of Forces, and after a 5 year hiatus from games with next to no information, Frontiers drunkenly staggers onto market immediately making it apparent why Sonic's control has been removed from you:
Sega, and Sonic Team have no idea what they're doing and you can tell. I do not care how "Mean" this sounds to the hard working devs," a functional company would have dressed every single individual responsible for these missteps down and fired them. and replaced them with a bevy of the many talented modders and fangame creators that exist in their fandom. Sega's most prominent IP cannot seem to get a good reputation in gaming - this is how studios get shut down. I'm not being overdramatic, this kind of stuff destroys consumer trust, and the fans who cheer it on are kicking a quality can down the road when they themselves have the power to stop it by voting with their wallet.

Sonic suffers from Poor leadership and incompetency. Why are there so many control sliders? It's not "accessibility," It's a crutch. It's because they themselves don't know how to program a Sonic that feels intuitive to play and outsourced that responsibility to the player with the cynical abandon of a self checkout.
Even with the sliders, Sonic looks and feels like ass to play. He sticks to the ground, loses all momentum when jumping, feels unnaturally scripted, cannot intuitively run on terrain Sonic (the character) absolutely should be able to run on (unless the game tells you to), goes flying facing sideways off small pebbles and the combat feels incongruous with his movement setup. There are zero excuses for this: Even shooters have begun to grasp physics, movement, and character consistency. And this doesn't even address the rampant rendering issues.

I give the game credit for it's music. Doesn't brick a system and that's about it - below the bare minimum. If the community were more honest, this game would hover around a 5 or a 6 rating. It's ok to like the concept or idea for the future, but guys, this is a sixty dollar game. I didn't buy into a glorified alpha or a promise of what's to come "later". I brought this game. I want to have fun with this game now. I don't care about "potential" because none of that currently exists.

...It feels like the Sonic community stopped caring about the quality of a release and are just happy to get one, which I empathize with. Still, I will never appreciate positive review bombing a game at the expense of the consumer. When the afterglow wears of, Sonic fans will acknowledge it's bad everyone will mock it for decades, and the cycle will repeat - as it did for forces, as it did for Lost World, and as it did for Generations. Sonic is a dying gaming icon. He'll exist in other forms, sure, but as a game? My predictions aren't green hills for the blue blur.

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
