Inconsistent momentum and stilted movement also negatively impact the flow of gameplay, along with inconsistent frame pacing on console at 30 fps. Despite these issues, this is easily the best 3d platformer I've played in years. Running around in the open zone collecting various doo-dads, speeding through cyber space, and defeating gigantic foes to a banger metalcore soundtrack is everything I ever wanted out of a new 3d sonic. The writing and story was amazing by the way, please keep Ian Flynn! This formula works very well, and given some adjustments to physics and progression, I could definitely see a new Sonic Adventure style similar to Frontiers. So I just got the game and even though i only played for 2 hours on the first island, i already love it.
I never was much of a Sonic fan and this is my first Sonic game and gotta say, it's absolutely awesome!
Definitely gonna 100% this banger, well worth the 70 dollars I spent.
highly recommended for both Sonic fans and even non-Sonic fans like myself.

The boss fights are visual marvels backed by intense amazingly preformed metal and scremo real s. The story itself is the best from a sonic game and without spoiling it the final boss feels rewarding and satisfying to beat. Again this is an amazing sonic game one of if not the best, but most suprising of all it is a generally good game a feat not many sonic games accomplish. I loved my entire 30 hour playthrough of this game, I've collected all trophies yet I still find myself coming back. All i hope now is Sega can give the devs the time they need since this game proved it works when you give the devs what they need. To finish this off I'd like to say that personally frontiers is my favorite game of 2022, even after hundreds of hours in elden ring and even more time spent killing zombies in dying light 2 sonic still somehow managed to speed his way into my favorite title from this year. The best Sonic game in more than a decade. The game takes itself seriously, the open zones are well designed, and the gameplay is really fun. What ties the game together for me is Sonic's control, it's the best he's felt since the adventure era. It may be a little rough in some aspects, but this is still a great step forward for the franchise.

In all honesty, at this point i would feel embarrassed to call myself dunkey fan. He thinks Assassin's Creed and GTA are boring, hates FF7Remake, praises Last of Us 2 (awful game) and now shts on Sonic as well? I mean what next? Max Payne 3 is worst shooter? Anyway he's like one of the last people, who's opinion would mean ANYTHING to me.

The only things keeping this game from being a 10/10 for me is the lack of more diverse level environments, the pop-in, and a little bit of jank. Here’s my review, after PLAYING the game:
The characters have finally been fleshed out, the story makes an attempt at depth that has not been seen since Sonic Adventure 2 and the soundtrack (as is trademark of any Sonic series game) is fantastic.
Are there hiccups in the game shifting Sonic from 3D to 2D platforming? Yes. Does the environment “pop in” when you are going lightning speeds

Are there hiccups in the game shifting Sonic from 3D to 2D platforming? Yes.
Does the environment “pop in” when you are going lightning speeds across locations? Sometimes.

But in either case, I have been able to use the multitude of abilities I have to reclaim my balance/safety on the map. You tripped? Boost or double jump out of it to rebalance.
You missed a railing? Double jump back and stop spamming boost everywhere. The game becomes natural to control once you give it the chance. We are talking about the worlds fastest hedgehog, and even then the game provides option to those who prefer not to go so fast. It’s a great game direction for Sonic, my only real advice is that the game be a tad less corny and even then that’s just another Sonic trademark.

Please pursue this direction for Sonic, Sega, as it will continue to revive this series so many of us cherish and love. And I hope the constructive criticism will set itself apart from review bombing.

The character interaction is the best we've ever seen in the series and each of the characters relations with each other are greatly displayed. However the game does has it flaws but the pros so massively outweigh its cons that I can't help but overlook some of them because the game is still so fun to play.

Memory Tokens, Purple Coins, Keys, Gears and Emeralds, all are scattered throughout the world and leave a non-linear progression in the game to allow the player to carve their own path towards advancing the story. My only gripe would be is for future games to have more "sonic-y" styled aesthestics for open world akin to Adventure, and allow for more natural ways in the envrionment to show off Sonic's abilities rather than random rails and black climable walls, but for the sake of this games context it makes sense. Sonic's movement is extremely fluid and fun to play around with and using his speed to get to higher areas in different ways is extremely enjoyable, adding to the non-linearity. Cyberspace stages are mixed, while some are fun, others are very clearly reusing design choices that does eventually wear on the repetition of the stages. I would like for more original level designs overall and better controls as Sonic can feel stiff in these levels, both of which i'd like to see take more inspiration from Generations way of handling boost stages. Combat was surpisingly extremely fun, while it is simple I greatly appreciated it and had so much fun getting better at learning the combat system and using Sonic's new arsenal of moves. Bosses and Mini Bosses are the BEST the series has seen in over 20 years, each one is extremely unique with their own gimmicks and patterns to keep you on your toes. I was so satisfied playing all these battles and getting better at them as it only added to my joy of the combat system. The story was excellent and the greatest we have seen since Sonic Adventure 2. The amount of new discoveries and new revelations we had to pre-existing lore combined with new story elements was so intruging and I loved every second of it. By the end I cried at how beautiful it was. I hope Ian Flynn and his Team can return for future mainline games as they were excellent. The OST was as great as always from Sonic games and I commend Ohtani and the sound teams work. Overall, Morio Kishimoto and the rest of Sonic Team have produced a great and satisfying experience that deserves the praise it gets after all their hard work. This was a great step forward for the franchise and I hope future installments build upon it's formula while making it bigger and better. A great start to the new era of Sonic, I only hope to see more! Expand

The final boss was ok but could've been better. The true final boss, only accessible by playing the game on hard mode, would've been amazing if the fight itself was...better. The music is fantastic and the character interactions is one of the best things about this game.

There is pop-in, automated segments where the game literally rips the control from the player's hands, and the combat is shallow. Idk why but I never noticed the pop-in probably more than five times but I felt like it would've been disingenuous to not mention it. The combat is style with little substance but I've never been one to hate that type of combat in games so it was still very enjoyable.

To a casual gamer or person, this game would probably land around the 7-8 mark as it currently is rated by the overall Users' Rating Score and Metascore but I simply had enough fun with this game that I'd be dishonest to not rate it a 9.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A phenomenal Sonic game. (No spoilers) So much to explore, so many enemies to fight, so many collectibles, so much to do! This game finally feels like Sonic as a game franchise evolving. The islands are fun to explore and each have some uniqueness to them in terms of how they were designed. The combat is fast-paced enough and feels enjoyable to use with the combos and Phantom Rush, so I never got tired of it. Sonic himself starts out quite slow, but as you level his speed up, you'll notice just how fast he can traverse around the islands. That was honestly a majority of the fun I had; just blasting around the islands as fast as I could go exploring for memory tokens. Sonic controls amazing as well, although you can customize certain aspects of his movements in the settings.

The story is the best we've gotten in a Sonic game since Unleashed, by far. Lots of world building, lore explaining, and character building moments that are fun to watch. The humor is MASSIVELY improved as well (not that that's difficult). The collectibles were fun to gather for the most part, I just wish the seeds were more abundant.

The boss fights were the game's highlight for me. Each Titan is so unique and fun to fight, they felt like what would be final bosses of previous Sonic games. The soundtracks that play during those fights is also exhilarating.

My main issues with the game and the reason I gave an 8, not a 10, are as follows:
    1. The pop-in for platforms and grind rails is very noticeable. It's especially bad later in the game, the faster you go.
    2. The Fishing minigame is too overpowered (super op once you reach the final island), because sometimes you can level up skills faster by fishing than you can exploring the Islands and defeating foes, which feels very wrong. This is caused by how cheap the items in the fishing shop are. Fishing mostly fine in the first Islands, but for the final island, you are allowed to buy EVERYTHING you need to reach max levels. Fishing should not benefit you more than exploring.
    3. The skill tree. It is VERY easy to max the skill tree, as I had spent all my skill points possible by the end of Ares Island. One you do unlock all your skills, your skill points become nothing other than an ever-increasing number. The skill tree itself is oddly small, with the skills themselves being a little to cheap to purchase.
    4. SPOILERS [My biggest complaint by FAR. The true final boss. By playing in hard mode, and defeating all titans, you then face the game's true final boss. "The End". Wow. It's awful. Instead of facing a final foe that puts ALL of your learned skills and abilities you learned throughout the game to the test, you instead face a space boulder and play a bare-bones top down space-shooter. The same one you only played 3 times prior throughout the entire game. It can be difficult getting the hang of it too, with all the projectiles and the switching light to dark mechanic. So, of course, not a single checkpoint throughout the entire fight. It's not fun. The best part of the true final boss, is when the space shooter stops, and you must do a few QTE's as Super Sonic.]

Overall, the ending might not be the best, and certain aspects are balanced very well, as a whole Sonic Frontiers is a great Sonic game with lots of enjoyment to be had. I look forward to more Sonic games with open-zone, and I do hope Frontiers get DLC. With a final time of 27 hours, Sonic Frontiers is my second favorite 3D Sonic game.

There’s a different feel because there isn’t a hub world to this game or anything that makes it specifically memorable such as tails workshop, but part of that is because throughout the entire game you are experiencing new mechanics, new enemies, and new bosses back-to-back. Mini games for me, I love. Sonic should be a playground, and that’s kind of what this entire game feels like.

The whole early thousands casino look at things is what sonic is to me, and they have a lot of throwbacks to previous games. It took me a couple hours to get used to the new control scheme and physics but once I figured it out I’ve found that I can move myself freely however i want, generally by using a drop dash to stop momentum or side step to reposition myself, getting used to using the boost for positioning opposed to skipping everything.

I love how this game feels, i love the minigames, fishing is a nice addition and the constant change of pace in the game is welcome.

However, I do feel like I’m progressing alone still unlike in sonic adventure i felt like i was progressing with the other characters, though that may be intentional.

And it’s hard to grow comfort in the zones because of How large they are and with the art style growing accustomed to learning how to identify specific areas.

Generally, in most games you can recognize where you are because you see something iconic from previous games, but this Game is completely fresh with all new setting and theme completely while also not being a linear course like other platformers or even RPG’s

I want to give it a 10 / 10 because i can’t put it down and I’m going to even replay it on hard.

But I think I’d give it a 9 / 10 because there are hiccups, camera issues and occasional wall clipping. Though in my opinion the soundtrack alone is worth it and the bugs don’t happen that frequently. Throughout my play through I had only encountered one game breaking bug and that was the ghost boss when it attached to a tower, I destroyed the tower too fast so he just stood there and killed me slowly while I watched. Technically one other bug ( hey devs this is not game breaking but It is very misleading and frustrating once you find out ) after defeating the boss in chaos island there is still an island mystery in the zone that will never go away being the lava on the mountain because it’s correlating to when you play pinball.

If it’s lower, it’s because they are hyper critical of the pop in, which will never affect the game play or because they simply don’t like sonic games. While the pop in is bad, it didn’t take away from the fun of blasting at insane speeds across the land. Or trying to best my speeds in cyber space.

I think it’s safe to say, the conflict is because it’s very different from anything we’ve experienced from the franchise before while also using props that are familiar to us, in order to get the game to where it needs to be, i don’t think they need to change much of How the game works, i think they need to slowly accustom the player base to a new familiar world and solidify the story they provided towards the end of this game. Sonic has always been episodic whereas this feels like a new beginning towards the end of the game. Leaving me wanting for more.

This Sonic is the right direction, but growing pains are there and it makes sense why they are there. Not only for the developer but also the player.

I grew up loving Sonic, but I did not grow up with Sonic games. I was first exposed to some random Archie comic I found at a department store, and then I avidly watched Sonic X, played as him nonstop in Brawl, and consumed an unhealthy amount of fan-made sprite animations on Youtube. Later in life I went back and actually played the games, and while it was a bit of a mixed bag, I came backI grew up loving Sonic, but I did not grow up with Sonic games. Later in life I went back and actually played the games, and while it was a bit of a mixed bag, I came back with my love for the franchise unfaltered. This game has quadrupled my love for this stupid blue hedgehog.

It's definitely not perfect (nothing is but you know what I mean) but it is such a huge leap in the right direction that at times it can feel like it is. The disparity between this game and some of Sonic's lower points is incredible. The story is fantastic (thank you Ian Flynn), the combat is fun and satisfying (turn autocombo off) and the exploration makes me fully trust Sonic Team with an Adventure remake. The controls are tight, and can be customized to perfection. I do have some gripes. The Cyberspace levels are genuinely awful to control. It's not that the open-world controls don't translate well, it's just that they control completely differently and Much worse. It's so slow. I found myself skipping Cyberspace whenever possible, which is a shame because I am a fan of the boost games.
While I did love the open world's, I do still wish there was a little more to do in them. Not really the end of the world but some more collectables would've been nice.

This game rocks tho. I sincerely hope the franchise continues in this exact direction. Also the bosses are **** insane and the music bumps please buy this game

Kind of pathetic to watch these Dunkey fans review bomb this game. Why do some people like his content again? Is it because of his extreme gaming knowledge? The voice acting does have the odd delivery here and there but more frequently it is treated with a gentle and careful tone, leaving behind the goofier over-exaggeration for a more nuance and egotism delivery, this from every character. The music is particularly superlative in this entry: while the cyberspace boost/2d levels are energetic and exciting, the overworld music on each island is a delight that never wears out its welcome. The highlight which demands attention is the super sonic boss themes. These are consistently heavy and exciting modern djent/metal tunes and they capture the hype of the series staple final boss battle tracks, minus the usual cheesiness. My only gripes with this game are fairly minor ones- the pop-in is pretty noticeable at high speeds, but it's never an issue as you can still see things well in advance no matter how fast you're going. Also newcomer Sage is an interesting and engaging character and adds a brand new depth to Eggman that we've never seen before, but she isn't given the time to properly develop and events ar the very end of the game are paced so poorly that writer Ian Flynn forgets to give the cast a proper send-off and acknowledge the impact of this new character. The ending feels very rushed and I wish it was given more room to breathe, as while my platinum 100% playtime was a relatively short 25 hours total, I was able to connect with this new character and enjoy(for the most part) the returning cast but feel they did not receive a properly thought out resolution. All told, Sonic Frontiers is the perfect package to reignite the interest of gamers in this languishing gaming franchise. 9/10. Adjusted to 10 to fight bombing post-dunkey retards Expand

My only drawback to the whole experience are the cyberspace levels, which suffer from a lack of variety and don’t control as smoothly as I would have expected given the rest of the game, but that could just be a matter of personal preference. Sonic Team has an amazing future on its hands, let's see how far this takes us

Without a doubt the best Sonic game, the only major problem that I see is the pop-in but not to the point of ruining the gaming experience

a good experience with everything we love about modern sonic and more , a perfect entry point for new players too

the cyberspace levels are wonderful representations of previous levels of other sonics and the originals are not far behind

The open world is fun to explore and despite the simple combat mechanics it always makes fights entertaining.

This is by far the best 3D sonic ever. Controls are very tight, islands are filled with creative platforming, and the combat is flashy with a lot of variety. The story of the game is one of if not the best story in a sonic game to date. The super sonic boss battles are the best boss fights in the series platforming genre. Like any other sonic soundtrack, the soundtrack of frontiers slaps. This is by far the best 3D sonic ever. My only complaint is that cyberspace stages don’t have stage variety with the repeating green hill, chemical plant, and sky sanctuary (city level barley shows up), and the controls aren’t as good as the open world. For any sonic fan or even platforming fan I would recommend this game. Expand

Its been a LONG time since I enjoyed a sonic game like this, it really feels like it was made for the fans and not just the critics and I appreciate it

An incredibly fun game, not what I was expecting it to be in the slightest but I was presently surprised. This is the game that sonic deserved and I’m glad he got! Keep it up sega

The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
