Horizon forbidden west is mediocrity at its finest. Although the combat, World, and graphics are great, the characters lack depth, and the story is unconnected and boring. The game feels like it is not a full package, and while I believe there’s enjoyment in this game, I regretfully remember my 35 hours with the game.

It’s actually waaaay better than the first game. Story is well done along with combats and elements. Enjoyed it so much.
There are some minor issues but they don’t really affect the game play.
I liked how much they had progressed from the first one, I mean they really added much new stuff to make it more realistic and enjoyable.

This is definitely one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. It looks absolutely stunning on my PS5, the combat is smooth and fun as ever, the music helps set the tone throughout the game, the characters have really come to life, and it’s essentially improved in the very few ways it fell short by its predecessor. 10/10 would recommend.

And to all of the people that hate on the game just to hate it, while hundreds of hard working members that worked their tails off to make this game for the last year…….should be shot in the face lol

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Story: It would have been very, very difficult to exceed the stunning sci-fi revelations in the original game, Horizon Zero Dawn. While HFW does throw some wonderful new twists into the mix, it does not quite match up to the awe I felt in HZD when Project Zero Dawn was revealed. I was blinking back tears at the ambition, scientific prowess, and sacrifice required to get it done. That said, while the science fiction doesn't quite measure up to the first game (it is still great!) the characters and growth of interpersonal relationships are quite a bit better. My single biggest complaint about the story was the absolute emotional gut punch that came near the end. Really took the wind out of my sails. Another complaint I have is that the story hinges on Aloy overcoming her "go it alone" pathology and building up team of fellow badasses to take on new threats, but continued to have her be more or less solely responsible for saving the day. This is a perpetual problem of the hero fantasy genre - if the other characters are great and well written, as they are here, they deserve to shine and have meaningful victories independent of the protagonist.

The World: The lore building in HZD was first class, and that continues to be the case in the sequel. Data-points abound with new revelations about the old ones and their myriad interpretations by the various tribes. Side quests are also excellent this time around, with much better voice acting and motion capture giving the sense that the world is richly populated and churning with intrigue. On top of all that, the world looks absolutely stunning. Best looking environments I have ever seen, and they are much more diverse than the first game. From underwater caves hidden in snowy mountaintops to the tidal pools of a ruined San Francisco, the natural world is a main character of this franchise and it shows. The machines also feel more varied and deadly this go around. Come unprepared to a fight and some of them are down right terrifying.

The Mechanics: Combat is much more complex this time around, for better and worse. Weapon diversity is great, but I felt that in order to figure out which weapons were actually the most effective I would have had to endlessly grind at the upgrade treadmill. So I just picked a few favorites and focused on them. As in the first entry, combat feels awesome. Machines are fast and lethal, but so is Aloy. The biggest mechanical complaint I have is with climbing. The focus system feels clunky - like a debug tool that accidentally got left in the game. I realize climbing systems are hard and that the terrain here is much more complex than in Breath of the Wild, but nevertheless climbing feels like a weak point of an otherwise visceral exploration experience. I should also add that several pain points of the first game - for example too much time spent in inventory menus - have been cleverly addressed in HFW.

Overall: Buy it. Will almost certainly be my game of the year.

Some notes on why not a perfect 10... There are some glitches. When I kill a flying creature, sometimes they will stand up in the sky where I cannot loot them. I wish Aloy still had a bit more innocence about her. I feel like she now thinks that she is the bomb. I don't

Some notes on why not a perfect 10... There are some glitches. When I kill a flying creature, sometimes they will stand up in the sky where I cannot loot them. I wish Aloy still had a bit more innocence about her. I feel like she now thinks that she is the bomb. I don't know, I didn't create the character, but what I loved about her in ZD was that she really needs to discover herself just as much as she needs to discover the world that she is a part of. Her discovery was relatable as Aloy and the player could learn about themselves together.

I would also love to see a new game plus option on the horizon. [On proof reading, I just realized the pun here, so forgive the cheesy pun, but I kindof love it, so it is staying... ]

Also, just a matter of personal preference, the combat was a bit over complicated, but I understand some people would love it like that.
The robots are super cool in this one too and some of the other unexpected enemies are sure to delight as well.

Horizon Forbidden West falls short as a follow-up to Guerrilla's initial success, "Horizon Zero Dawn." The game grapples with establishing its unique identity and crafting an open world that, though visually stunning, contradicts and mars the gameplay experience. While the storyline ambitiously expands, it suffers for it, becoming less focused and burdened by an extensive cast that leaves players detached and uninvolved in the overall narrative.

Despite its flaws, the gameplay is the saving grace that held my interest until the end. Combat, in particular, often offers moments of exhilarating engagement. However, a myriad of issues plague this aspect. Likely due to the developers' focus on the open world structure, the uniqueness of Horizon's world—battling colossal mechanical dinosaurs with primitive weapons—gets overshadowed. The level design, immersive and inspired by real-life environments, ironically hampers combat fluidity. It's far too easy to become ensnared in terrain, limiting mobility and frustrating the overall experience. Melee combat, in particular, feels cumbersome and unpolished. This is a missed opportunity, as a symbiotic relationship between melee and ranged combat could have been deeply satisfying.

Further combat-related concerns persist. Engaging the mechanical beasts one-on-one is an uphill struggle; they tend to amass in groups, often near other packs. Alerting one often triggers an alert for the rest, resulting in chaotic, protracted battles devoid of respite or the chance to secure vital loot. Stealth as a combat mechanic feels monotonous and formulaic—hardly innovative given its common presence in open world games. This also extends to combat against human foes, which feels repetitive and uninspiring.

Regrettably, mobility lacks variety and intrigue. Much of the time, you'll find yourself walking or riding mechanical creatures, contributing to a considerable portion of the game feeling mindlessly traversed. Climbing mechanics are clunky and unrefined, a consistent issue throughout the gameplay.

The storyline is a convoluted mess, replete with excessive dialogue and an intricate plot revolving around immortal humans who left Earth. It veers drastically from the already imaginative premise of Zero Dawn, severely affecting narrative coherence and world believability. It seems as though the writers struggled to harness the captivating world previously established. Dialogue comes across as juvenile, characters remain underdeveloped, and gameplay feels disconnected from the plot's essence. This discord undermines the world-building established in Horizon Zero Dawn, introducing flaws that undermine immersion. Scaling back the story's stakes could have mitigated these issues, as not every game requires a world-saving narrative.

The game's redeeming qualities lie in its exceptional graphics, sound design, and music. These elements converge to create an immersive atmosphere, elevating the overall gameplay experience. Notably, the endgame—seeking out formidable machines for enhanced weaponry—echoes the gameplay loop of Monster Hunter, albeit underexplored due to the plethora of competing game elements.

Side quests often lack allure, trapped in a formulaic structure that necessitates halting progress, enduring mundane dialogue, and engaging in repetitive machine battles. This content, while explored, fails to captivate as effectively as similar endeavors by other studios in the open-world genre.

"HFW" underscores the significance of thoughtful planning. The inaugural "Horizon" game embarked on a daring journey into ambitious open-world design, enhanced by captivating storytelling and innovative mechanics. Regrettably, Guerrilla Studios missed the opportunity to build on this strong foundation, expanding the game into a sprawling sandbox. Consequently, the content feels uninspired, and core gameplay mechanics remain unpolished. The enchantment has waned, leaving a facade of style without substance. I earnestly hope that Guerrilla regains their stride in their next endeavor.

The mission structure is very much appreciated and every mission felt complete and varied with different locations to explore and lore to unpack. Combat feels solid and responsive, there is a good variety of weapons to choose from, and resources being more abundant is an improvement from Zero Dawn. The machines are balanced well enough with bosses being a reasonable challenge but not devolving into cheap Soulsborne pandering like many contemporary game devs love to partake in. However, most of the enemies in the open world aren't worth fighting, as they take too much time and effort and provide minimal XP. Which leads me to the worst aspect of this game, the level structure of the missions forces you to grind and do some side quests which really slows down progress. There is a massive level increase of the missions at the end of the game, so grinding and side quests are basically a requirement. The final boss is also incredibly difficult and takes a lot of time to beat if you aren't high level. Overall, Horizon Forbidden West is a great improvement over the original and deserves the 8/10 rating. Expand

the negatives of this game is that they nerfed Aloy and buffed the machines, which made the combat very unbalanced. the new combat system, skill tree, platform jumping and AI spam moves was very disappointing. it is still a good game but I wished more of the first game. Water, fish, trees and the machines are all top notch, not to mention Aloy herself. In fact, during the cut scenes, the human animations are almost perfect. The little details in the working villages, seeing everyone doing stuff, makes it feel like a lived in world.
Voice acting is solid. Music is subtle, but well balanced. The noise of the world itself, again, great.
Combat is such good fun, and you can really play to your style, with tons of options, from laying traps, sniping whilst hiding in grasses, or full on full-frontal assaults. The controls and movements are crisp and really responsive.
The story is engaging, the exploration is fun, and some of the puzzles are decent, if not quite Tomb Raider levels.
All in all, I loved this game, but I would probably take it down to an 8.5 if I could (I couldn't so it gets a nine) for the following reasons.
Aloy's voice sometimes becomes super quiet and I struggle to hear her.
When you arrive at a puzzle, if you don't get it almost immediately, she starts giving out hints that are often just the solution. Jeez, give me a moment to look around!
Aloy does sometimes like to get stuck on a climb, refusing to reach up for the next hand-hold, which can get annoying.
    Just to note, I
Lastly, I like to clear an area first, and then move on, and the story makes that impossible, so there is a lot of doubling back to earlier locations to complete areas. It's fine, but just, for me, a little frustrating.
All in all though, very, very enjoyable, and well worth picking up.

Combat is engaging. There are so many different arenas, enemies and ways to approach combat. You can go for a stealth build, laying down traps and going for sneak attacks. You can go in "guns" blazing. You can try to deal as much raw damage as possible, or try to target specific components to disable abilities and gain upgrades. You can remove weapons from your enemies and use it against them. Even something as simple as a bow and arrow has a ton of variety to it? Do you want a bow that shoots fast, or one that shoots slower, but does more damage or tears off components easier? Do you want to prioritize dealing damage, or would you like to inflict status effects to weaken your opponent before going in for the kill?
This game also greatly expands upon the world established in zero dawn. You get to learn more about stuff established in the previous game, and you get to learn about brand new aspects of the world. You also get to learn about how the factions you're familiar with interact with the factions you're meeting for the first time.
I would give this game a perfect 10, but there are a few small things that keep me from doing this. Some of the returning characters feel like they don't have a lot to do, and the dialogue with them can feel kinda empty, complete with unnecessary theatre-type. movements and gestures. Sometimes enemy AI can be a little weird too. I've had a few instances where I was in combat, and my enemy just kinda left, and I had to chase them down again. Some of the enemies can also feel a little too tanky at times as well.
Overall however, some of the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time and I wish people were talking about this game more.

The game is absolutely must play on ps5. Great story, great characters, music, graphic… absolutely masterclass. I would say only ending is the worst part of the game. I mean without any spoilers I thought it will be more interesting in the last mission… but still whole word created by Guerrilla Games is amazing. 9.5/10 for me !! Can’t wait next part….

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start with the praise:
This game takes all the great elements from the original, and improves almost every weakness. Once again, Guerrilla nailed not only the graphics, but the world building as well. The open world is the most dense I've ever seen, and the towns/settlements are so alive it's honestly impressive. Melee combat got a complete revamp in this game, and I couldn't be happier. I chose to max out my Warrior skill tree first as I was excited to test this system out, and I was not disappointed. Side quests are amazing in this game, I find myself watching almost every optional cutscene becasue of how great the dialogue and facial animations are. Ranged combat is still extremely satifysing, also introducing several new mechanics. The new machines are so detailed and honestly way more aggressive than the first game. Also, traversal has been revamped with things like the grappling hook, paraglider, and climbing, which are all great additions, and even make for some interesting combat combos. I was also a big fan of the skill tree in this game. 6 different playstyles with 20+ skills on each is mindblowing. And as a smaller praise, I love the new game Machine Strike, reminds me of Gwent from the Witcher 3. I was also impressed with the revamped Focus system. Everything is more accessible and easier to navigate in the new game.
    Some weak points:
The story was a downgrade from the first game. However, it was by no means bad. Fans of the first games story will love and appreciate the story, but a new player might find themselves confused and uninterested.
As of writing this there is no New Game +. I think this would only add to the replayablity of the game.
Finally, the bugs. None of my encounters have been gamebreaking, and I understand that with a new game this big it is inevitable for their to be some bugs. However, I felt it was necessary to include any issues I had with the game.

The second entry of the Horizon series does an amazing job of improving on all aspects of its predecessor. Granted, it is not a perfect game, however it is one of the most polished and quality gaming experiences I've had in a very long time.

The gameplay is very smooth and feels satisfying. The game mechanics are fairly simple and you don't have to bother too much with them to enjoy your playthrough, especially on the lower difficulties (normal and below). You can keep things simple, but if you prefer more complexity and a challenge, you can opt for a higher difficulty level, which will require you to delve more into your strengths and weaknesses, and that of your foes.
The game does a great job of explaining all of it's mechanics and I never felt lost. A few hours into the game you might get a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities though, especially if you're new to the series.

The plot is intriguing, more so if you're into sci-fi. However, the plot of Horizon Zero Dawn is fundamental to understand the plot of this game, so anyone interested in the full scope of the story should definitely play that game first. It's nothing groundbreaking, but for a video game series it is one of the more engaging plots I've seen. Good enough even for its own movies, and believe me, Sony will look into this at some point! ;-)

Visually this game is stunning. The frame rate in quality mode is a bit too choppy to my liking, so I've been playing in performance mode, at the cost of 4K resolution and some other visual benefits. However, even in performance mode this game looks beautiful! It's the attention to detail that makes me enjoy games that bit more and every corner of Horizon's world has been crafted with absolute care.

In summary; I love this game and it is money well spent. I can recommend this to basically anyone, whether you're more of a casual gamer or hardcore. Everything about this game screams quality and it more than makes up for some of the minor glitches you might encounter.

-The story seems intriguing so far, tackling the big questions left from the first one, with unexpected answers. Some reviewers on here will tell you it's boring or unoriginal, but honestly, I'm curious what constitutes original for some of these people. It's a post-apocalyptic world with machine creatures and futuristic tech left behind. That right there is already interesting, and it's scratching the surface. My point is, if you liked the plot of the first game, you'll like this one just as much or more.
-Graphics here are just eye-wateringly beautiful if you have the right hardware. I got an LGCX tv last year, as well as a PS5, and this game rivals TLOU2 in terms of graphic detail, but with a much more colorful palate. There may be some glitches or weird things going on sometimes, but I'm not going to dock it points for something a patch can fix in a week. It's not enough to make me not enjoy it. The character models look much more realistic this time too.
-Gameplay is wonderful. So the first game already had so many gadgets and weapons for you to use in whatever combination you saw fit. This beefs it up even further, adding more of each, adding more elements machines can be weak or strong vs, and adding more options for your weapons, not to mention the new abilities Aloy has. Traversal is more fun than ever with more mounts, more ways to climb and descend, and interesting new tools for interacting with the environment. It builds very well on what the first game did.
-I'm enjoying this game very much so far. You can't go 100 steps without running into something. Seriously, I get to a fire checkpoint and I'm near like 4 or 5 question marks all the time. Is it a ruin? Hunting ground? Rebel camp? Blocked path I just got a tool to unblock and loot? Even if it's a herd of machines, there's always things to upgrade that need parts from those machines. And the world is never a chore to explore. Between the old world remnants and the new world, the world itself makes you want to walk around and just look at stuff.
-Bottom line: don't let the negative reviews on here dissuade you. If you enjoyed the first game, this really does improve on that in basically every aspect. There are tons of weapons, things to do, more machines than ever, and just more of the Horizon you enjoy. The glitches will be gone before you know it.

Now to the gameplay. Horizon: Forbidden West is setting a new standard in graphics, must be the best looking game I have ever played so far (I think no one can deny this). The voice acting (especially the difference in tone between Aloy & Beta) is amazing. They improved a lot of aspects people suggested after Part 1 - better facial animations, more free climbing and a grapple hook system, and at least they tried to make better side quests. The flying option is magical, how the Slitherfang wriggles up on rocks or small towers is so intimidatingly cool, there are new interesting twists to the cauldrons and the Tallnecks, the new diving system especially in LasVegas is nice. The landscape is far more diverse and richly filled with life - really breathtaking landscapes, I like the many Faro robot corpses lying around together with other leftovers from the war, especially amazing are the Horus Titans here and there - you can see the war was far more intense in the West than in the areas in part 1. The story is a good continuation but fails to reach the originality and goose bump moments of part 1. I also like the development of Aloys character and I love the new introduced characters.
But there are negative aspects too, the weapon system became too complicated (f.e. too many amunition types, some of them don't even have a explanation or not as effective as the were in the first game) and the spear became quite useless (can't upgrady anymore, machines constantly stunlock you with damage too fast before you can combi attack them). So I liked the fighting system a lot more in Part1. I am still missing interesting side quests (the side character related quests were a good improvement tho), and I don't understand why the really nice flashpoint option to chose between dialogues (heart, brain, fist) is so rarely used. I also miss the wonderful richness of audio and text massages to find about what happened in the past (but this is kind of owed to the fact Aloy already knows most thing about past, the datapoints were one of my highlights in part1) - most of the ones in part 2 are quite boring. Upgrading good gear or armour becomes too hard after the first or second upgrade already.
Overall Forbidden West is a 8+/10, sadly still not a masterpiece. They improved a lot of aspects while in most other aspects they failed to reach the greatness of part 1. I am really looking farward to part 3 and my biggest wish remained unfullfilled - I WANT TO FIGHT A HORUS TITAN!!! EVERYONE WANTS TO FIGHT ONE OF THESE MONSTERS!!! :D PLEAAAASEEEE!

In H:FW Guerilla delivers a beautiful, huge open world set in the post-apocalyptic American west (Utah, Nevada, California), in which the player can discover new places, new machines, and new stories. So far, I spent 130+ hours with Aloy in this world and still haven't achieved 100% completion or fully unfogged the map. With that being said, I don't feel like I wasted my time: I want to go back in!

Besides the improvements in graphics and gameplay, I especially enjoyed all the additional animations and dialogue options with NPCs (exhaust them all & regularly speak with your friends - there's some intriguing lore that's easily missable!), the general quality of side quests (Witcher 3 level!), and the environmental storytelling (Naughty Dog level!)! One can tell the high production value of this game from any of those aspects.

My only gripe with Horizon Forbidden West - and the reason why it's not 10/10 for me - is the main story. Similar to H:ZD, the start is slow (which is fine) and creates opportunity for some mind-blowing reveals or story twists. However, the writers chose to play it very safe, with a 3rd game in mind, and ultimately failed to deliver on a convincing endgame. This was much better realized in H:ZD. Still, it's not a bad story by any means. There are some really cool story beats and moments in Horizon Forbidden West and, once NG+ is released, I will give it another go and main-line the game. Sometimes, a second more condensed play through is needed to fully appreciate the developer's vision.

The music as well; if you listen to it is incredible and the story itself keep you intrigued. However, there are sadly flaws. Firstly, I feel the fights are not as strategical as its processor and can be chaotic at times and at times I was getting flung around the place like a pinball. The bugs in this game nearly had me close to destroying my controller and are the real disappointment here. The races especially were infuriating, especially when I got stuck against the side, or when Aloy get's stuck against a tree for instance when trying to flee the chaotic fights. The vista points were equally just as frustrating and I just ended up googling them to get the answers and have them out of the way. All in all a great game which just fell short from being a classic. Hopefully in the months that come, there are fixes that sort these issues. Expand

This game is a masterpiece. The narrative is beautiful. I took a great pleasure to play secondary mission. Congratulations Guerilla

I'm really loving this game. I experienced a weird difficulty spike at around level 15 which is slightly annoying, but there's a custom difficulty option to help with that.

The game is very good. One of the best. I would rate it 10 out of 10 if it weren't for a large number of technical errors that I'm not used to seeing in games published by Sony.

I saw a review saying that in this game is feminist and man either suck or are villains. Wich is stupid considering that more than half of alloys allies are male and very competent and the villains are women. I will counter that review then.
Be cleared i love this game, it doesnt reeinvent the wheel but it upgrades vastlly on the first game. Grafics are way bether, traversal can be done

Be cleared i love this game, it doesnt reeinvent the wheel but it upgrades vastlly on the first game. Grafics are way bether, traversal can be done underwather and by flying, exploration and enviorment puzzles feel just like the sidequests more unique than ever.
I admit the game has a very big story with lots of cutscenes and if you are like me you will eat every single optional dialogue. In the end a very solid 9.0 game

The game becomes too boring. Side quests too repetitive. After a while the game feels like dragging. Overall it has too much copy past missions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After achieving Platinum trophy I can confidently say what a phenomenal game. The perfect sequel to already amazing predecessor Horizon Zero Dawn. Great characters, better machines, amazing map, weapons and so much more. Aloy is one of my favorite video game characters of all time. Cannot recommend it more Guerilla Games has nailed it.
The only thing frustrating to me was the resetting of traps when you die in Arena and the Cauldron puzzles. They take too much time. Otherwise, I have no complains.

20 Hours in, if you enjoyed Zero Dawn. You will Enjoy Forbidden West. Story is compelling, graphics are amazing. Performance mode works better for my set up. And the skills and leveling system are all an upgrade from from its predecessor. One of the few games where the sandbox checklist never gets dull, love getting lost in Horizons world!

Improves over the first game in pretty much every way. Side missions all feel important and not phoned in or repetitive. Exploring is always rewarded. And the direction the main story takes is riveting. Some really great, Game of Thrones quality, world building. Just like the first game, combat is excellent.

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
