If you liked Zero Dawn you'll like this one. The biggest issues are that the combat gets repetitive after a while and there's not much variety in the side quests. Taking down rebel camps gets kind of old after the 10th one. Great storyline, a little redundant or unnecessary at some parts but overall builds off of the story of zero dawn well. ganeplay is smooth and works like a charm. thereIf you liked Zero Dawn you'll like this one. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon Forbidden West is lazy, unseasoned, cashgrab and an insult to anyone who plays it.

I have played and completed both Horizon 1 with DLC, and Horizon Forbidden West, so this review comes as someone who has played both games and compares 1 to the other while playing them.

HFW is FULL of fluff content to make up for a lack of content. EVERYTHING is a puzzle. Need to get up to the top of a flight of stairs? Parkour here, jump here, climb this, jump there, etc. It makes events that would be easily tackled take an additional 5-10 minutes to do. It removes you from the gameplay experience to do anything at all. The first game didn't bog you down in the same way. HZD was fun in its exploration, HFW is a chore. A miserable chore. Want to climb a tall neck to expand the map? Sure, get to the tallneck, now complete a side mission unique to that tall neck. Cool, now you can climb it. For all of them. This is lazy.

The story isn't engaging in the same way either. For a lot of it I didn't care, then when I started to care, the writers legit said "I'm crunched for time, this makes sense", and listen to me, NO IT DIDN'T. The story seems to aim to be more realistic while failing to be realistic. The only person held to the standard of realism, is you the player. Which brings me to the next issue.

Aloy. Aloy didn't improve at all since HZD. The human enemies can block, parry, dodge, take cover, and seem to have an infinite amount of ammo. Aloy on the other hand can't do any of those things. The robots are MUCH more responsive than the first game. They're harder to knock down, harder to kill, and have some many abilities and high movement speed it's almost bothersome to even fight them. You also get knocked down, a lot. And you stay down, to be beaten to death before you can get up. And your only way to really beat the robots is with ammo, but you don't have a lot. Because of your limitation, ammo.

You NEED ammo to beat the robots of the game, resources have become far harder to come across because EVERYTHING requires resources. Because to my first point, everything is bogged down with fluff because the game lacks substance. Your green armor can be leveled up with resources 3 to 4 times. But so does every other weapon and armor in the game. This was done to add content and longevity to the game. I'm telling you now, it wasn't fun, and I didn't level any armor up fully.

Graphically the game is beautiful, but I beat the game in August of 2023. Every cutscene, Aloy's hair went wild with animations. The game is 69.99 in the PSN store right now.

This part contains spoilers: spoilers below

The enemies are futuristic humans with 1000s of years on our character and their allies. They have light shields that reflect all damage, mechs, and energy weapons. They lost...to enemies...shooting arrows at them. The writers created enemies that the character couldn't beat, so bad writing pushed the narrative along so they could surprise you with "Horizon 3!!!?!"

In conclusion, HFW is a spit in the face of gamers. They didn't care. It's a cash grab. It's full of fluff to keep the game going, terrible pacing, a weak character compared to BASIC human enemies, and even more so the robots and main enemies of the game. They caught lightning in a bottle the first time. The 2nd time was corporate forcing them to "do it again", and they failed. The fact that this was even nominated for Game of the Year is an insult to all of our intelligence.

The visuals and open-world exploring dynamics are absolutely fantastic, possibly the best ever I have played. 10/10 in terms of exploration and adventure. But everything else...yikes. The real kicked however is the battle system gameplay. Everything about it was obnoxious from top to bottom, clunky, prolonged, just a chore with no sense of reward or achievement.

Thankfully I am more interested in the open-world elements than the gameplay, so overall I still walked out with positive feelings overall, but unless there is a total rework of the fighting system I won't be pursuing further games in this series.

Some of the core gampeplay mechanics return, but with new addition of few tools and challenging machines, its never a dull moment. Inventory management, the traps/potions HUD, skill tree can feel little overwhelming but that's negligible.
I preferred the option of using stealth and striking off few enemies in the location before going on full combat mode. It was rewarding and felt simpler. Much more variety of weapons, traps etc available compared to 1st game which helps us try different approaches. Lots of meaningful of side quests and other activities to spend plenty of hours.

Coming to the PS5 features, I played in performance mode and the graphics was simply beautiful. Brilliant use of haptic feedback & adaptive triggers and some great sound effects especially machine sounds. Excellent background score all the way. Must play for all PlayStation gamers.

Story has setup for another sequel, waiting to see what Guerrilla games has to offer next.

Overall a really great game. Engaging mechanics, lots to do, a fantastic story with likable characters.

My only beef is that the climbing mechanics suck, and for some odd reason every NPC is LGBT. No problem with them but it knocks your immersion a bit when every other NPC is a minority orientation.

The inventory is incredibly bad again and the stash is no help. New outfit system sucks. The constant self-talk of Aloy is f*cking ridiculous, I hated it already after four, five hours... In the first game, all the collectables showed up automatically on screen once you were close. Now you have to click R3 every 30 seconds for that (I'm not joking here).
The minigame sucks. Way too much bloat for such a lightweight game. I'm so sick and tired of Sony gameplay anemic games. Apart from Haousemarque or Media Molecule, I won't buy their beautiful turd games day one anymore.

Firstly it should be noted that I thoroughly enjoyed the first game, it's combination of combat, lore/story, and beautiful landscapes was fantastic and whilst it borrowed a lot of ideas, they all came together to make something unique.

This game keeps the same great combat from the first game, mixing up the enemy types with some fantastic new designs. I was a little frustrated at the seeming lack of use for the rope caster this time round as it doesn't seem to tie down anything but very small machines making it largely useless. That aside though the combat is still awesome. The larger changes to combat are in the melee portion of the game giving you new combos that are great to pull off, but outside of the melee pits there aren't a huge amount of combat scenarios where you need to use them.

I was a little worried going into this game that they wouldn't be able to maintain the level of mystery that drove a lot of the first games narrative, and whilst that is true, it replaces it with more heart and some truly fun sci fi that keeps you guessing for a wile at least.

The graphics and open world on display here are truly amazing. You will often stop just to look around and marvel at your surroundings and whilst the game can rely on a map marker system at times, I would suggest turning most of it off and just exploring whatever takes your eyes fancy. Not all of it will have something to discover, but you may find a hidden under water cave replete with valuables to upgrade your weapons, a new hunting ground, a side quest, or just a random event.

I love the crafting system in this game, taking notes from monster hunter, you hunt down certain machines for certain parts. This becomes a test of skill as you have to shoot off said parts most of the time in order to collect them. I enjoyed this test of skill however some may find this a bit frustrating, however there is an option to just collect everything without having to shoot it off in options menu.

All in all this is a fantastic game, there are a few frustrations with traversal, but the story, crafting, graphics, combat, and not least musical score come together to make a great game. It was close to a 10, but I think some reliance on now overly familiar game elements prevents it from being a true master piece. I am now eagerly awaiting Horizon 3 whenever that may be.

Edit: Do yourself a favour and play on Hard, otherwise it will be. hours of firing arrows at easy machines. Hard and above make sure that you need to use the combat options at your disposal and make the game infinitely more interesting than it would be on normal.

    Progressive gameplay:
I can't help to notice some lesser things though.
I found the game way easier than part 1 which got me to me to not exploring other ways of fighting or upgrading my gear whatsoever. Maybe I should've played on very hard, but I'm not sure if that would reward other playstyles or wanting to grind gear. Because of that, all lootdrops felt useless for me till the very end. This made the game pretty much a very very good cinematic experience for me.

    Story missions:
I'll try to speak spoiler-free, The main missions are all very well designed and cool. But the very last main mission seems te be rushed, short and with fights not very interesting and straight forward. Ik was kinda let down by it.

    Characters:
The character Aloy and all other characters are very well written with interesting backgrounds, except for Alva, I don't want to spoil things, but I didnt feel anything for her. Acting is off en her story is weirdly akward. Maybe it is supposed to be like that sice she comes from far away, but it wasn't for me and she didn't fit in the group if you ask me.

Aloy's acting is good, her story is great, but why do I get the feeling she has down syndrome every time she laughs or gives some other facial expression. It made me giggle and feel bad at the same time every time. Maybe it's just me but it made me leaving the immersion.

So all and all, maybe with all these negative points people think it's a bad game. It's not. It's really good. Its simply less hardcore-ish and grindy (which I kinda like) and could be a 10 with some small improvements. For me it's a big 9. I even want to play the sideqquests since they're close to Witcher3 standards.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had to take time to rate the game, play it a good amount to be able to give a fair rating. At first impact it was a 10, great game loved it, the more I played the more I realized I despised Aloy attitude, she is an hero, but a cold one, no real human interaction no deepness, no possibility to have a real moment from her. While this is true for her the side characters are good and well constructed. The game play is great l, good controls and mechanic, side quests enrich the world but at the cost of being silly at times aloy doesn't stop for a friend but does to talk about someone else silly stuff. The platforming in. Any situation is there to slow you down, with no other good reason to exist. The item menu is still the same. Of the first game and could have been improved in a wheel, like for the main weapons. The open world is amazing, the world. Is rich and alive, breath taking at times, different quest and activities are present for you to enjoy it more. A must have game as the game play is very good, the hunt and the other mechanics are fantastic but it is not an innovating game. A pity as if they did include more human touch from aloy it would have been a 9, still it is a game that let you play it and love it. Expand

At the village you just talk to the chiefs and get permission to go further west. In the caves you just find relics of the past civilization. There’s climbing, some challenges, and some puzzles. By about 9 hours in I thought I was going to stop playing. But then the game got better. It got more exciting with more action. It was better the farther west you go- like to Las Vegas & San Francisco. I would have liked more time in San Francisco. I waited 5 years for this sequel and thought it would be great. I’m altering my original rating to an 9/10 or 4/5. Expand

    Pros:
    - stunning visuals and music. The best looking game I've ever seen. Both from artistic and technical standpoint. - almost every subsystem has been improved in comparison to previous game. Dialogues are better. Cutscenes are prettier. Fights has been changed so it is fresh and better balanced.
    - comparing to other games, handling equipment is not so much a hustle. Many things are done automatically or with a single tap. E.g. you see how many items of a type you have when you are browsing merchant wgoods.
    - great open world. Various activities. A lot to do and it does not get boring
    - base and companions with their stories are great addition

    Cons:
    - story is not as engaging as in the first game. The ending feels weird.
    - the world seems artificial sometimes. The tribes which are presented as brutal, are very polite and tolerant when you engage with them. I would say too polite. I would expect more cruelty from them
    - lack of choices. We are just choosing hthe tone of our reply but most of the story will happen regardless.
    - the protagonist is blant and barely likeable.

After the end of the previous game, you think to yourself "Wouldn't it be cool to have some more?" cause at the game it felt unfinished. There was actually a craving for more.

It also features literal drowning because in the past 40 years in gaming history, there have never been good water levels - and clearly nobody decided to start having those here, either.

I wanted to like it, and I love the first one, and underneath the trash collection, generic camps and boring crate puzzles there still is something special about this Horizon sequel. But there's nothing great here.

I hate this 0 or 10 toxic nonsense. This is not a good or bad game it's a good game with bad elements like most games and most things in life. The good ...are the graphics and the core gameplay loop. The music too. As well as the art style. On ps5 it looks nice when it runs smoothly. The new robots are quite neat but too few dinosaurs.

The bad or less good... is the story and writing which is much worse than the first one without the amazing audio tape stories and suprise twist. The characters are better than the first forgettable ones but still pretty bland and generic. The sound is all over the place too either due to tech issues or possibly bad work. The new gameplay elements are fussy and overly complicated or grindy at times. Lack of any innovation or new ideas of note bring the otherwise competent title down. It has far too many glitches at launch with game breaking bugs. The performance even on ps5 is poor with fps often dropping below 25fps which isn't at all what was advertised.

It might seem like I have more complaints but in the grand scheme of things they only stop a good game being great again. To be blunt if you liked the original it's more of the same. But if you have a choice or just played the original then I recommend you start with that and the excellent dlc.

    7.5 / 10 fix the glitches 8/10

Horizon Forbidden West is very visually impressive and plays well enough too. Unfortunately, it feels very outdated at the same time with predetermined climbing selections, a very limited arsenal, no friendly NPC interactions/reactions when attacked, etc.

It oddly feels a lot like Far Cry which adds to an overly familiar and boring experience imo. I think new gamers will enjoy it, but

I am truly taken a back as to how great this is. I don't do meta critic reviews, but again I am so impressed. The criticisms of the story are way overblows, its wonderful, and while I get a lot of people just skip stuff I am NOT one of those people. The only fault I had with it was its flimsy set-up that initially leads into the game - even with the reap video it doesn't gel like it should. The dialogue, the acting, and oh the incredible technology they use to bring movie like motional cap into real time - all just creates an insane level of authenticity to the story and characters that so impressive its jarring!

I've never been so captured by how a game implements its quests and world jobs other than say The Witcher 3 as well, there is a distinct lack of a grind feeling, and a huge feelings of just exploring and experiencing - even simple quests are wonderfully engaging and don't fall into usual Open World tropes - amazing.

Look I cannot say enough about this, it was on special (I think still is) and I got it, and I realise now that its worth every single dollar of the full price anyway. It gives so much and the fact that I haven't even talked to you about the graphics should say enough about how impressive this game is. Its incredible - buy it.

    1. annoying bugs. I've had a Leaplasher jumping all around me as if I didn't exist, duplicated machines that have no physical contact, and audio disappears randomly during cutscenes. not game-breaking, just annoying
    2. the path waypoints need significant rework. it does not point out the exact direction for you, but rather a pre-selected path for you to follow, which means sometimes it will ask you to go in an entirely opposite direction before it redirects you to the right one. it's frustrating and stupid.
    3. some side contents are just BS on any difficulty that is higher than normal, namely the Arena challenges. there is no f-ing way anyone can complete them in such a limited time. and it makes me question the design decisions.
    4. Aloy's character development took a very very long time. i disliked her so much in the beginning, it demotivated me to engage in any side quests because she always says the same thing to everyone who wants to be nice to her, "oops, sorry, no time to talk, gotta go" "I don't need no nobody, I've got a world to save, get outta my way"

Enough ranting. As I said, I still enjoyed the whole game and there are plenty of reasons for me to keep playing. Not to mention the gorgeous graphics and really impressive animation work.

Combat is varied and satisfying, though I would say it improves massively around halfway once you have most of the weapons and abilities. It can be quite repetitive and frustrating at times, early on, and a bit overwhelming given how much there is to learn. As for the criticisms...

Platforming/climbing is sub par compared to the likes of Tomb Raider and Uncharted.

I found the story a convoluted Macguffin chase, with the writers struggling to hold together a compelling plot, plus a cliffhanger ending leaving it feeling somewhat unfinished. The cutscenes keep the sometimes tedious and overwrought dialogue of the original. Some interesting ideas though, and the overall world is still fascinating. Sylens is the highlight as far as characters go.

Animations are top notch with a great story, a great sequel for a great game that paves the way for a final third installment.

Very good sequel with amazing graphics and good enough story. More diverse machines and more in depth combat which is nice. For me to be a 10 it would have needed a better story. Looking forward for the next one.

My main issue with the game so far is that being 11 hours in I've only lightly scratched the surface, unlocking about 1/5 of the map and have a long way to go... according to howlongtobeat it roughly takes about 43 hours for main story and extras, now depending on what that means I feel being someone who will want to complete all side quests and main quests, I may fall under the 40-50 hour bracket, which I feel is going to be far too long for me personally considering I'm only really near the beginning and I'm already not invested in any of the characters or the main plot.

I've also encountered numerous game breaking bugs such as, Aloy being stuck between a rock and a step, the mount just continuously running in one spot, and Aloy throwing attacks rapidly but not landing them.... I've also had immersion breaking bugs such as, floating corpses, floating objects, mount being stuck in background during dialogue cut-scenes...

Gameplay wise I am having fun despite the bugs, but you could literally replace the characters with completely different characters and a completely different story and I wouldn't even notice or be bothered as none of those two aspects are interesting me at all... It's literally a carbon of Zero Dawn with a few improvements, but with a less interesting Story, and characters you either forgot or care little about.

I'm a bit disheartened paying £70 for this game, I think if you can pick it up for £45-50 then go for it, but it doesn't justify the new gen price bump, and I normally let off reviewing games until I complete them but because the game hasn't really offered much in 11 hours, and has already become a bit tedious, I don't really need to complete it to formulate an opinion.

IMO this is the greatest game I have ever played. I absolutely love everything. The world my god. The weapons are just great and versatile. The story is intriguing and keeps you wanting more. Characters are also great. I haven't played a game that gives me more pure enjoyment then this game. Had a smile on my face the whole time. GOTY for me.

Good. Not Great. I really wouldn't agree with everyone saying it's better than the original. Bigger is not always better. The world is massive with a lot to do, and the graphics are literally jaw-droppingly good on PS5. The main failure is they have gone too heavy with Aloy becoming a bit of a know-all and you feel she is patronizing to the NPC's (leading to alienating the player slightly) due to the script writing. Some of her dialogue is literally cringe-worthy at best. The story becomes very convoluted because of this and there are no real surprises. Aloys constant narrative about where to go and what to do does become grating after a while. If the script was in place then maybe this wouldn’t matter so much and you would overlook it. Where the first game succeeded hugely, I feel this falls flat, if there is a third installment, I hope they can get the script and the flow right. This game should really have been a discovery of the West - like in the first game you felt as the player you were discovering the world and her story, just like she was. The heavy-handed ‘Aloy is here to save the world and she knows everything’ approach really should have been saved for the third game. I REALLY cared about Aloy in the first game – not so much in this one… I felt like I was just along for the ride. Expand

This game has so much more than I wish for in an open world game. 1- Great Side Quests with deep stories and memorable events.
2- Great variety of weapons and armors.
3- Great enemies both machines & human. 4- machines are way more challenging than the first game and just overall enjoyable. 5- Aloy’s new abilities and skills are so fun and I enjoyed seeing trying the new skills in action.

8- Uncovering the secrets in the deep waters and caves is just so much fun and the underwater world is just so beautiful.
9- The main story… I hesitated to mention it bc I don’t want to spoil it so I’ll just say it is so AMAZING and mind blowing.. it made me want to know more and more and more about ALL the characters throughout my whole playthrough (which took about 80+ hrs)
10- Racing, Strike, Arenas… etc.. just so much to do in this beautiful masterpiece.

Forbidden west is a true masterpiece.
Better than the original in almost everything.
Great story, great characters and mega art direction/graphics. For me the only flaw was some aspects of the gameplay design, mainly in climb controls and some in combat. I do think they have some more ground to cover in the gameplay design to make it more precise and responsive. And NO microtransaction

I had high hopes for this following New Dawn and I can't truly say I was disappointed but when I got past the stunning graphics (minor glitches forgiven) and complex storyline the additional complexity of the game mechanics forcing one back to older areas because it takes a future obtained item to be able to get past an obstruction was frustrating. The lack of ability to climb (being forced to use identifiable designed pathways) was often frustrating.

The realisation that choices that felt like they should have been significant had little bearing on the actual game outcomes was a disappointment although a few that produced world cosmetic changes were good.

The huge number of conversation choices, particularly with companions, became frustrating instead of informative.

The "completionist" objectives were gratuitously excessive.

The ridiculous twitch mechanics parkour profoundly frustrating. The complexity of ruins puzzles unnecessarily high.

Some combat encounters in quests not progressing as they should have (probably bugs that will eventually be fixed) a huge time waster.

I thought I would be annoyed by most of the best "gear" being hidden behind arenas irrelevant to the story but I completed without.

I don't think I have been so frustrated in a game that I have also enjoyed enough to simply skip the frustrating parts to complete the game.

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
