This game gives me weird nausea. I have ps5 plus LG oled tv and the graphics / motion in performance mode is jerky and resolution mode frame rate is subpar. I’m extremely disappointed in the state this game was released in, even after 1.05 patch didn’t make a huge difference. At this point I can’t play it, hopefully further patches address issues

I know this is a problem for the last decade in general with Western games going for "realism", translation: purposely ugly characters, and Forbidden West is another in a seemingly endless parade of these games. The developers spoiled the appearance of the character, making it absolutely unattractive and even disgusting. Because there is no way to edit the character's face in the game - I won't play it in principle. Such spitting and mockery of the players - stop putting up with this propaganda.

I wanted to love this game but the glitches got me. These “beautiful” pics people keep showing are cutscenes, and Sony pics. The real game isn’t very polished and is a bit boring. It’s been such a long wait for anything new from Sony, and this game will do for now, but I’m. It getting the return on my investment.

It feels hollow playing this game and i kinda regret having purchased it when i could just wait for more game reviews before preordering it. Aloy is very uninteresting character as if there’s no character development and i feel like taking down huge machines like tremortusk is not a challenge. Im sorry i think the robo-dinosaurs or robotic enemies have to go because the designs are all similar eventhough they’re different. You may design a kraken and it feels the same when it’s a robot. Being an open-world game, all the landscapes are unique and just a joy to explore, which is really important given its genre. The gameplay is one of the other things this game does better than the first one (makes me think the devs. listened to the fans and improved everything they asked for).

All the voice actors did a phenomenal job, and the motion-capture team got SOOO much better! Goodbye robotic faces! Hello cinematographic dialogue scenes! At last, the soundtrack is, as usual, beautiful!

The art style is interesting, but is let down by poor performance and bugs. This game is a huge step down in polish when compared to the likes of God of War and Ghost of Tsushima.

What happened is she had PS5 black screen after system software error CE-108262-9
Didn't think anything of it wanted to continue playing and the game wouldn't start anymore.
I restarted the ps5 and still got the same error.
when booting the system software, the ps5 hangs and restarts over and over again. when I get to the PS5 menu, the lettering from games etc is missing and everything is hacked and doesn't want to be the way it has to be.
I did a hard reset on the ps5, reinstalling the system software update didn't help.
I noticed that icc can only play ps4 games on the ps5.
I have sound and graphic problems with the ps5 games so that the games are automatically terminated with error message CE-108255-1

I haven't completely reinstalled the system software yet.

I don't know if that will do anything.

It says on the internet that the game is bricking the ps5.

Sony has not yet commented on this.

This is why you upgrade to a PS5. The game look gorgeous. I have been playing on performance mode. This means 60fps and 1440p output. My son has been playing on quality mode at 30fps and full 4k. Quality mode is tempting. As good as 60fps feels, quality mode looks so much more realistic. There is no right or wrong answer on which mode to play.

Quality mode is tempting. As good as 60fps feels, quality mode looks so much more realistic. There is no right or wrong answer on which mode to play.

The story in the game is just as great as in the prior game. Masterclass is the the best way to describe the story from bits of lore in the world to the main story and side stories. This game is like the PS5’s The Witcher 3 moment. So far, the PS5 has seen a few timeloop games and PS5 upgrades of PS4 games. Only now are we getting a truly giant AAA game to show off the system. (No disrespect to Ratchet and Clank. I’m sure the game is great but at $70, I will wait for a sale.) My play through of this vast world took 89 hours and I still have 11% of the game left to complete (although I have no idea what else I could do!).

The game continues the addicting robot fighting. The same rules apply although traps seem less useful this time, maybe because of the trap limit (starting with 2). The robots seem more aggressive, like they did in the Frozen Wilds expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn. At normal mode, death is no stranger and many fights will exhaust health and healing supplies. Scab your enemies to plan accordingly. Even after finishing the game, I feel the itch to fight machines. Maybe its the design of the beasts. Why is there no toy line to accompany this game?

This game is not perfect. I usually buy a game on sale long after all the bugs are fixed. There are a few graphical issues like items floating or enemies stuck in the environment. The most inconvenient bug is when you cannot interact with a quest item. Reloading from a save point has fixed these problems for me. There are few items and interactive objects that appear as leftovers from the development process. These may be easter eggs.

The game also overestimates my patience for grinding for upgrade gear. Levels are obtained quickly enough that unlocking skills was a non-issue. But upgrading gear is a chore. Too much of a chore. My advice is to select “Custom” for difficulty and choose “Easy Loot”. Even with Easy Loot, you have to destroy a dozen of the same machine to upgrade high level gear. Maybe don’t bother. Many of the upgrade issues have been resolved via patches, and your experience will be better than mine. The robot dinosaur fights have their own issues. Traps seem less useful. The robots are a little too aggressive. You are supposed to shoot off a weapon from the robot and use it against them. Good luck. By the time you pick it up, the robot is on top of you or spamming you with area of effect attacks. The best strategy is always to find a piece of cover above the robot’s spawn point and a safe distance from its area attacks. I would love to see more strategies that are just as viable, such as fighting from a mount or leading the robot into a gauntlet of traps. Or maybe I’m playing it wrong. Sandbox games like this can support many strategies.

All-in-all, Horizon Forbidden West is a must-play experience. Because of the patches since launch, I can give this game a perfect 10/10. However, the game really nails the accessibility options. You will be able to finish this story and have fun doing it. Not sure how you handle a Fireclaw on ultra hard. Those were tough fights.

The jumping animation seems off too like she doesn't spring off the ledge. A number of times I've missed jumps simply because I didnt get enough momentum. I'm currently playing dying light 2 and breath of the wild and their world traversal light years ahead of HFW. The combat is also off. There is like a half second pause after every melee attack that puts you at a disadvantage against a lot of machines who use leaping attacks(damn near every machine I've encountered so far). The machines in this game have ungodly closing speed and range attack accuracy. Go in for a heavy attack and be ready to run, slide, and roll for your life. Planting traps/mines/drinking potions also have the same delay as you have to wait for aloy to complete her animation. She can't run and drink potions at the same time. Finally, I just don't find aloy interesting. She has to be the dullest protagonist of all the playstation franchises. No emotion or personality. Its all business with her. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Forbidden West is pretty much the same deal as Zero Dawn (obviously excluding the story). The open world is rich with various sidequests and activities to do. The graphics, facial animations and lip synching are among the best I've ever seen yet, and the voice acting, particularly from Ashly Birch as Aloy is great. Unfortunately it's just not as good. It consists of a decent story but ends inconclusively, the climbing controls are even more finnicky and unresponsive than the first one, the underwhelming combat was not improved, the tutorials and challenges in the melee pits are simply badly designed and there are way more bugs including some that even required me to reload a save. That would've been acceptable had it only affected the PS4 version, but there's no excuse for it to happen on PS5. It's still mostly a fun game, just a step back. Bigger but not better. Expand

The game is absolutely gorgeous on PS5. Better in every way from the first game. I would like to see a 40FPS mode added for 120hz TVs to more games like this though. The performance mode looks good but not quite as good as fidelity. I feel like a 40fps fidelity mode with 4k resolution and slight tweaks would be perfect for this game. Maybe one day this will be more standard.

Another big gripe I have is the music. the graphics of this game is gorgeous and vibrant and it has a huge and varied world for you to explore.
but the problems start with the core gameplay and missions which is bloated and sometimes boring. I still have serious problems with the core concept of this game which is fighting advanced robots using bow and arrows and a spear that doesn't deal much damage we are fighting huge robots not bears and wolves or something! most times I struggled to find the weak spots of the enemy robots and if you shoot non vulnerable parts of them it deals little to no damage and it annoys me. the game constantly makes you confused and each enemy is like a puzzle, some people might find this cool but it's actually very annoying so in some boss fights I had no choice than setting the difficulty on story thank god the story difficulty exists.
the side missions are so boring that i couldn't bother to continue doing them but if you don't do the side missions and just continue doing story missions you will end up much weaker than the enemies who move fast and shoot rockets at you and you only have a good old bow and arrow and a useless slingshot.
overall I rank this game 7/10 just because of it's great story and universe even though I hate the core mechanics of this series' gameplay

HFW suffers from bland characters (with few exceptions), and a lackluster story that goes completely off the rails towards the end. Someone compared it to Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, which seems fitting.

The story doesn't offer too many interesting elements. The most interesting one from HZD was Aloys backstory and the story of... well, the state the world is in, really. But that story has already been told, so what's left? Not too much besides adding "just one more bad thing" and clan wars. And the latter I couldn't care less about.

Another issue is Aloy's writing. The way she acts towards a certain character we know from HZD makes no sense. Nothing that character has done warrants that treatment at that point in time. Furthermore, she keeps talking during gameplay, sometimes pretty much spelling out solutions to puzzles after less than a minute of looking around. Look, Aloy, I love you, but you need to shut up for a minute.

The gameplay is largely the same, which is okay, I guess. More of the same.

The new areas to explore are unfortunately rather forgettable. The only one I remember is the flooded underwater area you visit at some point during the story. The rest is also "more of the same" but in a different location.

I didn't encounter too many bugs a few months or so after release, there was only a racing minigame that broke in a spectacular fashion, which was more funny than annoying. Performance was good, the 60 FPS mode is lovely. It's so smooth but looks beautiful at the same time. I hope all developers adopt this on console.

Honestly, unless you're a die-hard fan of the world of Horizon and you're super interested in clan wars, you should probably skip this game or get it at a steep discount.

Visually this game is amazing as well, especially the water and deep forests are beautiful to look at. The variety in landscapes is high and they connect in a very natural way.

While I did enjoy some of the characters, there were just too many. The good thing is most side characters get their own sidequests so they at least get fleshed out a little, but still not enough to really connect to them. This is one of my biggest problems with the game as well. Although the story setting was good and in theory emotional, it was lacking emotion most of the time. Additionally, the clear goal of the developers was to go bigger not better and while the story isn't terrible, the pacing and writing, especially in the second half, are off. Aloy's personal journey is still the most intriguing and her character is still great, but she doesn't see a lot of development here. Out of all the characters she is the best written one by far, which helps the game a lot since she is the main character. I was thinking about giving this a 9/10 instead since I was addicted to playing and I will get that plat trophy for sure, but I just didn't feel the way I did after the first game when the credits rolled. In fact, a part of me was happy the story was done so I could move on to doing more fun stuff. It is a great game and one of the best I've played in the last few months, but the story issues keep it from being a masterpiece like this first one.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
