One of the best game I’ve ever played, visually stunning and massive improvement from the first one, an open world that has exceeded my expectations in every way possible and a dense and complex story which won’t be like to some because of those reasons but will be the perfect one for people who likes movies, books and tv shows with this level of complexity, a masterpiece

I really enjoyed this sequel. It changes up the plot pacing and themes vs the first game to keep things fresh.

The face modeling also stood out compared to the first game, where the models really looked like they were talking in this one.

This game really doesn't fill in a ton of gaps from the first game, so you'll probably want to play the first.

There’s no way this could ever be a 0/10 game, even if you hated the story , the gameplay and attention to detail alone deserves a 7 minimum, not to mention there being nearly 0 issues at launch with regards to performance and bugs.

Such a shame so many people review bomb it with rediculous of low score for no reason, they’ve clearly not played it and just want to hate on Sony for whatever reason.

3.) Bugs and Unfinished - Where? Cyberpunk Much?
4.) Co op - PVP - When would this game genre ever have that, why lower the quality with that?
5.) Characters themselves - So are we actually talking Horizon Zero Dawn at this point? They are waaaay more expressive and not "choppy and bland." like their predecessors.
6.) Bad Writing - So far story wise its been great, a step up from previous title. Are you sure your not reading a script from The Room?
7.) Combat Mechanics - Feel clunky. ( -_- ) No far from it. Alloy moves much more fluently then she ever has, with a more extensive arsenal at your finger tips.
I feel this game has come a long way from its previous title in the series, the longer the game takes to make or is delayed, the better the game will be, always.

I could not stomach the cringe from the first game so I went into this one trying so hard to like it, but I just can’t. There is a really unique concept here in terms of story, but it’s executed so generically that it’s just not interesting. My biggest worry going into the game was the story. HZD had such a unique story and I was worried that HFW wasn't going to be able to capture that same charm now that the mystery behind the Old Ones had been revealed. But holy cow has HFW delivered on the story! I cannot get enough of the lore and I'm always choosing every available dialogue option to hear every little tidbit. Secondary tasks are added as if absolutely for the sake of appearance and are of no interest. Together with a disgusting level design, in which the player's route is sometimes completely illogical.
I liked the first part, but the second does not bring anything new and interesting, but rather the opposite, the new content, which was added as if for show, is more of an annoyance than an interest. Considering that Sony has a lot of games in this setting, it is clearly inferior in uniqueness.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely amazing!! An improvement on the first one in almost everything! Sure, combat could get very hectic and I cursed at the screen quite a few times, but even so - it took me a little over 100 hours of mostly glorious playtime to finish the main quest, all major side missions, and explore this huge and living world to my heart's content, and I only encountered two or three times where there was a slight glitch in the environment where a plant clipped into Aloy somewhere for a second - no other other bugs whatsoever. A very polished game from the day one! I had quite high expectations, and they managed to surpass even those. There were fewer side quests, but every one of them felt hand-crafted and interesting. There were tons of other , more generic repetitive things to do as well, such as taking over enemy camps and getting specific machine parts, and I liked that these were in their separate category, not labelled as side quest. So I knew what I could expect, pretty much. The graphics were good, the only thing that stood out a bit was the cutscene weirdness sometimes... characters would have awkward pauses, or they would look in a weird direction, not directly at their conversation partner. I don't whether that was deliberate, but overall I can forgive that for the whole incredible experience this game delivers. The story is an interesting continuation from the first one - this game delivers something truly unique in its entirety, something that has not been told in this form before, which is pretty rare, actually. There were so many moments where I thought, 'Oh my god, I have never done this in a video game before!!', and that's quite a feat. Even the ending credits are mind-blowingly beautiful. The only thing I am sad about right now, is that I might have to wait another five years to be able to play the final installment of this amazing experience. I really can't wait to fly to victory on the wings of the ten again :) Expand

And the gameplay is almost as good as the graphics. Fighting machines is still a blast and even more immersive. The story, the writing and acting are all excellent as well. This game is very well rounded. I did have some minor issues with this game however. There were a few glitches here and there with machines getting stuck in walls, but nothing major. Also, I noticed traversal over rough terrain was not very smooth. Some of the dialogue would drag out a little, but most that was optional so it's no big deal. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon Forbidden West - A great game for the most part, but let down by little things that begin to add up. FW offers a lot for the player who is willing to sink the hours in. The trouble is, will you? Over my near 36 hours on this title I can’t say I put it down overwhelmed or astonished. Though there were moments that truly sent a shiver down my spine for their uniqueness (desert/Las Vegas moment with the embers lighting it all up), they are often let down by lengthy tunnel/dungeon crawls. It seems the devs decided to ‘drag’ out this title imo. Every. Single. Thing. You do, you ride for ages, get there, then the cliche ‘oh but you must help me first’. It’s really beginning to grind my gears with open world games. The two just don’t combine well. At all. Yet developers seem to have a massive hard on for it. This coupled with the not so smooth or fluent movement system in this game which has you climbing objects and walls where Aloy will be fine then suddenly grind to a halt, or fail to grab the object in the first place. Though this didn’t happen to me a lot, it was enough to sour my taste for any exploration in the game. It’s unique at first, but soon the cauldrons and delves, every where you go for anything quest or story related often involves going underground. I don’t want to. I have this lush and gorgeous open world up above? It’s things like this, the constant move x to x position, carry heavy object to position, grapple this into place, tear off this grill. It’s repetitive and gets boring, all to quick because you do it over and over and we have been in games for years now. Aether was my favourite, shortly followed by Neptune. But the rest of the game just fell flat for me, with no real compelling element apart from the Far Zenith. Beta could have been this fantastic character along with the others you encounter which are genuinely great! But the relationship between B and Aloy? It just didn’t make sense. How can Aloy be so compassionate and caring for strangers, yet a clone, who is evidently a vital component to progressing she has an almost teenager outburst at because shes been forced her entire creation? It’s things like this that choked up the story for me. So by the time I’d collected the first three Gaia nodes I was simply burnt out. The pacing just wasn’t great, I firmly believe the game could have benefited from shortening the main story just that smidge, then allowing you to do some of the beautifully crafted side missions. 7/10 - The graphics while superb don’t redeem a clunky cluster fudge of a story and mediocre (I’m talking worst than the original AC) climbing mechanics. Whilst the combat feels as fresh and as fun as ever, I was hoping for a lot more from this game considering the world on offer. Maybe it’s just because I got burnt out on the story, but it would of been fantastic to see more of it incorporated instead of shoving me underground constantly. Add on the lengthy travel times until you can fly, (which comes far to late imo) I wonder where they will take this next. Guerilla did a fine job for the most part and I certainly cannot fault their vision for design etc. But clear up the muddy pacing, poor movement and give us more of this open world. I gave Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition a 10.
But I'm going to give this game only a 1 because of the graphics. Why the main character doesn't feel the same as the previous game? why do they make it more "unlikeble".. And I don't want to spoil it but I found out what happens in the DLC... 70 dollars to the trash.

I really enjoyed HZD but this expansion just makes me want to stop playing it all.

Let’s talk about the positives parts first. The game is absolutely gorgeous in both performance and Quality thanks to recent update that solve most of the problems of performan even tough they still are pop up that subsist and some shimmering but it is one of the most beautiful game I ever play. The character models and animation improved a lot compared to Zero Dawn. Some of the side stories are really well written and may feel even better than the main quests. If you are used to play open world adventure games, you might be able to at least appreciate this game.

Let’s talk about the negative parts know. The worst part in my opinion is the combat system, it was already bad in Zero Dawn and while it improved a little it still doesn’t live up to today’s standards. You can’t lock your ennemies so if they jump or fly too much or you are fighting multiple robots at the same, it becomes an unfun mess. Not quiet sure how the devs fought it was find not to include a lock system for the enemies but here we are, the combat are the worst gameplay parts in the game. And while dodging enemies attacks, it’s not rare to get stuck on parts of the decor that you couldn’t see thanks to the bad camera. The AI that « help » you on some fights are completely useless. The main story isn’t that good either, it tries too hard and some parts are hard to swallow or make little sense even of the game take action in the 30th century. The game took a lot of inspiration on other popular games like Breath of The wild, The Witcher, AC, Mass Effect but somehow manage to do less than all of those games in the part or copied. And if you enjoyed the liberty that some of those games gave you in character building, you are out of like. The game barely let you make any decisions and you can’t really influence Aloy personality and how she choses to deal with things. For a true RPG fan, it might be a big deal. The games still to this day still have technical issues and bugs, I got stuck in the air and it decors a few time or enemies that walk on the air, their AI isn’t that good either, you can walk in front of them and they won’t see you. The combat system is just weak and boring. In that kind game, not being able to influence the conversation makes you care less and not wanting to listen to all of those conversations. So yeah if you are used to some higher profile RPGs, this game is playable but it won’t live to those standards.

I'll start of by saying that the world for this game is amazing. Probably the greatest attention to detail I've ever seen that makes it feel like I'm exploring a real world. Has an engaging story too!

That being said, all the extra visuals and details make the combat a miserable experience. Especially when you play on a hard difficulty that makes it so that you can die at any moment.

That being said, all the extra visuals and details make the combat a miserable experience. Especially when you play on a hard difficulty that makes it so that you can die at any moment. Get stuck on a small rock or twig? Dead. Got too close to a wall? You'll start climbing it and now you're dead. Fences, logs, rivers, rocks, and all sorts of other details that make the game visually amazing serve to destroy many of the combat encounters.

If you don't play on a hard difficulty and you're into good story, this game is a 10. If you're like me and you're all about combat and challenge, you'll probably find this extremely frustrating.

The armour and weapons upgrade system is overly convoluted, it took 5 hours just to find the resources I needed to fully upgrade my bow and armour set and by that point it wasn’t worth using as I found a higher level weapon which then also needed hours of grinding resources to upgrade. The machine combat is where this game shines just like the first game. The designs are spectacular and the fights can really be something special, this is the games strong point.

The story is nowhere near as engaging or as interesting as the first game.

New rideable mounts are cool but still feel very restricted and “janky”

Now, the worst part of this game, combat vs human enemies! The human enemies are tougher than thunder jaws and hit harder than them too. One section of the game (without spoilers) involves fighting a group of human enemies in a cave system. This was the jankiest combat experience and just wasn’t fun at all. I was clipping into walls, falling off edges, being locked into consistent stagger animations and my melee attacks were doing next to zero damage. The melee combat and human enemy combat needs a complete revamp! The best way to deal with humans is stealth and even that gets repetitive and frustrating when enemies will see you through a wall or your stealth kill triggers a generic melee attack instead resulting in the entire basing knowing your location. Side quests are decent but a lot of them are just fetch quests or go here and kill this thing. Pretty disappointed with how this one turned out. I hope Horizon 3 changes the issues I have above because in my opinion they ruin the game for me, I just didn’t find it fun.

Aloy has got to be one of the most insufferable characters ive ever played. Shes acting so cocky the whole game. And her FOCUS does EVERYHING FOR HER. Without the focus she is nothing. GG really thought they created some epic character and this whole game they are just stroking their d***s to how cool she is.
Her voice performance is mostly good but very often she sounds out of breath even in cutscenes where nothing is happening.

And i hope you like the focus thingy because youll hear it 500000 times its so annoying.

People tend to praise the combat. I think its **** Sure the robot designs are incredible. But they dont work in fights. Every machine is way too eratic. Id spend most of the time just jumping in the air to get the slow mo shot off. And they STILL move to fast to aim at specific components. I legit spent 50% of the combat in slow mo and it sucks. The art direction for machines is amazing. For the tribes however... some of the most uninspired designs ever. They all look the same except for their armour color. And they all live 5km from eachother so they dont have any unique culture. Just reskins.

The cauldrons are good especially the tallneck one. And the map design is great.

And that flying thing? It's a blast! you'll feel like a bird soaring over those mind-blowing landscapes. While Forbidden West has hands down, the best faces, facial animation, acting and general graphics of any games, it looses some point for me.
First, the combat is still messy and you either get CRUSHED, or will 2 shot everything by the end. Some of the new enemies (snake) have tiny weakspot and are constantly moving all around; how am I supposed to hit them ?
Second, the new climbing system, while great, will more than not, make Aloy grab on a surface when you absolutely dont want to. Its the same with water and Aloy will swim when knee-deep in water in mid combat... It creates for very frustrating bits.
Next the story fell flat for me, I cant say much without spoiling, but early on, a "twist" do a 180 of the "grounded" sci-fi that was Zero Dawn, we go hyperdrive into boring stuff...
Finally, the game is RIDDLED with bugs and I feel little level design and other core mechanics were properly tested. Aloy wont grab on anything if you dont have a running momentum, making for again, frustrating climbs and level exploration. Most animations of her jumping and grabbing a ledge will see her go inside all geometries as they didnt they of the animation + level design symbiose. In half the cauldron I would get a bug where my melee attack would but cancelled after the 1st frame.
I will end by saying I dropped the game at around level 40 when a quest pit me against a Stormbird and any damage received drops them 10m below in one frame, making chain damage impossible (and breaking the immersion pretty bad) + He would only spam an attack where he goes too high above you (and you cant target directly above you head) and them meteor crash onto you. By the time you get up from the recoil, he his charging again; making it impossible to kill and pass that quest.
It's a shame really because the game is filled with content and one fan less critical than me could absolutely love the game. But I feel they went too big on quantity and very little on quality (other than art department) this time.

I watched my partner play Horizon Zero Dawn as I was playing Forbidden West and it was that comparison that helped me see just how much better we have it. I am absorbed in it all this go round and the never ending conversations don't grate on my patience like they did in Zero Dawn; it must be the top-notch animations and character visuals because the story itself is just as convoluted and filled to the brim with information I don't really care about. This game isn't perfect but it really is close. The main issue I have with Forbidden West are dropped frame rates while in a battle, and I mean like seriously low when there is too much action on the screen. It doesnt happen that often but it is enough to kill the moment(s). Expand

The story or maybe the history is as intriguing as in the first game. The last chapter is the weakest part of the narrative, but as it sets up a third and final game, I can live with that.
Characters are written quite well, Aloy is a bit different than in the first game. A bit more frustrated like "god damn it, i don't want to look at your mushroom store" or "i don't have time for this

A bit more frustrated like "god damn it, i don't want to look at your mushroom store" or "i don't have time for this BS, I'm coming through". It's a behavior similar to mine, as a player - there's the gate, just let me through. Nooooo, you need to complete 54 quests for it to open. Horizon says - fork it, we're coming through. A nice refreshment.

Fight mechanics as good as in the original game, characters look like real humans, not some bimbos or hunks with 6-packs. No, they look like they would survive in such a wild world.

The game is big, I've spent over 70hrs, finished the main story and still at only 54%. Lots of stuff still to be done.

Also... it's visually stunning and I have a PS4. What they achieved at Guerilla with this game is magnificent. I found myself looking at lightning effets (machines light going through high grass which flows on the wind...). Very very impressive.

I am giving it a 9/10 because of somewhat of a letdown of the final act and not that intuitive skill development trees - similar abilities are enhanced in various places so you don't clearly see the end result of this or other choices you make.

Other than that - definately a system seller, great adventure which squeezes all of PS4's juices to the max, still enabling stable FPS. This is how things should be done, CDPR :)

Horizon Forbidden West is Sony's main selling point for the PS5 right now. There are other titles that have been released already but this is the one that Sony has put the most effort behind advertising. And it certainly works in a lot of aspects. But some of the same problems from the previous game return here and a very by the numbers plot really was a bit of a let down.

There's alot of good here that people will point to as a system seller. The graphics are phenomenal and it has some of the best motion capture I've ever seen in a game, especially in the faces. It really made a huge impact for my play through as the emotions of every single character, whether they were just a small, bit player or a huge main character, was amazing. There's also tons of talent here as many famous voice actors show up here that you will recognize from major games and anime. Lance Reddick reprises his role as Sylens and Carrie Anne-Moss from the matrix movies plays a new character central to the story, and both of them really steal the show whenever they're on the screen. All characters are wonderfully crafted and make the world really feel alive. It was easily the best part of the game by a long shot.
The biggest issue with the game revolves around there just being too much of everything. There's too many different types of weapons to keep track of, each with their special types of ammo. There's also WAY too many things on the map when you start to open up things as the game progresses. It's really intimidating at times to see the sheer amount of icons on the map. The map size is huge too so there can be dozens upon dozens of things to see on the map and can make it very hard to find the one tiny icon you want to go too. I just didnt really care about most of the side activities, especially the ones that really don't give you any rewards besides a useless new outfit or something that you get a ton of even by the mid game.
The story, as well, really didnt stick with me. Its a direct sequel to the first game which, if you haven't played through, as well as its DLC, then you're going to super lost, even with the recap cutscene at the start. Things also were very by-the-numbers too and it felt very video-gamey for lack of a better word. Plot twists were SUPER obvious and with Aloy's Mary Sue like tendencies, where she immediately has all the answers to any and all problems that crop up, really took me out of most cutscenes and major plot points. It really misses the whole discovery part from the first game as to why things are the way they are. Now that we know, they have to continue to escalate beyond "murder robot animals" in a primitive setting that was the most compelling part of the first game. And with the set up for a 3rd game at the end here, things are even more crazy than before.
At the end of the day though, Forbidden West is an easy recommendation to anyone who's played through the first game and its DLC. While the story may not have been as engaging as the first one, the stellar acting and terrific motion capture go a long way to keep you engaged. While I may have liked the first one better, I still had a good enough time here to recommend it.

    Bigger. Bolder. Better.
Open world Tomb Raider with robot dinosaurs and a good story, with light rpg elements and amazing gameplay. There was a game once rumored to cost 500 million to make, I believe this game is up there as production values go.
Pros: - Best looking open world game, guerrilla has set the bar. Open world is fantastic. - Overall gameplay, machine robot design -

    So-So
    - a little too many bandit camps for my liking
    - would liked a little bit more unique weapons/ outfits, instead of weapon modifiers.
    - ok skill tree

    Cons:
    - first 8 hours or so was a slog to get through

Horizon has enchanted me again. After a slow start, a graphically beautiful, sophisticated sequel comes, polished in every aspect, and underscored by a great soundtrack on top of that. The sequel was simply a success. Everything that worked before works even slightly better now. [Issue#317]

Horizon Forbidden West is Guerrilla's best game to date, taking Aloy to new heights with a blockbuster release that meets the high standards set by PlayStation in recent years. While it's totally worth fans jumping in on day one, it's perhaps better to wait a few weeks until all the bugs are ironed out.

Horizon Forbidden West is exactly what everyone thought it would be: an amazing game. It has an open world with plenty of things to do and places to explore, fights against some really well-developed machines and stunning visuals. The feeling is that the second game of the series improves on what was already great, and it feels rewarding and fun to play. It is another single-player masterpiece from Sony.
