This has the potential to be one of the GOAT racing sims/games, but looks to be swinging in the direction of another game franchise that has sold-out to the games-as-a-service plague. There are time-limited cars where you are only presented with the opportunity to buy at specific points in the game. If you don't have the in-game credits necessary at this moment (which you likely will not), well that's just too bad. . You don't earn nearly enough credits from online and off-line events alike to be able to buy and modify the cars you want, and as of the latest 1.07 update these credit payouts have been reduced substantially. The meta of grinding a certain single player event hundreds of times to be able to afford some expensive in-game purchases develops with an economy like this, which is just mind-numbingly repetitive and boring. The developers may try and defend this game design by saying that the most expensive vehicles *should* take a long time to save up for. But in reality if you're an adult that works a full time job in real life and you can allocate some limited time on your weekends to playing online/singleplayer and accumulating say oh I don't know - 300,000 credits per weekend? ... you're looking at needing to play this game for years and years, decades even to be able to buy all the vehicles in the game. And that's without the price of modifying them considered! You'd probably have to play the game for the rest of your life if you wanted to modify them all too, lol. You cannot sell cars to gain extra credits like previous GT games, and the in-game spinning-wheel prize feature basically always gives you the worst prize out of all shown, bit of a slap in the face. With all that said, why would they design it this way? Oh of course - there's that sneaky little feature of microtransactions; being able to spend real money to get more in-game credits. And that's the direction they're pushing us. Out of principal I won't be spending any money on microtransactions. You should not have to after what you've paid for the game itself. I'll put the game down and move on to some other enjoyable activity to spend my free time on before it comes to that.

And in addition to the above, the game requires a constant internet connection to even play single player mode. When extended server/update issues happen like they have done today, that removes everyone's ability to play the game they've bought offline.

The strong vehicle physics, dynamic weather and time conditions (hopefully they come to all circuits in the game) has the potential to make for some amazing online racing, with tyre, fuel strategies coming into play.

If they fix up the in-game economy of this game it will go from a 5/10 to a 9/10 in my eyes.

The physics and customization are 10/10 though. This is where the game shines, the tracks & cars are pretty much perfectly modeled and the driving itself is quite punishing (in a good way). The game also does a great job on teaching you how to be a better driver.

Overall a massive letdown for a game that was advertised as being the ultimate gran turismo experience. Feels more like a glorified $30 game.

The fact how obvious it is that they are pushing for mirco transactions is sad. To unlock everything, you'll need over 300 million credits, which is 2340 hours by there count. If you consider that you grind 50% and do 50% other stuff, you get 4680 hours. That's 6.4 hours a day, 2 years straight.

The game play is great but the way that PD have gone about trying to force you into microtransactions by buying credit from the play store for a $60+ game is disgusting. The roulette spins expire for no reason and when you use them you either win the lowest prize money or an invitation to buy an expensive car that is normally locked (this invitation also expires). You don't have enough time to save enough money to buy the car that you have an invitation for so this can cause FOMO and some people may buy into the extra credits. You can't sell the cars you don't want/ have duplicates of, this is obviously done so that you are again forced into buying the extra credits. People found ways to earn money quite quick by grinding some races, PD quickly patched them races so they're not worth it now. For some unknown reason the game, even when playing single playing is online only so this 1.07 patch that was botched has now not allowed anyone to play any of the single player campaign for nearly a full day as you need connections to the server. The campaign itself is a little Short and it needs to add a few more endurance races (I know you can set up a custom race but it's not the same). In my opinion I feel as though PD have basically joined the rest of gaming industry with their greed and money first over customers. Like I said the core mechanics that the game developers have worked on are great, the physics feel good and the weather is amazing. It's the bolt ons that they have been done to monitized this game that have killed it. Expand

I reset my PS like 3x before just muted the tv and did it.. With all the default settings ibgot silver no sound just holding the gas and steering.. The cars are beautiful but the crowd and backgrounds, they are hilariously bad unless they are in a cut sean. Licensing tests are brutal and probably the best part.. Every thing from then on focusing on collecting cars with its own xp to a raffle system that's super under welming and its down hill from there. a quest system from the "Cafe" that is what's controlling your way through the game and likewise the reason im probably not going to fully see the game because its just not worth it to grind out lots of these races. Definitely looks like a pay to play model is forming around this game.. Are the races difficult ya is that the result of new advance AI no probably not. A beautiful game spoiled by shady MTX practices. They already made it more of a grind post launch with the latest patch and it was already a grind fest before that. I’m not sure how PD didn’t get called out by all the reviewers but this is just not acceptable for a $80 game.

Rolling single line starts where you start over 40 seconds behind? Yup, it’s needed because the AI isn’t very good. It can be fun but the campaign needs more actual racing with grid starts.

Now tack on the always online requirement and the fact that the game has been unplayable for almost 24 hours…

    Community engagement is non-existent.

It already took much longer than previous GT titles to earn enough credits to pay for many vehicles, but I guess sales of the heavily pushed micro transactions weren’t as high as they’d expected, so they nerfed the reward amounts on the most popularly farmed races in the latest update. Speaking of updates, whenever an update is released, the servers require patching first. This means you can’t play the game because of its “always online” requirement. Yes, you can’t even work on your license tests while the server is down. There’s supposedly some arcade races and the “music rally” tracks, but I never was even given the option to play them as my game refused to go into “offline mode” choosing only to throw up errors about how it couldn’t connect to the server.

    Shame on PlayStation
    Shame on Polyphony Digital
    Shame on Kazunori Yamauchi

Also, the AI sucks, so all the “story mode” races are rolling starts, where you just have to chase down the moronically driven AI car in first place from their 20-35 second head start.

Unfortunately it's bogged down by horrendously predatory microtransactions that absolutely ruin the experience for anyone with a job, a family, or a social life. The grind is borderline unbearable and designed to push people to buy credits with real money. I have no problem with these tactics in a free-to-play game, not in a $70 premium title. This game falls stunningly short of previous installments, even the recent Gran Turismo Sport. GT Sport, at launch, was maligned and panned - over time, GT Sport became a fuller game. Even GT Sport felt like a fuller and more developed game than this. GT Sport had exorbitantly expensive cars but also had an in game economy that worked such that you could work towards expensive cars relatively quickly even as a casual player by just sort of playing the game in way that you found enjoyable. You could sell cars you had purchased and no longer needed (or got a duplicated of as a gift later).

In GT7, there is not really a fully developed campaign/career/solo mode. There wasn't in Sport, either, but PD placated us all by saying that was mostly an online game to tide us all over to a return to form in GT7. GT7 has a markedly more sparse singleplayer gameplay than Sport. This, coupled with extremely low race payout, invitation only cars, and seemingly core gameplay elements of car tuning locked behind raffle tickets screams as a somewhat shameless pivot to a micro-transaction model. That would be fine in a free to play mobile game but is frankly insulting in a AAA studio release of a new installment of what had, to this point, been a core pillar of the entire console's ecosystem. Really disappointing and frustrating. Ultimately going to put this game aside as a casual player - playing a few hours a week without any reasonable way of earning in game credits would lead to six, seven, eight months of time to earn enough credits for a single medium value car of a couple million credits, let alone the top value 20-million credit cars. Extremely frustrating. Unless the game gets both more substantial single-player content AND un-breaks its economy, this will be a forgettable title.

It’s just weird and to me,it feels like a complete gimmick. “I prepared a menu for you” which are 3 races and 3 cars that you will unlock. What menu? What cafe? I turn this game on to race, not to role play . Feels like a Jrpg system with weird dialogues and not everyone is a fan of those, including myself. The café should be an option but they made the whole single player experience revolve around it. The other thing I really don’t like is the lack of qualifying laps before a race..what? Why are there no qualifiers?? You always start dead last which means you’re going to have to beef up your car and trade paint constantly because you have 5 laps to overtake 15 cars. Again,it’s weird. That’s not how racing works in real life and this is supposed to be the real driving simulator right? Makes gran turismo feel like a cross between a sim and an arcade racer. I don’t understand why polyphony decided to take these unnecessary risks when every single fan just wanted a good old fashioned gt game on current gen consoles. I get it,some people are new to it but include these changes as an option instead of turning the whole game inside out. At least they kept the replays thankfully. 7 out of 10 for me. Expand

It is a great building block and keeps me hopeful for GT8 to make improvements but there is a lot left desired here. Once they make changes as promised it will be better but in its current state it is a basic racing game not worth full price in my opinion.

    Pros:
The GT World Map is nice and well setup
Love the return of GT Auto, Used Car Dealership, and Tuning Shop
    Good Mix of Cars
    Cafe is a nice feature
So much car history and information (my favorite feature of this game)

    Cons:
Always online even in single player, which is a bummer
Races are way too easy, Playing on hardest difficulty I have yet to find a challenging event other than License and Missions.
Have to down grade cars constantly in order to create minimal challenge
No Damage. Hit a wall at 200mph no problem spin around once and good to go
Roulette system needs fixed, over 100 tickets opened and almost all have been 5000 credits rewards
Micro Transactions are trash and a ripoff.

The legacy of Gran Turismo is one that’s held close in the hearts of millions of fans across the globe as well as your own. Polyphony Digital as well as Sony’s other first-party studios is held to a different standard in our gaming industry. History has shown that their work leads the way in quality experiences and fair practices in an era where unfortunately the industry heads in the opposite direction. The current state of Gran Turismo 7 is a mixed bag, on one end you have a technical masterclass on what a first-party racing title should be like. While at the same time leaning heavily into the same toxic practices that other infamous studios and publishers have done of heavily monetizing the insides of fully a priced game, as well as making it online only. All the while slashing the in-game economy and rewards to make it incredibly difficult to amass enough credits to fulfill the game's ultimate vision: Collect Cars. The way it’s currently set up is an egregious cash grab, one that feels unlike Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s rich history of quality. We the community wish you would do better to not sink to those low practices of other toxic studios and publishers, and to own up and make changes to the game that will turn its trajectory towards the better.
We want a fair in-game economy that will award us a balanced amount of credits and rewards so we can build our collections.
This as well as taking another look at the online only decision, days like March 17 2022 are a prime example of why this decision will hurt the game in the long run.
As fans of the series and the game we hope you listen and engage with our concerns, we are your community.
The legacy of one of PlayStation's original and iconic series rests always in your hands.

You can't access your garage, any custom vehicles or campaign progression. This is absolutely unacceptable to be barred from the single player campaign. Second major issue is how integrated and pushed microtransactions. Now, you might think it's no big deal if people want to buy credits to fast track vehicle acquisition and upgrades... And, I agree, making it available is fine. But that's NOT the problem. PD is already reducing race payouts to increase the grind, and push microtransactions even more. This is bad for everyone. EVEN those that pay for credits. Instead of buying credits maybe a couple times while playing through, and winning credits along the way, you'll win FAR less now than you would have in previous updates, and might end up shelling out even more money on microtransactions. And, for those who aren't going to pay for credits, they're now forced to grind more than in ANY other GT game. And that's, again, only if they can play at all...

The push to buy credits is frustrating. Really wish it has more cars and tracks, the racing experience is great but that’s it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a first party studio to release something this MTX heavy and then reduce the already too low rewards for people not paying to progress is absolutely shameful. I returned the game today due to these shady practices making the game not fun to play at all. Expand

Online only, 70$ with micro transactions… nuff said
The gameplay is decent but it’s nothing special and there are much better games to play

First time I’ve ever made a meteoritic account. Absolute garbage from Polyphony Digital. Terrible push for micro transactions. Always online single player and 19 hours into server upgrades it’s still completely unplayable. Absolute joke. Absolutely dishonorable.

Micro-transactions for essential content in a game that costs 80 EUR?

Patch 1.07 cutting earnings, making the grind more?

Online required for single-player? You can't play when the servers are down?

Yeah, skip this embarrassment of a game.

Worst gt ever. Microtransation, always online, only ten championship, no endurance, no nascar.

Just an absolute abomination and embarrassing state of modern gaming with the latest release from PD. This game is purely about microtransactions and that is unacceptable. This game is purely about microtransactions and that is unacceptable. Online play online so they can monitor you, super low paying races, super expensive cars and upgrades, a terrible single player campaign mode once you get past the Cafe menus, terrible AI system and the list goes on, all to make you so frustrated enough that you'll just break out your credit card and pay real money for in game credits. As a lifelong GT fan I am extremely disappointed and frustrated with the greed in the gaming industry these days. It needs to stop, don't waste your money on this game like I did! Expand

The series used to be good before they introduced free to play predatory monetization practices in addition to the full price base.

Schemes Include: * Random Roulette wheel with weight towards the lowest value reward. * Invitations to purchase specific cars that expire. * Used car dealerships that sell out of inventory * 12 Million dollar vehicles while the highest races pay 30,000.

Gran Turismo 7 has a lot of good and plenty of great. The use of DualSense and the particularly well-tuned loading is exemplary, and there's a huge amount of work behind the game, with a lot of detail that's almost hard to believe at times. [Issue#318]

Gran Turismo 7 brings to the tracks every single thing fans always wanted: the GT Mode everyone loves, plenty of customization options, car loads, classic scenarios and one of the best DualSense and 3D Audio experiences the PS5 has to offer. This is the best Gran Turismo experience we have ever seen in a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
