What a stupid game. Just press the buttons you see on the screen. No chance to step left or right just move forward the way the game wants. No ability to skip cinimatics. Really do not understand why this bs has so high rating.

Overdone and overstuffed. Excessively excessive. In the previous game I was struck by how often the game would NOT have a combat encounter when you expected it to, and it gave you the space to breathe. Not so much in this game, every moment there is a line of dialogue or an enemy encounter. It is a suffocating experience. Overdone and overstuffed.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Decepcionante...

What a fantastic experience this was. I laughed, I cried, just an absolute roller coaster. I couldn’t recommend this more. Make sure you play God of War 2018 first. I guess you don’t really have to play the other ones, but I would recommend it. There are slight nods during conversations to the older games; but I don’t think it would be game breaking if you hadn’t played them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics and combat are fantastic but its like the developers went out of there way in both games to make Atreus a completly unlikabe character. I recenty replayed Gow 2018 and its fresh why I hated him in that game, his constant smart ass comments and attitude. Its no different here, every section you play as him is a slog and you cant wait for it to be over.

The story is poorly written and the whole "LOKIE" character, the so called champion never does anything but find some mask pieces, that in the end goes no where. Both games would have been better with out him.

Every fight has some room you have to enter and some annoying dialog and if you die on harder difficultys over and over, you have to go through crack again and hear the same dialog over and over. Sections in this game are so annoying it henders replays.

This game is basically The last of us 2, forcing you to play characters and do gameplay that I dont see how anyone thought it would be fun, its padding at best.

The must be better and we dont war is played to death. Tyr is a pointless character, everything hyped from the first game never is fleshed out, there is no deeper meaning to anything in the end kratos does everything, boi finds a mask. This story is terrible and you will really notice how bad everything is on your 2nd play through on higher difficultys, thats when I started to despise the game.

The 10s are just as dumb as the 0s and why I am giving it a 5 instead of the 7 it deserves

God of War Ragnarok: A Disappointing Sequel
The highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed God of War game has finally arrived, and unfortunately, it falls short of expectations. While the game boasts impressive graphics and an epic story, its lackluster gameplay and repetitive combat mechanics make it a frustrating experience for players.

One of the major issues with God of War Ragnarok is its pacing. The game takes far too long to get going, and the slow buildup of the story and character development feels tedious. When the action finally picks up, it's often interrupted by lengthy cutscenes that detract from the immersion.

The combat system, while flashy, lacks depth and variety. Players are often forced to rely on the same few moves and button combinations to dispatch enemies, leading to a repetitive and dull experience. Additionally, the game's difficulty spikes are inconsistent and can be frustratingly unfair.

Another issue is the lack of innovation in the game. While God of War Ragnarok introduces some new mechanics, such as exploration and puzzle-solving elements, they feel tacked-on and underdeveloped. The game also fails to address some of the criticisms of its predecessor, such as the lack of boss variety and a meaningful progression system.

Overall, God of War Ragnarok is a disappointing sequel that fails to live up to its predecessor. While it has some redeeming qualities, such as its stunning visuals and epic story, its lackluster gameplay and underdeveloped mechanics make it a lackluster experience for fans of the series.

The combat is a step up compared to 2018, especially with the third weapon you get. Plenty of dialogue between characters made me laugh. Actor performances are mostly solid, and the music is grand. Graphics are exactly the same as 2018, and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Unfortunately, this game suffers from lackluster writing. Many moments drag on too long, while others move much too

Unfortunately, this game suffers from lackluster writing. Many moments drag on too long, while others move much too fast. 2018 had about 10 total characters present, while this one throws another 30 or so at you and doesn't give you much time to get connected to them or be invested in them. Many characters sound out of place from this world and speak with modern mannerisms that break the immersion and make you feel like you're watching a Marvel movie.
Another big issue is the overall gameplay. The combat is great but not as great as in the Greek era. The traversal mostly has you slowly climbing up walls or crawling through tunnels as a way to hide a loading gate and have the PS4 stop processing one area and start processing the next. The puzzles are decent until your companions open their mouths and can't stop telling you exactly what to do and there is no option to turn them off. There are TONS of cutscenes in this one, and they feel more dramatic than they need to be, almost like the writers are begging you to feel the same emotion as the characters in these moments. This could have worked if the writing was tighter and more meaningful, but they decided to go with overemotional acting and sweeping music to try and make these scenes bigger than they really are. It's one of the cheapest tricks you can pull when making a movie. Maybe that's the core root of this game; it feels like an Avengers movie more than a God of War game.
In summary, they are stepping too far away from what made God of War unique and special back in the 2000s, and instead, they are copying trends from other successful games to try and appeal to a broader audience and make more sales. You could sum up this game with single words like "vanilla", "bland", and "unoriginal."
I don't care what happens to the franchise after this because at this point I'm done. I'm going to subscribe to PS Plus Premium so I can play the older games and reminisce how great God of War once was.
Edit: After playing God of War 1-3 and Ascension and then trying Ragnarok again, the tone of Ragnarok is unbearable with how many characters are goofy and crack jokes. It's in stark contrast to the tone they are trying to establish in the story with violence and death, and it's disgustingly jarring.
The story ended at 3 with Kratos killing himself to give hope to others. The Norse games are not canon.

I liked God Of War (2018), but this game feels like a step back. It plays too secure, with almost no innovation with respect to the 2018 game. The entertaining combat from the first next gen installment returns and goes deeper, as does the exceptional cinematic feel. The entertaining combat from the first next gen installment returns and goes deeper, as does the exceptional cinematic feel. To date I'm not sure I've ever played a game that has felt as much like a movie as these two. The single shot camera following without ever cutting has a lot to do with that, as does the character design and exploration.

Unfortunately said character exploration here, and the greater story at large, is frequently and on the whole awful. This is perhaps as textbook a case as I can think of of plot leading the characters, wherein the characters frequently make absurd and frustrating decisions simply to move the gameplay from one phase to the next. The central plot all told is fairly meaningless and difficult to believe from basically anyone's standpoint except Odin, but that too broke down when interacting w/ the rest of the gang. I frequently found myself shaking my head in disbelief and just waiting to move on hoping the story would get better, but it only got worse. The dialogue is also stilted and very poorly paced with long, long pauses in between lines for no apparent reason.

The climax is rather anti-climactic, and the final stage feels rushed and not to the scale of epicness the series has often drawn in the past. The level design is also pretty drab and repetitive, such that it doesn't really seem all that rewarding to explore some of the hidden areas, and most of what you're doing is just plugging along in the obvious direction you're being pushed.

These elements would probably not feel as bad if it weren't for the aforementioned cinematic quality the game does so well, but if you're going to make it feel like a movie, the story and design need to hold to such standards, and this does not (at least not a good one).

But it's still fun because of the great combat, and some intermediate moments of pathos for our heros. I'm not particularly eager for the spin-off they seem to setup, but maybe they can improve the story enough to make that more engaging.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I may be a complete idiot but I found the exploration a lot more confusing this time around. A spent hours upon hours running around in areas because the map/compass mislead me constantly. It took me out of the game at points and forced me to resort to tutorials on "how to get to X place/complete this quest".

I always vowed to never look anything up unless I absolutely had to, unfortunately I did that more than I'd like to admit.

I also found Atreus/Loki's sections mid-game rather tedious, especially his time in the woods. I wanted that to end after a while. I would knock my score down to an 8.5 if I could but that's down to how I played the game. Ending my previous session at the perfect time and coming back to over an hour of wondering through the woods with Atreus completely threw me off.

Other than that though, the game itself is wonderful, the story is near immaculate and it's a perfect continutation to 2018's God of War. If you''ve played God of War, you'd be an absolute fool to not play this. There's no need to force any innovation when they absolutely knocked it out the park in 2018. Uncharted remained the same for 5 games, God of War can do the same.

The negative reviews are outrageous here, "outdated combat", "a reskin", "didn't live up to my expectations" etc. This game easily lives up to mine and I'm sure if you go into this game with the intention of enjoying it, you will. It's at worst a 7 and at best an 11.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll try my best to not use spoilers for this review

This game broke me, it had everything to be the best God of war ever, but the developers couldn’t use the great potential this game had… It feels like Cory couldn’t finish what he started, so he gave the job to someone that had different ideas for the story and he made it the worst way as possible in almost everything in story and gameplay. What makes the story a disaster is that the writers and Cory had the stupid idea to make it a 2x1 game, so the narrative feels rushed after the first two hours of the game, also the fact that many characters don’t feel well written at all (Atreus tries to look clever, but every decision he makes is none sense, Freyr is literally a MCU character with unfunny jokes, Odin had a pointless item and Thor is “justified” for being a serial killer and a terrible father as it was said in the last game) and that there’s no clear objective since the beginning, it’s a very complex and anticlimactic story. The gameplay (which should be the most important part of the GAME) has two things that make it good, which are the combat system that’s very enjoyable and most of the enemies and bosses you fight, but the rest of the things have zero innovation, which makes the DLC argument still valid. I think that the biggest flaw about the gameplay is that Santa Monica focused a lot on the story, so you’ll have too many long cutscenes and walking simulators… I won’t talk that much about the soundtrack and artistic direction because they aren’t the main focus, but if I had to say something about it, both are gorgeous (mostly the soundtrack)!

Ragnarok is a wholly disappointing sequel to the triumph that was God of War 2018, a game that was, to me, greater than the sum of its parts. Ragnarok is EXACTLY the sum of its parts, lacking the charm and writing polish that set the previous entry apart. The gameplay has not been expanded in any meaningful way and, in some regards, has regressed back to more "video-gamey" systems. ARagnarok is a wholly disappointing sequel to the triumph that was God of War 2018, a game that was, to me, greater than the sum of its parts. Ragnarok is EXACTLY the sum of its parts, lacking the charm and writing polish that set the previous entry apart. The gameplay has not been expanded in any meaningful way and, in some regards, has regressed back to more "video-gamey" systems. A visual feast, this game is; a meaningful, complete experience it is not. It suffers under the weight of its uninteresting narrative, resulting in a clunky, slow, meandering game with a dull payoff.

The phrase "it feels like a Marvel movie" has been thrown around by some detractors, and perhaps rightfully so; this game is so Disney-fied that it barely feels like a God of War game, even less one made by the same studio as 2018's entry. Cory Barlog said something along the lines of 'I don't want my team nor myself to be working on another GoW game for the next 15 years,' and I don't think that's an unreasonable idea. The problem is that so much stuff got scrapped in order to keep this game within the ideal AAA length, and it shows. Plot points, characters, and artifacts lead to nowhere. There's always someone or something new to talk to or find, but rarely are the reasons why expanded upon.

At the end of all this is a game full of ideas that are never resolved. The mid-game feels like filler, its connection to the main plot unclear and its consequences even less clear. Most of the game is spent cleaning up other people's messes as Kratos randomly decides to become the World's Best Dad and neighbor to all. This makes him a reactive protagonist and makes the game boring in turn, as most of your time is now spent waiting for something bad to happen so Kratos can step in and fix it.

Ragnarok showed its hand too early and, oh boy, was it a weak one. The gimmick fight against Thor failed to recapture the magic that was the Baldur fight from 2018. Cut back to the cabin and here's Odin, the All-Father, the king of Asgard, talking like he's in an episode of Seinfeld. His goal is to stop Ragnarok, something he's desperately trying to figure out (supposedly), yet every appearance shows him frolicking around as if there's nothing wrong. This seems to be a common theme, actually, as every character seems to feel no sense of urgency. There wouldn't even be a game here if Kratos wasn't so prideful in the first hour; him and Odin have the same goal and, by the end of the game, Kratos has evolved into someone who actively wants peace, so... why even deny Odin's truce in the first place? The story stumbles through the realms, eventually limping to a dull, unsatisfying conclusion.

The discrepancies throughout this game's story make my head hurt, but these aren't just limited to the narrative. The gameplay and level design have taken massive hits, especially the latter; the sprawling landscapes dotted with colossal set pieces found in the first game have been scrapped in favor of narrow hallways and one-way streets littered with "puzzles." These "puzzles" are never difficult but are so great in number that they quickly became tedious. I never thought I would be complaining about roadblocks in video games but man, I miss the dynamic puzzles from the first game. At least they were a little more complex.

The skill trees are unnecessary for two reasons: one is that you get so much XP so quickly that you never need to worry about unlocking skills; the second is that these skills are so ineffective that you're better off without them. The skills in the first game had real responses in-game, like the stance-changing R1 attack doing more posture damage, rewarding the risk you had to take just to activate it. In this game, enemies can walk off a stagger as long as there's another animation in their attack cycle. The parry windows are never consistent and, even if you do pull off a perfect parry, there's no guarantee that the riposte will hit- and that's EVEN IF the enemy gets staggered at all. There's no dueling or back-and-forth combat, just passive waiting until you can punish a lucky stagger or shield bash.

God of War: Ragnarok feels like a visual novel. My button inputs mean very little because the story is more important. But... the story is boring. I'm not invested in something where all the cool stuff happens in cutscenes where control has been taken away from me. The major boss battles ARE cutscenes; they take no skill to beat, instead you just whittle away their health bar until you get to the next cutscene where Kratos does something cooler than you could ever hope to achieve in real combat.

This game was so badly mishandled that I'm not even excited for the next game by SSM. I don't think Ragnarok is a bad game, but it's a bad God of War game. Unfortunately, we may never know just how good this game could have been. In appealing to the lowest common denominator, this game became bland and soulless. What a shame.

With great enemy variety and super diverse combat options even from the start, it felt even more fun to hack n slash monsters than in the original God of War (2018).

The great cast of characters was a lot more fleshed out, involving them in different parts of the story, usually as team ups with varied combinations. This ended up being a fantastic idea in order to give each of them a lot of time interacting with each other and expressing their feelings or telling their stories, also further developing different relationships.

Atreus was more mature and had a lot more to say in this one, he was no longer either a docile punching bag or a bratty rebel, Kratos himself grew a lot as well.

The set pieces were spectacular and I've also enjoyed the enemy design a lot more, especially in terms of the bigger opponents, it felt like I could interact with them consistently and they were a lot more visible and transparent with their attacks.

The acting performances were also amazing, I could really feel the emotion coming out of them during dramatic moments as well as being charmed or otherwise amused at the more comical scenes.

If I had any criticism it would be with the way some fights are designed... in the sense that sometimes there seems to be a philosophy of "throw as much stuff at Kratos as possible in order to increase difficulty", which, combined with the enemies being able to instantly jump backwards on the opposite end of the entire arena and multiple enemies surrounding you or throwing moving balls of fire at you, it turns into a fiesta where you have to track a million things at once with a relatively limiting camera.

Nice visuals and excellent performance on PS5. Market leading voice acting and animation. Some very enjoyable character interactions. Cons
    Repetitive and unsatisfying combat.
Linear levels with no flexibility on how to traverse or solve the numerous samey puzzles.
Atreus is charmless and also much less fun to play as than Kratos.
Totally lost interest in the story. Just not for me, although I did enjoy the first (2018) game.

Might retry in some months or years.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
