GoW 2018 is a masterpiece, while GoW Ragnarok is a game. If the writing and the acting were not so great, this game would have been a 2 or 3.

    1. I don't why, but the developers insist on enemies surrounding you all the time. Even if you run to a spot to face them at a perfect angle, the enemies will find their way to go to your other sides, and this is not the case for Gow2018. Making things worse, they butchered quick turn, you can press D-Down to quick turn ONLY when you are blocking, which MAKES ABSOLUTELY **** NO SENSE.
    2. Parry was satisfying in 2018, but not here, it's weak as hell. Enemies seem harder to stagger.
    3. If you want the witch time? Well they **** bind it to one set of armor and the time is reduced. They nerfed the combat in every **** possible way.
    4. Almost forgot to mention that they hard-nerfed the rune attacks, they are laughably bad now, not worth abusing anymore. Just pick the ones with the shortest cooldown, at least you can stagger mobs. For damage? Don't even bother.
    5. Do you remember the developers boasting about their "evolution" by which they mean you can cancel any attacks in GOW2018, even the rune attacks? Well well, guess who walked that back? You can't anymore.

The default difficulty will have anyone breezing through every scenario without a single death. The harder difficulties increase enemy health a ludicrous amount, while ensuring that the offscreen projectile spam stops every combo (thanks to an insane lack of any dodge offset type of feature). The camera is atrocious and will neuter your characters movement when trying to switch targets. No replay value whatsoever due to long un-skippable talking and walking scenes. The single-camera presentation is ruined by an insane amount of menu usage all in the service of terrible RPG elements that hardly influence the combat.

The writing in this game is just as bad. No subtlety, every character says exactly how they feel. All plot points involve a MacGuffin, just like the last game. The vast majority of character conflicts come from a contrived lack of communication. Many of the character beats are poorly motivated as well. The story tries to explore themes of family and fate, but nothing new is said. Being an abusive person is bad. Letting other people decide your fate is bad. In gameplay, the characters yell the solution to every puzzle before giving the player a chance to observe the puzzle's elements. While in combat, the side characters constantly yell to use a shield strike to stun enemies. Any sense of immersion the game is trying to build is destroyed as soon as the player takes control.

There are also game-breaking bugs littered throughout. I feel like I have been tricked by both reviewers and developers into buying this game.

A really good game that couldn't completely keep up with its predecessor. The visuals are stunning, the story is cool, fighting is fun (the same as in GoW 2018 - but no need to change a running system!), but the pacing feels so off in this one. You jump from one uneccesary endeavor too the next and some parts just feel much to stretched. Still had a good time playing the game!

Just waste of time. The only good thing might be graphics but not better than horizon forbidden west. Generally map feels so small and skintight. Combats are routine and pointless. It’s like they’ve just made it for story, not for innovation. It could have been a dlc maybe.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. God of War Ragnarok is the culmination of Kratos and Atreus’s story and a compelling redemption of the once vengeful god of war.

Before diving into details, I must say that I started playing the franchise when it started in 2005. I got excited with every new released and I played all the original 6 games in 3 consoles (ps2, psp and ps3). Just yesterday I beat, again, god of war chains of Olympus. While the other games were simple and fun, they often tried to redeem Kratos. In every game of the old franchise Kratos tries to get rid of his past and, somehow, pay for his sins. However, the Greek goods continue to screw him over, which leads to the events of god of war 3, when the Greek world ends. In that sense, there was no path of redemption for Kratos without the destruction of Olympus, given that corruption of the Olympian gods knew no bounds.

    ——————- Story
Compared to 2018, Ragbarok’s story feels much less focused and, at times, I felt like the game didn’t know where they wanted to go. With 2018, there was a clear goal, that was, to reach the highest peak in all the realms. But in Ragnarok too many stories he thrown at you and it did felt a little forced at times. However, it was necessary given the expansion that the underlying Ragnarok event was going to bring. That being said, I loved Loki’s solos as they provided a fresh outlook for this long Kratoscentric franchise.I also loved how those Atreus’s solos helped us see within the lines of the enemies and their motives, without breaking the one-shot camera that follows from start to credits.

In addition, this game took a more rpg approach for its storytelling by dividing the game into smaller quest sessions, where you could focus on a single character at time. For example, we have Freya’s arc, Brok’s and so on. The amazing storytelling by Sony Santa Monica really makes you feel like those characters are real and makes you genuinely care for them. Finally, I loved how the story finally goes back to Kratos and Atreus about 2/3rds of the game and then the story goes back to its main track. The emotional hit of having Atreus back reminded a lot of my own relationships and felt personal, real, raw… while I enjoyed being introduced to so many new, interesting characters, I missed having Atreus as a companion and his comeback felt so natural and well written. “Don’t be sorry father, better” Atreus said and that made me laugh and tear a little bit.

Finally, the ending was just what an expected from an epic final battle but I do understand that some people wanted something even more epic. However, I also understand that the epicness of ragnarok is a background to the real story: and it goes deep, not outwards. If you couldn’t catch that, then this game was not for you. That being said, I was still happily surprised by the final plot twis and last bosses. The Valakiries this time were better than ever and stage for that fight was one of the best I’ve seen in gaming history. Thor’s and Odin’s fights were what I was expecting, but good enough still.

Now the last arcs of this game caught me off guard several times. For once, I truly thought that Kratos would die at the end. Second Brok’s death was not expected and that shook me so much. Odin’s desguie as well. But what shook me THE MOST was to see Atreus goodbye. I was not expecting him to leave us. It made me cherish him even more as a companion and character… And finally, to top it all off, while still recovering from Atreus’s goodbye “punch”, when Kratos saw the mural with his story (likely told by Fey), I crumbled. Kratos finally found a path of redemption. And if you played the other games carefully, that was what Kratos had been trying to do since the original god of war in 2005. In every game Kratos is trying to find redemption and having played all the games since I was kid and now, almost 20 years later he is able to find it, it makes me really happy to see all the character development that the Santa Monica team was able to put forward to make a ruthless, vengeful god who killed his own family, find such a compelling redemption that didn’t feel pushed on us at all.

—— unfortunately I don’t have enough characters to type the other parts of the game, but let me just say that I also loved the combat and graphics and especially side quests, as they were usually all related to the main story or characters.

The norse charecters and its mythology are not incorporated well at all. Feels like normal people tv drama show. You do not feel like god or that you are in a universe that gods exists. It sure is beutiful and graphics and the delivery is absolutely top notch.

But dear god this game is so long just to finish the main campaign and even that was really hard. So much dialogue, walking, climbing repeated enemies. It just dragged on and on without any meaningful reasons. Not to mantioned all the side content that has bloated this game beyong belief.

Gameplay can defenitly be satisfying but the rpg loot/stats systems assosiated with gameplay doesnt do anything except waste players time to make game longer. So much handholding with the traversal. You cant freely grapple or jump. Everything is on rails.

I may have bought this game and santa monica.sony may think they already have sales. But if developers dont provide what consumers demand they will not get sales from thier next game. Rpg mechaniches are the worst things thats happened to games industry in my opinion. Shallow way to get you to be addicted.

This has to be part of the reason why I was pretty disappointed when the game was released. The game I envisioned and the game that came out were two very different things, in gameplay and narrative. I completed the game in two sittings, which I entirely expected to. The first section of the narrative was everything I dreamed of, a clash I had waited years for, seeing characters only ever mentioned in the first game. That is why I was so disappointed when it came to the rest of the game. I entirely expected this to be the second entry in a trilogy of games, but it feels like they kneecapped their narrative with a rushed ending that felt entirely unearned, at least to me. I really wanted this game to be a 10/10, but personally, it let me down. Just not the game or narrative for me. Expand

That being said though, I do have a gripe with the game and that's the map design. During the story they are great, but since I'm also a trophy hunter I finished the story first and went back for the collectibles later ad some of the maps, especially parts of Alfheim and most of Vanaheim are a nighmare to traverse without a pointer. Might be just me, but that was the big annoyance factor for me, the rest was great and if you're looking for a game to spend somewhere between let's say 15 and 50 hours, depending on how much you want to do, this is a basically a no brainer.
It's strongly recommanded to finish God of War (2018) first, but it's probably possible to just enjoy this game on its own if you so choose. Why you'd do something if the "first" game is right there and great too, I don't know, but I gues it's possible.

Ragnarok is a disappointing sequel that fails to capture the magic of its predecessor. The story feels rushed and lacks depth, leaving players unsatisfied. The combat, once exhilarating, now feels repetitive and uninspired. Overall, it's a lackluster addition to the God of War franchise.

As someone who has been playing God of war since the first one in 2005, I have found enjoyment in every entry. 2018 was a bit divisive for some people, but with ragnorok a lot of that has been improved.
There's more enemy and boss types and the combat feels faster and tighter then the previous entry. This game a little more brutal and violent then 2018, but never quite hits the level of the Greek saga. There's a difference between violence and blood/gore. Miniboss kills fall back on "snapping its neck" way to often, which is brutal and violent but not bloody or gory. Sure there are more decapitations and dismemberment in this game, but when you decapitate a huge monster there is a surprising lack of blood. Something I'm sure could have been fixed.
I honestly blame this on the scope of the game. First from a mechanics perspective, shifting the series from strictly linear, to a more open experience takes a lot resources.(Wouldn't quite call this game open world but it does have bigger areas and several branches to explore). Another aspect that resource management effects is the set piece moments. I don't want to spoil anything but there are a few memorable events like this is the game, but there were also moments where this should have been more focused on. Events happen that should have been highlighted as these amazing cinematic moments, but instead take the backseat. Another factor shifted by resource management
And second the fact that this was originally going to be a trilogy. There was a lot they had to accomplish in this game. Which effects the pacing a little bit. Gameplay wise, you have these character driven segments that are essentially flooded with fight after fight. As if you will forget that its an action game, if they don't constantly remind you. Don't get me wrong its an action game and the action is very well done, but sometimes the in-between fights felt tacked on, filler if you will. Even when you have story wise combat heavy moments, their seems to always be one or two filler fights.
Now on to the story, the story is good, but its also effected by originally being a trilogy and the pacing is little off because of it. There were a couple of times where something or some moment could have been fleshed out more. but it still hits everything it needs to. And the way they've positioned this game i can't really tell where the split would have been. But it indubitably would have been more fleshed out. And maybe even had more cinematic set pieces. This does give it a slight rushed feeling but not much.
At this point you may be thinking that i didn't enjoy this game much. But quite the contrary. I only focused on giving a detailed and honest review. Its not perfect but its still one hell of a ride and very enjoyable. I had a lot of fun and look forward to the next entry in the series.

Bonus points: I loved how now that its not some big secret Kratos goes into his history a bit more in this one which was a nice touch for a series veteran

the leviathen axe and blades of chaos are better then ever. the Draupnir spear exceeded my expectations. once i got it i thought i would never use it but that wasn't the case i used it a lot during my playthrough. Each weapon has its use the axe being the strongest but slow. the blades being fast and good for clearing multiple enemy's. the spear being fast but not the strongest but the projectiles are very powerful. The story is amazing i do wish the ragnarok battle at the end was longer and took its time but still its amazing. Boss battles are great and get me pumped up. i love the heimdall and odin and both the thor fights. But here's my biggest con Aterus. I didn't hate his parts but they weren't great. You cannot level up in like kratos so when i played New game + Enemy's were stronger but not Aterus. So i died lots of time from One shots So Basically i had to not get hit during battles. Ironwood Isn't Terrible but it is the worst part of the game. Very few battles LOTS of cutscenes. But nonetheless This game is amazing The transformation Of midgard Is great And they didn't reuse the same map and just put snow on it. They basically made it brand new. 10/10 A amazing game

The game is disappointing, with a very poor storyline and characters making frustratingly dumb decisions. Not to mention, there's a section that is tedious to play, involving senseless tasks unrelated to the plot. God of War Ragnarok is a good game, but like GoW 2018 is NOT a perfect game and is unfortunately criminally overrated. As much as that fact angers Sony blowhards and paid critics, God of War Ragnarok is a decent game with both strengths and weaknesses. As a first party Sony exclusive, the graphics are fantastic on PS5, with both graphics and performance modes looking great. The writing also sees improvement from the first game, with witty dialogue getting a chuckle from me every now and then. However, just as the first game, the puzzles are monotonous and repetitive with very little variety beyond "freeze the water" or "throw the axe" . As far as the combat goes, nothing has changed since the first game. The combat is just as convoluted, with far too many forgettable skills, runes, etc. The locked camera is still asinine and is incredibly aggravating when I'm trying to pick up a health-stone and I have to fight the camera to let me pick it up. There is also incredibly inconsistent difficulty, why are the regular enemies able to deliver boss level attacks that take half my health? It gets to the point where I've died more to an enemy hoard than to the actual bosses, especially since there can be 3-4 enemies attacking you at once. The bosses have improved from the first game, with more variety, however, who needs bosses when one regular enemy can kill you in two hits. The story has improved since the first game, with a special attention to the characters, however, most of the Atreus sections feel like filler, especially the berry picking mission. This game feels like it's been stretched thin to fill an arbitrary 30 hour campaign length. Overall, God of War Ragnarok is a good game, but nowhere near the heights of a 10/10 game that paid game critics and Sony blowhards would say it is. Expand

Building upon the successful foundation of its predecessor, the combat in Ragnarok is more fluid, diverse, and challenging. Kratos' Leviathan Axe and Atreus' bow have been further fine-tuned, making each strike and shot feel satisfyingly impactful. The variety of moves, combos, and abilities available to Kratos are expanded, allowing players to develop their own combat style.

Additionally, the introduction of new weapons and abilities, acquired throughout the journey, adds depth to the combat system. From powerful elemental gauntlets to devastating runic attacks, players have a broader arsenal at their disposal. This variety encourages experimentation and caters to different playstyles, making battles engaging and rewarding.

God of War Ragnarok also introduces thrilling boss encounters, each uniquely designed and challenging in their own right. These epic battles test the player's skills and strategic thinking, requiring more than just brute force to overcome. The satisfaction of triumphing over formidable foes is unparalleled, and these moments are among the game's highlights.

On the other hand, the narrative in God of War Ragnarok feels overcrowded and lacks the focused storytelling that made the 2018 installment so captivating. While the first game followed a simple yet powerful father-son journey, Ragnarok attempts to weave a complex tale involving various Norse gods, realms, and conflicts. As a result, the plot feels rushed, and some storylines are underdeveloped.

The emotional depth and character development, which were the heart of the 2018 game, take a backseat in Ragnarok. The relationship between Kratos and Atreus feels somewhat neglected, as the narrative jumps from one event to another, leaving little room for meaningful interactions between the two. This lack of emotional connection diminishes the impact of pivotal moments, making them feel less significant than they should.

Furthermore, the inclusion of multiple story arcs and side quests introduces an abundance of characters and lore, often overwhelming the player. While it's exciting to explore the vastness of Norse mythology, it comes at the cost of a tightly-knit narrative. The side quests, while adding to the game's longevity, can feel distracting and dilute the main story's focus.

God of War (2018) was celebrated for its character-driven narrative and emotional resonance, but Ragnarok struggles to maintain the same level of depth and intimacy. The pacing suffers as a result, leaving players with little time to process events and connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Another aspect that takes away from the narrative experience is the open-world nature of Ragnarok. While the idea of exploring the realms and discovering hidden secrets is enticing, it can feel like a departure from the linear, cinematic experience of the previous game. The world of Ragnarok is vast, and the sheer amount of content can sometimes be overwhelming, taking away from the more focused storytelling that made its predecessor memorable.

In conclusion, God of War Ragnarok successfully refines the combat mechanics that made its predecessor a triumph. The fluidity, diversity, and challenge of the combat system elevate the gameplay to new heights, making battles exhilarating and satisfying. However, the narrative of Ragnarok feels rushed and overloaded, with too much going on compared to the simplicity and emotional depth of God of War (2018).

The ambitious attempt to incorporate multiple story arcs and side quests in an open-world setting sacrifices the focused storytelling and character-driven experience that defined the 2018 game. While God of War Ragnarok remains an enjoyable and visually stunning experience, it falls short of capturing the same emotional resonance that its predecessor achieved with a more straightforward, powerful narrative. Nevertheless, fans of the franchise and those interested in Norse mythology will still find much to appreciate in this epic adventure.

The portrayal of Odin and some of the other gods is just bizarre. I can see it being funny to have Richard Schiff as Odin in a meta comedy kind of story, but it doesn’t work in this melodrama, and lends to the anticlimax of the ending. The combat doesn’t make up for it; low stakes, it doesn’t get better, you don’t get big schools of mobs like in old school gow. When you’re underleveled, you do endless chip damage but dodge constantly to avoid dying in 3 hits ; it’s very uninspiring. The mobs are harder than the bosses, and the bosses are worse than in the prior game, which looks worse in retrospect. it is beautiful and has some good missions, and i think the basic combat system is decent and could have been used in a better game, but it’s possibly the worst PS exclusive, including Days Gone. God of War Ragnarök does an excellent job at portraying Kratos' growth as a character. He has clearly outgrown being anyone's pawn of destruction and the all the decisions he makes are his own. The game doesn't glorify war in the slightest, the final fight showdown explifies the reality of war, multiple battles beyond one's own perspective and the grim nature of the war (odds stacked against us) was handled superbly.
