    I'll be honest, I walked into this game unenthusiastically and expecting the worst as this was not the Final Fantasy I knew, and more importantly, it wasn't FF7 Rebirth, which I was more excited for at the time of FF16's release. But being about half-way through the game, all I can say is: I was wrong. It is different, but it took me by storm and I'm enjoying this a lot more than I wasI'll be honest, I walked into this game unenthusiastically and expecting the worst as this was not the Final Fantasy I knew, and more importantly, it wasn't FF7 Rebirth, which I was more excited for at the time of FF16's release. But being about half-way through the game, all I can say is: I was wrong. It is different, but it took me by storm and I'm enjoying this a lot more than I was thinking I would. If I had to describe the game, FF16 is what you'd get if you asked the writer of Game of Thrones to come up with a story for a Final Fantasy game, and then asked the developers of the Witcher 3 to help make the game. But while it is very similar to the Witcher, the combat is far more polished and engaging. I also love how the title is more adult oriented, not shying away from sexual themes, violence and coarse language.

    Everything is extremely high detail, getting close to walls and surfaces reveal a ton of detail and it's mind boggling seeing how much of it is often on display in the same area. The lighting & shadows is some of the best I've seen in any game. And some of the forests in the game look basically photorealistic. Loading times is also very fast. I feel like this is the first truly next-gen title, offering similar visual quality to Demon's Souls, but done at a much larger scale with huge open environments and tons of detail in every direction. It's extremely impressive.

    The characters are really interesting and the story complex and nuanced, I'd be surprised if it doesn't grip you from the start. All of this is beautifully presented through cut-scenes that look like something straight from a Hollywood CG film. The acting, both visual and vocal is perfect, and of course, it's a Final Fantasy game, so the music is on point as well.

    The only real negative for me is the uninteresting side-quests. These are as boring as they get, but I do feel the main story makes up for that in spades, so I can't really fault the title for it. I know some people have complained about the game's performance, but this hasn't been a problem for me personally. During combat the game seems to lock to 60 fps in performance mode and that's really where I need the performance to be good. During the slower exploration bits, the game runs at a higher quality which drops the frame rate below 60, but I never felt like it negatively impacted the experience for me.

    Overall, I'm glad Square-Enix took their time with the game, it's clear that a ridiculous amount of polish went into it. If anything drastically reduces my enjoyment in the late game I'll update my review accordingly, but so far very happy with everything the game offers.    … Expand

    I love this game!! I like the story and the world in this game May be addicted to some performance issues. I hope the team can fix it soon.

    Painfully mediocre, the Eikon battles are cool and the first half of the game has an interesting story, but then it just completely falls off with the introduction of the final villain.

    Incredible action, emotionally driven story that doesn't need to be super deep. The Medieval setting is fantastic. They do a wonderful job at pulling at your heart strings, making you care about the NPCs you meet during your journey. It's not a play safe happy story. Its filled with blood, death, consequences, and really makes you despise the antagonists.     I REALLY love how they used Aions in this. Instead of summoning for help, you BECOME them, and get to have Glorious Giant Kaiju Battles. Ifrit really comes off as a giant, fire breathing monster of destruction. If you like world building, lore, character development and really feeling like you're part of this world you'll love this game. Side quests might seem irrelevant, but many are you getting to know more about the people, the world, and learning the knowledge of the games history.    … Expand

    Probably the best Final Fantasy ever made. The gameplay is amazing, the story is extremely compelling and the music is extremely beautiful. Yoshi-P and his team pulled off and amazing feat. :)

    Great game overall. Didn't like the story much at the end but it pretty much feels like final fantasy. Other than that i had no bugs encouter but few framrate dips.. not game breaking tho. I would say wait until price drop. Don't feel like it's worth $70 somehow. Finally I wish they made the story at least more compelling by making it longer..     At first I was worried about the combat system but, I am very pleased with what they have done with this. The narrative is awesome and to me the characters seem very well written so far. I am very excited to continue playing through the story.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Can't say I'm a die hard final fantasy fan, but I've enjoyed playing 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13-1 and 15. This comes 2nd for me after 7/remake. The story and sense of adventure and progression is awesome and well thought out. The OST is amazing, really gets me in the feels most times. The COMBAT! I'm having a hard time deciding where I place this in ranking compared to ff7 remake. I love the DMC influence and speed of combat, just feel sooo powerful, but I love ff7 remake's tactical real time combat. But yh, this game I'd really give a 9.5 ( the 0.5 being my love for the overworld and airships etc from FF of old, the lack of isn't a game breaker though) I love it.… Expand

    Easily the best Final Fantasy in a long while. The game really shines during the huge boss battles. I haven't seen gameplay and scope this impressive since God of War 3. The story, visuals, gameplay and music are all beyond anything seen this gen. The game really is impressive.

    One of the best Final Fantasy games to-date, the combat is engaging, world exploration is fun and all the side quests are filled with great story. The game has a ton of FF14 references to enjoy as well as a darker tone to it’s grand adventure. 10/10 Final Fantasy experience.

Everything is almost perfect, the characters are really likeable; every character has his own personality, background and desires/ambitions. There’s even characters you’ll like from the first scene.     The gameplay is quite good, excellent actually.
    Every character has its own abilities and way of fight, the abilities of the protagonist (Clive) and how every ability is totally different and unique is perfect. The combos you can do and the abilities you can use combined is pleasing.

    La gente ya no sabe apreciar el esfuerzo de una compañía por hacer un buen juego, y a todo le quiere hacer review bombing , el juego tiene excelentes gráficas, un divertido modo de pelea y si las misiones secundarias son sosas pero bueno, los juegos no son perfectos, me queda claro que este juego lo amas o lo odias , aun así creo que cumple con su cometido por que es controversial...

    Best Final Fantasy since almost two decades.
    The story is fascinating. I love the combat system.
    And I find the design of the world very well done.
    I don't notice the 30 FPS in graphics mode at all, unlike in other games.

    I will start by saying this game is not a perfect game. However, after the sadness of ff15 this is a phenomenal come back. There are performance issues and the battle system could be better, but where has a story this immersive and memorable ever shown up in a game.     Combat is very fun and you can customize gear, eikons and abilities quite a lot for various combinations and story is great so far, would highly recommend playing the demo first before buying the main game. Overall great game.

    Very good story and combat system. Most characters are really well written. Also a beuatifully faithful medieval European setting with the appropriate diversity of the different indigenous European populations.

    It's easy to see how marvelous this game is the moment you get to the title screen. 25 hours in and I've enjoyed every single second. It's also the first time in any game I've ever utilized Photo Mode. Truly a technical marvel. No serious complaints whatsoever.

    It's as epic as the series ever has gotten in ages! The music is absolutely incredible, followed by equally exhilarating fast-paced action combat, all tied up by an extensive lore, beautiful and breathtaking cutscenes and a gripping story! Again, the dualsense controller haptics implementation is masterfully done. All in all, it is a MUST BUY PS5 GAME!

    I'm currently starting a New Game+ after finishing the game the first time around and already I think this is at least the best FF since FF10. Epic, amazing visuals, sublime combat and compelling story.

    I really was hesitant about playing this game at first. I’m glad I was wrong. I really am more about the old style of FF but honestly this game surprised me and I fell in love with it.
    It has a great main character named Clive who really is looking for his purpose in the world while reconciling with his past. Kinda like a cross of DMV/GOW/FF style which at first I didn’t like but once I played it it was so fluid and had great mechanics. Cut scenes are a chefs kiss to quality while the graphics push the PS5 to the limit. Eikon battles are amazing!!!! Characters are very memorable. Can’t wait for more like this but still would like to see the old style of FF gameplay once in a awhile. If they mix it up like that it would be great! Once again I’m glad I was wrong about this game, and I can keep saying more good of it.
    Only cons were, mouths were off when talking and some fps drops. Which isn’t too big of a deal to me since the fps drops was for like a second Great job SquareEnix    … Expand

    Great story, gameplay and graphics. Minor issues: the developers could have integrated a higher difficult level from the beginning and could have achieved a more stable framerate in the "performance" mode.

    Sadly I didn't enjoy this game, performance issues really make you lose the feel of the game. Final fantasy has always been ground breaking even ff14 with it's open world map. Unfortunately I dont see mich that has improved with this title and the motion blur makes it hard to look at. Your naturally gain new weapons as you progress the story. They might as well have removed levels and items so that you don't have to bother. Once every 20 hours you might have to go craft a new set of weapons/gear. I only used crafting 3 times in the entire game, not because i wasn't trying but because there was nothing new.

I really like the medieval, somewhat gloomy and more mature/serious setting, which you're not normally used to from an FF. From the narrative of the story as well as the interesting characters (with a great voice acting), theA MASTERPIECE. 100/10. I'm absolutely thrilled. From the narrative of the story as well as the interesting characters (with a great voice acting), the detailed graphic world (which is semi open, with sometimes smaller and somewhat straighter and sometimes larger areas to explore, which I think is good - after all, the focus is on the story) to the great cinematic staging and the breathtaking and perfectly fitting music that make the whole thing even more epic. I have the audio and bass really loud when playing because it's just WOW. And I mean you can pet Torgal! I don't even want to get started on the combat system. It's action-packed and incredibly fun. The boss fights are varied and a highlight. Depending on your own fighting style, Clive's skillset can also be adjusted using the numerous skills that you can learn throughout the game. You don't even have to worry about "wrong" builds, you can experiment freely. The skill points can be freely distributed and reset. And the people who hate the combat system on principle and complain and give 0 points just because it's not turn-based and claim it's not FF. I do not understand you. If it's too hard for you, you can always equip rings to make it easier for you.

    I can say I'm a big FF fan and have played almost all parts of the series and also love turn-based battles but also action-heavy ones. And if you look at the other parts, the classic turn-based combat wasn't in every part. Furthermore, both in this part and in earlier parts, there is a fantasy world in which magic is worked, chocobos, a party, mogs, crystals, the espers (sometimes less important, sometimes more). In this part they were given an important and novel role. And I think that's a good thing. How can you seriously say it has nothing to do with an FF anymore? Final Fantasy as a series itself is always trying out new things and is constantly changing, then and now. And the (alleged fans) who are building something else simply have no idea about FF if you think it's not a "real FF". Don't be so defiant and get your emotions under control. Get involved in the game and give it a chance, Yoshi-P and his team put a lot of love into it and you can feel it. It would/is a pity that the game suffers because of people like that, which it doesn't deserve at all and it's not fair either, because it's a really great game.    … Expand

    This is the epitome of Final Fantasy game that I always fantasized since I was a kid.

    The super rich Lore combined with Insanely Amazing delivery for the Story and Characters are Perfect. I also like the simplicity of the exp numbers and crafting system and yet giving an exciting Combat with just right difficulty.

    I am so glad that I'll still able to play this game in my life.

    Combat is extremely fun. Love the story. Game is gorgeous. Havent had any issues with frame rate, but slight drops or being at 30 fps doesn’t stop my enjoyment of the game. Final fantasy fans seem to be split between people enjoying the direction square is going and what final fantasy hasn’t been since 1999. Can’t wait to play on the final fantasy difficulty.

    El gameplay es ágil, aunque en modo rendimiento si note caidas de frames sobre todo cuando hay muchos enemigos en pantalla, no soy de esa gente que se vuelve loca por eso, pero si es notorio el desempeño, me gusto mucho el sistema de combos, no son dificiles, incluso sin los anillos de auto, me ubiese gustado que el modo difícil estuviera desde el inicio, porque sinceramente es el final fantasy mas sensillo de jugar ( llevo cerca de 25 horas) no se cuanto dure el juego y no he tenido un desafio en el cual me acabe mis pociones).

    Por último debo decir que Square va por buen camino, aunque extrañe los combates por turnos, (aunque sea los pudieron poner opcionales y que fueran al estilo Persona pero con la escencia de final fantasy ) este nuevo modelo de combate me parece bueno, no tan genial como DMC pero es cumplidor, y Clive es un personaje de los que vas a Amar un gran héroe, en resumen yo si recomiendo el juego es de lo mejor del año para jugar.

    Nota: No he notado calentamiento excesivo en mi ps5, no se si sea porque en mi cuarto hay minisplit, pero no he notado un sobrecalentamiento, terminare el juego y actualizare si mi consola se sobrecalienta.    … Expand

    This game is great ! Story is good, characters are interesting. Combat is fun, and it doesn’t feel repetitive. Eikon’s battles are EPIC. Performance dip’s sometimes but that has to be the only negative point i found regarding performance with FFXVI. The loot system + money spending is kind of useless in this game, but im sure they will fix it in future updates.

    I thought just the beginning of the game would be slow with the whole “walk forward for 2 seconds then watch a cutscene, then walk forward for 5 seconds and watch another cutscene” thing, but that’s what most of the game is. If you like sitting around and watching a movie, you’ll love this. The actual GAME part of FFXVI is as bare bones as you get. If you like sitting around and watching a movie, you’ll love this. The actual GAME part of FFXVI is as bare bones as you get. The combat could’ve been interesting but the battles are so easy that all the flashy stuff doesn’t matter because most enemies sit back and let you wail on them without trying to fight back, or you just need to throw in a few easily timed dodges and continue button mashing to win. After that, you’ll be greeted with more walking and cutscenes and walking and cutscenes. I made it about 15 hours into the game before I had to uninstall and be mad at myself for buying into the hype. I wish I liked this game, I love Final Fantasy games. It’s truly a terrible video game if you’re looking for an engaging experience. Even the boss battles, while very epic and beautiful, aren’t really that engaging. 2 giant monsters battle on your screen while you press one button for a QTE.     Masterpiece. Eikon on Eikon battles are some of the most epic gameplay scenes I've ever played through in a video game.

    Just buy it, it's amazing.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This had been a beautiful experience as a final fantasy fan. I have played every single final fantasy and kingdom hearts game on their original console to even re buying the games for my mobile phone. This game has implemented all the games they have done in the past 9-10 installments. From how it traverses the game to its combat. The story has been a breath of fresh air as it starts in a darker fantasy world similar to ffxiv shadowbringer and endwalker. The travel of this game reminds me of the classic final fantasy 10 where you are in segments but it still has an open travel for the full world. This give the game a less bloated feel like most other open world games where it has something to do just to have something to do at every five pixels. I was one of the few that enjoyed 15 but I’m glad that I’m not the only one that enjoys 16 I have loved playing this game and all that it has to offer as a gaming experience. I’m also really happy that they announced it’s an actual finished game upon release. With no patch 1.01 that I got for issues that usually occur during other game releases. I hope that 16 will have installments similar to 7,10, and 13. I’m excited to see what else they can cook up with this story.… Expand

Like 7 Remake, Ys, FFXV, Kingdom Hearts, Nier, Witcher and thousand others. FF hasn't been turn-based since FFXI. Anyone to say otherwise probably never played the series for over 20 years.
    The music has been the most Final Fantasy I've heard lately. The voice acting, the portrayals are really good. As for RPG elements- they're present to anyone who plays RPGs. Leveling, skills, equipment, magic. Final Fantasy elements like magic names, Eikons, crystals, grinding for weapons and all that.
    It's far from the best FF- too many issues that shouldn't have been at launch, but it's definitely a good one. Between 8.5 and 9- definitely not a 10.

    It's alright to dislike things, but to trash it because it doesn't cater to your taste (even tho it hasn't been your taste for years). You're not a gamer or a fan, you're just entitled.
    All that said, I can't wait for Game of the Year, between Resident Evil 4, Starfield, Zelda, FFXVI and what other games come out in the future.
    One thing is for sure, the GotY medley will be lit.    … Expand

    I have been anticipating this game for quite a while now and being 48% through the game I can say it has not been a let down so far.

    First off, the game is absolutely gorgeous. The graphics are amazing, and each different country you visit has a massive difference in scenery which keeps it fresh and exciting.     First off, the game is absolutely gorgeous. The graphics are amazing, and each different country you visit has a massive difference in scenery which keeps it fresh and exciting. The music you hear really adds to it, and I am absolutely in love with some songs already. There's a mix of songs you expect to hear in a RPG and some unexpected but still absolutely amazing songs keeps every boss fight fun.

    While the different types of modes is something that has not often been seen before, I do like the idea behind it. Yes, you can decide to equip all the timely accessories if you know combat is just not your thing, making it so you truly have to press one button to get through fights. But, if you're up for a bit more of a challenge or want to experiment more yourself, you can mix and match to find out what your best pick is. For example, I only use the ring for Torgal cause I know otherwise I might have difficulty remembering everything. It's useful, and keeps my gameplay fun!

    On the subject of fights, the Eikon battles I have done so far are truly something else. You never know what to expect beforehand, and sometimes the over the top attacks make you sit at the edge of your seat. They keep it exciting and fresh with cinematic strikes and dodges, making you feel like you're really doing the fight even though it has a cutscene vibe around it.

    The story is one that I find absolutely amazing. It starts off in a way you expect after the demo, but the further you get into the story more twists and turns reveal itself. Some expected, some unexpected. There have been times I have been shouting at my screen for something I did not expect happening and truly taking me by surprise.

    The side quests are an absolutely must do. While they might look like simple quests, they are essential for the lore building and give you an insight on how the people live inside this world, what their opinions and culture are. Some are absolutely heart breaking, others just really cute and a good time.

    The ATL is something I find super useful in cutscenes. If you do not want it, you do not need to use it. Everything is explained later on, but if you are really, really curious about something the characters mention it is there for you to read up on and get even more immersed. I feel it allows the characters in the game to really talk about what is going on with the knowledge they should have instead of overexplaining everything for the sake of the player.

    Some additions later on in the game that I do not want to spoil add to this, allowing you to read more about the lives, opinions and allegiances you have with characters. Again, if you just want to rush the game for the sake of completing it you do not have to do it, but to me it all adds to the experience and immersion.

    All in all, I find this game an amazing game I keep coming back to and can't wait to see what happens next. It might not be to everyone's tastes, but I implore everyone to think critically about the 0 reviews. This game is doing an amazing job of telling a story which has different layers and does not try to hide the more dark sides of the world of Valisthea.

    I have 2 minor points that annoy me sometimes, but are in no way a reason for me to look at the game in a bad light. Motion blur cannot be turned off (yet), and while it is not always noticable it is something they should patch in cause I always turn it off in my games as soon as I can.

    The audio balance between cutscenes, or just roaming the world and battles is a bit weird at times. The battles are so much louder I have to tell my friends I cannot hear them at the moment. At the same time, it does give you an extra layer of immersion. So like I said it is not exactly things to look at the game in a bad light, just slight things that might annoy you at certain points.    … Expand

    Anyone who says the game gets a 0/10 just didn't play the game. incredible cutscenes, engaging story, good character designs and fabulous gameplay. the only thing that bothers me from time to time are fps drops, but they are still tolerable because they only occur when a lot is happening.

    Llevo 15 horas y es espectacular. La trama te envuelve como si vieras Juego de tronos, el combate es adictivo, gráficos alucinantes, como si vieras una peli de CGI en muchos momentos del juego y su sistema RPG es intuitivo q más a más del sistema de información de la historia, personajes y lore en general hace q no te dejes nada por el camino. Desde FFX el mejor final fantasy

If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry.     New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
