    This is certainly one of the best Final Fantasy games.
    It comes with everything a true fan would expect, including one of the best stories the franchise ever had, some of its most likable characters, and a ton of epic moments.

    This is the first Final Fantasy game I have purchased (after playing the demo). I'm currently still playing, and everything is perfect, from the story to the gameplay. I never was a fan of the series, but that demo got me hooked, and now I am so grateful for the demo, as I would never have even looked at the game.     A masterpiece in many different ways. Combat, music, story and voice acting are all stellar. Performance mode is kinda bad, but I think this game plays great in quality mode.

    Ff16 is a masterpiece of a game, the combat is spot on! The wait was worth it, now I will say that I look forward to seeing a update to fix the frame rates.

    I started out thinking the game was a 10/10. Very strong start.
    After Cid exits everything goes downhill fast. And they draw inspiration from GOT but too pansy to actually show nudity in the sex scenes ? Witcher did it tons. I dont really care either way. What bugs me is this is just more typical SE acting like children again. If you’re going to take inspiration from something, then TAKE    I started out thinking the game was a 10/10. Very strong start.

    The lack of depth in customizing your characters performance really starts to show itself. It is VERY similar to what they did over the years in ff14 by dumbing things down far too much and instead of stopping, they just dumb it down more. A lot of people praise Yoshi like a cult leader but Ive seen this coming from him for awhile. The guy does not know how to give depth to the games player base and that bs continued in 16.

    The other problem is the dungeons. The pattern is literally a copy paste of FF14 dungeons….. Trash mob > mini boss. > trash > mini > boss

    I did not buy a single player expansion for 14. I bought ff16.
    Honestly think after 24 years of FF games this is the last one im getting. I play this and I cant just pretend I dont need a lot of depth in my character gear weapons and even level up abilities.

    If you quit finally ff14 and dont plan to go back, chances are youre not going to like 16 at all.    … Expand

    Es un excelente juego, tiene todo lo que los amantes de la acción requieren. A parte su historia, es una de las más profundas y espectaculares que he jugado, su banda sonora es maravillosa junto a su apartado gráfico. Es lo que necesitaba a la saga para un renacer. Un deleite las batallas. En resumen, es el mejor Final Fantasy que he jugado hasta la fecha. Bien square.

After playing for a day I can tell this game has everything a Final Fantasy fan could want, engaging combat, beautiful cinematics, a detailed world to explore, characters that are more than superficial, and twisting storyline that leaves you guessing.You can tell this is going to be a great Final Fantasy game when the first cinematic drops seamlessly into an engrossing combat sequence.     FFXVI is not without issues, but dang is it fun. It would be better with a motion blur toggle and some performance fixes, but everything else is fantastic. If you like action RPGs this is a must buy.

    I am on the side of the 0/10 reviews, largely due to the profanity and graphic depictions and sounds of sexual relations, which I don't find artistically significant or stylish like the creators of this and the HBO show 'Game of Thrones' think they are (or at least can be monetized to be).     The game is not trash like a lot of people say, the game got some good stuff like the combat mechanics, also the combats are very immersive and fun, and the story is pretty good (is not the best videogame story but is good enough), the cinematics are pretty awesome and the maps are also good, the quick time events are great, and the first half of the game is fun in general, Final Fantasy 16 is a good game and it could have been one of the best Square Enix games but unfortunately it wasn’t. 6/10 final review    … Expand

    Soundtrack 10/10 Soken once again proving he is the true way forward to the franchise taking after Uematsu. Gameplay 9/10 The fluid action combat in this game feels amazing. Square Enix has been puting out a lot of hits lately and been really doing a great job with final fantasy . From the ff7 remake to this .. the characters and story line is absolutely incredible , character leveling is straight forward and simple nothing is overly complicated or overwhelming , the design and sound are some of the best that has been done in recent years this is definitely game of the year ..

And to top it all off, the cutscenes and cinematic boss fight features were amazing!! This is peak gaming and I recommend this game to everyone

This is a different game all together: an effort for Square Enix to maximize its sales worldwide as a AAA title. Meaning that it has to let go some of the tropes that has made the series popular to begin with: turn based battles. This, along with FF XV, is the nail on the coffin for that particular mechanics, with the company actually hiring a Capcom veteran to supervise the action sequences. What we have is an enjoyable, albeit simplified mechanics that can be played by those who are not used to action games such as DMC, yet complex enough to be enjoyed at that level. This obviously drew a lot of criticisms from many older fans, hence the 'lower metacritic' scores. However, I do agree with them in some points: this game is uneven. It carries Square's worst traits in the last few years: it's inability to create an open world RPG that is the flavor of today's gaming landscape and its predisposition for them to tell the audience THEIR story, instead of having an audience of 'creating and living' in a story of their own making. This is a linear experience that reminds me so much of FF 13, with characters designs similar to FF XII. The positive side, in term of presentation, Square literally has gone all out and it is an incredibly produced game. You can see that looking at the scope and cost of this project, they literally moved all of their resources here, leaving some projects such as Forspoken, feeling unfinished. However, despite its advancements, it feels literally a primitive game in comparison to Tears of the Kingdom or last year's Elden Ring,, with its focus on emergent gameplay, without sacrificing its narrative. Will it sell millions? For sure. Is it a game changing sequel that will win game of the year? Sadly, it isn't.… Expand

    - THE SOUNDTRACK. Soken is a master, and the sheer variance in OSTs (216 tracks composed for the game) mean that every story arc feels different from the one before because tracks are seldom reused. Whilst always retaining a very high quality.
    - Replayable arcade content means you dont have to restart the whole game if you want to relive one of the many awesome boss fights the game has to offer.
    - Dialogue is great, will make you feel emotions (sad, happy, funny, angry).

    Game is amazing, best action combat in years, visually stunning, stellar voice acting, gripping story, endearing characters, gorgeous environments, fun and straightforward side quests, so many references to older Final Fantasy games. This is Final Fantasy, and I'm so glad we have a new mainline game this good.

    The only complaint is the frame rate issue, but other than that it’s gorgeous. The level of depth to this world and story is amazing. The combat is so fun and without ruining anything there are tons of omg moments. It’s AAA gaming at its very best. This and the re4 remake are 2023’s best games so far!! If you love action/rpgs then go get this game now

    The combat is surprisingly deep. If you don't turn on easy mode, it provides an incredible challenge that can be met with a variety of gameplay styles, from a melee focused parry build to a ranged caster that focuses on dodging. The more Eikons you get, the bigger your potential arsenal becomes.

    Graphics are just amazing. There is nothing to say. The visuals are incredible and the vistas sweeping and detailed.

    My single complaint is that there is no kind of mini map or map overlay. Either give us full map accessibility or no map.

    The FF16 team has also said that they will be patching in additional features at a later date, like disabling motion blur, which should help many people.

After some hours we get bigger areas, but there is literally nothing to do there. Rarely any good treasure/item which is worth discovering. The world and exploration feels very flat. There are no distractions from the story (like mini games at least or any other activities). How is this different from Final Fantasy XIII?

    World map is just locations where you can click to teleport which again takes away the immersion

    Side quests are the worst part of the game. Most of them are completely pointless (there are really no good prizes for finishing them) and boring. Item crafting, skill tree and stats/equipment are very basic and to be honest are probably there just to still call it an “rpg” because they are very simplistic and not in a good way    … Expand

    The game of course has its problems, like sidequests and exploration, sometimes the pacing is weird. Also the dialogue in some sidequest is awkward i can see some finding the combat repetitive.

    in a nutshell the main story is a 9, the soundtrack is a 10, the combat is 9.5, extras such as exploration, and sidequests i give it a 6. Overall i give it a 9 since combat, soundtrack and presentation are the main focus of this game.

    So far, this is one of the best entries in the franchise in a long time. Excellent storytelling and world building as I would expect from CBU3. There are some obvious issues such as the aggressive motion blur and frame rate in performance mode, but overall, an excellent experience.

    The graphics, art-style and cinematography is absolutely stunning! My jaw dropped wide open just watching the intro cut scene. Crisis Core on the Switch, I think, prepared me with an insight as to how the combat mechanics would work and, more generally, all of the newer mechanics and systems this game provides.
    These are all certainly a huge change from the turn-based and conservative FF JRPGs I'm so heavily used to by now, but I am incredibly entertained and do not see it taking away from my experience whatsoever.

    I am currently playing on game on action mode, as I am also a fellow masochist that always plays any game on the most difficult mode from the start, and I am thoroughly enjoying the rewards of being challenged in battles. My only critique yet is the lack of a "nightmare" or "souls-like" mode of difficulty from the beginning, only because I consider myself a veteran in the ARPG / multitasking-reaction-battle category and I imagine, like most games that don't involve player skill as its core mechanic, the game will only become easier as I don't think there is a player-skill ceiling to master once I optimise my equipment. I may yet be surprised, however, but for now this is the only thing holding me back from giving this a 10. You think I'm being unfair? Because difficulty is not of the essence of the franchise? Go cry in a corner, peasanty square-smasher.

    In terms of actual performance, my expectations were incredibly high as I viewed (as an outsider) the PS series as the gold-standard of performance hardware alongside PC. Gratefully, the 60 FPS HD promised to me has definitely been delivered and I haven't yet noticed any visible frame drops on performance mode. I will admit that the FPS drop is noticeable on the max. graphical mode, but as I do not own any 4K output, there's no reason for me to use this setting!

    With everything considered, I can completely see why Sony decided to showcase FFXVI with a console bundle. This is 100% what a flagship software title should live up to.

    I've never experienced the endorphin tingles for 30 minutes straight without being on cocaine before, and I have FFXVI to thank for that.    … Expand

    SQ wanted to 'evolve the series' by turning it into an action game.     In addition to that, the game looks very mediocre. There are times when it really looks good, but through 90% of your gameplay, it looks bland. Its almost as if the level designers behind Forspoken worked on this in their free time.

    The story is good, and what is keeping me playing it. But after 10+ hours its a drag. Everything is on rails, no point in doing side quests, equipment you won't have to work towards. Its all just there for you when its supposed to be.

    That said, I'll put that to one side in this review and be strictly objective, I'm 23 hours into my play through and have just passed the second time skip, this review will be spoiler free, however.

    The Good:
    The graphics are excellent.
    The soundtrack is good, Soken is putting in the work yet again and doesn't disappoint.
    Set piece battles are an absolute visual treat, probably some of the best in the franchise, they're really spectacular.
    The main cast of characters are all very likable.
    The voice acting is for the most part fantastic
    Combat is flashy and looks excellent
    The plot is good, if you put in the reading hours.
    The world is very pretty.

    The Bad:
    Performance is abysmal, graphics mode runs at a decently stable 30fps, performance mode runs at anything between 30 and 45fps and jumps around constantly, I found myself playing on graphics mode as a stable frame rate is less distracting than one that jumps around all over the place, still I'd have taken a graphical downgrade for a stable 60fps performance mode.
    Combat is visually flashy, but lacks any depth, you evade, hit stuff with square x4 then triangle, and use your abilities on cooldown, there is no other meaningful strategy involved.
    During my 23 hours with the game I've noticed quite a bit of reuse of bosses, the one that stands out are the dragoon bosses, I'm not sure if we're just going though the whole colour pallet but so far I've fought a silver, white and black one.
    Combat is laughably easy, and difficulty options are locked behind new game plus, enemies engage you in groups but attack you one by one, completely breaking any immersion, not that it matters since anything that isn't a mini boss or boss, never gets a hit in because you stun lock them with all your attacks or one shot them all with AoE abilities.
    Equipment, crafting and just items in general are massively gutted and mostly pointless
    Quest, chest and combat rewards give you materials for crafting most of the time, leaving you feeling cheated, as they're feeding you items for a pointless system.
    Side quests are bland and boring, they feel like MMO fetch quests.
    The plot makes sense, but you need to do a large amount of outside reading in order to understand it, if I can't understand a plot without external help, that's a bad plot. Also it's a real rollercoaster in terms of pacing, one minute I'm in some hype set piece encounter then the next I'm gathering apples for some reason, and these peaks and troughs happen throughout the game.
    The world is very empty, there isn't much of anything to discover by going off the beaten trail.
    The set piece battles are either VERY simplified versions of regular combat, or entirely QTE events, they're extremely impressive to look at, but not very interesting to play.

    All in all, this game is a middling action game, it gets a decent amount right, but all the bits it gets right are the bits I'm not playing, they're the bits I'm watching. It pains me to know we lost the best RPG's in the history of video games, and this is what's wearing its skin.    … Expand

But that said FF16 is a step up and when I say this is by story, combat, and characters and my word the soundtrack is god tier possibly the best ost in a FF game it deserves a Grammy nomination for how gorgeous the soundtrack is. Voice acting is well done but a few hit and misses. FF16 is a game that has influences of God of War, DMC and Game of Thrones and a few others. It blends well to the overall arc and FF16 has the most appropriate lore menu to know the world and set of characters and environments. You can switch different types of abilities that you get as you progress in the game to do heavy combo attacks. You can make the game easier for you if you put necklaces like extra Gil, extra exp or successful dodging. I highly recommend you don't but if you find yourself struggling then by all means. The soundtrack is a masterpiece and it defines what a jrpgs are about! Any jrpg fans knows when you hear Latin chants and orchestra music you know stuff is gonna be epic. Characters are all great in their own way. But some don't get enough screen time and it's hard to care for them. Boss fights are epic, poetic it vastly the best part in the game. Now the bad.. technical issues. FF16 was never supposed to get a day one patch but was not the case however the patch didn't do nothing to fix the issues regarding the frames in performance mode and I mean it drops all over and that's not good especially when it was never supposed to get one til later after release. Hopefully the next patch fixes this issue. Side-Quests..well they are okay some are rewarding and some are just bland. Motion blur is terrible.

    From my experiences with FF16 with 20 hours playtime I can say it's a masterpiece in it's own way with a few minor issue that needs to be fixed asap. Other how great the story is, this not an open world but a liner road with semi open fields and valleys. Party is two or three depending on who is with you. If you need healing your K-9 will heal you if you ran out of potions. Crafting is a basic as it can get if you have the materials then your all good. The game does have a training grounds to test out your new abilities and there is an arcade mode you try out to get high scores in previous locations and play the bosses again if you like.

    My final score for FF16 is a 10, however this doesn't mean it's a perfect 10. I have debated if I should give it a 9 but if you fix the issues on a technical side it deserves a 10. FF16 bares out to be the best along side FF10 and 7 og.    … Expand

    Just amazing, the story and the boss fights with a masterful ost are really the highlights of the game! The gameplay varies according to the sequences too! I'm at 16 hours of play and frankly for now he has a place in the GOTY race against Zelda

    Easily in my top 3 favourite ffs. Just behind ff9 and ff8 I belong to that gang who hasn't properly enjoyed an ff since ffx. I haven't played 11 or 14 But 16 is back to glory.

    This game is dang near perfection. The action, the story, the characters, the world. It's takes everything to a whole new level.

    People trolling this by giving it low scores are just trolling and are most likely just trying to guarantee TotK wins GOTY because they know how good this game actually is!

    Disappointment is the right word, I played about 18 hours and I can say that this game is not Final Fantasy, it’s something else, it looks more like a Devil May Cry with big fps drops and look that I’m not complaining about that, I miss the old Final Fantasy.

    Another thing I usually look for in a Final Fantasy game is secret dungeons and secret bosses.
    But in Final Fantasy 16 there are no secret dungeons and no secret bosses.
    (yes, because those pseudo hunts made with copy and paste monsters are indecent)
    And if I add how all the Boss fights in history are filled with QTEs and cutscenes, it's almost like playing a simpler version of Kingdom Hearts 3.
    You heard right.
    Because the QTEs of FF16 are the equivalent of the Attraction Flows of KH3, but worse because they are more guided.

    Conclusions, Final Fantasy 16 is in my eyes a horribly bad Final Fantasy game.
    And it's not enough to create a story with quotes and telephone references to create a good story.    … Expand

    This game is a huge step forward compared to FFXV. The combat, story, world, and exploration is so much more refreshing and better. My only complain is the quest system and how it feels dull. They added some cool RPG mechanics similar to the Witcher and Diablo so that’s a plus.

    2.) There are quite a lot of cutscenes (over 18 hours) for people who don't like cutscenes you probably won't like this game. 3.) Some quests can be boring, these quests do help expand on the world though. I will not explain why they expand on the world due to possible spoilers, but if you approach the game with the story in mind I'm sure you can piece it together.

    Bad
    1.) Motion blur is currently an issue but we are told it will be addressed.
    2.) You will run into popping, that is in every game bit I will include it since I know people don't like it. 3.) There is a lack of minigames which is a staple for a lot of final fantasy games.
    4.) The customization and item selection is not very good.
    5.) There is a lack of diversity in the total amount of regular enemies you fight, maybe between 13-20 different normal enemies others are pallet swaps.

    Overall what I look for in a game is a good story and for it to be fun to play, and this game does that.
    Yes the game has flaws, but the overall experience with is has been positive.

    Lastly, for everyone saying you can beat the game with 2 buttons, you're right, but you should check your equipment, I think you have the auto combo and auto dodge rings equipped. Also for everyone saying that the game doesn't even hit 30 fps in combat, digital foundry created a video on it, and I'm assuming you're referencing that since I can't even notice the frames drop, it's 99% 30 fps on graphics mode with a 1% drop in populated cities. The game also stays at a consistent 60fps when in combat in performance mode and drops when outside of combat.

    A gripping story, a dynamic combat system and the gigantic staged esper battles make Final Fantasy 16 (previous playing time: 15 hours) a feast for the eyes, ears and fingers and largely fade away minor flaws such as weak side quests and an unstable frame rate.

    Terrific story and characters. A marked improvement on FF15. Combat might not be to everyone's tastes but I liked it. Final Fantasy has always been about pushing the envelope and trying new things and this is no different.

If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry.     New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
