This should have been a 5/5. The franchise has had enough time to mature and there have been enough heavy hitters from other studios to show what works .

This game is Final Fantasy in name only. Absolutely nothing about it hearkens back to what Final Fantasy used to be. There are no party members, it is not an RPG and they say the F word more times than a Limp Bizkit song. Final Fantasy XIV is the last great Final Fantasy to ever be made if this is the direction the series is going.

It would make more sense to call this game something

It would make more sense to call this game something completely else because Final Fantasy it is not. Do not waste your time or your money. You can't manipulate stats to make "builds", it's extremely linear and is filled to the brim with gore. You can't equip new weapons or armor, there are no side activities, no secret bosses or anything like that. It's basically the Last of Us, everything to look at and nothing to do. I remember when one of the developers said they were concerned about the direction Final Fantasy gameplay was going. They were correct.

Imagine taking Kingdom Hearts and doing to that what they have done to this game. Naoki Yoshida, I expected better from you.

We're solo so much and supporting characters pop up here and there, but they're not always with you, so there is no building bonds between the characters... or between you and the characters. The main character therefore isn't being challenged, he doesn't evolve or change or grow as a person... He's the same at the end as he was at the start. Then there's the loot. The loot is boring. It's the most barebones stat increase (your +5 to attack). There's no fun there, no elemental effects, no flair... a sword is a sword, nothing more. Then the whiplash effect of the storytelling and gameplay is separated. There is no blend of story and gameplay. The story is given to you as cutscenes and gameplay is a whole other thing. That's the old-school way to approach storytelling in games and it just doesn't work. The game takes away the control from the player so often and in such a jarring way... The gameplay itself is amazing, fighting feels great! The thing is, this is like Devil May Cry more than Final Fantasy! I like both, I like Bayonetta too... I... I just want my jRPG to be a jRPG... Levels are pointless, gear is pointless, and everything I expect from a Final Fantasy is just an afterthought.

It's really a phenomenal game, really worth playing and the price tag! Just be aware that it's not a jRPG title, this is a character action game. If you go into it like me, expecting an epic jRPG game, you will come out both disappointed and satisfied at the same time. Final Fantasy is changing... and I am not sure if I'm allowed to love it, I am unsure if the future of the franchise is bright. I mean, I was harsh on Bethesda for gutting Fallout 4's RPG mechanics... so I should be critical here too, it's just fair... but this one is so damn good... Ehhh...

You can really feel the inspiration drawn from XIV here, mainly in several of the boss mechanics and asthetic. The combat feels fluid and although you can get by just mashing square that is no fun, it is much better enjoyed doing combos and making different builds. The music is probably my biggest highlight of the game. My one complain would be that I wish the area for hunt fights was more visible. Expand

Top, the story was very captivating and the serious tone felt strange considering it's a Final Fantasy game but it was so welcome Loved it.

    ((10 out of 10))

(Graphics - Character Models - Music)

Amazing, The music was awesome, the graphics was breathtaking.

the character models was amazing for the most part, there were some parts however that felt a bit off but overall was great.

    ((9.5 out of 10))

(Fight Mechanic - Quests - Exploration - Equipment)

This is where the game lacks a lot in my opinion, and I'll go in details.

Fighting system: gets better as you continue playing, but still feels chaotic and most of the time you won't understand what is actually hitting you with all the effects screen, for a game that wants you to be precise and dodge parry they sure made it hard to do that, especially when you cast some spells, you won't see anything, literally, yes I'm looking at you wind girl.

Quests: Outright BORING, I literally felt sleepy each time I'm doing quests and with the amount of boredom I starting skipping all the dialogs just get it over with, and even with that was really bad :(.

Exploration: Seriously, I see a shiny item guarded by a tough enemy, killed the enemy, only to find it's "2 Gil" or this damned "Sharp Fang", I lost interest in exploring mid game and just followed the main quest, really poor.

Equipment: Man, this was soooo lazy, no interesting item whatsoever, no perks no nothing, upgrading your weapon means (from 5 to 10 attack) that's it, even the best weapon in the game, accessories the same (Increase damage - Reduce Cooldown), no creativity

This part is where the game lacks so much.

    (( 4 out of 10))

Overall the game gets carried heavily by the story and the graphics, the gameplay was just lacking so much unfortunately.

Final Verdict: 7.8 out of 10, and no thanks to the gameplay of the game.

Those down are often the sidequests that are not bad in themselves but rather that some can break the pacing while others provide some really interesting situations, specially the ones that are tied to main story beats. Hunts are awesome, and the design of finding them could have been used for the actual sidequest imo. Story is amazing probably the best in the series, not for the "seriousness" but for its actual telling of the story, it lets things breathe and set in. Active Time Lore is amazing and it needs to be present in more games that present such a major scope of concepts and characters, so useful. Combat is incredible, however action character games can be as fun as you want them to be. Just like in Devil May Cry games you can beat them by just spamming "Stinger", such as you can beat this game by just button mashing. However, you can make tham as fun as you want them to be, you can stay in the air an perform the sickest of combos and never touch the ground, or you can be a parry/counter machine, you can be an allrounder of mixing both. It al depends on you. And im not even getting on the Eikon vs Eikon battles that demands to be seen on your own. Soken is a beast, Major orchestrial arrangements to some industrial 90's rock songs and some techno here and there, incredible truly the master of music genre. In the end as any game ever created it has flaws but it has the things there to make them be shove to the background. 10/10 and i hope they keep taking risks and doing something different in future installments.

I could not recommend this game more. The gameplay is tight and engaging, with lots of variety. The minimal crafting is appreciated as well. There are plenty of other titles with deep crafting, so I enjoyed the break from that sort of thing.

I love the story-focused adventure here. It’s rare to get a high quality title like this anymore. Great production values, to boot. Better than most movies or shows that have been produced since 2016.

Long time fan of the series.

While the combat system and framework of RPG customization mechanics may be an even further departure from even the 7 Remake games (both combat systems being fine with me), I feel the overall package of this game is an excellent entry in the series and deserves acknowledgement as a legitimate entry in the series.

Combat feels fresh and the customization of how you use Clive's Eikonic abilities, in addition to the use of Torgal gives an avenue of player skill expression into how one approaches the game. There is a base level where unfamiliar players can execute basic actions, utilizing abilities on cooldown, and allow the AI to maintain your pet companion. Players desiring to expand their mastery over these systems may look to devising ways to effectively reduce Stagger Bars, timing pet commands mid-combo in ways to debilitate enemies from reacting or extending their combos into impressive strings of aggressive follow-through, culminating in devastating assaults on will-broken enemies. There is room for all types of players with this iteration of a Final Fantasy battle system to enjoy nuance as much as they would like to.

The story maintains a high level of polish for almost the entirety of the playthrough before falling on to some very standard tried-and-true Final Fantasy story beats. The opening of this game and the implementation of the ATL system has allowed me to introduce the series to other players that have never given an FF game a try due to the perception that the stories are complex fantasies with terminology not clearly defined for players without extensive research into data-logs/bestiary entries.

Voice acting and localization is probably the highest quality its been since XII, but that game is a favorite entry of mine. All main characters and adjacent are well written and voiced, making more believable character interactions. This is probably one of the most organic romances I have seen in a final fantasy game in a long while. Side Quest NPCs having an unexpected amount of additional voice acting/cutscenes was also a welcome surprise and I will be expecting this to expand further in future entries.

Soundtrack and sound quality are also on levels that are laudable. Soken did an excellent job with this OST, with tracks during certain sections of the game really lending to the high energy spectacle on screen with genre swaps that will catch you off guard. They fit the scenes they occur in and succeed in shaking up the feeling of the game. The audio design of combat, abilities, and general gameplay are all top-notch quality and expertly delivered.

Visual spectacle in a Final Fantasy game is a no-brainer, from the grim, dark, turbulent world the characters live in, the beautiful and varied vistas you are able to navigate, to the over the top action set pieces, expectations of a feast for the eyes will not be found lacking.

I appreciate CBU3's first outing in a non-MMO mainline game for the series, with their dedication and reverence towards the series found in FFXIV really showing in their presentation of FFXVI. While there are fans that will not accept any other iteration not purely deferential to the original roots of the series, I believe the continued evolution and spirit of the franchise is clearly presented in this game and is worthy of top marks from me. I can only hope that the general reception to this entry is as appreciative as I am towards it, to allow the developers to continue working their craft in future FF games.

9/10- an excellent games for fans with minds open for change as well as newcomers that would like to start somewhere in this wonderful 36-Year expanse of stories and experiences that old veterans of the series vocally cherish.

I think the story and cutscenes are great so far. I don't mind being on rails so long as the rollercoaster is fun with lots of twists and turns and loop-de-loop here and there and so far the story has that in abundance. I understand the criticisms of inclusion and the weakness of many of the women in the game, but I think those criticisms are a bit overblown. Overall, the setting in Final Fantasy games has always been a Japanese take on European fantasy, so the feudal values and almost exclusively European looking cast is fitting. That said, I would be interested to see a modern Final Fantasy set with a woman as the lead or even a person of color. Maybe in the next numbered game they could try that.

The combat feels fresh and active. The character customization is a bit lacking for a role-playing game.

My main complaint about the game is the poor performance on the Playstation 5. Even in Performance mode the game struggles in some fights and scenes. Even when you lock your Playstation to 1080p. They try to hide this with extreme motion blur but that makes the game somewhat headache inducing if you move the camera around a lot while running around in open areas. It is such a shame to see one of the biggest negatives of a game be the performance because otherwise this game is a solid 9/10 for me.

The main content of this game is really strong, and I enjoy the story and the characters. Unfortunately, I don't like the side content very much. The side quests feel very MMORPG, and they're quite hand-holdy. I think I would have had less of a bad reaction about them if I hadn't just finished playing TOTK when I picked up this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As for someone who played FF games since the late 90s until FF15, this doesn’t feel like a final fantasy at all. You cannot summon any eikons or aeons/espers. Instead, you just channel their powers. I fell in love with summoning these helpers/summons before but it’s suddenly gone in FF16.

The battle is dull and quite boring. It’s mostly smashing square and triangle most of the time.

It’s really lacking any RPG and FF elements that we, long time FF fans, used to have before.

Maybe I won’t finish this game. And until Square Enix goes back to its FF roots, I won’t be buying FF17.

Final Fantasy XVI is a decent action combat game with minimal RPG elements, a linear progression, but really good graphics. The graphics cause me to get dizzy when I play though and so unfortunately is not for me. If you like Devil May Cry or God of War you will probably like this game. If you only like the classic turn based Final Fantasy games, this probably isn’t the game for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game started off strong, with solid pacing, a strong premise, interesting characters and dialogue, but the game's quality quickly plummets. Themes of War, Racism, Classism and Environmentalism all take a backseat to the typical “diety is an ass" plot. They had a chance to keep this story grounded in the human conflict like the precious Game of Thrones they admire, but instead go for this nonsensical villain who can't mind break Clive when he had ample chances to do so.

    Spoiler Thoughts:
    The story
-They ruin Joshua's character; as an adult, he just waffles and riddles all the time; he'd talk about his brother's fate as if he had some revelation to reveal to the player when we first meet him, but he didn't; he's just some clueless wanderer with awful dialogue.
-Annabella appeared to be a really interesting character at first, but by the end, that wasn't the case; she did things that seemed like she had knowledge that would be revealed later on, but instead, she was just a generic evil mother with no depth, no redeeming qualities and no character arc.
-Speaking of character arcs, they don't exist in this game. Clive had one at the start where his motivations changed from vengeance to saving the world, but that was the only interesting one; otherwise, all the characters are one tone with no development.
    Endgame Story
-Ultima and Barnabas, were disappointing villains, just generic bad guys.
-Ultima was just a generic monotone evil deity who wants no free will. So the game's theme is "defying fate". What interesting thing can we as players take away from it? Absolutely nothing!
    The Sidequests
-The sidequests are terrible; I completed them all and regret wasting my time; they are simply fetch quests or killing generic bandits/monsters. There were no interesting side villains or plots. At least some companions had tailored sidequests, but it was such a waste of time as there was no character arc or deepening of our understanding of the character in a MEANINGFUL way.
-The sidequests were also always low budget, with everyone just standing there with 0 expressions and talking monotonously, it was a real snoozefest. We didn't need 100 different sidequests; Focus on Quality over Quantity!
    The companions
-The companions don't even have their own opinions; they just suck up to Clive or exist. The vendors, Joshua, and Jill are dull and with no development. Jill has some but it was just to be a damsel and do nothing by losing her powers.
-Gav and Cid were the only interesting hideaway companions.
    The protagonist
-Clive was interesting as a kid and in his twenties because he had interesting exchanges with everyone, but he becomes boring in his thirties. I wish he had a smidgeon of personality or depth but he stays flat, anyone who could have had an interesting dialogue with him is gone like Cid.
    The good
-I will say that the boss fights with Benekdita, Hugo, and Dion were spectacular, but with the main villains being ass, the sidemissions being bloated, and none of these characters getting proper development, it just feels like this game is just short-lived spectacle with no depth.
    The Gameplay
-Combat was pretty good at first, but after you've mastered everything the combat has to offer by the 20 hour mark, then onward it just feels like you turn your brain off and use muscle memory to get a victory. This combat would have felt more appropriate for a 20-hour experience like DMC rather than FF, which was 50 hours long for me. You gain new abilities, but it doesn't make the game any more enjoyable; you still have to dodge and spam supers to reduce health, because your normal hits barely do anything anyway.
-Gameplay could have had longevity if there were RPG elements in it, but without them, the game's combat drags. Weapons and armour were simply chosen based on higher stats, and rings had minor effects such as +5 damage, which were completely useless when your base damage is like 400.
-The maps have no interesting loot. Chests contain useless items such as +5 salt. You realise the illusion of exploring pretty quickly, where you find you are wasting your time and are best off doing objectives.
    Conclusion
Overall, the game was interesting until Anabella died, after which it died. Sidequests are a pain. The gameplay becomes monotonous. Pacing is hampered by some main quests that also have long fetch quests. There were no interesting characters left alive. Interesting characters such as Benedikta, Hugo, Cid, and Anabella perish. Dion was interesting but becomes lifeless when joining the crew.
    Marketing
-I don't like how marketing lied about the sidequests being deep.
-They also made it appear as if there would be a deep story, instead, it was a straightforward story of man versus deity, but with tedious Kingdom Hearts waffle dialogue. They didn't even use flashbacks for Valthesia in the past, instead, we just get boring exposition from Ultima. The game struggles with telling but not showing.

This is arguably one of the best FINAL FANTASY games I have had the pleasure of playing for years now beside FFXIV. As a fan of the series my self for over a decade my definition of FINAL FANTASY would be its sprawling worlds and characters that fill it, as well as each games rich story and lore with recurring chocobos, crystals and Cid’s! FINAL FANTASY XVI delivers on all of these fronts giving a deep story with lovable characters, chocobos and YES Cid’s! Moreover It’s amazingly fast action combat for the first time in the series, for my experience I think this combat is so good that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was implemented in future entries.

FINAL FANTASY XVI also delivers some of the best voice acting in a new mainline FF game to date, every encounter feeling like real people with real problems something you can’t always say with a new FINAL FANTASY game. As expected for FINAL FANTASY, it’s bosses never disappoint and it’s music even more so thanks to Masayoshi Soken’s incredible score, giving some of the most epic experiences I’ve had playing a video game and for those experiences alone I want to see this game at the front of everyone’s minds-this game is truly something special!

Thanks you CBUIII and Yoshi-P for a new and memorable FINAL FANTASY game!

I can also say that I do really appreciate the humor? There were a lot of things that were genuinely funny. Koji Fox and the other creators gets a round of applause for the clear love they put into this game.

I would definitely pay some money for a few extra DLC, but unlike FFXV, it's clear that the game is actually complete. Do I want more? Yes. The core of any Final Fantasy game is its strong story and characters, and I frankly don't care if the game is "too linear" or "not open world" as long as the story is riveting and well delivered. In fact, it's sometimes nice too not have to worry about FOMO with open world games or get upset over the illusion of choice when your choice actually has no impact on what happens. And what a ride this game is! I'm frequently alternating between raising my fist in euphoric victory or having goosebumps erupt on my skin--especially during the eikon fights. The narrative scale is big--delving into several different warring nations with very different cultures. The cast is huge. Clive is a compelling protagonist to meet during childhood (there is a slight bittersweet feeling since you know that BAD STUFF is going to happen to such a good-hearted and promising kid) and follow through adulthood.

The side characters are well fleshed out. Channeling Game of Thrones, not everyone is safe, yet their deaths don't feel contrived. The voice acting is phenomenal! Shout out to Cid! I've played several other Final Fantasy games (with a few recurring characters that usually take minor roles), and FF16's is my favorite Cid.

The cinematics are beautiful. Other people have mentioned frame dropping but I have luckily not noticed any issues with that on performance mode. I enjoy the battle system. I'm more of a grind, overlevel, and become OP kind of person (ie opposite of Dark Souls). I actually found the fighting style pretty complicated if I wanted to fight smartly/do combos instead of button mashing. It is so satisfying getting a simple perfect dodge followed by counter. There are so many possible eikon-driven combos to try out as you progress through the game. And you can respec your abilities at any time for free.

There is so much I could go on and on with. Such a goooood game!

Very fun combat, absolutely some of the best voice acting and music you can find, spectacular fights and cutscenes and an interesting story that can take you about 30-50 hours to complete, depending on the amount of side stuff you do. Also, Clive is up there with one of the best jrpg protagonists of all time.

I love this game. I have played all of the numbered Final Fantasies except for 11 and this one fits right in. The voice acting is awesome, I love the combat and it looks beautiful. It is definitely worth it.

It is different from older FFs, yes; it is not perfect, yes. But just like Tears of the Kingdom, it is super fun to play. Whoever gave 0 review is either an idiot, or simply doesn't possess a PS5, or XBOX/PC simp. You can't expect any more from this if you have just played it for a while.

This is the best game I have played this year from the story the graphics and the gameplay I have no complaints! I love the accessable options as well. I'm not a fan of games that are to hard. This game allows me to set the difficulty and focus on the story. It lets me enjoy the game the way I want to and I admire square for allowing me to have that ability unlike other trash companies.

    Estou adorando!
    Música, história e batalha excelente!
Tem muita referência do FFXIV também, o que me fez gostar ainda mais.
Quando vi o parreiral uvas, lembrei do meme das uvas. Mecânicas de Bosses, Skill de Jobs como Katon etc...

This masterpiece deserves all the hype
It’s one of the most unique experiences you can have in gaming. Wonderful art direction, sublime soundtrack, and the characters are all beautiful aswell as the magnificent Eikon summons designs . The best final fantasy game yet, and one of the best games i´ve ever played. Every person you interact with has a purpose and feeling to them.

As an old and persistent fan of Final Fantasy series, I am luck and happy enough to start my first final fantasy as ff7and ff8 twenty years ago. Surely, there is major cons for FF16, lack of traditional RPG's character/gear development, only one controllable character, etc.
But after spending 45 hrs and approaching the ending, I can feel the sincerity and devotion of this game's developer that try to continue this series and even restor some of its glory moments. FF is not a series that tweak a bit every time. it changes every generation and tells different stories but still keep the"crystal tale" as its core, that is a "fantasy" rpg story. And FF16 did it.

Also the new added action battle system gives a lot fun and battle between eikons is astonishing, which is highly recommend to play by yourself. Watching walkthrough video won't give you that.

Based on FF16 did its job(tell a complete "fantasy" story) and action game play style and soul shaking eikon battles, I would give it 10. Then minus what is missing(the traditional RPG part) -1. Thus 9.

Wish I could see a DLC of it to tell continued story of it and make up what is missing in it.

The story is entertaining in this game and the Eikon battles are breathtakingly gorgeous and fun. That’s pretty much it, the game is permanently on rails with slightly open areas that give little to no rewards. There is no difficulty slider, so you have to play on Easy or Very Easy for your first playthrough.

Lip syncing is off in most cutscenes.
Gear may aswell not exist, very small stat increases for each weapon tier and accessories provide some damage % to a specific skill of a cool-down decrease.
The ability tree also may aswell not exist.

While named Final Fantasy it may aswell be a Devil May Cry spin off, it’s structured very similar and has about as much “RPG” in it as DMC.

The highs in this game are extremely high, but the lows are extremely low, which sucks the enjoyment a little bit out of the game, but then a high comes again and you manage to put up with the low, mundane MMO style questing.

It seems they took the worst of FF14 and the worst of DMC and smushed it together. The game also suffers from performance issues, several times my PS5 has told me to turn off due to overheating issues.

Gameplay doesn’t reward exploring combat, trash will die in an eikon ability or 2, while bosses who can’t be juggled or anything are complete damage sponges. I enjoyed my playthrough, it’s not the best Final Fantasy but it’s not the worst either. If you can put up with the low periods inbetween the high periods, you’ll enjoy the game. I do have to say that anyone giving it perfect scores is completely blinded by hype. The game doesn’t deserve a 0 but it certainly isn’t a 10 by any means,

However from start to finish of 16 I was invested in the world, characters, battles and ESPECIALLY music. The game only allowing control of Clive isn’t completely new for final fantasy as most games had a locked over world character and the original 15 was this way. Clive is and is surrounded by realistic characters that aren’t overly virtuous, flawed, and likeable. The Eikonic battles drag a bit at times but the diversity in gameplay and spectacle make them each separately spectacular, and the combat is satisfying and fun to play around with. This game is such a love letter to the series from the initial pose the Dragoon is in similar to the FF4 logo, the battle theme from 8 being remixed into the battle theme here, the overall Final Fantasy musical theme being incorporated into a few songs, and even the voice acting being some of the best in any game with none of the constant gasps or grunts shoehorned into very basic movements like opening something, or moving a particular way that was littered in 15 and 13. From start to finish I was the wide eyed kid again that experienced FF7 for the first time wondering how a presentation could be so beautiful and compelling. This game will stay with me likely for the rest of my life along with GOW2018/RAG, Sekiro, and FF7. Extremely thankful to have experienced this project. Expand

A game that takes it's time in between insanely epic set pieces with dramatic moments and S tier music.

Sure, the game has its flaws as all games do, but every time I turned my PS5 off ... I just can't wait to turn it back on and continue the adventure of Clive and his pals.

CBU3 and their dev choices really shine through in FFXVI and it's refreshing to see them build something from the ground up vs working with something they inherited.

That being said the side quests are bit much. Most are optional (some will give new rewards like an increased potion pouch but those are easy to pick out of the crowd) but if you're trying to 100% the crowd expect to have to slog through some of the slower, lore/world building content.

The boss battles are not hard like most of this game the first play through, but are visually stunning.

Regardless of the points that do tend to drag, I still find myself enjoyong this game a lot and feel it's worth the high rating. It's definitely not your standard Final Fantasy game, the tones are very different, but that's not a bad thing. It's refreshing take that helps breathe new life into a series that has otherwise been struggling by a dev team that repeatedly proves that they care about the games they produce.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
