DMC5. I never thought I’d be giving a final fantasy game a bad review in my life. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. So, whoever made this game wrote a decent story, made it real pretty, and then it almost feels like they slapped an alpha version of a barebones ARPG on top of it. You’re genuinely only ever a few fights or a couple hundred yards at most away from the next cutscene, it’s frankly jarring just how often they take control away from the player, and half the time it’s to say nothing. And the world is so empty. Now by empty I mean the bestiary is like 38-40 creatures and over half of that is Eikons, some important characters, an owl you only see for a couple minutes, and then the other half are enemies. So essentially when you’re walking around any of these on rails or even semi open stages you’re going to be fighting the same 5-6 enemies for the majority of the game. And there’s geniunely nothing to do except advance the main story. The shinies on the ground on the map? It’s about 2-5 gil, a potion (of which you can only have 7 of ever), or 1-3 crafting mats. Wooden chest on the map? It’s about 100 gil or about 20 crafting mats. Finish a side quest? Oh yeah crafting mats. Boss time oh yeah!! You are rewarded with crafting mats. Major plot enemy or Eikon fight?!?! You guessed it! More crafting mats!!! And thats assuming you can get through all the QTEs they put into every Eikon fight to hide loading times that literally consist of either “press square” or “press R1” and you have like 10 seconds to do it so no rush. And those QTEs will about take care of the last half of their Hp so don’t worry. Did I mention crafting mats? Because you literally barely ever need to use it. You are 100% guaranteed to get the next best weapon from a mat dropped by last chapters boss. There are no status effects, no elemental weaknesses, which I feel like they forgot. Because enemies cast stuff like bad breath, poison mist, etc., you get several elemental spells, but all they do is damage, again no status effects, and in no greater amount than any other spell. It’s….pretty, and the story really tries to stay relevant minus some very weird points it REALLY wants to drive home and some massive plot holes, but it has some really good scenes for sure. But this game only feels like a slightly interactive visual novel with some good boss fights. Better to watch a stream or a YouTube vid because it really just feels like a GoT fan fic movie. Please don’t waste your money. Expand

Areas are pretty and monsters clearly FF14 monster designs. Makes the world feel "Final Fantasy"

Not for People who expect this to be a 2D Bird-perspective JRPG from the 90s. Those times are over. Theres MANY!! rpgmaker games you can buy on steam if you want that experience - or beat the ones you havent beaten from your childhood.

Its a 9/10 as a game for me. As a Final Fantasy it would probably get a bit less since I am not the biggest fan of the game of thrones storyline, but as a game its solid and fun to play. Keeps me going and wants me to see the story to an end.

Edit couple days later: OK, its a 10/10. Game becomes better and better and better and there is not much I would like this game to be more. Its exactly what a Story driven Adventure should be. GOOD GAME

I have completed the game with all the sidequests and I'm now replaying it in final fantasy mode so this is a review of 60+ hours into the game (no spoilers):

    - The best:

The combat system is really good and with a lot of dephth. It's low skill floor high skill cieling and exremely clean. For the normal difficulty you can get away with mashing buttons but if you are into Soulslike games the system is clean and super fun so you can try to do the fights without using potions or try for a no hit run. It rewards learning the boss pattrerns and executing clean dodges and long combos.

The boss battles are pure hype. The music, the visuals... I would say this game is a must play just for those battles.

The story and characters are amazing. The sidequests are not a filler, they are amazing but slow paced. If you want to rush into the ending you will hate them but if you relax and take your time they are very well written and rewarding. You really get to care for the characters and the world.

    - What could be improved:

The gameplay of the sidequests. As I said above the story of the sidequests is really good and I think it's a shame that because of the boring sidequest gameplay some people will not be able to enjoy them.

Without spoilers there are 2 characters and the part they play in the story that I feel were on a lower level than the rest of the game, still good but not amazing.

And finally the boss variety. Leaning the moves of each of the enemies was very fun, and I don't mind repeating them, in fact I enjoy it since I can put to test what I learned from the last encounter. Still I wish thet had added more fights with more types of enemies.

    - What I don't care:

I don't care it's not a real open world. I feel this game has decided to put the action and the combat first and I am grateful they haven't put an empty open world just for the sake of it.

I don't care you can't control a party. I have played all the mainline FF games and when first it was announced that you will be only controling a character I was sad. But the change has not been a problem for me and I was able to enjoy the game. There is still the Dragon Quest saga going on for a more traditional jRPG, I'm fine with FF innovating more since it's what the saga has always done.

    - Why did I review it as a 10?

Because honeslty the things it does good are soo really good that for me they are an 11, what could be improved is still not bad so those are a 9.

It is very different from the common "marvel" approach of all action without any meaning, it is a game that rewards the players that decide to learn about its world and to think about the themes it proposes, as well as about the gameplay mechanics.

The combat is amazing: it does not punish the failure but it rewards the excellence. What I mean is that it doesn't kill you if you fail a dodge like a souls game would, but it gives you the feedback that you fail (the enemy interrupts your attack) and if you do a timely dodge to the attacks you get the flashy animations and counterattacks and extra score. And the challenge is there for whomever wants to look for it, the ultimania mode is quite crazy in terms of difficulty.

Also about the sidequest, I personally loved them so much. They were what made the game a 10 for me. Of course, from a mechanical point of view they are not the most exciting but from a narrative point of view they allow the game to explore deeply the themes it proposes without making it too "in your face", so subtle sometimes that I feel reviewers didn't even understand what the game was about.

It's also extremely heavy on cutscenes and expository breaks as I feel I spent more time watching the game than playing it. Also observed a number of typos in the game text for items and captions.

Visually the game is quite impressive with it's details. However gameplay itself is overly simplified to timing button presses while navigating mostly linear map areas. There is little reason to explore and nearly all staples and mechanics of an RPG are missing.

The only build "options" you have are limited to the relic slots which have a limited range of options and which Eikons and skills you choose to slot. However that part just boils down to preferences on what types of moves you like as the element of the Eikon makes no difference at all in the game.

It's not a bad game. However it's not something that should have been shipped as a numbered mainline entry to the Final Fantasy series and instead been given a spinoff designation like other forays by SE to branch the Final Fantasy series outside of the RPG genre. Between this title and the direction they've been taking with changes to Final Fantasy 14, it gives the impression that CBU3's goal is to take the Final Fantasy franchise away from it's original fanbase.

Lots of flashy things to get attention but sorely lacking in substance compared to previous mainline entries in the series and even a number of the series spinoffs.

About performance, the Quality mode is flawless, but the performance one needs some improvements, for a new player I would tell you to play in Quality mode.

The game always needs a disable motion blur option, which was already confirmed to come at a later patch.~

This review could be much higher if Square Enix simply release a patch to enable custom control layout. But they don't even recognize the issue. Do they even have QA department? If so then replace them with competent people for not doing a simple job. I tried PS5's Accessibility feature combined with scheme B, I could do the combat perfectly, but then when I get to the game's menu, it gets messy again because the buttons already swapped. Also, the diamond shaped bar at the bottom right does not change according to the selected button scheme. Otherwise, this could be a sneak attempt at selling Dualsense Edge, that could swap button profiles easily. Unfortunately most of people don't have that controller, so yeah, another game for the backlog that will never see play. Expand

You might not have a true party in this game, but this cast of characters might be one of the best in the entire franchise. I found the story to be really engaging, I felt invested in the world, the gameplay is really fun and the boss fights are the absolute highlights of the game. Watching an FMV was the most hype thing back during the PS1 and PS2 days, and that has kind of been lost now. But the Eikon battles feel like the replacement for that in this game. They are breathtaking. I had a smile on my face during every single one.

Not every fan is going to be pleased, but for me 13 and 15 were not what I personally wanted out of this franchise, and even 7R made decisions I am not a huge fan of. But FF16 felt like a true return to form to me. I have played every game in this franchise besides 11, and while I still need to let it sink in a bit, I am confident this game is going to rank high among my favourite FF games. Maybe even top 3.

    2/ Great Combat System
3/ Great Story (However, a bit fall off at the end, but nonetheless it is a full experience)
    4/ Active Time Lore.

    Cons:
1/ Poor pacing of side quest. (However, there are some side quests that give the world so much background)
2/ The absence of party system. (It could be a hit or miss for people, it is fine for me. But I can tell it can affect some FF fans.)
3/ Missing some end game dungeon.

    Thoughts:
I will say I am a seasoned RPG fans and Final Fantasy fans, I am used to SquareEnix changing the formula all the time. So I am feeling fine that they are switching to action focused game play. It plays well and satisfying. Also the story kept me engaged for the hours I spent with the game. I struggle so much during FF15 and FF13.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with the good parts:
The OST is phenomenal, I'll be buying it because of how good it is. One of the best music in FF series. The battles are also interesting change. There's also many of interesting characters but..

    and here're the worse parts
while the characters are interesting, most of the fate of the characters is ...not good. So anyone who plays games for the characters and the story having a happy end, should double check if they want to play it.
The story don't have a lot of twist. It's all pretty much straightforward and predictable from start to finish. I'll be more surprised with characters living than them dying every minute. It came to this point that a moment that was supposed to be emotional made me immune and numb to it. I felt nothing because of how many deaths Yoshi-P decided to include in this game. I stopped caring about the characters fate

The ending ..is not done in a good way. It's sad that they took ideas from FFXV for the ending and by this I mean, how bad it is.

There's a weird blur in the game that can make you dizzy sometimes. I played with the "graphics" setting, so I don't know if it only exist in this setting. When monsters (most of the time the flying ones) are far away from you, it looks like they're moving in 15 FPS.
In one scene it was very obvious the FPS dropped below 30 FPS

I don't think I'll be interested in FF17 if the atmosphere is going to be similir to FF16. I play games to uplifting me but this game sadly did the opposite. I'm a long time FF fan, so this saddens me to be honest
It's not a bad game per se and if someone loves games like this, they're going to love it

I would give it a 10, but there are a bit too many cutscenses, i think alot of the non-significant cut scenes could have done on the move while actually traveling. (The story / action cut scenes are really really good - just the progression / storytelling ones weren't all neccessary I think)

Also the crafting could have been done better - its too limited, wish we had more actual armor to equip and craft such as body armor and boots. FF16 is just belt, gloves, and 3 accessories. More equippable armor would have been more fun "loot" to obtain and craft and make you feel stronger.

The early side quests aren't too great but they get better.

Combat vs trash mobs / "elite" trash mobs gets repetitive and becomes a hinderance. Sorry, but keeping it real.

The story, music, boss battles atmosphere (not neccessarily difficutly, just the scale of epicness and badassery) really bring this game up and I recommend it to anybody.

During my playthrough I did not feel compelled to explore the world as there is nothing meaningful in it (and with the game telling you exactly where to go at all times, you don't need to explore). I began to skip side quests altogether as they did not add anything to the experience (no exciting treasure to find, no interesting character development, etc.). And combat was trivialized after reaching a certain point very early in the game.

There is some fun to be had with the boss encounters and some of the story bits. There is political intrigue, plots and subplots, and grittiness, but these are all fairly shallow and don't quite scratch the itch like FFT or GOT.

    Extremely disappointing overall: 4/10

    Breakdown of pros/cons below.

    Main Issues:
    1. Quest Design & System:
The quest design and system removes the need to explore the world to find interesting interactions or characters. All designed content will be apparent through the infamous ( ! ) covering your map with who to talk to and where to go to complete it. This includes the main story. When you go to a new town or a new zone, you can simply B-line to the objective without fear of missing out.

The side quests add nothing to the game. These are your normal kill monsters, collect herbs, deliver to NPCs, talk to NPCs, etc. style of quests.

    2. Items & Treasure:
Treasure boils down to gil, crafting mats, potions/high potions, accessories, and occasionally music. Crafting mats are given very freely so there is never a need to go hunt the world for rare materials nor are they exciting to receive. At any given point in the story, you're only going to be able to choose to craft or upgrade one item in each slot: weapon, bracer, belt. You will not be constrained by limited materials or gil in this regard or have to choose between multiple options.

    3. Difficulty:
FF16 starts off with a nice level of challenge. Most likely due to the controls being new and only having a small number of abilities to use. Once you unlock three Eikons, however, the game's difficulty drops significantly. With 3 Eikons equaling 6 abilities total, you're generally able to cycle the abilities non-stop. Non-boss fights become trivial.

    4. RPG Elements:
They are there, but very shallow. Character "builds" boil down to choosing 3 Eikons from a pool of 8. Items do not add any diversity. Weapons and armor simply add attack or defense/life. Accessories come in a couple varieties: decrease a specific Eikon ability cooldown, increase a specific Eikon ability damage, or miscellaneous (xp%, gil%, damage%).

    5. Final Fantasy Charm
This is a weird one to elaborate on, but there's just something missing. Yes, the game has all the FF tropes like moogles, marbols, coeurls, etc, but they all feel lifeless. The game is very much one note: serious. Final Fantasy usually does a great job of walking the fine line between humor/wackiness and a deeply emotional story. This game completely falls on its side.

What FF16 has going for it:
    1. Bosses
Boss fights are the highlight of the game for sure. Some of the encounters were some of the most exciting in all of the FF series. I wouldn't have minded if the game was 100% boss rush with no other small encounters between.

    2. Artstyle/Music
The graphics, artstyle, and music are what you would expect from the FF series. Definitely a cut above the rest.

    3. Characters
There are some genuinely interesting character arcs throughout the story. Not all characters quite land, but the main players are what kept me engaged enough to finish.

    4. Story
The story is great, but has its pacing issues. There are a lot of ups and a lot of spots that drag on and on.

    5. Combat
Dodge and parry combat is always satisfying (just wish it presented more challenge)

The primal fights had my jaw on the floor at times and the cinematic cut scenes were always beautiful to watch. The story is great, I wouldn’t say it’s FFs best but it is much better than recent games *cough* FF15. The main character Clive has to be one of my favorite protagonists in the whole FF franchise. He’s not as much of an edge lord and actually has some wit and softness to his character which was nonetheless refreshing. Now to why my rating of this game is a two. The ending. The ending ruins everything good about this game. Take the ending of GOTs and triple it, then triple it again, and again and you have this. I have never been so disappointed in a story in all my life and if I’m honest I don’t think I ever will be again after this crap. What should’ve been a profound and bittersweet end to a long an epic story left me laughing in utter disbelief. If you really wish to play this game, I recommend skipping through the absurd amount of side quests (especially those before the main quest ‘Origin’) and going in knowing you’ll be just be left devastated and disappointed by its end. This is one of the best games that I've played recently. I love how they try to do a more interesting and intriguing battle system. The main story is extremely well-written, and the graphics are really well-polished. I finished the game in 4 days because it's just too good, and I can't stop playing it. Of course people have their likes and dislikes, so I don't think it should be praised by everyone.
I can relate to a lot of the low reviews from people who have played the game properly.
It's not that there isn't a single thing that I myself found lacking.
But I despise those who try to manipulate the score with childish and miserable feelings just because they don't like the way FF16 is rated.

I've also seen some people say that the higher rated reviews lack specificity and that the lower rated reviews are more specific and helpful.
Do you have any idea how many days it's been on sale now?
People who like this game are voluntarily taking spoilers into consideration.
I don't want to take away from anyone's enjoyment, so I can still only give abstract impressions on social media.

I've played this game for about 50 hours and it's a masterpiece, to say the least. The finish feels like the revival of the Final Fantasy series.
It is made not for nagging critics, but for game fans who genuinely love the game.
The battles, the movies and the story are all carefully designed for our maximum enjoyment.
The immersive experience is unprecedented and you never know when to stop playing.
The system that allows you to customise the difficulty of the action is really great.
The story and battle presentation are also very FF-like, beautiful and 'cool!' I want you to see it with your own eyes.
I urge you to see it with your own eyes.
For me, it's definitely the best FF ever.

-Time wasters everywhere.... so many slow menus and interrupts to the game that just aren't needed. Why on earth is so many things a hold or double action. Why does the map screen take 5-10 seconds to show etc.
-RPG system should just have been dumped. Stats are pointless, equipment is pointless, skill trees are pointless. It's more of a devil may cry game than a FF game in the regard of RPG systems and all the mentioned are just cosmetic with increasing the same number without choices.
-Difficulty is hit and miss, it's way too easy to enjoy the combat system. But the combat system is quite darn good. So having all encounters turn into a easy button mash is sad. Harder difficulties are sadly locked beyond NG+

The game that most people are 1 shotting every mob and elite, the game that I can solo every boss and stand still while press 1 singular button. Yep, same people.

Now for the real review. For people complaining about how this is "not Final Fantasy" you completely missed the point of a Final Fantasy game. The first Final Fantasy was created as a last hoorah from the developers as they were going bust, hence the name Final Fantasy. They wanted to tell a story. Final Fantasy has ALWAYS been about the story. I've played every FF except for 3 and 11, let's be real here, the combat was always easy, the hardest fights were always side quests/optional bosses. Sephiroth was a compelling enemy not because he was difficult, but because of his strength and purpose. Kefka was scary not because he was hard to beat but because he wanted to watch the world burn. FFX was memorable because of Tidus's laugh and the sad ending along with the main theme To Zanarkand. When has it ever been about "the combat"? People complaining about combat in FFXVI are simply nostalgic boomers that don't understand Final Fantasy has always been about the story.

What makes a great Final Fantasy game has always been these elements; great story, compelling characters, epic music often with orchestra arrangements and cutscene CGI ahead of it's time.

Yet, here I see the same people crying about what makes a Final Fantasy game great.

Saying the combat is repetitive is simply because you're bad. You have 6 elements with about 4 skills each, that's enough combination for variety. If you think mobs have too much HP that's because you're bad. I've seen streamers at lvl 43 deal 50k stagger damage crying about how much HP enemies and have their audience reiterate that sentiment. I've also seen streamers deal up to 150k stagger dmg and myself at 130k at lvl 40+ My only complaint would be the enemies could be hitting harder in base game

Another complaint would be that some of the side quests are too length and irrelevant or poorly placed which disrupted the pacing towards the end.

The combat is fantastic, though some might yearn for a greater level of challenge. They went all out on the soundtrack. Deviating from the open-world formula, this game sidesteps the pitfalls of excessive content, providing a more focused and refined adventure.

While its strengths are undeniable, there is a longing for more gameplay variety, such as engaging minigames and puzzles. Additionally, expanded customization options overall and especially for party members would have added depth to the gameplay experience.

Final Fantasy is series that needs no introduction, it's been running strong for 35 years now. My introduction to the series was with the original game on NES back in 1988 I rented it from my local video store in Miami and was instantly hooked I was into D&D, Zelda, Lord of the Rings, Thundercats and He-man. Years latter I borrowed Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and me and a friend played the hell out of it during summer and beat it then When School started that same friend borrowed Final Fantasy 2(4) and after completing that I rented 3(6) and kept going. The one thing consistent with every entry was innovation and change. Try he first game was literally a homebrew D&D campaign, 2 has a story a little too similar to star wars with a unique progression 3, had Jobs and Summons, then 4 came and Changed the series forever with deeper story more focused character development and the Active Time Battle system witch took the series from the traditional turn based combat similar to TTRPGs that influenced the series to a more engaging battle system and the series continued to evolve it's system and story telling . And that brings us to Final Fantasy 16. The naysayers will say that this is not a Final Fantasy because it's combat and their wrong and we'll go over that more in this review.
    VISUALS/PERFORMANCE:
Let's get one thing straight I'm not a tech expert or someone who recognizes small frame dips, if it's a significant dip sure or obvious pop in I can call it out, but these are not things I experience in my playthrough. Square-Enix nails it and I don't think anyone will argue that SE are masters in CG and graphical presentation. The level of detail is incredibly the lighting the way the grass moves the particles effects and subtle hair strains life like movement. The game is a visual feast for the eyes CBU3 worked some incredible magic and this game truly feels next gen the work and love to that went into creating this world is plain to see and I dare say perfection.
    AUDIO:
The music is just epic new tracks and remixes of older tracks from the long history of excellent music clearly a love letter to FF's musical history. The voice acting, Yoshi-P was right to use a British cast the dialogue was coherent did I feel that any of the voicework felt out of place. The sound department does not disappoint more on that with gameplay.
GAMEPLAY: The exploration is satisfying, the combat wich was designed by the guy who did DMC5 created a very engaging system especially once you start unlocking more eikonic abilities and mastering them you can mix and match despite your eikon set up (3 at a time) to match your play style or what a situation calls for. With the excellent audio every slash, stab and smash feels so gratifying especially with the dual sense controller, later on Torgal aka Goodest boy ever gets some new bells and whistles that will have long time fans minds blown. STORY:
This is gonna sound like I'm signing a check I can't cash but this is the best storytelling in a Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX/PSP) from the tragic opening moments the game pulls you in. Never have I cared so much for supporting characters in game as this they have all been well written especially Cidoulfus this games Cid who is a small not to Orlandu of FFT fame. Clove is also one of if not the best protagonist written, going through three different points in his life was a great way to show how the character grows from humble noble to a man fixated on revenge to well I'm not going to spoil the story beats any further. Even some of the side quest had me carrying about village inhabitants and even goblins.
    CLOSING REMARKS:
I have been a fan of the series since the 80s and every game was different from the last ill admit some did sit all to well with me but the fact that every title is something new and they are willing to take risks is why the series has been around for the last 35 years it release clicked with some player out there in some way and 16 is no different. I have no bad thing to say about nor am I wishing it had some other feature, I'm reviewing the game for what it is and I'm all for it I'm so glad Yoshi-P and stuck to their vision and they have shown just how talented they are. Thank you Yoshi-P and CBU3, you have truly created something special and look forward to future single player projects from you in the future.

The combat was intricate and kept evolving as I played further and further. It allowed for constant experimentation and changing up what could have been monotonous with the additions of more Eikon powers Clive unlocks: some are suited for dodging, some countering attacks, some blocks, some attacking from a distance.
The plot was compelling and the performances of the actors carry the story through fantastically. One of the factors that stood out to me was that this script held english as a priority and the japanese dialogue was dubbed around it. As such, the dialogue beats lacked a lot of anime tropes that many FF games have had in the past. Some found it charming and a quirk in the franchise's favor, but you cannot deny this iteration's dialogue lacks an awkward pause in the middle of the sentence that is unfortunately due to limitations of dubbing another language's dialogue.

However, Final Fantasy XVI takes a traditional yet proven approach by engaging players with captivating story cutscenes and an exciting, diverse combat system. It delivers a mind-blowing experience that will leave you in awe during your initial playthrough.

The story is well-crafted, effectively capturing your interest and making you invested in the characters. The music and sound design are of top-notch quality, enhancing the overall immersive experience.

However, if you're seeking deep RPG character development, Final Fantasy XVI may not be the right choice for you. Character progression primarily relies on improving your combat skills and understanding your opponents' moves, rather than through intricate character arcs.

The side quests in the game are enjoyable, especially if you're willing to slow down the pace and explore the finer details of the world and the people you're striving to save. It's worth noting that the animation quality in side quest sequences is somewhat downgraded, reminiscent of the style seen in The Witcher 3.

In summary, if you have a preference for epic combat, cinematic storytelling, and the inclusion of adorable dogs or wolves, Final Fantasy XVI is an experience you shouldn't miss out on.

As a longtime fan of the FF series, (FFXIII was a letdown and FFXV just felt unfinished and unfulfilling), I'm happy with how FFXVI turned out. FFXVI doesn't fail to deliver brining with it a refreshingly mature and darker narrative than previous installments and a satisfying new take on combat that pushes the franchise further down the path of transitioning from turn based to more fluid action focused combat which has been evident with installments evolving this way since the FFXII era. Pushes the envelope beyond expectations however is the sheer fun and exhilaration added by Eikon battles, these larger than life battles will have you on the edge of your seat and set a new standard for how satisfying every boss fight should be.

What has been delivered here may not satisfy a gamer who seeks retro style games with turn based combat, but it has met the standard set by modern RPG competitors and created a uniquely FF spin on what a modern RPG should be. Let's not forget the phenomenal production quality this game provides as well, the soundtrack be Soken never fails to amaze and the world crafted by the amazing art and design teams at Square Enix make this possibly the most immersive and visually stunning experience I have had while sitting on a couch.

This is at best an AAA title for Nintendo Switch (and I play on Nintendo Switch too) and I would be thrilled if this is not called a Final Fantasy game and is a debutant like Hogwarts Legacy was.

You know how FFXV had "A FF for fans and First timers"? (and it really is that). SE, you made your shot with calling up newcomers, you delivered, what you delivered, drop it off and return to roots. This one should be "A FF for Tik Tokers and those with attention span of a gold fish". This game is bad even for "hack and slash" type of games. I really don't see how is this called a FF game, when it's clearly a mish-mash of more popular games of this genre (God of War, DMC) with a "GoT" wannabe story. I expected Hogwarts Legacy to be watered down to bare bones of what deserves to be called an RPG, but I don't understand why SQUARE ENIX decided to cater to eventual newcomers, because there are plenty of other games out there that are "meta" and easy enough to play for people that are starting in JRPG and RPG overall. Final Fantasy was known for it's kinda complex combat system and managing right tactics at right time and it has a specific audience. It makes me sad seeing how they dumbed down whole game for masses.

Starting with preformance issues on preformance mode, reviewers described it as "minor stutters here and there"- No. They are not minor stutters here and there, but every time you enter some kind of "city" I would get motion sickness from such a poor optimization, and it doesn't get better with spending time there, it's the same if I just entered the place or I've been in it for 30min. Lack of customization in graphic settings is sad, I automatically turn of film grain and motion blur in every game because I just can't stand it.

Story started off strong, but it gets watered down, like they wanted you to hook up but for the rest of the game you hope it will have such a strong punch but it never happens, this basically became a dopamine chaser. Comabt gets old pretty fast, because you just smash square button and kick out same bullet sponges over and over. I got Garuda element but it doesn't really contribute to anything. I tought there would be some elemental weakness or some tought behind it, but nope - just a new flashy way to hack and slash trough mobs.

More often than not, I feel like game forces me into "Jesus take the wheel" mindset during epic battles. This mechanic was supposed to be the most epic in the game, that makes me want to jump out of my skin from excitement, but instead I drench it because I become a passive observer with ocassional QTE reminder that echoes Netflixes "Are you still watching?" There is waaaay to much cut scenes and with that many cut scenes you expect to know what is going on and who is who in every given time, but I find myself pulling out "Active time lore" more often than not, because there is too much kingdoms, dutchies and what not to keep track off. It feels thrown out and not fleshed out how its supposed to be fleshed out. Witcher is an example where you clearly know at any given time who are the "baddies and good guys" without suffocating the flow of the story.

I recently finished DIablo 4, and even Diablo had more fleshed out story and "who and why's", Even Diablo has more open map and world. honestly can't wait to finish this and jump back in Diablo.

Don't even consider getting this game if its not on some major sale, You will not get Final Fantasy expirience at all and you will be disappointed once more at how a huge respectable company can massacre belowed franchise because they are greedy or bored or don't even know in which direction they want to go anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After doing all the sidequest and main mission. I can say that this game needed more time through its concept. It has the right ideas but poorly executed. You can still have fun but that fun will deteriorate as soon as half way through. Most of the abilities you obtain are gatekeep by point system in that you can obtain by gaining reputation points by doing side quests in which most are so boring.

    Pros:
    - scenery/graphics
    - cinematics
    - world building
    - combat ( Although it gets so easy you almost don't need to use health regenation)
    - Boss battle are really cinematic.
    - Music slams. Only thing in this game that is perfect. Headquarter music was soothing. Fighting sequence is good. Everything is good in each section.
    - Voice acting is good

    Cons
    - Side character development is trash. No talking in between. Silent. Jill especially. It's silent in between cinematic. The most development they had was through side quest that will most likely be missed because of how poorly structured most of the side quests are. People will most likely miss it.
    - Combat is way too easy.
    - Side quest are too much like a worse version of a ubisoft side quest until you get to the late game in which you wrap up each character focus quest. It's get this, get that. I need help and this wouldn't be a problem if the combat was so easy. Each mission takes 1 minute combat and a bunch of talking.
    - chest that I notice that drop something good is one. Most of the time, they were materials that can be gained elsewhere
    - exploring is redundant in that most of the section are explored via quest but the things you loot is literally 10 gil. Most of the items except consumables are 10k plus. Although this is negated with the hunt system in which you hunt beast that either give you upto 20k gil and materials for legendary weapon/armor/gloves
    - Weapons are cosmetics that provide only attack/defense upgrade. The special weapons do not have any special effects. Atleast add special effects if the weapons is crafted by titan material for example
    - The torgal system should have included more characters. For example, up d pad could either be jill/torgal/etc. You can input which character are "controlled" in which could have mediated that fact that there isn't a party system.

Thoughts that I really did not mind
    - Some people want more rpg elements but that's fine with what they are trying to build. It's an action-adventure game.

One of the most emblematic sagas in the videogames industry, has risen from the ashes with this new installment, Final Fantasy XVI. My time and experience with the game has been an amazing roller coaster of emotions. Presenting a very accurate narrative and storytelling to levels of a high-films productions. A story that hooks you into, wanting to know more about the characters, the world, the environment, their actions, everything, all of this presented in cutting-edge, crispy and crystal-clear visuals. By moving even away from their traditional combat system, FFXVI brings us a much more real time system, with different skills that you get during the course of the game, that allow you to make incredible combos later on, combos, that you wont be able to put the controller down. Following up the combat, FFXVI has the most adrenaline inducing boss fights EVER, created in the series. A bit downpoint is of course the lack of the classic party-member system, but, i think its just because for the sake of the story flow, but there are some members that help you during the course of the game. The epic soundtrack is composed by the great Masayoshi Soken. Every battle, every scenario, every part of the story, has epic orchestral pieces, which is, in short, a delicacy for our ears. FFXVI is the game I was waiting for. I recommend it.
