This "game" has only the looks of a a diablo game, there is no real gameplay or endgame that keeps players to enjoy it. The live service and mmo light is just there to sell you more crap from the real money only store, also they gut your progress every 3 month and force you to play seasons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story is good and well voice acted. The gameplay had potential but the patch prior to season one is a massive misstep. It's made the good things worse than they were and done little to address the bad things. As it stands I wouldn't recommend anyone getting the game. The cost is too high in comparison to the content. The updates are aimed more at causing players to spend more time playing for less rewards than they are at improving upon the player experience. Issues in particular:

Quests still bugged from launch. Helltide costs increased. Helltide cinders drastically reduced. XP reduced massively. Tier 3 and 4 are both now level gated. Rewards reduced in every area. Group content has been devalued. No group finder. No stash tabs. Not enough inventory space. Resistances don't work and haven't been fixed. Player damage nerfed. Player defense nerfed. I'm sure I'm probably missing stuff. As it stands this feels more like an open beta with the developers scrambling to try and fix what they can to meet deadlines that the game will never be ready for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Blizz had a good game, then it ruined season 1 with patch 1.1.1.1 and lost me as a player.

The game was playable before the patch, and mostly fun, although fans asked on forums for many things to be improved.

These include more unique variety that enable more build options

    Better drop rates for unique

    Better storage management Better mounts

Buffs to certain aspects other than critical dmg to enable us to attack in more ways than just relying on crit and vulnerable , because all other mechanics were extremely underpowered.

Instead blizzard devs fixed none of the complaints, and just straight up ruined the two stats that made this game playable, crit and vulnerable.

    Sorc is now DOA

    Necro and is no better

And the rest of the classes aren't getting any favors from the unnecessary nerf either.

So unless these changes get reversed and blizzard actually starts to improve the game rather than ruin it, I will not be playing diablo 4 at its current state.

Get your head into the game blizzard or the community you're working hard to build will collapse imminently.

Blizzard has dropped some bad games on us before but at least they were some what fun. The biggest thing in an ARPG for me is the loot. In D4 you get the same loot from level 1-100. Putting “sacred” in the name of the gear is truly an illusion that you are getting different gear. Its all the same except the stats can roll a little bit higher. The campaign was not the greatest imo. Most of the quests were annoying especially the desert escort quest that we all know we hated lol. The opening cut scene got me hyped for the story but it was definitely boring for a story about good vs evil. Skills in the game are okay, they could add more things to modify skills in different ways which D3 I think did a good job of. You could completely change how skills worked/interacted in D3 and it made the skills less stale, should have done that for D4 as well. Monster level scaling needs to go from any game ever. It ruins the feeling of leveling up and at that point why even have levels in the game to begin with? The skill tree could not have been done in a more boring way. There is very little choice and you just end up choosing the few passives that actually work with your skill of choice instead of making any decisions about what would work best for you. Sorc class is criminal for this. Blizzard has some how made legendaries feel bad when they drop, basically a glorified rare item with aspects that dont change how you play your character in the slightest. I didnt mind the stash tabs they had given us but hearing that they messed up so badly on loading everyones stash tabs is just so crazy, id expect that from maybe an indie dev but even then wtf???? The devs are also obsessed with this thing called “balance.” I truly think trying to achieve balance in a pve game is asinine. No one is going to remember a balanced game because then everything is just going to feel the same and not as fun. You dont remember cool items or skills from D2 because they were balanced… Last thing, the open world may be one of the worst decisions they could have made for a diablo game. It ruined the formula and now there is no formula in D4 you basically run around any where like a mindless drone because every thing scales and feels the same no matter where you go in the world. Not to mention the world itself is super super bland. Theres not one cool or fun or even different area in the game. This is the type of game I would expect from a small dev studio making their first ARPG ever. Instead this is what we got from the billion dollar company that has made 4 diablo games and have 20+ years in the ARPG market. Not to mention a Diablo game that doesnt even have DIABLO in it. Game probably would have been better received if they called it Litllith or any thing else. Dont play this game unless you LOVE being bored. Expand

If you are looking for an aRPG where you feel powerful, with amazing gear and loot, rewards for your long grinding and an amazing and exciting end-game, do NOT buy Diablo 4.

    Specific problems with this game:

    1. Gear. You will get so much gear. 99.99 of it will be useless. You will go 10 or more levels without finding anything better. The affix system means there are so many stats and the chances of getting anything to match your build is very low. After level 85 (or even before), there is no better gear and therefore no reason for most players to keep grinding as there is no reward.

    2. You will constantly be the underdog. Just as you start to feel powerful you will move up a world tier or more nightmare dungeon levels and wondered what happened.

    3. Crowd control. You will, especially in the end game, be constantly stun locked, frozen, dazed, knocked down and poisoned. Poison damage in this game if OFF THE SCALE. Most builds have 1 skill with one use to get out of this and it has a cooldown.

    4. Boring. The end game, and, indeed, the entire game is simply boring. You will do the same dungeons and events over, and over, and over and over again for little or no reward. All of the dungeons in the game are based on 8 or so styles, all have very similar layouts and all have almost identical sections and goals.

    5. Forgetful enemies. Every single enemy type in this game, right up from a lowly hedgehog to the biggest elite enemy of any type can have the same attacks, spew fireballs, throw poison, teleport, cold, etc. They all blend into a sense of sameness.

    6. The horse is terrible, with bad cool downs and it gets stuck everywhere. You can actually run faster with some builds.

    7. Combat is a mess of colourful explosions and crowd control effects and a screenful of enemies. Somewhere in there is you, it's like find wally. You will struggle to see the worst attacks coming because there is so much crap on screen.

    8. Combat is boring. Almost all builds are simply attack with basic skill, build up resource, attack with core skill and use other skills as and when cooldowns are over. Most of the time with my druid I just stand still holding core skill down until everything dies, popping the occasional cooldown skill. That's it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Diablo 4 is like Diablo 3, but without the fun. I stopped playing around 20-30 hours in.

On the positive side. The graphics are way better and the cut scenes are excellent.

On the negative side, here were my issues:

    1. The world is boring. Visually, and as an experience it's just endless identical dreary landscapes and dungeons. Diablo 3 had so much more variety in places, like the levels when you are in a besieged castle, in Heaven, and so on.

    2. The campaign is boring. It is mostly chasing the bad guy from one place to the next, finding out she already left and you need to go somewhere else. When you add the fact that all those places are visually boring... it feels like you are waiting for something to happen. Again compared to the story in D3 which was epic. I mean, you got to heaven and it was being invaded by hell.

    3. They took out the thing I really like about Diablo 3- finding that one piece of gear that makes your build work and increases your damage exponentially. That was glorious, and it allowed you to do things like farming and speed runs. D4 doesn't seem to have things that make this difference, and the enemies scale with you so you are getting gear just to keep up. Overall it makes combat slow and grindy.

Overall, the game feels monotonous, dreary and a huge grind.

I know everyone is complaining about the season pass thing and the patch. I don't care about the season pass and I stopped playing before the patch. But from what I understand, they made the game even slower and more grindy. Wow.

Fast forward to day before S1. Global xp nerf. Global defense nerf. Global damage nerf. What?! Prior to this patch, my level 100 rogue was clearing Tier 50-55 nightmare dungeons easily. I could push to 60, but that was sketchy and I died a lot. Post patch I try the lowest tier NM I have on hand: 51. I die 4x and am kicked out of the dungeon within 3 minutes. Wow. I crafted and tried a 45 next. Died twice and barely made it through. I don’t get it. I’m not pushing tier 100 and crushing it easily. I haven’t even killed Uber Lilith yet. Sure, I play 20-25 hrs a week, but I’m by no means elite. I only have a single 100 character. The game became objectively less fun. For what?

I speculate that the team that worked on Season 1 realized their content wasn’t well balanced and wouldn’t keep players engaged for 3 months, and instead of addressing the issues in the season, they simply slowed down the game and made it harder. Meh.

Repetitive gameplay and a tedious grind with little rewards. The developer has implemented patches to make the grind longer and harder via nerfs that they claim as game balances.Wasted my money, Don't buy if you have not. There are more worthy games that deserve your money and time. Try Baldur's Gate 3 or Amour Core 6.

Leveling is a slog, getting upgrades is not as rewarding as in previous diablo releases, and the scaling ruins my feeling of "getting more and more powerful".

Before the game even came out, i was very annoyed by yes, A PREDATORY, practice of charging 20 dollars extra for early access with a hardcore race behind it to FOMO consumers. Anyone who doesn't think this is a scummy, predatory practice is a corporate shill.

Campaign was extremely easy. I played a TB Rogue. The scaling world felt as though as completely side quests, strongholds, or farming dungeons was pretty meaningless as the scaling would just diminish that effort. So I just went straight through the campaign only to be extremely underleveled when fighting Lillith cause apparently that just didnt scale for some reason? I fought her at level 36 or 37, still one shot it because the game is very easy. Overall, the story, voice acting, and graphics were good but it was boring gameplay. I'd give the campaign a 6/10. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't Halo 2 on Legendary.

The combat is more of the same as the last versions of Diablo and in some ways worse. You only have 6 abilities, 4 of the Barbarians spells are nearly essential lock-ins for buff, then you need one builder and one spender. This is across every build Barb has to offer. You press two buttons with some buffs. One you level up you can almost drop your spender because your shouts generate all your rage but most still keep it just in case. You really can't really afford to take leap, charge, steel grasp or anything fun really. Just buff, build, then spend. Was pretty silly that my D2 Barbarian had more spells to use than my D4 barbarian. I haven't played PoE and quit D3 probably after a month or playing it because the RMAH. However, it is crazy to me that in 23 years, I have less abilities in a game to use that is a ARPG. Combat for me is easily a 1/10, I can't imagine a worse action game then pressing 1 combat ability 95% of the time. This was acceptable 20 years ago, not now.

The gearing system leaves a lot to be desired, its not terrible so to speak but there are glaring issues. Nearly every build prioritizes Vulnerability, Crit, Crit %, and CDR. Resists are utterly useless. Gems have no use beyond your first 10 royals. Acquiring the gear is best done by doing half of a dungeon then resetting the dungeon. This makes for a very repetitive and unfun game loop of pressing one button for two minutes then reset and do 20s of load screens. I'd give gearing a 5/10.

The dungeon system was terrible. There are 100s of dungeons to do but you really should only do 2-3 because they are SO far ahead in terms of XP per hour you are wasting your time if you are not. Not to mention, most dungeons are crazy similar in their mechanics (kill all mobs, bring two boxes to holders, etc.) and end bosses of dungeons are pretty lame. Nightmare dungeons were a bit more fun cause the scaling made them more difficult but the rewards just aren't there to justify doing them. I'd give this a 3/10.

The world content varied greatly. Strongholds were amazing. Statues of Lilith / Renown grind was an insane grind and not very exciting outside Strongholds. World bosses were a complete joke. Side quests were mediocre, not much there. The horse is really bugged and the CD on it was kind of annoying. I'd give the outdoor content a 5/10.

Overall I give the game a 4/10. In my opinion, the developers really need to address the gameplay first and foremost. Barbarian was extremely boring and only having 6 abilities to use is such a disservice to modern games. If they fixed the vehicle im traversing the world through, doing dungeons and world content would be much more enjoyable. I think the game has a decent base to build off of, but is it worth 70 dollars, not now in my opinion.

Towns are generic and enemy types are very limited. Open world is done terribly and you have absolutely no initiative to interact with other people. Characters phase in and out at seemingly random and monsters appear out of thin air. The movement when mounted feels weird and unresponsive. Itemization is on par with D3 itemization at launch.

On the plus side, graphics are top notch, combat feels good and the community figured out some very clever and fun builds. The feeling of accomplishment after you get a working powerful endgame build is still as great as always.

I had some hope that D4 could become a decent game with enough time and love from the developers, but the recent 1.1 patch shows that they are completely out of touch, arrogant and I doubt many even play their game. They are making nonsensical changes just to make progression slower. The patch made many builds either completely non functional or much slower, while addressing none of the bugs and concerns of the community. This is the only patch of a game, that actually made me angry and makes me consider quitting the game. I am sitting out season 1 for sure.

Based on the positives and potential I would have rated the game 7/10, but after the recent patch I can't give it more than 4/10. Would be fine if it was 20 bucks game.

But after that it just falls flat. The three activities for "endgame" - whispers, Helltides and NM dungeons are extremely repetitive. And only one, NM dungeons was worthwhile - for leveling, "loot" and glyphs.

The loot itself is subpar and you can get equipment that is completely useless on the highest difficulty of the game (World Tier 3 equipment on Tier 4). The ability to reroll or tweak your gear is hampered by extremely high costs that increase per re-roll. Which forces you to go broke or go beat your head against the wall for a new drop or resources.

Early adopters of the game got to have fun before patches and mostly nerfs entered. I started playing end of June 2023. The game was pretty fun and i was ignorant to the previous nerfs. I didn't bother looking at the changes because the game itself felt fun. Slow and meticulous - but fun.

For reference, I have a level 90 sorcerer. And was stoked to be working my way up to higher nightmare dungeon tiers. I just got into the 40s and really digging the pace of grinding with teleport chest piece.

And then enter the July 18th patch that made the game feel so bad. In the same day, your ability to do difficult activities was heavily diminished. The power fantasy, revoked for many high end builds. And a major nerf to sorcerers - what the community and content creators all agree to be the weakest class. Call me bitter, but to nerf the class and give it useless uniques was a double dipping of punishment.

Which brings me to creating new builds. After some research, i learned that saving builds was once a one click feature in Diablo 3. Even Destiny 2 managed somehow to piece it together in game (after years of community resources external to the game pulled it off).

Get your candy and caffeine ready, as you sink time into manually undoing every node on your paragon boards. And slowly reinvent you skill tree chain. Because the July 18 2023 nerfs will have you doing just that.

If player retention is the goal, shouldn't it be fun? I was debating playing season 1 - but I just don't think its worth the time. Starting from step one is slow enough, but to kill the pace by nerfing the player into the ground - its just too much.

While the Diablo series has long been revered for its immersive gameplay and thrilling class dynamics, it seems that the developers have taken an inexplicable turn in Diablo 4, resulting in a disappointing game that feels unnecessarily tedious and lackluster.

One of the most glaring issues in Diablo 4 is the developers' consistent nerfing of classes, which directly impacts the overall enjoyment of the game. What was once a game that boasted diverse and powerful characters now feels like a struggle to make any meaningful progress. It is bewildering why the developers have chosen to strip away the very essence of what made each class engaging and unique, stifling the joy that came from becoming an unstoppable force of destruction.

Furthermore, the gameplay mechanics in Diablo 4 feel like an outright chore, rather than an engaging and exciting adventure. The repetitive nature of the quests and lack of variation significantly hinder the player's ability to immerse themselves fully in the game world. Instead of presenting thoughtful and challenging quests, Diablo 4 bombards players with dull and uninspiring tasks, draining the enjoyment from what should have been an exciting gaming experience.

In addition to the nerfing of classes and repetitive gameplay, it is disheartening to see Diablo 4 lack the depth and complexity that once made the franchise so captivating. The intricate skill systems and character progression, which were once hallmarks of the series, have been watered down to a frustratingly simplistic level. This reduction in complexity not only limits player agency but also removes the sense of accomplishment that came from mastering intricate class synergies and strategies.

It is deeply disappointing to witness a game that was once celebrated for its vibrant and dynamic gameplay transform into a mundane and lackluster version of its former self. Rather than building on the legacy of the franchise, Diablo 4 feels like a step backward, as the developers seem to have lost sight of what made the series so beloved in the first place.

In conclusion, Diablo 4's unfortunate devolution into mediocrity stems from its baffling decisions to nerf classes and consistently deliver monotonous gameplay experiences. The developers' choices have resulted in a game that lacks the depth, complexity, and exhilaration that was once the series' trademark. Only time will tell if the developers will take note of the community's feedback and reignite the spark that once made the Diablo franchise shine.

Ultimately, I hope the developers reconsider their approach and strive to deliver a game worthy of the Diablo legacy in future installments. Until then, it is a challenging recommendation to invest one's time and energy into Diablo 4, given the frustrations and disappointments it presents.

boring slow progress made even worse in last patch, ignorant team looking to profit only
bugs from beta still in the game while they fix anything in a blink that would make them lose money

Lots of walking around not killing monsters. Loot feels off. Worst ARPG experience I've had.

There's a fair bit to like about Diablo IV — best-in-class sound design, intriguing character classes, fantastic graphics and occasionally addictive gameplay all feel like the series in its prime. However, even the best parts are let down by an undercurrent of frustrating design choices: the cynical inclusion of a Battle Pass, a bloated open world, repetitive mission structure and progression that too often feels meaningless cast a long shadow that let the latest Diablo title down. Future Seasons may refine what's here, but many of its issues sadly feel baked into the core experience. All but the most die-hard fans may wish to wait for a substantial sale on this one.

The visuals are probably what excited me the most. The way the game looks and the atmosphere makes me feel like I'm playing the old Diablo again. On steroids and on a quadruple screen TV, but the feeling is still there. [Issue#328]

Diablo is back, and taking no prisoners. The top-quality, lengthy campaign will be enough for some, while the endgame should prove a welcome obsession for others. [Issue#30, p.84]
