The Last of Us 2 has probably been one of the most polarizing games of the last decade. Naughty Dog takes a risk with their story telling in this latest installment of their post-apocalyptic IP. Gone are the formulaic yet entertaining stories as seen with the Uncharted series; no, in this sequel we get to explore the stages of grief one goes through when encountered with a tragic loss, and the effects they have on themselves and their loved ones.

    Brief Description:

Ellie’s story in The Last of Us 2 is one of grueling pain, suffering, and ultimately revenge. As her journey progresses, her insatiable lust for revenge grows stronger, throwing away her humanity with each life she takes. We’re also introduced to the character Abby, whose journey echoes Ellie’s. Both characters have experienced a lot in this unforgiving world, and ultimately it’s up to the player to figure out the right and wrong of the actions made by the two, if this is even possible. The moral ambiguity presented in this story makes it difficult to root for a hero, but this is the way Naughty Dog challenges you to view it, and form your own opinions about the story they told. Story:

While I enjoyed the 25 hours I put into this game , I did a couple issues which prevented me from giving it a higher score. The story on paper is very interesting, however translating it to a game can be difficult. While I appreciate the parallels the game made with flashbacks for both Ellie and Abby; the execution and timing interrupted the flow of the narrative. The pacing of the game as a whole suffered due to the inclusion of the scenes, albeit they were necessary to flesh out the characters and revisit old relationships. Gameplay/Visuals: The gameplay was very much similar to the original game; however, it’s clear that the developers took the time to perfect this gameplay loop and make it as enjoyable as possible. Visually the game is stunning, and running on my old PS4 still manages to hold a constant and smooth 30 FPS. No issues to be had here. In addition, the fan noise produced by my OG PS4 was not as bad as I initially had thought it would be. Much quieter when compared to other taxing games such as God of War, and AC Odyssey. It’s worth noting that I had cleaned my PS4 recently, and replaced the thermal paste (may have helped somewhat).

    Wrapping Up:

Overall, this game does a lot of things right. If you go into it with an open mind, a decent understanding of empathy and other basic human emotions, you’re in store for a masterful piece of storytelling.

Bold, challenging & thought-provoking. Last of Us Part 2 doesn't care about providing you with a fun fan service sequel and goes in places that some fans of the original may dislike.
I suggest anyone just passing through here, ignore the hate, ignore the positivity, you owe it to yourself to play it and make up your own mind.

The Last of Us 2 set out to ask one question: "Why is your violence more justified than mine?" and as I saw the credits roll I came to realize that everyone at NaughtyDog did a stellar job at answering it.

This game isn't just a great piece of entertainment, it's a necessary one.
No game is perfect but aside some pacing and side content issues this one is very close to it.

You can tell from reading most of the negative reviews that they are driven by a certain agenda (most obviously didn't play the game and just read up facts from the Wikipedia entry). They try to make this not too obvious by constructing fake arguments for their negative downvotes ("This game has plot holes... the character design is terrible...") Quite telling by the comments that claim Abby to be the Transgender character of the game... Yeah. Surprise. She isn't.
By all means TLOU2 is not a perfect game (it has some slog in the middle and could have been streamlined). But what it is, is still an amazing achievement. Character design, the level of detail, the intelligence of the AI - that's all top notch and unprecedented until now (RDR2 comes close second). As for the story: What other way could there have been? What did people expect? The further adventures of Joel and Ellie? A retreat of the same story - just with better graphics? The first game was based around "the things you do for love". The second takes this sentiment and turns it around. It is "the things you do out of hate". And - at least for me - it worked. It turned Abby from Ellie's Nemesis and a brute killer into a person that you can actually root for (at least understand her motives).
Of course, if you want your stories not challenging and clean cut, this is probably not for you. TLOU2 follows more in the vain of "Game of Thrones". And people complaining were probably also wishing that the latter was Ned Stark vs. Ice Zombies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Genuinely mediocre game, I thought throughout the first half it was a masterpiece and then the **** plot of "revenge bad" came up and the game tries to make you sympathize with a character that it just set up as a villain, rewriting the end of the first game changing the African doctor in a broken down and dirty hospital room who had questionable intentions to the white guy who saves zebras and just want to save the world in a super clean and sterile room.
The previous game continually points to the Fireflies being incompetent terrorists but Joel needs to deliver Ellie even if it's not likely to get a cure. Turns out for some reason the Fireflies are so incompetent that they can't make a cure unless they kill her and neither she or her father-figure got told that. Joel would have had all his weapons and supplies taken and him being escorted to the edge of the city to fend for himself with NOTHING. Being unable to go on without her and having his daughter taken away from him the second time he couldn't handle it and saved her. I don't remember where but the game implies there were many other immune people who have already been killed by the Fireflies.

TLOU2 made Joel's ambigous personal choice to save a daughter-figure after he couldn't save his own daughter into just Joel being the villian that ruined everything for everyone and he deserved to be tortured and killed infront of his brother and daughter-figure. And the worst part is Ellie never forgave Joel for lying to her, Abby's crew took away that from her and she's angry. At that point the players are emotionally invested in Ellie's grief and we're encouraged to get revenge, but nope halfway through you just stop playing as her and play as Abby for THE REST OF THE GAME, helping your enemy and the game throwing in random stuff to make you sympathize with her, playing with dogs, ushering children to school, taking care of a pregnant woman is all just cheap ways to make you like her.

Manny is a womanizer who's banging 3-4 different women telling them he's the only one for them, and then starts hitting on Abby, Mel is just an **** in general making Owen cheat on Abby to be with her instead, Nora and the 2 other guys are ****s for trying to kill Ellie and so on and so forth.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I see all the people saying that they hate playing as Abby and they despise her. I understand them, she killed Joel in a horrible way, like a monster. I wasn't thrilled to play as Abby also and I was very mad at her and wanted to see Ellie kill her brutally, the same way she did to Joel,
but when you get to know her and listen to her story and her perspective of the world it makes you empathize with her. Because Joel killed two things for her 1) Her dad (in a very brutal way, I believe that he could just push him away or knock him out, and not shove a syringe down his throat) 2) Any hope for a vaccine/cure for the infection, and hope for a better world, a saved world.
All that just so he won't lose Ellie, which, became like a daughter for him. I understand why he did it but I really didn't agree with it. So I can understand Abby, not agree or justify her actions, but understand them. This game is way more complex then good-evil/wrong-right/Villain-hero
I think its a beautiful game and it has a really awesome gameplay mechanics and overall very fun game to play and get into it. I'm not giving it 10/10 because It failed to connect me to the characters and really empathize with them as the first one did. And I didn't get emotional with this game like the first game. I believe that many of the deaths in this game were not dealt with, and you didn't feel anything for them because the player didn't show any emotion to their death (Manny/Jessie ) and just forgot about them. Unlike the first game, Tess's death does have an impact on Joel's and Ellie's journey. Maybe not a huge one, but they don't just brush it away, they tend to it and Ellie tries to talk about it. I think that the meaning and impact of death were lacked in the second game. Other than that its a beautiful and amazing game. 9/10

i loved this game from start to finish. First of all, the game-play is extraordinary. The stealth mechanics blew my mind. I am glad they fixed the bow aiming system. The visuals are breathtaking and I couldn't stop using the photo mode to capture all my favorite moments.

The story took us deeper into this post apocalyptic world. i really wanted more exploration of this world that naughty dog had created in part 1. I am glad I got to see that. The story-line is definitely darker, more brutal and unpredictable. I am that this game took me on a different path. It made me question my decisions. Whatever steps I took I felt i was synced with the character I was playing because I understood where they were coming from.

In the end I will say, I was satisfied and in the need for more. It's an original story. It's not based on a book or anything. It was made from scratch. That eliminates the element of predictability. I can't wait for Part III. The story can be summed by one of the best dialogues in gaming history, "Revenge is a fools game" - Arthur Morgan.

As a player, I've never been so excited to finish a game to see how it ends, but at the same time, as the final approaches, I get more and more sentimental and sad. Emotional chaos is wanted from a plot point of view. Overall, a very good job of Naughty Dog as they manage to convey feelings in this game.

The plot idea in this game, paired with the breathtaking setting, the ingeniously used zombies, and the perfectly realistic dialogues and facial expressions, really inspired me from the first moment in the game. There is no comparable story I played with similar plot twists so far.

It begins with a scene with Tommy, the brother of Joel, and Joel himself. The dialog is a minimalist hint where the journey could lead to plot-wise.

The creators shed light from other perspectives on Joels decision to rescue Ellie from the Firefly researchers. It was already clear in the first TLOU that due to his previous history, Joel might have acted selfishly. All shades of gray will be needed to explore the good and the bad within TLOU2.

It is developing a masterful drama, which grabbed me immediately. The ultra-realistic dialogues mentioned above are an important point. Every, and I mean every spoken sentence makes sense and is on point. It's bizarre how good the story is advanced by the cutscenes. A grand manifesto is revealed to the player the further he follows this story, which also has the best facial animations in the whole PS4 game history.
In one sentence: The most human game ever for the PS4.

In a game that is also told by flashbacks, I always had the feeling that I was already or very close to the finale and was still more fascinated that the story continued elegantly. And if you think you are finished, you are not finished. And when you think you're at the end, it goes on;). Loved all the twists.

The design that is the all-around depressing mood, especially in buildings contaminated with spores, is just top-notch. My request, take your time to explore the area and let the scenery affect you here and there. Worth it. Rarely has a game brought the mood and the environment or landscape so well into harmony.

Unlike Uncharted, TLOU2 takes itself completely seriously. It's a cinematic drama through and through. So it is actually clear that the characters are not equipped with adventurous moves or weapons. Everything is perfectly reduced, the skills of the characters fit very well into the setting.

The choice of skills and combat items are well thought out. Sneaking and shooting must be skillfully used to withstand larger waves of opponents. Every now and then you get a mostly nice introduction in a very well built-in tutorial. Over time, the fighting techniques should be mastered so that the more difficult opponents can be stopped at battlefields. To put it simply, there are only three game mechanics: Stealth - Fight - Explore.

Most sections are perfectly balanced. It always remains breathtakingly exciting. The gameplay is ideal for perfectionists because, with a little practice, the character can be moved damn realistic creeping, crawling, running, throwing, hitting and shooting across the field, so that everything looks like an action-packed stealth film. The movements especially during the fight, the change between weapons and the many possibilities to use hiding places and cover give the combat system a big variation. I really enjoyed facing all kinds of opponents in combat.

Of course you have amazing visuals and environments and fantastic soundtrack, but then again - subpar and monotonous gameplay, genuinely insulting to fans of the previous title and a perfect example of clichéd, frustrating, uninteresting and quite frankly abysmal storytelling sent on a completely unrelated tangent to the previous title. Joel and Ellie don't actually interact in the present storyline at all, only through flashbacks - which are the only decent sections of this mess, so fans of the dynamic from the previous game will be severely disappointed.

Everything built and developed from it's master-crafted predecessor is thrown away in this horribly written, needlessly grim waste of time.

Quick run through, manly looking girl kills straight white male, lesbian goes for revenge, manly girl finds friendship in trans boy(girl to boy), then another straight male gets killed, another straight white male left unable to fight. Unable to decide if team lesbian or team trans should win, they decide we will take away the lesbians ability to do 2 in the goo 1 in the poo and let them all live because LGBTQ agenda plot armor. This game literally had some good parts but the clear female empowerment agenda is in this game. All men are jerks and bigots, and woman are the best. The 1st game was a masterpiece, this game just takes a load all over it. And no, no one wanted to play as the person that killed their main character from the last game, that is such a stupid idea. I get they wanted us as an audience to see the enemies point of view, but I'm sorry, I don't want to hurt or chase after the people I grew to love in the first game. Soooo, thanks for that... however, I did enjoy the idea of what happens when you become consumed in revenge you will end up with nothing. As Ellie, Literally lost everything, and was unable to have her closure with Joel because of Abby, but she had her chance, didn't take her revenge (because plot armor) that costed her to lose everything. So leaves the question, what's the bloody point of this game? Expand

about 10 hours into the game, I think I have a fair idea how to rate the game. The graphics and animations are excellent. The motion capture and performance, great. The gameplay however, is quite repetitive and not really different from TLOU part 1. The jump button is over-hyped.

Back to the story. The story is mehhh. typical revenge story with an ending that will make you go WTF? Character development is weird.. And they became all so dumb and stupid in part 2. Why is Joel making bad decisions when he is a seasoned survivor?

Basically, if you asked me, "Do you enjoy playing this game?" The answer is, not really.. It's brutal, repetitive and the story does not make me feel good. So how am I going to "enjoy" this game? Compared to FF7 Remake which gave me laughs, nostalgia, emotional moments and great combat, I enjoyed FF7 WAY WAY more. That game gave me a good time and TLOU2 didn't.

Definitely not 10/10 like what the critic reviews are saying. Wanted to give it a 5 but the thought of how they killed off one of the characters pissed me the hell off, and it drops to 4

A plot that sounds like it was written by a 13 year old edge lord, with zero payoff and destroys every character you loved from the first game. A badly written revenge plot with no revenge. This is not Eliie and Joels story again, this isnt even Ellies story. its just a story, and a bad one at that.

New infected, especially the rat king feel out of place, it was actually in the concept art for tlou1 but they decided not to use it as they themselves felt it didnt feel very 'the last of us' and was more akin to the necromorphs of dead space, to me the lack of colour, the and design seems like it would be better suited in evil within 2 or one of the bad resident evil games. The shambler isnt as bad but still feels out of place, more like a l4d enemy.

Character inconsistencies that straight up insult and tarnish characters from tlou1, that change personality as and when the plot demands it

Very obvious that the characters were written around the plot.

Only positives ill give is the acting, graphics and a special mention for all the accessability settings they made for disabilities, never seen anything like it and its really cool.

With a boring story, simple characters, not interesting gameplay and awful visuals and audio, The Last of Us Part II is probably one of the worse videogame experiences out there and it’s pretty easy to give it a bad score and call it a day. Pacing suffers at times due to the huge duration of the game being 25 hours for most playstyles it could be easly cut down to 18 hours and still be ok. For the story I don't really get why people are so angry, review bombing, harassing actors and directors alike. It's just stupid and only showcases how immature we are as a community. For the story the idea of the cyrcle of violence can be found in every aspect of every character Abby's and Ellie's revenge how much they have lost in the process and how every action further drives them down a hole. Also for a game who handles so many characters it did and honorable job Lev being a great example for a sidecharacter that I genuinely cared. The idea of violence perfectly translates to the gameplay with some of the most raw and brutal combat you've seen in a video game. You can feel the impact in every hit and the pierce in every bullet and the carnage that the player can do. The atmosphere is also so well put, it never fails to evoke a feel of danger and hopelessness paired with some of the most jaw-dropping art direction. The only thing that the game really suffers is meaningful exploration, scrapping for supplies is ok but after the first few hours it feels repetetive. Instead of safes with more loot you could place artifacts that can trigger flashbacks of Joel and Ellie, that I think would modivate more players to search the environments. Overall the more I think about it the more I love it. I don't support the idea that you have to top the first game or give any fun service if it's the kind of story you want to tell. All the people at naughty dog believed in that story and I can respect that and I can also respect every one who played the game and didn't liked it. All an all I enjoyed the game and I applaud naughty dog for being bold with their vision.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is their story, not yours. Simple as that. Everyone is trying to suggest how the story should have been and how it should have ended but it isn't yours to tell. The world they live in is unforgiving and does not give chances to say goodbyes all the time and anyone could die at any moment, including the main characters which gives it the aspect of realism and logic to be honest. Even if I hated what happened to Joel, it still made sense that 25 years of his life after the outbreak was full of killings and murders that surely had to come back around somehow.

As the story goes, I found it to be very sensible for me. Again, no one is safe in that world and every action will have its consequences and that's why I get it, especially when I was introduced to the full story and the different perspective of the tale and letting me understand why exactly what happened has happened. Even though my feelings changed from the first scenes and the last ones towards certain characters, I was satisfied all the way and I couldn't see a different ending that will make sense.

But what was annoying for me a little bit is the pacing and going back and forth in the story which made me pay less attention to the order of the story.

As for the game play, visuals & graphics, voice acting, motion capture, soundtracks, sound design, level design and the littlest of the details; all I can say that they are all 10/10 and really one of the best graphics and sounds I have ever seen and heard in a video game so far. Game play was so fun and intense at the same time especially the stealth.

Thank you Naught Dog for that masterpiece.

Ok so let me start by saying that this game is a masterpiece in many things but still deserves the low score of 2. Why is that you might ask? Imagine, if you will, the most beautiful cake you have ever seen, imagine a piece of it on your plate and imagine the perfect taste that it will leave in your mouth when you eatOk so let me start by saying that this game is a masterpiece in many things but still deserves the low score of 2. Why is that you might ask? Well I will try to provide a metaphor for my problems with this game. Imagine, if you will, the most beautiful cake you have ever seen, imagine a piece of it on your plate and imagine the perfect taste that it will leave in your mouth when you eat it. Now deal with the reality that you will only get one spoonful of that cake and the rest of the cake will be replaced by trash picked up on the side of the road. If you would have to rate the perfect cake, it will be a 10, but the whole experience was kinda dreadful, therefore a 2.

So how did that happen? Well the graphics in this game are amazing, the atmosphere of walking through the world is breathtaking. The character animation is spot on, and there is even a scene where one of the characters removes a shirt over her head, perfectly without any clipping and perfect animation! This is insane! The music is just perfect and the sound design, from weapons to zombies to everything is truly great. Well what is the problem then? Easy: You are forced to play more than 50% of the playtime as one of the most unlikable antagonists I ever had to deal with. Bad writing in video games happens a lot, and I have learned to deal with it, but never have I been made to suffer through a bad story on the wrong side of the story. It is like getting bad with bad, and it is so bad, that at some point I just started running through the encounters because I wanted to be done with them. And this has nothing to do with Transgender or whatever. I couldn't care less about the Gender or lack thereof of any of the characters, I am talking about PERSONALITY here. I get what Naughty Dog was aiming for, trying to make me understand, trying to get my to sympathize, showing a different side to the story. But if the story is fairly one dimensional to begin with, it really doesn't help to force me to play it from a viewpoint that is so unlikable that I consider it a platinum trophy to just having finished the game.

So with that in mind, I cannot bring myself to give any better score than 2.

The perfect sequel. The story that had to be told.
The number of critics (good or bad) and all that buzz shows that they made the right choices.

Profoundly disappointed, the conversion of a great story in Part 1 into revenge porn and forced direction change in Part 2 is heartbreaking. Games like this are not just about graphics, they need purpose and engagement.

Записки, которые сохранились за 15 лет апокалипсиса? О, да. В общем, куча сюжетных и геймплейных несостыковок, даже как кинцо не зайдет Expand

Nothing compared to the first game, I recently played the first game for the first time and I was really excited to jump right into this one, I had no idea how disappointed I would soon be. Did they completely fire the original team and hire some budget hacks?

it's ma'am! Destroys the previous protagonists, has a terrible, boring story, has new unlikable characters nd spits on what fans loved about the first game.

I played it with my boyfriend, and we were disgusted how they treated some characters. And really as a gay, I found the relationship between Ellie and Dina so ridiculous and cringy at times Expand

Никакого желания играть за трансгендера нет и быть не может. Игра с красивыми локациями, очень похожа на первую часть. Графика в трейлерах была лучше, как мне показалась.

Graphically stunning, its technically a masterpiece. But the story and political views and the way the characters develop are enough to destroy this game. I am in shock on how bad they made some characters story line. Definitely not the sequel I was waiting for .

If you’re someone who feels entitled to a story because you payed 15 - 60 bucks for a game and liked it, then don’t play this game.
If you’re a homophobic bigot who “doesnt want politics in his game” then dont play this game.
If you read the leaks and didnt like what you read, actually play this game because playing it is not the same as reading it. If you like a rollercoaster story,

Also, I emplore everyone to play their 1st playthrough on Survivor difficulty, this game seems built for that.

Many many many games have being leaked before!!! For example Uncharted 4...Furthermore is not everybody who gives this game a 0 or 1 ultra conservative, i know im not. And yes i have played the game for many hours now its a sh... show and the biggest gaming disappointment of my life! Im almost 34... game of thrones season 8 aint sh.. ladys and gentelman. This is how ET fans must have fellt after the release of the legendary bad atari game. To be fair the only good thing that i can say is that the world and the gameplay are alright! I have no problems with LGBT ppl what so ever but in this game its force feed! A true abomination!S: playing as Abby can only be topped by playing Hitler, Stalin or Mao Zedong ... you get the point Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
