If you, like me, are a fan of the previous game, then please do yourself a favour and DO NOT play this one. It will tarnish your memory of even the previous game, which was a masterpiece. It isn’t even about the fact that it literally destroys your beloved characters from the previous game, but also because it is completely devoid of any charm that the storytelling of the previous one had. The plot here is so scatter-brained that I still haven’t found a way to summarise it. They just went with whatever had the most shock value in THAT specific moment. And that means characters will switch personalities and motives back and forth like a yo-yo. It doesn’t matter if it’s unnatural for a character to behave a certain way, if it provides a shock value, they’ll put it in. So don’t expect to form any kind of a meaningful relationship with any character (including a certain new one they keep forcing the players to play as, even though audience has no connection with said character, and the parts where you play as them seem extremely tedious) because even by the end of the game, you wouldn’t know exactly who they are as a person. Heck even Ellie, the main character of this game! The only form of connection you will feel with the character is because she was important to you in the first game, because in this one she is barely a shadow of her former self. And I won’t even get into all the injustices done to Joel’s character so lets just move on. The gameplay, well its the same old same old. Don’t expect to be blown out of the water in this category either. They did polish it up a bit, but at the end of the day, the combat and stealth aspects are just as they were in the previous game, which is to say, outdated. The graphics are really gorgeous no doubt, but its still not enough to carry the weight of this incredible failure of a game. After all, with the new generation consoles coming out, plus the already state-of-the-art graphics in most AAA titles these days, this isn’t something that’s gonna blow your mind either. So, all in all, bad game. Doesn’t even work as a stand-alone story, because its not memorable or even good, in any sense. Expand

The game can best be summarized as "misery porn" with graphics so realistic it will give you ptsd. The level of violence in the game is similar to a IRL snuff film. There is also an extremely graphic sex scene that made me want to gouge my eyes out. Neil Druckmann thinks hes Hideo Kojima when hes really just a washed up loser. Amy Henning was the real genius at Naughty Dog. I question if I will ever buy a Naughty Dog game ever again. Please, please do not buy this game. I can tolerate games that play out more like interactive movies, with long, drawn out animations for the sole purpose of "immersion". I myself like to play more narrative driven games when I'm feeling up to it. But when the story comes at the cost of everything else, you better make sure that your plot is worthy of being at the front and center of a 20 hours experience.

But when the story comes at the cost of everything else, you better make sure that your plot is worthy of being at the front and center of a 20 hours experience.

And in this case it is not. This isn't an understatement. The story of this game and it's character are some of the most putrid pieces of "entertainment" that I've laid my eyes upon this year. And the reason becomes quickly apparent as the game progresses.

This isn't a story. There is no vision behind this game. It exists as a political statement and serves no purpose beyond that.

Coming from someone who has enjoyed most of Naughty Dog's works for the past decade and a half, I never thought I'd see the day where they'd destroy the legacy of one of their most popular IP so quickly.

I can turn a blind eye to mediocre cash-grab sequels, but not to all out propaganda

Not beacuse of issues the media would like you to think. The story is an unchecked, **** by Neil. There is a reason allegedly 70% of ND has left due to creative differences since 2013 when the first game was made.

It's sad that the writers could not give them a better script. At times it feels like there could be something more to say that may be profound but all we get is a one liner or a joke that lands but almost ruins the mood the game tries to place you in. Then we get to the story. Single player games rely heavily on story elements. It tries to teach you ba lesson and forces you to hit yourself over the head with its forced morality. The themes it tries to portray are undone by the fact that a player has no agency in the choices thrust upon you. The writers are the puppet masters and your only option is to dance. And at the end they look to you and ask why did you do this. After playing I felt like the message that was being forced upon me did not coincide with the resolution of the game. Things felt contrived and as a result the game stumbled into a cautionary tale neglecting storytelling for pure shock. I would give this game a 4/10 .... but I also have to factor in outside influences in my score. The trailers were deceptive. They implied that some characters had a larger role. -1
Some characters were noticeably dumbed down so that they could make terrible decisions. They did not stay true to their portrayal on the first game. -1
The reviews from critics are congratulatory and defensive to such a controversial game and give glowing reviews to something that as a whole is not well thought out. It gives value to connived storytelling at the cost of upending the expectations of the player. It lauds the developers for bravery yet fails to call them out for forcing the story it wants to tell in such a weird and unnatural way. -1
All in all I hated this experience.

But he dies early in the game for no reason except poor story writing. What is the point of upsetting the fans? What is the point of subverting expections in the worse way possible? My only reaction is to be upset. The ultimate insult is that you have to play with abby and you are pushed to emphatize with her even though she is the ultimate villain. But unfortunately, the complete disrespect for fans of the first game is remarkable. It is not a continuation, it is just a complete destruction on the meaning of the last game, and everything it represents. I am very sad that the director forced an inclusion without any sense in this game, just to please the SJW who do not play this game. The given story doesn't miss any opportunity to portray him/ her as broken by the world, bitter, unloving and above all: unsympathetic. Instead of slipping into the skin of the second protagonist of the first game, you are forced to play with the antagonist. I can't imagine that anybody likes him/ her, but with every scene the game tries to emphasize his/ her good side, the whole thing happens so unbelievable, that the whole story actually becomes to a soap opera. No comparison to the ingenious first part. The actual gameplay is too repetitive and frustrating, I often had problems with the camera or the incorrectly working "X-ray view". Also, dodging in close combat, especially in hectic situations, is poorly solved. Other games have shown how it works better. Graphically, the game is excellent, but as the story currently stands, the game should have ended better with the first part. The rest however... oh man oh man... I am not even sure how to begin.

I can forgive killing main characters, I can forgive easy one-track stories, and I can forgive (a few) plot holes, as long as the main story and the choices have some kind of logic to it. I can even forgive playing the supposed antagonist (a psychopath by the way), or re-writing history. BUT extremely lazy writing, horrible character assassinations, coupled with really bad story I can never forgive.

However weird it may sound for a game several years in development; this game feels rushed. They did not have time to put in a good flowing narrative, they did not have time to check the dialogue, they did not have time to develop characters or write a compelling story. A game and a franchise which is all about the story, has a sequel which cares nothing about the story. Revenge is evil, circle of evil, and revenge is bad. Got it? Oh no? Let us remind you of this 100 times so you understand what this game is about - revenge is bad!
That is it? That is what you come up with after several years of writing and development?

I am not sure if this is the worst sequel of all time, but seeing how the first game was close to a masterpiece I have to conclude that The Last of Us II is the worst sequel of all time. There is absolutely no denying the astounding visuals that Naughty Dog delivers, despite being a Ps4 game it truly looks next-gen.

The performances are astounding, with an all-star cast of voice actors giving their absolute all.

Gameplay is another place where the developers have improved, although it isn't top tier, it's serviceable and has a little bit more to it than it's predecessor. The fighting animations are improved immensely, with brutality brimming from each hit. Looting and scouring the world feels like it has more of a purpose to it, but for the most part it's the same formula, with some minor, but noticeable improvements.

Sadly, this is where some of the issues start to pop up. We get some fantastic moments with familiar characters, but those drastically outshine everything else the game has to offer. Many people will end up feeling like this isn't actually a sequel to the first game, but more like it borrows the setting and some of the characters to tell a different story. The marketing comes off as a little deceptive, as it's made out to be more closely related to the original than it actually turns out to be. Aside from a few flashbacks and minor moments, the game is completely lacking the intimacy and charm of the first game.

The Last of Us was all about the story and the characters, while the sequel improves on visuals and gameplay, the story falls so short compared to the original that it's hard to imagine it being created by the same people. Characters that were once flawed, but relatable take drastic shifts and if it hadn't been for the visuals, could have just as easily been replaced with a completely different cast. It feels as if the story was made without the characters in mind and they were later pigeonholed into the story.

The most egregious part of this game is it's pacing. There are a lot of time jumps, which in and of itself isn't necessarily a detractor, but when parts of the game feels like hour-long detours from the actual story, it's hard to stay interested. By the time the main plot returns you're so far away and disconnected that it's hard to remember or care about what's going on.

The game also comes off as being at odds with itself. The core message being something along the lines of "violence breeds more violence and revenge won't satisfy you the way you might think". This isn't an entirely groundbreaking idea, but it's an alright basis for a story. The problem is that the gameplay doesn't at all reflect this notion. The developers go to great lengths to make you feel bad about certain actions and feel bad for certain characters, but as soon as the cut scene ends you're supposed to murder 15 enemies without feeling an ounce of remorse, so it ends up feelings like the theme is fighting the gameplay and the cut scenes and the gameplay are separate things entirely. Things only matter when it's convenient and push the story in the direction that the developers want, which in the end cheapens the whole message quite a bit.

The game is very selective about when you should feel certain things and when you shouldn't. It works hard to portray things as grey, not entirely bad or entirely good and where it ultimately lands varies wildly depending on the characters perspective. This is great, nuance is golden as far as I'm concerned. The problem is that certain things are portrayed completely as wrong or right, seemingly whenever the developer feels like it. It can come off as being told what to think, being told that this is right or wrong and disregarding any kind of nuance. It's nice in theory, but very poorly executed.

The Last of Us 2 is a technical marvel that looks and sounds astonishing, but the story and characters are a complete mess at times. Where the first game felt natural, this game ends up stumbling clumsily in it's delivery of what truly matters in a game like this, the story and the characters. As a standalone game it might do fine, but as a sequel to something so refreshing and beloved, The Last of Us 2 completely misses the mark.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2. First of all, I would like to warn you that my comment has spoilers (obviously). Second, I used Google Translate to convert my text to English. Therefore, perhaps the literal meaning may be altered. During the course of history, a monotonous gameplay is perceived and unattractive to the players. Unfortunately this applies in the story too, through Ellie's "revenge" which seems to have totally changed her personality. In fact, ALL the characters in the first game are not really them. Ellie often in the game seems to have bipolarity (nothing against those who have), like for example: before going out with Jess to go after Tommy, Ellie said she would do anything to rescue him, but a few minutes go by. the same character sets aside Tommy's rescue to "kill" Abby. In addition to Joel, a man who spent more than twenty years in this apocalyptic world, learning not to trust anyone, was killed in a ridiculous way, simply for believing in a stranger (Abby) who was running away from several infected. I don't care if Joel died, the important thing was to kill the character in a dignified way. The worst part is that the game forces you to play with Joel's killer, they could launch Abby's gameplay in a future DLC, so it didn't force the player to control her. This culminated in a horrible ending, after killing several people does Ellie think that not killing Abby would end the cycle of revenge? After everything she went through, including the death of Jesse / Joel, the loss of both fingers, among others. The game could have the option of the player himself to choose what to do, it would be better. Expand

TLOU2 completely ignores its central plot about a fungal virus, what would of been an interesting talking piece in midst of a real life virus pandemic is now put aside in favor of character backstories and LESBIUNSSSS.

There are attempts to make some kind of chemistry between these new characters but it almost always falls flat. I'm confused how even a sex/kiss scene fail to sell a relationship between them. Making a character gay, non-stereotype, big-nosed, ethnic, or a tomboy does not by default make them interesting.

Some segments from Uncharted wouldn't be engaging if not for the banter between Nathan and Sully. This is relevant as a whole lot of TLOU2 are padded stealth sections that don't have the same kind of interaction to entertain you. The only genuine character relationship is put to an end early on with no worthwhile replacement. This is so evident by the few flashback segments with Joel/Ellie which make a museum walking simulator fun.

Naughty Dog seem to have place its bets on the gameplay and new characters for the majority of TLOU2 and these are definitely not their strong suit.

But after finishing it, I honestly wonder how this game got such high scores everywhere. Obviously there is good things : the sound-design is very good, there are good atmospheres. The level-design is pretty good, and the gameplay, although a bit dated, does the job. The bestiary is also more varied. But, in my opinion, the story had no place to be, especially in view of the ending (but this point is quite subjective). Then, the rhythm of the game is atrocious, we are swung from flash back to flash back and we find ourselves frolicking for hours without anything happening. Many scenes were really unnecessary, even to just "make it truer". The craft system has not been improved and good ideas from the 1 have been removed (the knives limited to kill the infected). I really struggled to get to the end of the game since we are forced to follow someone uninteresting for hours and what's more, we do absolutely everything to make us love this person, it becomes ridiculous. To finish, the end of the game is risky but ineffective. The moral of the story has been seen and reviewed, and I find that in addition to that, it was not executed with flying colors, it is even the opposite. Too bad, TLOU2 had potential, despite positive it absolutely does not deserve so much high scores and it is by no means a masterpiece. The press should wake up and stop scoring games perfectly with so many negative points. Free to everyone called a masterpiece what he likes, but you have to be a minimum objective in the tests and stop distributing the perfect score to everything. Expand

People watching streamers play and complain their way through the game. Or people who played, got to the big early death and stormed off to write a review in the first two hours is what has given this game so many negative player review's.

However I believe Naughty Dog has crafted a beautifuly tragic story about the cost of revenge and discovering what it truly means to be human. I applaud Naughty Dog to sticking to their artistic vsion and not appeasing the fans like the recent Star Wars film has done.

The sound design, environments, combat dialogue and acting were some of the best I've ever seen in a video game. Accompanied by the veceral, authentic and out right tragic storytelling of Ellies revenge driven quest with the player truly feeling every action she makes alike beating nora to death or killing mel and discovering she's pregnant, you feel it as a player both in her pain and suffering each time.

When playing as Abby I **** hated it for the first hour or so calling back to joels death and what she did but as you play her you discover that she is just like Ellie. Living in a settlement full of people that love and respect her, friends that would die for her and selfless acts the redeem her as a character and reveal that she isn't some monster just someone that lost her father alike Ellie lost her father figure.

The sniper act during abbys game time was a perfect way of illustrating this dynamic, I felt myself getting really angry and honestly pissed at the sniper and after killing one of Abby friends I was furious before realising it was Tommy. It was at that moment I had a moment of clarity about the game that both Abbys and Ellies storys were profoundly the same and came to sympathize and recognize each of the characters humanity.

During the final act if the game where Ellie and Abby were fighting i didn't want either of them to win nor to lose, I had come to understand and respect each of the charters even for killing joel as we had killed all of Abby friends too.

And to have Ellie lose everything at the end of the game including Dina, Jesse, Tommy her 'son' and even her ability to play guitar along with joel in her mission of revenge was a profound but uniquely beautiful and symbolic way of climaixng part 2 of this series.

My only gripe with the game was possibly the structuring and longevity of the game. I would have much rather a tighter more cohesive story but other than that this is a worthy successor to it's counter part.

The only part I disliked was having to fight Ellie as Abby, which sucked and the first hour playing as Abby after the zoo, but I quickly stopped hating Abby that much after the kids Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, it started off at an 8. Halfway through the game it dropped down to a 5, crawled back up to a 6 and right up until the end it stayed there. It ended up a 10. I can't stop thinking about the ending.

It starts out amazing. (Killings included) it was a GREAT move. It takes a nosedive halfway through the game though, and it took me the rest of the game to realize it's narrative function. It's not plain cut and dry, it's a rollercoaster.

So gameplay: It's awesome, just as much as the first game. There are parts of which I would've liked to see way more of (like the open-world bit, turns out it's the only one) and it has some good variations on the old formula throughout the game. It can get pretty tedious after a while though, and due to some narrative choices, it takes a whole lot getting used to halfway through the game.

So the story. As you might have heard it's about revenge. But it actually isn't. It's about the feeling, the gnawing of it, the **** you go through for it, the guilt that sticks, how tiring it is. how it eats you up.

    SPOILERS:
The game does not have a pay-off in a general sense, it's not about getting what you want, it's about finding out that whatever you wanted, isn't what you want anymore. it's about being free from whatever it was that you held on to. The game's boring parts, the tediousness, the endless repetition, combined with genuinely great moments and storytelling, makes for a great platform to a pay-off that no game has ever dared to give.

Naughty Dog's approach is daring, ballsy, hard-fought. It's not a game for everyone because it's not traditional in most senses. It's subtle, it's rough, it's messy and it's a puzzle that fits way too damn well together.

So what I'm trying to say is: It's great, it might not be your cup of tea and that's fine. But the storytelling is amazing. One of the reasons that you might not like it, is because you're not used to the way it's been told. You'd be wrong to assume it's a Hollywood movie covered in ultra-violence.
It's the closest thing to a AAA title with art-house tendencies.

To me, it's one of the first games ever that knows how to manage storytelling within games as a medium in such a sense, that it elevates the medium instead of just copying movies.

This post probably will get buried because of disagreement, but I think it needed to be said. Naughty Dog knows what it's doing and does an amazing job. Don't knock what you don't understand. You don't have to like the game :) I'm heavily impressed and can't wait for part 3.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
