    Positive: Graphics, Gameplay, the E&J flashbacks

    Negative: the story, the new characters, the unsatisfying and stupid ending that devaluates everything you did in this game

    The fact that you are forced to play as A for 10-14 hours is insulting. I will NEVER preorder a naughty dog game again.

    Technically this game is well executed. The landscapes and sound quality is excellent, as is to be expected from a Naughty Dog game. The game loop is incredibly repetitive, I am not sure how anyone is expected to play this game more than once. While I am only some hours in I am already tired of the same old hackneyed hide, grab, and stab.

    The major negatives...where to begin, I suppose the story should be first up. This game is depressing... like I would recommend people avoid it if they have any signs of depression or anxiety because it might push you into a really bad place. There is virtually no hope or joy in the world to speak of, and whatever might be considered joy is dashed by character actions.
    This segues nicely into character problems. I was not as enamored by the original TLoU characters as some people were, but their motivations seemed logically consistent. Honestly what the hell is even going on with these Ellie, Joel, Abby? Joel is completely out of character in comparison to the original game. Ellie and Abby's deathmatch over the course of the game has done nothing for me either as it seems as they will never grow into fully formed characters, rather they will just perpetually be in a juvenile state of vengeance to the end of the game. It has already been spoiled for me so I know what happens, but I am not sure I can last that long even though I am trying to make a review for the game. I was hopeful that this would live up to all the hype that surrounded it, but I have just been disappointed.
    As I said earlier I am not sure why anybody would give this more than a single playthrough, perhaps a completionist or someone who wanted to fiddle with the varied settings could get more out of it, I just don't see myself caring that much. There is nothing to care about in this game, it is brutal for brutality's sake, and the characters are two dimensional at best. It would be interesting to see how many of the critics who gave this a perfect score actually pick this game off their shelf to play it again now that they've reviewed it.     I can't describe how disappointed and angry I was after seeing this preposterous story. Neil is the most irresponsible and shameless writer I've ever seen. How much I love TLOU, how much I hate TLOU2. Political right won't bring equality or reconciliation, it will only fk up everything and bring confliction.

    Look the graphics are beautiful but this does not make it a good game, very repetitive gameplay the story is not good
    boring and uninteresting, not to mention that they put political idiology into this game, the thing that I really don't care for, this is my opinion sorry people would love to like this game is no longer possible.

    The gameplay, graphics and music are all amazing and had me hooked the entire time. The story takes alot of risks that are interesting but also annoying. There are alot of flashbacks which for me mess up the pacing but overall still enjoyed it.

Additionally, the "we shared a kiss last night so that's enough for me to follow you to a deadly adventure, while being all sugar and rainbows, despite you having faced one of the most dramatic events of your life" narrative is way below Naughty Dog standards of storytelling.     A story full of relatable characters with a good ending that is not supposed to please the majority of the people, but to do what is supposed to do: tell a story. And in my honest opinion a great story. Positively adding the graphics and the stable gameplay, this just is the last real gem we'll see on the PS4.

    What made the first episode amazing, beautiful, touching and poetic was exactly not having to binary decide if Joel decision was good or bad. The part II literally does the opposite and destroys any form of subtility and force the player to admit what he didn't have to in the first place.

    obviously it´s not a 0/10 but it´s not perfect either.
    The story makes little sense. We as a player don´t even get the option to have an individual impact. A whole revenge plot that won´t let you decide if you want to take revenge in the end or not.
    If this were to be a movie or a tv show it would be fine I guess. The gameplay is basically the same, though map design changed in a good way.
    Additionally, I like the accessibility features.
    All in all, I would give this game a 7/10. This, however, is the rating I would give using some unbalanced rating scale like IGN´s, where a 5 means absolute garbage like Fallout 76.

    The art, atmosphere, and animations look and feel amazing. The level of detail put in by the art team is astounding. The gameplay is fun if you liked TLOU and is basically just a slight upgrade. My main gripe is with the characters, decision making, and general story choice. New characters aren't relatable and some flat out replace old ones (You really think I'd let you go alone?).     Not much to say here. This game is more or less a DLC to the first one that somehow took them 7 years to make. It heavily reused assets. The enemy and environment design is more or less identical to the previous game. The sound design is identical to the previous game. The menus and user interface are more or less identical to the previous game. The gameplay is nearly identical with a fewNot much to say here.     The AI is so legendarily garbage you can pretty much just walk up to it at times. The story pacing is a mess. We are introduced to characters one after another with no time to develop any kind of feelings for them and they are killed off just as quickly. With such a rapid fire of companion deaths it really challenges the disbelief that OUR character just happens to be the chosen survivor of each encounter. Every attempt to make you 'feel' something or shock you/subvert your expectations is the dictionary definition of hamfisted. It's just all around a terrible experience that feels like it was authored by an 11 year old from fanfiction.net    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sad and disappointed. I loved the first game so much and it feels like the sequel just screwed everything over. After all the leaks I had at least hoped that the relationships between the characters would keep me going - but it didn't.

    Beloved characters acted completely out of character, best example Joel's death early into the game that was caused by him walking into a group of strangers and giving them his name - which seems so weird when you think about the Joel we met in the first game.

    The game was filled with unnecessary, very graphic violence and torture p*rn at some points. I remember someone saying that this game is "rarely any fun" and that's right - the game isn't fun at all, it's depressing. And not in a good way because most of the characters in the game are so uninteresting to the story that you don't particularly mourn them. It's just boring.

    The graphics are of course outstanding and the acting is very good, even though some dialogue seems very forced and unnatural. I liked the flashback scenes with Joel - this is what I would've wanted more. More Joel, more hope. But all I was left with was Ellie, left alone by her friends and her love, missing 2 fingers, letting the one who killed Joel live and going off into the wild.

    I really hope they don't make Part 3, I don't think they can fix this.    … Expand

    The Last of Us 2 is hardcore trauma p0rn where cishet characters and racial minorities die horribly or randomly, often traumatizing the hell out of queer characters who end up surviving. Nobody wanted this. It's all shock value. It's especially insulting how the game came out during Pride Month and also Father's Day weekend in some countries.

    This game is so pointless everything about it is pointless. I wanted this game to do so well i wanted this game to prove people wrong and me wrong but it didnt. It was a huge slap to our face. Naughtydog ruined one of their best franchises and i hope to god they never make a 3rd one

    Embarrassingly enough, I spent $100 on this game, and regret it fully. Graphically beautiful, mechanics are alright, gameplay itself is meh, and plot had been butchered. Sad to see another series go down like this :(

It breaks my heart that the so called writer took the direction they did with this story. To watch such a beloved franchise be destroyed just to push a LBGTQ and SJW ideology is criminal. I love that they expanded the area size. Just like many, when I was playing it through and it switched to Abby, I had a very sour view of it all. Some, as well as myself, regard the first Last of Us game as the one of the best played. In the first game, we fell in love with the characters and especially the chemistry between both Joel and Ellie. And like a massive punch in the gut, we had to watch Joel suddenly seem out of character in helping Abby and was pummeled with a golf club in the first two-three hours of the game. I was distraught and utterly disappointed. However throughout TLOU2, it made me feel. It was an experience where I was in the shoes of both Ellie and Abby. With everything the game illustrated about the revenge cycle, it made me realize as much as I wanted Ellie to kill Abby ... it would’ve made no difference. The last fight between both Ellie and Abby made me feel extremely uncomfortable, and I was finally able to see Ellie was absolutely entrenched in her own guilt of losing Joel through the whole journey. Right when Ellie was about to start up her father-daughter relationship with Joel again, Joel murdered the next day. To this, the utilization of the central song (“If I ever were to lose you ...”) almost wraps the whole journey of Ellie’s together. In the final moments of the game, I was able to feel how lost and empty Ellie must have felt. Sure. It wasn’t an experience I was expecting. Initially, it wasn’t one I was enjoying either. I would’ve instantly loved it if the game went as I expected. But, happily ever after was never what TLOU was about. Though we fell in love with Joel and Ellie, the first game made us oblivious to what was happening outside of a certain scope. Seeing into Abby’s story was a slap in the face. But for me, it was almost needed in order to understand the world outside of Ellie and Joel’s relationship. Most of us agree that the visuals and the game mechanics were stunning. And props to Naughty Dog for all the accessibility options. I rated it a 10 because I’ve never had such an experience with a game before. It’s a bitter game but it’s one where I really understood and soberly felt what Ellie was going through.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can be said that already hasn't been said? The leaks definitely changed my mindset going into this game, which is unfortunate. I tried to avoid them like the plague, but some still got through.

    Let's get out this out of the way. The game on a technical level is beyond anything being done by any Dev out there. It is truly amazing that a PS4 is pushing out these visuals and the sound design is just amazing. On a technical level, my god this game deserves a 20 out of 10! Sadly, graphics aren't the only factor when playing a game.

    The story needs to be the glue that holds the entire game together to give you the drive to continue playing and this is where the game falls apart. I couldn't care less about Abby. This has nothing to do with her sexual orientation and everything to do with "WHO IS SHE?" Sure we get a little tiny glimpse into why she hates Joel, but comes on. I waited 7 years to play a sequel to my favorite game and the lead character gets killed within the first hour of the game.

    Ok, great, we are going to get a classic revenge story and with Naughty Dog twists, right? Wrong! We now go on an adventure that is way too long for its own good! The game is painfully too long and you start blowing through areas and skipping exploring because you just want it to be over. You don't even know why you are playing. Switching to play as Abby makes me dislike the character even more and then keep forcing you to play as her. I get it from their perspective and story telling and they were really trying to break the mold here, but it falls flat and there NEVER a pay off. Meaning, we are playing for nothing. You play a 30 hour game for nothing, basically.

    So basically we all waited 7 years for the most highly anticipated game of the generation and from the jump you have expectations smashed, forced to sit through a VERY long game not caring about half of it because we have no reason to care about Abby or her cause. We don't get the pay off we desperately wanted for Joel's death and it just comes off as lazy, forced writing to make a sequel. This game didn't need to be made from a story perspective, but Sony and Naughty Dog couldn't pass up this pay day.

    In the end, I came away so disappointed and this now has me questioning Naughty Dog games in the future. I get they wanted to have that GOT's moment, that Walking Dead "OMG" shock, but they didn't pull it off here at all. They gave me no reason to replay this game due to the length and again due to the fact that literally half the game does not need to be played, forces you to breeze through sections. Maybe that is the reaction Naughty Dog wanted all of us to feel, disappointment? Maybe they wanted to be different and tell us revenge is bad? Who knows, but the story is literally one of the worst and is such a drastic almost unsettling polar opposite of what made the original Game of the Generation.    … Expand

While I understand what Naughty dog was going for by the end of the game, it just wasn't for me, and I can't see myself wanting to playthrough this one again.

I loved the father and daughter bound between Joel and Ellie in the first game just as the bound between Lee and Clementine from the Walking Dead of Telltales. You can't just destroy a hero like that and force the fans to play complete stranger who brutally murdered that father figure in a most gruesome way. I cried when Lee Everett died in Walking Dead but the difference is he didn't just die for nothing, he died in peace feeling proud of Clementine and he had his peace with the death. But Joel got killed horribly right in front of Ellie and the spitting on the body of Joel right after his graphic killing is the most despicable insult one can make to fan base.     Firstly, the fact that they killed of Joel is actually fine with me. I get it, create drama, a new story line, seek revenge, etc.
    But the way they did it is absolutely disgusting. It's as if this Joel is a totally different character from the first game. They turned him absolutely moronic, made him do a mistake he'd never do and let him die off in an ambush without giving him any honor.
    Are you seriously trying to tell me that Joel, someone with more than 25+ year of experience in that post apocalyptic world, suddenly starts trusting random strangers who appeared on his patrol and walks straight up into their camp without checking whether it's actually save for him or not?
    Like wtf? That's the total opposite of what he did in the very first game when he was on the way to bring Ellie to the fireflies and had his first encounter with raiders.
    Why would someone who is normally always cautious, someone who has killed and made A LOT of enemies suddenly turn so gullible and stupid? Running into a camp full of uniform wearing people. I **** can't.

    Secondly, why the **** does it seem like as if there are only women in the game?
    First off, I have nothing against women, i think it's actually pretty cool that you find female enemies and Ellie is obviously awesome and dear to everyone's heart who played the first game.
    But aren't you taking it a bit too **** far?
    Disregarding the fact that Naughty Dog killed off their male main protagonist,
    they turned Ellie into a lesbian and made her have a female partner. Sure, it's fine, nothing original.
    It's not like any other goddamn game or movie with a female main protagonist tried to please the LGBT/feminist community by turning everything lesbian or by showing how women dont need men, etc.
    The main antagonist, Abby is also a woman. You know what? It's cool. Rarely seen and i'm fine with it.
    But why the **** are like 80% of the enemy human NPCs women? Aren't you making it too **** obvious who you are trying to please? I wouldn't be **** surprised to zoom in on infected and find a pair of boobs on every goddamn bloater.
    Underrepresenting females is not good, so you chose to overrepresent them? wtf?
    The reason this ****s me off is because the way youdo it is way too different from the first game.     From the first second I loved playing it. The graphics are **** awesome. The Characters look like real people.
    Yeah, it sucks that Joel had to die, but to me it didn't come as a surprise. From the first trailer I thought he would be dead. So, it was a story of revenge and, who is the bad guy in this? Abby for killing him? Or Joel for killing her dad an saving Ellie, but to what price? Ellie and Thommy both lost their wives, and for what? Revenge, But Joel is still dead. And Jesse. And so many more people. So, naughty dog told us a story about what violence can do. And in the End Ellie is all alone, the thing she most feared....

    I pray for a third game, the story is not over, abd I pray for our Ellie to get her girl and son back.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
