2nd Abby. The one who kills Joel we are forced to play ast he story and the expendable characters. Mel Owen Yara Danny and Jesse Abby and Ellie are both fighting to avenge loss. Abby her dad Ellie Joel.
Playing as Abby after she kills Joel. What you6 thinking.
Abby knows Ellie and tells her dad to kill Ellie for humanity's sake.
Killing dogs and pregnant women. The storyis a tick for tack revenge garbage. Story filled with flashback fluff. Could of been 10 hours shorter At the end after killing all these people Ellie then realises its wrong the point of this game is there is no point.
Abby and Ellie are both blinded by revenge that everyone's a causality.
Ellies fighting for Joel Abby her dad.
At the end she let Abby leave. So you come all that way for nothing to let Abby go. Ellie loses her fingers family and ability to play the guitar. Left with nothing but a guitar Joel gave her that she can't play.
Also the wlf seraphites and rattlers were poorly introduced into rhe story just like rhe expendable characters that no one cares about.
If naughty dog makes a LOUS 3 the only thing that would make sence is Abby and Ellie team up to get Ellie to the fireflies so she can sacrifice herself for all mankind. Revenge cost you everything.

I have been a vigilant defender of professional game reviewers, finding them to be significantly more in-tune with what the population at large considers "good" and "bad" than the average film critic. I always thought that this had to do with the stigma surrounding gaming; there was never any clout to be had, no influence to be gained or used, no desire to cultivate a certain image, and no desire to be anything other than just a group of people enthusiastic about their chosen hobby/artistic medium. Have games become too big for that now? Are we now going to be subjected to the howling wilderness that is modern film criticism? In the past, I always used professional reviews/metacritic scores as the biggest part (along with my personal taste) of my decision in whether or not to buy a game because I found them to be mostly right on the nose (Demon's Souls was critically acclaimed at launch, well before it became a commercial success). I guess those days are coming to an end now. Expand

    But I was severely disappointed..

    Story

To put it short, the story resembles a badly written fanfiction by someone who does not acknowledge or respect the reason that made people love the first game. The messaging of wokebess and diversity was pushed so much that it got way more screen time that could have been used to make the actual story more coherent and meaningful..

    Gameplay

The gameplay is very stale, the new unlovable soulless characters make it even more of a chore than anything else In addition to no new significant improvements on the first games mechanics.

    Visuals

The visuals and animations were the best thing in the game, there are beautiful landscapes and great attention to detail in the level design.
Sadly, even that could not carry an atrocious story like this one.

    Verdict

Before attaching a phobic description at me I’m not saying the game was disappointing because of the lesbian and trans galore going on in it (who characters slept with never mattered in the first game, not sure why it matters now but ok), I’m saying this because the story and messaging of this entire game is very badly done with little effort to make it mean something other than representation.. So please find a better use for your $60, invest in yourself, treat a loved one or help someone in need...Just make sure it doesn’t go to naughty dog because if this game indeed succeeds it will leave a taint in the gaming industry that encourages weak-willed creators to follow the atrocious trend of pandering and wokeness to get attention and legendary reviews on the expense of actually creating a good game with a meaningful story

All the hype that was built up, the trailers, the gameplay and the screenshots were basically a straight lie. The story is no longer about Ellie and Joel, as ND suggested. Trailers are misleading, as what actually happens in the game is different from what the trailers have shown.
As soon as TLoU2 starts the aim is to make you hate the old protagonist and side with a completely new character who you are forced to play with not even knowingly you will be playing with that character for more than half of the game. ND aren't sacred and can be called out for making a mistake. The story of TLoU2 is depressing and pathetic to say the least, I could not recommend this game to anyone even if I had a free copy given to me straight from Sony. Hard Pass.

    -Pros
Beautifully designed. Shows the PS4 is capable piece of hardware even now. Wonderful sound and soundtrack.

    Cons:
Gameplay hasn't changed. Pretty much walk from point A to B.

Terrible Characters. I don't care about any of these new characters being shoved down our throats.
    Plot holes are everywhere.

Cringe Dialogue. Scenes are sometimes laughable because of the dialogue between characters.

    Pace is terrible.

Game is 20 + hours when in reality with this crappy story, it could be reduced to under 15.

THE STORY IS TRASH. NEW CHARACTERS ARE DESTROYED IN ORDER TO INTRODUCE THIS NEW WORTHLESS CAST.

But she's also a lesbian so it's ok. The really revolutionary part of this game is the game-play. They did the unthinkable and added a jump button. This turns the game-play from a boring repetitive cover shooter to a boring repetitive cover shooter where you can jump, quite an improvement over the first game i must say.
Of course all the amazing action is topped of with the story and the way they tell the story. This really feels like you're playing a movie, except it's a little longer. They added an entire host of cutscenes to really show how bad the KKK is and how cool the lesbians are. A man gives ellie a sandwich and she calls it a bigot sandwich. Empowering.

The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.
The bad: I'll break this down as best I can but TLDR the story and characters fundamentally fail on nearly every aspect. So spoilers ahead.
    1. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, Abby kills Joel within the first few hours of gameplay due to his brothers frankly ridiculous mistake of sharing his full name. This is the decades through the apocalypse survivor who wouldn't be the slightest bit cautious when he knew people were looking for him... Evidently.
    2. Shifting perspectives, after Joel is killed we eventually get to play as Abby... for ten hours... What I like many others did was run the killer right into a clicker as I'm sure many others did. Why? Because I played through an entire game that I loved as the character that Abby unceremoniously murdered. I am made to feel over time that Joel was a bad guy for dismantling the Fireflies. But issues with that.
1.1 If you listen through the first games recordings they had many other cases where they thought they could create a vaccine with. All of them were killed, none of them produced a vaccine, Ellie very well could have been killed for nothing.
1.2 Worse yet, it is impossible to create a vaccine with that small of a team in that small of a facility, on a global scale it would take 1-10 years based purely on how lucky they got.
1.3 And the final most important reason, I didn't care when I did it. I care about the little girl who Joel had been taking care of for the past couple dozen hours of my life. Do I care about the people who would just as readily shoot as help me, no.
    3. Really weird sex scene out of nowhere in the middle of the game while other Sony products are bashed for having 'sexy' outfits.
    4. The lazy attempt to make me understand Abby, the villain in my humble opinion, just by throwing me in their shoes. This is contrived to make the story complex and powerful, but instead becomes a lazy way to extend gameplay. When thinking about ways to do this better I thought of Horizon Zero Dawn, Helis's tent had the logs inside which was given a bit lazier than spreading them out to piece together over time, but it was still a way to understand someone who killed the father figure without empathizing with them. This doesn't do that, this says hey you know how Ellie is a rage ball of revenge, well here's another rage ball of revenge empathize with her over the one you spent the whole last game and the lions share of this game with.
    5. Finally the ending "Boss" fight. You play as Abby not Ellie, you are not allowed to get Abby killed. Abby almost kills Ellie's pregnant girlfriend and says good when she learns that fact. (I don't care that Ellie inadvertently killed her pregnant friend.) Then once again at the actual ending you track down Abby have her underwater about to die when suddenly, oh violence bad comes in and suddenly hey I know I've killed hundreds of people to get here but yeah lets let them go. Then they have the balls to have a cut scene with Joel just to make you really regret spending money on this tech demo written as a tumblr fanfiction trying to be deep but instead being shallow and infuriating.
This isn't undertale, this isn't dishonored, and this isn't Detroit Become Human. This isn't a pacifist game going into the issues of violence. It's a revenge game and with all the set up to this point you can't just say violence bad and end it. Kill Abby give the player that catharsis, then give them the time to reflect on it after. It would make you wonder if the revenge was worth all the bodies left behind in a world already in an apocalypse, ponder if Joel would have wanted it, and whether you can live with the emptiness it leaves behind. But instead this game left me hollow, it broke my heart not that Joel died but that he died in such a stupid way. And it destroyed me to have to watch such a great studio as Naughty Dog who created some of my favorite games, burn because of terrible writing. It's the end of an era with this game and I hope it can regain glory but for now it looks like it will go down in a whimper and I'm so disappointed.

My thoughts on the game overall by the end was graphics 10/10, gameplay 9/10, story 3/10. The story just killed my enjoyment of The Last of Us Part 2 completely. It is so terribly written. There are some good moments, which is why the story gets a 3 and not a 0 but they in no way make up for the awful story choices that are made. Joel's relationship with Ellie is spat upon, characters make ridiculous choices, and the mystery woman, played by Laura Bailey, is, in my opinion, one of the worst video game character of all time. This character and the way she is portrayed is one of the big reasons why the story is so bad. Not only that but the ending is just awful. It completely undoes the message they were trying to tell and makes everything feel pointless. Again, the graphics and gameplay are amazing, but I just did not want to replay the game and witness such a terrible story. I returned the game yesterday. 4/10. The graphics, gameplay and some story elements are good but since the overall story is so important to The Last of Us Part 2 , and most of that story is horrible, I had to give it a 4. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't believe this is the actual game they decided to go with. This is a f**** joke. Druckmann.... seriously? It looks like You sold your soul in the name of what? WTF dude? It's your child, and you killed it, I hope you know it. As a huge fan of the first part (which i completed several times) i had at first some doubts about the sequel, i was feeling like.. damn is it even a good idea to develop the second part? The first had a perfect ending because of giving the players a chance to imagine on their own what happened to the main characters and how they lived on. But when the rumors about the second part were confirmed, i thought to myself - ok, let's give it a chance. I'm now after fresh finishing the sequel, and really i can't believe I spent 50 bucks for this piece of **** Really. Now don't get me wrong, i love the dark climate, perfect graphics, open world, exploration, cutscenes, twists, etc. But... i guess even if all of these are close to perfect and probably best in the game industry, it's still not enough when it comes to really bad scenario.

You literally ruined all what was beautiful in the game, and by what fans fell in love with the first part. I even think that the story of the sequel was originally different, but during these past 7 years something have happened, and all changed. You can see it even by watching the trailers. Fans now can assume that it was on purpous that You've put in the 'smart' way a Joel in the key scenes, so that fans would think he's alive during the whole gameplay and he helped Ellie in her journey. And yeah - everyone's now think that it was just a 'little' manipulation in video editing. But on the other hand You can also think that Joel originally was meant to be alive... Anyway - let's get to the point.

There are at least dozens of ideas for better story for TLOU2 and still keeping alive both main characters. I understand the whole story, really I understand the point view, its idea, the path that Ellie was walking on, the cosequences of Joel's decisions, forcing a player to get into the shoes of the opposite site, and understand that each site had its motivations, rights, etc. I also understand what was going on with Ellie, and why the game was so depressful in the end, but its all something completely different in the core idea/plan for making this game, its way more complex on many fields, it talks about hate, love, tolerancy, forgiveness, changes, regrets, PTSD, choices you make and its consequences, etc. But guys - the way you served it, a chaotic mush and rollecoaster of emotions sprinkled with dumb decisions.

Seriously what the **** was on your mind to let Ellie kill hundrets of people in order to avange the only person that truly cared about and looked after her, and in the end you decided - nah... let it go Ellie. I repeat - i understand your point view, but its really naive thinking she would really let Abbys go. And the moment with biting off Ellie's fingers... wtf? stupid, gross, dumb and unnecesairy. Similar as it comes to Joel - he was one of the smartest guys in game history ever. Thinking he would get ambushed so simply and in so dumb way (and Tommy too) is a ****ing joke. It looks like You completely didn't have an idea of how to move on with scenario. The same as it comes to Ellie - she acts as the Joel taught her, on the other hand she completely ignores those lessons, and for instance let her enemies live on (so they might have a chance to kill her in the near future). But even all of these are not as dumb as the idea to force players to play the WTF-out-of-nowhere character and move Ellie to the corner for the half of the game... JESUS F****** CHRIST.

I hated Abby from the very first moment to the very last. The idea of getting into her shoes is understandable, but the way you've done it completely kills everything. At the end of her campaign i thought to myself - jesus ****ing christ... finally. And the scene where the players had to hunt for Ellie - the most beloved character, You are really the kings of stupidity and ignorancy. I don't know who approved this **** idea, but it's a ****ing joke.

All those ratings of so called 'critics' were paid, we all know that now. The scale of the difference in critics and players ratings speaks for itself. The best and most beautiful thing in the game in my personal opinion were the flashbacks with younger Ellie and Joel. Now I would give someone a whole lot of money just to forget there is even something like TLOU 2. It completely ruined the story i fall in love with, the emotions, relations, journey, characters. Congratulations morrons.

Somehow, it manages to turn someone you immediately wanted to kill for their despicable act they committed, to desperately wanting to save them.

Video games often get over looked, but for me games like this? No other piece of literature or entertainment gives me the same experience, the same emotional journey. No movie, no book, nothing comes close.

The first game had an everlasting impact on me seven years ago. I waited years for the follow up and it delivered something I didn't know I wanted.

What's more, it didn't just give us a dark, nuanced exploration of consequence and guilt, but two totally badass, relatable female lead characters that broke every stereotype and taboo.

Then, to make me play as the villain, whom I do not care about, and still do not, seriously wrecked the mood and love I had for th game. And Ellie doesn't even kill Abby in the end, after all the **** like wat? Hello? Is this supposed to be "character development"? Left me feeling unhappy and unsatisfied.

I remember the launch day of the original The Last of Us back in 2013. I came home from school, bought the game and was so excited to play it. From the opening first 20min the game had me and when I beat the game I was in love with the characters, the story, and the world. 7 years later and I still love it and I was so excited about Part II.

Just like the first game, I downloaded Part II and was waiting for the game to unlock on my PS4. The game unlocked and I was finally playing the sequel to my favorite game of all time. I was so hyped and was so happy to be back in this world with these characters. The game looks so great and is probably one of the best looking games of all time (next to RDR2). As the story progressed I was happy to see where it would go and then it happened. The unforgettable act took place and I had no idea where the story was going. Based on the trailers I thought I knew where the story was going but I was wrong.

I accepted what happened and was dying to see what happened next. I played the story over the course about a week and was caught off guard so many times by the story, especially with a huge surprise half way through the game. I found myself rushing through the second half and stopped myself when I noticed. Upon completing the game I was unsure what I thought about the game. I LOVED so much about the game. The gameplay and combat is Naught Dog at its best! The animations is top tier and the acting is the best I've seen in a video game.

I thought about this game for days and finally realized that I actually really appreciate what NG did with the story. They could have done it safe and predictable but they didn't. The arc that Ellie and other characters go through is great. 90% of this game is about revenge, yes. However, the last 10% is a about redemption and forgiveness. While this game may not be what some fans expected, I feel this game will be remembered as revolutionary and ahead of its time a year or two down the road. I can't wait for my NG+ playthrough to see everything I missed during my first playthough.

    My final score: 8.5

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to make this a fair review.

Congratulation Naughty Dog, you made your hetero-normative white girl, who is built like a dude, and her ex-boyfriend, a white male, your most compelling characters of the game.

Why do I rate this game 4/10? Because the protagonist, Ellie, is an utter bore and really a terrible person. That's fine if this is by design, but that is what impression she gives me. As much as I hate Joel's death, and that particular scene is pretty awful, and I don't just mean uncomfortable to watch, I mean the setup was lazy.

They say in fiction that the protagonist is the one who changes the most. Well, then your protagonist is Abby. Abby has a classical arc. She does a heel-face turn and shows some genuine heroic capacity. Ellie is angry and bitter the whole time, and her dialog with Dina is cringe-y. Whereas Abby has good conversations that move her character forward. Ellie and Dina just exchange YA romance novel bromides about their love. No hetero character in the history of gaming has ever obsessed as much about their love interest as in this game. It is mind-numbing. So that takes away a number of points.

The next big reason is that ND does an incredible job at rendering a post apocalyptic Seattle, but the game mechanics feel like they are stuck in 2013. Most of the lore has no depth. The war between the WLF and the Scars is filler, and is just there to provide two factions so that the co-protagonists have someone to kill other than the inexplicable number of infected that run around in a war zone. There are quite a few times when you think, "This just makes no sense."

There are a couple good infected moments, however, including one in the hospital basement that i particularly liked, but it was there for "boss" value, not because it was born out of story. So those are my reasons it didn't rate higher, terrible Ellie arc and dated gaming mechanics. Also, the scenes that take place after Seattle are terrible, and further my opinion that Ellie is just a terrible person.

Gritty, morally complex, dark, and backdropped in a brutal and violent post-apocalyptic world, this game is one of the best (if not the best game) released in a long time... and certainly the best game released this year.

The game is a masterpiece of storytelling, and is MUCH deeper than Part I... foiling violent hatred against deep empathy with incredible effect through reciprocal gameplay elements. Ellie's emerging sexuality, and recurring strong female leads (both literally and figuratively), play center stage in this game, which is generally refreshing (and not licentiously overdone).

The results are an absolutely magnificent work of storytelling and gameplay... equally thrilling and heartwrenching to play and watch.

Unfortunately, this game has received an unfair and emotionally charged low score by many disheartened prior players (of TLOU Part I) who felt cheated by Naughty Dog's necessary maturation of the main character, (Ellie). While the Ellie of TLOU Part I was a bright and brave young teenager, full of quips and quick comments, the Ellie of Part II is now a competent and dangerous adult, who has matured while enduring years of emotional damage in a savage world... each leaving her with its own unique scar (physical and/or mental). Fans of LTOU Part I should be aware of the emotional change in the gameplay BEFORE going in. Your fond memories of the funny and snarky Ellie (and Joel) from Part I will forever be changed, often for a much darker, albeit morally rich and complex, main character.

With that caveat, this game is WELL worth the money... don't be fooled by the haters.

TLOU1 was one of the last PS3 titles I ever bought before generation leap, and I loved it. Ellie was a bratty but likable teen girl under the care of Joel was a cautious survivalist that'll kill you in cold blood if you even gave him a whiff of being a hazard to either of them. TLOU1 story was overall enjoyable with generally good themes, and a bitter sweet ending depending on personal feelings on what you'd do in that position. Without giving away too much away about TLOU2, both characters seem like different people all together with awful consequences in the sequel. What's worse is you play as a third character who is 100% unlikable in every way that they try to get you to feel sympathy for despite what she does to Joel and Ellie early on. Then when it's all over, you feel absolutely zero satisfaction, the game's plot ends just as senselessly as it began. Sony's first party single player exclusives get criticized as "movies not games" which isn't entirely unfair, but usually the story is at least at a movie level of quality so you enjoy them anyway. This one's gameplay is just the first game's rinsed off and presented to us again with slapped on gimmicks like dogs. Which would be fine if the story wasn't one of the worse ever in a modern videogame. I can't honestly think of a single story between 2006 and now that I hate more. What a disaster. I'm giving the game a 3 because there is nothing redeeming about it other than it's visuals and that'll be short lived with next gen around the corner. The Last of Us Part II is a dark, brutal, depressing, and intense ride. From the get-go, you are thrown right into the fray with hardly any time to catch your breath. I fully believe that if you want the best possible experience, it’s an absolute must to play through on Survivor. With that said, let’s dig right in.

What I enjoyed the most was the gameplay. If you play on Survivor; patience, resource management, and planning are critical. Going into each encounter with guns blazing might leave you in a bad spot in the next encounters, so you’re forced to think about how you want to take on each fight, how much resources you’re willing to spend, and utilize the environment to your advantage. Do you want to be stealthy, use your weapons at your disposal, a mixture of both, or simply avoid fighting altogether? That choice is up to you, but again, there are considerations you’ll have to make. The tension you’ll feel in each encounter will make you appreciate that momentary respite when you make it through, and gives you some time to breathe and prepare. I may be in the minority when I say I enjoyed the story despite being controversial amongst critics. I appreciate Naughty Dog’s willingness to tell a story that isn’t simply black or white. What their tale does explore is the gray area, the area that is neither right nor wrong, difficult to judge, and does not have a clear and definitive answer. It was a risk the developers took, one that many people either hate or love, but I believe it paid off in the end.

My one critique of this game is that, although I do very much enjoy the gameplay, it will feel repetitive not very long into the journey. Once you’ve seen one fight, you’ve basically seen them all with some very small variations. If Naughty Dog would have thrown in curveballs and different mechanics to deal with as you progressed, I think it could have kept things fresh and provide some really unique battles.

The bottom line is, The Last of Us Part II is a fantastic game. The world and atmosphere is beautifully crafted, and each struggle will leave you triumphant. It very much deserves your attention and play through, and so I highly recommend The Last of Us Part II.

The gameplay is like the 1st part, a little bit improved and ofc with IA problems.
Very similar to TLOU2 but with gar-bage LGBT argument as main focus, oh and Joel... my god, /clap /clap what they did to that character.

Ignore the angry nerds who came here and review bombed it, this game is excellent in almost every aspect. The narrative is the only drawback, and it's a big drawback, as it leaves much to be desired and also leaves you just picking your head wondering why they made certain narrative choices. Gameplay, music, atmosphere, mechanics are all second to none and it's definitely still worth playing.

You are forced to witness the death of a beloved character and then play as the murderer of said character all the while the game wants you to sympathize with them. Then towards the end, Ellie can not even bring herself to take revenge but seems to have no problem killing hundreds of people instead. I am just appalled and the disrespect this game showed towards the first one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Emotionally Draining - In a Great Way

Anyone familiar with the first franchise entry won’t be surprised that The Last of Us Part II is not a game that’s going to leave you feeling upbeat and chipper. Make sure your emotional bank account is good and ready for the beating it’s about to take before jumping into this game.

Violence, drama, and more violence. That’s most of what this game is, but just like last time around, Naughty Dog doesn’t lean into violence for the sake of being violent. They use it to illustrate and enhance the intensity of a world turned completely upside down, and to take us on another journey through that bleak and brutal world.

The narrative is different this time around. We already know the world, we already know the infected, and we already know the original story of Joel and Ellie. Part II takes us on a continued, yet distinctly separate narrative journey. The Last of Us Part II deepens our relationship with Joel and Ellie while adding the emotional complexity of a new cast of characters. By design, the game shows a different side to the original story while also expanding into entirely new territory.

The chronological ordering (or lack there off) to how the story is told can be somewhat jarring at times. Ultimately though it does serve to make the narrative delivery more suspenseful and dramatic. Some of the flashback scenes felt a little slow compared to the pace of the rest of the game, but many of them did add useful layers of context and drama.

The mechanics are subtly but nicely improved over The Last of Us in nice ways. Dodging and evading feels like a more realistic way to engage in melee combat, sneaking is more nuanced now that you can go fully prone, and the ability to visibly listen to enemies takes time to improve. The gun mechanics leave a little bit to be desired, but the melee mechanics more than make up for any gaps. The brutality and fluidity with which you can mutilate just about anyone and everything is superb. And the accompanying graphics and audio couldn’t be more raw.

Overall, The Last of Us Part II leaves you never quite knowing how to feel. The weight of every major moment in the game is successively more and more heavy. It truly is a proper “Part 2”– the game picks up where the original left off, gives us more of we loved, but brings in enough “newness” in terms of narrative and the overall story to stay supremely compelling throughout the entire journey. If you want a game that will force you to feel something, The Last of Us Part II is a must play.

Getting right to it, I will say this is a good game. Is it 10/10? No. is it 1 or 0/10? Also No.

Getting right to it, I will say this is a good game. Is it 10/10? No. is it 1 or 0/10? Also No.

Firstly - there are too many bad reviews on here because people just didn't like what happened to Joel, or the game is 'Leftist propaganda', or any other number of silly complaints, and honestly speaking, I feel sorry for them. Just because a game didn't give you the story you think you deserved, or if you don't agree with gender stuff or orientation of people because you're too stupid, is not a reason to trash on something 100%. I hope everyone gives this game a fair chance - if you don't like it, that's ok, but least be fair about it. I hope my words seem fair - I played the first right before this as I never had, and while I enjoyed it, it didn't blow me away like so many others, so take that as you will, but I think that gives my opinion a fresh and possibly more neutral stance.

With that out of the way, I will say this about what I liked:

Game play feels very improved. The controls feel tight and responsive, animations are great and fluid. I do feel the AI is much better as well, calling out to each other to circle around and alert others. Not the *best* AI ever, but very good, especially for a stealth game.

Environments are absolute jaw droppers. Beautiful and quite large, well made and intuitive. I do wish there were more open areas like early on, however wasn't really a negative I would take away, just something more I would have liked to have seen, pretty minor.

Enemies are much better, and new ones are damn freaky. Some of the bosses were straight up amazing/terrifying. Even returning ones like clickers feel harder to deal with and more intense.

The big elephant in the room, the story - I will outright say I did in fact like it, but it's definitely not perfect. I'll try not to get into spoilers, but I am saying that even though this is really, REALLY, not a happy story, that doesn't mean it's bad. I think the story that happened, happened for a reason, even if we didn't want it to happen that way. I respect that, and to be honest I think that made me feel a wider range of emotions than if we had gotten the happy 'ellie and joel ride off into the sunset' story everyone keeps complaining we should have gotten. Actions have consequences, and this story is about that. The first tlou was about hope and the relationship joel and ellie built, I think this one is much darker, really about revenge and dealing with grief. Very different, but that doesn't mean that's bad.

Now, leaning more towards the negative, I have this to say:

While I did like the story overall, there were pacing issues that I really didn't like. I think, for me, the timing of some of the flashbacks felt wrong - you'd just have finished something major, you're really into that part of the story, and BAM, flashback that really didn't have much to do with what you were doing. It felt.... off, and very jarring.

Along with that, some parts of the game seemed to drag much more than others. Playing as Ellie? blew through it. But at some point you play as Abby, and whatever your thoughts are about her, her areas just felt.....longer. And not in a good way. Almost at times you kinda just wanted the game to hurry up and get to the next thing. With Ellie the pacing was good, story elements seemed to happen when they should - with Abby, I kept hoping around the next turn something would, but often didn't.

And lastly on the negative side, the characters, more to the point, the new ones. I liked them, that wasn't the issue, however they didn't really do anything with them. You meet and set up these new people, and they just kind of...don't do much with them. I think parts of the story could have been made much better if they had developed these characters more.

All in all, I really did enjoy my time with TLOU2. It's a very different game than the first, and I think a lot of people were angry they didn't get what they were hoping these two characters they loved deserved - I hate to say it though, but that's kind of life. A lot of bad stuff happens to a lot of people that either don't deserve it, or that we love deeply, and that's just how it is. ND told the story they wanted to, and just because we feel angry, upset, or even sad, about the story, that doesn't mean it was a bad one. Combine that with very, very solid gameplay and exceptionally beautiful areas, and you have a really good game.

Please give it a fair shot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished the game and I can tell why the hate.
(note I played the game on hard difficulty before I change it to easy difficulty because I just wanted to finish my pain)
    First the positives:
TLOU2 is one of the best looking games of this generation.
The first hours of the game build the tension perfectly (before that controversial scene). The exploration is well rewarded.
    and...that's it.

    Mixed:
the gameplay, they add DOGE button that makes the game a cakewalk, you can easily rush and enemy and not be punished by it, (note most of the game I played it on hard until the last two chapters of the game), I had a lot of clunky moments where the camera didn't look where I wanted and there is no button or to immediately change your view from left to right like in other games. You have enough supplies to go and wage war and the enemies are either dumb as a rock or intelligent like a predator, I had moments where they could easily see me through walls or tall grass, finally, the companions (I will talk about their traits and character in the story section, now only the technical part) are useless, they spot me a lot of times with them because they refuse to turn off their flashlights or just let me do all the killing for me, except in the scripted parts (duh).

    The bad:
New human enemies that heavy type like in any videogame, but they resist 2 bullets to the head that kill the sense of realism of the game.
Clickers are easier now, you have a knife that doesn't break and you don't need to sneak behind them, you can easily grab them from the front and easily kill them. So...they are not scary anymore like in the first game.
So many bad level design, when you want to do a part super sneaky, the game purposely is designed for you to fight them, like the first level you encounter the scars (the e3 gameplay showcase level).
At the end of the day, the game is no longer about survival but an action game.

    The awful: story and characters
brace yourself, Im about to end this game's career...wait, other people already did it, nevermind.
As you know, tlou isn't about the gameplay, but the story, that's why I like tlou 1 story and worldbuilding, but the gameplay is what it lacks.
Since this game is about story, you must have a good one, unfortunately it doesn't
First: the death of Joel, people aren't mad because Joel died, their mad because how he died. They changed core design character traits from the first game. Joel and Tommy woul've never help Abby, Joel woul've never trust the wolf easily, Joel would've never do something risky that would've put Tommy in danger, guess what, they did it in tlou 2 to have their revenge story.

Second: Ellie, In the end Ellie end would've never spare Abby, she would've never regre killing Mel (just because her girlfriend was pregnant), thats bad writing. Ellie would've let jessie take dina back to jackson and look for tommy to help her kill everyone.

Tommy: at leats he is consistent, but he get the screentime of Haru in Persona 5, non-existant.

Jessie and Dina: they are one dimensional, and have no reason to help you. Their line are generic and honestly Jessie is just a meat-bag, that wouldn't be bad, but the game tries so hard to care for them put the game does not put reasons to like them. Jessie: I look up to Joel (but we never see this, we don't know the realitonship of joel and jessie, therfore we dont care).

Dina: I love you, we do this together. that's the only reason...a generic reason if you ask me and she doesn't add nothing more, their dialogues are boring or just obvious. She is like Navi in TLOZ OoT, but she is useless.

Abby: she is just a **** she has no likeable traits, not even at the end of the game or when you use her. She is all muscle and no character. And brings most of the plot holes: how did she know how joel looked liked? How did she track you down when the map you drop didn't had your hiding location? why did she goe back for those kids (just because of a dream, that is weak as hell)? SO MANY WHYS (but I need to spare my characters).

Owen...I like owen. He is consisnten and a likeable charac ter with good goals, unfortunatley he is underdeveloped.

The rest of the WLF: the game tries so hard for you to like them, but in the end is useless, because you know this guys are just as worst as the scars. They are not better and at somepoint even worse, their actions when you use Ellie are potrayed as phycos, but when you use abby they are good folks. And there is such a big disconnect, bad writting once again.

Scars: they are not consistent, they dont use the "old world stuff". But they do, and the reason is because they use it when convinient. Yel says that, literally he/she says that.

Finally the ending: the worst written ending I've seen. Is the least video game ending of all time. When you play games, you want at the end to be a payoff. Guess what, there is none, you let Abby go away, and all that killing for nothing.

Naughty Dog’s story telling on this one is a low point in an otherwise great catalogue of stories. They work overtime to make you feel guilty for loving the characters from the first game. They force you to play half the game as one of the most unlikable game characters in recent memory. Once the game reaches a fever-pitch with Ellie, they restart the whole game with a new story with horrendously bad characters. They constantly skip past/present/characters and end up with a story that ends up not saying anything at all. I’m happy to see some different types of characters in a AAA title, the graphics were amazing, but this game was a chore to get through, and I can personally say that 95% of The Last of Us 2 was downright bad.

There is not an objective or possible way to try to underrate this game. Neither you like or your hate the story, there are many facts, way too many facts and pros in The Last of Us Part II to analyze and compare to other games in its genre, and Naughty Dog's last game simply is an magnanimous hand-made videogame that I've ever seen in my 30+ more years on videogaming. Uncharted seriesThere is not an objective or possible way to try to underrate this game. Uncharted series were over the top in every aspect and TLOUII is simply three steps forwards and none backwards compare to everything else done before.

Also, although it wasn't necessary at all, cinematic direction and concept game direction were very risky, but they were executed properly and in a good way (Debatable). Script, story-telling and what we play is the most "Game of Thrones" things in videogame, where killing any common enemy will look so ridiculously gorgeous and photorealistic, with eye animation and such a great quality design (Not only graphically, but in concept) that it's almost hard to watch because you feel like you're killing a living being. To experience empathy is very common in this game.

You will feel "something" in every decision made in the story-script. Will it be sad? Will it be good? Will it be bad? it will depend entirely on your personal experience with the madness-vengeance story, but be sure that you will feel something. As a player, you will be part of the story because the connection is too tight and perfect to every character shown. There are not black nor whites, only greys.

Technically is also one step forward everything you've seen. It looks like a damn PS5-XSX even on PS4 FAT, and we still don't know how magicians Naughty Dog's developers made this.

A masterpiece that everyone should play at least once. A better and riskier game than the original The Last of Us (2013).
