How can we skip Joel’s rampage and eventual path to safety??? And jump straight into playing damn snowball fights and a stupid virtual guitar. Naughty Dog was gutted a few years ago, and we should’ve seen the writing on the wall then. Another potentially groundbreaking game ruined by feelings Expand

Joel was a really good character
    The other characters were bad

    Not because they are LGBT

The biggest problem I have with the game is the story of the game. First with Joel's death happening after only the first 2 hours of the game by a character you play with through the game along side ellie. Everytime I played with abbie it makes me feel like turning off the game and never playing this game again. The story for this game is trash. If I had a chance for a refund I would definitely get one and not support naughtydog and specially neil druckman for making disasterpeice of a game. Dont buy this game Expand

Other than visual improvement, the story itself is bad from beginning to end. Game is disturbing and tedious. Pace is slow and lengthy. Not worth the time and money. AVOID AT ALL COST.

The Last of Us Part II

I've spent a lot of time contemplating a review of this particular game. I don't usually review games in general on any forum - thus this being my first Metacritic review - some will claim "review bomb" but this is not the case, please hear me out.

The first installment of this game was a masterpiece, it featured lovable characters that many people (including myself) became attached to, just as in other games like Tomb Raider, but with the added emotional character attachment that oft doesn't develop, or at least not on such a deep level in video games. Along with the great narrative and exciting adventure that made TLoU so great.

When I heard ND was making a TLoU2 I was excited to continue this adventure with the beloved characters I had become emotionally attached to, however this game took a turn for the worse early in my playthrough as the series' main protagonist fate was revealed.

I wasn't a fan of the new characters, and it certainly wasn't what I thought I would be playing when I pre-ordered The Last of Us 2. As I was playing through I often thought to myself that this should have been a new IP, maybe named "Vengeance" or something rather than marketing it as TLoU2, it seems kind of like a bait and switch to me. In addition the gratuitous violence was on a new level, I'm sure this was what ND was going for but I wasn't a fan of it.

The game play was somewhat improved over the original while not being top notch, I was not unhappy with that aspect nor was I unhappy with the visuals or the environments as I prefer more linear games. The animations were top notch, however I did feel the game was too long, it could have been half the play-time and achieved the same end result. About half way through I was ready for the credits to roll.

I can't help but feel as I stated before that this should have been a new IP, which I think would have had more positive reviews, but a TLoU game this is not thus the low review score.

    Here's my take:

    Graphics: 9/10 - very good
    Environment: 7/10 - very good
    Animations: 9/10 - top notch
Mechanics: 5/10 - good enough for the type of game it is
Narrative: 0/10 - not good, not TLoU
Characters: 1/10 - I barely remember their names let alone like them, other than Ellie
    Play-time: 3/10 - too long
Gore: 0/10 - excessive and unnecessary
    Marketing: 0/10 - misleading

In conclusion I will just say this, I'm disappointed with the game and ND, you're better than this! And I look forward to more masterpieces like Uncharted, but I'll probably not be buying any more TLoU games in the future.

The Graphics are phenomenal. The Gameplay is alright, nothing absurdly bad there.Nothing amazing, but its serviceable.

The story is the problem here. The ideas sound like they could be alright: Cycles of revenge are Bad, dealing with death of a loved one, actions have consequences, coming of age, etc. Lots of messages being sent here, which would be great if they were executed properly.

Look, if you want to give this game a chance and were a fan of the first, please see one of those cinematics-only videos on youtube to see if you can stand the story first. That way you can get most of the "experience" that was intended, as the game was basically an interactive movie when it was interactive at all. If you liked it, buy it. If you didn't then don't and join the club.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us was always Joel and Ellie. You could take any two characters and throw them in that world, but that is not the last of us. The last of us was an emotionally intricate and complex story of heartbreak, love, courage, anger, happiness and more revolving around two people. It was a story where the writing and directing was so incredible that it caused the majority of us to connect to and to care for a set of video game characters like never before. We were on that journey with them the entire time, feeling the love, the anger, the heartbreak, the joy that they felt. It connected to me personally like no other video game ever has and still remains, for me, the greatest story in a video game ever....which is why the Last of Us Part 2 is such a disappointment to me. From a purely gaming perspective, this game is fantastic. The graphics are incredible, the game-play is brilliant, the animations are almost flawless. However, even all of these brilliant things about the last of us part 2 cant help me look past how poor and misguided the story is. I didn't play last of us 2 for the graphics. Sure they do help, but, and I'm sure many would agree, I was so hyped for, and played it for the story. I couldn't wait to jump back in after all these years, and after the first hour I was already worrying about where the game was heading. I don't agree with it, but I don't mind them wanting to kill off Joel. However, it was cheap. Instantly then and there in that mansion, the whole premise of the last of us died. An entire game without the relationship between Joel and Ellie which is even worse considering how it was advertised to us as if Joel was gonna be in the game for at least longer than the opening. But I accepted it and continued on under the assumption we were off to get revenge for how they brutally tortured and killed Joel, and in front of Ellie no less. However, half way through the game, when you've gone through the process of taking out the majority of the gang bar Abby, it is mind boggling to me how we are forced to play as her. This woman who brutally murdered Joel and then shot and killed Jesse, whose death was also cheap, right in front of us too. We are now forced to play through her childhood and then play with her and her gang who killed Joel through all 3 days in Seattle and I just couldn't be bothered at this stage. I don't care about Abby. I don't care about her life. I don't care that Joel killed her father. You had this person murder one of the most beloved characters in video game history, 1/2 of the last of us, and then we are forced to play as her, while the writing forces us to try to empathize or connect to this character in some way which is impossible because of what she did. It only gets worse then as, after playing Abby's never ending half of the game, you are forced to fight Ellie while playing as Abby. Then when you think its all over, it reels you back in as Ellie decides she cant let it go and heads to California to find her. Then once you do, after she brutally killed our favorite dad Joel, and after she murdered Jesse, and after she bites 2 of your fingers off, you let her go instead of killing her rendering the whole plot of this game, which was effectively justice for Joel, pointless. This whole story is ridiculous and completely misses the point of why so many of us fell in love with the first last of us, not to mention how inconsistent it is regarding how returning characters think and act based on the first game. The second half of the game in particular baffles me. Playing as Abby just bored and annoyed me as I couldn't care less about her and in no way was I ever going to connect to this random character I was forced to play as who was thrown in to this game to kill Joel. This game just felt like a massive middle finger to fans of the original game. Roughly 20 hours it took me to complete my playthrough and I stopped caring about the game as soon as it hit Abby's part. It is massively upsetting that I waited so many years for a sequel and this tone deaf monstrosity of a story is the best they could come up with. They took everything that made us love the last of us out, and, while I enjoyed playing as Ellie once again for her part of the game, I refuse to accept this as a sequel to the Last of Us. If this was the garbage that Neil Druckmann and his team were going to provide us after 7 years of waiting, I would've preferred if they had not bothered with a sequel and just left us with the masterpiece that was The Last of Us. I think a lot of people who liked the game and are claiming people are just 'review bombing' it for the sake of it and 'love complaining' are missing the point completely. If you take this game as a completely separate standalone with nothing to do with the last of us then yeah, it's a great game. But this was supposed to be a sequel to the Last of Us, the continuation of Joel and Ellie's story but that's not what we got. They failed to deliver. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have been waiting this game with great anticipation. I even bought the remastered version of The Last of Us 1 to replay it in anticipation of this sequel release.

I do not know why the writers have deemed it necessary to kill the main character from the previous game like he was not relevant anymore. I do not understand why characters who were deep and interesting are now single-layered and cliché. The only explanation is that it is a game made to look like a sequel but but made by entirely different people with no talent.

I am sorry for the team who worked on this game. They obviously worked a lot to make it AAA. But a story-driven game with a **** story is as much a failure as a Hollywood blockbuster with a bad story and gawd awful characters would be. That's that simple.

This could be said it is a John Carter level failure, but I actually enjoyed John Carter. It is a John Carter 2 level failure, the sequel where john gets tortured and killed in a dix minutes long agony scene and his killer becomes the main protagonist for half the game. John's friends, seeking revenge, finally corner him and eventually offer him a beer and a hug.

    Credits.

I have not finished it yet but I am not really enjoying the story anymore as it is simply too far away from my personal reality which means: I simply can't relate and don't even want to. Providing a basis for a very questionable woke ideology seems more important than good story-telling. So: Was it really necessary? Holy **** . Thank you Naughtydog for this piece of garbage.

The realistic approach for the art style, the intention to detail of the game level and environment, the facial and movement animation, all of that blow my mind away and I can not wait to see this game performance on the PS5 later.

Unfortunately for me, that was it. Other aspect of the game really make me want to put the controller down. The first installment of the game was heavily relies on its story as its main drive. I don't know about others but I was enjoying the cut scenes more than the gameplay. For this second installment, the gameplay is basically the same as before, the stealth mechanism still not really thought out, multiple unnecessary violence, an uncomfortable sex scene, etc. Every time I encounter an enemy, it just does not feel as good, the gameplay sometimes can feel like a chore that I particularly hate to do but was forced to do so. I secretly wish I could skip it for the next cut scene.

Even more what make me scratching my head in frustration is, the cut scenes in this installment does not have the same level of enjoyment as the previous one. The premises of the first installment that really hook me is the unlikely relationship that was build between Joel and Ellie, two very different person that was impossible to become such as they are at the end of the first game, if it was not for the situation that they were in. The father daughter relationship that was build on trust and unexpected love. The first game also leave us with the big question on the quest for the vaccine.

The second game focusing on the wrong things, for me I always associates The Last Of Us as a story of Joel and Ellie, now Imagine that that you play Uncharted 2 but in the first two hour Nathan Drake was killed of by some random NPC and then you are force to play as the said NPC for 1/3 of the game so that you could 'understand' her reasoning while playing catch with some dogs. It could be a good stories if it was written properly with a proper build up, but there is nothing that could support the writer choice and reasoning for the story to unfold the way it did. After finishing it about 20 hours later, all I feel is the bitterness that lingering in my mouth, there was no hope or expectation or even desired to know more about what will coming next like the first installment left me.

You know what make me more uncomfortable, Naughty Dogs actually know what we, fans of the first installment want, but we only getting to peek at it through a series of flashback cut scenes rather to actually experiences it. But instead we are force to play as some unknown character and experience her pain.

This is undoubtedly my biggest disappointment in a video game that I have been expecting for almost half a decade. The game will obviously make its millions and will always reminds me that video games and its industry will always be business first, and Naughty Dogs that has set it foot as one of the most beloved game studio since last decades, has fall from its grace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

A sequel to a quite popular work, accepted as a well-written dystopian action game, with strong emphasis on it's characters, their development and their bond to each other.

I always thought, that the first one had quite repetitive and let's just say, pretty simple gameplay, a really good presentation, a cool and interesting hero, solid storytelling and good world-building. It was a decent game overall.

Now, the second part has that.. sort of I guess... And even more. "Great" one might think. Eh eh, sorry to disappoint you guys. The cool & interesting hero is not the protagonist anymore and is literally gone after a few hours and the "more" is actually something, that games and art generally should have less of...

And that is pandering, virtue signalling and an agenda-driven intention, to push ideologies. Don't get me wrong, an artist generally can of course use art as a way to express the personality, feelings or to sent a message, in my opinion – that is totally welcome and interesting for a reflective recipient, no matter if agreeing with the artist or not. But in this case, an form of art is MISUSED to PUSH their own viewings and ideas on others drastically... And as a gamer since the 80s, that is something I want, can, should and must not tolerate. So, I raise my voice as a real GAMER via this platform and say NO to The Last of Us Part II.

Out of a quite well-narrated grim action game with emotional moments for mature players, they made a dull teenager walking simulator drama infected with identity politics.

I am afraid of what they might do to Nathan in the future, if they decide to carry on with the Uncharted Franchise. I mean, he is a cool, masculine straight white male, right? And that is something, that does not fit their agenda at all... but hairy arm pits, folks, hairy arm pits on females do. Apparently.

Hope that Naughty Dog will soon announce: "THE LAST GAME OF US".

The Last of Us 1 is a game that has been loved by many for three specific reasons:
Graphical beauty, character development and storytelling.
Joel and Ellies complexed relationship was fascinating and made the motive of the story intriguing and captivating, and the core of the game lies in the Storytelling.
The Last of Us 2 takes place years after the first happening. It is a visual masterpiece, the VA's are on point, and it almost feels like watching a movie at times. ....But here comes a problem.
Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the game, knew that without a specific happening, this new game would eventually stagnate. Neil Druckmann needed a strong plot, so what would be better than something very infuriating?
Neil Druckmann went ahead to kill of the gameseries most beloved character.
This choice will bring Very divided opinions. I am standing inbetween.
I understand that letting us, along with Ellie, watch Joel getting tortured and executed will fire our passion. Passion for Revenge.
The problem doesn't fully lie in that Joel died. The problem lied in the Way he died and how Early he died. Creating a game while trollbaiting its fans that they will play as Joel and Ellie again, only to kill Joel off within 3 hours of a 25 hour long game is unfair. Not just for the hardcore fans but also those of us who simply created a bond with Joel in the first installment.
In other words, in order to Successfully kill Joel off, Neil had to make the rest of the story Intense and Passionated. It needed to be about revenge... and i am Not saying it wasn't.
I am saying that it was too little, too late.
The first 7 hours after Joels death was stagnating, filled with paddings and "mini-puzzles" (For instance, when you have to find safe codes, move something out of the way or turn on generators).
It doesn't help that the relationship between Dina and Ellie barely progress or develops, which kind of sucks since you Want to like Dina. When you finally think that the game reaches a turn of event, from the slowpaces tempo it held for so long, you suddenly no longer play as Ellie, instead you get to PLAY as Joels MURDERER.

Halfway into the story, we get to follow this person, Abby, and her point of view.
Why she kills Joel, what she does up til the point of the decisive battle.
It is Very hard to care about Abby, and the whole plot feels Forced.
We get it, Joel killed her father, but the same father wanted to do an operation on Ellie that definitely would have killed her, Yet knowing he would Never have done that same operation on his Own daughter. (His hypocrism makes it difficult to pity his death at all)
Then all of a sudden Neil Druckmann wants us to care for Abbys lovelife and friendships. He fails.
Ironically the second part of the game has the most interesting actionscenes, and the grittyness can get very intense at times, almost Too real.
On that note, it is important to mention how incredibly wellmade some details in the fightingscenes are. When you for example strangle an enemy you litterally see their facial reactions to it, including their restless panicked eyes and the screams from someone that you just shot sounds unnervingly realistic.
In other words, when the action gameplay works, it WORKS.
The problem is that the STORYTELLING lacks creativity and enough motivation to go on.
The passion is gone, and while playing as Abby you don't fully know what you are supposed to do. It is like a milelong padding filled with actionscenes.
On top of that there is multiple Flashbacks. Not only mentioning the main flashback for Abby, but we also enters flashbacks within flashbacks within flashbacks, and eventually the whole plot is lost in a maze of different timezone with little to no reasons to be told at all.
The only part worth mentioning is when Abby meets Yara and Lev. Both contribute well to the story imo.
Now that we have reached the Present again, and expect us a decisive battle where you kill Abby as Ellie, you gets to play as Abby trying to kill Ellie instead. As if the whole game hasn't been a big slap in the face already. At this point you simply don't care anymore.
After the fight ends, Abby and Ellie goes their seperated ways and Ellie settles down with a pregnant Dina (How convenient).
HERE the game should have ended. Simple and clean after an already failing storytelling... But NO. Now Ellie wants to hunt down Abby again.
I don't even want to dig into the ending, since it makes no sense and feels more like Neil wanted to throw in some "final fortress", but the story ends the same way as before anyways.
I think Neil Druckmann desperately tried to copy both classic Homeros and cult-director Hideo Kojima. He did not make it.
For those that loves action and graphics but couldn't Care about storytelling, this is the game for You.
For us Others who loves storytelling... this was simply a mediocre Disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a disgrace to it's predecessor, and an insult to fans of the first game. Joel dies in such a rushed and contrived fashion, I felt frustrated and annoyed, not sad. Abby is the worst, as soon as she kills Joel she becomes irredeemable and yet you have to keep playing as her throughout the game. I mean you don't even get revenge in the end, Abby lives!?! I have never been so disappointed in a games story in my entire life. I'm not going to talk about the gameplay really, because its just fine. although I enjoyed the gameplay in the first game what really kept me playing was the outstanding quality of writing, and sadly this failed sequel falls flat on it's face. This is what i wrote 4 days ago, I gave the game a 2/10 but the website blocked me from posting a bad review. as it does for many other people. When looking on reddit it is clear that meta critic has mass blocked reviews that fall under a certain review score, Shame on you Metacritic! This game sucks Abbys flat af "pecks". Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has improved in many aspects from the first one, way much better gameplay, amazing graphics and the sound design is just on point every single time but this is a story driven game and all these technical stuff are there to support the story of the game to shine, and here where this game falls short, its soo anticlimactic the character progression is almost non-existent and the narrative falls short in so many times making the game feels missing something.

The fact that we play as Abby to try and get her POV is trash because we don't get anything useful other than explaining her reason which just boils down to "you killed my father" that's it other than that 50% of this game which we play as her is basically not relevant at all, she is a new character that you established in the beginning of that game that we hate, the reason why you are giving us her POV is beyond me at that point because we already established her...

if you were trying to make the players forgive her or just feels compassionate about her that wasn't the way to do it, maybe reverse the order of the game, give us insights about Abby first then continue to her killing joel then Ellie trying to get revenge only to realize this is not gonna go anywhere somehow and then ending the cycle, this feels like lazy writing as non of the main characters (Ellie and Abby) get any insight of each other at all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolute garbage. If you are interested in the story then just watch a playthough of it on YouTube. I don’t know who thought a post apocalyptic revenge plot was a good idea but they should be fired for how they disrespected the story and characters built up in the first The Last of Us game. It’s so obvious that Neil Druckmann wrote this game for himself and not for the fans. The gameplay itself is basically the same as the first game with a few minor added details and the graphics are phenomenal but it’s quite literally nothing we haven’t seen before. The Last of Us Part II does nothing to innovate itself or the genre it fits in like its consumer based had hoped. It’s just absolute nonsensical for what it was.

Spoilers: The way they disrespected Joel’s character in a way that completely tears apart the character Naughty Dog designed him to be in Part 1 is a testament to their mindset when producing the entirety of this game. And honestly how does Ellie manage to kill dozens of people throughout the entire game but OUT OF NOWHERE has an epiphany as if rEVeNgE iS WrONg when faced with the opportunity to enact the revenge that the whole story is centered around? Honestly Neil, you should re-evaluate your love for writing good original stories because this wasn’t it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a bad storytelling . As a game dev you should know that after releasing a great game, the sequel needs to be at least as good if not better.
But they completely ruined the franchise with this one. And don't get me wrong, the gameplay is fine (pretty much the same as the first game with a little more gimmicks) , and the graphics are great. But the last of us wasn't and never will be a fun game because of its gameplay, it's about the beautiful story that leads you through interesting plots and the interesting characters you meet along the way. But sadly this game does not have that. The story does not make sense, the characters are boring, the game is more like a pro LGBT community AD. Dont get me wrong. Whatever rows your boat, but I don't need to see two "men" literally having sex in a zombie game. And the best part is that Joel, the guy who brutally murdered atleast 200 humans and zombies in the first game, Dies within the first hour because the devs thought it was necessary to kill the main character in a humiliating way, even though you spent 15 hours playing him in the first game to build a story that was so boring and trash, to the point of asking myself why I 'm even playing this game... Oh I know. Because I payed 60$ for it... Save your money and get a game that's actually worth that price.

I honestly don't know where to start, it's honestly baffling to me that you can kill one of the two main characters within the first 5% of the game and think the game is gonna be enjoyable after, isn't enjoyment the whole purpose of Video Games? Why do you go out of your way to just make this game as un-enjoyable as possible.

Don't get me wrong the game is pretty and the area's are well thought out, but the story and gameplay OOF. Gameplay is just a repetitive **** show, where you clear one area of enemy's and continue to the next.

And don't get me started on the story, halfway through and it just felt like a draaaaaaag, having to play 10 Hours of a Character that i couldn't care less about really hit the nail in the coffin for this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is such a letdown from such a long development cycle and so much anticipation. Perhaps it was the hype behind it or it was the huge shadow that the first game cast over it, but Neil and the writing team at ND should be one hundred percent ashamed and embarrassed of themselves. The story is weak and based on a lie, Neil said that they wouldn't do something as cheap as kill Joel extra early for that cheap shock factor, but then did it anyways. That part's bad enough already, but the worst part was after playing as the character (Ellie) we actually cared about you FORCE me to play as Abby the one that kills Joel, the other character we care about, for hours and hours on end. The best way to describe the gameplay is uncharted 4 with a little bit of The Last of Us sprinkled in and exclussively on the player. Enemies number in the hundreds, have unlimited ammo, pinpoint accuracy and AI ranges from agitating to full blown idiotic. The gameplay is copy pasted to TLoU pt 2 from the first one, sneak around, stealth enemy until stealth is no longer an option, but of course there are way too many points where Naughty Dog thought it'd be funny to put way to many portions where stealthing is not an option. And when the game doesn't provide enough recources to stabilize the player during firefight after firefight in a SURVIVAL game, it creates frustrating loops of trial and error. Changes were made seemingly to make things worse. Stalkers are completely invisible in listen mode, you can't swap bottle/brick on the fly, stealth sections are made purposefully impossible to complete 100% stealthy and you can't just sneak through entire areas like you could in the first one.

Abby's section(s) are unenjoyable mostly because I spend the whole game wanting this character to die. I don't care who her dad was, I don't care who she loved or **** I don't care what she does or what she did. She will always be the one that killed Joel and I want her to die in the most painful of ways, but Neil and his writing team thought that her killing Joel should be in the opening hours of the game rather than flip it, backstory then kill Joel. This was a lazy, slap in the face so I often spent the massive amount of time playing as her to kill her on purpose.

The areas, in the vein of uncharted 4, are trying to be a little more open and while I appreciate the attempt at making these worlds feel lived in and it definitely makes the environment more interesting than the actual characters or story, those "side quests" can range from pointless to impossibly pointless, being more trouble than they're worth.

The point of this game, according to Neil was hatred and revenge. Major ending spoilers, so after what amounts to 20+ hours of gameplay, literally the last couple levels are Ellie vs the Cartel in order to again track Abby down and kill her. What was it all leading up to? What happens to Ellie? She lets Abby go. When you effectively shoot yourself in the foot at the beginning of the game and then in the other foot forcing me to play as a character I as the player actively HATE and cannot wait to kill and then force this morality on me, it's utter trash and stupid. I WANTED to put her through what she put Joel through worse even. She should've died. I'm supposed to believe that after killing: David, Hunters, infected after infected, countless nameless survivors between this game and the first one, countless wolves, Scarred, Owen and a pregnant woman, that Ellie is suddenly inflicted with morality and can't do this?

So since the story is so weak and the ending is the gaming comparison to a middle finger from Neil what about the gameplay? Well it's dated. The core of it is fine, but it borrows too much from Uncharted 4. It's action packed setpiece after setpiece like it's Uncharted. I'm limited to 8 shells of shotgun ammo vs this Scarred dude who can put 7 arrows into me as I try to rush him, but since Naughty Dog saw this as an affront to their "hide in the tall grass and shank people" loop they wanted they jacked up the enemies aggression and accuracy to 20 and said **** you". Uncharted 4's grass as cover thing worked better because you were invisible when you did it, but since Ellie takes about 3 weeks to slit a dude's throat and read them their blessings you end up getting spotted because she takes the better part of a month to kill one person. The infected are dealt with similarly, the Shambler is a nusciance forcing stealth into open combat, just don't bother. The "boss" in Abby's section was utterly idiotic. And Naughty dog is to scared to mingle human and infected enemies together for more than two or three sections. And to ensure you're forced to clear all enemies before proceeding you have to hold triangle through all doors. At least the graphics are nice to look at sorta.

If Neil was going for a game that focused on hatred, congrats, mission accomplished. We hate your game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's pretty clear from reading the negative reviews that many of them either 1) decided to hate the game when they read out-of-context spoilers, which wrecked their experience, but they're too immature to see that, or 2) they never played the game, but hate "SJWs" and see a chance to blame SJWs for "yet another game wrecked by their agenda." If you're labeling any game that veers from the "straight white protagonist" format as "SJW propaganda," then the problem is you. Grow the f*** up.

Yes, there's LGBTQ+ plot elements but nothing about the story or the characters struck me as "token SJW characters." Many were angry about Joel's death, but the game gave me the full spectrum of emotional experience within 25-30 hours of playtime. It's classic Naughty Dog, and anyone that thinks the Last of Us would make you feel "safe" clearly wasn't paying attention and most certainly did NOT play the original's DLC.

It's not perfect. The game spends more time on the primary characters (Ellie, Abby) and so the secondary character development suffers a bit. They're not terrible, but none of them approach the memorability of Tess or Bill. The open-world format of Seattle Day 1 dragged a bit.

Still... it's not "a revenge game." Go watch John Wick or play one of the countless games already made on that topic. It's much deeper than that. All of the characters--Joel, Ellie, Abby, Tommy, and many others--have done unspeakable things that were "justified" in their eyes. This game is about what we become when we seek revenge, but also about learning to forgive the unforgivable. This last part is more about Joel and Ellie than Ellie and Abby--how do you make peace with someone that was taken from you?

I'm happy to play a game that surprises me. Subverting expectations NEVER guarantees a great story, but playing it safe ALWAYS prevents a memorable one. Kudos to Naughty Dog, I'll happily wait another 5 years for Part III.

And **** all of you going on about trans characters and other 4 Chan **** Head for the door and come back when you learn to think for yourselves.

I largely dismissed reviews and went into this game with an open mind. I loved the Last of Us Part I and played through it a few different times so I figured the outrage over Part II must be exaggerated. It isn't (and I'm gay so no, it has nothing to do with gay characters as some defenders of this game are bizarrely claiming to dismiss accurate criticism).

I'll start with the good. The graphics. True to the first, the graphics are amazing. That's why I gave the game a point...and it's literally the only positive I can find.

Now to the substance (or lack thereof). The storyline is absolute garbage. I'm going to try to avoid spoilers (they can easily be found elsewhere), so to put it generally, characters from the first game are like completely different people. In the first they were hardened, intelligent, cautious and had depth. In Part II, they're completely superficial and the writers seemed more interested in changing the characters to fit a storyline rather than creating a storyline to fit the characters.

New characters are completely unlikeable and uninteresting. It's not "Oh I don't like this mean character, I want everyone to be sweet and nice and without conflict!" It's more like, "What is this nonsense? Why is this character so forced? Who wrote this trash?"

There are several instances throughout the story that are purely for shock value and emotional impact. That would be completely fine if they had any depth or substance but it just comes off as gimmicky and desperate. There's less actual emotional impact and more just eye rolling at how ridiculous and out of place it is. There are multiple massive plot holes that are never explained and a very bizarre ending that makes no sense.

When I first played through Part I, I couldn't put it down and had to know how it ended. Part II, I had to force myself to finish and was just bored, unsatisfied and annoyed by the end.

I'm honestly baffled as to what the creators were trying to do here. It's like they created a game for people who live on twitter rather than their actual paying customers and fans of the first game. I really feel like an idiot for having wasted money on this.

I'm even more baffled at all the positive reception by "critics" and "journalists." I get that taste is subjective and if someone likes this game that's perfectly fine, but really, the storyline is just so objectively bad, superficial and lowbrow. I really question the motivations of someone who could give this a 90-100 score, especially if they've already played/are a fan of Part I.

Pay attention to user reviews before you waste your money on this game. The ridiculous narrative that they're all "fake" is simply untrue. The game really is that bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So here is an honest review from someone who has actually played the game. This game is a massive disappointment for five reasons.

1: It completely abandons the morally ambiguous theme of the first game. In the end of TLOU 1, Joel killed Fireflies for a completely selfish reason and doomed the lives of millions. There was no concept of good or bad in that game, Joel was not "good or bad" and whether you agreed with his decision came down to the player, blurring the line of what was right and wrong. Now in the sequel, Ellie AND Abby, who I'll talk about later, have the sense that they are right and what they did was "right" and they are completely morally justified in what they did and the player is supposed to agree and sympathize with both of them splitting the players decision. Either their both good, both bad or one is good and the other is bad. Abandoning such a massive concept that people loved the first game for is an embarrassment.

2: it devalues the lie that Joel told Ellie in the first game. In this game that topic has a total of two cut scenes in the game dedicated to it despite it being the whole reason people wanted a sequel. Not only is it not focused on but it is also not the centerpiece of the game which brings me to number 2

3: The game's centerpiece is revenge. This element is not focused on justly in any form of media in my opinion, and when it is, it is so predictable to guess what happens and in this game after Ellie massacre's hundreds of people, she decides the let the person who was responsible for Joel's death live making the whole journey throughout the game, including plot and character development, utterly pointless and the previous sentence stated brings me to reason 3

4: Abby, the antagonist responsible for Joel's death, has very little connection to the first game despite the fact that she is the centerpiece of this game which even further devalues reason one. Her reason for being in this game is that Joel killed her father, the surgeon Joel stabbed in The Last of Us. Now wanting revenge for your father is a valid reason for being in a game, but when your father is a faceless, meaningless character in the overall plot of the first game, it makes the character that wants revenge even more meaningless. It's even more pointless since Ellie doesn't even kill Abby...in a revenge based plot...let that sink in...

5: So Ellie has found out the truth about the Fireflies and she's hunted Abby down and didn't do anything. So as an audience you'd think that'd be the end right. Wrong, because us as an audience never found closure. After this 20 hour game, that wastes our time on a revenge plot so pointless and uninteresting the vaccine still never gets made. We never get out "the end". Our period at the end of the sentence. At the end, we even find out that some Fireflies are still alive. You know what that means? That's right, we get sequel baited!! Isn't that great?....

It's really pushing it calling this game, The Last of Us 2, when the main element from the first game is not focused on, when the antagonist is not connected to the main element of the first game making me getting interested in her void and pointless and only leads me to hating her more so when she has an entire 50% of the game dedicated to her since you play as her in the second half, and the main character of The Last of Us 1 dies in the first 2 hours of playtime, and when the centerpiece that was expected is replaced with a predictable, easy to guess plot, with practically no surprises. This game holds no emotional weight that was present in the first game and when it does hold emotional weight it isn't related to the first game, or I am desensitized into even caring since the only two cases where there is emotional weight is: one of the only characters I care about dies before he gets any meaningful screen time or the emotional presence is related to a new character that I don't care about because I haven't had time to get to know them and their character arcs are either bleak or not present. This game is not a sequel, and to anyone who says,"But it has good game-play/graphics". That is completely irrelevant since this is a story based game, and if the story sucks, it makes the entire game meaningless in terms of its reason for even existing in the first place.

The games director inserted himself into a mocap sex scene with the new protagonist. Its his face digitised onto a random NPC's body. He's literally sleeping with his own creation.
Ellie ends up taking care of a Child after her girlfriend sleeps with a random man of African descent. She accepts the affair and just raises a dead beat mans child, and this is portrayed as a positive.
And of course Joel is murdered before Ellie and himself can reach any reconciliation with regards to his actions at the finale of the original game, no attempt is made at compelling writing he's killed as shock value.

There is more to hate, but you shouldn't plsy the game to find out. I refunded it the next day. Don't feed the trolls who claim all criticism of Tlou2 is homophobic, fans welcomed the Left behind DLC with open arms despite it establishing Ellie as a lesbian this game is a train wreck, a power fantasy of a director who decided he wanted to use Tlou as a springboard for his own game instead of crafting a sequel. Naughty Dog didn't even pay the dev team during the final months of development.

Schlichtweg ALLES!

    Was ich gut fand:
Grafik, Gameplay, Atmosphäre, Sound, Synchronisation sowie die vielen Zwischensequenzen, machen das Spiel zu einem echten Erlebnis!
    Was ich furchtbar finde:
Was mich zum nächsten Punkt bringt...

Was will man mehr? Was soll dieses trostlose Ende? Unfassbar frustrierend!

Disappointing beyond words. The Last of Us can now join Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. in the graveyard of once beloved series and much anticipated sequels. What big studios are consistently revealing, whether it be with regard to movies or games, is that they ultimately do not understand what made fans come to love their series in the first place.

Great visuals/graphics (in games) or special effects (in film) cannot compensate for competent storytelling and treatment of characters. And at various points, if you pay sufficient attention to character motivation and established traits, you will find yourself utterly baffled by the sheer amount of out-of-character behavior.

I'll give the political dimension of the game some more detailed discussion. I'll preface by saying that I identify with a number of liberal/progressive/what some might call "social justice warrior" causes (I happen to be a minority myself). But even though I think these are good causes, that does not mean I enjoy being preached to or impelled to think a certain way. The tone of this game approaches preachiness at various points and REGARDLESS of what the message is, for people who think critically, there is NOTHING more likely to provoke an instinctive backlash than telling people how they ought to think.

Diversity in media is a good thing, but the treatment of the characters in this game, who unarguably represent a range of diverse identities, is almost insultingly shallow and superficial. They remain largely uncharacterized and undeveloped beyond the single trait which the writers apparently think will suffice to speak for their whole person. If they were to try it all over again, I'd tell the studio to go for quality over quantity. Focus on investing your "X character" with more depth and dimensionality than "well he's the X character." Games and movies which choose not to develop their characters in these more nuanced ways may in fact harm more than help the causes they believe they are championing.

I would probably give this game a -2 or -1 if that was possible, as I feel as though I actually lost something from my experience. Since that's not possible, a zero will have to do.

Joel is needlessly killed in a manner at odds with what is known of the character in the first game. Ellie is a former husk of her previous self and is now a one dimensional rage machine. The supporting cast is flat and might as well not even have names for how much they matter. Abby by far is the most unlikable character in the entire game, partly due to her killing joel and partly because she adds nothing to the story and even though you are forced to play as her in what is basically a 10 hour side quest you come out the other side even more resolved to end her life. She is as morally ambiguous as joel was and is in no way a 'good person . Her motivation for killing joel is lackluster "he killed my dad who was going to kill a 14 year old" and she comes across as whiney The ending is atrocious. A revenge story where at the end you....do t get revenclge, because killing and revenge are bad? An odd message considering you spend the majority of the game gutting NPCs who had nothing to do with joels death and even a pregnant woman on your quest for vengeance. You then have a protracted 15 minute hand to hand slugfest only to let abby live because....joel flashback? Unsatisfactory conclusion to an unsatisfactory game. There is also the issue of the mechanics and gameplay. Apart from the ability to go prone, a dodge button and better melee animations, the gameplay is largely unchanged from the first game. A game that came out 7 years ago. This game feels like a re skin of the first. Save your money and just replay the last of us part 1

This interactive movie is a mediocre mess.

The Dialogue sounds like something out of poorly written fan fiction. It honestly makes DmC: Devil May Cry's Dialogue look good

The Voice acting most of the time makes the characters sound monotone, especially Ellie and Dina

Character design... well they look like how real people would, with the exception of Tranny Armstrong

The Combat system is uninspired and mediocre

And the story Is awful if you're going to kill off a beloved main character, do it right. Do not kill them in the most disrespectful way possible, and then let the killer go free because "Revenge Bad" there is nothing satisfying in that.

There's a lot of attention to detail in the game. Too bad they put effort into that than anything else.

People who defend this game are pathetic, picking out the most minute details to try and distract from the sheer **** storm that this game is. In short, this game is like your average high school crush: They look pretty, and you can imagine having a good time with them, but in reality, they're just devoid of anything interesting and all they have going for them is good looks

God awful writing in plot and characters ruins a game with some gameplay elements that are briefly fun but get old quicker

Woke politics inserted into games appears forced and typical of the pc police always trying to sell narratives instead of just making entertaining or fun games/art

All that combined with relatively mediocre monotonous gameplay mechanics, made it a drag to get through and largely upsetting through most of the game. Unlike the first game there are no silver linings throughout the story that greatly contributed to the enjoyment of the original Last of Us, as it also carried a lot of weight. There's little to no feel good moments past the first hour or so of the game; all melancholic or upsetting. Combine this with new largely un-relatable characters, it's easy to wish they didn't make this game and left the first game to it's own. This game would have been better suited as either a spin-off or a standalone title; it's really that different from it's origins. The implications of the success of games like this has grave implications for the gaming industry. If you did not like Starwars episode 8 the last jedi or episode 9 the rise of Rey you will not like this game. Do not buy this game Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
