    The story gets completely butchered and main characters destroyed in order to appease an agenda. I have no problem with LGBT characters in a game at all when it's done in a way that makes sense and progresses the story. This was NOT one of those scenarios, this was done purely for optics and destroyed virtually every aspect of the game. The beautiful graphics and gameplay improvements get overshadowed by an abysmal story full of plot holes, wanna-be-game-of-thrones-esque shock elements and complete destruction of the main protagonists while forcing an agenda down the players throat.

    Waited 7 years for my favourite game to get thrown into the trash. only thing stopping it from getting a 0 was the fantastic visuals and gameplay mechanics, other than that the story felt like a poorly written fan fic. (the flashbacks were the only good parts of the game)

First ND bait and switch you into thinking Joel was gonna stick around the game only to kill him off in the first 2 hours by a nobody who's life he just saved. Not only did Joel and Tommy act like **** idiots, they don't even think that the strangers have ill intent. The **** was all that about not trusting people in the first game, then? Then Ellie. They turned her from a witty and likeable character into a sociopathic piece of **** killing and torturing anyone she can only to not kill Abby in the end because of a bull**** flashback. The only reason I'm not giving this **** show a 0 is because the gameplay is good. Not groundbreaking or original but good and satisfying.… Expand

    After playing and enjoying part 1. It is sad to see part 2 with bad story and just playing almost for no purpose! It a shame to see this and I wish the game stopped with part 1 and did t waste time on part 2.

    I was reading the user reviews for this game and they just made me so sad, to the point where I had to make this review. I believe that if you enjoyed the game, good for you, I really wanted to enjoy it, but some story decisions presented here made that impossible. I want to first get it out of the way that from a technical aspect, this is a masterpiece. I mean the graphics, sound design, level design, and score. Now let's talk about the gameplay. I am very mixed on this. The gameplay on The Last of Us II is nothing revolutionary and barely does enough to differentiate itself from the first game, but the gameplay is almost always enjoyable and entertaining, only sometimes getting repetitive. Now the real divider, the story. I do not think killing Joel is necessarily a bad decision. As a lot have pointed out, it makes the world feel believable. But in the way that the game actually played out, Joel's death sucked all the life out of the game. The really bad: We should not have to play as Abby. I think Naughty Dog just though like, Joel killed Abby's father, so the players will connect to her, right. Wrong. Of course, Joel has done immoral things in the past, but these things are part of his character, and we love his character either way. The fallout of his death also caused one of the worst character decisions in the game, Ellie. Ellie is now a shell of her former self, she has no character and just kills the whole game. I just think that the premise of a revenge plot is not a strong pull for a game because the only way it can end is Ellie killing Abby. If not, then the whole plot will feel like it was for nothing, this was what happened. If Ellie had actually killed Abby, that would have been a bit better but it would have felt like Ellie had not learned anything and her character would have developed nothing from the start of the game. The side characters are kind of useless and add nothing to the story. I think that for The Last of Us II to have been a good game, the writers should have thought of another hook for the game. I think that most of the people are tricked into liking this, thinking it is a deep, dark and depressing game. Those things don't make a good game, a edgy game isn't necessarily a good one. Interesting and dynamic characters make a good game. I'm not the biggest fanboy of the first Last of Us, I don't hate this game because Ellie is gay or some idiot things people might say, I didn't have fanfiction that this game didn't live up to, I wanted a game that respected while still changing and growing the characters in ways that feel believable and true to the first game, sadly, The Last of Us II fails at every fundamental aspect of storytelling and while its presentation and tone is stunning, I cannot bring myself to give a high score to a game that didn't give me a reason to invest with the characters and story.… Expand

    This game is seriously giving me depression. The constant in your face violence and the uncaring attitude of the characters as they happily cave in skulls of anyone unfortunate enough to come across them, and then the game has the gall to try and make me sympathise and relate to the characters.

    I was bored for long periods of the game and couldn't be assed to finish it.

    The game has amazing graphics and the combat is kinda mediocre and feels like a game from 10 years ago. 3/10 Would not reccomend it unless you must know what happens but i suggest you just watch the movie somewhere on the net.    … Expand

    I wasted a whole weekend on this game, the story goes nowhere for such a big chunk of the game and i feel like my time was wasted, the ending is a joke, character motivations in the second half aren't explained so you don't know why characters are doing things, the trailers showed Joel and ellie in some scenes that aren't in the game at all absolute waste of money. Decisions like Joel's death, the introduction and focus on a brand new character (Abby) with very little backstory and depth and the many obvious politically influenced implementations all result into what might be my least favourite game of ALL TIME...and i have some very low standards.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start by saying that from a technical standpoint what they've managed to squeeze out of 7 year old hardware is phenomenal. The soundtrack and the fluidity of the games animations and character movement are top shelf also, however sadly for me this is where it ends.

    The story is incredibly poorly written and the ending made me question the whole point of it, and not in a good way. The treatment of some of the legacy characters is infuriating because of how they act completely differently from the first game. Joel and Tommy seem to have suffered from the worst case of amnesia recorded in human history and this is completely out of character and makes zero sense as they would never act the way they did in that certain scenario. Some of the dialogue used in game made me roll my eyes in disbelief ("Bigot sandwiches" and "Brainless brother duo") as its just bad and ultimately cringe-worthy.

    The newly added jump button is implemented badly and seems to be there as a filler but the combat has improved from the first one and the newly added vertical scenarios make some combat situations interesting. Crafting is identical to its predecessor with the addition of a silencer that can help greatly during battle although the bow is still the stealth weapon of choice.

    Sadly though in my opinion this game pales in comparison to its predecessor for its storytelling and character development and that's a damn shame. I really can't recommend this game for anything other than its visuals and audio but as we all know it takes more than a pretty paint job and a nice song to impress some people, myself included.    … Expand

    The positive reviewers like to act like they are making good points when arguing why Joel was meant to die. No one disagrees Joel deserved to die, he was never established as a morally good character and he made a selfish decision which condemned the human race. No one is angry Joel died we are angry about how he died. My take on this would be much different if we were introduced to Abby long before she brutally murders Joel. They set them self up with an insurmountable task of creating empathy for Abby. And they didn't even try, we got a ten minute scene where she saves a Zebra with her father then they reveal Abby is the person who convinced them Ellie should be murdered to save humanity. If the writers are trying to make the player empathize with Abby why would they establish her as the one who condemned Ellie which inevitably led to Joel killing her father?

    Later on in the story we are introduced to Lev who saves Abbys life. This prompts Abby to betray the wolves to save Lev. This decision of Abbys feels like a fruitless attempt by the writers to establish Abby as a morally good character in order to gain empathy from the audience. They're trying to define Abby as selfless contrary to her making numerous selfish decisions. It's hard to say anything for certain about Abby's character because every other decision is conflicting. One moment she is selfless the next she is selfish. When it comes to condemning Ellie her morals are for the good of the many but when it comes to saving Lev her morals are for the good of the few. She gets very angry when she finds out Ellie has killed her friends yet she's already betrayed these friends and was prepared to leave these friends behind to help Lev.

    The story overall is nonsensical and revolves around and characters literally abandoning and losing everything in a fruitless quest for revenge. Both Abby and Ellie quite literally sacrificed everything over avenging the deaths of two people in a world where everyone has lost someone. Death and violence is around almost every corner of this world. Yet for whatever reason these two people are so special our characters travel thousands of miles killing hundreds to enact their revenge. Even after watching the bond which is formed between Joel and Ellie in the first game I have a hard time believing that Joel's death was enough to bring on this murderous rampage. Especially after Joel and Ellie’s rough relationship has been established.

    This world isn't the same world we were put into in the first game. There is no hope in this world, there is only violence and sadness. The violence is so over the top that by the end of the game I was completely numb to it all. The game heavily relies on shock value that was brought about through overly violent and grotesque actions perpetrated towards beloved characters which was so overly used it left me feeling nothing when the game came to it's final conclusion and this mattered the most. At no point were we given any sort of relief or loving character development which gave us respite from the sadness and violence of this world previously. In the first game Ellie provided 90% of this relief from the awful world we were witnessing. But she is now a shadow of her former self, despite spending her years safe and sheltered in a settlement with electricity she has completely lost the spark we saw in the first game. The conclusion of the game is hollow, hundreds die in this needless revenge plot and one singular person being saved who the player has established no empathy for is supposed to bring meaning to all the meaningless violence.    … Expand

    Great graphics, but the plot clearly shows that the creators decided to spit in the face of heterosexuals who came into the game to protect themselves from the LGBT community. Developers probably believe that only minorities play their game, but they don’t consider normal people to be people.

    i give it a 3 for graphics and thats being generous ok so JOEL was the MAIN CHARACTER OF THE FIRST GAME AND THEY JUST KILL HIM OFF WITHIN THE FIRST 2 hours so thats that AND the game is like playing a hitman level, you kill everyone on the map just to let the target live and leave

Shame, if the game was gonna be this bad I would of not of wanted it to be made. For anyone who has played the first I beg them not to waste their hard earned money on this especially during a pandemic, if you do you will be disappointed.The only thing I can admit the graphics and gameplay are an improvement over the first but that story is the biggest middle finger to fans of the first game, they don’t care if you got attached to Joel or Tommy and they make you play as some Abby chick that spoiler warning....... Abby does an Andrew Ryan’s to Joel head with a golf club very early in the game and you have to play as her more than Ellie. Ellie speaking of her you have to bring her new boring forced loved interest Dina. The only reason why she’s there to begin with is because SJW’s and the LGBT community have to force us with content we don’t want. Dina is so plain you don’t even worry about her one bit unlike Riley from Left behind, she’s the perfect love for Ellie and their first love is poetic. If anything Maria should of went instead of Dina since Tommy goes to Seattle. You will cringe during the Abby scenes and you will be even more unsatisfied with the ending. Not at all, in first two hours you expect to go uphill, where it's just goes downhill at 600km/h. What I've been started to like is Ellie playing guitar and that was my LAST HOPE for rating this game more points (I am a guitar player myself) Unfortunately Ellie lose two fricking fingers on her left hand. Why two for god sakes? Like they couldn't make it on her right hand so she could at least strum the strings. But no it is obvious they wanted to destroy that, my last hope for appreciating this game more than just a gameplay. As a guitar player I felt that pain more than Ellie did.… Expand

    Hopefully this game doesn't receive GOTY, let alone be even mentioned for it.

    This game is a huge disrespect to all the fans of the previous game.

    This review is only based on the first couple of hours of the game as I have stopped playning and likely will not continue. Like everyone else I have been looking forward to this game for at long time as i completely loved the first one. The Last of us 1 is proberly the best game i have ever played and it is not likely to be topped. Leading up to the release of part 2 I have avoided spoilers to the best of my ability and though I heard rumors of a lacking story and charcters i dismissed them and wanted to try the game witha open mind. At first i was so excited to be back in the world with charcters i missed and the stunning world naughty dog have built. But all my excitement quickly faded and i was left with nothing but grief and despair when Joel died in the starting moments of the game. Why oh why did you make that choice Naughty dog? Up untill i saw the tombstone i was still hoping that he somehow pulled through, hoping for a coma or anything that would save him but alas when the tombstone appeared all hope faded. I was left empty and with no purpose to continue. I played till i got inside Seattle but had no enjoyment or want to continue the story, I have now learned the ending of the story and now i have even less desire to finish the game. This game should have been so good even if you just did more like the first one maybe not a 10/10 but certently not a 3,6. Rest in peace Joel.    … Expand

    The characters felt so different that the characters I thought I knew, and I thought I loved, but turns out they are not who I thought they were after-all. The story is too dark and full of plot holes, I wanted to stop playing several times because I didn't want to continue, I didn't like what was happening. Naughty Dog made this into a game it didn’t need to be. It’s not the game fans were expecting, or one that fans wanted.

    I really wanted to love this game, but now I wish I had read the spoilers, I would have lowered my expectations and entered with a lot of caution. I feel my love for Naughty Dog and the Last of Us franchise has gone from Hero to near Zero.

    I hope they create a Last of Us 3, but pretend that this game never happened.

    The one good aspect of the game, graphically it looks above average, sadly everything else is below.

    The last thing I will say, is I am worried at how there can be such a huge difference between “Official reviews” versus real players. So when I finally played it and was shocked at the player experience. How can I be having such a bad time and really not enjoying the game, when the critics who loved playing this and gave it such great phrase? How can there be such a disconnect between review and consumer...

    Sadly I really cannot recommend this game. It's a total disappointment and not worth your time. Just watch a playthrough online and save your money. I wish I had.    … Expand

Before anyone can whine and say I didn't "roll credits" on this game, let me assure you I did, and I stand by my opinion that The Last of Us Part II is the worst game ever made, from a story standpoint. Gameplay wise, the game is fantastic. The look and feel of everything is almost as great as it was in the first. But you can have the prettiest game, movie, or TV show in the world, and people will still despise it if the story is flawed. And, my God, this has to be one of the most terrible, unredeemable plots in video game history.
    ***SPOILERS FOLLOW***
    Roughly one hour into the game, if that, Joel dies. Okay, many of us were expecting Joel to die in this game, myself included. But it isn't his death, but rather the way it happens.
    In the first game, Joel is untrusting of anyone. He knows that there are more people out there in the world who mean him harm than good, and it's better to not engage with them. Yet we open into Joel's impending death with nothing short of a "Howdy, ya'll! My name's Joel!" He's murdered by a newcomer character named Abby, for whom you have no feeling but hatred after what she does. His death is far too brutal, to the point it crosses the bridge into torture porn. I couldn't watch it, and this is coming from someone who enjoys SAW and Hellraiser. And the reasoning behind it? Abby is the daughter of the surgeon Joel killed in the end of the first game.
    Ellie witnesses this and vows revenge. Oh, wow, where have I heard that plotline before? Maybe in literally every other revenge tale ever told. How original.
    So we have two characters, both on the hunt for revenge after their father/father-figure is murdered. Not starting off good.
    After this wretched, sickening scene of Joel's murder, you'll be happy to know you get to play as the ***** who murdered him, as some sort of twisted way to make you empathize with a character who has no redemption aspect. Then it tasks you with NOT getting her killed, as if I have any reason to not run headlong into the nearest Clicker.
    In addition to this, there's also another scene of a person witnessing their own mother being murdered.
    But the real winner was when the main protagonist, Ellie, kills a pregnant woman. Her revelation that the woman was pregnant is supposed to be traumatic and horrifying, but for what reason other than to make the player want to quit playing is beyond me. Ellie is damaged by not only seeing Joel get his face caved in with a golfclub, but also for inadvertently murdering a pregnant woman. Disturbing is the only word for this kind of story. There are NO redeeming qualities capable of undoing that kind of action.
    The entire game tries to be a statement about violence being bad and revenge being badder, as if the players who bought this game are moronic and unaware. We bought a violent video game and they in turn punished us for doing so by killing a character everyone loved. There's far too much effort to make you think, but with an opening like the death of Joel, you deafened the ears of anyone who may have listened to your shlock.
    And let's not forget that you, Naughty Dog, did this horrendous act to Joel on Father's Day weekend. A large number of people struggle with this holiday, myself included. I wanted to play this game as a distraction from the memories Father's Day brings up. I had a horrible father. Joel is the dad I always wished I would have had. And you murdered him.
    As someone who suffers from crippling depression, this game made me want to die. If I didn't have my new job and hope for the future, this game would have driven me to suicide. It is that bad. I've never had a game make me hate myself for playing it as much as this one did. And right now, in a time when people say they are the most unhappy they've been in decades, you gave everyone a reason to be even sadder. I pray no one is driven to end their own life by your senseless violence, infliction of trauma, and disturbing enjoyment of spitting in the face of fans of the first game, all in the name of "making a statement".
    **** you, Naughty Dog, LLC. You ruined not only this game, but its predecessor. You're all a bunch of torturous monsters and I hope your employees sue you for your slave labor tactics to the point you go under like Telltale Games did before you.    … Expand

    Honestly most dissapointing game of the generation for me. I saw the leaks but still wanted to go in open minded and enjoy the game for what it has to offer. While the gameplay is ok and the grafics are good everything about the story turned out to be even worse than exspected. First time being dissapointed with ND. I really don't get how all those reviewers brought this game up to a 95.
