But it seems like you guys felt the same as Ellie and put your hatred towards your enemy, which in your case is the game itself. I think that's quite the reason for not being able to enjoy and fully understand all characters' motives. Bold story! Ignore the hate this is one of the best games of the generation. Naughty Dog took some serious risks and elevated storytelling in gaming. The title is getting hate for its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters. This hate shows that games need more queer characters or the medium will be forever stuck pandering to basement dwelling misogynists.

I don't get the hate people are giving this. Imho, what a story, that only could give this game 10/10 , but what i really was amazed about was all the small details here and there. Gameplaywise it was enjoyable, smooth and punishing at the right times. And i loved that the trophies were easy to get this time. Now don't go and change that in the sequel! Or anything else

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has lost a lot of what made it special, and part of it is "killing the main character idea" that I wish I could understand the motive by the developers.
To be honest I think this will be the last game that I play from this franchise. I absolutely loved the first game, so much it brought mt to tears, but this one...brought me to tears in anger and shock right at the beginning when I discover they decided to kill the main protagonist.
Make us play with the character that murdered him, etc...
Just poor decisions on Naughty Dog's behalf and I know for a fact that if wasn't for "paid" reviews, this game would have been a lot worse than it is in terms of sales.
Anyway this just demonstrates that you can't win all the time and to me this developer lost it's way and won't seem me purchasing any other game from them in the future.

Regarding the first teaser-trailer: Joel is only in Ellie's head, giving only one possible direction as a theory. It did not promise anything. This was the only logical "theory" that has now been confirmed.
Also, regarding the "scam" of the Release-Date trailer: Joel might have been alive originally and Druckmann changed it later. However, I don’t think so, I think this was done intentionally. Not to fool their audiences but to scare them or something. Yes, the media team made the cuts between scenes too fast, true. But: Like in the first teaser, Joel (as Jessie) here could be a hallucination (he wants her to stop), because she expected Joel, everywhere she goes she has Joel on her mind. You can see her hopeless face, after she sees Jessie’s face.
Well, this was only for explanation reasons. This is not confirmed or anything, but it does make sense.

    Actual review:
I have played a lot of masterpieces, The Last of Us Part II might be the best of them. Personally, I enjoyed other games more (bc this game is mostly not about fun), but purely objectively TLoUPII is the best game, or at least in the top 3 games of all time. I enjoyed it with various emotions, shed tears and laughed. Please don't listen to haters and finish the game first, form your own opinion. The gameplay, story, acting (check out the facial animation), the characters, the graphics are all top-tier. The story could have been better, by that I mean that the order of events could have been structured differently. The pacing certainly isn’t perfect. Certain scenes split the player-base, are completely logical though. Everything of what comes before and after these scenes was done insanely good. The overall game is a masterpiece of writing that I have rarely seen in any media. And no, I have finished a LOT of games, but only this game has captivated me, entertained me that much. I usually rate games based on facts, not necessarily supported by my own opinion and TLoUPII does not deserve anything below 9/10, sorry. It's unbelievable how much work and love (and cruelty) was put into this project.
I hope the PS5 version fixes a few things, adds 60fps and ray-tracing. Maybe there will be an optional story-order to choose from, or additional paths.
We’re still waiting for Multiplayer Mode (as a stand-alone) and it’s coming soon.
I currently give it 96/100. The PS5 version will probably top that.

    Thanks for reading.

The technical and artistic aspects of the game are simply top of the industry and in this regard improves the first part, leaping to a next level facilitated by the advancing technology applied to games (and probably a bigger budget too?).

Playing this game is a gripping and highly enjoyable experience, even if the excess of blood and extreme violence kinda feels a bit unnecessary in some of the fights.

The gameplay felt too similar (almost clonical) to the first game, which is not necessarily a criticism, as I find it to be well balanced, challenging and fun. So why should you change something that works great?

My biggest criticism is the story and character decisions/motivations. As mentioned in many other reviews as far as I could tell, I found the 'revenge above all' motivation too simplistic, repetitive, predictable and even anti-climatic. It's an extreme survival world where I would expect people to focus a bit more on self-preservation with the minimal means they have, and avoid any unnecessary injuries etc as much as possible, as hospitals or doctors are not particularly available... however, we find ourselves constantly forced to put our character in extreme peril just to seek vengeance or something like that... It's a non-essential task most of the time, highly capricious at times, that made it difficult for me to really engage with what we were doing or why we are crossing (again and again) the city side to side just to ask for someone who might know someone, who might lead us to someone who hurt our friend months ago.
When in the original Fallout I'm asked to leave the bunker to search for a highly critical and necessary water filter system that stopped working, I felt the reason why I was travelling post-apocalyptic wastelands and risking everything was 'justified' and necessary. Someone had to do it. On the contrary, most of the time in The last of us 2 I felt very disconnected with our purpose. Thi wasn't the case on the first game either, when looking for a cure sounded like an absolutely understandable objective that justified taking all necessary risk (no cure equals to no hope for anyone, so...).
Also, way too many flashbacks in this game. Some of them confused the hell out of me, between switching timelines and characters, at some point I didn't know what I was doing (and even worse, I stopped caring!).

In any case, a superb game. 8,5/10 for me. Due to the narrative flaws it doesn't reach higher. Technical aspects, art, acting, sounds, music, polished gameplay... so many things are close to a 10.

And what I can say is, The Last of Us 1 is a great game. Great. However, The Last of Us 2 is a game that is impossible to describe. It is a unique experience. Much better than 1 in every way. It is a brutal, credible game and brings us a reflection that I have never seen in any game, film or book. In short: this game is a masterpiece. It is the game that separates adults from children. It is a game that requires the player to have a more mature mindset. It is not a simple video game. The way the story was told is something unique. If you're reading this here and haven't played the game yet: play it, but be there and face it with an open mind and let yourself be allowed and be absolved by the narrative. I still can't get the game out of my head. It is without a doubt one of the best games I have ever played in my life. And the ending is impressive, I cried like a boy and I was bad, very bad. Best of all, it opens up infinite possibilities for The Last of Us 3. It's not just a game, it's an experience. Well I will be something of the most direct, I am from Peru and I did not know whether to translate this into English but well, and after the game I could say that it is a masterpiece, I did not know where to start for me the characters are not sincerely forced since Everything has a purpose because it is the story of each one since it feels that not everyone or no one is the bad guy because each one has done too many things like Ellie thanks to his "revenge" that in the end he does not end up doing it and that's when Most of them complained to Neil Druckmann but no one realized that he also wrote the first installment and that it is politically correct for me there is nothing wrong that depends on each one, honestly Ellie's part I did not enjoy it much since I felt that It was wrong and there was a lot of repetition in eliminating enemies, I feel it unsatisfactory and too repetitive, but the game with what it wants to represent is quite good since The Last of Us Part II is what hatred wants to represent. To the depression we had over the ending and the death of Joel, like when Ellie finds herself overwhelmed by not killing Abby, but not many came to understand the ending and that's what bothered others, Ellie gets to learn the lesson where forgive Abby with Lev and in the end Joel, I feel that it was a good ending and just oh that it is also a lesson for us. The criticism game is getting is well deserved, yes you saw it right, I have never seen a game doing this to a player before, it makes player angry and dissatisfied at points, which is not what games are made for. It's such a different (bad/good) experience, it's like the bulbs when they were invented they were cool but unreliable so people preferred traditional lamps, but they paved the way for the modern lights we see today, that analogy doesn't fit exactly but I hope you got the point. It's a change which comes in generations the game brings a change just like what its predecessor did to story telling in gaming. The story which is talk of the town is multilayered and is not just like a movie but instead as a player you feel it, even the conflicts of character's and player's mind are well predicted in the story, its almost like a overlap between the two, like a player is a different part of character's mind, which is why its painful to continue the game sometimes. It doesn't matter if you chose a bulb or a traditional lamp as your lighting source now at the end you can't stop the evolution. It happened now with the generation's favourite game franchise can be understandably painful for some, but good part is its now a part of the history of this art form. To ease some pain and to help you learn along the game- 'It's not about what you achieve or whats at the end, it's about the journey.'

Some aspects of the story downright contradict the message that the game attempts to forcefeed us - oh yeah, it's kind of an interactive lecture, by the way.

I know Neil said the first game was about love, and this one would be about hate, but he kinda made it so that I hate the game itself. What a shame

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game gets a lot of hate that I think is undeserved because people do not like how this game handled the idea of "Revenge is bad."

I think that this game handled the idea well. Ellie threw away pretty much everything to go for revenge and Abby's story was basically Joel 2.0, an otherwise terrible person gets a shot at redemption through a friendship with someone that they did not have to help or stick around.

The gameplay is 9/10 because the sections controlling the boat sucks, the graphics are 10/10, and I would give the story a solid 9/10 even if it didn't end how most people wanted.

A lot of people have a problem with how this game handled the idea of revenge being bad but then leave glowing reviews for the Red Dead games as well as God of War which are saying pretty much the same thing just in a slightly different manner. Spoilers ahead for both.

Arthur died for nothing in Red Dead 2 because John tried to get revenge on Micah. This led to the events of the first game which led to John dying and his son, who was never supposed to be an outlaw, becoming a continuation of the man that John was.

Kratos went on a murdering spree of the Gods in the first few God of War games and ultimately lost everything. In the 2018 reboot we see a man who is broken and trying to be done with the violence and we see how much it weighs on him now. He spends pretty much the entire game trying to tell his son that revenge is not the way.

My best advice would be to just get the game and give it a go. Best case scenario, you like it like a lot of the fans of the original game did, worst case, you don't like it. For me this is as good as the first game if not just a bit better even if the story is significantly more depressing at the end (not that the first game had a happy ending either).

The game does not match the hype or the reviews on the website. I wonder why such a phenomenon exists. I buy games based on reviews and the reviews are not honest. Just don't raise your expectations. The first game on PS3 was much better. Really fake reviews.

Far, far, far too long. It's like they included a DLC that you have to play between the end of the game and the epilogue (which should have been on the idyllic farm - Ellie should never have gone to Santa Barbara).

There was also no good reason for Ellie to go through all 3 days. She barely escaped with her life from a few scenarios and she could have just turned round and gone home at any time, especially once she found Jesse & discovered Dina was pregnant. Tommy was fine on his own. The stakes were never high enough (unlike the first game where Ellie was going to be the source of a cure). I just spent most of my time thinking what's the point?

I wouldn't have minded playing as Abby - I think it's a good idea to see both sides of a story - but the whole thing was just dragged out far too much. I was bored of playing as Ellie at the end of day 3 and thought I'd finished the game. Then I had to play as Abby for another 10+ hours (which I also got bored of, literally an hour or so into day 1). Some scenes were also very hard when playing on hard.

There was absolutely no reason for Ellie to leave the farm and go after Abby again. It was just pointless. It also annoyed me again because I thought I'd finally finished the game and Ellie had found happiness, only to have her inexplicably throw it all away to go back to hunt for Abby, and again, why? She and Joel were survivors... I think she'd have been glad to have been in love and with Dina. She wouldn't have gone.

In this game I also couldn't help wondering how zombies stay alive. I mean, Ellie goes into a building that's been deserted for 20 years and there are zombies walking around in there? I did think that in the first game but I let it go. In this game though, when she falls through a floor or something and there's a monster waiting for her it was just a farce. But it's a zombie game, so I almost let it go, but couldn't really this time.

I played the first game a second time. I'll never play this again. It was far too long and just wasn't enjoyable (although it looked great).

The story is even worth that they’ve told us in a leaks. I have actually completed the story because I couldn't believe that it is so bad, but it happened to be even worth. Graphics is good but not groundbreaking, gameplay is exactly the same for 25 hours, the production is good, cutscenes excellently executed though poorly written.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What makes a game truly good is if you enjoyed it thoroughly. A good game should be equal parts amazing gameplay and amazing story. Naughty Dog has knocked it out the park again with the Last of Us Part 2 with amazing, fun, and addictive gameplay. But where it fails with its over-ambitious story. It's far too long. Worse yet it runs roughshod over the protagonists of the original game. Joel is retconned as a selfish murderer and Ellie becomes a vengeful vixen. Neil Druckman and his fellow writer Halley Gross brings us an extremely conflicted girl power-driven, social justice laden, white men are bad, white women are great, lesbians are even better game. While I love complicated games and protagonists who are woefully human, hate sequels that do not honor the stakes of what came before. Joel's decision to save Ellie at the end of the original games was not because Joel was a heartless villain, it was because he came to love Ellie as a daughter. His saving Ellie was a sacrifice on his part, not a selfish act. He knew there would be no coming back from what he did, yet he did it anyway to save his daughter. Yet in this game we are presented with the wrongheaded belief what Joel did to save Ellie was wrong, not only wrong but that he deserved a brutal, ignoble, and painful death at the hands a superior ALPHA Women. During her quest for revenge Ellie becomes the villain and Abby is painted as the hero. A bold choice, yes, but amazingly wrongheaded. It's like making a movie from the daughter of a Nazi point of view as she seeks justice for her father who was executed rightfully by Jewish vigilantes for his war crimes. "Child murder" is never okay even if the action of murdering a child has the potential to save billions of lives. Sometimes a sequel should never be made. This was one of those times. Expand

An educational, masterfully crafted and ingeniously told tale that makes you think. Not only in the logical sense, but in an emotional one - and the story is really not about the characters we see. It's about US, about YOU - it uncovers a great deal about how you handle those situations and emotions it depicts. I think this is why some people hated it so badly, because this game made them FEEL strongly, and they couldn't work through their feelings (yet).
The reason I feel the opposite, strongly positive way about it, is because of the success of being able to work through it, and gain a deeper understanding not just about the characters, but about myself (and others around me) too. I actually feel, that this game made me a better person, even if just a notch or two, and I'm glad about that!

Emotional work is rewarding, and those who are willing to put in the time and attention will surely get something out of it. It is dark, brutal, and so very lifelike and brave. I'm holding it an etalon of storytelling in (this genre of) videogames.

I advise you TO read it in full!!!
Yes, you are all so slow-witted?)
Of the majority of all those who commented here - no one understood anything. The meaning of the game is much deeper than you think. Did you not understand at first, did you still have doubts? Try again!
Everything happens the same as happened with the first part, only here the plot is more complex and a little deeper (I'm not saying that it's better, for me it's on an equal footing, but it's more complicated). Even during the passage of the first part, few people thought that the plot was built on the relationship of the characters and everyone did not like the ending, but after just a couple of months, absolutely everyone said that the game was a masterpiece! The way it is.
    But come on...

Cicadas are terrorists/bandits who killed soldiers, hanged them, shot them.... Abby, Owen, Jerry (Abby's father) can be said to be terrorists!
And what if they have a doctor?!
First of all, what makes you think the Doc was the last one in the world?
Secondly, ally that we have that is not human?? She does not have the right to live, since she is immune??
Third, I repeat, Cicadas are terrorists. What if they create a vaccine and do not revive humanity, but want to make the whole world dance to their tune with offended women-jocks at the head.

The cicadas (and in particular Jerry, the neurosurgeon) put the unconscious girl right on the operating table, and she didn't even Wake up after drinking a lot of water.

My opinion: Ellie is a harmless girl, she didn't just kill people, she didn't do anything wrong. Joel is the same.(Yes, he'd had his sins before, but not when he was with Ellie, and it wasn't about cicadas.) Cicadas, had to wait until Ellie wakes up, agrees to the operation, also ask Joel's opinion, because Ellie has become almost like a daughter for Joel, and here they want some incomprehensible people, according to the soldiers/ state/ civilians - terrorists, to cut her to make a supposedly "vaccine".
Ellie could easily have refused, having come all this way with Joel and found out that she wouldn't survive the operation. There are no hopeless situations - Ellie could say: "Guys, I'm only 15 (at the time of the ending, she was 15), I didn't see the world.... Let me live, it's my right, I'm a man like you. After some time, when I decide to do it, we will do it. Maybe when I'm old, but at the same time, Jerry will teach other doctors how to perform this operation and try to make vaccines."TK at that moment, only he could hold it. And that's it, there would be no conflicts.

You can say that while Ellie will live to an old age, many will already die or she will die, but THINK with YOUR BRAIN at some point, this is her life and she has the right to dispose of as she wants.... the same way you manage your own lives, what's worse than that?

I think Joel did the right thing. He gave Ellie the right to live, although she didn't really understand it, but I hope she will in the future. And it's all Jerry's fault, (Abby's father), THAT he would have made the VACCINE, and it didn't work, what's next? He would have just killed the child....
    And killed how?
I didn't give her a chance to recover.
He forced Marlin to do this, because she was initially against it, and Jerry began to persuade her to perform the operation, that is, to kill Ellie FOR nothing, for the sake of some hope, although she knew Ellie from the cradle and promised her mother to look after her.
I taught other people about it, and in General I forced all the situations that followed - Jerry. Yes, perhaps he wanted to do the best, help humanity, and so on, but the approach he chose..... Oh, what is not correct.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original game was one of the best games I ever played, the story was great and the two main characters, Joel and Ellie, were the main reason I liked the game so much. Just completed the Part II, totally disappointed!

The story was bad, and the characters you loved in the original were ruined or destroyed. The worst part was that you were forced to play Abby who brutally murdered Joel so that you may like her and won't feel bad when Ellie let her live in their final fight.

In the original game, that damned doctor was trying to kill Ellie to make a so-called vaccine, but when the fireflies woman asked him "will you do it if she is your daughter?", he simply could not answer the question, apparently he can sacrifice other innocent people but not his daughter. So what is wrong with Joel when he killed the doctor to save Ellie who he cared about so much by the end of their journey after losing his own daughter at the beginning of the story? The game creator created a revenge theme in the sequel, it's a shame on you trying to un-justify Ellie's revenge while trying to justify the other.

This game also tried hard to tarnish the relationship between Joel and Ellie built and developed in the original game. Why did Ellie hate Joel so much in this game? Was it because Joel saved her and prevented her from being made a vaccine to save the humanity? Give me a break, that's so ridiculous! The game even let Ellie lost two fingers, so she could no longer play the guitar Joel gave to her and left it behind at the end of the game, what a joke!

Work with light is on high level. Nevertheless I would like to notice that we were waiting this game for 7 years. So THE GREATEST minus is absense of new gameplay mechanics. When i was playing this game my fillings was like im playing well made remaster of the first part. So there is literally nothing new, i mean fundamentally new mechanics. The second minus about the plot. When i was playing the first part i was filling the synergy between myself and the character im playing for. In this part i cannot do this. Even trying to force myself. Maybe if Naughty Dog wouldn't concentrate on things which are not deserve it, so plot could be much better. Most people is just mad cause they wanted a "happy ending" this game feels like the real life. No one is special, not even your main characters.
The game makes you feel many emotions.

    Increíble.
No todos tienen la madurez y flexibilidad para ser espectador y jugador de una historia impredecible y original.

Acabo de terminar The Last of Us Part II

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic, incredible game, I'm depressed for weeks thanks to him, the best game I've ever played in my life (believe me, there were few), a true work of art, to those who criticize I ask you to answer me, if the story wasn't that which was going to be? ellie and joel going to avenge dina? do me a favor right. Anyone who didn't like the ending certainly didn't empathize with abby, I know she killed our dear and loved Joel, but don't be blinded by hatred like Tommy, try to understand, the game will become even better if you can. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
