Ok so this review is based on 2/3 days play on my PS4.
So far the main campaign is well drawn and excellent to play through with smooth game-play and an exciting story told from the p.o.v. of an imperial special forces soldier and her bid to stall and then counter the rebellion.
On-line, well, very smooth game-play again but I have been kicked with an error message a couple of times

Overall this game deserves at least a sold 8. If you love Star Wars I'd say this is a must, but even if you don't it's a very solid game with lots of content.

It's time we as gamers and consumers take a stand and let greedy companies realize this continuing trend of pay to play, then pay some more, is unacceptable.

First off - the graphics are pretty great on ps4. The story is ok when you are playing as Versio (think Italian family drama in space), it falls down when you get janked into some hero and their poorly inserted and written side quest.

It's pretty disappointing to see a game that could obviously have been great fail so hard at it - 8 for graphics, 7 for sound, 6 for story but the thing

It's pretty disappointing to see a game that could obviously have been great fail so hard at it - 8 for graphics, 7 for sound, 6 for story but the thing that kills it all are the combat mechanics. You run around as a jerky meat puppet, easily felled by a stray blaster shot. Enemies get mowed down similarly easy - all those storm troopers might as well wear bikinis for all that their armor is worth.

This makes the game feel utterly unrealistic, and walking through multiplayer as well as story missions feels more like avoiding random deaths then a test of skill and acquired powers.

it doesn't help that every mission and character comes with a different button layout.

Overall, I expected a lot more, and I am not even upset about the stupid micro transactions.

The first Battlefront was an insult to gaming. I'm still waiting for EA to apologise to the customers who bought it on day 1 to receive just 5 maps, then they had the audacity to charge for the rest of the game through a season pass. If EA had had the decency to give away the season pass as an apology then they may have saved a few customers who would be willing to purchase Battlefront 2. Thankfully because of their poor business practice I wasn't foolish enough to fall for the nostalgic advertising that sucked me in the first time and instead suffered the slight misfortune of playing Battlefront 2 at a friends, thankfully saving me from spending money on it.

Battlefront 2 is an even bigger let down than the 1st game and has in no way improved. The game looks pretty but it's a free to play model disguised as a AAA title. To make matters worse EA exposed them selves as the selfish frauds they are when making an insulting post claiming pay to win transaction were in the game but they made the epic hero's so hard to get to give players a sense of achievement when they finally unlocked them. It's been worked out it would take around 6000 hours to unlock all the content behind paywalls by playing the game.

Battlefront is the epitome of everything wrong with modern gaming. They have slyly appealed a game to Starwars fans with the full intention of ripping them off.

    Shame on you EA.

Besides, if you want to progress without spending more money, then expect to waste so much time. Because you know what? Is not a competitive multiplayer shooter game anymore and it is due it's rewards mechanic, which compensate equally every player at the end of the match, no matter how much effort you did, no matter if you crush the enemy by your own, no matter if were on the losing team. The game will reward you like the laziest person in the battle. So. Broken.

People, believe me on this: I purchased the Deluxe edition, got into the game and was welcomed with 4 lootboxes that gave me IMMEDIATE advantages over other players. And guess what? It still didn't matter because other people had purchased even more lootboxes besides the free ones and on my very first match I was obliterated with no chance of fighting back and there was a Luke Skywalker roaming when he still costed 60.000 credits.

On my second match, the situation reversed: players had no cards and I was almost impossible to beat. 1 v 1 or 2 v 1 I always dominated. That is when I drew the line about the unfairness: refunded my copy and said goodbye to this trash forever.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT buy this game and do not support this kind of business behavior.

I am not trying to cry or hate but just stating valid facts. Also, performing well in the multiplayer yields very little credits, so people will just throw the match and end it early for fast credits.....so whats the point of playing and having fun when people are just thorwing the matches because they want to get the loot boxes. I really don't get all this hate. The game is better from all points of view compared to the game from 2015, except for the crate system. Everything is improved except for let's say customization. You can no longer select races for the Resistance or Rebels and you only have 4 weapons per class. I gave it an 8 only because of the crate system, otherwise it's a 9 or even 10. Of course, II really don't get all this hate. Other companies simply turned a blind eye and some patches and that was all. I won't buy any crate in the game with in-game credits and definitely not real money. I keep my in-game credits only to buy heroes. If this game didn't have the crate system it would have been so great. Expand

I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a campaign so much. Iden and her squadmates are actually great characters and well-acted. Iden in particular is tough and resourceful, and a welcome addition to the broader universe. The campaign's story bridges Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens, which adds some nuggets of mystery to the new trilogy. At times the campaign feels a bit 'on rails' where the tension is entirely scripted and regardless of how long it takes you to achieve the goal you will achieve it, but overall I didn't notice, I was having too much fun. Also, the challenge curve is kind of all over the place. Most levels are quite easy but every now and then they will surprise you with a ridiculously tough scenario. The cut-scenes are beautiful and some of the best in recent memory. It was particularly cool to see the broadside cannons on the Star Destroyers, something we never saw in the movies. Also if you're a fan of the X-Wing miniatures game, the Imperial Raider gets serious screen time here!
Multiplayer is fun and I enjoy it more than Battlefront 1. I feel like you live a few seconds longer and it's no longer quite the meat grinder. The maps are varied and jaw-dropping in scope and action. The amount of ambient action going on is wild, for instance when battling around the Mos Eisley Cantina droids scurry about as NPC stormtroopers hassle locals, Dewbacks lumber by, and if you're in the air you can spot a Sandcrawler on the edge of town. Just loaded with details that make each world super rich. As for the loot crates, yes it is frustrating to leave so much class progression up to what is essentially a dice roll, but I'm awful at the game and earn a few crates every night. I do hope they add more trooper skins and also the ability to squad up with friends. It's a very weird omission that you can't stick with your friends, each time you die you're plopped into a random squad making coordinated teamwork basically nonexistent.
The offline modes are also very fun, although I wish there was an option to replay the combat scenarios with any hero you want.
Overall I like this game leaps and bounds over Battlefront 1 and as a Star Wars fan they just knocked it out of the park with the overall atmosphere and details.

But, if we're gonna be honest, when someone buys this they're not going to think "I want to play as Bassk or Lando" because the two characters are not nearly as popular as the many other iconic heroes like General Grievous or Obi-Wan. All the multiplayer modes are fun though, except Heroes vs. Villains has a poorly made system in my opinion. A game with potential, spoiled at its core by an unrewarding and manipulative progression system.

After being gifted the game I decided to try it out knowing my money personally won't be going to EA. This review will be based around the multiplayer aspect as that is the part I've experienced most, with only a small amount of time in the arcade mode. The moment to moment gameplay is fairly enjoyable, due mainly to the frantic movement in the action and the gorgeous environments and great sound design. Where the gameplay suffers is the vastly variable (and inherently unfair) builds resulting from the progression design.

Where most FPS games I've enjoyed either have rewards that are purely aesthetic or upgrades that reward the player for spending time playing with certain classes or equipment, and provide minor upgrades (or at the very least, upgrades balanced out by providing both positive and negatives to the player), BF2 instead offers major upgrades with little to no disadvantages, and only rewards them through the gambling system of the lootboxes.

I'm not really under any impression that someone reading this review will be hearing about the lootbox problem for the first time, but in my opinion the problems with this implementation are as follows:

    1. The rewards have practically nothing to do with your gameplay. While some equipment is locked behind specific achievements the majority of upgrades are presented through loot boxes purchased with in game currency (rewarded more for time spent in the game than for performance or accomplishments).

    2. The lootboxes provide rewards that, almost always, are direct upgrades to the classes in the game and ruin any sense of balance to the gameplay. This leads to people with better cards having an unreasonable advantage over others, for no reason other than luck. Not only are the upgrades themselves randomly rewarded but they also have levels in themselves which can drastically change how much the player will be affected by using that upgrade. This problem could potentially be solved by the upgrades having associated negatives to give them more of a flavour to the gameplay rather than a direct upgrade.

    3. The real world cost. At the time of writing this there is no way in game to use real world money to purchase lootboxes. However, EA have openly admitted that they plan to reintroduce this system to the game (right now the page to spend money is still available to look at in game, but the page contents have been removed). It is clear that the random nature of the reward system is to manipulate players into spending money in an effort to get better upgrades, to either give themselves an advantage over others without those upgrades or to feel on par with those who already have them. This feels like it was the driving factor for a lot of the design choices in the progression system and forces the game to become stale and unrewarding to those who are unwilling to buy into the system.

I feel like a 3 is a fair review score for BF2, as the base gameplay allows the player to garner some enjoyment, but it is ultimately spoiled by the design choices made for the sake of shareholders wallets over the enjoyment of the players. I would not recommend buying this game to even the biggest fan of Star Wars and I hope that the license for Star Wars games end up in the hands of a company less willing to manipulate the player base for a quick buck.

I don’t like the concept of gamble boxes, especially for single player games, the gaming industry needs to stop that or they will ruin gaming.

But that being said I think in this game the *perception* by people is worse that reality (not to say there isn’t some bases to their complaints), but the developers have made adjustments to deal with some concerns of the community.

Initially it may seem you are not making much progress, but you do get a steady amount of crafting points that you can use to unlock abilities (star cards), there are side challenges that will give you rewards and as you open more and more box, they get cheaper since you will get duplicates (that are converted into credits).

Tip: I would recommend just opening up the hero creates box at first since you can open two for about the same cost of the trooper create. This will give you more crafting parts and a good chance to get a trooper card anyways.

Graphics/Map 10, Absolutely amazing, the attention to detail to all the vehicles, ships, troops. Some maps are huge and look like they were recreated from actual sets from the movie.
Sound/Music 10, Great sound effects, when the Heroes spawn you hear their theme sound, they will say lines from the movies, to small things like: droid army funny little sayings, to Boba Fett ship’s bomb sound from the prequel movie.
Performance 9.5, Playing the standard PS4 the game very very infrequently freezes for a split second, but considering every thing that are happening in the battles with 40 players this game runs extremely smoothly.
Fun 9, The class system works really well allowing you to play specific roles and builds, you gain battle points that you can use to spawn in as one of large number of reinforcements / heroes. Space combat being skill based is challenging at first but satisfyingly. You do die very easy which can be a little frustrating, specially stating out. For an average skill player it can be difficult to get to play the hero, due to the fact the better players can build up battle points faster and get the hero first.
Value 10, After playing for over 48 hrs I still haven’t tried every game type, vehicles/ships and hero. About half the heroes are unlock initially (requiring unlocking the rest with ingame credits). This game is a great value, considering that also there is a single player campaign, offline arcade mode and all future content is free.

    EDIT:
Campaign 7, I finished playing the campaign mode. I enjoyed the visuals and most of the missions, but some missions seem short and lackluster. The story jumps through different periods of time and felt to me disjointed but not overly bad. Likable characters, get to play as some of the iconic heroes. The development of the main character story seems linear. BIG issue with the the campaign is that it is short (for me it was ~6hrs). Also too easy on the recommended difficulty (recommend playing on the TOP difficulty level).

It was a limited selection but I played endless hours of star fighter combats. The long and short of it is, if you’re not the sort to play multiplayer, dont’ buy this game. I say this as a huge Star Wars fan. Expand

This is a lie, and everybody knows it. Microtransaction were always apart of this game's business model. Proof is that the game's progression system is broken now that a player can't pay-to-win.

A funny story, I went for a meal in my local restaurant I asked for Chilli which I paid for. Upon receiving my Chilli I noticed I wasn't provided a knife and fork, I requested a knife and fork but was told I had to pay extra, so I paid extra and they brought over a box, I opened the box and inside was a napkin and a spoon, I complained and was told I needed to pay again so I did and I wasA funny story, I went for a meal in my local restaurant I asked for Chilli which I paid for. You wouldn't accept this in a restaurant for a meal you already paid for so why in a game? Expand

Hard to play with friends, not fun to progress unless you wanna spend extra money, which I don't. Just a money grab and a disgrace to an amazing franchise. Just play the old Battlefront II, it has everything you could want, we don't need a new one.

I was really looking forward to buying this game, but I felt sick after the release and the state of the game. A short campaign and pay-to-win system for 60€ is just too much. Thanks for helping me decide if I should get Origin Access, guess what my choice was.

Third time I have changed my review... started at a 10, got frustrated with the loot crtAes and changed to zero, and now after a few more days playing and figuring out the progression system, I am settling at 8. It's a remarkably fun game; the single player is good despite what reviewers say, and the multiplayer really shines. Now that I figured out my way around the progression system I am unlocking game-earned loot crates rapidly, and have unlocked multiple heroes and decked out all my troopers with cards. I haven't even had the game a whole week. The negative feedback is totally warranted and the game would have been an easy 10/10 if it wasn't designed around a payed loot system, but now that I have had a significant amount of time in game I can say with certainly that it is not nearly as bad as people say. The main key is playing a little of each trooper and the other game modes. Doing his I am raking in credits rapidly and have tons of crafting parts to upgrade what I want. Focusing on one class or mode will definitely get you stuck in a pointless grind. Expand

Pretty solid game overall but... Why are there lootboxes in a 60€ game????????? I hope belgium can enforce the microtransactions in Europe, would be a strong signal for AAA companies to stop this nonsense

To the person who said loot boxes are necessary. Are you mad?!? it's disgraceful. to provide so little in a full price game. it's unheard of in a top tier game. Hasn't it been worked out you would need to spend thousands of pounds to unlock everything. That's MAD.

Excellent online action offers hours of Stormtooper-shooting fun, but the so-so campaign stumbles, while cynical loot crates leave a sour taste. [Jan 2017, p.83]

Star Wars Battlefront II provides a greater ambition than the previous installment. It has powerful war scenes, a brand new single player mode, and shows a much more magnificent Star Wars Universe. But just like the Jedi should be ware of the dark side of the Force, this game also meets some similar situations, such as beleaguered microtransaction elements and character growth problems. The first 10 hours of this game is full of surprises; however, the further you play this game, the more disappointed you will get.

Although game has huge problems with p2w microtransactions, it is still a good and fun gameplay experience with stunning visuals.
