Lootboxes have been removed for a long time, our fan favorite heroes such as Anakin, Obi-Wan, Grievous, and Dooku were added into the game, requested reinforcements like the ARC Trooper, Clone Commando, Commando Droid etc. were added, and even Capital Supremacy, a call back to the original Battlefront 2's famous game-mode of control points and interior ship battles, was added into the game. It's a shame EA cancelled the game when they did, because if they let it go on a little longer it likely would have become the best Star Wars game out there with heroes like Ahsoka, Ventress, Padme, and Cad Bane that were in development. Even still, this is one of the best Star Wars experiences you can have, and I could not recommend it more. Expand

I try to get used to the feel of the game, but within 2 minutes I'm already being destroyed repeatedly by a level 500+ player whose already gotten a hero. So you can nowWhile its legacy and metascore will forever be tarnished due to its rightfully criticized faults at launch, much like the Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3 before it a lot of work went into Battlefront II post-release in order to turn it into something fans can appreciate. In this case, the game has been almost entirely scrubbed free of microtransactions and P2W mechanics. So you can now experience all of its solid content without having to suffer through EA's greed.

The game's meat may come from its competitive multiplayer, but the single-player campaign is really underappreciated. Set immediately after the events of RotJ, the plot puts you in the role of an elite Imperial trooper during the Empire's final days. I had no previous interest in this is a period of the timeline, but due to the quality of its writing and acting I quickly became invested in the adventure from a narrative standpoint. Not least of all because approaching the conflict from a viewpoint other than that of the Rebel Alliance allowed for some surprising insights into how the other side saw the war, as well as there being cool revelations into things like how all those destroyed ships we saw on Jakku in The Force Awakens got there.

Of course I was also onboard with the gameplay side of it as well. It's a mix of boots on the ground action and aerial dogfighting strung together by memorable setpieces and the occasional chance to play as fan favorite characters like Han Solo or Princess Leia. Essentially, it's the Star Wars themed Call of Duty I never knew I wanted. The brevity and relative simplicity of it's mission design keep it from being terribly replayable however. So in order to get your money's worth you're going to need an internet connection.

The online portion of Battlefront II offers a lot of variety in terms on modes, maps, and playable characters. There's easily enough here to keep you coming back for hundreds of hours. Provided you get past the initial impressions that is. The multiplayer can be tough to get into at first due to how awful the starting weapons are, as well as the upgradable "star cards" that increase your chosen classes' overall effectiveness being locked behind some level requirements that are pretty hefty given what a disadvantage you're at against more experienced players without them. It also has the least reliable aiming I've seen in a shooter's competitive half since Duke Nukem Forever. All of this is somewhat offset by the game's arcade and cooperative options which allow you to find your footing without having to face other people, but honestly has playing matches against AI bots ever been fun?

What makes Battlefront II worth sticking with until you unlock better blasters and find the combination of star cards that works best for you in spite of all this is simply the fact that it's bloody Star Wars. Developer DICE pulled material from across every era of the franchise. Which means you can participate in the biggest battles from each trilogy while being immersed in sound design that's authentic to the films and the stunning visuals of the Frostbite engine.

Most matches start off with you selecting one of four basic troop types. The points you earn by completing objectives and getting kills can be spent on stronger units and vehicles that feel exactly like you would expect based on what you've seen in theaters. This extends to the playable heroes as well. Familiar faces like Yoda, Rey, and more can be selected and act as powerhouses that can change the entire course of a game depending on your skill level. As frustrating as it can be to get repeatedly killed by some lightsaber user, it never feels unfair as a lot of time must be invested in order to master each character's abilities. You can't say they didn't earn the victory as someone else could choose the same jedi and get mowed down instantly. Plus, it makes sense that Darth Vader would leave legions dead at his feet.

The only time all this fidelity is a problem is when it comes to the map design. Each locale is gorgeous and a blast to run around in because of all the little touches that sell the feeling of actually being in the Star Wars universe, but the layouts are faithful to a fault. Their arrangements may make sense for a film, but feel haphazard in a video game. Some locations suffer from choke points and zones that are too exposed to effectively defend or are too closed off to launch a proper attack on. All things that hurt the objective based modes, particularly when they give one team an unfair leg up over the other.

There's plenty one could take issue with in Battlefront II, but it's worst problems (the money-grubbing) are now behind it. DICE succeeded at what they set out to do. Namely, delivering the bombastic thrill of the movies while letting you take part in signature events as a key player in them. As a Star Wars fan, I couldn't ask for much more even if there is still room for improvement.

Worst balancing system when it comes to abilities for certain characters. Yoda’s leap attack being able to go through blocks like what? It’s basically a guaranteed free hit when you just stand there trying to block it FORCING you to have to CONSTANTLY dodge. Which also makes for poorly made mechanics and gameplay just looks like a bugfest when the enemy is constantly dodging and being rubberbanded after you thought you had a hit. So many more things wrong with this **** game. Mind you it was made by a development team that SPECIALIZE in SPORT **** GAMES not any shooters or first person action games. _ L Expand

SWBF2 is a mix of good and less good things. I bought it way after the microtransactions scandal, so I’ll pass that part (but keeping in mind it still happened).

There is a lot of content when it comes to gameplay: many characters and some vehicles, each of them having their own abilities, which brings a lot of variation possibilities. The number of maps is more than decent as well, and so is the number of game modes. I personally have a preference for coop, despite the many disconnects. The problem with competitive MP is that it all comes down to your character’s level. Someone having maxed his character’s abilities out is necessarily going to crush anyone else who doesn’t. On one side of things that creates something to grind for, which is perfectly acceptable in coop, but it ruins the competitive modes of the game. Confrontations with maxed out players are so unbalanced when you are a beginner. And I don’t see that bringing any good. This is even more dramatic in the spaceship mode, where the higher level you are, the more health your ship has…

To come back on positive aspects, I could also state the fact I never encountered any network problem playing online with friends. Or I could also note the nice artistic direction for the campaign (which is unfortunately short and quite uninteresting story-wise and gameplay-wise).

Sadly, that’s all I can think of for the good things of the game. It’s quite honestly a very normal game having nothing more to show than what the competition already has. It is below the quality of a good Battlefield game Multiplayer speaking for example. In this game’s MP, I hate to see the heroes constantly spammed (I don’t wish to wait in the lobby until one of them is available on the team). I also hate to see how OP they are. Heroes are almost impossible to kill if you engage them with a normal soldier (which represents 80% of your time in MP) and that is super frustrating.

Lastly, I want to come back on the campaign. As I said it has a good artistic direction, but it also has a very bad AI, and the scenario is way too cliché. At no moment at all were I thrilled by the idea of progressing in the campaign to know more about the story. It is just not interesting. Moreover, the gameplay in the campaign is very dull and doesn’t bring anything more than what the MP modes already offer. The campaign is thus virtually useless in my opinion because the story isn’t even good.

In conclusion, SWBF2 is a just a decent FPS. It may be more than that for die-hard Star Wars fans, as it is full of characters. That said, combat can be fade in this game, and it has all the problems I stated above. That’s why I believe that the only people who will love this game are part of a small niche. But for players like me, it just isn’t good enough for me to ever go back on it now that I finished it.

Just skip EA games as much as possible until they stop doing this to their customers. I'm not a SW fan and I got this game thanks to PS+. Reverse these sentences and I'd've given this "game" a 0/10.

A much improved game from what it was in 2017, lootboxes and micro-transactions have been entirely removed, and you can get a great offer on it now, I have hundreds of hours logged. My only complaint is that it is missing certain heroes such as Padme, Jango Fett, Asajj Ventress and Asokha Tano.

Who would’ve thought I’d be here reviewing this three years later? I said it recently when I talked about “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,” but I am a huge outsider to the “Star Wars” franchise. Be that as it may, as an extreme lover of gaming, I’m willing to play a game based on source material I’m not familiar with/fond of if the game interests me. In the case of “Star Wars Battlefront II,” though, a lot of my interest in this game stemmed from the fact that…well, it’s free on PlayStation Plus this month. Yeah, that’s about it. Though, I must also say that I was intrigued when I heard so many people say that the game has been improved immensely from the horror show that was its launch. Having played through the game, has it? Well…I guess? If you’re a diehard multiplayer gamer, maybe, but otherwise, as someone who is more of a single-player gamer that enjoys campaigns…the game is definitely still a mess.
In terms of the positives, I can definitely say that “Star Wars Battlefront II” looks great. Visually, it’s excellent all-around, and the sound design is very good, making this a game that certainly looks and sounds the part as a piece of “Star Wars” media. Beyond that, though…I mean, I guess the game is playable? I didn’t find too many bugs to speak of, the controls are solid enough, and occasionally the multiplayer can have its fun moments? Yeah, that’s the best that I can say about the gameplay as a whole in this game: it’s functional. It works for what it’s going for, and I guess on the outside, I can respect that EA and DICE managed to reverse course and actually improve the game for its player base.
That’s about the most that I can say in terms of positives for the game, though, and no, this isn’t gonna be me lowering the score because of the “microtransactions controversy,” because honestly, a lot of that flew over my head when the game came out in 2017. My fundamental issues with the game lie in other areas, for example, the single-player campaign that I mentioned earlier. I’ll be honest with you, what’s disappointed me more than some of the microtransaction drama and PR stuff that plagued the game early on is how much EA hyped up the campaign for the game, only for it to turn out completely pitiful. Even as a non-fan of the “Star Wars” series, the story is predictable and sloppy, the campaign itself is short, and honestly, while I’m glad so many people like the gameplay as a whole in this game…I’m sorry, but I don’t. This game is UNBELIEVABLY bland, there is not a single thing to the gameplay that I personally found special or gripping whatsoever. It’s just a generic third-person shooter that’s been painted over with a “Star Wars” theme to make it seem more appealing when it’s really not. The shooting honestly feels really unfulfilling to me, the space battles feel like DICE kinda just saying, “here, damn” and not really caring what fans want, the mission structure is completely generic, and honestly, the only time I had fun with the game was when I got to play as Luke Skywalker and wield a lightsaber. And even then, that’s one level out of the 13 in the campaign (counting the prologue), I can assure you that it is not worth playing the campaign solely for that one level. The game will often throw massive waves of enemies at you all at once and try to masquerade it around as “difficulty” when it’s really just awful game design. At its core, while I’m glad so many people have fun with the game, my fundamental issue with it is that, at its core, the game is sleep-inducingly bland. Even for the short length of its campaign, the game often feels like it overstays its welcome, and it’s easily one of the most dull experiences I’ve had with a game.
Yeah…this was really bad. Has it been improved from its disastrous launch? Sure, I guess, and the fans seem to think so, which is great, but honestly, this game feels like it doesn’t matter. It still just feels bland, generic and shallow, almost like it desecrates the “Star Wars” series by applying its characters in a half-assed way over a formulaic, paint-by-numbers third-person shooter without any of the spirit of charm that’s helped this series endure for so long. I’ve heard a lot of people talk about how Disney destroyed the “Star Wars” franchise, and while I wouldn’t know because I haven’t seen the recent films, I think EA has certainly not done the series any favors, and at this point, they’re lucky that “Jedi: Fallen Order” was such a great game and that Respawn saved the day and gave them a diamond in the rough. Honestly, if you want a great “Star Wars” game, go play that. “Jedi: Fallen Order” is a far better game, and far more worth your time than this shallow bastardization. Skip “Battlefront II” and live in comfort knowing that you’re not missing much.
Final rating: 3 out of 10 “Awful”

There few maps and modes to play, but all gets repetitive quickly due to the mentioned lack of progression.
    - The only positive thing I could say is that the game looks nice (which is why I am giving a 2 instead of a 1). But DICE seems to be falling in disgrace, obviously due to EA, a.k.a. the studio destroyer, the ultimate culprit of this mess.

So, I'll begin by making some things clear:
This game has no lootboxes/microtransactions/pay-to-win or any other **** of this sort anymore.
EA removed them after considerably (and more than justified) fan outcry. Some people even said Disney CEO stepped in, because this game controversies at launch wasn't helping Star Wars as a whole, specially since they were dealing with the Ep VIII controversy as well. If it happened or not? Well I think it did, but I'll never know. Anyway, onto the review:

After the lackluster Battlefront 2015, EA brought us this game which improved in almost every single way. Especially gameplay and content wise. We have all eras represented with a phenomenal audiovisual fidelity. New content was added for free (still weird to say that out loud lol) for more than two years. That included new maps, heroes, reinforcements, skins, game modes and more. Also, communication with the dev team improved considerably and this was crucial for this game's turn around.
I was a fan of the original BFII and stayed away from this game for as long as I could, but I could not resist checking it out after I saw gameplay and new Clone Wars content coming to this game. They even brought the voice actors from the series to voice the characters. As a result, the game feels like a very authentic Star Wars experience well worth the Star Wars name. Sound design, graphics and presentation all give that Star Wars feeling that we always wanted the new movies to have. Heck, even the sequel trilogy looks good on this game. Playing as the Sith Trooper is awesome!

Now, this still isn't a perfect game, so let's talk about the flaws:
This is mainly a multiplayer game, so don't expect too much from single player content. The campaign is very iffy, with a weak and predictable plot. It has its moments, but it never achieves anything great. There's also Arcade and Instant Action, which are nice but some maps that are available on multiplayer matches aren't available offline for some dumb reason.
Some multiplayer modes are lacking too. As an example, the last update, that included the Original Trilogy maps to Supremacy (think Conquest mode from the old BFII, but with capital ships added), does not include the capital ships and that limits gameplay for this era, making it inferior to Clone Wars and Sequel eras.
Also, bugs. Oh God, there is a lot of bugs. Matchmaking sometimes go completely goes awry, force abilities can sometimes make your character shake like crazy and some heroes are almost outright broken. During the content seasons the developers constantly introduced new bugs, broke heroes and made unnecessary buffs/nerfs to troopers and reinforcements. Now that the game is not updated anymore, we have Grievous and Darth Vader as killing machines, Anakin with an ability thats basically a suicide button and Chewbacca just... unusable in almost every game mode. Other heroes are fine, tho.

This game is discounted most of the time, so it won't even be a big of an investment. Oh, by the way, if you like to unlock skins and cosmetics by your own, stick with the regular edition. EA recently launched a Celebration Edition, but the only difference is that it has all the skins unlocked by default.

So, that is it. Don't let the controversy this game had at launch cloud your judgement. If you are a fan of Star Wars, this is the game you are looking for. The servers are very active and you will find fun matches all the time, even with all the flaws.

The multiplayer can be enjoyable at times, but suffers from an extremely slow progression system. The cards that upgrade your characters can give veteran players an unfair advantage and unlocking new weapons takes an insane amount of time. What results in this is frustrating multiplayer matches where you feel like you aren't contributing to the team and are simply grinding for more XP.

The Starfighter Assault mode is the best mode in the game and does not suffer the same issues as the standard multiplayer matches.

Overall, the core gameplay just isn't very fun and feels clunky. While I commend the developers for fixing the loot box issues, the game unfortunately just isn't all that great.

The grapic is good but that can't be the standard of ea. It's a shame and very disappointing that the predecessor from 2005 is way better in the terms of fun and addiction. I can't even give the a game one point for the graphic because battlefront isn't about graphics, it's about so much more.

2.5 years later, this game makes a huge comeback in the gaming industry. It adds new interesting game modes like Extraction and Ewok Hunt, adds new character heroes, adds new trooper factions, adds weapon fixes/balancing, and it even got rid of the controversial loot box system. But the campaign is still manure, which lowers one rating from a 10.

Well, well, this game`s review will probably be very hard to write. because of the mixed feelings surrounding my head. As a shooter, the game is not that bad, the gameplay is enjoyable and the Star Wars theme is very well done. During 3 years, the developers have been giving us new content at a regular basis, adding important characters and good game modes.

The problem is the gambling, the feeling that EA did never cared about making a good sequel, only caring about how to robe the players with micro-transactions in a 70€ game. This is shameful, completely embarrassing, and this should be remembered for the future, because the difference between videogame companies that try to steal us and the ones that don`t is the quantity of money we spend in both groups.

This game is absolute violation of basic gaming values. Casino technics and microtransaction hell. Don't buy.

I know this game came out nearly three years ago, but this game has been approved upon. The graphics are solid, the gameplay makes you grind yes but it's worth it. Has pretty much every Star Wars character you think of, it WAS at least on sale for only 10 dollars on PSN recently and has a decent campaign mode.

The greatest redemption story in recent video gaming memory. While EA surely does not deserve praise for how they handled micro-transactions at the beginning of this games' lifespan, DICE did a fantastic job supporting this game until EA pulled the plug.

Sure, there are imbalances and content that could be added in the future, but the game is just wonderful in it's current state.

In the end, DICE make a great game with a great free support. I ask everyone to make raiting higher for our thank to developers team.

Excellent online action offers hours of Stormtooper-shooting fun, but the so-so campaign stumbles, while cynical loot crates leave a sour taste. [Jan 2017, p.83]

Star Wars Battlefront II provides a greater ambition than the previous installment. It has powerful war scenes, a brand new single player mode, and shows a much more magnificent Star Wars Universe. But just like the Jedi should be ware of the dark side of the Force, this game also meets some similar situations, such as beleaguered microtransaction elements and character growth problems. The first 10 hours of this game is full of surprises; however, the further you play this game, the more disappointed you will get.

Although game has huge problems with p2w microtransactions, it is still a good and fun gameplay experience with stunning visuals.
