Land on planet, aim laser at rock, find building, talk to alien, get in ship, take off, repeat. There you have No Man's Sky in a nutshell. I get the whole "imagine your own adventure thing," being a writer myself. However, that would be like picking up the most hyped up book of the year, finding it had one chapter and 750 blank pages. I would NOT RECOMMEND this game at all! Not to mention, the developers straight up lied about half the features like multiplayer... Expand

This is not the game. Its a hoax. All that was promised is not there. You can't even complete the game. Star map will vanish after you reach 1000 light years away from the "center" and then you can't go nowhere! I hope some rich person will sue the company for false promises! Those organizing this money scam should go to jail for very long time!

After more than 40 hours in this game, I have to give it an 8. I've played games for 40 years now, and relatively few have held my attention the way NMS does. It's not fair or even realistic to compare this game to others, such as Minecraft, unless it is in the context of it being something new and different. This is not a world-building game like Minecraft. It's not a story-driven FPS like Half Life. It's something all its own. Hello Games have created something very special in No Man's Sky, and it is unfair to give it low marks because it doesn't live up to the expectations of everyone out there that was looking for the 'be all and end all' universe sandbox game. Save your cries of "Sean lied to us!", and grow up. No Man's Sky is a work of art, and I am absolutely sure that Sean Murray and Hello Games are not done with their painting yet. Yes, it was probably released a bit too soon. Yes, it could use additional content. Yes, there are some bugs. But in the end, this game held the attention of a 50 year old rather jaded gamer, and I'm going back to play it again tonight. No Man's Sky is a GOOD game. Expand

The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc.

Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable...

Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has very much redeemed it's self. with the beta tests of the update NEXT having amazing reviews and critics calling it the spiritual awakening or the Galactic Sized Come Back, the game is here to stay, gone with the bugs and here with the revolution of gaming.

The first update titled "The Foundation Update" brought a new game mode, base-building, the ability to grow plants and products, automation, etc

The second update called, "The Pathfinder update" gave us 4k graphics, 3 new land vehicles, an ARG, increased base building mechanics, more game modes and updated procedural software.

The third update was the 1st reviver getting people to come back, this was "Atlas Rises". With 30 hrs of great story, more procedural software updates, graphical updates, another game mode, (a somewhat bare bones) Multiplayer, more base building mechanics, ability to buy freighters and big ships, the ability to own 6 smaller ships at a time in your freighter, ship combat, and also flight combat and landing controls were also updated.

And finally the Big Daddy of all the updates and game saver of the century, "NEXT", while inconclusive and only going off well-known, hardcore, critic and beta tester accounts, the game seems to be saved completely from the trash can. Next has been confirmed to have, Ringed planets, more story, third-person view, multiplayer models, buy-able corvettes and frigates, COMPLETELY amazing and OVERHAULED graphics, factions, PVP, Playable races, amazing add-ons to base-building, gravitational physics, Overhauled procedural codes, Racetrack building and the ability to share them, updated resources, ability to command a fleet of ships and a restraint on universal currency so it doesn't become inflatable as easily. And i haven't even got into the stuff speculated by the new trailer.

This game is here to stay. Sean Murray never gave us promises and we struggle to grasp that. i myself gave a review of 4 before, ripping the game apart, but now the game we WANTED(and not promised) is finally here. we should all be happy it is and hope for it's continued progress to be as successful as the past updates.

Final Comparison: EVE/Elite Dangerous/Minecraft, i struggled to compare this game to anything but EVE and Elite Dangerous with more exploration and the infinite possibilities of Minecraft.

I even gave time to see what a few updates might fix... you gave a fraction of the game promised yet still charged full price... shame on you hello games

I think this would have made a great early acces title at for the price of 20 euro's. While i'm used to companies exaggerating and showing trailers that make games look better than they actually are, in the case of No Man's Sky it's a lot worse. I suggest watching the angry Joe review where he sums up everything that's been stated by Sean Murray and what is actually in the game. at first iI think this would have made a great early acces title at for the price of 20 euro's. There's some fun and cool moment to be had the first ten hours of the game, but it lacks in a lot of ways. It's very shallow, the universe is empty, the flying is bad, the combat is bad. If you're lucky to land on a beautiful interesting planet, there's some relaxing moments to enjoy the vista's and take screenshots. But that's pretty much the only positives about this game. I was hoping the game would get some nice features the coming year(s), but i think i kinda gave up on it and accepted i wasted 60 euro's. Expand

Now with the NEXT update it has, and the game is incredible, it took me entirely by surprise. If you still don't like it, it was never meant for you to begin with. It has an extremely large scope and a lot of variety. Every space game component you can think of is there and then some, trading, combat, farming, base building, fleet management, multiship freighters, customization, missions, alien diplomacy, endless worlds. Even a decent story. Just keep in mind that as a whole, the game is astonishing but it doesn't delve deeply in all of it's individual components, so don't buy it if say, only the combat is what interests you.

I'm addicted and just scratching the surface. I couldn't in good conscience have asked for more. It's not for everybody, but if you do love this kind of game, it might be the one you've always waited for.

Not enjoyable, managing your always plummeting resources is frustrating and boring. Sean Murray's comments on finding your friends in game were completely false. He absolutely lead us to believe it had multiplayer gameplay. Ironically, if they actually had multiplayer it would have helped this game tremendously.

I went into no man’s sky with low expectations... And at first no man’s sky exceeded these expectations...
Everyone starts on a random planet at the edge of the universe, you’re tasked with collecting materials to repair your ship…
This is a great tutorial to help you understand the basics of the game…
You then go to points in the galaxy you’re in for other parts to give an understanding of the game even more… and the further you go the more intriguing this game gets…
And once you finally have all of your ship parts, the universe is yours to either explore freely or travel towards the center of the universe…
To travel towards the center you need materials to craft up to power cells…
These materials are all reasonably accessible.. some more abundant than others depending on the planet you visit…
1 power cell will let you travel 100-300 light years at a time to a different planetary system..
You can also explore these planets for plant and animal species, which is really fun to do initially…
But it doesn’t take long for the no man’s sky game play loop to get tiring…
Wide as an Ocean, deep as a puddle…
I don’t care that animals have different mixtures of body parts or plants have slight variations than plants on other planets..
Every animal... every plant... they are all the same thing with different skins… that’s it... and the skin isn’t even that different most of the time..
I find procedural generation to be one of the laziest forms of game design and roll my eyes every time I hear the phrase and no man’s sky is a prime example of why…
This is 40 hours of the same thing….
All you do is repeat the first 2 hours of the game 20 times…
These worlds are not alive... animals aren’t eating, sleeping, fighting, mating… they’re just there..
walking around looking the animals on earth with parts of other animals from earth…
doing nothing but occasionally attacking you…
Don’t get me wrong, I was in a trance for a good 15 hours playing no man’s sky, and 15 hours is well worth $60, but the game was just not intriguing enough to keep me wanting to continue forward…
I shouldn’t have a planet figured out before I even set foot on it…
But here I was, I knew what to look for to get certain materials, because again these planets are all the same only differing in color or elemental danger that never really mattered...
and once you do get sucked into the game, you have to deal with these annoying sentinel creatures that shoot you for mining materials…
A very unnecessary nuisance that I believe ruins the potential Zen like experience no man sky has going for it…
you can also find ship and mining tool upgrades on these planets as well as these word stones to help you understand the alien creatures that inhabit a trading station in every star system that you can use to sell valuable materials and purchase materials needed to craft a new item or upgrade…
These stations also have other galactic travelers that you can sell items to, buy from, or purchase their ship from…
No man’s sky is a very relaxing and casual experience, simple loop, simple crafting, and may be one of those games you return to every now and then when you’re bored…
But its uninteresting beyond the first couple of hours and at the end of the day is just another lazy feeling procedurally generated survival game grind fest…
    I give no man’s sky a 7/10

Despite all this, there are much to like about MMS even in its current state. The gathering of resources and upgrading of the suit and getting new ships, a bit of a grind if approached with the wrong mind set, is a nice part of the game. And I for one really enjoys this part. The Atlas quest lines is also a fine and intriguing part of the game.

While this is nowhere near what many had envisioned, player wise - obvious when looking at the review scores, had there not been so much hype this game would have score A LOT higher - but also developer wise. It's hard to ignore the feeling that PlayStation rushed the release - as where the case with Driveclub, which also tanked at release.

Perhaps developers should be more careful when choosing Sony as publishers in the future.

The game is fun, but it's extremely light on content. The main "pillars" that had been touted so loudly prior to the game really filter into "exploration" alone as they other items, survival, combat, trading feel "empty".

The game is very repetitive, which wouldn't be a bad thing if the actions/interactions were meaningful or impactful, but I don't feel they are.
Many items that were mentioned prior to release didn't make it into the game, e.g. faction standings, trade routes, large space combat etc.

The game could be amazing if it added these items in, because they've done a great job creating a massive universe, but currently, it just feels a little light.

I gave it a 5 because it's only half way there in my opinion. Wait for further patches or for a price drop before you buy.

Dozens of hours spent trying to get out of the home system, and the bugged mission to receive the hyperdrive won't launch -- so I'm stuck with no way out. As such, my time has just been wasted.

    Seriously, you've had years to

Seriously, you've had years to fix this glitchy, substandard dumpster-fire of a game and you couldn’t even manage to fix the beginning. Piss off! I'll play a game made by someone who has even a ghost of a clue how to design one. So glad I didn't pay anywhere near full price for this compete train-wreck. Delete game........

Absolutely stunning looking game, and one of the most ambitious mainstream titles in a LONG time. Everyone I know who has watched or played it agrees broadly on this.

Floating around, discovering, playing; It really is quite beautiful and easy to absorb yourself in, and the first time you land on a lush planet is quite something. I'm enjoying taking everything at my own pace, and its

That said, as someone who has followed a development of the game for a long time, it is frustrating to see a lack of some of the features that were trailed in the build up. YET. The bug fixes are done, and I'm hoping to see some of them be added over the next few updates.

Unless you are absolutely sure I would wait a few weeks before buying this: it isn't yet finished, but what is there is amazing.

While the scope of the game is amazing, after playing the game since release it gets old quick. If you've ever read the book "Ready Player One" (if you haven't, go read it now, you'll thank me), this game feels like a beta test for the OASIS, more like a proof of concept. Don't get me wrong the scale of the game is impressive but the repetitiveness of the game makes it feel like more of a job and is the last thing I want to play after coming home from my actual job in the real world. This game is definitely a rent before buying as it feels like an over-hyped version of minecraft. Expand

Terrible. Its the first game I have ever felt angry about I was angry that i wasted my money and angry that a game I was looking forward to turned out so bad. Gonna see if i can recoop at least half what I paid for it. The free game on PSN this month rebel galaxy is a hundred times more fun than this and it was free. My advise don't waist your time or your money.

Sold this game after 1 day of playing it. This game is the biggest disappointment of 2016. This game was marketed as something different to what we got.

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
