I don't understand why people doesn't like this game. No Man's Sky don't deserve this bashing from players who don't understand this game. In NMS I trust!

Almost zen like. You can spend hours ignoring your wife and children, this is like Civ V without the excitement or strategy. 10/10 would strip mine planets again.

Repetitive, dull, boring. A shell of the game we were shown on live demos and promised. This could have gone down in history as one of the most innovative and amazing games of all time. Now it's going down in history for a more negative reason.

Do you like doing nothing but staring at planets, space systems, flora and fauna that gets mind-numbingly stale after a week? Is that worth $60? I enjoyed playing this game for roughly two days, and only kept it installed for seven. This game is the epitome of untapped potential, and pure laziness. The game is nothing more than a flying/walking simulator with procedural generation.

The crafting is boring, the animal and plant life quickly got old and found myself not caring whatsoever about them. The enemies and combat are merely afterthoughts, it’s not refined at all. The tools and weaponry are jokes, nothing looks unique, feels good to use, or has any imagination. Don’t even get me started on the base building, just no. The devs were more concerned with you looking at the sky than they were with base building. You can name stuff that *supposedly* other people can find, but won’t. After I found myself in a downward spiral in not enjoying the game I just flew to other planets and named them, not once finding other players.

This game could’ve been awesome, game of the year even. REAL base building, unique and good weapons/tools, and the ability to fight/meet other people would make this game unreal. They could’ve taken inspiration from games like ARK and Destiny to amalgamate into a good game. I don’t feel scammed or ripped off, I’m just disappointed.

    Positives:
It’s a good looking game, the space portion and environment specifically. This excludes weapons/tools, etc. as I’ve stated previously.
Naming stuff. Cool feature, however I never was able to find others named planets (etc.)

    Negatives:
    Boring crafting
    Bland weapons and tools
    Enemies and combat are afterthoughts
    Complete joke of base building
    No multiplayer activity
    Little to no customization
Generally uninteresting. Does not hold onto one’s attention

In conclusion, before you ever consider buying it, go rent it for 5 days. If the game still has grasp of your interest by the end of the 5 days, maybe the game is for you.

Regardless of all the pissed people out there, i've got a platinum trophy, so I've seen a lot of things in this game.

Quest reset - same **** again. Very annoying.

Space combat is ok, but nothing special. but the transitions from space to planet are excellent. Its really fun to land on a new planet - the exploration isn't. for platinum I had to scan every species on a few planets and its a pain in the ass. you sometimes walk for hours to find the final species. but it was fun though. 7/10.

Finally had to lower my review to a 0. The latest patches screwed up my home planet and made it unlivable, my base got randomly moved up in the air, my NPCs removed and my missions reset. I did ask for help through their support website but they probably ignored it since I never got any reply.

Travel between planets is seamless from surface to surface. The visual style is simple but gorgeous, and the thrill of touching down on a new planet for the first time and exploring the beautiful, immense diversity of it all is truly thrilling to me. I completely avoided the fiasco of No Man's Sky's promotional trail/release by simply not caring about the game. The fantastic review by hbomberguy alerted me to a niche appeal and piqued my interest, and I just bought it for a tenner in the PSN's fantastic Summer Sale. For three days I've binged it nearly non-stop, both alone and with my gf, who is enjoying the experience of exploration and discovery as much as I am.

I’ve found planets with vast lakes and squidgy terrain, ‘paradise planets’ with green skies and green rivers that run through deep canyons, desolate moon-like planets with tall mountains and a palpable sense of loneliness, mushroom planets with toxic atmospheres, and barren planets with little to see or do besides mine the abundant outcrops of valuable minerals. I’ve seen creatures enormous, tiny, cute, and horrifying. I’ve seen haunting monuments to civilizations long-dead half-buried in the middle of nowhere, and bizarre arcing bands of shining minerals streaking out of the ground. I’ve seen soaring peaks and deep ravines and scorched, featureless plains, and strange floating islands peppering twisted purple landscapes. I’ve been hunted through snowy forests by predators that make my skin crawl, and fought off pirates in asteroid belts above the looming spectres of ocean planets. I’m a couple of dozen hours in and while there is a certain definite degree of repetition in aspects of the worlds I’ve been to (because this is an indie game made by a small team of human devs and not the Holy Grail made by Jesus Christ himself), I’ve not lost the sense of wonder when first setting foot on a new planet. I have no doubt that there will be a point where I feel as if I’m just going through the motions, but I haven’t hit that point yet, and for £10 I certainly feel like I’ve got value for my money. I’m also certain that I’ll pick the game up again after I’m done with it for the first time, as there is simply so much to see, not to mention the fact that Hello Games keep adding content for free and thereby increasing the amount available for people to do.

If a game about chilled and contemplative exploration and discovery doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then nothing Hello Games did or didn't do will make you like this game. But if the idea of touching down on an alien moon, the other planets in the system looming in the sky like ghosts, an endless expanse of terrain unexplored stretching in front of you, terrain that no human may ever lay eyes on again, if this sounds exciting, then I highly recommend getting the game. Many of the complaints in the most helpful reviews here have been addressed and fixed. The PS4 version is currently the most stable, and it's only getting better from here.

Fast forward to today. The game has had a few updates, the hype is gone, expectations are extremely low. So I re-downloaded it

Now, this game is certainly not for everybody, but it is leagues better than the NMS we saw at launch. The updates have added a lot to improve the experience, so if you are in the category of players who likes the concept and aesthetics of No Man's Sky, by all means give it second chance. The photo-mode is an excellent addition and I find myself spending a lot of time setting up those pretty shots.

Here I could amble leisurely across an endless, psychedelic universe, admiring the local flora and fauna, and engaging in the occasional bout of space combat along the way.

And I enjoyed that experience. I spent many happy hours flitting serenely across Hello Games’ universe, appeasing my adventurer’s instincts. I was mesmerised by the vibrant, stylised sci-fi visuals, the ambient soundscapes, and the gentle, soothing rhythms of exploration, discovery and documentation. There wasn’t much to do, as such, but it took a long while before the thrill of endless possibilities — and the raw excitement every time the clouds parted to reveal another unknown world — began to fade.

After the new Atlas Rises update, I'm happy to see this game has improved quite a bit from when it originally released. The graphics are better, there's more missions and they have added a multiplayer component that I hope they will keep building upon. I applaud Hello Games for sticking with it and improving the game instead of abandoning it.

NMS has come a long way since its release last year. Certainly, it's deserving of the criticism that more should have been in the game on launch. Base building, the new tech system, freighters, and increased alien interaction have addressed many early complaints. While there are a LOT of criticisms that can be leveled at the marketing for this game, the end result is a unique experience that (while is not for everyone) is at least worth a rent by any lover of the art of game design.

Many reviewers have arrived at their negative score because they are viewing this as a traditional game where you "beat" it and get some kind of payoff. One with action, bosses, etc. NMS is not that kind of game, it's probably better to think of it as a flight sim or art museum than the high sci-fi of Elite Dangerous.

There is lore, and a story, but really it just adds to the atmosphere. The universe is vast, the planets are stunning (more diversity on that front has been added as well). the game has a lively community and upcoming updates promise to add more to the Euclid.

Yes, there is now more content, but the game does not feel improved and the core experience remains the same as it was. Too little, too late & it was not enough to motivate me to play more after the extended break. If anything, it now reminds me of an early access game that never gets finished. This sort of mess belongs on Steam Early Access. I hope this is not a sign of things to come for the PS4. This sort of practice does not belong in the AAA title section at full price at launch. A game that continues to add and build upon a very shallow and expansive foundation, and with every update gets closer to becoming a game every space lover and explorer should own. Never have I felt a game with bigger potential and one that tries so desperately to stray from an on-rails experience in every respect. The universe is there, waiting for you to explore....but without your own motivations and need to do so, you will feel like No Man's Sky is a peculiar game with only as much substance as you give it. Just like real life, if you have no intention or desire to see the sunrise from the top of a mountain then you can not possible understand what motivates someone to make an early morning hike in pursuit of said view. This game is about the experiences and the journey of being a lonely space explorer discovering new worlds and trying to find their place in an endless universe which may very well be one giant simulation. What then is the motivation to take a step forward, to fly to the next system and plant the next flag on a barren unforgiving landscape, to brave hostile worlds for valuable resources which only add your journey forward...........

Only the true explorer among us will know.

I understand people nagging about the boredom of No Man's Sky. What they don't understand is that they simply don't like survival-exploration games. I love them. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has been a great exploration game since its release, I don't care about the multiplayer missing and I don't think that actually important for the game since the universe is so big that meeting other players could be complicated (just try to travel to the Galactic Hub with a Class C ship from the northern section of the Alpha Vector). The updates made the game much better, with more things to do but still it is just a chill exploration game. I still get goosebumps everytime I land on a new planet. I'm still a very long way to te center of the Euclid Galaxy and I know what I'll find later in the game, I've done the Atlas Path and yes, it's not the best storyline ever, it's just a secondary quest to obtain the ability to locate black holes. Anyway, the game is just what they said it would be, I only miss the rotation of the planets, that was a personal bummer, and perhaps some more animals, but that's just because I have not found dinosaurs but other people have. Update 1.1 and 1.2 were great and 1.3 might bring multiplayer, so that should be it for that issue. You can get it cheap now (maybe that was a real problem when it came out, it was too expensive, maybe) and with the updates I think it is worth it. :) Expand

So I feel like we need more fresh reviews here, the ones from august 2016 don't really hold up anymore and only show the negatives. I think it's important to mention though, this is not a game for everyone. it requires patience and a want to spend time on exploring. While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.
