Just because you didn't like or, half of you who didn't even play it or going to complain about an otherwise okay game, doesn't mean you shell out an automatic zero. Let's get down to it. Mass Effect Andromeda strives to go back to how the first game was, while keeping elements from the 3rd game. Exploration is functional and still more enjoyable than ME1's. The character animations are hit or miss, as well as the writing. But if any of you are remembering ME1-3's animations and writing to be amazing works or art, you need to go play them again. The new class system is a step up in freedom for the player, and the dialogue options are more varied and less cut and dry. Occasionally cheesy dialogue just adds to the fact that this is a mass effect game. It's always been somewhat cheesy. Anybody remember Shepard's best insult for a Hanar? Yeah. Multiplayer is a complete upgrade from the 3rd game outside of character selection which is organized from rarity rather than class. All in all the game isn't perfect, it has it's share of missteps. But it doesn't deserve a zero. It's not a bad game. You people are simply refusing to enjoy it for what it is. You're going into it with a bad attitude and in some cases don't go into it at all. IF Mass Effect dies as a franchise, It wont be because of EA, it'll be because of you people who slam the game and refuse to support them for minor issues. Expand

Exploring feels worthwhile, locales are diverse enough, combat gets better when you get used to it and crafting through research paces the character improvements nicely. Yes there are glitches and bugs - some game breaking (meaning you need to load an older save to try to progress) and some just annoying as hell. They are probably working on the bugs already so there is a good chance that some of them are addressed already by the time you read this.

Ah cmon! It's a very good game. It's huge, lots of content, fun stuff to do. The idea behind the story is great, but the script is meh. It's not as scientifical (or well written) like others ME, but it's a great game nevertheless. There's a lot of bugs, a LOT. But nothing that really bothered me. Buy it on sale and give it a run. It will grow on you. (I did not play the Multiplayer game)

After +110 hours playing I can say that this is a very entertaining game, different from the original trilogy, and it's okay because it's meant to be that way. Great combat system and skills, extremely entertaining, with a very good story and characters. You just have to understand that this crew isn't 'your ME righteous full of heroes crew... You are not a SPECTRE, you are the PATHFINDER. The Tempest it's full of people who felt they didn't fit in the Milky Way, and in a way they become this very tight crazy family. They are more relaxed, their motivations are quite different from those of the original ME.

There's a bit of Fanservice for the old fans of the franchise and a lot of improvements in the craft / skills / combat areas. There's a lot of side missions and most are important to unlock more missions, loyalty from people and all. It's a very massive game, exploring every inch of the planets will take you a lot of hours per planet. My only complain would be that some missions end up being repetitive, so as some mini bosses (as Architects or Ascendants)

I only had 3 bugs in the gameplay. Animations have improved after the patch, playing a couple of hours won't give you the feel on the game, I honestly played the first 10 just exploring, no priority missions, people have been extremely absurd about rating this game below 7. It's a good and fun game. Not a masterpiece, but also not trash.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game. Andromeda reminds me a lot of the original Mass Effect. It is a solid game with great ideas and promise, but it comes up a little short on some fronts. The primary difference is that Mass Effect (1) introduced us to this whole new universe, and Andromeda is just a new galaxy within that universe.

Yes, facial animations aren't great but they don't ruin the game. Game-play is incredibly fun and the new jump boost takes it to a whole new level. My biotic can now get up close and personal and quickly boost away to get back to cover before getting destroyed. Multiplayer is still great (some issues linking to single player on occasion, but not too bad). The story is decent so far, but nothing groundbreaking. However, the focus that YOU are the alien is a feeling I enjoy very much. Planetary exploring is also very fun and satisfying. Some missions can be monotonous, but there are enough options that you can change things up pretty easily.

Overall, I give this game an 8. However, the level of enjoyment I receive while playing feels like a 10. Give this game an honest chance, and try not to dwell on the bad things you may have read. Having tunnel vision on one or two flaws can make you blind to the beauty around it.

It took time for me to get into the swing of this game and ultimately classify it as a welcome and natural continuation of the Mass Effect series for a few reasons. The first reason: the character models are flat out ugly. They quite frankly feel unfinished. It feels like they used Dragon Age: Inquisition’s smooth and colorful models and tried to make them more realistic by adding extra texture and detail to the faces. Paired with the unnatural facial animations, and you are left with this strange midpoint between cartoony and realistic that is strange. When your character first jolts on screen, it is a bit shocking. You are then immediately greeted by more characters, and they look no better. I’ll have to look back, but I remember the models in even Mass Effects 3 looking better.

Adding to the rough start is the fact that it gets off to a very in my opinion rushed start. While I normally would praise a game for jumping right into the action and feel that more games should do it, Mass Effect is a series that values you taking your time. To boot, this game features a whole new story in a whole new galaxy with a whole new cast of characters. I would have preferred it if the game let you wake up, walk around a bit and learn who everyone was and heck, who YOU are. Instead, you wake up, you are engaged with dialogue, and suddenly, you are put to work. It’s one of the few times I was aching for MORE exposition. Between the rushed intro and the ugly characters, I wouldn’t blame most people from being turned off from the get go. It isn’t until you are off the opening location (an ark named Hyperion, one of several arks designed to aid the Andromeda Initiative) that you can breathe and experience what this game really offers the Mass Effect universe. And that “something” is great.

    Freedom.

I’ve often lamented the Mass Effect series for going in the wrong direction compared to where I thought it should go. I was disappointed that the games seemed to favor increased linearity over increased exploration, as I feel that a game that involves exploring space and building alliances lends itself to a more open world form of gameplay. Instead, Mass Effect 2 featured smaller explorable hubs, including the comparatively tiny Citadel. And then Mass Effect 3 increased the size of the Citadel while offering less compelling additional areas. Since then, open world games have become an increasingly sexy genre in the gaming world, and while this leads to a lot of games that are tiring because they are poorly done open worlds with nothing more than repetitive busy work to fill the map or worse, gigantic maps with nothing to do in them (No Man’s Sky), I always thought Mass Effect was a perfect candidate for a more open experience.

So when you arrive on your first mission you get a slice of the more open experience that will only become more open as the chains come off and you are left to your own devices.

Here is also when you will experience your first combat situations, and man. The combat is great. The combat seems to be a controversial subject to some people as the skill choices have become more streamlined and any limitations on weapon choice or play style based on class have been removed. The dirty word “casualization” will be thrown around plenty here, but more streamlined and enjoyable to play while still offering variety is not a bad thing. To boot skill selection is still up to the player and those choices will have a very material effect on how the game is played, making it no less of an RPG than previous iterations. Do you want to go all biotic to manipulate foes and hit them with devastating combinations? Do you want to go all tech? Do you want to go all pure combat? Do you want a combination? It’s up to you.

Further improving the combat is the movement, which was always an annoyance in the Mass Effect series. Before, Mass Effect was largely a pure cover shooter with an often-tricky camera and stoic movement. But now movement is a lot more flowing, making it much more fast-paced and fun. Cover now happens automatically when you move toward a wall with a weapon drawn and getting out of cover is as easy as just moving, making you feel much less stuck to walls. Dashing and the jetpack are great and make for a more quick and verticle experience.Maybe from the outside these changes seem radical, but when you play the game, the changes are nothing but a natural and welcome evolution to the Mass Effect formula.

After this tutorial mission the game begins to take shape. You now have an idea of who you are, what your mission is and your role in the game to come. You will soon be on your first proper planet complete with several side quests, ready to experience the truly great experience before you. If you try to get past the rocky start, you won’t regret it.

Also it runs really well on PC.

    8/10, very good

After 40 hours of playing I only experienced two or three small missions which left me a bit bored, the rest of it was really good. It's a strong start for a new Mass Effect chapter. The only thing Bioware itself and also a lot of the fans need to realise is that the characters in Andromeda need time to develop over a few games just like a Garrus or a Tali had to.

The only thing I was missing was "more" aliens. I think Bioware should have introduced at least two or three more alien races in addition to those already present, especially because they cut out several of the old ones (which is fine to me, but of course I would love to see them return at a later point.)

The improved combat system is great. It feels much more dynamic and speedy and delivers direct control.

Every Mass Effect and sci-fi-rpg fan should give this game a chance. It definitely deservers it and while it may not live up to all of it expectations, it delivers on most of them.

And another note: Just imagine if players back in 2007 would have weighed in the technical issues of the first Mass Effect game (which were never solved) it also wouldn't have come out with a score as high as it did.

I'm grateful for Andromeda, because it is a good start for a new Mass Effect chapter without Shepard while still giving me a lot of easter eggs to think back fondly on the "old journey".

This game is by no means perfect, but it certainly doesn't deserve the number of negative reviews it is receiving. Sure, the human facial animations are a bit weird and awkward at times, and I've noticed a few technical issues here and there; but honestly, it's not that much different than my experience with Dragon Age: Inquisition or Fallout 4, and it doesn't break the game experience for me.

I don't expect top-notch graphic/technical quality from Bioware - they produce great stories and great characters and have always had some short-comings elsewhere. To expect differently is to be deluded. Most companies do not have the time or freedom to produce a game to whatever insane standards people create for them. And I'm looking at you Witcher 3 and the arm-less dwarf and book-in-head woman and crashing to grey geometry world before a horse race. You can still call a game good or even great even with it's flaws. Andromeda is one of these games that people just need to give a break to.

So far, I've found the characters interesting. The voice acting can be iffy at times, but most of it is pretty decent. The environments are beautiful. I was near immediately engaged in the story and the mystery of this new system. I've enjoyed doing the side quests around the Nexus. I've enjoyed exploring Eos. I know there is so much potential in this game, and I can't wait to discover it all. I never expected some grand new twist on "let's go planet to planet and fight aliens" - that is exactly what Mass Effect is. Why does it need to be some ground breaking amazing story? I haven't seen a ground breaking amazing story that was super original anywhere in entertainment recently, but there HAVE been lots of many good or great stories, and so far Andromeda is shaping up to be one of them.

The menus can be a bit daunting at first, but once you figure out where everything is, it's smooth sailing from there. My only major complaint is the travel time between systems and planets on the galaxy map. It looks gorgeous, but it's slow, annoying, and wastes time. I still explored and read about every planet I could though. Some people also find the scanning tedious, but I don't mind throwing up my scanner for everything.

At the end of the day, it's truly not as game-breakingly bad as everyone makes it out to be. Give the game a chance and judge for yourself. Bioware never promised things that weren't given. Andromeda is, 100%, exactly what I was expecting, and in fact, it's surprised me in many ways.

Some of the prominent criticisms are not without merit - I have come across a fair few bugs and the facial animations are disappointing. The jury is out on the story and characters, although I loved colonising my first planet. Some of the systems are too complex and burdensome, rather than flowing from the rest of the game.

The quest design is not W3 standards but it is a noticeable improvement over DA:I. Having completed the first open-world planet I did not feel any of the boredom and frustration I did in that game. Any of the random encounters are worth engaging in since the combat is so fun and varied - I think the combat is so open that it produces novel and emergent battle scenarios. I enjoy the feeling of progression - from the building of colonies to the improvements in the Nexus hub-station. I think the multi-player is just fine, it is too similar from ME3 to truly stand-out, but it is nice to boot it up from inside the single-player and a good change of pace from the campaign.

However I can honestly say that my overall experience from playing the game has been joy. I think the game has its flaws and I can see it is not for everyone, but personally I am completely enthralled by the galaxy Bioware have built and feel very happy that I have another 50-100 hours left to spend in it.

Mass Effect: Andromeda is a fairly standard Mass Effect game. Its writing and voice acting are both inconsistent. At times quite good, at times quite bad. This is nothing new to series. True, they're a bit worse this time around, but considering that it's nothing new for the series the rage that has surrounded them and the game is hardly justified.

It seems that Andromeda has become a target for the type of people who took part in "gamergate", with many decrying the game as garbage that was ruined by "SJWs". They have, of course, made most of the target of their ire a woman and a non-white man who worked on the game - claiming that they are terrible at their job and were only hired because of SJWs infiltrating the video game industry (who apparently wish to hire people that aren't white men who are bad at their job just to fill diversity quotas? or some such equally crazy claim).

It's of course ridiculous to blame any failings of such a large project on only a couple of people. Logic doesn't really matter when you're just looking for someone to attack as a part of your crusade against the evil SJWs however.

Anyway, I wrote this mainly to throw a reasonable score into the mix of what appears to be a bunch of reactionaries giving the game 0's and 1's because they decided this game was their next target. The game itself is good, but not amazing. It's typical Mass Effect fare. It has a lot of issues but at the end of the day, but it remains enjoyable to its interesting setting and some fun gameplay mechanics. I hope a fun series like this isn't killed because a bunch of lunatics decided to attack it.

This game is a great new entry into the Mass Effect series. The game does have some minor bugs and some awkward facial mechanics, but looking past those eventual fixes shows a game full of bravery, heart, and relationships. I believe that it has succeeded in many ways, while falling short in minor technical issues and some lack luster dialogue at times. Overall, for any fan of the original trilogy: get this game if you want another true mass effect experience. Expand

An interesting new story with a great background. On my opinion I'm not that disappointed! Sure few point made me calm my excitement about the game! But the story is interesting! All the character are deep and interesting! The world to explore is incredible!

This game is beautiful. Wonderful characters, beautiful locations, interesting story. And I like the appearance of Sarah. Yes. The problem is animation. If patch fix this, game will be rly cool and handsome. And game need more content for gay, more content for LI, like it was in DAI.
I love this game series and I want to continue.

The game is ok. Of course it is not as epic and well-written as the first trilogy, but this is something that we already knew. I've never played a Mass Effect game before, but I have played Dragon Age:Inquisition, which I loved! This game has a similar feel to Dragon Age. The story isn't quite as epic feeling but still enjoyable. I really loved the combat in this game as well as the exploration. I wished there were more options for character customization. It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
