I'm giving this a score of 10 rather than 8.5-9 points that i think it really is to offset some of the trolls still apparently butthurt over ME3 ending. If you let Garrus win the shooting contest on the Citadel, you'll like this too. Enjoy the ride, yo!

Great graphics (minus some sluggish animations), awesome story, more engaging combat than previous ME (I played all of them several times). I am a big fan of ME, so expectations were fairly high. If the game has content but u don't like some of it, or even most of it, its not a zero. People just rage because its not what they expected. Personally I would give it an 9, animations aren't great, but are tolerable. You cannot judge the game just for graphics, especially an RPG game like ME. I mean, Minecarft should get zeroes for graphics too then, right?

So i am giving it a 10 just to offset those like zero-kiddies who foam so much about how the animations are bad.

However, once the first couple of hours are completed, the game opens up into a true open world(s) game that is utterly incredible. The story lines are compelling, the characters are very likable and relatable, and the dialogue is very realistic. Conversations don't fit the typical rigid and over exaggerated format common to many games, which may not work for gamers who are more accustomed to interacting with video game NPCs than having conversations with people in the real world. After 60 hours of gameplay, Mass Effect: Andromeda has impressed me more than I had ever expected and has become one of my favorite titles. I enjoyed this game even more than the original series. The story isn't quite as interesting as the reaper concept, but the rich open world exploration teeming with fun missions to do combined with the amazing lore the Mass Effect series has built up made this one of the funnest games I have ever played. Neither me nor my wife has experienced any glitches or strange/ugly facial animations with our Ryders. It took me a couple tries to design one that I liked, but once I did I had no issues throughout my play through. It seems that a lot of the people giving Mass Effect: Andromeda negative feedback are going into the game expecting to find something bad, only instead of reviewing it objectively, they critically search for flaws to reaffirm their expectations. This type of behavior, along with people rating it who have never even played it has left a game easily worthy of a 10/10 with a user score of 4.6. Expand

The characters are likeable and there is a lot of effort put in their development and interactions with them - the loyalty missions are extremely fun. The story is engaging and while at the beginning it lacks the "weight of the world" feeling of the trilogy, the pressure rises with time and oh does it get personal.
I loved the combat system since I've greatly enjoyed using melee weapons and vanguard strategy combined with tech. I did not encounter many awkward animations though I have seen some minor bugs with npc's stuck in weird spaces - nothing game-breaking.
The music is a bit underwhelming, especially at the last fight of the game but I found myself addicted to a few dj compositions you can find in your Pathfinders quarters or bars/clubs on certain planets.
Overall, I would give this game a solid 8,5/10 but since everyone is trashing it waay more than it deserves things hot personal and I raised the note. Fight me!

    So, Mass Effect Andromeda...

After the Mass Effect 3 debacle, I swore I would never play another Mass Effect game. I mean after putting 200-300 hours in on that series, the last 5% was crappy enough to ruin my stellar enjoyment of the preceding 95% in the series. It was that bad.

So when Mass Effect Andromeda was announced awhile back, and when it was stated that it would take place in the future, and not include (or resolve) anything left over from Mass Effect 1-3, I felt no real urge to fork over my money to Bioware. I was steadfast in my desire to avoid the game and the certain failure that it would become.

Then about three months ago, the pendulum swung a bit. I started catching some of the gameplay footage. It reminded me of what I really loved about Mass Effect. I started hearing a bit more about the story. Rather than abandoning the past, they found a way of taking contemporary characters, races and ideas from the series and putting them in a fresh start. I started to get a little excited and thought what the hell, I will give it a shot and see.

Then the initial reviews came out. They hit pretty hard and I felt like my original suspicions were being validated. Despite having pre-ordered the game, I thought it was likely going to sit on the shelf. And it would have for me if a friend hadn't decided to press on and see what it was like.

He found that the initial reviews were accurate about one thing: The first two planets (Habitat 7 and Eos) and tutorial missions are a bit of a mess. There is so much to do, you feel like you are wandering around a bit aimlessly. The UI has some issues (especially from a crafting and quest management standpoint). Indeed you really do have to muscle past that portion of the game.

But I found when I did was there was an incredibly fun game underneath. Once I got the hang of how to deal with the UI issues, and focus on the game play and the storyline, I found a ton of depth. There were tons of ties back to Mass Effect 1-3 and the story I loved (the 95% part) but I found myself really growing to like Ryder even more than Shepard as the game progressed. You definitely get to play him as a Captain Kirk/Mal Reynolds hybrid that makes all the crew interactions awesome.

And by the time you get to the end, you really get to see the alliance you build hit its stride. This is something that really killed the Mass Effect 3 ending for me, and contributed heavily to my disdain for the finale. To be honest, when I finished it up last night and put the controller down, I felt I had just played the best Mass Effect game to date. And that surprised the hell out of me. It was easily the best 100 hours I have put into a game in recent memory.

I'm not sure where the franchise will go from here. The ending serves well as a stand alone game, but also leaves plenty of room to develop should they wish to continue. I for one hope to see these folks again some day. So for that reason, I just wanted to reach out to my friends who played Mass Effect in the past. I can't say you will come away feeling the same love I felt for this game. But I do think if you give it an honest chance, and play through the initial issues (which by the way, Bioware is working to address through patches) I think you will find the time well spent!

Combat and game mechanics are intuitive and probably the best of any Mass effect game. The story is simplistic but the whole point of the game is to explore Andromeda and reset from the complete dead end the writers were left with after ME3. If you want to understand the depth of the story by learning motives and details about new species then you will have to spend a lot of time exploring, reading data pads and completing side quests. This game is by no means perfect and without so many overly critical reviews from people who want everything in the story spelt out for them, I would have been more critical. This game is clearly meant to be the opening act of a trilogy (just like ME1) and therefore is less fast paced and spends a lot of time establishing the narrative needed for later games. I would highly recommend this title, BioWare clearly dropped the ball rushing this out but having paid full price I am very content with the value for money having played more than 80 hours on my first play through. I have played all 3 previous mass effect games, and have over 60 hours in MEA. Not to mention decades of gaming under my belt across every platform out there. I'm picky about what I spend my very few valuable hours on. I will very often stop playing a game if I get bored.

MEA is flawed as so many have pointed out and has a lot of small bugs that are certainly a bit disappointing. But to say they have an extreme negative impact on the overall game experience would be incorrect.

I have actually enjoyed my time in Andromeda very much and continue to go back for more. The combat and movement mechanics are a significant upgrade over the previous games and the planets are gorgeous and diverse.

The story is actually pretty engaging and is getting better. There are plenty of fetch quests, with some much more fun than others, but I enjoy the variety and the rewards are decent. I also think the quest management system and map are very well executed, so you never feel lost or unsure where to go next.

I will summarize that MEA is a very good sci-fi action-RPG in it's own right. If you are looking for the continued adventures of Shepard and Co in the Milky Way, you will not find it here. If you are looking at a fresh new adventure in the Mass Effect universe, I definitely recommend it.

Edit: I have finally completed the game and can say with full authority that this game is very very good. The story is solid in its own right and the combat mechanics are light years (pun not intended) ahead of the previous games.

But when I forced myself to ignore this things everything changed. I realaized that Andromeda plot is really good idea, and actually it is super beautiful, actually Andromeda is what I expected from No Man's Sky - amazing bright space exploration. Planets are really lovely, graphics and art direction is top (except face animation), characters are not comparable to ME1-2, but there're some fun to, especially Drack is very interesting - from his main story to his comments through the game. And during completing the main quest I realized that the plot is pretty OK, many questins, but the one who wrote it definitely knows the game and loves what his doing. This game is more like an introduction to the new galaxy, not super rich story. And again - it is super beautiful space exploration. Also in the end of the game I really loved the combat system, it's really god after you try to understand it. Actually EA release tehre new title Anthem especially on the Andromeda combat system.
PS. Of course it's not comparable to the ME1-2, but they really did a great job, stop trying compare this games, just replay entire trilogy if you want "old good ME" :)

It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.

While it’s underwhelming in places, there’s a lot to like as you venture into the weirder parts of Andromeda. Frequent technical issues hamper the experience a bit, as does an uninspiring main story. [June 2017, p66]

A welcome, if slightly patch return for Mass Effect. The script has problems, but combat is bloody brilliant. [May 2017, p.62]
