    Bethesda promised cosmetic only microtransactions
    Pete Hines is a liar

It breaks my heart but this is a buggy dumpster fire of a game with no charm
This is a cash grab trying to squeeze every cent from the consumer with a low effort put in. A thoroughly unenjoyable game

    Shame on you Bethesda

Also the decision to NOT put ANY human NPC-Charakters (for storytelling) in this game was IMHO the badest decision they could made. Would the moron's at Bethesda really think that we like to READ the entire story from countless terminal screens and some fcking paper-notes which laying arround everywhere? **** NO! - I would rather buy a book if i like to read.

Meanwhile i've started to play "Stalker - Shadow of Chernobyl" again which is - even it's from 2007 - a thousand times better than this ****.

If i could get Bethesda an advice i would take all the remaining copys of Fallout 76, throw them on a pile, dig a big hole somwhere in the desert and bury them there like Atari does with E.T. back in 1983 - But please... burn down the pile before you bury it.

Fallout 76 departs from the series' single-player RPG roots in favor of online multiplayer. An idea I was initially onboard with as one thing that repeatedly entered my mind when playing Fallout 4 was how much fun it would have been to scour the wasteland with some friends by my side. Unfortunately a rough launch plagued by technical issues, server disconnections, exploits, controversy, and questionable design decisions (many of which are still around to this day) did a lot to sour my enjoyment of the game. Although, not enough to keep me from putting 191 hours into it.

By far the most frustrating aspect of 76's gameplay is its far too restrictive crafting, gathering, and inventory management loop. Killing monsters, exploring the beautiful world of Appalachia, and completing quests can be a blast for a lot of the same reasons as the main entries. Not even a change to V.A.T.S (which now acts as a real-time lock-on system) can take away from the fact that the core action of the Bethesda Fallout series is a lot of fun. However, this enjoyment is hindered by having to almost constantly manage how much you're carrying both on your person and in your base's stash to ensure that you aren't over-encumbered while maintaining enough scrap parts to constantly repair your rapidly degrading gear. Even with several updates to help alleviate some of this frustration I still find myself having to make sacrifices that I'd rather not have to just to ensure that I can actually keep playing comfortably.

Right now the game's biggest deficiency is a lack of end-game content. After completing the game's solid, but uninterestingly told main quest your only real option is to launch nukes, fight the Scorchbeast Queen, and farm legendaries for better loot. Essentially the game becomes even more of a repetitive grind just with no real goal in sight anymore other than collecting more stuff. To make matters worse these are also rather tedious tasks. The amount of hoops you have to jump through to even launch a nuke make doing so a nightmare and the Queen battle itself just exemplifies how awful it is to fight flying enemies in this game. They're unappealing options that I found did little to incentivize me to return after hitting level 100 and collecting every trophy. Although, plenty of other people have not had that problem. I've seen a lot of players level 200 and up.

So if 76 has all these issues (and more), then why have I and so many others kept returning for hours on end? For me it's the world. Appalachia is by far the best map in any Fallout game to date and one of the best in any open-world game currently on the market. It's comprised of several distinctive regions allowing for a great deal of diversity in the kind of locales you'll visit. Bethesda has filled every inch with secrets and stories to uncover. The lack of NPCs is questionable for a variety of reasons, but it allows the environmental storytelling to shine like never before. Plus it really sells the feelings of isolation and danger in trying to carve out a place for yourself in a world where life has moved on. Something that, for me, makes all the quests and activities a little more interesting.

Fallout 76 is definitely a flawed game. There are still a lot of glitches and cheaters remaining, Bethesda's behind-the-scenes work is often shaky at best, and in an effort to please both longtime Fallout fans as well as the online survival gamers this is clearly trying to appeal to a lot of conflicting systems are in place that make things like PVP seem absolutely pointless. Yet in spite of this there is a certain charm to this. The main draw of player choice may have been removed, but several of the other appealing aspects of Fallouts 3 and 4 are still in place allowing for at least a modicum of entertainment if you're willing to be a little forgiving. No one can blame you if you aren't though. Even a lot of the diehard 76 fans will admit this game needs more work. However, even in the face of all its sins I still found myself playing it long enough to get that platinum trophy, and look forward to seeing what it grows into in the years to come.

If you are the least sensitive to clumsy and greedy business-practices this is not the game for you.

The metacritic-reviews that defend this game or give it 10/10 suffer from one of the things that have bothered me the most when playing Fallout 3 - 76 as well as Skyrim. Why not settle with something realistic such as you either be the leader of the Dark Brotherhood or head of the Companions or Arch-mage. Or why not just Joe Schmoe in a big world of wonder?

Yeah, I know; it sounds stupid but in an fantasy-world it's unrealistic that you are the chosen one as well as the leader of any organization you happen to stumble across. And it's totally unrealistic that anyone who has played any AAA-title in the last five years actually thinks this booooring mess is actually really good unless you are paid to say otherwise.

Sadly it has (at least for now) made me grow totally tired of all them. I've uninstalled both Skyrim and Fallout 4 from my ps4 and doubt I'll ever play anything from Bethesda again... :(

I really rated Fallout 3, Fallout 4 was good, Fallout 76 started off terribly and seemed sort of pre-release standard (Bethesda seem to do this all the time). Fallout 76 has had several updates and DLC added which have transformed the game for me, yes there are still a few bugs but now there are separate servers for PVE and PVP and another for the new Battle Royal aspect. As I am not unemployed or a student I find the missions and content enough to keep me busy within the game as a single PVE oriented player. I have enjoyed base building, farming, trading (via vending machines), getting and upgrading power armour, tackling the ghouls, scorched, mutants and many other creatures in the game. Some of my best experiences have been casually interacting with other players. I am not in a group or a clan and normally play alone, however the Fallout 76 community is very good; there are some idiots, spoiled little kids and dicks as in any on-line game but in general mostly everyone I have met has been friendly. My first interaction was whilst building a base as a level 10, a level 100 guy came to see what I was up to and gave me some tips and a really good weapon. Later another guy saw me selling junk at Morgan Town Station at level 20 and said if I helped him collect some items he would help me out as he liked helping new players. He showed me new areas on the map, made and gave me under armour, power armour and upgraded weapons and ammunition, that experience changed my play. I am now level 100+ with upgraded T51-b and X-01 power armour and can tackle a scorch-beast (though it's still better with a second player) , on a casual basis I give food, water, weapons and hopefully some help to newer players I meet as the community did this for me. Those previous experiences changed the game for me. There are voice comm's in game so you can interact and If there's an annoying kid, gang of dicks or total ass on the sever, server hop, there's plenty other servers but in my experience those sorts are few and far between. The Fallout community was, and is more than just the actual game. I for one am enjoying Fallout 76, the updates and DLC just add more for my enjoyment but I guess at the end of the day it boils down to what type of game/experience you were looking for. In my opinion if you want instant gratification and pay-to-win this is not the game for you. If you want to PVE with casual player interaction at your choosing then this is the game for you, with the added bonus of PVP and Battle Royal servers if you fancy a go at that. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 76 is a collection of contradictions.

On the one hand, even at the time of writing, it has some big bugs, on the other hand they pale in comparison to the fun of launching nukes and the multitude of events.
The story is an incredibly deep, tragic, complicated, meditation on technology and its relationship with humankind, yet it is ultimately a jigsaw puzzle composed by ghosts. It is an incredibly solemn, at times lonely, experience, but conversely it has the best community of people you could possibly play with.
All of this is to say that Fallout 76 doesn't work on the terms of a typical single player RPG, where choice results from the differing desires of NPCs. BGS has made them before, and there are numerous others on the market. It works because in between the quests and events, there is a collection of incredibly fun gameplay experiences. Fighting the Scorchbeast Queen with a server of strangers, uncovering the history of Appalachia leading up to Reclamation Day (Myst as written by Cormack McCarthy), helping new players build their CAMP, and of course launching nukes. The voice actors are phenomenal, perfectly setting the mood of the game. And the frequent updates have made the game better, with backpacks, events, and bug fixes. The new Nuclear Winter mode is another addictive addition, with high replayability. Highly recommended. Because of, not in spite of, the contradictions.

So utterly disappointing and flawed in every possible way… The first few hours, most of it can be ignored, and occasionally the flaws can be forgotten, but only briefly before they come storming back to the forefront. An awful, boring, empty, pointless experience. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. It's worth mentioning that there has already been a Bethesda title that was equally as unimpressive: The Elder Scrolls Online - but looking at it now, it has transformed into one of the best MMOs out there. There's always the hope the Fallout 76 develops the same way and becomes something special, but for now, that seems impossible. It's a world away from that.

Fallout 76 isn't your typical fallout experience. You don't have NPCs or dialogue, but instead get real players that should fill this void - that ultimately fails to do so. It does some things right, but as of now I cannot recommend getting this game as long as it stays a broken and boring mess that it is right now.

Fallout 76 is the series’ Freshman introduction into the world of online, multiplayer games. As a result, we are experiencing all of the awkwardness and clumsiness associated with that season of life. It is imperfect and a bit uncomfortable, but I see opportunity for Fallout 76 to be more than it presently it - to be a truly great, rich Fallout experience.
