While it sounds interesting on paper, in practice Fallout 76 as a shared universe with PvP combat just doesn't work. I loved Fallout 3 and 4 as well as New Vegas. I could go on for ages about all the bad experiences I had "breaking it early" but I'll keep this short...

It's fallout at it's core. I really enjoy the combo of the surreal landscape and being able to help new fallout players. No issues on my end after 24 combined hours of gameplay. Beta and launch both have ran smooth. Looking forward to exploring and watching West Virginia grow!

What a disaster. Why Bethesda thought a multiplayer Fallout game would work is beyond me. For starters, the game is painfully boring. All "quests" are given by a robot or a holotape. Real solid game to explore and fight in, especially better if your playing with friends, some issues with frames in certain areas that I hope will be fixed soon. I think the game is overhated because it's not a singleplayer Fallout game but for what it is it is a fun time.

Every single location my buds and I have visited so far has had an interesting story to tell. Emotional holo-tapes (some several minutes long), notes, hand-written journals, terminal logs, and sentient robots all shed light on what life was like for past, pre-war inhabitants. Many times, their grim stories will even kick off a variety of small quests. It's a far cry from other survival games like Rust, Conan Exiles, DayZ, and Ark Survival that don't even HAVE quests, let alone much backstory. From what I've seen of the survival genre, the sole fact that FO76 is NOT Early Access already has me hooked.

Overall, aside from a few graphical bugs I've encountered, I've had a ton of fun surviving, exploring, fighting different enemies, building my own mini-base, and uncovering crazy secrets on the map. Even though it's not your traditional single-player Fallout RPG, the amount of content and systems at play in FO76 is staggering for an online survival MMO and can keep you and your friends occupied for weeks. If you're into PvE and Roleplay the West Virginia hills are vast and filled with NPC monsters for hunting and looting. If you're into PvP, there are always good bounties waiting on Hunter/Hunted Station radio.

Some sage advice from an old arcade player, if you're ever not sure whether a modern game is worth it's full price, rate it at $1 an hour. If you can get 60 hours of game-play from a $60 retail game, it's well worth it in my old-school, coin-operated book.

It's about time we hold Bethesda accountable. They've taken a really, really bad turn in their development. It scares me and at this point, I think they'd be better off selling their assets off and cashing out.

New Vegas is the best Fallout and Bethesda didn't even develop that game. Fallout 4 is a joke with a dialogue system that makes Mass Effect Andromeda more interesting to play.

New Vegas is the best Fallout and Bethesda didn't even develop that game. Fallout 4 is a joke with a dialogue system that makes Mass Effect Andromeda more interesting to play. That being said let's get into Fallout 76.

Oh boy, Fallout 76... 80% fallout 4 in every aspect only further dumbed down, fewer interesting weapons and even less story. I am beyond words for the lackluster development of this game. Unlike most people complaining about the game, My qualms have nothing to do with Online only, nothing to do with it not being New Vegas pt2. My qualms with this game are unbias factual critiques,

No story whatsoever. Yes there are radio signals, holotapes and other trash story bits dropped across the wasteland but nothing deliverable. Nothing worth merit or conviction. The kinds of story pieces only NPC's WITH dialogue and choices can give you. There is nothing here, no purpose to do anything in this game.

Loot - Building. In Survival games loot and building make sense. It works in those games because let's say you need wood, you go get wood. You need whatever material you go get that material with the tool you crafted. Here in Fallout you literally just randomly walk all over the wastland picking up JUNK and you have no idea how much of it you need, what exactly you need or where to get it ETC ETC

Graphics/Performance - OMG This game looks like it came out of 2011 and honestly that's just not acceptable. AT ALL. Let's take Oblivion for example. That game literally pioneered how good graphics could be for the time period. Now look at Fallout, Looks like absolute trash. From a Triple AAA studio who ha smillions upon millions to invest in development, that's just sad and unacceptable.

Vats/Gunplay/PVP/Gameplay. Oh Geez, where to start. Firstly VATS could have worked fine in real time if it wasn;t buggy and if it had a better auto targeting system. It also absolutely should not cost AP to initiate VATS. Using AP just to start VATS is utterly ridiculous, After it starts only shooting your weapon should use up AP. Gunplay is atrocious, I'd honestly take Call of Duty II Gunplay over this and that game is over 10 years old. It boiggles my mind that ID just didn't develop the gunplay. With all of the buginess in VATS, Gunplay and abysmal hit detection PVP is impossible to take seriously. Additionally trying to hit anything moving or jumping at you is a hassle. Combine that with the Worst A.I I've ever seen in a Triple A game and you've got a disaster.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why it's such an absolute chore to play, I went into it optimistically, I was honestly hoping for a good time. I've sunk a ridiculous amount of hours into the fallout and Elder Scrolls series and I've enjoyed them a lot despite their flaws but 76 just stands apart, it's the black sheep of the series, the really boring black sheep. The main story is pathetic. Fallout 76 is the story of an insane man chasing quest markers around a map while pointless audio logs play in the background. You do not have any goals or direction, there are no characters to get you engaged or immersed in the game, just an endless series of quest markers to follow around. Saying the story is half-assed would be an overstatement, it's closer to no assed. The world is actually quite beautiful, the environments look really great and contain many different visually distinct areas, it's just too bad there's nothing in this world worth finding. There is literally no challenge in this game at all. Almost every enemy takes one or two shots to kill, while the player seems to be built like a tank. The power armor in this game works similar to the the star powerup in Super Mario Bros, you never die... At first I thought this was just because I was in a low-level area, but I ended up running into an enemy that was nearly double my level at one point and he was basically no threat whatsoever, I just back pedaled down the road and shot him in the face a few times. This game's difficulty feels like I'm playing fallout 4 on the "game journalist" difficulty. It is mind-numbingly boring and as a result of that I quickly started using fast travel whenever I possibly could to avoid fighting endless waves of impotent enemies. Let's talk about the loot, which is basically the only reason to play the game. There's no story and the enemies suck, so the loot has to be good right? This was the moment of revelation for me, this was the point that I figured it out, fallout 76 is not a Fallout game, it's a F-ing MMO. The core gameplay is there, it's a shooting game where you collect loot and level up, but all the joy of playing a Fallout game is just absent. There are no cool characters to meet, there are no interesting areas to explore I would go as far to say there really are no quests. Every area is just go here, kill dudes, pick up loot and return. And is the loot even worth anything? No of course not, MMOs are designed to waste your time, so you'll find 500000 pipe pistols that are all worth one cap. Thank You Todd. Let's talk about the cash shop. I don't really need to say anything about this. There is a cashshop and everyone knows cashshops are cancer. The leveling completely sucks, I have no idea how they F-ed this up so bad. The leveling up in Skyrim and fallout 4 was awesome, there were so many good perks to choose from and every level made you feel tangibly stronger. But leveling up in fallout 76 is pretty bland, the game randomizes the perks you can choose from and most of them are really anemic. I honestly couldn't tell much of a difference between my character when I was level one versus when I was level 20. It felt more or less the same. And because of the randomness, there's basically no chance that you can specialise towards a specific kind of build, you're just sort of stuck with whatever they give you. I imagine that after a few hundred hours of playtime you might be able to collect all the different perks, but there is no way I'm gonna suffer through to that point. This game handicaps itself by being so pathetically easy, why would you ever bother to team up with someone who's going to take half of your loot if you can play just as effectively solo. it's completely pointless. And even if you are brain-dead enough to actually need help with a quest good luck finding another player who has the exact same quest, is a similar level and actually wants to team up with you. You are probably more likely to win the lottery, so the co-op is totally pointless. The PvP is not only also pointless but it's also fundamentally broken. The way the PvP works is that when you shoot a player it sends a duel request and does a tiny amount of damage to that player, then if that player shoots back at you it starts a duel and then you both do full damage to each other. The problem here is that the person who sends the duel request by shooting first will always lose because the way you initiate the duel is by shooting back, meaning that if someone shoots you, you can just walk straight up to them, go into your inventory, put on your power armor, pop a psycho, get out your strongest shotgun and then just vats in on their head and get a critical and you'll kill them in one hit. You win the duel there's nothing they can do to stop you from doing this because they cannot damage you until you shoot back. it's just the most broken system. Expand

There are just robots(whom all have the exact same lines and nothing interesting to say) for story, and tapes on the ground where it is just dead bodies everywhere. The quests are all, go here, now go there, now go over here again. the crafting is frustrating, As firstly, there is barely anything to actually craft, and two, getting materials is limited to looting annoying items from abandoned houses-so the worst part of fallout 4 is the major mechanic of this game. No cutting trees, or bashing rocks to get basics. The perk system is an even more simplified terrible version of what we got in fallout 4, which was already a terrible system to begin with. VATS has been completely destroyed to a short lived auto aim.

Honestly, this game is a pure insult to the Fallout franchise, and in genuinely feels like Bethesda started making the game, got bored half way through and went, meh, release it like that no one will care. there is nothing redeeming about this game, even being able to do some things with your friends doesn't save this at all.

This is a cash grab nothing more it is not worth your £60$60 hell it's not even worth $10 it's a free to play game that's overcharging , it's a grind fest it has no story it has no real PVP it has microtransactions, it is supposed to be a nuclear war setting, but no nuclear war setting I have ever seen has green trees, blue sky or living vegetation, plus the sun is shining ??? It's just an inescapable fact in a world wide nuclear war Everything would be dead, sure a few animals and humans might survive but the life they would live in that world would look nothing like fallout 76 implies until at least 400- 500 years after the fact if at all. The gameplay is well lets just say its like destiny & no man's lie had a babe and no one wanted it... That actually caused me pain to think about ... Expand

I created an account on metacritic just to state how upset I am with all of the poor design choices Bethesda has made with this game. There are no NPCs because Bethesda was lazy and we can all see it. The holotapes are annoying and make for an unpleasant game experience. There is no incentive to interact with other players either for good or bad. Everything that was Fallout have been removed and you are left with a almost empty shell of a game.

Building is very disappointing and fairly buggy.
PVP is useless and there is no incentive to PVP unless you want to grief people by removing the floor beneath them.
Weapon modification has less then half the options in Fallout 4.
Gear drop is stupid since the good gear has level requirements way above your current level.
There is very little story and about 40% of it you have to read the rest is from holotapes.
There are NPC's but none are memorable or have anything to offer dialogue wise.
The world feel really lifeless, way to lifeless even for a post apocalyptic world. Teaming up with randoms is almost impossible.

There are bugs, but i have not encountered anything game breaking so far. Mostly animation issues and the occasional flying body. Your camp can get reset between log outs if someone else build their camp near yours.
The game is far to easy. You can kill a level 12 mob at level 4 with ease.
Microtransactions are there but can be ignored. But it would be better if they weren't there at all.

But with all that said the game is certainly not a 0/10. With friends you can have a good time but i would be surprised if anyone plays this to max level.

It's not worth the full 60 bucks so you are better of waiting for a sale and get it when it is below 25 bucks.

Maybe Fallout 76 will become like No Mans Sky and actually get good after 1 year of updates, but as it currently stands it's a soulless game made with no passion.

I remember when this game was first announced, people were worried that they'd be getting beat up by every "13" year old kid that decided to buy the game. There is a decent mechanic akin to that of Borderlands where both parties have to attack to initiate PVP, or listen to the same radio station. But now everyone is crying there isn't any PVP, I don't understand.

But the game itself while not perfect, has promise. If Bethesda constantly supports further development of the game we could eventually see more NPC's more quests given by NPC's, more areas, fixes to all your problems. The game is exactly as it stated it was going to be an Online Fallout and the mechanics reflect it (V.A.T.S is a big one), it never claimed to be Fallout MMO 76.

It is what it is, but it isn't a zero. I would recommend buying it if you're a fan of fallout, because there is still lore here, and if you're worried about them messing up the lore take the time to learn what happend and what is happening, don't expect a MMO, and don't expect the sun and the moon... especially from a new release from Bethesda.

There are many negative review citing stability and glitches and in my experience of 15 hours played so far have had no problems. To be honest it is one of the most stable Bethesda games on release ever (which is a huge feat given the conversion from single player to multiplayer on the same game engine).

I don't understand why some people are getting upset about the multiplayer. You barely run into any one else and when you do, they are friendly. I play Fallout alone and this makes it feel just as solo as their other games. It did JUST come out. Bugs are going to happen. They can't fix it all in one day. People got pissed off when the B.E.T.A was only at certain times on certain days but now you know why. To not overload the servers like what happened today.

The game, at its very core, is a boring slog of inane missions which are there as an extremely dull distraction from an empty and lackluster world. If the premise of the "game" you are attempting to sell relies primarily playing with friends, then the game needs to provide an interesting environment in which these experiences can happen in. This game utterly fails at that.

Now that the game is out, I must admit I'm actually having more fun than I anticipated, exploring and coming across SOME story elements and quests. But there is indeed more bad than good with Fallout 76. The fact that there's no LIVING humanoid NPCs, and instead literally hundreds of dead raiders, settlers, and First Responders, is a sign right there. Fallout, as a franchise, is all about the story and the RPG elements, so why make a Fallout that lacks those things. I do like the perk cards, it's a nice change of pace, and excluding the fact there's no NPCs alive, there is so much great potential for story. But other actual players also hampers this. Why would Vault 76 get the "best and brightest" for 25 years, only for all of them to unleash on each other the moment they step out of the vault... Again, pros and cons. This COULD be a great game if they add some NPCs, maybe an offline mode (because if it is only online there WILL come a day where the servers shut down and no one can play this game again), and please, Bethesda, tighten up the PvP. No one WANTS to get harassed constantly by someone else, even if they can't outright kill you. Had a guy follow me, shooting me, for maybe 10 minutes. He was higher level so I didn't dare fight back (tried that once before, ended with me dying of course). Also, bugs and glitches, but they aren't the worst, so not really worth mentioning, at least for me. 6/10, just an ok game, and a bad Fallout. (based on 22 hours in BETA, 7 hours in full game). The CAMP capacity of 400 lbs really puts a hamper on what you should pick up. This negatively impacts the players that like to hoard or collect items and weapons. I personally like it as if forces me to think of myself as an actual survivor trekking around and adventuring. Pick two or three guns, scrap the rest.

The actual world is well detailed and has fantastic quality. I want to commend the digital art team that built this world for their amazing work. Thank you!

There are new weapons, armor, foods, drugs. This really gives the player a choice on how to play. The items and armor have a condition system similar to Fallout 3. You can repair armor with the scrap you find in the world.

Base building is limited. You get a small area you can call your own. Using materials you find to create a little piece of home to call your own. The system is very similar to the Fallout 4 system except you need to find schematics for many of the buildable objects. Your base can be relocated for a fee payable in caps. Sleeping in a bed does not change time but can give you a rest bonus.

There are random world events that can trigger near you that give you a reward upon completion. Some of these event can be challenging and you will welcome help from nearby players.

Realism. This game has a forced mandatory hunger and hydration bar that tells you if you need to eat or drink water. This added feature makes living in the wild feel more realistic. Food cures your hunger and can give you a nice bonus stat. Same with water and other beverages.

The in game music for this title is better than all the other Fallout games, in my opinion. It flows well and changes based on where you are.

This game does not have object interaction. no dragging corpses out of the way, no picking up items. Corpses also despawn fairly quickly and you can be caught off guard by respawning enemies previously killed by another player.

Overall I am very pleased about this game.

Despite Bethesda's reputation for bugs and some valid issues that need to be addressed, this game does have some promise. It may not be anything like the typical singleplayer Fallout's, but it was never intended to be. That is what Fallout 5 is supposed to be for whenever that happens. Until then, I'm going to enjoy this refreshing take on a Fallout spin-off with my friends or even just solo.

A blast with friends in an immersive world and one of the best-designed environments I've ever seen in a Fallout game. It successfully translates that singleplayer fallout experience to a multiplayer format. It is a beautiful game.

There are too many bugs and gliches . The game is literally unplayable in the current state.
Bethesda has to fix the game and REMOVE the STASH limit as soon as possible or the game will remain a 0/10. I'm a big fan of fallout games and it makes me sad to leave such a review.

Environmental story telling has always been Bethesda’s forte, and this map, 4 times larger than fallout 4, is a shining example.

This game to me isn't a fallout game at all, when i think of Fallout games i think of these great characters and story telling and all of these interactions with characters and places. I think of Tenpenny Tower and Megaton, the Brotherhood and the Enclave, the NCR and Caesars Legion, heck even the Railroad and The Institute. All of these great rivaling factions interacting with each other and the characters within them telling their story, not through notes and holotapes, but through actions. The idea to do a Fallout game with none of that to me seems to me to be a terrible idea but i gave it a shot anyway. And after playing it for a few hours with a friend i can safely say that i will not be purchasing this game even if it somehow manages to get great reviews. The combat is so too weak to compete with any "decent shooter" and the pvp feels awful even with 2 separate teams fully committed to the pvp it just was a mess of poorly optimized laggy impossible garbage. While yes this can and will probably be fixed over the next 2 or more years of Bethesda fine tuning their game. The overall feel of the PVP combat itself was just boring and useless. And then there is the base building of this game that i just don't get at all, i don't remember seeing any positive reviews about building bases or anything with base building really in "Fallout 4" except maybe people liking what the modding community was doing. So i am really confused by Bethesda doubling down on the building aspect of "Fallout 4," and while yes they did make some minor improvements to this system, it still feels boring and empty if anything more so for the lack of NPCs floating around. If anything this will teach me to stop just throwing money at Bethesda for crapping out anything with the name "Fallout" on it and that is the only reason i am even giving this a score of 1 is because at least with this B.E.T.A. i was able to realize all of this and refund it, so it cost me nothing but taught me a great deal Expand

There are a lot of things that could be better tho, such as QoL mecanics, PTT isn't implemented, a FOV slider, better optimization. I would give it 7.5 right now if I could. I assume it could get better or worse depending on the content and the patches they will roll out in the following months.

If that sits well with you immediately, you'll love the game. If that immediately makes you cringe, you will probably not like this game. And if that makes you vaguely uncomfortable, but you're not sure why - give it a whirl and you'll probably find that it's a good experience.

The online nature of the game means that you'll find other real people in the world. I've found a number, and they've always added to my experience, however they chose to interact with me. My time in this game has been enriched by the people I've found, and we've only had the game for a couple of weeks now.

This game is also a Fallout game. There is immersive storytelling, a dark and interesting world, and a lot of fun, punchy gameplay. I find the contextual storytelling in this to be up there with the best games in the fallout series, and I have been constantly surprised at how well the writers can get me to emotionally invest in characters with only a few emails or a note left behind when they died.

For the rest, please play the game before judging it harshly. Stash size limits, an empty world, or any of the other WORST THINGS EVER all tend to fade into the background in the face of the fun experience of playing the actual game.

There is no singleplayer to be found in this game. Bestheda has never had a great multiplayer experience. So why did they think it was a good idea to make a multiplayer only game? This is obviously a lazy and greedy move from the developers. Instead of giving us both the singleplayer and the multiplayer for $60 like Rockstar, the greedy developers sold the muliplayer alone for $60. What's laughable is that this game doesn't even have the AAA quality to justify the $60. Selling a game with no offline campaign for $60 is a scam.

This game is online only. So once the developers switch off the servers, this game will end up in the trash can. Charging $60 for a game with no offline play is a cashgrab. I don't recommend this game at all, unless you want to support greedy developers. It's pathetic that most "AAA" developers have gotten greedy and lazy, to the point where they only sell you half the game at full price and not the full package. Online Only games are disgrace.

Bethesda has created a game that is neither a survival game, a role playing game, or an effective FPS. This game is an amalgamation of all the things it strives to be, yet it fails at identifying as any of them. It does not represent a true survival game out of fear that it would alienate players, it does not show its strength as a role playing game because it has no NPCs and your role playing is limited. Which is odd right? You'd think for a game that is marketed as an online RPG it would have role playing elements, but how can you even role play if you have to consent to be a raider? Last time I checked, raiders don't have to ask for consent to shoot and kill you. The shooting mechanics are about has clunky as they could be. Instead of striving to make things fair and balanced in PVP, they just made something that is clunky and painful to play, and doesn't attract FPS players at all. At least other survival games know they have to rely on PVP mechanics, DayZ's was more fluid and balanced than this game.

Fallout 76 was an ambitious project that strives to hit every niche, yet suffers horribly from an identify crisis and fails to even hit one of them. It does not appeal to my love for survival games because it fails at being one, it doesn't appeal to my love of role playing because I can't even role play as the one thing I'd want to be, and it doesn't appeal to my love for shooting games because it's clunky and horribly balanced. This game is an abomination.

Bethesda, listen to your consumers and stop acting like fools, it doesn't "just work" any more. Hopefully this game's reception will be enough of an eye opener.

You can play this game solo or with others! I have played with random people and by myself. I have also played the Beta and Ps4 day one version.

There is graphical bugs, but nothing even close to game breaking. Keep in mind this game just released a BETA for the game before it even launched ...problems were expected. I am personally happy about how quickly some of the problems were resolved.

There were major stability improvements since beta offering a much smoother gameplay day one. I’m looking forward to the planned updates that will add an even more enjoyable experience.

As a final note, I strongly dislike MMO; have tried many, but played few. Fallout 76 plays different than every MMO that I’ve seen or played. It keeps true to fallout feel, while throwing a little BioShock story telling into it. The game has a wonderful mix of new and old mechanics that will bring a refreshing experience to present and future.

So utterly disappointing and flawed in every possible way… The first few hours, most of it can be ignored, and occasionally the flaws can be forgotten, but only briefly before they come storming back to the forefront. An awful, boring, empty, pointless experience. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. It's worth mentioning that there has already been a Bethesda title that was equally as unimpressive: The Elder Scrolls Online - but looking at it now, it has transformed into one of the best MMOs out there. There's always the hope the Fallout 76 develops the same way and becomes something special, but for now, that seems impossible. It's a world away from that.

Fallout 76 isn't your typical fallout experience. You don't have NPCs or dialogue, but instead get real players that should fill this void - that ultimately fails to do so. It does some things right, but as of now I cannot recommend getting this game as long as it stays a broken and boring mess that it is right now.

Fallout 76 is the series’ Freshman introduction into the world of online, multiplayer games. As a result, we are experiencing all of the awkwardness and clumsiness associated with that season of life. It is imperfect and a bit uncomfortable, but I see opportunity for Fallout 76 to be more than it presently it - to be a truly great, rich Fallout experience.
