Was willing to get past the disappointment of the whole "no npc's" thing and bought the game. Have to say sad does not begin to describe how this game is, the bugs would be tolerable if the story was interesting (spoiler alert it isn't) while the combat remains clunky and unrefined at best.

o yes the game has it's flaws but as i stated earlier the bugs just break so much of this that it feels like a slap in the face that bethesda wants 60 bucks for this, i mean pubg has fewer issues than this (which is saying something). For instance the t-pose enemies, quest markers over dead corpses that have nothing to do with the quest, c.a.m.p setup destroying your building to force you to start over, enemies that LITERALLY do not die no matter how much you shoot or hit them, and mothman who i happened to come across and yes was the hostile variant who stood in front of me while he watched me kill him after 10 minutes of me hacking away at him. So yes the issues in this aren't small not by a long shot.

In short it's a buggy game that lacks depth while providing the user a very unsatisfying experience overall. So while people say "It's a multiplayer spin off it's not meant for you it's meant to be played with friends", just remember that playing games with friends is enjoyable in general, you could do the same in CoD, fortnite, LoL, Overwatch or so many other games and have just as much fun and enjoyment (if not more in all) and feel better than myself for putting up with this game.

The game is literally the previous game fallout 4, but some how uglier buggier and all of the story ripped out of it. But they did add online so you can all join together and talk about how crappy the game is.

This is a no effort game! On top of this without the characters within the Fallout Universe to interact with it removes the soul of Fallout.
It's a Survival game with a Fallout skin. Furthermore the bugs and continued use of the creation engine without the engine being fixed is just bad not even including the motion sickness reported by myself and 1/2 of the people watching my stream

They have no intent on fixing this.
Lastly, Fallout is about Choice and Consequence. This world has no choices to be made and no consequences to suffer or enjoy.
I won't even talk about the broken PvP or how the system is far too easy to abuse. Just this game, is just bad as a game, it's terrible and fails on so many levels as a game and as a Fallout Game It is WORSE than Brotherhood of Steel.
I never thought I'd say that but I'd rather play Fallout: BoS than this.

Well, no, Bethesda used a fallout title to get some people to buy it. The game is not new, but 95% consists of fallout 4, with the same presets. There is a difference between the 4th part and f76 - 200 years, but the world hasn’t changed in that time, seriously? There are many bugs, and the price of this game, to put it mildly, is a bit overpriced. Lor? Forget it. Super mutants a couple of decades before the creator?

    Hello, plot, where are you?
You are a resident of the refuge, go out with your neighbors. What to do? That's right, collect garbage, make a house of **** and shoot each other. Most recently, have you been hiding from global nuclear war? Now we find the access codes and we will launch rockets left and right.

Tasks? Quests? When I played f4 I couldn’t have thought that the quests of Preston Garvey about the cleansing of settlements, against the background of a new game of the series, would seem to me perfectly thought out.

Buggy sandbox without a plot, a game parasitizing on a great name.
It is a pity you can not put a negative assessment.

Some 10 years ago such a game would not even be released, with so many bugs. Now it has become the norm. Here you share with bugs, a lot of them - we will decide. Previously, this was what beta testing was necessary for.

People who praise such **** in 10 years will happily consume even more flawed **** justifying the laziness and greed of publishers and developers.

P.S. To sell THIS at the price of RDR2 is a standard of impudence.

First off this is much more of an online Survival/ Sandbox/RPG than an MMO. For me that is a good thing. There is a limited number of people in a world at anytime. I see one or two people occasionally, maybe participate in an event with them then we go on our own way. I like that I can join my friends worlds and play together, and I love that you can fast travel to your teammates camps for free which will definitely come in handy later in the game. People have complained about people running and jumping and blocking doorways, I personally have not had this issue even once.

I have not had any bugs so far, and I have only lagged twice. I am playing on a PS4 pro though so I can't speak for other consoles.

At first the stash limit was upsetting for me, until I read up on it and learned that I was really just doing it wrong. Scrap your junk first and space is no longer an issue. I mean sure I can't store more than a few weapons and armor but it is much more worth it to scrap them as you have a high chance of learning a MOD for that weapon (considering the steep price for plans in this game it is extremely valuable).

The C.A.M.P. building is fun for me. I've built a nice two story shack, have all my crafting, power, and a decent amount of defence. It does mildly suck that I don't have everything unlocked from the get go, but that is kind of the point of the game. My favorite part of Fallout 4 was building up my settlements, and I'd have an insanely advanced settlement before level 10 which honestly didn't make sense. Part of me enjoys that I have to put more effort into it for 76.

I enjoy the survival aspect of the game, I knew it was going to be there going in so it wasn't a surprise for me. I craft up food and/or water when I need to but I actually find a decent amount of food just from looting, and prewar food doesn't decay like food you make.. Really making disease free water is more time consuming but I know that I will get plans for a water purifier later on and that won't be much of an issue anymore.

Haven't seen a nuke yet, and the nukes work differently than you'd expect from what I read so I'm not worried about that. No one has tried to grief me in any way shape or form. I'm aware it may become more of a thing later on but they did add a lot of things to make it entirely unbeneficial to PK. They also say they are planning on making private worlds a thing early on so I'm excited for that.

The leveling of enemies is actually pretty good. I have not ran in to anything more than 5 levels above me (except for one scary legendary encounter which I just hid in my shack during) but I have been doing my quests and sticking to the starting area, like any survival game if you explore too far ahead too fast you'd expect to get destroyed. I've died twice and you drop a SMALL amount of junk from your inventory. It really doesn't affect anything though as junk is readily available everywhere. You don't lose any caps so that is good.

There is much more of a variety of enemies and wildlife than the last game, and this is exciting for me. I've already seen many new creatures and I haven't even fully explored the forest area yet.

On to things I don't like, yeah unless you wanna read text and listen to holotapes the story is not going to exist. However, there are some interesting robot dialogs as well as the hilarious traveling super mutant merchant you may happen upon. I had a robot vendor tell me there is nothing better than a woman in uniform (which my character is wearing). So while the story is lacking there are still some fun things you can find if you keep your eyes and ears open.

The proportion of caps earned to cost of buying things is extremely high. Any weapon only sells for MAYBE 5 caps early on usually 2, where plans to build and mod new things are anywhere from 100-500 caps. Which is why I mentioned earlier scrap, scrap, scrap. I don't use the drugs in th game so I sell all my extra aid that isn't food, water, radaway or stimpacks. I also am beginning to make a pretty penny by bulking up my surplus of some items like steel scraps and selling them (you can only sell in bulk). I'm guessing that player trading will be a bigger source of income for me eventually.

There isn't enough armor drops (yet). I hope it will increase. This means I have a ton of available weapon mods but few for armor.

As far as graphics I am neutral. It's the same as fall out 4 with a better environment.

All in all I have a lot of hope for this game. I was expecting it to be a cross between fallout 4 and an open minecraft world (I love minecraft) and honestly that's exactly what it has been so far. If you don't go into the game expecting an amazing fallout rpg story and nitpicking everything it's actually a lot of fun.

PS to all the babies whining about micro transactions you can get that currency in game too, quite easily.

On top of it all, playing it literally makes me sick. The FOV is so bad, the framerate so poor and inconsistency, a terrible blur you can't disable covering everything.

Having played the beta and live, I can say that my experience playing solo was just ok.

I enjoy exploring a new wasteland with fallout mechanics. But, the lack of an engaging story and non-robot npcs is sorely missed.

The idea that I can run around a wasteland with friends is fun, and its an easy world to slip into. Of all the things that disappoint me about Fallout 76, the Bethesda apologists have to be the worst part. Anyone making a claim that any and every bad review of this game is coming from someone who hasn't played it is making a massive generalization and huge logical fallacy. But nothing they do can amount to the mistake Bethesda made when they decided to make this game.

    Let me be clear
Of all the things that disappoint me about Fallout 76, the Bethesda apologists have to be the worst part. Anyone making a claim that any and every bad review of this game is coming from someone who hasn't played it is making a massive generalization and huge logical fallacy. But nothing they do can amount to the mistake Bethesda made when they decided to make this game.

Let me be clear about a couple things first: I wanted a multiplayer Fallout game; I wanted a new setting, and the one they chose for Fallout 76 is great; I've been a lifelong fan of Bethesda despite a long history of flawed launches and games that are total messes.

And let's also be clear about a things on the flip side: Fallout 76 is not a Fallout game and never should have been referred to as such; Bethesda is a different company today than they were years ago, and not in a good way; Fallout 76 on its own is an awful title intended to exploit consumers. And because I'll inevitably be referred to by some Bethesda apologist sheep as a "salty fanboy who doesn't have the game" I'll just go ahead and prove everything I've said.

    1. Fallout traditionally is unpredictable and focuses VERY heavily on choice. One action here creates a totally different scenario at this point. Characters "remember" your choices and the world feels alive as a result. But Fallout 76 does not have a single NPC in it. They used this as a selling point for this game! Every quest is predictable. For every fetch marker that tells you to talk to Person A, you already know that they're dead or gone. If the game world is inherently dead, then it renders the potential to have any meaningful choice and any semblance of gravity completely null. If the game world is dead, the game is dead, and it's boring to watch, boring to play, and a lazy design decision.

    2. The only polished feature in this game is the Atom Shop, where you pay real money to buy cosmetics and features in the game. I suppose it's worth noting that you don't have to buy Atoms to get them, but it's yet another game where Bethesda needlessly implemented microtransactions and made it a center piece of the game. Fallout Shelter is an entirely single-player game and relies on the player buying loot boxes to progress. It's also worth noting that features that players (including the ones mindlessly rating the game as a 10) asked for simple QoL features that every game has natively, like ultra-wide support, FOV sliders, and oh... I don't know... not enabling speed hacks on the server by editing a client configuration file.

    3. This game cannot be refunded. For some reason I cannot fathom, no one is talking about this. It's very clearly written on Bethesda.net under their store policy that all digital purchases that are redeemed cannot under any circumstances except those as required by law be refunded by Bethesda. At first, I wondered why they wouldn't release the game on Steam. I thought it might have to do with aggregate user reviews, and maybe that's part of it, but the main reason is almost certainly the fact that Steam would refund people who purchased Fallout 76 if they didn't like it, and it would seem that most don't. Pre-orders could be cancelled had they not been redeemed, but anything purchased or redeemed through the Bethesda launcher itself cannot and will not be unless there is a change in Bethesda's policy.

    4. No modding support until late 2019. This is asinine. They claim their upgrades to the Creation Engine are partly to help modders create content, and yet they hold off on releasing it for Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, both games that seriously needed modders' help just to get the game to run at an acceptable level. Regardless of whether or not they support modding, the game is an open book. Go ahead and edit packets and modify files, the server doesn't check to see if any of it's modified. There's a new account every day of someone exploiting the game. A few hours ago, someone figured out how to access nuke launch codes whenever they want.

    5. Reused assets, retconned lore. Yeah, I'm a Fallout fanboy. I only care that the story I spent hours reading about in previous Fallout games is worthless in the face of Fallout 76 and Emil Pagliarulo. Thanks for the radiant quests, I guess I'll take those in exchange for you spitting on the grave of Interplay and Black Isle who, might I add, exuded more creativity and passion in a few days than the Bethesda of today can in years.

    6. They are still using an engine from 2006 at the earliest. If you feed me a lie about how the Creation Engine isn't that old, you have no idea what you're talking about. The engine version they licensed comes from the version they used for Oblivion at the earliest, Fallout 3 at the latest. That's the version they were allowed to work on for the Creation Engine. It is a budget engine covered in duct tape, and the fact they're using it still shows they have zero respect for you and I as fans.

Yes, they add more depth, but it makes sense in this case. It's only 25 years after the bombs dropped, AND there is the threat of the Scorched, which you need to nuke to defeat. This game is still fun, and because of that, this game deserves less hate. People keep talking about "Oh, it's buggy" and "Oh, it crashes". 1: It is not buggy and 2: It does not crash. If you enjoy experiencing the lore or narrative of Fallout, this is not a game for you. If you enjoy interesting companions who grow alongside you, this is not a game for you. If you enjoy a world that feels lived in, this is not a game for you. However, if you played one of the Fallout games and thought, "This would be even better if my friend could jump in," then this is the game for you. You can spend endless hours running around with your friends, building bases, completing quests, or hunting down strange enemies. I would not, however, recommend playing this game solo. If you play this game solo, every minor issue will become frustrating, and the major issues will be rage-inducing. You'll find yourself in encounters which were obviously designed for multiple players, often resulting in your own death or retreat.
Overall, Fallout 76 is mediocre. Yes, you can find some fun in it, but you will have to deal with many technical issues (at least for now) and there is not a very good story behind the game. I would recommend playing this game with friends or not at all.

Writing a review because I know mostly vocal negative gamers will share their experience. Most of those who liked the game will stay silent and won't complain.

With that said, let me start by saying that I love this game, and I'd really put it down for positive instead of mixed, but THIS GAME IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY but some of us genuinely love it! This is not singleplayer Fallout

With that said, let me start by saying that I love this game, and I'd really put it down for positive instead of mixed, but THIS GAME IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY but some of us genuinely love it! This is not singleplayer Fallout experience and it's not meant to be, but that's what most criticisms are about. If you're really interested, I'd look at both side of the story, not just the negative or positive.

Firstly, the game feels like Fallout 4. It was designed to be multiplayer Fallout 4. It's not Rust, or Ark, or PUBG. It feels like F4. It's exploration survival. I've played solo and that is the most accurate way I can describe it. However, as it is meant to be multiplayer, there are features added and taken away. It is the nature of the genre. Really if you stopped reading my review by now, the one thing you should take away is that it is meant to be a multiplayer! It's also not meant to be Fallout 5.

Onto gameplay, combat mostly similar to Fallout 4 with improved melee. Obviously, time stopping/delaying VATS was taken out, but real time VATS has its advantages. If you're getting swarmed and you cant aim quick, use VATS. It's also great with melee.

Crafting is amazing! There's so many stuff to craft. Crafting was present in F4, but this is the first time I've actively used the crafting system, and had positive experience with it. CAMP system though needs improvement. Not a lot of options atm, but probably less priority than fixing the game.

The big thing is probably the quest system. There is a narrative. Like F3 and F4 though, the main quests are mediocre but where they really shine is the side quests. Not all quests end up with dead people at the end or robots. This is probably most likely from people who just rushed through the main story. There are so many other things to do! They're not just fetch quests either. The addition of events makes it more fun, but again, this is designed for multiplayer. I've played an event solo. It is difficult but doable. But when I joined other people, it was rewarding to work on something together

It is a mod of fallout 4 with multiplayer at full price. It has bugs everywhere and the story is very limited. No NPCs and how multiplayer handles with missions between players is just broken. This is just depressing because i was looking forward to fallout 76 and now I just see trash. The game has exploits from day 1 and the engine it uses was old and outdated when fallout 4 came out.

Lets just be honest up front about what Bethesda was not so honest about: there is no solo play option (like every other fallout before this one). Clarifying, on the day of release, that Bethesda meant you can play along rather than with a team was a serious lapse of integrity.

This is essentially World of Warcraft with a Fallout skin.

The lack of a solo play option is only made worse by the processes and glitches that make the game unenjoyable if no unplayable. Stalking a target? Hope some wanker with a machete doesn't go charging in screwing it up and provoking your target into a general melee that you barely escape from. The initial round of guns is laughable. They are so inaccurate, you are better off using stick (which will do more damage anyway). When they do land, they are the equivalent of landing a rough smooch on your target. Mod them to more functional and effective? Sure, all you have to do is level up 20 times and hope the random perk generator allows you to do so. That is, if you can find all the materials and not have them stolen. Then you just have to find a useful amount of ammunition, which should not be a problem in West Virginia where practically every house has a gun and ammunition. Not so with Bethesda's representation ... which is great, because hunting is critical to survival with the addition of a food and water system that is fun for about fifteen minutes and then just becomes tedious. It's somehow like an even more pointless minecraft.

Oh yeah, you can also be randomly whacked by some immature 14 year old at any second, or just a random spawn that drops on top of you ... as you arrive and search for something that some other player just looted.

Awesome this is not. I have played other poor games, but this is the first time I have ever wanted my money back immediately.

It's Interesting how gaming 'journalists' are so slow to post their thoughts on this one. Hell, Forbes even came out with an article saying 'Don't trust early Fallout 76 reviews'. There is no reason to even glance at game review sites anymore.

when you settle for less, then you get less. That's what gamers are getting with Bethesda. Todd Howard of Bethesda said in an interview that they are not going to make a new engine because it takes too long to learn how to develop for it. He said they are used to the one they have and are just going to keep patching it up even with the new Elder Scrolls 6. They have no intentions on making a new engine. Why.... well I think they don't want to spend the money or time to do so. If gamers would quit settling for less, then you might get the game you want WITH great current graphics. I'm SURE you wouldn't complain about having it all.

A hallmark of the Fallout series IS the interaction with the various inhabitants of the wasteland and the moral decisions that come from those interactions. You've essentially gutted the core from the Fallout experience! It hoinestly feels like the decision to remove any NPCs was made out of pure laziness or an effort to cut development costs down to the ground. I got a squad together to try the multiplayer aspect out and its nice to play together but the game itself just feels boring! If you enjoyed aspects of the game like crafting, thats been gutted too. I'm over 30 hours in, level 35, and there's still tons of content, areas to explore, and story to dig into. So to make things simple, I'll dig into what this game offers and what it lacks. Also as a side note, I don't factor in bugs with my reviews, as I'm rating the game based off of fun factor, as that's what people play games for.

Pros of Fallout 76 (Consider this all to be for unmodded Fallout)
The best character customization Fallout has ever had. (Layered armor/clothing)

    The best weapon/armor crafting

The simplest survival mechanics, balance between eating, drinking, and radiation

    The largest most diverse world

    The largest variety of enemies

    The most weapons

The best shooting (though admittedly, Fallout shooting is not amazing)

More perks than Fallout has ever had.

True perk builds. I've seen tons of perks to improve shotguns, pistols, melee weapons, big guns, laser weapons, automatic rifles, automatic pistols, and more. And yes, I mean more than Fallout 3, NV, or 4 had combined. If you want to try a build, it's likely in the game. All weapon types finally seem viable.

Multiple builds per character thanks to the way that perk cards work. You don't need to make a new character if your build ends up with something that you don't care for. You can simply swap the card to suit your needs, assuming you have the proper card.

Great soundtrack. I've heard songs from Fallout 3 as well as many new tracks put into the game. The ambient world music is amazing as well, and helps to capture the vibe of the different biomes. Boss creatures have their own music as well which really adds to the action when they show up.

Unrestricted player trading. This is balanced by the fact that weapons and armor have levels to keep them in check. They also break, so being equipped with top tier gear only matters if you can maintain it. The best part about this though, is that you can sell things to anyone or you can just drop them. It keeps groups organized and ready when you have a good balance of food and ammo. It helps if you have a steady team where one person does the crafting/repairs so that you can build your character differently. This goes more into reinforcing the team aspect of the game which many games nowadays try to include and fail miserably.

Attention to small details. Most of your story comes from notes and terminals, so if you're the type to read those things, this game has a ton of depth.

Cons of Fallout 76 (Some of these are subjective. The PvP is not)
PvP is unrewarding garbage. The mechanics to enter PvP are terrible and serve as a major annoyance. Being able to see everyone on the map invites griefing, and there's essentially no reward for killing other players or destroying their property. There's no satisfaction whatsoever in getting a high bounty, and because when you're wanted, everyone can find you, there's all risk. That said, there is a dedicated PvP which is better, as everyone there has the same intention and you don't find yourself getting punished by systems that shouldn't be in play. This stops any player from living the fantasy of being a wasteland raider who ambushes and kills unsuspecting people.

While there are NPCs, they're all robots or super mutants. This isn't inherently bad, but it makes the characters you encounter less surprising. They do have unique voices, but this also means that there are no real settlements other than those made by players for players, and no one is going to congregate while the game is new and full of things to do and find.
Lack of nonhuman NPCs means that there are no Raiders as well. This is where I start deducting from the game's score. If the PvP worked fine it wouldn't be an issue, but because it doesn't, the wasteland feels less immersive when you know you'll never run into raiders trying to own all they can by force.

A few of the perk setups are badly designed. Most perks stack in the game, but Lockpicking and Hacking don't. Meaning that there's close to no chance that you'll be unlocking max level anything before hitting endgame. You can't just stack multiple of the same for these two cards to improve at it and that leaves it fully to RNG.

The respawn system. Respawning in this game really detracts from the danger of the wastes. When you die you can just come back nearby until all the enemies are dead. Fallout with a lack of gameovers makes things feel pretty easy and that's a turn off to a lot of people. This bothers me most in PvP however, as I can kill a wanted player and he can spawn back, until I run out of healing items.

The only reason people hate on this game is because it has Fallout in the title.

Fallout used to be one of my favourite game franchises, built upon the foundation of great storytelling, engaging and rewarding RPG gameplay, and fantastical world building; Fallout 76 goes against everything previous fans of the franchise knew and loved, and appeals to fans of online survival games, rather than its core fan base.

At release there are many issues with the game, including but not limited to:

    - No NPC quest givers. If anyone remembers the monotonous Preston Garvey quests of Fallout 4, be prepared to re-experience this again, except being given active quests from a computer. Storytelling is done solely through the use of hollotapes and somewhat creative uses of in-game object placement.

    - An aging engine. Fallout 76 runs of the creation engine, and whilst the game can be visually stunning at times, is host to many problems. Graphical issues, technical hiccups, texture pop-ins, and consistent optimization issues on all currently released platforms.

    - Always on mic. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn off the audio of other players you encounter in the game. A right bummer if all you can hear down your headset is a screaming child!

    - Cosmetic microtransactions. Enough said.

    - Quite honestly too many problems to list. Read up on some more in-depth reviews, or if you have the game, play it to experience these blatant issues in their full glory.

The game is a shameless attempt at a cash grab to capitalize on the popularity of games like Rust and Ark Survival evolved, whilst also utilizing the fallout world to sell copies of the game to unsuspecting Fallout fans. Its like if Valve released Half life 3 as a battle royal game exclusively for google cardboard. You don’t do it…

Fallout 76 is a great commentary on the modern-day gaming industry, how publishers are adhering to the wants and needs of investors over long-term fans. Companies such as Bethesda are falling out of touch with their audience, and it is clearly shown in how Fallout 76 was marketed from its initial E3 reveal. Fallout 76 was doomed to fail from the start.

in its current state, Fallout 76 is one of the worst AAA published games of the year.

It is missing support for 21:9 and other formats, its locked at 60fps and generally just very badly optimized. The response from Bethesda when these issues arise are jokes about how "haha bugs again how typical us xD", instead of taking it seriously, and when they do issue out a statement about some of the gamebreaking issues, they just say it won't be out on launch, we'll fix it in the future sometime (maybe). It seems like they have stopped caring and they think this is somehow an acceptable state to put out a Bethesda game. It even has a bug that deletes your game for clicking play, how is that even possible? The game barely has any NPCs, devoid of any real story, and generally just feels soulless. it might be fun if you roleplay with your friends though, i'll give it that. After playing the B.E.T.A. and the game, i feel very dissapointed, its feels like a early access game, with terrible microtransactions. old outdated engine and generally unfinished in every sense of the word. At 60 usd... I haven't been this disappointed in a game since No Man's Sky. And this isn't an indie company either, this is Bethesda. This is completely unnacceptable. Bethesda should just stick to Singleplayer experiences, that's what they're good at, they're clearly incompetent at this. And if they intend to use the same engine for the new elder scrolls game, as they've stated, I will be severely dissapointed at that too, they NEED to make a new engine, its very outdated and its clearly not made for multiplayer, they need a new one. This game is a disgrace and I can't give it anything else than a 0. Expand

It is clear to me that this was a cash grab for Bethesda and I will not be making the mistake of preordering games from them in the future. If you like mindless shooters with absolutely no story and **** graphics, then this game is for you. I personally play games for the escapism aspect and this game is completely lacking there. There seems to be no real point to this game, "quests" disappear when you die, and you have to pay caps to respawn in less than convenient locations. No, I am not a bot, or someone paid to write a bad review...I am in fact an unhappy customer who wasted way too much money on this garbage game. Maybe Bethesda should actually take customer satisfaction into account instead of pointing the finger at the bad reviews and saying "fake news". Expand

As far as games go this is rather 'meh'. It is a Rust and Ark clone, and a rather again 'meh' one at that. This game really suffers from Bethesda's total lack of experience in making a multiplayer game. The lack of NPCs is just ridiculous, it makes everything seem worthless. There is no point in doing any quests to 'save' or 'find' people because who cares? They're already dead any way.As far as games go this is rather 'meh'. The lack of NPCs is just ridiculous, it makes everything seem worthless. There is no point in doing any quests to 'save' or 'find' people because who cares? They're already dead any way. The total lack of a story also badly hinders this game. Following an overseer, and never meeting them, makes your quest out to feel worthless. It is only there to push you around the map and introduce you to game mechanics. It's a tutorial and nothing more. The game keeps the same issues and glitches from Fallout 4, which for 2018 is unacceptable for a full priced game. The fact that gear has levels that lock you out of them makes the idea of looting less appealing, you might find a gun you have wanted to use all game, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to use it any time soon. The leveling system is poor, choosing cards just isn't fun and it forces you to use that planning website to make a good build. Card packs are kind of boring, having the ability to either help you or just do nothing. While at lower levels it is a great thing it soon becomes meaningless. In an online game you should be able to refund the cards and get new ones to be able to make the system less annoying, even if you had to spend caps it would still be appreciated. VATs is a glorified aim bot and nothing more. The lack of push-to-talk on release is unacceptable for a PC game as is the lack of any form of text chat, which makes communicating impossible for those who do not want to/are unable to use a microphone. And lastly the survival elements are pointless. They are only a slight annoyance and not a real survival feature. All it does is make it annoying to heal using food or water because then you might have to deal with a drop to your total AP. And food and water is everywhere so that's not even an issue. Finally the state the PC version launched in is awful, the game can freeze upwards of 15 seconds for no reason on higher graphics presets to the point where even top line computers can only play it on high or medium to completely avoid freezing. This game needs heavy optimizing and soon.

Now. Onto the positives. Playing with friends, or even strangers if somehow they also speak with a mic and join your team, is surprisingly fun. Looting and killing with friends is great, it's just a shame that it isn't a normal Fallout game. The shooting and attacking is the same as Fallout 4, if not slightly better, so it works perfectly fine, it's just not spectacular. Building a base or modifying weapons/items is still just as fun as in Fallout 4 but since you can do it anywhere it's even better. However, if you didn't like it at all in Fallout 4 you probably won't here so be warned.

So after all of this I honestly don't know if I should recommend it. If you have friends that have bought it chances are you'll be able to have a lot of fun with them in this game, but it's likely you could have more fun in other games. So if you are planning on buying this please make sure that you know people getting it, make sure you get it on the same device because this game doesn't have cross-play, which is kind of bad. So while you could play this game and have fun I would recommend being cautious with this game, wait for lots of respected reviewers to talk about it, talk with friends and even watch some streams on it. Definitely deserving of a 6/10 with lots of room to improve. Bethesda just needs to keep working on it and do their best to fix all of these issues, and soon.

And seriously, items have level requirements, c'mon! The character building is even worse than Fallout 4: some randomized cards, really? You can't build your character any way you want, you just add the cards you happen to get from the packs. There are no skills, stats mean nothing and levels don't matter at all. There's no challenge and the AI is hopeless. Only fun thing in this game is shooting. For a while. Once you get bored of that, you literally run out of things to do.

I have finally lost all my hope for Bethesda and I will most likely not buy a single Fallout title again. Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 have been so bad and this game made me realize how far Bethesda has driven the franchise from the original ones. These are not Fallout games, no matter how much you try to give them the same name. Fallout franchise is dead to me and I will never pre-order anything from Bethesda again. Good job, Todd Howard!

I'm a longtime fan of the franchise. I've played all of them except Brotherhood, and I started with them as a child. I've liked every one. I do enjoy 76 so far, but for slightly different reasons than the last games.

So far, Fallout games have been about exploration, marked and unmarked locations to discover and explore, a story to experience as you go through the world, side quests that usually have some humor or a bit of information about the larger world to add to our understanding of the setting. Well, 76 does have all of these things. 76 manages to do a lot of these things that we expect from a Fallout title. The thing it does not do, that (most) of the previous titles did have, is player choice in the narrative, and NPC interactions.

The difference between this and previous games is that all of the NPC's we would normally talk with, died shortly before the player shows up. We find the remains of battles and we find their bodies and such. The plot is discovering why and how, so we won't go into that, but the point is that the normal NPC interaction that people are used to in these games is missing. We do most of the lore discovery, and most of the storytelling, is done through notes and terminals and holotape recordings. Which is fine for learning about the world, and it's adequate for telling us information, and there have already been a few holotapes that were dramatic and conveyed emotion to me, but I understand the criticism that many people have. It's adequate for conveying storytelling, but it's not that interaction that people are used to. They want to talk to people. It's a bit unfortunate that a lot of the other reviews are very hard on the game and this seems to be the most common reason. Bethesda said from the start that they want to roll with the idea that every human you come across is another actual human player. This was the game's pitch, it's what made it unique. Someone at the company had this idea and they rolled with it. This was clear from the start, so a lot of these reviews that seem to be disappointed by the lack of NPC's is a bit perplexing.

It's also worth noting, on the lack of NPC issue, that there is more voice acting and recorded dialogue for this game than every other game combined. Look it up on google, it's a fact. So it's not that there just isn't any voice acting or things to learn from people. It's just that the people are all dead, and leaving their diaries for the player to discover. It's not actually all that much different than an NPC going on a longwinded story of his recent events. One of the criticisms of New Vegas is that NPC's will occasionally stand there and go on and on spilling information to the player. It's not that different in cases like this.

The positive aspects about the game are that it has many new enemy types, a map 4 times larger than 4's map, more voice acted recorded dialogue than the previous games, and the sidequests are just as involved as the previous games. The storytelling is done through discovery, so the player is more like an investigator after the fact, rather than in the middle of events, but the tone this sets up is unique and works.

It's missing a couple things though, so I wish I could give it an 8.5 instead of 9. The PC version should allow for DoF adjusting, widescreen support, Push To Talk, rendering distance options, and other quality-of-life options that PC players are used to that scale with the strength of their machine, and aren't uniform like on consoles.

Overall, the game offers many of the things we expect from Bethesda's Fallouts. Marked and unmarked locations to explore, some interesting quests, discovering lore about the setting, etc. It ends up being a very different experience than the other Fallouts, because you are an investigator after the events, but this is just a different tone of game. I've been enjoying it so far, and I understand that it's a very different tone than most other Fallout games. I think at the end of the day, whether you like it or not mostly hinges on whether or not you mind that you're coming by after the events and discovering what happened or if you want to be in the middle of them. This tone is a lot different and might not be for everyone.

It's not being 'whiny' for voicing displeasure to a company instead of being 'grateful' I get to give them my money. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but you signed up for the single player business and that's where you should stay. Expand

Fallout 76 is a beta that they want you to buy for full price. They should have gone with Steam Greenlight if they had any respect for their customers.

So utterly disappointing and flawed in every possible way… The first few hours, most of it can be ignored, and occasionally the flaws can be forgotten, but only briefly before they come storming back to the forefront. An awful, boring, empty, pointless experience. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. It's worth mentioning that there has already been a Bethesda title that was equally as unimpressive: The Elder Scrolls Online - but looking at it now, it has transformed into one of the best MMOs out there. There's always the hope the Fallout 76 develops the same way and becomes something special, but for now, that seems impossible. It's a world away from that.

Fallout 76 isn't your typical fallout experience. You don't have NPCs or dialogue, but instead get real players that should fill this void - that ultimately fails to do so. It does some things right, but as of now I cannot recommend getting this game as long as it stays a broken and boring mess that it is right now.

Fallout 76 is the series’ Freshman introduction into the world of online, multiplayer games. As a result, we are experiencing all of the awkwardness and clumsiness associated with that season of life. It is imperfect and a bit uncomfortable, but I see opportunity for Fallout 76 to be more than it presently it - to be a truly great, rich Fallout experience.
