I love the artstyle but am VERY disappointed with the lack of an engaging story, the extremely repetitive and stale missions and enemies, and the few planets you visit. In the COMPETITIVE mode, it is an even sadder story. You can not communicate at all to the competition or say "good game" between matches, and even more mind boggling - you can not even talk to your whole team unless they're on your friends list and you've added them to your squad as well. You heard me right - they thought it was a smart idea to create a competitive team game where you cannot communicate and coordinate with others, only your friends. So much for a connected game. The radar also shows you where every enemy is, all the time. So there is very little excitement and ambushing people in the competitive, and less challenge in the story mode. If other games follow this trend, say goodbye to teamwork, stealth tactics, and finding new friends in games. Expand

Each planet feels very empty with only randomly spawning enemies to fill in the spaces, sometimes a random event will spawn but those can take up to 2 hours and end in roughly 2 minutes...there's no way to communicate with the other people unless they are in your fireteam, no squad commands or nothing, dont come on Destiny looking to make any friends or play cooperatively, communicating with other players was not a priority in Bungie's pseudo MMO multiplayer shooter

We are still waiting for greatness, because Destiny just wasent it for me, we still have Bloodbourne but im still unimpressed by next gen

Some of the dumbest excuses but my only complaints with the game is the story isn't as good as I would've expected and that the Crucible reward system isn't very "rewarding" to players that do good, for instance I'd finish MVP in a match and get no rewards whatsoever yet someone will finish last and get 2 rare items -____- but these are minor complaints and I'm sure Bungie can and will sort them out, but either than that I strongly recommend Destiny, very deserving of a rating of 8. It's almost justified, too; regardless of your opinions on Halo or Call of Duty, they're both immensely successful franchises and a game by the developer of one and producer of another was bound to garner attention.

Unfortunately, living up to its own hype was a tall order for Destiny. It's graphically unimpressive, fails to innovate on any core features and relies on a particularly bland, uninspired plot to push the player through its core missions. The conspicuous absence of universe building outside of a brief setup dialogue close to the beginning of the game is disappointing in a game purporting to be an 'MMO' FPS.

However, it does have its merits. At its core, Destiny is a perfectly solid multiplayer shooter, bearing many resemblances to Borderlands and in some ways Defiance. It controls well, the open-world segments - though obscured as 'patrol missions' - are fun to roam around, enemies provide 'cause for concern' if only rarely actual challenge, and progression is smooth and reasonably rewarding.

Worth playing, but don't expect to meet your next Game of the Year.

As with most mainstream gaming fans, players seem incapable of providing an opinion between these extremes. Metacritic should just use an "Enjoy" or "Did not enjoy" rating system for user reviews, because people seem to be tragically incapable of providing honest, balanced, sane user reviews.

You'll have morons giving a 0 when they can't launch the game, or a 0 due to one small feature bothering them. That's not a 0 folks. You wait until you can play to review, and in the case of a single feature that irks you, you balance your score around that negative and the positives.

Stop embarrassing yourself and other gamers with these polarized extremes. Destiny isn't a 0, come on! It's certainly a baseline 6 or greater title, by any objective measure of recent game releases.

Look at some of these 0 scores. They come from people who gave 10 to the last Call of Duty and 0 to Grand Theft Auto V, or vice-versa. We're talking about people with chips on their shoulders, personal vendettas, zero perspective, or a chronic disability with communication.

Grow up. Destiny is easily a solid 7 for me, has improved to an 8 via more focused play with people on my Friend list, and it should easily give me my $60 worth over the next few months.

Stay open-minded, gamers. Knee-jerk scoring extremes are just embarassing - or outright lies. Consider some of these Destiny users that give 0 to the PS4 version and 10 to the Xbox One version - or the other way around. Why would you trust these people? People are so accustomed to vomiting opinions on the Internet with little-to-no perspective, fire and forget style, how can we expect to trust a subset of entertainment fans with notoriously small attention spans?

GAMERS, let's do better. Let's expose the dumb and review with proper balance and perspective. Help your fellow gamer instead of airing your dirty laundry with unintelligible emotional hang-ups.

C'mon, guys - make a mental checklist of your actual positives vs. negatives, and mold your score around that. I'm going to keep playing and evaluating, holding at 8/10 with future content additions in mind.

The less than stellar story is one thing, but the horribly repetitive patterns of deploying and guarding ghosts will wear you thin by the end of the game. In fact, given the games development time, I'd say the biggest disappointment is the lack of content readily available right out of the box. This is where Activision continues to insult and manipulate the gaming world via dlc releases, gouging additional money from careless users until the next big thing comes along. It's really sad to see this sort of thing happening with a Bungie title, but unfortunately that's what you will be getting into with Destiny. In terms of social aspects of the game, Destiny bears even more letdown. While Destiny was created to give off a large open world social/MMO vibe, Destiny is hardly social at all beyond the ability to walk up and randomly dance with someone. Unless players are in your fireteam or party, you actually cannot communicate with them at all. This completely contradicts any social affects that Bungie may have been going for, and is just extremely disappointing. All in all, this is NOT a bad game to play, however it falls well short of my personal expectations, especially coming from the group that created Halo. Nothing revolutionary here, just another shooter to eat away a few months of your time. Expand

I could maybe see the appeal of Destiny if you had friends to play with, but if you’re playing solo, it’s not a great experience. The game is gorgeous and the gameplay is solid (if a bit Halo-esque), but it feels like a grind after a couple dozen hours. I felt like I was doing the same thing over and over, but in a different locale. I traded it in before I owned it for a month.

The gameplay is disappointing. I think the majority of the missions are "Defend your moron ghost doing a hacky-thingy on the consoley-thingy while several waves of bullet sponges try to prevent you from doing so!". Even though the missions are repetitive, they really didn't bother me at all. I enjoyed them thoroughly. But sometimes if the mission is different from that, it can be more enjoyable.
The weapons and the PvP are VERY satisfying. The guns are meaty and just overall have a great feel to them. I honestly thought there could have been a larger variety to enemies, considering the massive budget and the huge hype. All there seems to be is fallen thingies and a few unimportant guys that you have to shoot and scoot.

But what makes up for all of those negativites are the AMAZING graphics. This game is VERY pretty. The cutscenes are absolutely BEAUTIFUL and well designed. Even during gameplay, you'll come along a beautiful sight that'll put you in awe. The soundtracks for this game, heard in the "SET DESTINATION" hub are just amazing. Sometimes I would just stop playing and listen to the music play on while I occupy myself. The universe itself is also amazing and very interesting,
There's also a great sense of accomplishment to being awarded some loot, or a rank up.
Those are my thoughts to the game, and PLEASE stop with the 0 spam. This game does not deserve it. Be reasonable and do not be extremely biased with your opinions.

I have to admit i am very disappointed with the story mode or lack there of. For a game that cost so much money to make they could have least focused on story. Instead your told to go to point A to B, kill enemies and retrieve some item. Each "mission" i never really understood why exactly i was doing this. the repetitiveness is something you notice pretty early on.

The game is beautiful and the locations made me want to explore, but with the lack of loot crates or hidden objects, all you find are enemies which made me ponder whether there was any point in exploring these locations at all.
I spend most of my time in the tower than in the open world, which shouldn't be right.

All my fun comes from the multiplayer, playing with friends is highly enjoyable, kills feel rewarding, movement is smooth and the customization of the characters and weapon upgrades is whats currently keeping me playing.

Its not a bad game by any means but it feels like there's just something missing.

Do I think Destiny is a bad game? No its ok, is not really all that bad, controls are outstanding the maps are full of really nice details and look beautiful, compared to other FPS style games this one rates high, but that's not all Destiny claimed to offer players. Destiny claimed to offer players a massive RPG style open world that expended over the planets, if claimed to offer us a game that we could play on for countless hours over a period expanding years, leaving us to explore our imagination and image the prospect of a truly ground breaking in a world we could explore and pick up countless side missions, at least that's what we was lead to believe, so despite been a decent FPS with nice maps, we are all disappointed with the lacking these extra ground breaking elements we where lead to believe Destiny would offer.

To sum it up, I was expecting a much more rewarding RPG style world worth exploring, where I could not only shoot my enemy's, like in any other FPS, but also discover tons of interesting loot, explore and discover more in depth lore, interact with friendly NPC to unlock new missions and sub story lines, like you would get from open world RPG games, this is where Destiny fails, anyone who was drawn into buying the game based on the assumption this is what the game had to offer is naturally going to be very disappointed because this side of the game is a non existent marketing joke that appears only to have been created by hype to sell more copies of the game as it strikes the interest of RPG players who in many cases may have no interest in a new FPS, and those players will be the most let down by this game, because destiny fails offer any of those things, the story when thrown at a RPG player is boring, the looting when thrown at an RPG player is unsatisfying, friendly NPC contact is non existent.

The open world is nothing more than a set number of different maps you have to select to be dropped into making the different planet aspect pointless, I honestly think that Pandora from Borderlands is a far better map of exploration than there entire Destiny universe, and there is this games biggest downfall, its not ground breaking as it claims Borderlands 1 and 2 both already gave us a ground breaking RPG/FPS game and although you could argue Destiny expanded slightly on that gene in some aspects as far as the tree levelling system goes and the inclusion of different combinations of body armour, its hardly anything I would call ground breaking, and thanks to its uninteresting story and lack of rewarding loot, if you class this game as the same category as the Borderlands franchise, then its not even the most enjoyable game in its gene.

I regret that most of the quest are "You're stuck, get rid of all the enemies to get out", side quests are like kill enemies to collect such or such item, you'll also be able to collect items for weapons upgrades but that's about it, so no brainstormer at Bungie. Overall the maps need more life, more NPCs and more varied side quest. It's beautiful but you want to see more.

The Gameplay is no different from any FPS. 3 Classes that unfortunately don't compliment each other (don't expect a Borderlands kind of coop where one char will specialize in healing and another be a tank one). It is unfortunate that right away you can't recognize a different class on the battle field. The rarity system works with colors much like Diablo or Borderlands. Their is weapons/armors upgrades available but only on the ones you're using. The skill three works kind of the same so if you want to upgrade your grenade skills you'll have to use your grenades, in a sens you'll upgrade your char the way you play. The loading time are very slow...

The Tower is where you'll get most of your quests, find merchants and kind of a hub to "meet" other players. Using the option menu you can invite them for a quest, check what they have on them but a chat option would have been nice. I started the first quests pretty much alone but as you keep leveling Destiny will look for available player to join you, so it's rare to be alone on a tough fight.

Overall I'm having fun with that game but to me it is still a Beta. So much emptiness in a lot of area, no faction to join, it's great in many aspects and frustrating in many others. Of course you'll get DLCs but the vanilla version lacks a lot of content and ideas to be the amazing game Bungie promised us.

P.S. What the heck with international Video game reviewer taking so long to put online their review, specially after Bungie warning everybody the day before that it would not be fare to make a first day review ? What does it differ from Diablo, FF, WoW and so on ? How much did you gave to everybody Bungie ? LOL

Let me get my biggest criticism out of the way first. Destiny's story is laughably bad. It is honestly one of the worst I've experienced in gaming, which is exacerbated by the voice acting, which feels phoned in and the actors, particularly Peter Dinklage, sound bored and disinterested. There is very rarely a reason for what you are doing that makes sense to the average player. Does this condemn the game to oblivion? Surprisingly, no. Destiny ticks all the boxes for me to hate it but has at its core meaty shooting mechanics, fun character customization, and exploration. The open world may not be as large as Borderlands but it is still quite fun to explore. The game also includes a PvP mode, which is a bit hit or miss. Gun and armor stats are normalized so that the level 5 has a chance of taking down the level 20. This works well. What doesn't work well is the level design. Firebase Delphi is excellent, but all the other maps either feel slightly too small or too big. The only reason I play PvP is to play with more than 3 players, the limit for fireteams in most PvE game modes. Shooting and looting is great fun. The game has the perfect balance of loot, making you work to find the good stuff. Some of the missions are repetitive but they change up the enemy types enough to keep it from becoming stale. All in all, Destiny is a fun, but flawed game. If you are giving it a 10 or a 1 solely based on your pathetic flame war, shame on you. Ignore hype from now on and learn to accept games for what they are. Expand

Destiny is a new type game. It is not right to call it an MMO or an FPS and comparing it in this way is wrong. From my play with it so far (just coming up to level 15) it feels like an FPS with extra widgets and applications added that draw inspiration from MMO style games. I also don't think you will find this much content available in the vast majority of FPS titles.

Personally, I think its a fantastic achievement, but lets go into more detail.

    Presentation
Nobody can claim that this isn't a beautiful game. The polish, from the environments to the finer details on the armour is magnificent and a sight to behold. There are some minor issues (different armour/weapons can bug on cutscenes) but otherwise the visuals are stunning

    Gameplay
This is where Destiny shines. It was to be expected from Bungie but every element of the gameplay is slick and engrossing. The controls are logical, animations are smooth and you feel in control of everything you do (getting on your vehicle is smooth as butter). There is a good variety of weapons (for an FPS game) and grenades/supercharge powers add tactical elements to combat. While there isn't anything new to the formula here, everything works perfectly and playing through Destiny has never felt like a chore.

    Story
Not the strongest point of Destiny. The story is pretty generic but interesting enough to keep you involved. It is let down ultimately by stale story missions, where they do become a bit repetitive after a while. It was also an odd choice to put so much of the story in "Grimoire cards" making them less accessible.

    Raids/Strikes/Exploring
On top of the 15 hour or so campaign there is also exploring the planet. This is interesting to an extent (high level bosses, loot) but it is mostly the same areas as the story mission. Raids and Strikes however are extremely fun. 3-6 teams must beat large hordes of enemies and difficult boss battle. Are they bullet sponges? Yes, but the difficulty is high enough to make it engaging and interesting.

    Difficulty
I think this is often overlooked when looking at this game. I have never felt overly comfortable at any point while playing the game. And I have died a lot during the strike/raid missions. This keeps it exciting and keeps you on your toes throughout playing the game

    Multiplayer
There are two parts to this. Firstly, you can play in fireteams doing any mission in the game, during any raid or just exploring. Destiny is immensely fun with a friend. Better still, if you have a higher level friend join, the enemies are made that bit tougher so not to overwhelm you but not to make it too easy for your friend

Secondly, the PvP. The crucible is a bit bare bones at the moment, and there are some balancing issues. Thus it is fun. So so fun. Because all the gameplay mechanics are so highly polished you can jump right in and have a ball. Does need to be fleshed out a bit more though.

    Other
    -The voice acting isn't perfect
-In my opinion, there is no Grind. Grinding implies effort and boredom. I have not felt this while playing this game
    -Overhyped

    Verdict
This is only the beginning of the Destiny journey. There is already a massive amount to do in the game, not to mention endless PvP and, if you don't focus too much on the few minor issues, you can have an incredible amount of fun. Ludicrous amounts of fun. And, ultimately, isn't that what we play video games for?

There are lots of people complaining out there after spending 100s of hours playing it. Think about it, if its that bad why have they played it for 100s of hours? And then they complain about having to spend a measly $20 every few months to play for hundreds of more hours. It is actually great value for money, and I will certainly be buying every expansion that comes out.

Overall, it sucks. Here is why. The voice chat is extremely limited. I did not find this out until tonight. I thought voice chat in multiplayer was a given. It isn't multiplayer without communication. I feel like I'm playing with bots and no story. What good does it do to explore worlds if you can't talk to anybody?

Settings on the guns are not revisable if there is only one enhancement option. The enemies all follow the same fighting pattern and cease their chase if you back off far enough. The story follows this pattern where your ghost unlocks stuff and you wait around and knock off a few bad guys. Maybe next time they will get it right. CONS
    - Can get quite lonely and boring if you play alone
    - Not enough PVP or Strike maps
    - Story does not have a lot of dialogue
    - Voice acting quite poor

Destiny is a game which is has quite a few elements to it. There are raids, strikes, open world
exploration, story mode and also PVP. What I can say is that this game does not do any of these elements brilliant however, it does seem to do it all very good.

The story first of all is quite fun however the voice acting is poor and there is not a lot of dialogue. The fact that you can play the story mode with 2 other friends is also a bonus as this makes the experience a lot more fun.

I am finding the strikes so far very good and there is also different level strikes which offers better loot the harder you go. This gives you sence of progression and reward which entices you to play more of them.
I can say the game appears to be quite harder as well than playing the beta version which makes the battles more interesting.

Bungie said that this game really starts at level 20 and I can see where they are coming from. You feel more rewarded and more progression when hitting level 20 and trying to get more gear.

I have not had a lot of experience with the PVP yet only an hour however I have found it fun to play especially with friends. Some people say that PVP is quite repetitive as there are not a lot of maps and no filters to take out the maps you dont want but the game modes do seem fun not a lot of difference to Halo or Call of Duty.
In some ways i do think it is quite limited at the moment on content (i.e strike/pvp maps) however, I do feel that the game will only get better as time goes on and I am very interested to see what the expansions give us.

All in all there is quite a few things bungie can do to improve this game which I do believe will happen over time the game though is very fun to play with friends and i would reccommend to people who enjoy Halo and Borderlands.

I dont know why people are giving such low scores for this game especially for the fact of no offline single player mode. Everyone knew deep down this was going to be online only and bungie nor activision hinted about offline play. This game is fun to play and I am really enjoying my time in the game.

It's a fun, entertaining experience with enough content to keep you interested for a long amount of time. Those looking for the next big change in gaming history like some people were honestly expecting should look elsewhere.
In Destiny, you're basically a "Guardian" that's tasked with defending the world against the enemies of the "Traveller," a planet that arrived and bought prosperity to the human race or something like that. The darkness arrived and basically destroyed everything, and you are there with your trusty Ghost to save what's left. The story is quite underwhelming and poorly explained. Other than Peter Dinklage's good voice acting telling you "See this place? It used to be awesome...shame..." you really get little explanation as to what happened and why you should care.
The overall presentation is good, with shiny visuals and great music. There aren't that many locations at launch, but each location is full of stuff to do. There's a good attention to detail here, and it feels like a very polished experience.
The gameplay is loot-driven as you constantly get new weapons and gear and swap out to see which ones you like. Enemies level up as you do and you'll need to use your abilities to survive. The game is challenging at points, but the gunplay is smooth and the enemies are varied in different locations. Upgrading my character with new gear and abilities was very engaging, particularly when the character creation made me able to create a pretty accurate (but more badass) version of myself. The overall game makes you feel like a badass when you're playing it, so if you want that then this is for you.
The online multiplayer is descent enough, though nothing that interesting in my opinion. It's from the creators of Halo so if that's what you'll like then that's what you'll get. The idea of weapons you've found from your adventures being used in PvP sounds good, but it makes it really unbalanced at points. It's not bad as I'm having a lot of fun with it, it's just not that amazing or revolutionary.
Being only 30FPS, it's a surprisingly smooth, game, and the controls are descent and make sense. I have yet to run into any glitches either and, whenever I die, I feel it's because of me and not because I feel cheated by the game. You know that feeling. Even in multiplayer, it passes the blame more onto that guy with the OP weapon way better than mine than the game itself.
Like I had said, though, the game is very fun and above all else that is what should matter. It plays well, it has enough content to last a while from launch and the customisation is in-depth and engaging. I've been having great fun playing the game and can't wait to play more. If fun is what you're looking for, then this is the game for you. If you're looking for "more than a game" or all these other BS taglines that have been associated with this product then you will be disappointed. It's a fun and engaging game, no more and no less.

In no way is this the game changer we hoped it would be but it still is a fun game. Game-play wise it's almost perfect each class has different edge to it so no one class is overpowered or the clear victor, it all depends on how you play. Playing with friends or playing against them is also really fun the PVP and strikes are fun to do with a group of friends or strangers it probably has one of the better examples of team dynamics of most games. From the games I've played I've never seen someone "carry" the team to victory. So in terms of mechanics and visuals it's solid. Now for story is were it falls flat. First off I never found the missions to be complete repeats of each other each one had a different reason in terms of story. Now some objectives were repeated at times like protect this or destroy this but if we fault this game for it then no game is innocent of this "crime". The lore has tons of potential to be a great story but it is poorly executed. While each of the enemy races were unique it terms of classes the lore behind them is never fully explained. Destiny is an example of quantity over quality each of the races are interesting to look at and appear to have interesting lore behind it but it's never fully realized. Why do the Hive and Fallen hate each other if they are both minions of the dark? How does the Cabal fit into any of this? Well we never get an answer Bungie went for a story line of throwing the player in the middle of the action to figure out what happened in the past to protect the future. A simple story-line that they used with Halo but they never bother to accurately explain the past. All we know is there's this thing called the Traveler and it's good but then there is this thing called the Darkness that wants to destroy the Traveler for reasons and in the end humanity got beat by the darkness leaving only one city, that's all we really get. Another thing that is done rather poorly is the execution of post max level once you beat the campaign and reach lvl 20 you have really two options. PVP or repeating strikes for the vanguard to get awesome armor while that might be fun for a time it does were down. Overall though this is very strange game to review because we know more stuff is coming. We know that more DLC is coming that will open up more locations and story missions that will hopefully better explain the lore. So I guess this is a vanilla review of the game that will absolutely change over time. In the end if you have friends and want just a fun game to play with and are willing to wait for change to come then absolutely pick it up but if you wait for more stuff to role in then your not missing much right now. I hope in the future Destiny becomes the game we hoped it would be. Expand

Well the way i see it, every time i log in i never know where to go and what to do, there's too much choice, i mean, do i do PVP Crucible? Shall i do strikes? Shall i just go farming? How about the story missions?? just don't know... i'm lvl 24 and haven't even finished the story mode yet... I get the style/format of the game is literally shoot everything in sight, but isn't that awesome FUN if the engine for it and the programming is spot on and rewarding? Isn't that pretty much what you're meant to do if you play CoD, Halo, BF and pretty much every other FPS shooter out there that is good?

On top of all you already get with the game, graphics are incredible, there's like 5 or 6 or 7 different alien races spread across Earth/Moon/Venus/Mars which are huge maps with caves/ships/buildings etc etc that you can explore for endless hours and with constant baddies to kill, looting chests to open and materials to find and farm... An insane amount of guns/armour/ships/ and other pointless customisable options like symbols and capes/bonds etc... A pretty solid levelling/upgrade system which is quite rewarding and interesting, 3x different character classes all customisable and each with their own special abilities... My god the list is endless... Bungie have also been loading daily challenges, weekly challenges, Raids, Bounties to complete (and get XP and Loot) and there's a lot more to come as well... It is UTTERLY INSANE for people to be saying there is no content and it's "too repetitive"... Even after all this, i still can't help but feel the whole thing is still just a huge platform with incredible expansion potential...

IMHO, people just do not understand the game and its concept... It's been 10 days since it's been out and it seemed no one gave it a chance and were too quick to judge... Again, the way i see it, you need to spend 15 to 25 hrs playing it to even start getting and understanding the game, problem is, i saw 0 score reviews 1 day after the game was out, that is ridiculous...

For me, this is probably the best game i've ever played... Actually... IT IS the best game i've ever played and will be playing it for a long time... It's getting more and more interesting and challenging as i've progressed...

I truly don't get why there's so much negativity and criticism towards this game, it's all just a bit strange to me...

    10/10 = Amazing Game!
    Congrats Bungie/Activision

Destiny is pretty fun, addictive with an excellent presentation and epic soundtrack. That's all about it. The lore, story (barely 5-10 story dialogues in the whole game) and character development are insignificant if not non-existent.

Ok, now that is out of the way let's put the awful story aside. This game plays like a dream and looks wonderful. The mechanics allow you to move as you would like to and it is truly satisfying, a feeling not felt as much since Half Life 2. I like the guns, I like the little extra powers, I like all of this side of the game.

All that said why oh why Bungie did you create an absolute wonder of a playable game that is made almost unplayable by what ever the f**k story you could come up with..... Was that really the best you could do?!

All this can be sorted with a few nice DLC packs but seriously, but if they decided to spend the money developing such a game then why oh why was it ALL not right from the start.

Play the game, enjoy the game, but don't be blown away by the game.

Well, as a FPS game I think this is above average, but I am seeing a lot o negative reviews for this game, and the reason for that IMO is that with al the HYPE the developers were able to raise for this game, the public clearly were waiting for a game that would be someting like a crossover between World of Warcraft and Starcraft maybe. Unfortunately, it is neither thing.

The core game presents the open world freshness while keeping on the path for gamers that prefer not heading down the rabbit hole. Its a bit of a grind, and as it should be. As a veteran of mmo I enjoy thinking tactically for a boss battle that can last up to 40 minutes.

Its a great game marred by dumb technical issues, that were supposed to be ironed out within the 5 year development. LAN just doesn't work the same as Canada vs. Brazil same timezone connections.

Destiny had the potential to be great, it fell way short unfortunately.
All the classes feel very similar to each other. Have a grenade, melee power, double jump of some sort and the ultimate.
The biggest drawback is the insane amount of grinding to get any of the good gear. Not only is it basically a grind feast but it is also a boring one. Every mission and strike blend together

I'm not one to invest too much time into a video game. In fact, for first person shooters I usually prepare experiences shorter than ten hours.

From the time of this review, I've spend an entire month at about 15 hours per week playing it. It's an addictive experience. Yet, the most appealing part of Destiny of what it could be in just a year or less. The lore of this new sci-fi world is appealing, yet somewhat lacking in storytelling, but it doesn't stop me from daydreaming what one day this game could be. In fact, let's forget that even WoW was not what it is now when it first released.

So keep it short and simple, do you need to buy Destiny? Well, if you din't purchased it when it was released a month ago then no. You don't need Destiny, in fact you can just wait it out. Wait a year or so until Destiny is a bigger and better game.

So here's hoping Bungie takes Destiny's sales with a grain a salt, as much work is needed to truly bring this ambitious project to what it can be.

Such implementations are almost impossible to reverse. Instead, what we have is a fun, solid shooter, with no flaws which simply carries an air of not being quite there yet.

People are upset because they don't know what's about to happen. Perhaps Bungie should be doing a better job of keeping its players in the loop. Not everyone is willing to grind out reputation or varying different components and currencies for different factions for seemingly no reason! And more guns! Players like content, and in a shooter, guns are surely the best kind. There are too few uncommons and rares, and no excuses for it.

Graphically the game is unreal and the framerate at least on the PS4 is smooth and rarely hiccups. The gameplay itself is an awesome blend of Halo and Borderlands, the exploration, story and strike modes are awesome, and the multiplayer aspect here is great, with other players wandering in and out of your adventures, but due to the way the game is designed, the only way other players can effect your game is positively, they can't attack you or steal items from you, only help you wipe out a particularly rough enemy or lead the way to a new area originally unknown to you. If you want to smash other players heads in of course there's always the crucible, which is the player vs player multiplayer aspect and has all the traditional fixins from deathmatch to capture the flag and control. The story is in depth and interesting, and has the occasional out of left field gameplay (the sword of crota mission is unreal).

There are more than enough things to do in the game that it is a solid investment, and whether you want to be social or play like a lone wolf, you can do both seamlessly (though the strikes and raids will auto match you up with other players because alone they're legitimately almost impossible). The game, however, needs to be constantly online, so whether you want to play alone or with friends, it works in a similiar vein as world of warcraft, where the world is shared with everyone.

All in all the game scores a perfect 10 out of me, the only gripe I have is Peter Dinklage not being a very good voice over artist. If you buy one more game all year, please make it this one. Hope I see you online.

A first person shooter, open world RPG with MMO elements. While they are all present in the game, they may not be as in depth as they first appeared.

Destiny is a great shooter. Its mechanics are tight, fast, and completely sound. But the gun depth isn't there. While there are many guns, they are all just variants of a few base models. Other than that, they change color and damage stats. What initially looks like a deep customizable gun-play experience, ends up being a mediocre one.

We also get RPG elements. There are three classes, each with a sub class. But you quickly learn that to earn your abilities, you just go through the paces. There are no real consequences or perks to choosing one ability over the other. The loot system is awesome as always. You get guns and armor fairly often. More times than not having better stats than the ones equipped. The game gives you just enough.

Then you have your MMO like elements. The Tower would be the starting point, it is your central hub for pretty much everything. You can go to different vendors that sell certain things. Look at mail, interact with many other people, and have access to your safe. It's all very similar to an MMO. Then you have missions of the day/week, strike missions, and random events that start up. The thing most fun are the random events, but they are to far apart and happen very rarely. Bungie will be adding raids to the mix, which should be fun.

Those were very light summaries of the full experience along with my thoughts. Destiny is in not way an excellent game. It barely qualifies as great. But you can't help to be immersed in the game. The story is really non-existent, which is very disappointing, when it was presented as a huge part of the game. It's multiplayer is fun, but has not showed anything to make me want to keep playing. But it's Destiny's core gameplay that keeps me interested. What starts as an hour playthrough, it ends up being four hours. I just need that next upgrade for my armor, or get that better gun. You can truly lose yourself in this game and it's a shame that some people are going to miss out because they don't want to except a great game. They would rather be the cool person and claim Destiny is overhyped and doesn't deliver. GET OVER YOURSELF. Bungie never promised anything that's not in the full game or is coming to the full game.

As a new IP though, Destiny needs to really make itself stand out and I'm not sure if it does just yet. I could definitely see people getting bored after a month or so, and the servers going stale similar to what happened with Titanfall. The game would have definitely been a 9 in my book had there been more of a story as well, as the game pretty much feels like halo (3 factions, one that is far more "sentient" and the other that is comparable to the flood in Halo) with even less story.

TL;DR - It's an ok game that was definitely over-hyped, doesn't do anything better than similar games like Borderlands, and only time will tell if it can really keep everyone's attention for more than a few weeks, let alone spawn a franchise.

Even a biscuit can be delicious. Destiny does nothing to particularly stand out. It's not a wonderous amalgam of gourmet game design, presenting you with one of the most curious design decisions since Vaas of Farcy 3.

What is there, is done well. Compared to the Borderlands series, it does away with all the garbage toys, offering you a functional palette of destructive weapons. It offers more variety and growth than more static shooters. It's MMO-ey, but gone is the need to have 40 "friends" whos friendship hinges purely on schedules befitting an employer. Two friends are good enough for an adventure, and yourself-plus-five will be enough for a story to tell. PVP is easy to get into as any Halo match, with significantly more variation in the tools at your disposal to seek your win. Every class is the same at the core, sharing weapon availability, but with their special abilities defining the features of their special attacks, grenades, and melee strikes.

Yet, the major controversy is that the drama, the story, the "epic" falls somewhere in two camps. On one side, it all falls flat, a bizarre failure to try to make a beautiful world engaging (besides things that shoot at you). Yet on the other, the same absence of personality and drama adds to the desolation and desperation of what amounts to being in the soon-to-be-last-moments of humanity seem oddly engineered to be that way. Whether this is a failure or an unintentional success, I still cannot decide. NPC's are incorrigibly depressive, even in the face of good news. Landscapes are vast, interesting stretches of desolation depicting just how close to the precipice you truly stand. That hollowness isn't something you simply 'fail' your way into.

Yet this only makes the game yours to make in an endearing sort of way if you're looking for a shooter-RPG to dig in. It's fun to play. While not offering anything truly unique, this biscuit is worth a bite.

Also people seem to forget that this is an mmo and will grow over time. We still have the Iron Banner, the raids and all the other special events that Bungie has promised to open up and I can't wait to continue to gear up my character in preparation for the Iron Banner.

The customization and loot are awesome. This game is best described as a cross between borderlands and halo. This game is a loot grinder for guns and equipment its not a bro dude fps like COD, BF or Halo.

Also all the game isnt open yet Raids wont be open til the 16th of this month, with strikes, raids and the story mission plus collecting golden chests and ghost fragments to legendary equipment and ships there is plenty to do not including the expansions coming the first of which will be Dec.

This is really a great game. There are far too many people giving this game a 0 which is so disingenuous. 0 means it couldn't be worse. Hardly the case with this game. A lot of the negative reviews are based off of people having misconceptions about what this game is "supposed to be." Let me say right now what Bungie has been saying all along this is neither Halo nor an MMORPG. This game is also not Borderlands. If you bought this game or are planning on buying this game because you think it is one of these things then you are mistaken.

This game is what Bungie is calling a "shared world shooter." It is a FPS first and foremost with a combat system that is similar to Halo. By similar I mean the feel of the combat is comparable to Halo as far as combat flow, weapon mechanics, physics, etc. However, it still feels unique particularly with the super abilities.

As far as the "Shared World" portion of the game there is not open world chat system, it is all squad based. Bungie did this deliberately so that the Tower and other social areas didn't turn into troll central. Honestly, it's better that way so we don't have to deal with racists and spammers in the common areas. It is entirely up to you if and when you want to team up with other players and engage in the social aspect of the game.

The loot is cool and unique and it doesn't spam you with loot like in Borderlands and Diablo. I prefer this system honestly since you will be leveling up your individual gear.

The world is open world in the same way that Borderland is open world not in the way Skyrim is open world.

Overall, if you appreciate this game for what it is rather than trying to turn it into something it is not and was never intended to be, i.e. Halo or WoW, then you will have a great time. One of the best games I have played in a long long time.

I originally rated this game a 10. I was sorely mistaken! I'd give it a 0 after playing through the same PvE missions over and over and over. The game obviously lacks content and DLC was planned far too early into the design. I'll play the DLC that I preordered... but I will definitely NOT GIVE BUNGIE ANOTHER PENNY!

Great game. Can not believe people are giving it less that 6/10.. even if you don't like the lack or story, the multiplayer aspect of the game is definitely up there with the best (Halo, COD..). I think all the hype has made people extra critical.

The most common complaint I see is "boring, grind-fest, you do the same thing over and over." What were you people expecting? Mini-games? Every FPS on the market is repetitive, almost every single game is repetitive. Mechanics are in place, settings that allow you to play the game with those mechanics are in place. You don't play the same level over and over; the levels take place on planets which are each one giant map. You can play the story/strike missions, where you are led through certain areas of the map and certain enemies will be present, or, you can play the free-roam map where you can explore the whole planet while doing side missions.

The multiplayer aspect of this game is perfectly integrated. So, here's something people thought was going to happen; "You arrive on Planet A and everyone who is playing Destiny on Planet A is there with you." This wouldn't work with an MMOFPS; yeah idiots, it isn't an MMORPG because an FPS can never be an RPG! The population is split into separate servers for each instance so there aren't more players than there are enemies!

Destiny is a great game. It is a fun FPS, with plenty of RPG elements, set in a MMO environment. Before I hit level five I was in a party with two other people (strangers) doing missions together, coordinating against the mobs with voice chat. But, the trolls said that the game is easy, right? Well, games have this thing called "difficulty" where you can choose normal or hard, so by playing some missions on hard, we needed to be on the same page and we were! Wow.

It's so strange when so many people 'claim' to have experienced a game that is completely separate from the one I'm experiencing...the one that the people I've played with are experiencing. There are so many people on the internet who seem compelled to unleash their self-loathing, tortured souls onto the accomplishments of others. The same is true here, the press will give people out there a real look at the successes and flaws of Destiny; and I predict the average score will be in the high 8 to low 9 out of 10 range.

The people who reviewed the game and gave it such low scores couldn't have even gotten 1/4 of the way through the content. (Yeah, level cap is 20; but there are multiple end game raids that will take a long time for people to finish). My score is based on the content I've seen, (up to level 10) combined with my evaluation of the systems in place. Borderlands meets Halo in a persistent world (style of gameplay). Graphics are very good (For a PS4 game). The multiplayer component is easy to use and is very important when completing the end-game content or any content, because cooperative and competitive MP is fun... (Really people, did you expect Bungie to create a virtual-world FPS for you to waste your real life on? ITS A GOOD GAME, so go play a different 'repetitive grindfest' if you don't like it.)

P.S. I am mostly a PC gamer, and I haven't played a Bungie game since Halo 2; so I'm not a fanboy or anything like that. This is my actual opinion of the game, which I'm guessing over 200 people (at the time I'm writing this) can't honestly say.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
