Destiny misses the mark on so many levels aside from mechanics of overall gameplay. The combat is there. Bungie is known for that and they execute it well. There is ZERO progression and zero reward for playing PVP. One stat "light" is supposed to hold me as I grind match after match with loot drops being totally random and not dictated according to skill? What is my incentive for trying in any match? I'd rather just stand there, and be carried and hope something good drops. I have played for a solid week with ZERO progression of my character. Loot drops for me sure, but it is not as good as what I already acquired A MONTH ago. This game reeks of publisher medaling. Thankfully, this game has a 35.00 trade in value at Gamestop. And let's face it... who is going to be playing this when Call of Duty Advanced Warfare and Halo MC drops?

If anything... Destiny 2... if there is one... should learn heavily from these mistakes. This is the last time I will ever be burned by a game that was really, if you think about it, entirely sold on hype. Nobody on my friends list.. of about 200 people... is playing this game. Most have gone back to BF & Ghosts. So far.. 1 year into this generation.. I am not impressed with what has been presented to the community.

The story is vapid at best. The strikes are all the same "Go here and kill this guy" formula. The story missions are just as repetitive. Missions on patrol are bland. If you love RPGs because of the immersion you get from the rich story telling and the lore, you will not get that here. Anybody who claims this is flat out lying to you. This game has virtually no immersion at all. It is a dressed up shooter with some RPG elements. I really hope this is resolved with future content.
The most disappointing thing about this game is its unrealized potential. They should have ditched the Grimoire and put those resources into writing a decent story. Everything is in place for this to be a great game, but as it sits, this game is just a good game.

Ugh, this game was a gross disappointment with an embarrassing lack of content... That being said I can't rate it too low, because I did spend weeks obsessively getting better gear to get my hunter to level 29, so, in pure hours played, I suppose I got sixty bucks worth? It just should have been more fun.

Over-hyped. I've played way more the 20 hours...The feel of the guns are spot on, just nothing new about them and little to choose from. The game has its share of server glitches. Bungie continues to tweak guns for pvp, often overdoing it. The reward system is a tad daft. You can't play the character you choose and expect to max out your level with skill. It's luck. The game gave me gear for classes I was not playing and so my chosen class remains at 29 and the secondary characters have gear that will level to 30. I added these characters simply to make use of the gear that dropped for them.

People with more skill and more hours than I have get barely any good drops and are also thwarted from leveling up.

While the dlc is held out as more content is coming, it is hard to see how a few more maps and a raid are going to patch up the non existent story and barren gameplay environments.

And sound. How is it that huge monsters can stomp up behind you and not be heard?

Destiny is a hugely ambitious game and with that it is also hugely flawed. Though going through story missions and raids with a team of friends provides a bit of entertainment, the loot system bogs it down heavily, making playing Destiny past level 20 a maddening chore.

Unfortunately this is simply a mess. The mechanics are solid and it looks beautiful, but that's it. The story is very weak, with plenty of holes, and utilizes Dinklage as an exposition bot. Leveling up in RPG's happens within the worlds, however, the world of Halo.. I mean Destiny... is so quickly conquered you are left wondering how to keep leveling up. Well, here's the level up formula in this game:

    LVL 30 = [10 (20 Missions at average of .5hr) x 100 (playthroughs)] + [50 (hours) x 6 (match types)] + [Random Loot avg 30hrs] = 1330 hours or 55ish days

Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but you get the point. A game can not be build solely on repetition.

The game becomes a loot hunt after only 10 hrs in worlds this small, then what you have on your hands is a terrible MMO hybrid that isn't worth your time.

It's a pretty large issue, but I see a lot for this game in the future. The actual game-play itself is some of the best I've played in it's genre. The PvP can be a little spastic and the super's can get annoying to fight against sometimes. But overall, everything plays very well. The PvE and RPG aspects of the game are what bring it down a bit. Boss's have entirely too much health, and there is hardly enough variety during the battle to make it interesting. And the fact that doing strikes is the most efficient way to acquire new gear is a little disappointing. But I'm still playing. And that's what solid game-play mechanics will do to players. The game in it's current state is unfinished, due to Activision's role. But I appreciate the way they are releasing content. It adds a new layer to immersion. If they gave you everything they had to offer at release, you'd play through it in a week or two and be done. That's not how events happen in the real world. It take's months, even years for wars to develop and end, not weeks. So by releasing certain content throughout the year, it adds an almost realistic approach to how the players will encounter the story. Destiny is an amazing FPS and an average RPG, for now. When the rest of the content is released, I believe that Destiny will finally live up to the hype it built.

Their are guns that are simple over powered and they are starting weapons which leaves players with the response "if you can't beat them join them".
The diversity in the weapons is great but again, it leaves the lower levels at a big disadvantage not being able to wield the high level weapons. If that is not enough for you, the perks; higher level players have, can leave low levels at the player mercy. Their is no skill base ranking system that you would expect from a Bungie game, which after 343's attempt at Halo 4, you would almost certainly expect their to be one.

Graphically, Destiny provides some of the best artwork in a game set in a new sci-fi world I've seen. Vistas on the different planets of our solar system are wonderfully and beautifully created, and leads one to want to view them rather than actually play the game itself. The story that players wander through, as there really is no overall story arc that is particularly compelling nor provides adequate reasoning for what is happening throughout it, is lackluster at best, and seems to have been completely ignored as nothing more than a tag-on rather than a main sell for the game.

Where Destiny really shines is its combat gameplay mechanics, with the combat feeling fluid and, for lack of a better word, right. Player vs. Player is one of the more compelling reasons to play this game, with the combat feeling more balanced than one would expect. While there are certainly advantages to players with exotic gear fighting lower levels, it is not in such a way that there is no point to joining in on it. As well as that, the various classes are interesting, if somewhat too similar to one another.

However, beyond this, the overall game itself reminds me of a massively-multiplayer game in regards to all of the bad things that come with them, with little of the benefits. Load times are frequent and long, maps are notoriously small for what they were perpetuated as being, and the Strikes and Missions offer little enjoyment after the initial run. Too much grind for too little gain is the best way to put it. Truly, the only thing that kept me coming back was the PvP, which too has lost its luster.

Overall, Destiny isn't a bad game, but it is nowhere near being a good game either. Rather, it's average, with some moments of brilliance, and other, far more, moments of poorly thought out choices and gameplay decisions.

To start off, both Destiny's sound and visuals are excellent. The soundtrack is brilliantly put together, and is backed up by spectacular scenery - most notably on the moon. Animations and effects are well done. Glitches are infrequent at worst in normal game-play, and the game definitely doesn't suffer despite the lack of 60 frames per second (as it shouldn't).

The core game mechanics are solid. Movement is smooth and fluid while shooting is well refined and satisfying. Both aspects do of course have similarities to Halo, but that isn't at all a bad thing.

However, beyond the basics, Destiny does have numerous issues. Firstly, there's no reason that a game of its genre should have a ground breaking story-line. The truth is that the majority of the target audience don't want it. But that still doesn’t excuse the half-baked attempt at a story that Destiny gives us.

Barely anything is explained. What happened to the traveller? Why are all of the guardians dead at the start? The game sets itself up to explain its background, but never does. The whole story in the end feels pointless; as though nothing has really been achieved. There’s not nearly enough time to learn about the characters let alone care about them. In-depth character development isn’t necessary, but there needs to be at least a little to make the story worthwhile. Destiny has near to none.

Bungie may claim that this is merely the first chapter. Destiny has numerous expansions to come, so while you might not feel any sense of achievement yet, you will. The problem with that is that this was a full price release. To package such a lacklustre, unfulfilling story into a full price release is criminal. Without paying for Xbox Live/Playstation Plus, the campaign is all you get, and it definitely isn’t worth the price on its own.

Sure, the Grimoire cards on Bungie’s website explain everything you want to know about Destiny’s universe, but why should you need to visit a website? Needing to leave the game to get a full experience is poor design, full stop. Destiny began with the ambition of immersing the player in a rich new world, drawing fantasy together with FPS to create something fresh. Instead, you’re left wondering what your purpose in this new world is. You’re left wondering who all of these random and mismatched alien races are. Why did they come to Earth? Why did they attack humanity? What happened to leave Earth in ruin? None of it is properly explained.

Even beyond the campaign, the lack of content is constantly apparent. While every area is beautiful, the fact is there are only four (excluding The Tower). To add to this, the game barely encourages exploration, and so there’s very little point or enjoyment in it. At later levels, you’ll find yourself killing the same few dozen enemies time and time again. You’ll be repeating the same few dungeons (called strikes) over and over hoping for a chance of good loot. The enemies soon become boring to fight, as well. They lack variety, and bullet-sponge bosses are infuriating. You could take on the raid for a more advanced challenge, but you’ll need five friends with Destiny to be online with you to be able to access what is without doubt the best developed content in the game. Destiny’s promise was that it would have a lifetime of ten years, but sadly many people will be bored within ten hours.

Levelling in Destiny also comes with problems. To advance past level 20 you’ll need to collect armour pieces with the ‘light’ stat, but the loot system is punishing. After level 20, all loot is completely random. You collect ‘engrams’ in the world which you then decrypt to receive an item. Engrams have different tiers (rare and legendary) but beyond that you get a completely random piece of loot. Even better, if you decrypt a legendary engram you have a chance of getting an armour piece for another class which you can’t even use. As a result, levelling beyond 20 is based almost entirely on time and luck, not skill. That’s an issue.

Moving away from the co-operative aspects of the game, PvP is good. The difference in gear between new players and high level players isn’t ideal, but is easily tolerable. You can also use PvP to get loot, but again it’s random, so don’t expect a 5.0 K/D will earn you a legendary engram.

All in all, Destiny has solid foundations, but the rest needs some work. It is by no means a bad game. It has been put together with more care and attention than most releases of the past few years. However, it isn’t revolutionary, and at times it struggles to simply be enjoyable. What’s sad is that it had the potential to be great. The ideas were there, but the execution missed the mark this time. Perhaps, in time, Bungie will fulfil their promises, but that time could be some way away.

The multiplayer is good but it has cheap one shoot kill weapons that can piss you off to no end, and I personally dont like the multiplayer because if i want to play a game where i shoot people and laugh how they die then I would play Call of Duty . I expected more from this game but its a big disappointment and I feel like it is a scam. If you want to sell DLC later on for this game... great, but at least give us a COMPLETE version of the game on the release, ($65 is a lot of money for this incomplete game)
The reason why im giving 4 out of 10 is the fact that this game has amazing graphics and soundtracks but bessides those everything looks cheap and lazy from a big video game industry like Bungie.

Destiny is a very polarizing game. You'll either love it or absolutely hate it.

The technical side of it is pretty much flawless. Beautiful environments, great music, and some of the best controls I've ever seen. Exactly what you'd expect from the creative minds behind the Halo series. What really hurt Destiny was Activision's greed. In order to make more money, Bungie was forced to

What really hurt Destiny was Activision's greed. In order to make more money, Bungie was forced to gut the game and remove a significant amount of content to be sold as future DLC. What's left logically feels incomplete. The story barely makes sense, and many plot points are never resolved. Every single character is shallow and underdeveloped. What's their story? What is their goal? The game never tells you.But it's okay, pay $50 more and you may get a continuation of the story in the latest 'Taken King' DLC. I'm sure you'll love it, especially if you're like me and you already spent over $100 on the base game (I pre-ordered the Guardian Edition, which came with the first two DLCs for "free").

There's plenty of missions, but they're all very repetitive and boring. Collect a certain number of items, kill some enemies, protect your little A.I. companion... and that's about it, really. If you ever hope to get any better gear, you'll be repeating these missions over and over and over again until you're absolutely sick of them. The endless grind doesn't feel rewarding or even remotely fun - and this is coming from a person who's spent the past 10 years playing World of Warcraft.

As far as multiplayer goes, you can do the boring missions in a group of three players. But really, why would you even bother? There are also drop-in/drop-out public events. You're in the middle of one of your boring missions when suddenly a massive tank appears from the sky, and you and any other player nearby need to work together to destroy it.

Then there are 3-player strikes (it's like WoW's dungeons), and these are actually quite fun. There's a handy player finder tool, so if none of your friends play Destiny, the game will hook you up with two more players. Some of them are pretty bad, though, and more than once did I have a player tagging along doing nothing or simply sitting in a corner, while the remaining two of us did all the hard work. You can report these slackers, but there seems to be no penalty for this behavior whatsoever.

Destiny also has raids, which are basically strikes with larger fireteams and tougher enemies. Unfortunately, there is no player finder for these. You are forced to go to various websites and find your raid team there. It's inconvenient, and the number one reason why I've never done any raids. They're supposed to be fun, but I'll never know unless Bungie adds a player finder.

PvP was Destiny's biggest selling point, and it seems to be the focus of its developers, seeing how pretty much every single event they've introduced since launch was all about PvP (the only exception was The Queen's Wrath). If you're like me and prefer PvE over PvP, you'll find this rather disappointing. If you love PvP, add 2 more points to my rating. Bungie is constantly tweaking weapons and trying to make PvP more balanced, so that's good, I suppose.

And that's Destiny - the game that promised to be the next Halo, but bigger and better in every way. It could've been good if Bungie was allowed to do their work without Activision's interference. As it is now, it just feels like a desperate money grab. Despite all this, Destiny seems to boast an active fan base (if the official Destiny Facebook page is anything to go by), so the game obviously isn't all that bad. Just really, really flawed.

If you're interested and you'd like to give it a shot, I recommend you wait for a few months until the game gets cheaper, or ideally wait for some sort of an "ultimate" edition, which will inevitably come out and which will contain all the DLCs for a few bucks.

Solid shooting mechanics can't mask the complete lack of depth or variety that mar Destiny's quests and gameplay. The constant use and abuse of the games player base by Bungie and Activision is frankly distressing to see, and I hope this does not become the standard for video games in the future. DLC and Expansions effectively invalidating existing weaponry (which has been altered with a lazy fix) and content as well as a stream of new content that adds little in the way of story or gameplay development makes Destiny an experience that is not only overwhelmingly tedious, but also puts a major dent in your wallet if you wish to continue playing the game. Questlines are repetitive and dull, whilst weapons feel like fairly generic Bungie sci-fi fare. Nothing in this game offers anything in the way of inventive design.

Whilst multiplayer combat is somewhat engaging, narrow game mode options and raids that feel all to similar prevent this game being something one can return to or put a great many hours into unless those you play with are particularly fun or interesting to be around, and if they are, for gods sake do them a favor and stop them from buying this game.

Destiny seems to make an effort to squirrel away it's lore on an external website, which is a shame because it may well be interesting enough to add some level of depth to what ultimately feels like a very 'surface-level' experience, which is to say the game evolves little beyond what you could pick up on immediately whilst watching another play. That said, the game is very pretty to look at, and the graphical quality is certainly something worth praising, despite the fact it dresses up a fairly poor game.

This graphical prowess is ill-utilised by bland, poorly structured cutscenes and environments that have better sky-boxes than they do contents. In raids you can enjoy a series of drab grey corridors and generic sci-fi industrial structures that the game tries to divert attention away from using brightly colored lasers and enemies which, unfortunately, are as unintriguing in design as they are overused. Bosses feel like larger stronger versions of base enemies. Despite efforts to improve this in recent DLCs, enemies still feel dull. It is worth mentioning, however, that the soundtrack, whilst standard Bungie fare by this point, is actually quite compelling and well written, helping to create some sense of mood which the world unfortunately fails to generate or compliment.

Combine these issues with a community comprised mainly of pre-teen to early-teenage boys who are quick to hurl insult and you end up with an uniteresting, vapid experience. Teenage fanboys are quick to jump to the games defense and label people haters, but this ultimately shows the indefensibility of the game, you cannot rebut many of the criticisms hurled at this game because they are, more often than not, accurate.

All in all, Destiny is an unintelligent, repetitive mess of a game, with solid shooting and pretty graphics being the only redeeming features of this shallow exercise in boredom. Over-hyped but ultimately sub-standard, steer clear if you value your time.

I waited a year before i bought this so i would have the extra dlc with it and it (in my opinion) is still an empty game. the pros: The gameplay is fun for a few hours and then it gets stale, if you like the combat in halo then you will like the combat in this but this drags on and i mean grinding away on. Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
