This game is next level. It engrossed me so much that at times I forgot I was playing a videogame. If you're a fan of cinema and videogames, I think Death Stranding is a must play. Never have I experienced a piece of media like this.

And it's the first game I would give a ten out of ten. Yes there are a few flaws but it gets so scaled over by all the good. The flaws I'd say are the unnecessary cutscenes. And the fact we can't just do everything in one screen, like recycling, it's for some reason on another menu. Rather than just an option you can press in the cargo menu. Now I'll say some of the goods to contrary the bad of the game. The environment is super beautiful and super challenging, there isn't a part where you're bored, if I can say so myself, as the environment is an enemy itself. And there are countless of BD territory and MULE territory to spice it up even more. It's super fun all of the challenges and gameplay stuff you'll encounter. There's never a dull moment! But I would say put a higher difficulty than normal, the game was a little easier for me. But it was still fun nonetheless. I would totally recommend this game for anyone! Expand

The online element is unlike anything I have ever seen but it is so satisfying to help and get help from other players. What I like most about the online mechanics is that it is not intrusive, you know its there but it still feels like a single player RPG. The story is amazing so far but personally, what really excels in this game is the visuals. I am playing in 4K HDR and this game is absolutely stunning! The lanscapes, the gameplay and the cutscenes are all incredible. Well done Kojima and thank you for this amazing game! Expand

Separately, we can highlight the plot, the visual component of the game and its soundtrack :They Are Great. What I can say in terms of gameplay, it's not just a "delivery simulator", it's a hardcore balance simulator, and the main question you'll have is how did I even get to this place and how to get back.

Do not pay attention to the bad reviews. most people have not even finished the game (probably none of them even have played it)

the game is frustrating sometimes just like how life is, and I was glad I finished and stuck around till the end.

This is a game that you need to play for yourself, I cried at the end and the message will stay with me for a long time..

    Thank you Kojima.

If you didn't like this game that's fine but for me the story alone makes it a GOTY contender. It's original, engaging, wonderfully weird and totally Hideo Kojima. Can't wait to see what this studio makes next.

Upon doing a full 100% completion of Death Stranding, I would say that the story is every bit worth what you pay. It has that classic Hideo Kojima feel to it, of having 80% of the whole game shrouded in mystery as you play it and only then when you reach the end do you piece together little by little what the whole story was about. It has that classic Hideo Kojima feel to it, of having 80% of the whole game shrouded in mystery as you play it and only then when you reach the end do you piece together little by little what the whole story was about. It's a somewhat complex story with a lot of elements that will feel either unfamiliar or confusing at first, but unless you really invest into the game itself, you may end up knowing less or more than others. Death Stranding very much feels like a movie, and with that being said, I feel the game loses its surprise factor upon completion for the first time.

The game play is where things get tricky, as not everyone is going to be into it, and it's something you will need to invest into to truly enjoy it. Feeling repetitive, tedious, boring, and sometimes lacking, the game play itself really depends on your play style and pacing. Amazon delivery simulator memes aside, there are so many different ways to go from point A to B, and a lot of the enjoyment comes from your own self achievement of how you did it, how fast you did it, and the quality of how you did it. So you may end up liking the game play or hating it, but it doesn't accommodate for the haters at all because you are technically forced to do it to progress the story. Sometimes taking your time and going the long road is faster and way more satisfying than trying to brute force your way through the rough paths just to try and save a couple of minutes, it all comes down to you. Death Stranding also has a cool online system where players help each other out by building structures to create a better world. Even though players can't react with each other physically, you can feel a sense of community within where players are helping each other out to all reach a similar goal. You feel alone in the world but at the same time you aren't. Replay value is there if you genuinely enjoy the game play, but most people will have already accomplished everything that they felt needed to be done and then stay until the story ends. If you happen to invest into the game like I did, you'll find out that there is a lot of additional dialogue in the game that many will miss out simply by rushing through the game. A lot of your "what, who, when, why, and how" questions are more in depth in those email and interview logs, and it may be one of the reasons why you as a first timer might feel the story was too confusing, bad, or lazy.

Honestly though, you can't go wrong with playing this one time through as you have quality actors backing the game like Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, and much more. Not to mention very clean motion capturing and voicing that retains quality of portraying the characters emotions and authenticity. Sound track is one of the best things about Death Stranding and perfectly set as if watching a movie. Even if you don't plan to buy the game, I highly suggest watching a play through of it once, as Hideo Kojima really put a lot of effort into the story, characters, and dialogue. Death Stranding is nothing like any other game and it feels like it's improving the artistic medium as a whole for video games. It's not your standard "kill em all type of game" as Norman Reedus described it. You'll definitely be feeling all kinds of emotions from the start of the journey, till the end.

Any aspect of the game play you choose to commit yourself to and dig deep on (building structures, fostering relationships with outpost residents, recovering stolen packages from enemy NPC camps) are mostly optional but able to be doubled down on and provide satisfying game play.

I'd never played a Kojima game before Death Stranding, but I'm a fan now.

Game play: The main point is as everyone have already saw, the deliver of different types of cargo from point A to point B. This however is mixed with: environmental hazard, physical and realistic reactions to the terrain that no other AAA has and that apply to both Sam and his enemies. Stealth, gun play and a whole weaponry that goes from boleadora pistol, assault rifles, grenades until missile launchers. All of this you can use or build, together with all this you can use or build, along with shelters of different types, bridges, stairs, climbing anchors, different types of exoskeletons that help improve your performance when moving in different kinds of terrain, thermal patches, gas masks, cars, motorcycles, in short; that the game is giving you new options to overcome the new challenges that it proposes every hour or hour and a half. So to everyone out there saying that the game is all cinematic and no game play well, go and play it (also this is one of Kojima's game with less cinematics that, at least, I remember).

Finally, the game has multiple bosses (those that seemed too easy, I think a weak point in the game is the absence of a real challenge regarding the fights, at least in the normal difficulty).
All of the above is presented with a really compelling and original story, marvelous graphics and NO DLC. For all of this reasons I think Death Stranding is one of the best games of the year and one of the best I've played (and I played a lot). Few to no one creator try to sell such a risky proposal and that is something that all gamers should value.

This is an utterly unique game and if you let it take you in, it's easily the most immersive experience you will have in a video game. At times the interface and menu's are difficult, but when you realize all their quirks, you come to realize the controls are exactly what they need to be. It's a complex and relaxing game most of the time, and it takes a lot as a player to work through, but all it's difficulties and challenges highlight the one thing this game does that no other ever has, and that is theme. The theme in this game is the connections between people, and every design quirk, plot point, and arduous mountain climb all work to emphasize that theme. It's a lonely journey, but the connections you make along the way will give you a sense that it was all worth it. This isn't a game that gratifies you, this is a journey you take that pays itself off immensely in the end. Easily the best crafted ending I've seen in a game.
The most important thing I look at a game is how it stays with you, and will I play it again. I equate it most with another great narrative game whos gameplay was not enjoyable, "The Last of Us" but the difference is, the payoff in this is much more profound. This is a game that you won't ever forget, and eventually will draw you in again. In the Last of us, after the damn super zombies get shivved for the last time, I never wanted to play it again. I remember the Giraffe and the end, but nothing about the play really drew me in for a 2nd run. It's impact is totally on a first go round. This one will compel me to play again long into the future.
Yes, it can be a grind, like almost every game these days, whether it's collecting pointless garbage in any grand theft auto or any monotonous deathmatches in any first person shooter you play online. The difference is the rewards for the grind are truly there in game. These continuous missions build the relationship with each person you meet, and the rewards for maximizing that all make the journey easier. Every improvement is a blessing that you earn with hard work, and by the end you turn it into a fun Disney ride for every travel. But you have to earn it through work and with the connections you build in the game, and with the players whom leave stuff to help you out.
This isn't a game that gratifies you, its a profound amount of work for quite the compelling reward. It's a plot of **** nonsense, that makes total sense and ties together perfectly because every aspect follows one cohesive theme. This is a game for everyone, it's value comes through work, through challenges, and there is utterly nothing else like it nor will there ever be. Most negative critiques I read have complaints that show me the people didn't actually play it, just either watched someone else play it or quit because it doesn't have enough blinking lights and bright colors to satisfy the animal brain.
So go into it with an open mindset, put the weight of the world on your impossibly strong back, and take a journey that will bring you somewhere you will never experience again, and will certainly never forget.

I really liked it, as it made me angry sometimes and it made me cry several times, leaving me really shell-shocked for a few days by the end.

I Really believe any that many games could use this type of open world terrain to it's fullest extent, there is just something amazing in it's scope and how it makes you feel so small compared to the world, it is wonderful, and exceedingly beautiful in a PS4 Pro, even in performance mode.

I was already a (Dark Souls reference here) Praise the Sun dude, Sun-Bro (cooperative) and Blade of the Darkmoon (anti-pk) guy before the game came out, so I had a pretty good idea how the asynchronous "strand" multiplayer would work. And so it was, I was obsessed by the notion of being able to help other players, specially those who, as I've seen in countless youtube playthroughs and twitch streams, just rushed the main quest. Man, these people suffered without unlocking the "side missions" gear upgrades. I spent countless hours building and optimizing my structures so they could serve others as best as possible, rather then myself.

Despite de game pacifist vibe, I found the so called Mules (petty thieves with some kleptomaniac disorder) and terrorists, who actually try to murder you, deserving of a punishment greater then just being knocked out or put to sleep with tranquilizer ordinance, so I murdered them all as they attacked me and delivered their cold bodies to the incinerator, as the game story will show you, bodies cannot just be left to rot.

I can't recommend this game enough. Maybe it's not for you, but I urge you to take the time to reach chapter 3 before calling the game boring or giving up, but in the end, you gotta try it yourself and make up your mind.

As for me, It was not just a game, it was a work of art that left a lasting impression.
Even as a FromSoft fanboy, I can safely say Sekiro was not the GOTY, Death Stranding should have won that.

Simple put, this game is a masterpiece that pushes the medium forward. I do not hand out many 10s on Metacritic. Some games deserve the upper echelon praise and this this one of them. I hope other developers and developers to come make note of this. You can gamify anything. For the longest time, games have been about shooting and killing. This is includes open world games. But games can be about anything, especially open world games Death Stranding proves that.

Usually I separate the bad and the good in my user reviews. Death Stranding is such a unique entity that it is impossible to separate the bad from the good because the bad might be the good. The game begins like a slow “walking simulator”. The player character is a porter who carries goods on his back and makes his way through a barren post apocalyptic landscape while a song from a little known Icelandic group plays in the background. I can understand how gamers, including professional reviewers, would be slow to warm up to this game. My advice for new players is to keep going. Like Kojima’s Metal Gear series, Death Stranding keeps adding gameplay elements and tools for the player character to overcome obstacles. By the end, this game is as relentless as any. Basically, a game like Death Stranding is for finishers.

The premise of the game is connecting people. The player character does this by transporting goods from one location to the other. Traversing terrain is not trivial but also not impossible. You can be strategic and lay out a path with ladders and climbing ropes in the early game and larger structures in the later game. Or you can try to shove a vehicle over the rocks and through streams. Anyone familiar with the Halo series knows that you can eventually fit a vehicle into a space that it is not supposed to go. This is only a portion of the game. The other portion, if you want it to be, is kicking ass.

The game gives the player character a progressively more powerful arsenal to defeat enemies. You start by using fists to knock out humans and end by using assault rifles and rocket launchers. The game is very clear that human enemies are not to be killed. No spoilers except to say that dead bodies are difficult to deal with. That doesn’t stop the player character from ramming humans with vehicles or knocking them out with rubber bullets. You can be stealthy like Metal Gear Solid if you want to, and the multitude of options is what separates a magnificent game from a decent game.

An arsenal of weapons also becomes available to deal with ghosts, a.k.a. BTs. No spoilers here. The player confronts ghosts in the opening cutscene. You start out playing a survival horror game and finish in monster slaying game. At some point you have to realize that Death Stranding is a video game and the ghosts are NPCs that follow rules. You can rely on stealth like with humans or you can also go in guns blazing to clear an area. Preparation and strategy is all up to the player and I love it.

The real gem of this game is the connection with other players. Although you never see the other players in you game, right from the start, you will see structures built by other players. You will build a bridge and another player will use it. You will find cargo lost by other players that you can use or return to them. Some structures will be partially built by other players and finished by you. During an intense fight, an avatar of another player will toss you items to help you. I found myself growing more communal, and sending items I did not need to a shared locker instead of my private locker. I built bridges to make the game easier for new players. I was effusive with likes to other players. I would love to see more of this.

If I have any criticism of Death Stranding, its in the UI for handling inventory. After about 40 hours of play, I still have difficulty understanding when to hold the X button to go back to the menu or when hit the O button to cancel a selection. The inventory system in Death Stranding is a bit unique in that each item is a fully modeled object. You can see how the items load into the player character’s backpack. There is no magic bag of infinite volume and finite weight like Skyrim or a grid of boxes to fill like The Witcher. I merely wish there were a few tweaks to make the UI easier to understand.

All in all, Death Stranding is fully deserving of all of its game of the year awards. In many ways, it deserves better of players. Few games bust through genres and even fewer succeed. Consumers like familiar things. They want the same Call of Duty, the same actors in every movie, and the same sounding music. Every now and then, someone like Kohima comes along and gives us something different. Embrace it.

Full disclosure: I played Death Stranding on PS5. The load times were super fast like any game on PS5. Transitioning from safe houses to the open world may have been torture on the PS4. I wouldn’t know.

As Kojimas first proper release as an independent studio and a brand new narrative this game exceeds the traditional barriers of game development pushing narrative and storytelling in gaming even further, Even in its worst moments Death Stranding always shines, from traversing the horrors of a BT infested field to travelling to WW1 & WW2 to traversing the snowy mountains this game offers players a unique experience for gaming.

Estuve envuelto y atraído por la historia desde su inicio, pero al llegar al tercer acto y parte final del juego, simplemente quería que terminara, estaba cansado, ligeramente fastidiado de la monotonía y de sus extensas escenas finales.

Ok jokes aside, I would totally expect a lot of people not to like this game due to its slow pace and not-too-exciting gameplay, and because it's such a unique game it was always bound do create some controversy.

Here's the deal, imo the story, acting and world building are the real stars of the game. How did Kojima come up with this world, story, art and design I have no idea.
The gameplay is actually very polished and does what it tries to do perfectly. The problem is that what it's trying to do is something that no crazy game developer has ever dared to try before, that is essentially a walking simulator. Now that term is too simplistic, and I'm not using it in a negative way, but traversing environments and obstacles to go from point A to point B is what 90% the gameplay is about. I personally didn't hate it, and I found it fascinating, but yes, it was a dull experience at times. After all, it's tough to create excitement without combat, survival thrill or competitiveness being key parts of a game. Still though, if you're like me and you find yourself completely captivated by Death Stranding's world and its mysteries, you will always have the motivation to keep going through adversities to eventually reach your destination. After all, it's not supposed to be easy or fun for a post apocalyptic delivery guy to get the job done, and this game manages to put the player's in it's protagonist shoes like few others.
This struggle and loneliness you feel throughout the game is what gives meaning and beauty to the online interactive system where players can help each other without ever meeting in person. When you find a tool or other kind of boost left over by another delivery guy, that's when you're reminded that you're not alone and that humans can pull though when they stick together, which is one of, if not the main moral lesson of the game. This is only one of many examples of what makes Death Stranding one of the most innovative, creative, passionate games ever made.

Expand

It uses a complex physics system to make traversal fun and engaging. Momentum, center of balance, and weight all affect how your character interacts with the world. The reason why traversal is so interesting in this game is because a delivery is rarely just a matter of walking from point A to point B; instead, you will be forced to balance and navigate a large myriad of systems and obstacles in order to complete your missions. Small rocks can trip you, rivers can sweep you away, and ledges can prove fatal. Keeping Sam upright as you traverse this deadly world is engaging exactly because of these obstacles and the difficulty involved with navigating them successfully. In addition to this core gameplay, you will be able to construct structures, ladders, and ropes which adds an extra layer of fun to the game. The building mechanic allows you to creatively solve challenges like ascending a large mountain or crossing a deep, rapid river. Each mission is more or less the same; however, each mission presents different challenges that you must over come with the tools available to you. You could descend a mountain by creating a series of ziplines with other players, you could simply use a system of ropes and ladders, or you could let a stream sweep you all the way down which is fast but dangerous. On top of the core mechanics related to traversal, you will also have to use stealth and combat to overcome an interesting variety of enemies including MULES(humans) and BTs(ghosts). Both of these enemy types will offer you the chance to test out a large variety of tools, guns, and gadgets. In addition to all of this, there are 8 unique boss fights that will blow you away with their presentation, design, and the original gameplay associated with some of them. On top of the core game, there is a fascinating world and story that will keep you interested from beginning to end despite some clunky dialogue and exposition. Ultimately, Death Stranding is clearly not a game for everyone but don't let critics convince you that it isn't supposed to be fun. For half of those who play the game, it will be addicting and immersive; for the other half, it will be tedious and bewildering. You should rent the game to see which one of those camps you fall into. Regardless, Death Stranding serves as proof of why Sony has won this console generation. They will put in the time and money to let creators create the games that they would like to play, even if those games might not always be financially successful. Like a great movie studio, they use their resources and platform to let artist flourish with almost complete freedom and the result is an astonishing collection of unique exclusives. Uncharted 4, God of War, Last Guardian, Bloodborne, SpiderMan, and Death Stranding are all examples of exciting, emotional, and wholly distinctive pieces of their creators that only exist because SONY understands that curating true art is the best pathway to establishing a successful console. What I found most surprising was not the level of details that Kojima infuses into his games (what you can pick up, animations and interactions) but more the cooperative factor from other gamers (Dark Souls). Placing helpful signs, cheering people on, leaving gifts...Seeing a new bridge pop up or pitching in materials to finish up a structure is fun and keeps giving you reasons to grab just one...more...delivery. The genius of the game is the zen like moments it creates (should you choose to embrace the atmosphere) and then the hard shifts when you're spotted by MULES or stumble upon BT territory and the ante goes up.

Again, kudos to Kojima. It's not a "perfect" game. It's a brave game in a world that is ever tempted to give into producing the same old rehashed shooters and open world games that try to throw so much at you but never really make it feel like it mattered. Akin to popcorn Summer blockbusters. They're fun and necessary. But so are art house films that make you feel something deeper or remind you of why you love cinema (gaming in this case).

You'll probably know if this game is for you by now. If you're just starting, get to Chapter 3. Echoing what other outlets are saying, things probably hit their stride there for most people though I found the early two chapters nowhere near as monotonous as people were saying early on. I hope to see more risks taken like this from developers in the future. This is the first game in the nearly 35 years I've been playing them since the early Nintendo days that reminded me that brave ideas make for the most memorable experiences.

    This game is very innovative.
The fun factor is radically different from previous games, so people who notice it and those who don't will be judged differently.
I don't know how interesting this game is until I play it by myself. I'm pretty sure anyone who notices it on their own will rate the game at 10. At the very least, through this game, I was able to enjoy and experience

Death Stranding is as bizarre as it is unique, a futuristic sci-fi romp through a post apocalyptic wasteland. The Kojima-initiated will find much to love in this title, and for the others... well.. MAYBE STICK TO CALL OF DUTY YOU SHEEP HAR HAR HAR HJFDDFJH

Great story, great multiplayer experience, and despite what some critics say, great gameplay. The gameplay turns certain people off because they insist on doing things like trying ride a bike up a sheer mountain wall, but its really great if you chill the fk out and appreciate that your choices have consequences. The way the multiplayer works is genius.

Very addictive with a great story one of the best games released recently I'm 80+ hours in and only just finished episode 9. I keep getting sidetracked either by scenery or deliveries and I've also been walking everywhere by choice only using viechles when speed is required

One of the most unique and interesting games I’ve ever played. It definitely isn’t for everyone and certainly had its flaws, but overall a mostly relaxing, contemplative, and enjoyable experience.

I could say a lot but no one will read it, i just wanted to give a fair score for a good game, while not the best 10/10 game ever made, it certainly isn’t a 0/10 like most of the angry reviewers

In reality, I would give it an 8.5/10 but since you can’t do that here I have no problem rounding up.

This game is exactly what the trailers showed: dark and twisted, supernatural, best graphics to date, superb acting and motion capture, amazing music, beautiful landscapes, relaxing gameplay segments, horror elements, deep intricate story, lovable characters. A game truly made with HEART.
I just finished after about 2 weeks of every day playing, and it was such an amazing game! Best game

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
