The game is unbelievably buggy. I’m astonished Ubisoft released it in this state. Furthermore, combat is janky and lacks impact, despite the flashy finishing moves. This makes it really hard for me to get into a rhythm in terms of the combat, which is something I appreciated about AC Odyssey.

In summary, there’s a lot to like about it, from the setting to some of the game mechanics, but it’s totally bogged down by it being a buggy janky mess. Maybe once they release some patches I’ll try it again but right now it’s just not worth the effort to play.

Every hour I spend with the game, I like it a little less. In Odyssey there were camps/outposts/fortresses that you'd locate, clear out, loot, ETC and then move on to the next one. It was a satisfying loop. But in Valhalla...everything is replaced with these colored dots. In Odyssey there were camps/outposts/fortresses that you'd locate, clear out, loot, ETC and then move on to the next one. It was a satisfying loop. But in Valhalla...everything is replaced with these colored dots. Even if you go into a fortress and clear it out...there's no feedback letting you know you've accomplished anything. Was there a treasure here? Did I actually complete anything? The only thing you've succeeded in doing it killing a bunch of dudes in a fort.

And speaking of "killing a bunch of dudes", stealth feels like an afterthought in this game. Sneaking up on an enemy is more difficult and it seems like the enemy placement and number is randomly generated? They are everywhere, they act like lemmings with the IQ of 2, they are never doing anything interesting, wonder aimlessly, but all swarm to the player's position 3 soldiers at a time.

So, the map objective have been boiled down into colored dots. At least that will make it easy to find them and check them off the list. Not so fast...a seemingly large percentage of these dots are locked behind unbreakable doors or under the ground. Time to frustratingly waste 5 to 10 minutes looking for a cave entrance for an ultimately uninteresting trinket.

The game looks awesome and there are some definite design improvements. The skill tree, ability, and equipment systems have improved in a myriad of ways. The attention to historical detail is astounding and above and beyond what most other game series attempt to do. It's a level of commitment that should be commended. That commendation however shouldn't forgive the poor design choices of the rest of the game's sections.

Oh, and the whole "Chase and catch the floating paper!" minigame has made its return...

Surprisingly good Assassin's Creed game, not only better than Odyssey, but it's just so much better. But it's pretty obvious that tons of people don't understand the appeal of Snowy Norway or Beautiful England and just call it boring. That's a shame, but whatever. To me 5 hours long Spiderman Miles Morales is boring, so to each their own i guess.

Basically, it's a good Assassins Creed RPG, though very light on the Assassin part. Not Ezio saga good, but so far it has given me a better experience than Odyssey overall. Not Ezio saga good, but so far it has given me a better experience than Odyssey overall. Particularly in the worldbuilding, the 'World Events' Read: Quests, but they're just interactions with various odd locals, ranging from helping someone deliver a crate of apples, to stealing clothes at a nudist party. They're misc. quests, but they're handled very well here.

Meanwhile the story also offers a different experience from previous games; Where before, you're either the main Assassin, in this one, you're their ally. Offering them shelter, helping them rebuild, but (at least for the time being) solidly from the outside looking in. Which feels fresh.

Aside from the small bugs we all know will probably stay, what really bothers me in this iteration is the sound levels. Sound effects and the Protagonists' voice seem to be on a very different setting from other characters voices, forcing you in some situations to either have a hard time hearing the NPC's, or get deafened by your own character.

Combat also feels a bit slower, and difficulty settings in combat once again only serve to make your enemies damage spunges while turning you into a wet blanket, but even so it feels right to play it at the highest difficulty. Enemies take several hits to take down, and you can similarly take about as many hits as the average mook/low-class enemy from enemies at your level. I imagine lower difficulties would be shockingly easy though, and just adjusting damage and health numbers remains a sloppy way to balance in my opinion.

What also grinds my gear is that platforming and the like seems to have been reduced to a matter of two buttons; Hold A (xbox) to free run, press B to drop. I miss the days of AC: Unity, where you actually had significant freedom of movement, and where parkour took skill to truly master.

In summation: The world itself and the story so far, have been interesting, fresh iterations on the standard Assassins Creed formula. Modern day story also seems quite interesting for what little there has been so far. (~10 hours of play, 1 Modern Day part.) Two points taken away due to:
    1) Bugs
    2) Sound balancing
    3) The horrifically oversimplified movement.

In defiance of each country's review criteria, Ubisoft unified the Asian version into the Japanese version as if the Asian country were only in Japan.

I don't feel the impact of fighting because of censorship.

If Ubisoft really cares about its Asian users, it has a duty to revise the censored version.

This game is not bad but its not good either, They do good things with the story and graphic, but with all of this I feel unrewarded, the loot pool compared to odyssey is barely existing, exploration is not as fun as it should be the whole map despite is look gorgeous feel like just empty checklist

Great game. Love the fact is brutal and attractive open world to explore. I think its definitely and improvement on previous AC games but still has a few downsides.
Great story and fighting and progression but very sensitive left stick controls to move around.
Overall i'm really enjoying it and just hope it s a lengthy game as i want more and more all the time.

I bet most of them wanted to get out of Norway as fast as possible instead of actually enjoying the scenery, exploring, etc. What a shame. But this game is amazing anyway so i personally don't care really. These same people praise Miles Morales because they got to finish it fast and move onto next big thing...pathetic. There seems to be many Youtubers who actually like it and understand this game and that's at least positive. Expand

Basically, it is Odyssey with other landscacpe. Story forgettable, combat spongy, silly side quests, embarrassing dialogues.

I don't know what is wrong with Ubisoft but obviously their Copy-Paste-System of game developing works for them. Unfotunately.

The game is amazing, the graphics are beautiful and the characters are well modeled, the game has a lot to explore and if you want to have everything you will have to play for a long time, the story is also cool, the combat is different from the old ones and combines with thematic.

ry. It glitches like wwe 2k20. The story like any other ac you either love or hate. If your going to play I would not do it on a high difficulty. Once you hit all but one loot cache you get a one shot and loose your progress. That's fine right except when you glitch in close quarter combat. Patches should not constitute for ubisoft lack of effort. Patches are meant to fix parts not an entire wwe2k20 glitches. Shame on you ubisoft you failed this time. Good thing it's is free for ps5 if you own it on 4. Sarcastic this should make whoever approved the release to have 7 years of diarrhea with no toilet paper.

A game with the same recycled engine and great Viking theme but it fails to really deliver in being interesting aside from the environment and theme. It feels like a game made by a company with no passion that is just pushing things out the door. I doubt any of the employees are passionate about their jobs.

Also why are there women in the boat when you go raid? Did women fight with axes

I played the main story until you could free roam and that I did. I finished most of the side quests and collectibles in the first area and then I went to progress in the main story. I couldn't progress in the main story it is bugged. Literally one of the first main story quests is bugged so that you can't progress any further.

    As for the gameplay:
They removed quality of life things like filtering of photos on the world map. I don't want my world map to be cluttered with pictures I haven't looked at.
The second thing that they negatively changed is the duration of the enemy highlighting after using eagle sense. Previously the enemies were highlighted until you left the area, but now you have to use eagle sense every 30 seconds and they made it a skill to "highlight all nearby enemies when you are crouched and undetected". I guess they ran out of skills and just said: "Let's take away a skill they had forever and give it back, but this time make it so that they have to spend skill points"
You don't the full skill tree, but only parts that you are adjacent to, so you can't plan your character development ahead , which is for me one the stupidest things they could have done in an action RPG game.

The free climbing mechanics are still wonky as they ever have been.
The sounds seems to be off sometimes. I played the female, but it felt like the soundfiles for the male character were played instead of the female.

The game looks beautiful though, that's why it's not a zero score

Best one since black flag. It is alot more focused then Odyssey, you don't have to grind side quests which was the worst part of the last one. Actually has assassin's in it. Being a viking is bad ass. Modern story seems interesting so far. Only complaint is the game still feels a little to big ? Which isn't super bad but I get overwhelmed with all the side stuff. This designer was not a good man - he bullied his staff and harassed his coworkers. He also had really short attention span, so he insisted on gutting and simplifying every aspect of the AC games. The man is now gone after a proper scandal, but the crippled, lame version of the AC series remain as his "legacy". Gone are well-written dialogues and historical facts cleverly woven into an intricate story, replaced by vague Netflix-grade "fanfiction". The core of the game is now pure grind - do the same things over and over and over again, collecting miniscule amounts of resources you need to spend by the ton to upgrade your gear. Or head to the shop and pay to be allowed to skip the grind. But I have found a better move yet - I headed to the shop and did not buy the game. Thus, I saved money and time to play games that actually do not suck. I recommend you do the same! BTW there were no female vikings, no female knights (knightesses), no female legionaries, you get it. That's all BS historical revisionism. Expand

I don't understand why the Asian version was censored by Japanese standards. Japan does not represent Asia. Japan has an unusually strict standard.

There are far fewer cookie-cutter outposts than in previous AC’s, and most sidequests now offer an interesting story, sometimes even with a less-than-obvious solution. While some anti-grind measures have backfired, Ubisoft is on the right track. [Issue#250, page 56]

Assassins Creed Valhalla is a wonderful addition to the AC franchise. It manages to avoid the tropes that became overplayed and focuses on a small well structured story. The fighting mechanics are enjoyable and offer many choices to fit different playing styles. There are a significant amount of bugs and the AI is underwhelming at times. But it's still another step in the right direction for Ubisoft.
