Despite all this, I had a lot of fun exploring The Ancient Greece. And I don't regret having spent over 100 hours of my life on this game. Expand

The world is so much detailed, just a big company like Ubisoft is able to create this level of detail along this scale. This game delivers a full package of a modern open world adventure. Thanks to the PS5 patch the overall visual fidelity was greatly enhanced and 60 fps gameplay is just a pleasure. This open world action rpg shouldn’t missed by anyone.

    Hint for new players: I strongly recommend to play as Kassandra.

The combat is great. I didnt have issues with loot box part as ppl say. Yes you can buy all sorts of things but the legendary gear sets and weapons you buy are not as strong as the weapons and gear you pick up playing the game. Ppl have complained about the leveling system but I didnt have an issue with that. I beat the game around level 42. I was so immersed in this world that this is the only game I finished at 100%. I did the game plus after that and did 100% again. I have 1033 hours into this game. Negatives,and it's a big one for me. Bandit camps are the same. I feel that was a very lazy decision to make this game BIGGER. They should have taken more time and made 6 to 8 different bandit camps then spread those through the world. I like that Ubisoft have constant updates to bounty hunters and updating new missions. These missions are very repetitive though. But the beauty of the world and the power I have as a player in defeating enemies is great. I liked being able to climb anything and have the powers I have and fighting mythological beasts and creatures. Ubisoft should have taken more time though to make missions and camps feel different. If that happened I would have made the game a 10. Expand

    The score does not reflect this game's true value. I avoided buying this game just like with the AC Origins because of how low it has scored and I am ashamed that I misjudged AC Odyssey like that. I wish I played it sooner to experience its fun gameplay and beautiful settings. Maybe the most mesmerizing open world ever existed!!

    The open world is huge but it is an empty space with nothing to do and the map looks the same everywhere you go

    This game has some HUGE level gating so you have to do like 7 boring side missions to level up your character after you beat a main mission and Ubisoft is doing this to force you to buy microtransactions (XP boosters and such) and if you do a mission which is like 2 levels or 1 higher than your character? you get DESTROYED

I don't know how much time I spent looting and selling/dismantling loot in this game. Not even a big MMO dungeon has so much loot as AC Odyssey has in like 5 minutes of clearing a camp. I feel a little sad that the AC games have shifted towards a spam attack buttons and loot game. The game tries to incorporate dialogue decisions and consequences into the game but it's so poorly executed that it makes all of the story dialogues feel awkward. The RPG elements are kind of fun but I felt like way too much focus was put into turning this into an RPG at the sacrifice of the writing. Assassin's Creed used to be about immersing you into an important historical period you understand and see the politics of the viewpoints of the time. That gets lost in this game as they try to let you play for both Athens and Sparta. All of the side characters are just super awkward and poorly written. Bring back the assassin's and templars and historical storylines. Expand

    You may have realised that I didn't mention anything about assassins, probably because there aren't any. The traditional one shot assassinations now only deal half the damage and no longer kill someone instantly and the story is somewhat boring. I could probably get into it if the main quest didn't require 5 hours of side quests to get to the level you need to start the thing. Some of the characters are interesting but I do have a question. Why make the player choose between 2 characters if you only really care about one? It just screams lack of dedication. Not only that, but the same character model is used again and again, oh look this pirate woman is a priestess now on the same island! And the mercenary's make no sense as they can track you instantly despite being over 5000m away from you at the time and just randomly stalk you, phones didn't exist back then so it was word of mouth or letters and neither of these were implemented. The gems and rocks you are me at to collect haven't been designed well either, they morph into walls so you can't reach them but ping anyway. It could be ignored by some but annoy the living daylights out of me. This shouldn't have been labelled as an ac game as it holds no resemblance to the franchise. Origins was nice because it was a new game style but even then the replacement of Eagle vision with an actual Eagle was pushing it. Now eagles are the eyes of the characters with no explanation for how this happened. Don't get me wrong, the characters look great with Alexios having very kind eyes and the facial expressions being amusing, but the game feels like it was rush produced and kind of shows that. Now there's also an emphasis on tombs, like the Greeks were all lara croft and possessed magic. I'm going to be honest and say that the modern story is lost on me at this point. I have no idea what's happening and each game seems to be standalone to me now. Not only is the game incredibly repetitive, there's also a very large amount of bugs that just cause the game to crash or break that don't appear in the previous installments like unity or syndicate despite being played on the same console. Multiple forums online also attest to these bugs appearing across multiple platforms and countries so it can't be the console itself. I could go on and on about why this is a bad game but that would waste more of my time and I think enough of that has been used on this game. The story line is forgotten when you are forced to level up before playing and the exploration mode is illogical when it essentially guides you to the marker anyway. Do not fork out full price for this, I wouldn't even bother as you will just become frustrated unless you like meaningless combat and time wasting. For a game marketed at £40 on release, it barely rivals the early xbox original games as games like the original fable would be a more enjoyable experience.

This year, I finally made it to Assassin's Creed Odyssey and I began an adventure with Kassandra, exciting to see where the story went over the years.

    The first thing quickly realized, is the story didn't seem to care much for what I loved about the series (the lore, if you will). However, AC Odyssey invites you into the world of Ancient Greece. The gameplay is smooth, the graphics are breathtaking, and the story is immersive. I never ran out of things to do and every mission felt more of an exploratory task than a mission. After a while, I didn't want to leave Ancient Greece anyway.

    I think this is one of the top five games I've played since 2000. I love Greek mythology and I love how Odyssey tells the story of Kassandra like the Odyssey. The game is filled with surprises and adventure, and the writing ties it all together in spectacular fashion. I played 104 hours and had a hard time stopping to move on to my next game. I want to play Valhalla, but now sure it can live up to my expectation now.

    If you liked Origins but thought it had a too plausible story and too little level scaling and you LOVE to grind, this game may just be for you. If you are more like me, the game is just good enough to not stop playing. (After all, I couldn't return it anyway, thanks ubisoft -.-)

    I'm generally not a fan of levelscaling, but in Origins it was less annoying. To make it bearable I advise to get a trainer and use an exp multiplier to get yourself to the max level. This takes most of the stupid level mechanics out of the way. If this was not possible, I would have stopped playing and gave this a way worse rating.
    Visually the game is quite good and the gameplay is, besides grinding, mostly entertaining. The main story is mostly entertaining, with some really stupid moments in there. The sidequests are just garbage, ignore them.

    Regarding the DLCs:
    - The atlantis one feels a bit too similar to the Origins DLC and has some questionable story moments, but besides that is quite entertaining. I think I liked it more than the main game.
    - I didn't like the legacy of the first blade. I disliked the story, some main characters and the pretense of choice. In most situations what I wanted to do was not allowed by the game / story and some theoretically important "choices" were rendered meaningless by imo lazy plot devices.

    as someone who played AC since the first game, this is the biggest pile of **** I have ever encountered. The story is godawful, the map is big but COMPLETELY forgettable. seriously, who asked for a map this big? Brotherhood's map was only Rome, but memorable and the game is the best in the franchise.

    like for instance, the bandit camps are copypasted. EVERY bandit camp has the exact same layout clucked everywhere over the map. The naval combat is mindnumbing as hell just like the combat. Every enemy is basically a damage sponge.

    Everything the franchise was based on is completely thrown out of the window. You don't have a hidden blade, there is no creed or templars even. And the inclusion of magic is godawful; what even is this? Suddenly i am able to magically ignite my sword or smear my axe with poison with sheer magic?!. I remember when they removed a crossbow from AC 1 just because it was not historically accurate.

    furthermore, the choices are a ridiculous addition. your playing through someone's memories through the animus. Why in the hell should you be able to make choices?
    Parkour is also garbage and completely removed. you don't even have to find a path anymore you can just hold your joystick forward in combination with X. And you just walk in a straight line over rocks and everything.
    hunting is also awful, killing a bear or something is not even a challenge, but a one hit. IT IS A **** BEAR! you should be fighting for your life!

    and the most awful of all is the removal and massacre of stealth. Why remove social stealth? why remove haybales?
    I simply do not get it

    In conclusion, this might be the worst game I have ever played in my life. And I have for the life of me nothing positive to say about it.
    The franchise is not dead. It was murdered.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright so I am entirely re-writing this review after having put in probably more hours than this game is worth. Which makes me incredibly sad to say honestly. The amount of pure potential available in this particular release is so incredibly immense and the fact that it feels so rushed in so many places. I want to love this game so much I can't think of a way to properly express myself in some sort of composed manner and not looking like well a mess.
    While there is indeed a lot of very good and really fun things in this game, the story and characters feel for lack of better wording, flat and uninspired for a grand majority of the game. So, I would like to say in regards to my review and previous now redacted review and before I continue further, I have the overall same viewpoint as I did before that the game is not worth the money unless on a 75% or more sale for just the base game as the DLC is well... Bad, really bad.
    So as for overall game play, the game is really enjoyable. It's relatively intuitive and easy to learn. So if you're relatively new to the RPG genre or just want some (most of the time) fair but punishing combat, stealth and an open world "sandbox" that you can do a rather absurd amount of things in. You'll probably have a pretty good time with this game.
    However, if you are coming into this game wanting to have a deep story with fully developed characters and dialogue choices that matter. I would suggest you move on and probably play something like the Witcher series. Kassandra/Alexios as a base character give you nothing to really work with as a player or character motivation until you get into the main story line. But if you are to go ahead and just say "Oh well, then it's fine right?" you would be wrong. For what reason does Kassandra/Alexios have to pursue the contract given to you by Elpenor? You gain nothing aside from by pure coincidence a way off of Kephalonia. (after having maybe set a plague loose on the entire greek world, good job btw... I actually really loved this feature and it gave me a ton of hope as to what was in store for this game)
    ~~~~~~~~SO FROM HERE ON OUT IMMA SAY IT, ~~~~SPOILER WARNING~~~~~~~
    Alright so, I have very little aside from what is stated above up until we get up to meeting with our real dad. Well that's not true, because part of what decides if you get a true good ending comes well before this, actually really rather close to the beginning of the game in the grand scheme of things. Yup I'm talking about how you kill the Monger. Kill him secretly? you're gonna get the true good ending as you'll be saving the greatest amount of people. Kill him in public like the rat he deserves? Well I guess you're out of luck and you are forced to kill Lagos the Archon. An innocent man blackmailed into doing the cults bidding because they kidnapped his wife and child. Bet you feel like a real douche now, huh. WELP there is no way to undo this unless you wanna replay the last 50-75 hours and lose all that time you spent leveling and getting gear, boy that's sure a shame.
    Now onto how you interact with you're real dad, Pythagoras... I HATE, the interactions with him. WHY THE HELL DO YOU FEEL OBLIGATED TO HELP HIM AT ALL? He has done nothing for you, not even once as far as we know and will ever know. "Yeah dad, thanks for the eagle. Pretty neat trick" ????? Also if you choose the dialogue option "You haven't earned my help." Alexios/Kassandra act all angry and Pythagoras gives you zero response to that anger as you're just some child throwing a temper tantrum. You are never given a real, meaningful reason to pursue helping them or even giving a damn about Pythagoras he's just suddenly there. After everything Kasssandra/Alexios has been through, you don't think they deserve SOME if ANY compassion or explanation upfront? But no, that's okay don't worry about all that I guess because that is totally not what some rational and normal human being would do.
    I'm going to skip over ALL of the scenes where we are controlling Layla as they are really just pointless in this game and serve no purpose what so ever really other than to remind you that "Yeah there's plot here, you just have to find it lmao." Even when there really isn't any real plot involving her or anything she is doing at this time. All of those scenes feel incredibly forced as if they were an after thought as the developers seemingly realized that Desmond leaving the animus a few times in the original series happened and received a fair amount of praise.
    TLDR; garbage game, honestly, what a way to kill a franchise. the critic reviews are ONLY reviewing the shortened part of the game for review, NOT the FULL game.
    I've had 2 playthroughs myself
    > 1 I made it to level 50, did some side stuff, and uncovered the whole map
    > 1 I made it to level 30-ish and was doing mostly side stuff
    > 1 where I watched my girlfriend play through the Kassandra storyline, on PC with 8x XP (using a trainer).
    > Given that I've played it for that amount of hours and bought it at 50% off, I'd say that there's plenty of value for money, but I would not recommend it at full price.
    Positives
    --------------
    > Honeymoon period lasts 10-15h before you start to notice glaring issues
    > Map is big, if you're a fan of just exploring and seeing pretty landscapes it's worth wandering around. The first time you zoom out of the map, it blows your mind
    > There are various different systems in place* - the Sparta vs Athens war, the Cult, the mercenaries, etc.
    > There's an abundance of loot with different rarities and appearance
    > There's a decent skill tree to be explored
    > Recruiting crew for your ship is fun.
    > Some of the choices are pretty good and have interesting results
    > Almost no Abstergo
    Negatives
    ---------------
    > Story is AWFUL - when I figured out who your father is and what he is doing I almost quit the game. Laughably bad sci-fi fanfiction story writing
    > The accents of characters are horrible
    > Padding - the game nerfs your progression and you're forced to do mundane, busywork, copy-pasted side content
    > In a game called "Assassin's Creed", you should always be able to assassinate someone while sneaking (with the exceptions of bosses). When you sneak on an NPC while they sleep, you should be able to kill them while in stealth, not just deal a moderate amount of damage and wake them up.
    > Traversal is horrible - the horse feels like a soulless mechanic, just get on it, set a waypoint, and let it take you there. The ship is boring and at times you get attacked by pirates or whatever while trying to get to your location. It's very annoying.
    > The gear drops all the time, legendary gear does not feel special or earned since it's so commonly found.
    > The combat is the worst in AC history. It's so tiring, repetitive and goofy. You end up rolling and running around like a moron, just waving your swords around ridiculously.
    >*The mechanics that I mentioned do not connect meaningfully to the entirety of the game and just feel slapped on the game with no point, just to have it.
    > Romance options are very weird and feel tacked on > I'd prefer a more developed (male or female) character instead of 2 really bland main character options > Every time the sci-fi elements are brought in, I hated it > Historic personalities are just slapped in there like a celebrity cameo in a sitcom > Camera is too far away and make the character look tiny. When heavily geared up he looks like a chunk of metal jumping and rolling around.
I originally came into the came with a negative mindset but playing through it, the game became one of the most fun games i’ve played this year. The combat is really fun and the story is decent. I say the story is decent because the ending didn’t feel fulfilling for me. I got the happy/best ending but it didn’t feel like it. I also wish the cult of kosmos members you hunt down played a bigger role and i wish the enemies weren’t so damage spongey. I also expected the main antagonist to play a larger role but they would only show up in cutscenes and we rarely get to see them outside of that. Expand
Odyssey has a wealth of great ideas although they are all, without exception, shamelessly stolen from better games. Paying bounties like RDR, the nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor, tagging enemies and slow motion stealth like MGSV, the dialogue options and quest vocal cheer from the Witcher 3. Honestly a lot from the Witcher 3... This would not be a problem if not for AC:O's lack of originality. Enemies are too spongey, and levelling up takes far too long. For this reason the game is better with an XP booster... Hard to imagine that was unintentional. The story is the same cliche of revenge and plot twist about you being the chosen one, it really isn't anything you haven't seen before. The "Ancient Greek" setting is utterly pretentious and overstated for the simple reason that the majority of the story revolves around personal problems, money and bandits, thus making the historical setting more of a gimmick than as genuinely deep and educational as God of War, for example. What I mean is the Mythology and History is never deeply explained, it feels more like an annoying child dropping names for attention, when all the adults know full well that the child doesn't understand what theyre talking about. What quality there surely is has already been done to DEATH by other games, including other Ubisoft games... A fine example of "games as service", we are sold this '"minimum viable product" skin and bones while the meat and veg are hidden behind DLC pay walls. I would personally argue any huge fan of this game doesn't understand the games industry and has no appreciation for better games, otherwise why would you play this to be frank... Quality over quantity Ubisoft. There is quality here, buried underneath a mountain of 4K, overly rewarding **** Expand
    Assassin's creed odyssey is one of the biggest rpg that has ever been created. It is almost unbelievable how vast this game is. You can easily spend more than 100 hours yet there will be much more to explore.
    Game wasn't bad, but not the experience I was hoping for. I found the story to be boring and drawn out, and an unfortunate step down from Assassin's Creed Origins. The gameplay and combat systems were good and fun to play. The NPC level scaling left me feeling like all the side quests I was putting time in to were pointless ass grinding also increased the level of all of the enemies.     The looks a feel of this game are decent. Its why I spent money on the game.
    I wish I hadn't. Imitation difficulty seems to be par for the course for ubisoft. Player is winning a fight? Okay, spawn 12 more enemies on top of the player.. winning isnt allowed. It makes emerson into the game impossible.
    After a few games, I will never spend a dime on assassins creed anything again, nor
    After a few games, I will never spend a dime on assassins creed anything again, nor anything ubisoft. It doesnt matter how good a game looks or feels, with emerson breaking garbage programming it becomes worthless.
    Maybe my expectations are too high, expecting a quality product from an obviously substandard company.
    A boring, dull, long and confusing game. After completing Origins I must say that this game is a disappointment. The only motivation to carry on is to finish it off once and for all and never think about it again. This game doesn't have anything to do with the AC saga and the creed itself. For me it's the most overrated Assassin's of all.
    Great game! If you enjoy the grind, most of the negative reviews seem to be from kids who expect instant gratification with their games.     Шикарная игра с шикарным миром. Да, есть минусы в плане анимации и диалого, но изучать мир очень интересно!
    Best Assassins Creed experience ever made. With a refined combat system and the dog elements game, it creates such a unique player experience. The voice acting in this game stands out above others in the series and creates a very immersive and interesting environment. Although not a true assassin the player can still follow the traditional assassin's Creed formula of slowly assassinating every enemy or you can be a true Spartan (or Athenian) and kill every enemy you see with brutal and rewarding combat.     Game looks amazing and the setting is good. The world is huge and filled with tons to explore. The main story is great and has lots of side quests. The combat is great and satisfying.
    Short: Story is the normal AC revenge kind of thing, but the Gameplay is almost perfect.
    Even shorter: everything you ahte about valhalla isnt in here, everything you love about it is, except for the settlement.
    I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.
    If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]
    It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
