Firstly Kassandra is fantastic, her voice acting is excellent and her character is fun and well written. When I had finished the game I even went back and did side missions just so I could see more of her. It is worth noting that Alexios is also an option but doesn't seem as well realised and lacks some of Kassandra's charm.

The game took me around 65 hrs to complete the multiple story threads (Family, Cult, Mercenaries and Atlantis) and I reached max level just before taking on the last cult members. I did not use any boosters and the microtransactions did not encroach on my enjoyment of the game at all. If you are willing to do a few side missions and want to finish the story you will have no problem avoiding paying for any boosters or gear.

Overall Odyssey is Origins in another setting and with a few new systems and improvements but It surprised me how much I ended up enjoying it.

This is not an assassin's creed. This RPG game about Spartans has nothing to do with the series.

If you played the first Assassin's Creed game, you've played them all. Ubisoft are just simply texture swapping and pumping out the same freaking game each year. This one has cool graphics sure, but nothing more than that. Don't waste your money and time on this game

This is (And I I can't stress this enough) not Assassin's Creed!

1- No hidden Blade ( could you imagine this ever to happen ?!)
2- No parkour, yet alone 3 buildings next to each other.
3- No social stealth, so forget the the phrase ''hide in plain sight''

They don't force them down your throat, and you don't have to purchase these extra items. The game is 100% enjoyable and can be completed without any boosts. The game gives you tons of rewards for defeating mercenaries, cultists, as well as the tons of exploration options. I'm sitting with 7 or 8 pieces of legendary gear in my inventory - and the game allows you to upgrade those good items so you can keep the gear you like the look of, you definitely don't need to put in your credit card to enjoy this game. That is a very over dramatic statement and people are over reacting. I feel like the people who are complaining about the game "shoving micro transactions in your face" are just not the sharpest tools in the shed and keep hitting the store button.

I'm playing the game on a 4k UHD TV/PS4 Pro and the game is absolutely stunning. There are a few wonky moments but when compared to a game like Fallout 4, the graphics have made leaps and bounds in just three years. The naval combat is fun as well. I'm about 20 hours in and not very far in the story because the game is so rich in exploration and side missions that are interesting. There is a lot to do in this game.

I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE OVERARCHING PLOT. the Animus was a cool sifi twist to the FIRST game, but after that i found that part of the games annoying and world breaking, the boiled unflavored veggies that came with a great steak dinner. i love and applaud the minimal use of it so far in this and origins. people say that Ubisoft sticks to a formula and i can't really argue that , but its a fun loop and it works, i mean how much has Halo really changed in 20 years (it hasn't). Ubisoft has done a great job of taking what works across their games and putting the into play here, for example, i love the option to limit the map notifications and makers, much like in farcry 5, this really adds to the immersion and feeling of exploration. Ultimately, here is the thing, i'm having FUN playing this game. reading through the negative reviews, all i see is people who don't want to like this game. this builds of what was great in Origins, if you enjoyed that game i'd wager you'ed like this one too. I've played about 25 hours so-far and never really felt like I was being hindered by the lack of EXP/Drachme boosts, maybe that will feel worse later but we'll see. So-far though the microtransactions feel completely optional.

In Origins I felt like the RPG mechanics were really hamfisted, I didn't like them at all. However in Odyssey they've really refined them to make them feel like a more natural part of the game. The eagle-bearer may well be one of the best written protagonists since Ezio, Kassandra especially is just exceptionally well written. She doesn't fall into any of the tropes that make a female protagonist feel forced, she feels completely human.

The choice system they put in doesn't seem frivolous either, there's one section early in the game that seems inconspicuous but can end up having a big effect on an an entire town. The game is **** chok full of little bits of detail as well, things you probably wouldn't even think of. IE the allies of the people you kill in the streets or whatever can be seen disposing of the dead, a town that can get sick because of your actions goes from healthy to morbidly sick, fatigued and vomiting to dead. It's great.

My only issue is that it doesn't feel like it has much connection to the franchise as a whole, but the game is honestly so much fun I don't really care.

So the only issues I really have is the abundance of microtransactions and the lack of a real connection to the franchise as a whole outside of the meta-story. Other than that, the game is fantastic and frankly all these hyper negative reviews are over-exaggerating like hell.

Good visuals, adequate combat system and a great representation of Ancient Greece. However, Ubisoft will never learn. While the main plot is decent this time around, the world is full of useless fetch quests and checklists(get this, kill that, clear that fortress etc) and the interesting side quests are very few. The map is too big for its own good. Not only it is filled with the same repetitive activities, but there are reused assets everywhere. See that nice temple over there? Now every temple you'll see for the rest of the game will be the exact same temple. Odyssey clearly favors quantity over quality,

And now to the really bad stuff - grinding and level scaling. Want to follow the main story? You can't because if you are one level below the required level(and believe me you'll be far below the required level if you didn't do any fetch quests) you have no hope to beat the mission because the level scaling is crap, the enemies are health sponges and they can kill you in 1-2 hits even if the level difference is 1-2 levels. The more you level up, the more difficult leveling up gets. If you wanna beat the main story, you gotta GRIND the endless fetch quests, no way around it. If you are one of those guys that likes to spend 100 hours on doing everything even if it's pointless and repetitive, then good for you man, you're gonna enjoy the endless grind. For the rest of us, thanks but no thanks. Let's move on to the microtransactions, shall we?

Microtransactions. The bane of modern gaming. You'll reach a point in Odyssey after 15-20 hours that you realize leveling up takes too much effort, and then, you'll remember that nice EXP booster you saw in the store "50% more exp permanently for 10 bucks". What a freaking deal? amirite? Sure, you don't need to buy it. That's what every fanboy and Ubisoft tells us. And I gotta agree, you don't have to, you can spent dozens of hours doing repetitive tasks and quests instead, so you can finish the main story and be done with the game, while in the same time wondering why you even bought this game in the first place. Did Ubisoft designed the game a certain way making it a bit too grindy as to tempt the players to buy their xp/gold/item packs? or not? I don't know. You don't know. But I gotta ask the question. It doesn't take a genius to realize that maybe that is indeed the case here.

Concluding, I can't give Odyssey higher than a 6. I can't really recommend this game except to those Ancient Greece enthusiasts, because this may be the best visual representation of Ancient Greece in any video game ever. Odyssey was fun the first 15-20 hours, then it got old fast and the grind basically killed the game for me. I believe that is the case for most people who wrote a negative review. I also hate microtransactions because they make me questioning the game design choices the devs made. Was it on purpose designed this way? or coincidence? I can't stop wondering. Anyway, in a 60 dollar game, these practices have no place.

I am not a fan of playing as female characters in games, but I have fallen in love with Kassandra. I really like her as a character. The combat is great as well and very fun, far better than it is in RDR2! Ubisoft have really hit the nail on the head with this game. Barring the odd glitch, it is perfect.

There is genuinely a lot of content and hours upon hours of gameplay built into the game. Easily the biggest game I have ever played. I have spent over 130 hours on Odyssey and I still have about 40% of the map left to explore, and I still haven't finished the main story/campaign yet either. I reckon it will take 200 hours to complete everything. There's just so much stuff. Tonnes of weapon, armour and customisations as well, so it is really, really in-depth.

I don't see how people can complain about it taking ages to level up, as I have already hit level 50 and I still have loads of the game left to do. If anything I have levelled up too quickly. Ultimately it is because of the size of the game and the amount of content that it takes so long. Some people don't want to put in the hours and want a quick fix to complete the game and unlock everything.

Either way, Ubisoft can't win - if the game is too small, or short, with little content, people will complain. When it is huge and packed with content and takes ages to complete, people still complain. I actually feel the need to defend Ubisoft here. At least we've been given that content and hours upon hours of gameplay. I would take that over a small game with hardly any content, every time. I guess there's no pleasing some people.

Well done Ubisoft! Origins and Odyssey are both in my top 3 games of all time...

At the end of the day, the progress through the story feels more like a grind than an adventure. The game itself is beautiful and at times comes close to being gratifying but falls short every time. This can be exemplified by how awesome it is just jump off synchronization points until you've done it 348 times because the map is too large and the quests are too disjointed. It's a chore to play through and the combat forces you into specific playstyles that are even then not-skill intensive.

And let me tell you, that is money WELL spend.

The game is absolutely massive and there is a lot of content here to keep you busy for HOURS> Yes, most of it is fighting and killing. But dude...which RPG is not ???
Speaking of which....I do not mind the depature from the classic Assassins creed formula. I find the RPG aspect to be very refreshing.

Although the new combat system "Works" I still kinda do really miss the old mechanic with the counter fighting as seen in AC3 and AC Syndicate/Blackflag (Which are my favorite in the series)
Those fights always look super flashy and movie like. The new fighting system is more traditional RPG and feels somewhat clunky and repetative at times.

I really went into this expecting it to be faaarrr worse than it actually is.
The gameplay is solid and entertaining. Exploring and following the locations in areas is very fun and satisfying.

Also, 1 aspect of this game I totally did not expect is that THIS game is 100% a looter game. You find new gear pieces everywhere, and chasing that legendary item to perfect your build is very sastisfying.

Some bad things too. Your gear is very reliable on your current level and upgrading that gear is just waayy to expensive. To give you and example. Most missions and objectives reward you with approximiatly 500-700 gold. To upgrade a legendary weapon to your current level can cost as much as 15.000 gold. (so yeah, thats insane)
Mind you that most missions dont really take a long time. But still, its a build in grind-mechanic that I just wish wasnt there.

    PROS:
    -Great evoirment
-Plenty of content here to keep you busy for HOURS
    -LOOT !!!
-Freedom to play as you want
-Story (Personally for me was entertaning)

    CONS:

    -Crafting
-Economy (most important things are just TOO expensive)

Of course, there is artistic liberty, like flaming swords, but there are a lot of details that are correct when it comes to the columns, the buildings, the weapons. Also the NPCs whose behaviour is in line with their actual behaviour (or attributed behaviour).

The game itself is a bit lengthy at times but I didn't have any issues in general with keeping up level by doing the entertaining side quests. Each location that I visited was full of new and nice surprises. Highlights were ancient Athens, the Minoan palaces, the rugged landscape around Sparta.

All in all scenery and setting and story are great in my opinion, some of the fights and quests are a bit lengthy and the controls could be improved somewhat.

Odyssey is visually stunning and the transitions from city to sea to country to cave really helps immerse you in the world of Ancient Greece.

The mechanics are familiar from Origins; they didn't try to re-invent the wheel here. It is more combat intensive, making it less "assassin-y" than any of its predecessors, but when you open the game fighting the Battle of Thermopylae as Leonidas, you quickly learn to look past that.

The controls themselves can be a little muddy at times...and it seems especially in tight scrapes. You want to get some distance between yourself and, say, three bounty hunters, but instead of leaping over a fence, you just jump on top of it (yeah, that happened more than once).

The story itself is well-plotted, and in the AC tradition, it cleverly involves several well-known historical figures into the narrative (Sokrates, Hippokrates, Perikles, Leonidas, and others). Your adventures pit you against Greek mythology's greatest monsters AND against a creepy secret society, and it's done in a satisfying (though overly long) way.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of choosing Kassandra as your hero at the beginning. The game's cover, etc, seems to point to Alexios as the player you're supposed to be, but no. While it doesn't actually matter (more on that in a moment), Melissanthi Mahut's voice work for Kassandra is immeasurably better and nuanced than Michael Antonakos's WAAAAY over-acted Alexios. The modern-day story component is almost useless anymore, and I think Ubisoft realizes it made a huge mistake with how they handled the Desmond storyline at the end of "AC III." But, you have to have an animus, so Layla Hassan returns to climb a couple of walls and check a few e-mails.

It's very easy to stop playing the main narrative and get lost in side quests (I love side-questing). I had nearly reached level 45 when I realized that I had a ton more of the actual STORY to play. It was at that moment where I realized that you can side quest forever in this game. There is no "cleaning up." There will always be more.

That's where I'll gripe a bit about the game. It IS too long. It's certainly a full world, but between endless mercenaries with awful, computer-generated nicknames (who are the most difficult enemies in the game, BTW - I was killed by mercenaries far more than any other foe), 15-minute fights against "legendary beasts" (a trope they didn't have to carry over from Origins - it's just a copy of those ridiculous elephant fights), silly side quests that almost always involve killing bandits or animals (you are a mercenary - or misthios - after all), and sinking ships on the Aegean Sea, Odyssey can be a quite "grindy" at times.

Also, outside of Kassandra (Sokrates and Myrinne are particularly good, also) the voice work is sub-average to poor. Many of the Greek accents seemed forced ("Hyow kyan I hyelp you?") and characters frequently emphasize the wrong words. Was no one in studio coaching them? Gah!

The engraving system doesn't really add too much to the game. Sure, it's nice to acquire a perk that lets you use less adrenaline to perform a special move or to increase your damage against animals (refer to legendary animals above), but I feel like something better could have been done there...not sure what, though.

I did NOT like that when went to play the game again, this time as Alexios, that all that happened was the programmers just dropped Alexios' avatar in the exact place where Kassandra's had been on my previous play-through. I think this game could have been something truly special had they found a way for you to play the game from one character's point of view, siding primarily with Sparta, and then from the other's POV fighting primarily for Athens. Interchanging the avatars really cheapened the story.

    Finally, that malakas farting pig...

Anyway, this game is, overall, great escapism and I hope that whatever Ubi's doing next for the series ties what we've seen here into what becomes the Assassins and Templars. And also which Assassin mated with which eagle to create offspring that allow humans to have eagle vision... OK, maybe I don't want to see that...

Similar look and mechanics as Origins, but the protagonist, the story, the side missions and in particular the historical setting are all far better. This game brings the best elements of Origins together with the best elements of Black Flag and plonks you into arguably the best historical setting of the entire series - a mercenary dropped right in the middle of the war between Sparta and Athens. Enormous, breathtakingly beautiful open world of Ancient Greece - untold hours of land, ocean and islands to explore, with compelling challenges sprinkled in with the missions. Everything that was a bit boring about Origins has been shaved off. No more boring dialogue. This is the first AC that's got me truly addicted since Black Flag. Addictvely awesome. Expand

It is a good game, and polishes upon what it did in Origins, if this was released when AC4 was released I would give it a 9 or 10, but the series just feels like they are beating a dead horse by now. The side stuff is rather solid, not as tedious as MMORPG stuff, but still a bit repetitive, they do have good introductions. There are more MMORPGish quests you pick up from bulletin boards though, but I managed to max level without doing a lot of these. There are some fun things to do like the mercenary stuff, good semi challenging fights. Some side quests have good storylines, and there are some good "boss" fights in a hunter and another legendary boss type challenge. I platinumed the game.

When I heard about Odyssey, I was interested due to the setting, but was also unsure If I would enjoy the game due to the combat being similar to Origins. Personally I was always a fan of the old combat system in the previous games. Unfortunately I was right, and I didn't enjoy the combat through my 300+ hours. I did finish the game and get the platinum trophy but I think that was more the completionist in me than my enjoyment in the game. I'm still not a fan of the combat, it just doesn't feel right to me, the story is alright, nothing really got me on the edge of my seat and there aren't any memorable moments. The only reason I think I did enjoy some of the story is because I'm a big fan of the era, otherwise the story would probably just bore me. The rpg elements are cool and a good turning point for the series but since none of the choices you make have much impact it all feels pointless. The world is huge but never felt lived in or interesting and unfortunately your not an assassin so no hidden blade. I think the game is in that middle ground, it's not bad but it's not great. I've finished the main story and there's nothing I can really say apart from it was alright to my friends. Expand

Graphics have never been better it's among few games of it's type to rival and in some cases out WOW you compared to the Witcher 3 . Story has it's good moments and the stealth options are more versatile compared to AC Origins, But there are a lot of negatives here.

First things you should do if you don't own the top of the line PC is to tone down the Cloud crap as you can't actually see it and even when it's not visible it makes heavy impact on performance, noticeable are poping of objects in scene bcs of some bad LODs and tessellation on some of textures (rocks on stair like vineyards). On ultra btw. Other bad thing here is that AA makes amazing textures blurry and you only have one AA mode.
As for the story it's way to dragged out by the size of the world , bigger is not better especially when quests and gameplay are so repetitive.
As for stealth option in it's RPG tree is the weakest of all as your F (assassinate) wont have the dmg to kill most of the things when you go deeper in the game. But detection range and the skills that help work around that are solid thou the last one should just buff the assassinate dmg not only at dark but in general as you need that if you want to play that path. Thou assassins did not exist at that time but you still do dmg with an artifact that should feel powerful in it's own!

Game has issues with grind if you dont keep your bounty between 2-3 and do some side quests you wont be able to progress in the story ! I had no issue like that as i did a lot of them early before i got sick of them.
Conversation option should not be in the game as it's game about history seams like they tried to pull to much from the Witcher I would be happier with more cut scenes then following the NPC to have one or two meaningless responses.

As for mercenary and naval i know that many say that was fun for them it was not for me they did not offer anything meaningful as a reward.

Another BS is that you have to hunt and gather like insane to upgrade your Legendary gear or it will become obsolete, and ''path'' to assassin dmg buffer one and archery are locked behind lv wall.

All in all solid but lacks a lot IMO smaller world of origins was better and more enjoyable this is a second entry into same style of gameplay they should have made better improvements and not add more unfinished options from other games that made those games great, current score that I see 5.1 is cutting it close to what this game is just above average.

I don't know how this game has enjoyed so much praise. It feels nothing like Assassin's Creed, for one. More like The Witcher 3: Greek Edition, except it's made by Disney, and it sucks. More like The Witcher 3: Greek Edition, except it's made by Disney, and it sucks. I say Disney because they throw historical accuracy and logic out the window in their quest to be inclusive. Whereas previous Assassin's Creed games have been slightly historically accurate, this game does not give a crap about how things actually were back then, which is immediately apparent when at the start of the game you're given the choice of playing a female warrior. Yeah, right.

The unfortunate thing about this is Kassandra is voiced better than Alexios, whose acting is just terrible, so if you want the best experience you're going to have to choose the female. I wouldn't have as much of a problem with all the historical inaccuracies if the game were actually fun. It's not. It's an exhaustingly giant world full of boring things to do, dotted with quests that give you the illusion of choice, and bad level scaling that makes you feel like everything you're doing is pointless. Just hit level 16? Great! So did all your enemies. Don't you feel so accomplished?

And then there's the animations, which are horrendous. Your attacks don't feel like they really connect, for one, and the kill animations are the worst of the series. Can't tell you how many times I laughed at the awful physics as bodies bounced off the floor during an assassination, or my spear didn't actually connect with a body during an impalement. There is nothing satisfying about the combat, and you'll do a ton of it.

Also, there's no longer any thought to climbing, and you can climb any surface regardless of whether or not there's something to grab onto. Previous games would make buildings little mini challenges as you tried to figure out the best way to scale them. Now, you just point forward and shoot to the top like a god. There is no sense of believability at all. You are Spider-Man.

I could go on and on. It's funny how this game was created by the same team as Syndicate, because that was my least favorite in the series up until now. I guess people in search of burning 100 hours of their life in the most mundane way possible will enjoy this, but I'd rather play The Witcher 3 again and enjoy actual quality content where choices matter and my immersion isn't destroyed every 5 seconds.

There was just enough of the Greek mythology sprinkled into the game while making sure to tie it all into the AC lore to make sense.

You can choose to ignore all the tedious side quests and power through the story, although a few of them are definitely worth pursuing. I recommend taking a quick look at a guide to see which ones, I don't want to spoil anything here. It was a lot of fun to play.

    COMBAT AND STEALTH
It has six different weapons and a bow. In the addition, also ship combat is good (but Black Flag is better of course). the enemies can be found some easy and some hard. Then, it cannot assassin everyone completely but it'll takes a lot of damage, thanks to the ability is helpful. Unfortunately, parkour is pretty easy for old AC gamers.

    GRAPHIC AND MAPS
The graphic is truly beautiful, thanks to Greek accident maps. In the addition, the maps is pretty bigger than I thought. I have spent 50 hours for beating about 50% of full completion. Have some bugs, of course for Ubisoft.

    VERDICT
It's worth to explore and combat. At the main point, if you think The Witcher 3 is still the best. I suggest you shouldn't have it.

I even saw some people on the reviews whics says Origins was a better game. Sure it was solid but nothing close this masterpiece. The gear system is awesome and wearing better armor while choosing it to like a another armor gives players to adjust how their character would look. For example lets say that you have a really good looking armor and you like wearing it. Then you find a stupid looking armor with great stats so you need to switch to that but hey it looks bad. No problem just set your cosmetic settings for once and wear whatever you want your character will look cool with any gear cause only stats will change. If you are bored use another style without losing any stats. So this approch to the game is lovely (something you lack at Origins) which lets you connect with your character better.

Sea Battles are fun and land combat is really enjoying. I saw some people complain about animations but oh boy the kill movements in this game is far beyond anything in series and best part is its not static because there are many skills and diffrent attack types combined with diffrent kills are all controlled by you. So if you want to go beserk just do it and you can feel like you are in a Leonidas in 300 or Achilles in Troy and pull out incredable movements during fights.

Story is also decent and really fun to follow. Its also very long so you wont end up finising the game in a couple of days. Graphics are incredable and the world design reflects ancient Greece well enough to make you feel you are actually there.

Lastly the Dlc's sold seperatly (or with season pass) are both well made and especially the Last Dlc about Atlantis is awesome which takes you to the places you cant even imagine.

As a person who is very careful on spending money on games (currecny rates) Its one the very few games which made me to buy the season pass because its worth it.

There is a lot to like about this game and there are some things to dislike about it. I liked about 90% of what the game had to offer. To name a few things such as the mythical beats, battling Medusa (the hardest boss battle I came across in the game), conquest battles, the addition of the spartan kick was great especially when you upgrade it, and taking down the cult members (I completed the main story mission with about 13 or so cult members left and I could not end the game without taking down the cult members) were some things I enjoyed amongst other things. However, for the 10% here is what I did not like:
    1) There was a lot of delayed textures as I am sure many players have experienced this.
    2) You have several abilities to choose from, but you can only choose 4 warrior/assassin abilities and 4 hunter abilities. To me this was kind of a disappointment as you are limited on what you can choose.
    3) Enemy AI is dumb.
    4) The game does get repetitive after awhile after doing countless side quests, taking down forts, camps, caves, ships, etc.

Overall, I was really satisfied with Odyssey and didn't think it would be this good due to it releasing a year after Origins as I thought they would have rushed it. The detailed story was hard for me to keep track of because they mention a lot of people with fancy names and I'm like who is that again and what did they do? With all of this being said I'm looking forward to see what the next Assassin's Creed game will bring us.

A fun experience that wanes a bit too quickly. The world is lovingly crafted, but the story/questing is jarring and lazy sometimes, and the levelling/progression mechanics are somewhat mediocre. This would be a good one to grab on sale.

Its an amazing game, best AC yet. Not sure why it’s not higher rated on here. Its a epic achievement for Ubisoft and I usually hate on AC games. Ive only liked AC2, Black Flag, and origins.

At first, the game will amaze you with the visual fidelity of everything. The detail is incredible, even the vast world doesn’t lose its beauty, this is a game that if you have a 4K tv with HDR you should at least rent it to see what the visuals can be. With that being said, it is visually appealing but there are issues that will make this game, not for everyone.

The graphics are one thing but another thing I felt a bit overwhelming was the sheer size of everything. Don’t get me wrong, having a vast open world is nice but here it just felt too big. There is too much to do and while some might consider that a plus, the issue is that the quests that you’re given just don’t feel that different enough. At first, it’s not too bad. It’s simple enough but after about 25 or so hours, it gets really repetitive with the same tasks, the main story missions end up feeling very similar and while there are a few good distractions and some of the side quests, while similar to the main story in term of how they’re put together and the tasks they do but some of them were entertaining.

The gameplay is fun but it gets old, due to the copy and paste nature of the missions. Pretty much it comes down to either, raiding a base, engaging in a skirmish or killing certain targets. There is some flexibility with how things are done and while I get it, it is an Assassin’s Creed game it just felt like there just wasn’t enough variety. The Witcher 3 this is not.

On PS4 pro it played fine, about 30 FPS without any major hiccups that I could see. Looks great in HDR and is truly a game worth getting if you love pretty graphics. On the other hand, there is a bit of loading when you first start the game. Nothing too bad. Less then a minute I think. After that, the game loads pretty briskly, there is brief loading when you talk to an NPC but it’s not a deal breaker at all. Sometimes the game glitches out. Textures won’t load sometimes and there is a bit of pop in. Sometimes the NPC’s you’re supposed to follow just don’t do what they’re supposed to do. That just requires a quick restart of the game. Annoying but not a huge problem.

The main issue is the pacing. The game is just too long for its own good. Realistically, it should’ve ended at the 20-hour mark and then keep it going with side content. The plot just drags on. It starts off fine enough, it’s interesting and until you get to about 20-25 hours in and then it just seems to drag its feet. Don’t get me wrong, it is an interesting story, but the pacing killed it. Throw that in with a lack of variety in the story and you pretty much see everything that there is by about 20 hours in. Another problem is it’s grind heavy. Even with the exp booster microtransaction and playing on Easy mode it becomes a grind fest. To grind the best way is to do side quests but they just become so boring and monotonous you probably won’t want to.

Due to the pacing issues with the main story and the grind-heavy nature of it and that you almost need to purchase a microtransaction just to have an edge in the grinding and even THEN it becomes very grind heavy and too repetitive I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. These things could easily be fixed in an update but right now? I don’t really recommend it. It could’ve been amazing but with some tweaks to the story’s structure, make grinding less of a chore and having more variety, it could’ve easily been one of the best historical RPG’s in recent years.

Is it horrible? No, and it does have an audience. If you tend to like your games to be a bit more structured and like your narratives to not drag on though, it’s not for you.

If you’re the type that only likes to buy a few games a year and wants a game that will last you and don’t mind repetitive missions and content, give it a go. It’ll probably be what you like.

Other than that, I personally didn’t like how much it dragged on, especially after the 20-hour mark.

They threw away Bayek, a great character, for Kassandra/Alexios badly acted characters that have no actual personality. I would not reccomend this game. It does everything to try to make you buy microtransactions, which don't belong in single player games. The game gives you so little XP for quests further contributing to the feeling of grind. The game is a chore to get throught and at the end the game doesn't even have a satysfying ending no matter which choices you pick(not like they even have any real effect). I would reccomend to stay far away from this game, as it really isn't fun to play. Expand

The bland locations, where you go only because it is marker on the map with possible loot and xp which you need both to grind in between story parts to be able to keep up with escalating level of enemies, was just dull and incredible boring. I honestly couldn't squeeze an ounce of joy out of it.
I might come to it back during Christmas and give it one more try, but after the 40 hours, the game didn't show me anything worth remembering and I have a feeling that after a year or two, I won't recall much more than it was in ancient Greece. And that's coming from a person who's gone through all previous instalments with platinum trophy.

Then there's the bugs. I play on a ps4 pro. I should not see severe game stuttering. I should not see 30 second load times. The world shouldn't have to rebuild after using Ikaros. I should not have to reboot the game because I can't use the torch anyone for some reason. I don't know what happened, the whole thing feels rushed. I absolutely loathe this game, and this is coming from someone who adored the previous entry, Assassin's Creed Origin. Whereas certain improvements were made in this installment, ultimately Greece is a step down from Egypt.

Presentation: While the texture work is fine, the water effects are stunning, and the draw distance is a sight to behold, it's difficult to shake the feeling that the environments seem to be copy and pasted. From grasslands to indistinguishable cities, there is never a sense of the regional diversity which characterized Origins so well. It's always seemingly dense forests with the same classical Greek style marble buildings with mosaic flooring. These were far and away the least interesting section of Egypt in Origins. Memphis had narrow sandy pathways that interject with water canals and in the distance is the gorgeously rendered Temple of Isis. Nothing was notable about Greece's environments other than the Aegean Sea.

Gameplay: This is also a massive step down. In Origins, if enemy types difficulty level was parallel to your ranking, they can be taken out in three or four strikes. In Odyssey it can take upwards to ten strikes due to the expanded RPG mechanics. Furthermore animations and combat are unbearably stiff, more so than Origins. The new bounty system which procedurally generates new bounty hunters made the once exciting encounters with Phylakes into laborious chores where, if contending with an enemy camp and caught, five bounty hunters come out of thin air to make an already tedious combat system borderline unbearable. On the plus side the spartan kick is amusing and ship to ship combat is exciting.

Story: Conceptually the story is rather decent, especially when the central antagonist is unveiled. The central problem lies in presentation. The voice acting is abysmal, the animations are universally laughable. Compared to the Witcher 3 which balances algorithmic dialogue sequences with handcrafted motion captured sequences, mostly everything in Assassin's Creed Odyssey's presentation is unremarkable and dull.

Leveling: Far and away the worst issue plaguing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, leveling up in this game requires players to complete as many side quests as possible in order to push the central story forward. What's worse is that players can buy XP points with real money in order to allow players to "skip the grind". This design decision was intentional and it's there for the sole purpose of extorting as much money from it's player base as possible. It's an insidious practice that deserves culpability from the larger community.

Overall, this is a mediocre game in an otherwise excellent year for gaming.

Although the game is several months old, it has been hit with a lot of negativity recently so I feel compelled to give a positive note for a change. Why? Because in and of itself, AC Odyssey is not a bad game. Every game has room for improvement of course, but the main complaint: paying for micro-transactions or need to grind is in my opinion over the top.

I've played this game for some time now, and not for a moment did I have the feeling that I needed to grind to level. What might set me apart from most reviewers is that this is the first AC game I've ever played. Maybe the game doesn't fit enough in the AC brand and divert from the previous games. I don't know, and honestly, I don't care. Like I said, in and of itself, the game is not bad.

To sum up the things I liked most: beautiful graphics, which even on my not top notch GTX1060 run fluent almost the entire time. An interesting and motivating main quest line, with enough fun side quests to keep me from boredom. A plethora of items and interaction, including quite realistic horse riding (contrary to vertical movement in Skyrim for example) and controlling several kinds of boats up to your own galley.

Conclusion: good immersion, good quests, good graphics and not a single urge to pay Ubisoft an extra cent to speed up the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, firstly: This is an overall okay game with a great world, environments and (except for jittering faces) pristine graphics. But it could've been a LOT better and after 60hrs of play I can't feel but left disappointed by the lazy writing.

Ubisoft, you wasted a lot of potential. You should have decided to either go full AC or keep that stuff out of a historical/mythical RPG. Either way, you would've earned a lot of money. It just doesn't mesh well.

Note: I personally didn't like the "typical" previous AC games but that's just preference.

Let me start off with the positive aspects:

. Like I said, the environment is really stunning. The architecture, towns, landscape. The water animation is the best I've seen in games.
. The richness and vastness of the world
. Barnabas, Sokrates, Brasidas, Herodotus and Phoibe and Kassandra are standing out as personalities above all and carry the game experience for me as far as characters go
. Some of the side quests are actually really interesting, especially the Mykonos storyline!

    Now...the negative aspects:

. Above all, the main storyline. You set out to find your family which is interesting enough at the start, but once you find your mother, it's all about Deimos/Alexios. And let me tell you - he is a horribly designed protagonist and incredibly stupid. He is a willing, brainless puppet for the Cult (only talking about being "their strongest champion") and your mother is only concerned about getting him back.
In the good ending, you do, after he wants to kill you he quickly changes his mind once he sees your spear. W-T-F. Were the creative directors high when they wrote that? This ending actually felt so terrible, overly cheesy, unbelievable and wrong.

. The present day story breaks you out of the immersion at the worst timings, along with a heavily annoying and unlikeable character called Layla and her boring and stiff doctor friend. Ubisoft would've been better off making this a purely historical / mystical game a la Witcher and not lean it on AC. But I guess they didn't have the guts to deviate from their moneymaker.

Once you find your "real father" as Kassandra (never gets explained how he possibly could be your father since he seems to stay in that cave since he found it, plothole alert) and Atlantis, it goes steeply downhill from there...the writing literally couldn't be worse. I was so disappointed from what I've got after I brought the artifacts back.

. The grinding for resources and gold to upgrade your legendary gear constantly is reminding me of the grind of MMOs. I've been playing a lot of RPGs and MMOs as well and this is...just bad.

. The level gap in between main story quests or Cult members literally forces you to do level grinding on the side, and a lot of it. The worst part of this is that it gets super repetitive, not like in the Witcher where side quests were a joy to do - apart from that, the level gaps were not that bad and it felt really fluent in other games. Or you go buy their "micro" transactions (which are super expensive), and even I ended up getting a gold boost because I was getting so annoyed at the constant upgrading costs. I'm okay with micro transactions if a game is great, but the cost along with the grind of resources and level gaps were too much for me to cut Ubisoft some slack.

. The repetitive quests like clearing out forts, clearing bandit camps etc etc. You will get sick of it, believe me. It wouldn't have harmed to put mystical creatures earlier on in the game, since that was honestly the most fun and challenging part! (Sphinx & Co.)

. You could make choices, but it didn't really seem to have a big impact overall. There was no way of really shaping your surroundings. There was a lot of violence in game - yet all romances were pretty boring and censored. The one on Mykonos was great as a story, but after you left and came back it was like nothing happened.

So overall a 6.5, I just can't give in between ratings.
This could've been an EPIC game with more effort; better writing and storytelling, more variety in combat/enemies, more characters that leave an impression (and a more likeable Layla if you want to keep her so bad), less of the present day nonsense - and cutting out a lot of the grinding and filler content. Shorter but sweeter is most of the time better.

Akes everything about Origins and improves it by all means and I love the naval combat. Good story, something definitely new and out of the Assassin's Creed legacy. The RPG elements are fantastic. Out of all

A masterpiece! One of the best games of 2018! And definitely, the best Assassin's Creed game yet!

It is not assassin’s creed!!! I enjoyed playing Altair and Ezio’s games and even Unity! But Odyssey is very bad! SJW trash! The fighting system in game is like in Korean MMo - rpg! You can’t kill the NPC with higher level...omg

I created an account just to give this game 10 stars. If you include all of the DLC, this is my favorite single player Xbox game of all time, and I have been around a long time. The game builds you from a common mercenary to a true god of war. The combat is dynamic, the story compelling, and the RPG format keeps you building your narrative and gear set. While I expect the next installment to revert back to more assassin driven/subtle play, a return to this type of grandiose gladiatorial combat would be nothing short of a dream come true. At a minimum this game deserves its own spin offs to continue the format. It does not get any bigger than this game. Expand

As a huge fan of stealth games, this one is the most addicting. I played this for more hours than I'm happy to admit and absolutely loved it. The story and side missions definitely get repetitive and repurposed but the RPG options are endless. The DLC was great as well.

This is my first review in this site. I usually read reviews. However, I see many negative reviews which is interesting because I really like this game. This game is amazing. This definitley one game you need in your collection. It has action, fighting, puzzles and very good story, the game play is right on point and the controls follow as well. The Assassin's Creed collection has gone through numerous story's and times in the past, and with every game the improvement is shown. Looking forward to the next installment! Must have!

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
