Why are people doing this? Many people are still bitter about Starfield not coming out on PlayStation and they love to see things fail. It’s petty and predictable. The mid reviews are probably mostly legit. Among these are veteran gamers that expect amazing things from new games. These people generally have a very critical eye and see flaws before fun. That’s fine and I totally understand where they’re coming from. That being said, many had the wrong expectations like expecting a fully fledged space sim, which this was never promised to be. Another criticism are the loading screens (which are mere seconds by the way), which for anyone actually familiar with creation engine games knows is standard. I wonder how people can claim to have loved Skyrim and the Fallouts and then act like they are surprised and annoyed about this. The great reviews are from those that are genuinely having fun with the game. They’re from those who always loved Bethesda RPGs by and had healthy expectations for the game. 10/10 doesn’t mean perfect, but it does mean that people are having a 10/10 experience. My advice to anyone who wants to enjoy this: Enjoy it for exactly what it is: A highly polished Bethesda RPG set in space with a solid story, fun side quests and great activities. Immerse yourself in the world and leave your 2023 cynicism behind. Games are about escapism. Have fun!

    -------------------------

Starfield is the most ambitious RPG that Bethesda has ever produced. Even the most ambitious one that anyone has ever produced. It is not a space sim. If you are looking for such an experience, Starfield is not a good choice. It is an action RPG in the Bethesda formula, as we know it from the games of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series: Large, immersive simulated game worlds that captivate the player with their liveliness, action-packed combat, countless questlines and NPCs with their own stories and the environmental storytelling typical for Bethesda. The world overwhelms you at first with its size and the impressions you get from places, NPCs and number and variety of tasks you can receive. But don’t worry. You will find your way around quickly without the game constantly holding your hand.

The graphics are very beautiful, colorful and varied, but do not aim for photorealism, but rather remind of the futuristic illustrations from science fiction and space travel, as they were popular in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century on both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The soundtrack is always fitting and just epic. It more than does justice to the theme, the size of the game world and the immense dimensions of outer space.

For me, Starfield is the game of the generation and a purchase that is more than worth the price. Mod support and announced DLCs will keep this game alive for a decade or two and provide incredible replayability.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Currently, I am 40 hours in and completed maybe 5 main quests. I am on my way to becoming a Freestar Ranger. The game sucks you in, just like any other Bethesda game. It is very good at distracting you, especially when you avoid fast traveling.
This part of the game is a 9!
The things Starfield does really well are the Quests, the world building - every city is different and feels like a small world, the ship and outpost building, and the companions are so much better than in Fallout 4 and I actually care about them, Space combat is super fun as soon as you level your ship.

    This part is a 5!
But there are things that definitely need to be better. The maps are horrible, the UI is bad, and the optimization for lower-end PCs is bad. I am not affected by that, but I empathise with the players affected. They should use a different engine for their games.

Another thing I have to address are claims and criticisms about the game, that are not really honest.

    1. The planets are lifeless and boring: Yes, that was intended and said the whole time. Howard said a year ago on Lex Friedman, that most planets will be lifeless, just like in real life.

    2. The life on the planets is always the same: That is just not true. I am 40 hours in and yet have not seen animals double.

    3. Space travel is not seeming less, NMS already did this nearly ten years ago, so why can't they do it?:
First of all. That, also, was clear a long time ago. Every player who read a bit about Starfield knew, that you can't manually land in Starfield. Now the travel between planets is so big, that it would take days to travel manually. That is pretty realistic, but nobody would do that, and it shows how absurd this point is.

Now to the point of comparing it to NMS:
Pretty easy, NMS does not have a lot of story, objects, in general, handcrafted content the player can interact with. The planets are pretty impressively generated procedurally. But as a long-time NMS player, the planets in NMS have no biomes, not a lot of diversity, and are mostly also pretty empty. Starfield has much more to focus on than the planet generation, which is still pretty good. The planets look amazing and the systems they are in also.

The criticism confuses me sometimes. The game gets criticized for being not realistic enough and it is not the real world just different boxes xyz, but when it does something realistic, like empty planets or huge space in actual space, then it's boring.

So all in all. I really like the game. It has major flaws I pointed out that should be fixed. But then again, Bethesda is the only one who does games this big and this good. Starfield will be a 100+ hour game for me and for you if you like Bethesda games.

Beautiful graphics, very good gameplay including shooting mechanics: weapons details are very nice, I loved the digital counters, the scenarios color pallets can be weird for some.

The first planet won´t be breathtaking but it shows the potential of the engine chosen for the game.

The spaceship first encounter is ok for people that played StarWars games but nothing new or revolutionary but it does its job.

Music and effects are very good, you clearly see their investment in that area, but that the other ones does not have it, but that(using headphones) just shines since the very start of the game.

This is a game that, if you want to enjoy its full potential and the view of its creators, you need to take your time into it. It is a RPG, not a shooter, even though it has its elements, but it keeps following the Bethesda RPG formula.

In short, take your time to play it, enjoy, do not rush, chat a lot with the NPCS, confront some pirates and other evil or not characters(depending of your choices you can be the enemy!) and explore and discover other life forms and, if you have the time, build your own base and customize your ship.

    Over and out.

My only gripe so far is some loading screens seem unnecessary, like going into small shops within the city or loading into a tiny cave from the surface of a planet. I hope they are able to procedurally generate those in the future without having to load in even though it's literally a 1.5 second black screen. This is a wonderful Bethesda RPG, and one of the most engaging, cinematic experiences ever produced. Pick it up for yourself and see what I mean.

Big cities like New Atlantis, Neon and Akila have more side quests and stories than the main quest itself, and that's amazing. The battle system is very good, I believe thanks to the Doom team. The inventory and skills menu is very easy and simple to use. The map is complex and takes time to get used to. Optimization isn't good, the engine doesn't make things fluid as it should. The indoors and landscapes of the planets are beautiful, but the NPCs are ugly (except named characters). The game deserves 9 because it is not easy to create such a vast and rich universe. In my opinion, it delivers what it promises. Expand

It does feel like this game was probably meant for 2019-2020 and the scale was just too difficult to deliver on, especially with the pandemic interrupting productivity. Starfield is an invite to explore, do quests or build, how you want it, when you want it. The formula works very well, but the engine and UI still need some teaks. If you are willing to use mods, you can improve the game by yourself.

I am sure if you are a bethesda loving person this game will scratch the itch. It is the ultimate example of going for quantity over quality. Also weirdly upset with the lack of Jank, it added so much heart to the bethesda game and without it something is definitely missing.

Space flight is not really there, you get involved In the odd dogfight but it’s basically just fast travel from one place to another. Combat is spongy but I’m having fun with it. I’ve modded it a bit to increases scanner efficiency and increased my carry weight as if it lets me carry half a dozen spacesuits and half a dozen guns it’s already being ridiculous so I’m making sure I can stock up on resources before I start using up all my oxygen from effort. - Most people that actually gave Starfield a decent chance and played it for a good amount of time love it.
If you check Steam you’ll see most reviews are positive. These are people that actually played the game.
It's not perfect. There are some technical aspects that could have been avoided. The lack of DLSS, HDR not working as expected and it's a demanding game. But all these are minor issues. Baldur's Gate 3 suffers from more pronounced framerate issues specially on Act 3 and that hasn't resulted in many negative reviews. Starfield runs better on my PC than BG3. Baldur's Gate 3 also has loading between exteriors and interiors but for some reason, in that style of game it's not a problem. Why this double standard?
There is a real issue with social media these days. Some people think it's cool to hate the big studio and its cool to support the rising star. So Larian Studios has been in the community good grace since the Divinity Original Sin days and now Bethesda is awful. People expected Starfield to be a game filled with bugs before it even came out. The reality is that it's one of the most if not the most stable release Bethesda ever made. CD Projekt Red faced the same ups and downs. Hero one day, villain the next. People seem to be losing objectivity and just following the herd.
So, without getting into spoilers these are the type of things you can expect from Starfield:

Starfield much like past Bethesda games, other MMOs and survival games, it starts slow. But as you explore the universe you start to find things that really show why Bethesda is so well known for creating open world RPGs. But you won’t realize it if you just play the game for a couple of hours. If you start from a skeptical position and are not open to immerse into the Starfield universe you will dismiss the game before the game can reward you with some of the best features, quests and other content.
    - Understand what you are getting into. This is a game where you can find quests everywhere.
With several major quest lines that cover different sci-fi flavors. From Firefly, to Cyberpunk style places, to Interstellar. You can build your own spaceships. Fully mod your armor, weapons. Have multiple bases.
You will find places in space where you will be exploring in Zero G. Despite not being a space sim focused game, you will be surprised by some of the events that will happen to you as you fly around. Space combat is indeed challenging and fun. It is not a full space sim but it is enough to give you that feeling.
The “dungeons” vary from caves, industrial complexes, Doom style sci-fi bases as well as starbases of all kinds and other ”places” I will not disclose to avoid spoilers. They are diverse and fun to explore. FPS combat is challenging and fun and as you unlock more skills and get better weapons it becomes more and more addicting.
Not everything is perfect but the game is stable, mostly bug free.
Is it a perfect game? No. But it does give you the feeling that you are exploring different worlds. Finding interesting things. The huge number of quests and interesting places to visit really immerse you as you progress.
Personally, what I love the most is that the universe feels alive with a lot of fun activities combining elements from other games. I can explore a planet and get some of the aspects of No Man's Sky, but then I find a pirate base and have truly fun combat experience. Afterwards I go to a major city and interact with dozens of interesting characters that give me missions and goals. Other scifi games have their advantages but none combine so many elements into one package with a AAA feel.
So this is Starfield. Skyrim in Space.
This is the best open world space themed scifi RPG right now. If you think there is a better alternative please, share. Outer Worlds? No this one is better, bigger in every way. Star Citizen? Unfinished. No Man's Sky? It's a pure survival/exploration game. Not a AAA style RPG. Cyberpunk? Not set in space. No ships, bases and other exploration related content. Everspace 2? Space focused. No ground exploration.
Starfield is the only AAA game that combines elements made popular in several space theme scifi games into a package. It's not perfect but it's the best right now.
And with modding support, space has no limits.

Overall I'd say that I enjoyed it for the most part, but it wasn't the masterpiece I was hoping it would be. For me the biggest problem was the performance, I had a ton of stuttering and like everybody else a lower than ideal level of performance. Technical problems always kill games for me and Starfield was no different. I found the game actually started to perform worse the further I got, the frequency of stutters definitely increased. I really hope that both Nvidia and Bethesda can improve the situation, and if they do I'd be tempted to play NG+.

My other major issue was the story, it just wasn't very interesting and I honestly didn't care about the characters, apart from one. And the big reveal at the end literally made me groan, let's just say it wasn't very original. I played Baldur's Gate III before Starfield and I was so invested into that world and the characters, it's what made that game so incredible and Starfield just never comes close to that level of storytelling or character building. I really tried to not compare it to BG3 going in, but with it so fresh in my mind it was hard not to.

Other smaller gripes include the sheer amount of loading screens, how irrelevant mining and gathering is, how the majority of the planets feel completely empty as they often have no life on them, and the landmarks become familiar very fast. The UI is another sore spot, for so many reasons, why can't I eat food instead of having to loot it, open multiple menus and then eat it? The game is filled with stuff like that, little QoL features that are missing which makes for a poor experience.

On the more positive side I really enjoyed the combat, it's by far the best combat Bethesda have ever pulled off. The variety of weapons was incredible and they all felt different and punchy, with solid sound effects. It was nice to see that enemies react to being shot, although there was definitely some Bethesda jank with enemies standing still behind corners or instantly running away, the AI definitely brought the gameplay down a notch, but I still enjoyed it. The overall feel to the movement was also a high point, and again a big step up from what Bethesda usually manages. I also enjoyed the voice acting, I found it to be very high quality throughout, and I had no issue with the lip syncing or facial animations, they were more than fine IMO.

I could see myself playing NG+ in the future, but the game needs a lot of patching before I do that.

Where Starfield excels is in the immersive exploring on the planets. No it’s not seamless and you can’t manually land but personally I find that a good thing. Once you’ve done a boring arcadish landing once you are going to fast travel. It’s the side quests and exploring that makes this a great game.

While there is an interesting foundation of a game developed by Bethesda game studios, ultimately it falls short in a myriad of ways. What sticks out in this falling short is UI and quest design. You could fly to a planet and the only quest on it is following around a dude giving a museum tour. No need to make an entire planet for just that.

You can fly to a planet to drop off medical supplies, and then the ceo of a resort wants you to turn settlers into slaves or to kill them completely, and promises you money in return, but you don't get the option to give the CEO a taste of his own medicine. You have to get rid of the settlers one way or another, in a very bland yet long quest. And the CEO doesn't even give you a reward. You realize you shouldn't have explored this planet, you should have dropped off your cargo and peaced it.

As far as the UI goes, this is the worst UI bethesda made to date. and that's saying something. the pipboy at least made logical sense when you used it. Starfield has menus in menus in menus in menus and when you try to back out and start over, you are sent to another menu you didn't even open. It is so bad. And it's all ugly with poorly used space. UI is something I can usually ignore. Whatever, just play with what the devs give me. But I've gotten frustrated so many times trying to navigate a laggy menu system that isn't intuitive at all starfield presents the user.

a minor issue is weight of resources and their necessity. There are so many items you actually need to improve your gear and such, but they all weigh a ton, and you don't have much space to keep it. always my least favorite part of the newer bethesda games. And it's getting worse, not better.

I don't want to take away completely from this game, as when you are free to do what you want, instead of navigating the menu, or being stuck with the one option for solving a quest, it is actually quite fun. The illusion of freedom is nice, until the game hits you in the face with the reality of being incredibly boxed in, even with 1000 planets.

Can't say I regret spending 10 dollars to rent this game for a month. But let's just say it is a good thing there is more than one game on game pass.

This sad part is; this is probably going to be Bethesda's best game moving forward. Like they'll never match oblivion, or new vegas ever again, they won't even reach starfield quality ever again. it's all downhill, it seems.

So this is my honest opinion of the game.

Judging by mixed review scores it's fair to say it's an either take it or leave it game. I'm not the biggest rpg gamer but i put a lot of hours into Skyrim and Fallout 4 and absolutely loved both. I don't usually buy premium editions of anything but I did with this. Why? No idea just impulse and the fact that on Steam it would be fully moddable.

So what do I think of the game? Absolutely loving it. Theres just so much to do. I've got 60+ hours now and I have no idea whether I'm near end game or not. At first controlling the spaceship was hilariously bad but now it's clicked and dogfights vs multiple ships feels like I know what I'm dong here now. Gunfights are good with multiple weapons. It really is one of those games where you think I'll play for an hour or two and before you know it double or triple that has gone and you haven't really done anything.
    - 1 point for the menu system which is far to confusing for it's own good and not very well optimised (yet).

Bugs - Only encountered a few but they usually just make you laugh in a Bethesda way. What other RPG can you put a bucket on someone's head? That's a win for me.

Edit the women are pig ugly. Fixable with mods so not an issue.

Going in, if you hold expectations that it is going to be a bethesda game, it'll be fine. Think Fallout in space, same systems from their other franchises, but in space. Pretty cool and refreshing to see something new come from bethesda.

The main complaint I have is with the writing. While the overall story is compelling enough, and some of the side-missions are very nearly brilliant, dialogue can be clunky or even cringe-worthy, perhaps most especially with companions who are part of Constellation. They're all so . . . bland and nice, and are prone to gush awkwardly over how awesome it is to be with the main character.

(Perhaps they took inspiration from the Adoring Fan?)

    I would rate Starfield 8/10.

Against popular belief this game is the best Bethesda game and space exploration game to date.

It's huge with so much content, that its hard to believe. The planets aren't empty. I played recently 30+ hours just on random planets, not touching any of the hundreds handwritten quests and side quests and in all that time I found 3-4 similar outposts with minor changes (loot, enemies, objects positions) and 2 times the same quest in which I need to protect different settlers from a pirate thread in the orbit. Other than that I saw many dozens of points of interest which were diverse, intersting and had story attached to it. No other space exploration game does that. And this game also has a full campaign and an incredible amount of side quests. The RPG elements actually make sense, the factions are actually changing the course the story goes for you, way better than in older Bethesda games. The graphics look amazing.

The bad you ask? There is some, but they don't change the rating in my opinion:

    - The AI. Yeah, the NPCs still act funny, weird and foremost uncanny like in all Bethesda games. I would say at this point its part of the brand. It creates lots of funny moments. And this is not a competitve shooter.

    - There are no or not many randomly generated dungeons. But this was never the case in a Bethesda RPG before. It would be cool though.

    - There is no manual space travel. Yes, you can not manually enter the atmosphere to travel to another planet. It's always a cut scene. I think some people think thats a huge deal and I was one of them until I saw it in action and thought about it. It wasn't a huge deal in Mass Effect and seriously, space travel in space games is usually just looking at the screen while using some super speed drive and/or time compression. Thats marginally different from a cinematic. What I miss here at all is flying through the atmosphere to find a cool place to land. That would be cool, but real space ships cant do this either, so maybe its just realistic, that you cant use the ship as a airplane.

Overall I'm blown away from this game. It's huge, it's the technically cleanest Bethesda game that got ever released and it's so much fun. I'm at 60 hours now and it feels like a barely scratched the surface, the main campaign is only at the third quest, I have a quest log thats huge, I barely saw any repetition on planet exploration and still finding new handwritten locations and side quests in such frequency even in random exploration, that I tend to decline them. I see myself logging hundreds of hours in this game.

Despite its flaws this is still an great game. It's very close to the dream Bethesda rpg for me and once modding is in full swing it will be even better. Sorry ps5 losers, it's a good game.

I've had minimal bugs, none which hindered my progress. My biggest complaints are that the melee combat and stealth is terrible. I think its a sign of a poorly written review if you start with "game was fun, but..." and then proceed to give a game a 0 score. A 0 score means it wasn't fun AND it was unplayable. This game is divisive as I thought it would be, but the amount of "0" scores I see reflect how narrow minded and shallow people are. I enjoyed it and I think if you like space, open world, BGS games, then you will also like this title. Expand

Been playing for 4-5 hours of the game so far. The game started really slow. There is nothing exciting in the beginning 4-5 hours of the game. I think you must take a long time to enjoy it. But since I don't have that much of time, I shall drop this game for awhile and will be back again when I play it full.

Starfield is the best role-playing game Bethesda has ever developed. It's triple-A level No Man's Sky mixed with Fallout 5, Cyberpunk 2077 and a lot of Mass Effect. It does a lot right, but still won't make everyone happy.

It's been years since I've had so much fun with a game. Not sure why so many people are giving it a low review. The game is pretty much Fallout 4 meets Mass Effect, but with much improved combat. The biggest improvement is combat which feels very fluid and smooth. The guns are fun to use with interesting modification options. Story-wise the game is good and the companions are a much appreciated improvement over Bethesda's previous companions, although after playing Baldur's Gate 3 for 150 hours in August, I feel there's still a lot to be desired here. The actual space combat, spaceships, and spaceship designer are really cool. However, they tie directly to the biggest issue with this game that quite simply can't be fixed.

The biggest reason this game isn't actually great is because of the switch from an open world to what can only be described as a fast travel simulator. The procedurally generated, hand-crafted content hybrid system works great for what it is. But I feel like this system should have been supplementary, not the core focus of the game. If there were a few planets with huge zones that were as big as Skyrim with their own sets of lore and, more importantly, much better content density, then this procedural tile system would feel like a massive improvement over traditional Bethesda filler quests from previous titles, i.e. respawning bandit bounties from a Hold in Skyrim. But that's not the purpose it serves, it's supposed to totally replace the hand-crafted, content-rich, open world aspect of Bethesda games and it simply falls way short.

The engine feels great, the graphics are good, the voice acting and writing is good, I have little to complain about with the game, but the direction away from an open world in favor of this tile generation system was simply a bad one, despite that system functioning well. It's just not a good design direction. This game will likely be made great by mods, but as it stands, it's just pretty good. If you're a Bethesda fan, pick it up now. If not, buy it on sale, it's worth like $40.

I am very glad that Bethesda has become part of XBOX and will create such wonderful exclusives, just like the main team of XBOX Game Studios, the best games were, are and will only be on XBOX, this year we will also have Forza Motorsport, and HI has already been released -Fi Rush, now we will enjoy the Star Field, thank you XBOX, thank you Todd!

Again a good hit from Bethesda. Funny after Microsoft released with Bioware the first Mass Effect, they now release the first Starfield being Mass Effect++ with probably a less appealing narration but still quite interesting for a first shot from Bethesda.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
