    I regret that impulsive decision.

Take it from a 5 year veteran of Eve: Online this game is BORING.
Imagine Eve minus the hordes of players trying to kill you, it's more boring than that.

There is supposed to be septillions of stars and planets generated, but their algorithm is poor. This results in maybe 12 different planet types and 30 animal species. I'm being very generous with the planets, for the most part they are just different colors with a different icon showing you what is killing you today.

Now I wasn't expecting Spore like creature variety, but this is insulting. All of them look the same. There might be some slight variation between the crab like species trying to kill me, but I honestly couldn't tell.

The entire game is far too easy, in my trek from the start to the center of the galaxy my shields dropped a total of maybe 10 times, I still don't know what the death screen looks like.

The interface is utterly terrible. You have to hold to click EVERYTHING. There I cannot fathom a reason this has to be for literally EVERYTHING. The galaxy map is the single worst aspect of the UI, a rather galaring flaw for something that wants to do space exploration. The path to the center is utterly useless, as I got close to the center it literally got stuck in a dead end. It ignores your hyperdrive upgrades meaning it's course will take you through about a dozen short hops and then abruptly stop, while you can reach the end in one jump or infact go much futher. There is a total disconnect between "Distance from Center" and "Linear Distance", 500ly for the former is about 1,500ly for the latter. You are down to luck for finding any particular location, even ones you've visited before.

The game play is more or less a resource grind, you land on a planet, shoot at a rock with a mining laser, you leave the planet to go shoot at a different rock. There are NPC, they are of three races, all of which just stand or sit alone in one place. They never do anything, you can talk to them and maybe get a blue print or something, but thats it, there is no personality, not even real interaction.

There was an Atlas quest line, that brought you to 10 admittedly rather spiffy looking space stations. Actually I lied, there are 4 rather spiffy looking space stations that are repeated a couple of times in no particular order. It starts no where and ends in a non ending. This may last you a couple of hours (or however long it takes you to realize the map system is trash and just jump to the end). But it pales in comparison to reaching the Galactic Center.

Thats the final insult, what happens at the center. I'll rant in a spoilerific manner after the next paragraph. Suffice to say if we reached the center and had a planet sized MIDDLE FINGER to explore, this would still be less of a **** YOU than what we got. Because at least the Flipping Bird of God would be an object of interest and discussion.

It was after I had played for a while that I went out and watched the trailers, holy **** I wanted to play that game, too bad it's not what I bought. I'm angry I wasted money buying this, I would have been furious if my expectations were that high. This isn't a case of a fandom hyping in a vacuum, the developers were outright lying to us. Not just in the trailers, but in the words they were speaking. **** this game.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

You start jumping to the center, the game silently says "nope", plays prog rock as it holds the scroll backwards button on the map screen, fade to black and dumps you at the start of a new practically identical galaxy with all you stuff broken. I think it might even have gotten the color on my ship wrong. I can't tell because my game bugged out and put me in slow mo, and I was already fighting the urge to just toss my computer out a window. So no, you don't even get to see what is so shiny at the center of the universe, you just start over again.

    Seriously **** this game.

Didn't deliver on multiple promises and lacks any sort of gameplay. As an artsy game it does wonders but only if you want to call it a game. If you take away the game title and call it an experience it would be much better. Game felt more like a VR experience trying to be a game, it doesn't hit any standard for gameplay

Had to change the resolution (and put up with black bars. BLACK BARS!) and lower the graphics to low. And even then, after I got out of the ship for the first time, the game realized it hadn't buggered up and crashed.

Steam refunds could not have been implemented earlier. Thank goodness for those. I just gave it a 2 because at least Hello tried to make some decent features like an FOV slider and somewhat responsive controls (though I didn't get far enough to start shooting those grinding sentinels)

I'll say again: Hello Games, I have 18 quadrillion other games I'd rather play instead.

Only thing worse than this game is its fanbase. Consisting of fanboys who shout down any criticism with "updates will improve it". Bullsh*t the amount of new content this game would need to be worth even $40 would be more than it already has.

I have put around 10 hours into this game, 16 if you count the time i played on PS4, and after that much time I have found the initial sense of excitement from finding these planets and species has faded. You eventually start recognizing similarities between all of them. This is made worse by the fact that the variation in the planets is small, with the only major change in a lot of them being a swapped pallet. That isn't to say the game isn't aesthetically pleasing, it is honestly beautiful, but the lack of variation makes it feel very repetitive very fast.

On top of this, the PC version has major issues. It runs horribly on some very capable machines. It is not well optimized at all and is riddled with bugs that cause it to be unplayable for many.

I regret that I paid $60 for a game that is the quality of some early access beta (or alpha even).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unlike many people, the game actually runs decent enough on my PC and i didn't encounter any serious technological problems. Maybe i'm just lucky, since now i can review the game itself.

First, all the people who rave about the supposed amazing technological aspect of creating a huge universe filled with planets. 16 years ago, a single italian programmer released a game that did just that, a procedurally generated universe with billions of planets. Unlike this shallow garbage however, that game had a huge variety of planets, there were barren worlds, water worlds, gas giants, and so on. So to say that NMS did something that wasn't there before is simply not true.

At the end of the day, all NMS does is put together a planet from the same Seed over and over again and swap the colors. If you have been to one planet, you have seen them all. Same type of plants, little variety in alien life and a little different enviroments. It all feels the same. Also, since every single star system i went through has a space station in it and every single planet has those sentinel things on it, you never get that immersion of being an explorer because somebody (NPC-wise) has been there before.

I do understand that they had to add a number of game mechanics to go with the (failed and utterly shallow) exploration aspect but the resource gathering and crafting is just a huge grind. There is no fun in running around and trying to find that single resource you are missing or docking with a space station just to discover that they don't have that one thing you need.

The supposed story, if you even could call it that, is equally shallow, boring and doesnt make much sense. Space combat feels random and sluggish, the ship doesnt move nicely and you can tell after 10 seconds that its just a bad port from the PS4, with all the controls more or less geared towards as controller.

So, in conclusion, NMS fails in all aspects. Its technology is not that great and has been done before. Controls are bad, story nonexistent. And the exploration part is just too shallow to ever give you the urge to continue because there isn't anything new or wonderous to see. And all that for a whooping 59,99€? Save your money.

The space flight is extremely arcadey, even beyond what I expected based on the trailers and dev talks. There's no real depth to it at all, nor any significant reason to do so beyond gathering some resources or traveling.

Planetary exploration should be somewhat exciting, and was, for the first few planets, before I realized that every planet basically had every resource available, and the only substantial difference was visual. Even then, the planets rapidly starting looking the same. Outposts consist of the same few objects regardless of what alien race occupies them.

    Stations are boring.

Inventory management and user interface is both tedious and awkward.

At some point, with a lot of feature patches and quality of life improvements, this game might be worth buying. Right now it's certainly not worth the $60 price tag. At best it's a $15 Early Access title.

I can see this one on the shelf at Walmart as a no-name CD for $4.99 real soon. I hope it doesn't effect my stock in online gaming. Maybe some day it might be up to par but for now, skip it.

-To much promised, very little given. The creators promised so much and we get bits and pieces here and there. But overall they took a page from Peter Molyneux and gave us what can only be seen as a lite version of the original promised game.

-Repetitive is the name of the game. Everything about this game reeks of repetition. There is supposed to be literally billions upon billions of planets. Until you visit 20-30 of them. Then you see patterns emerge in how this spawn/are generated. On top of that, you do the same things over, and over, and over again. I'd honestly score the game higher if they officially changed the name to Repetition Sim 2016.

-Are we alone in the universe? The answer currently is yes. Because out of all of the broken promises this is the biggest. You cannot interact with people as they don't technically exist in your game. Even if they are on your planet, you can't see or find them essentially making this an offline experience.

-Multiverse theory. This is more of a pun and a poke. 10s of billions of planets and I have visited 34 as of this review. Despite my woes and over all meh feeling, once the patterns emerged, I tried my best to find a planet truly unique. And as far as I can tell. It doesn't exist. Technically, out of the amount of planets there has to be one or two of them. But after no lifing the game for days on end. Hell if I can find it.

Overall. The game isn't terrible it just doesn't feel like it's the game I paid for. Similarly to how people can exist on your planet but you can't do anything with them. This game exists and I can't do hardly anything that was promised to me over the last couple of years. It doesn't feel like it's actually finished. This feels like a mid way Alpha version. The basics exist and that's about it. On top of that, the creator decided to flipflop in a matter of a week from saying "No dlc, you paid for the game. The content should be free." to saying "Future content will probably cost something." If it were in my power, I'd get a refund and have zero regrets about it at this point.

And then when the game was released, it had something like 20/100 of what he promised, and in a very broken state. I could create a game with a coca-cola vending machine and it would have much more depth in its trading than what the game has.

The games biggest selling point was that you could explore planets that nobody had ever before seen. Well, guess what, there are already hundreds of NPCs in the ground with outposts and trade-depots, so im not the first to step foot on the planet.
After 50 planets or so, you've pretty much seen everything the game has to offer when it comes to exploring.

One second it's flowing nicely and then all of a sudden herky jerky and I feel like I am walking in mud. I don't spend over $1k on a PC to play games with such terrible frame rates and bugs.

I also found a lump of aluminum procedurally generated underneath a shelter and i could not get to it. I thought, oh I can just blow holes in the ground with my plasma grenades...nope...you can't blow up shelters, so the ground is untouchable. I keep seeing giant columns of floating resources and buildings generated into the sides of mountains and into seas...and i can't enter through the door.

There are some interesting things that they did here but the execution is terrible. It makes me wonder if any of the people involved in the design of this game played any video games as kids...I hope steam refunds me!

To briefly state the one positive, It is a nice looking game, even if it's so laggy that you can barely access the menu or orient your character at all. That's why it gets a 2 rather than a 1 or 0.

Firstly, there's the foolishness that's by design. You walk so slowly, and the sprint controls don't seem to work as far as I can tell. The loading screen forces you to sit through a 5ish minute starry background screensaver, as if it weren't even a game and is in fact a throwback to Windows 98, -each and every time- you start up the cursed thing, even when I already saved the game. Mining gets tedious and repetitive after about 2 minutes.

Secondly, there are plenty of issues that seem to be unintended consequences of the slipshod gaming engine design. The latest patch (as of GOG 2.3.0.5) does little to address any of its performance issues. It drags so slowly through lag-ridden menus that you barely have the ability to figure out how to craft, much less make something of use in the barren sands of some unpronounceable planet that, to try and say, would sound like it was named by a deranged Swedish Mad Libber. I have a fairly capable desktop with i7 core, 8 GB of RAM, and no problem running most contemporary video games on high or medium graphics settings. This game would not respond when I turned everything to the -minimum- settings, and even after I did, there seemed to be very little of use to do besides.

Whoever is giving this travesty a positive or mixed score just simply isn't telling the truth. That anyone could think to charge someone $60 for this experiment is simply obscene.

Okay, launch day bugs, I get it, kinks need to be worked out. So I do a little Googling, only to find out that Sean Murray is now blaming the users for not having up to date drivers, or insufficient hardware. What the actual **** Seriously?

All right, so I'll wait a week or so, see what updates get pushed out, maybe things will run a little smoother. And they do! a *little*. I get 25-30 FPS instead of 15, great.

Guess I'll try and enjoy what I can. At this point, I'm aware that I'll likely never see another player, nor participate in large scale space battles. I have flown around for 12 hours, litterally discovering the same planet, with different colors, different colored plants (note, *different colored,* not actually any different), and slightly different wildlife. At about the 12 hour mark, I came upon something interesting. An "anomaly." Sweet! Something new! Maybe this is where things pick up. Long story short, I was able to enter a black hole. Neat! Yes, there are so many planets you and all your friends will never see them all but you wouldn't want to as they all play within the same range of experience, the only difference between a hot planet and a radioactive one (or a toxic or frozen for that matter) is the level of shielding you have determining how long you can stay outside, while on-planet there's not much to do but trade, learn words, pick up resources have a brief skirmish and scram, there's no building to do and no wars to fight. The Fun-Police sentinels are ineffectual on land as and in space so are just a mild annoyance.

The odd space 'battle' may kick off as you jump into a new system (too many times) but it doesn't matter if they're ignored, there's no data on who's fighting or why and getting involved will net you the same amount of respect as giving 10 iron to lazy trader.

The flora and fauna are sort of interesting at first, but have no depth to them outside being passive or aggro and their freaky appearances which break suspension of disbelief in some combinations. Hop to about 16 planets and you've seen pretty much every variation of plant and most of the 'animal parts' that go to making up the non-sentient life. The sentient life consists of three races Beakface, Daft Punk and Brute who are just there to trade and teach you words, there's no sense of them inhabiting any world other than in their outposts, which, paradoxically, are on EVERY planet. There's no gas giants or any non-solid worlds, or even strange suns either. There is *some* variation in the terrain however, the occasional world will have giant cubes of land protruding from the surface or floating islands but again, that, with the minimal plant, animal and mineral variation slapped on top is literally all there is to them.

The one good thing about this game is the fabled "Take-off from one world land on another" with no cut-scenes or loading which has been a holy grail of gaming for so long it's painful to see it done so flimsily. There is nothing satisfying about space combat, it feels like plastic kids toys whipping around.

Some parts look pretty but the anti-aliasing is horrific all over.

The 'ending' (just cheat your way to the core if you must see it, you'll be.... less incensed that way) is exactly the kind of slap in the face that paying the slightest heed to hype will net you. Anyone defending it either must be being paid or is in such depths of delusion that they're a danger to their own mental health and yours.

Play this game with no expectations while listening to your favourite podcasts and you might just come away with a slightly favourable view of it, then skip to the end and realise it'd just an epic waste of time getting there honestly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

    -NPC.

The sound design I liked, but I missed voice acting from a title that famous.

The game is poorly optimised. I have a pretty good, new rig, and I have micro stutters the whole time I am playing.

As for the UI/UX? Oh my.. That was one of the main issue for me, and it is why I just unistalled it after 1 hour. Even with the help of the tutorial I was lost in the interface. Maybe the problem is with me, but I felt frustrated the whole time I was playing, because of it.

The other main reason why I just quit/uninstalled it so soon was that I just didn't care about the whole setup. Usually I like space themed games.. Maybe that is an understatement. I LOVE most of them. However with this one I just couldn't connect, and didn't find any fun playing it. I felt all task a chore. Go there, mine that, create that. I can't explain, cause a lot of game has this kind of objectives, and deliver fun moments. However for me, not this one.

I don't want to write about how misleading was the marketing 5 years ago. That is the past, I don't care about that.

Frankly this game is a huge exercise in "bait and switch" marketing. Right up until release there were lots of features being talked about for the game that simply are not there and all I feel is a resounding sense of disappointment in this game.

At the time I write this, there are videos on the steam page for this game that I based my purchase decision on, which turn out to be demo content that was ripped from the game prior to release.

Part of the problem here of course is that the games industry journos were all taken in by NMS bait and switch tactics just the same as us, and not many of them have the stones to say "Actually that game we've been putting on the cover for months and whipping you all up into a frenzy over is actually only a 5/10 at best"

This game, however, does nothing to advance this genre. On top of the lazy procedural generation nonsense that all looks the same after only an hour or so of gameplay, the developers just seemed to have shot themselves in the foot at every key decision in the game. If they had kept the number of planets down significantly and actually designed the planets themselves, or used interesting templates that could have some elements of procedural generation in them, the game would be much more enjoyable. If player interaction was actually a thing that frequently happens and not something that only a small percent of the player base ever experiences, the game would be much more enjoyable. If there was actual progression in the game itself, the game would be much more enjoyable. However, Hello Games (the developers of No Man's Sky) decided that they knew what was best for the player base and chose to not do any of these things. No Man's Sky, or as some have dubbed it, No Guy Buy, is the worst kind of game; an amazing concept in an exciting genre that boasts grandiose claims and does nothing but devolve the genre. Graphics are dated and game play is a grind. Walking to places takes forever and there is nothing to do that's engaging. Story is non existent. Firstly this upscaling 720p into 1080p graphic is absolutely horrendous. In regards to that, anti-aliasing option is simply not working, and being completely left off. I can’t endure those jaggy edges and blurry graphics. It can simply make you blind, even i feel like high after 1-2 hours session. Seriously there is something wrong about graphics apart of technical flaws. If not for the games like this (AAA priced ones!!) why do we buy GTX 1080 and pay £600 for that, right?

Second important thing needs to be addressed is that Hello Games decided to hire a QA team right after release…What about before release? Can’t you just test the game before release it! Isn't that more professional way to do it! I understand that low budget companies sometimes do not invest into it, instead they try to sort it out inside the company. However, if you charge AAA price to a game, perceptibly people expect some quality in it.

Everybody has already mentioned about technical problem, and some sort of troubleshooting so I skip that. Most of you have got literally 2-3 hours before a bed time after work, dinner, gym..etc . If those hours are very precious to you, i strongly recommend to not waste it with this game at its current stage! Otherwise, you force yourself to play it just to ease the pain of £39.99..

However, there are couple of things that i like in this game. if you are a Sci-fi fan like me that would be worth to chase the root of alien civilization by reading lores and following the routes of atlas guidance. So there is no story line but game pushes you to find out. I admit I like this hidden concept however it is still too hard to navigate in galaxy map due bad design and framerate drops. I also have some hopes that in future we will get some different generated planets like giant mountains , lava, gas clouds..etc, PVP battles, storyline, patches..etc . Hope, they somehow deliver it!

Game had much potential, and maybe can still be fixed... But for now I don't recommend it even for free.

    Good parts of the game:

    1. Music is niceish

    2. Graphics are interesting

    3. Exploration part is interesting, as is the language thing, aliens, etc...

    Cons:

    1. Controls are TERRIBLE, for some reason it is almost impossible to make your ship go where you want (it tend to steer/turn on its own sometimes), frequently when you attempt to land in a landing pad, you land right next to it, and waste resources, there is no "target" button to make things more easy. On foot, all the same problems also happen, but it is less aggravating.

    2. Tiny FOV even on maximum settings, it looks like you are always zoomed in, it is too hard to find things because of this (you press the "SCAN" button, and then you have to spin super fast to see anything at all before the icons disappear, thanks to tiny FOV). Also, it is really, REALLY easy to get lost because of this too.

    3. Game has really crappy performance, I am playing it on a super beefy PC (overclocked 32GB RAM, overclocked i5, beefy newest radeon), and it still stutters a lot on low settings!!!

    4. Very, VERY, VEEERY repetitive, not because of being procedural, but because of the "mining" part, so for example red plants and red minerals are always "energy" resources, since "energy" is essential, every single planet has it, even airless moons has red plants and red minerals...

    5. The mining part is terrible, it is very slow, and the inventory is super tiny, with tiny stacks, you spend more time playing tetris with your inventory than playing the game, and playing the game is mostly, mining.

    6. You "discover" planets that have all sorts of junk on them, even planets that the game claims to have zero fauna and zero flora, you still find plants, abandoned buildings with stereotypical "alien goo fungus", stashes EVERYWHERE, aliens everywhere, and so on.

    7. The enemy robot thingies attack you for "no reason" if you are using your "gun", even if you are using the mining part of it, to mine...

    8. I was attacked by pirates a couple times, super easy, and saw a single space battle, it sucked, a lot, first, the game doesn't say who is ally and who is enemy, and doesn't have a "target" button, so you must fly around bewildered as bazillions of tiny ships shoot each other in the middle of capital ships and you have no clue what is going on. Seriously, is it that hard to show someone side on a battle at least? (it is impossible to know what sides are fighting).

    9. Battle controls overall suck, your ship, even in space, fly like a airplane that can reverse but can't stop, if you attempt to stop, your "plane" reverse direction (ie: switch forward/backward speed, jumping between -40 to 40, or 40 to -40), turn radius is huge, and there is no inertia, since all weapons are quite simple, battles look like medieval jousting, just keep crossing with enemies while shooting, turn around, and repeat, aiming skills and tactics are completely unimportant, the only thing that matters is your ship stats, and how fast you can fix your shield (you have to open the inventory, and then "re-craft" the shield, mid-fight... the game doesn't pause when you are doing this).

The gameplay consists of shooting rocks with a laser for resources, photographing animals and plants and looting outposts. That's it. The crafting mechanics is rudimentary, the survival aspect is annoying and pointless and the exploration is boring once you visit few planets and start to see the assets repeat. Interaction with the world around you is virtually non-existent. Well you can shoot rocks but that's about it. Occasionally you can also shoot a droid or a pirate ship in space. The technology is impressive but that does not make a fun game.

Like the sucker that I am, I purchased the game on PC. It's just as bad as it always was. It's no fun at all. There is nothing resembling a story. What's there is not engaging. It's sparse in every category: imagination, entertainment value, things to do, etc. I can't stress enough how bad this game is. It is a complete failure and I hate that I bought it twice. A legendarily terrible game. If if everyone's expectations for this game were somehow adjusted before it was released it would still be a extremely disappointing. There was potential for this game a long time ago when it was still in it's concept art stages.

As everyone else here remarks, all planets are the same, stuff has randomized shapes and colors but is like changing a model texture, it's still the same animal with different colors. All have runes, plants, animals, and the 4 types of bases. All you can find just by landing because they are repeated to boredom.

There are no barren, gas giants, ring planets, all stars are the same, every system has a bunch of planets all close together that for some reason don't rotate around the sun.

The ship's navigation is so terrible, specially when flying near the surface of a planet, that I cannot describe how frustrating it is.

This is not a game, it's only a tech demo, and the trailers are proof enough this is not what they promised.

The short version is this: No Man's Sky gets a 1 from me because of the disappointment factor. It is the single most disappointing video game experience I have ever had and it's entirely the producer's fault.

The hype began three years ago (same E3 that first teased Bloodborne if I recall correctly) and it looked amazing. It looked like Minecraft, Subnautica, Mass Effect, this sprawling survivor space adventure unlike anything we had ever experienced and what's more, it was advertised as such. There would be EVE like space interactions (we were told after all that this would be a multiplayer game) and I was excited. I followed the hype and was so excited for this game.

I pre-ordered it and on midnight of release for PC I installed it.

The first few minutes were troubling and it quickly turned devastating. There is nothing to do. You mine but cannot build much. You discover but cannot share with anyone (turns out Multiplayer does not exist). You learn alien words but the interactions with aliens are flat and uninspired. The most exciting thing that might happen is you accidentally shoot a sentinel: the dull and lifeless protectors... or something... of every planet in the universe.

What is so disappointing is how easy that would have been to correct. The set up for great plots are there: what are the sentinels? How are they everywhere? what's the deal with these aliens? What is Atlas? There is so much and yet the only hint of a plot is to continually slog away through procedurally generated planets until I guess you can reach the universe's core.

The only merit this game has is to drive home the stark, existential reality of space travel. That we are surrounded by such vast nothingness and I suppose in that way it's a moodily artistic commentary on life but not one that is worth 60 dollars. The price is borderline theft. This is not a triple A game and Hello games has a very long way to go before it can consider itself a triple A producer. This tremendous failure of a game (in that it has failed to deliver on any of its promise) will be an obstacle that they will need to work a very long time to overcome.

(PS, I love that I can check a box for spoilers. As if there's any story here to spoil at all)

With that being said, let's talk about the game. I just played a farming demo simulation game with no end game goal except " go to the center of the universe where nothing happen". Gathering resources to have ships with a bigger inventory.. Great. And that's all guys. The combat on the ground is terrible and very rare. On space ? I had better sensation of space combat in Star wars Rogue Squadron II... 15 years ago. I mean it's the worst combat experience I've had for years. You guys from Hello Games never looked at other games ? You've played Candy Crush for all this years? There is plenty of games (at 20$) you could 've take inspiration from, with not that much development to do.

Who was the game designer of the game, on which feature he worked on? It's great to farm rocks and trees but for 60$ really?. Seriously, you should've worked only on Joe Danger and mobile games. This game is full of bad design choice.

The UX/UI of the game is terrible, it's just a bad adaptation of Destiny interface and interaction. One example : "Hold" a key for ALL interactions in the game? Really ?? Do you even know why we use "hold" interactions at the beginning? Go read some books about User Experience. Even in the video settings ? Did you even played on day on PC? It's crazy how some things are just really bad executed in this game.
The design of the game is bad and that's all. No features in the game show the contrary.

Anyway, go back on developing mobile games. It better suits your abilities. You disrespect all the players who trusted you and I'm glad I wasn't that naive to give you money to play this game.
Sean Murray, you stolen money from people. You should be ashamed of what you did to promote your **** game. But yeah, now you don't care, with your tech demo, mission accomplished, you've earned enough money.

I had high hopes for No Man's Sky, and hoped it would live up to it's promises, but the game is a complete mess. In it's current state, this is one of the biggest dissapointments of the last few years. Allow me to explain why:

    1:Horrible optimization.
The game is a disaster from a technical point of view, and even the best of PC's can't properly handle this game. The menus are clearly designed for consoles, and the save feature is extremely uninspired, not to mention the lack of any relevant online features.

    2:Repetitive gameplay.

In 20 minutes of repetitive resource gathering and mining, I had the pleasure of being attacked every single minute by sentry drones, and every time I had taken a hit, my screen flashed red as if my liver was forcefully pulled out, even though I was at 80% health. Then I was back to more resource mining and uninspired crafting, with nothing to keep my attention. By the time the ship was repaired I couldn't help but think: what is the point?

    3:Uninspired survival system

It's not hard to keep yourself alive,it's just tedious. More resource mining to keep yourself alive, so you can continue to mine more resources. If some people find this entertaining, then I can suggest a job at a mining company. There you can mine all day long, and at least you're getting paid for it. Also it's really hard to die. I mean, you've got to fail really hard at being a gamer to die (no offense to bad gamers intended), so there's no sense of tension, therefore making the survival system itself redundant and obnoxious.

4:A lot of planets are carbon copies of each other

Yes folks, now we can have 18 quintillion copies of the same planet types. I was shocked to see that the second planet I landed on was almost identical to my first one, I seriously considered for a few seconds that I mistakenly landed on the first planet again, but it was another planet with the same characteristics. Even the damn weather conditions were the same.

    5:The price tag.

This point would not be here, but I didn't win the lottery so I have to say this: The game is very overpriced, especially considering the pathetic state of this unfortunate PC port.I I've played quite a few bad ports in my life, but this takes the concept to a whole new level. You can almost think they did it on purpose, not that I'm implying it or anything. I guess the promise of a patch must mean a lot to some people, but if they couldn't be bothered to properly test the game before release, why would they bother now to fix it? Are they even capable of fixing it?

But even if they fix this horrendous port, the game does not have much to offer. It promised way more than it could deliver, and that's the reality of it. If you can find enjoyment in this game, that's great. But there is no way you can ignore it's numerous technical problems, repetitive gameplay, redundant survival system, poor design choices, weak combat, repetitive planet types and general lack of polish.

I could say more but I'll stop here because there's honestly no point in saying more than I did. Those who can see no fault in this game will never listen to anyone anyway. If they release a decent patch I will update my rating, but as it stands the game receives a glorious 1(One) without the zero after it. Maybe next time they will test the product before they release it. In conclusion I can say only two words :
    Stay Away.

The objective of the game is travel to the center of the universe while upgrading your various equipment which range anywhere from your spaceship to suit to combat weapon. While not that much different from its predecessors in this regard, the process through which you are forced to continuously accumulate resources in the face of limited inventory space is perhaps the most unnecessarily tedious and boring mechanic I have yet to encounter in a game. From a high level perspective, the game is extremely basic with the same repetitive actions and goals. Don't be fooled by the procedurally generated gimmick that the developer is talking about. The planets are basically all the same but just with different assets. Outside of resource collection, the space ship mechanics are clunky and difficult to navigate. The combat while there, sticks of out like a sore thumb and feels like something which added as an after thought in order to pad the game rather than being developed as a core mechanic from the start. In between exploring those generic planets is of course the space travel which while novel at first quickly become the most frustrating part of the game as you are forced to wait anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes before reaching a destination all while holding down several buttons. Moving on to the technical aspects, it becomes obviously clear that NMS is not optimized for the PC. Running a GTX 970 and a i5-4690k @ 4.4 GHz, I constantly encountered stuttering and inconsistent frame drops as low as 20 FPS. For $60 this is unacceptable. If you are thinking about buying this game on PC, take this as a warning and do not buy it until either:
    1. It has dropped significantly in price, and
    2. The developer fixes the pc port and adds more content.

60€ for nothing but a promise of a sean murray (and some very good placed trailers).

Wait for the reviews, pirate demo them(because no one want u to test a game before they sold it to you) or just watch the youtubers playing them.
    Good lesson bro, good lesson.

I know we are here to judge and give our rating and review to a certain title, but in this case I can't split the game itself from the company behind it. Just taking into consideration the sheer amount of lies Sean Murray managed to deliver to players worldwide should be enough to say no, since it can set a standard people get used to.

The game itself was not ready at all for sale,

The game itself was not ready at all for sale, should have undergone a longer development before release, all we got is an inventory managing/repetitive exploration game that could have really been "mind blowing" (cit.).
Sadly things didn't go this way, the game is preposterous and it's not worth the 60$ price tag at all, hell i would regret spending 20$ on what came out in the end.

The game is devoid of the features promised by Sean Murray in the build up to this games release. Possibly to the point of being illegal. Do not take the risk on this game as Steam are being very difficult in offering refunds.

The game is poorly executed, badly optimised, hollow with it's only redeeming feature being it's soundtrack and colour palette

"There is potential for this game, but right now it's poorly executed."
This is so true, this game is very dissapointing to say the least, I lost a lot of money here.

The game is an unholy mess and for 50 euros nevertheless, low frame rates and repetitive gameplay. The developers lied to the community which supported them and their behavior shouldn't be left unpunished. Honestly, you are better off with Minecraft.

Jogo que prometeu muito e não realizou quase nada , onde os desenvolvedores mentiram. O jogo tem um vasto universo mas com poucas coisas a se fazer , que vai de reparar a nave e tirar fotos das criaturas que também são muito mal feitas

Still has not apologized even once for lying and misleading all his fans due to pressures to get an influx of cash. It doesn't matter how much you go back and fix retroactively until you acknowledge misleading everyone.

There is absolutely no aspect of this game that isn't bad. From the UI, through combat, endless boring resource grind to controls where for some reason sprint is bound to pressing the right analog stick

5 years of updates may have improved this game from what it was on release, but a turd remains a turd no matter how much you polish it up, and you just can't get rid of the smell.

The game was a 9/10. Really cool exploration feature. But they ruin it in one day. So the note is still gonnae be 1/10 till the changes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you want to pay $60 dollars for a game that runs terribly, has at most 5 hours of interesting content, an inventory system worse than Destiny's, combat worse than Minecraft's, numerous bugs/glitches, an insulting ending, and a developer that won't address the fact that they lied to everybody, then you should buy this game. What is this POS ??? All that hype for that unfinished bugged "universe" ?
Gonna ask a refund right now....
How can this game even be launched at that state? Hello Games, wake up

An offensive, hideous score for an offensive, hideous PC release.
After waiting for two years, I was presented with a stutterfest of Arkham / JCause 3 proportions, that is, for all intents and purposes, unplayable due to hideous performance.

I remember playing Privateer in the early 90s and being blown away by its size and diversity of planets and stations, etc. Back then I thought that in a few decades games like that would be so massive that you cant even explore them anymore because you wouldnt be able to live long enough.
No Mans Sky promised that. Instead of that we got... well we all know.
I threw it away. But then

I threw it away. But then after a few years suddenly reports of it having improved trickled in. That the devs are massively patching it and adding all that was promised.

So I got it out again and after a few hours realized its still the same boring game that doesnt make sense in many ways, doesnt have a real story or a goal, still only has maybe 12 different planets that are spread across the galaxy in tiny variations, still feels dead and sterile, still has crappy space mechanics, still has intelligent life everywhere, yet you never see planets with cities or a civilization, AKA simply makes NO sense whatsoever.
IDK why people say that and the ratings reflect that, because its still a very bad and uninteresting game. I dont know a single person who likes that game even in its current state, yet reviews are really good nowadays.
Thats BS, and I think those reviews are bought.

I have zero interest in playing a 3D version of Starbound, only limited to Single-Player, after I finished Starbound.

Other than that, it is truly a lonely game of isolation and exploration, which again, I already did with Starbound. . .but was actually to occasionally play cooperatively and mission run cooperatively.

Literally every aspect of this game is shallow and an excellent example of why you NEVER pre-order. There is no redeeming feature in this game beyond an ok color palette and the sheer amount of humor I'm getting from watching it crash and burn under the weight of **** and plain incompetence.

Deleted my review 3 times (on Steam with 35.8 hours total played) trying to force myself to continue through this massive mess. Read all the reviews already mentioned this game is not anywhere near what you pay for it. Furthermore, massive amount of missing features that should have been in game. A mind numbing grind built for the brain dead stoner in you (if that is in fact you).

I gave it another 4 hours and I can't take anymore. There is no me in a infinite universe making my own decisions. It's land, farm, grind, sell, upgrade, lose half your ♥♥♥♥ to grind some more to upgrade to lose half your ♥♥♥♥ to grind some more to get to the core and have further disappointment. Nothing has changed or been different from hour one to 35.8 except for me upgrading my 3 inventories thereby removing all my good assets and making grind out farming to make the crap over again. Ship skins are the only difference as well with ships. Total disappointment through and through.

You would honestly have more enjoyment commiting Hari kari with a dull fish hook....

Edit: I forgot to mention again from my original post that I didn't care about the whole multiplayer thing. However, on Day 1 with 3 hours into game, I jumped to the next system and guess what I found? The entire system was already named by another player. Furthermore, the next 4 jumps were the same damn thing. The 4th jump actually had two different player named planets.

I didn't feel like this explorer in an infinite space for sure. So many promises and so many lies. Those supporting this crap will try to argue differently but the internet is your friend in this. You can do all the research you need to and find legitimate interviews with Sean up until release selling us a totally different gaming experience.

All the silence isn't helping matters either. Couldn't shut Sean up until the release of this steaming pile of dung and now nothing to say anywhere. If your plan is to confirm everyone's complaints and distrust in what you did, ignoring them is certainly the solution Sean (sarcasm off).

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
