    No mans Sky looks and sounds impressive but even if it has lots of planets the game play gets boring.Face it this indie game was just as over hyped as mighty no 9 which turned out to be a disaster. At least its better than that game.The visuals and world seem impressive but there isn't much to do game play wise other than mine and craft stuff, rename things and talk to aliens.It has theNo mans Sky looks and sounds impressive but even if it has lots of planets the game play gets boring.Face it this indie game was just as over hyped as mighty no 9 which turned out to be a disaster. You only just need to like the game. Like me i have played the game and i liked it, and i dont bother me on the bad or the the good critics . Just dont bother you on the critics!     On my Computer Setup (i5 750, GTX 960, 8GB Ram) the Game works okay. I get 30 FPS I can play this fine. Sometime the Game freezes for a moment, but that's fine. I can enjoy exploring. But I noticed, that the rendering doesn't work perfect. Sometimes not everything gets rendered 100%.

    The game needs to work better and some sort of Base building. That could be on Planets or with a giant    On my Computer Setup (i5 750, GTX 960, 8GB Ram) the Game works okay. There isnt much direction, mostly crafting and exploration, trading with the inhabitants, and learning the language. Once they add in multiplayer, some questing or objectives, bases/pets(Which they said they will be), and maybe make the flight a bit less clunky this game will be muchSo I have put in a few hours so far in the game.     Поначалу игра показалась мне скучной, но пересилив себя и поиграв в неё еще пару часиков, я увлекся и теперь играю каждый день. Мне самому кажется это странным. Но я думаю игра должна сразу чем-то цеплять и не отпускать до конца, поэтому я снижаю свою оценку. И да, я оцениваю не объективно.     Despite its flaws there is something magical about the game. 18 quintillion planets, all unique. You land on one and there's a good possibility you're going to be the only one that ever sees it. It becomes your planet. I love that sense of solitude, and the environments are often very beautiful. Just wandering around exploring is very good stress relief.

    That said, there are many frustrations and disappointments. Inventory management is not fun, and that's a problem because gaining more inventory slots is pretty much the sole form of character progression. You want to craft upgrades, but every upgrade takes up an inventory slot that you can't spare. You want to craft a one time use bypass chip to unlock something, but first you have to destroy things to make room in your inventory. You find a cool looking crashed ship, but it's useless because the inventory is smaller than yours. You find a new multitool with more slots, but you have to craft all your upgrades again only to repeat the whole process an hour later. There's really no point in trying too hard to tune your upgrades until you max out your inventory slots. Gaining inventory slots one by one is a tedious grind, and yet without that, there's almost nothing to strive for.

    Alien and terminal interactions are fun, but you begin to see the same logic problems cropping up over and over. I've used the same number to answer the exact same problem at least 5 times now. And while the landscapes and creatures are procedurally generated, there is a very small subset of buildings and interactive objects that you begin to see over and over again.

    Other than naming things, there is no way to leave your mark in the world. You can't build anything. You can't change anything. I can't think of a single way to influence the world in any way.

    There are achievements for scanning 100% of the creatures on a planet, yet there are always 1 or 2 species on a planet that are nigh impossible to find because they are so rare. It took me 3 days of flying around on the same planet before I finally completed this objective just once. Thinking about doing it again makes me want to stop playing.

    Lastly, it seems like a pretty poor PC port. You may have to fiddle with the graphics settings before you can even get it to run (I had to enable Borderless Windowed mode), and even then the performance is not the best. I have been experiencing some kind of memory leak, where after several hours of playing the FPS tanks and I have to restart the game. Playable, but not impressive.

    It's a fun game to wander aimlessly around. In fact I really enjoy doing that. But the moment you start to try to complete any of the games objectives, anything that makes the game an actual game, it starts to become a boring grind.    … Expand

    Well, the game isn't bad at all, however I was expecting more. It can be a little bit disappointing for those who are expecting for great graphics for example. At 1080p the image is a little bit blurry (and I know how to configure my graphic settings for god sake), feels like the game was ported (which is ridiculous.. we are in 2016).     Planetscape wallpaper generator. Plenty of ambiance with a 70s sci-fi art style. Buy it if you would like to wander the universe looking at different but similar planets while grinding elements ad infinitum with the occasional ship fight.

    Juego entretenido para quien le gusta la exploración, por desgracia, acaba resultando repetitivo cuando se avanza un poco en la partida ya que una vez terminados los objetivos basicos el objetivo único del juego pasa a ser avanzar hacia el centro de la galaxia por los medios de que dispongas, y puedo garantizar que es un proceso muy largo y pesado.

With that said though, there still is a lot to love here and the developers are adding more and more to the game through updates and the recent 'Waking Titan' ARG.     This game is a much better game than what it was in 2016. There are many more things to do now and it feels way more dynamic and has way more depth. The game still has a ways to go, but it is getting there.

    First of all, this game is not for everyone, this is a game about exploration, about wandering about in the endless procedural generated galaxy.     I think No Man's Sky is a great game. The graphics are impressive, the gameplay relatively exciting. What I have to criticize in the gameplay, however, is that the missions are mostly structured as follows:
      - Go somewhere
    - pick something up / give / eliminate - fly back. It can also be annoying when small animals attack you for unknown reasons.     Rough launch but the regular updates have made this game definitely worth playing
    If you don't mind grinding and enjoy exploration / building then try it out
    The game does occasionally crash for me though and the occasional bug but nothing major Edit 2020: The game now has major performance issues for me including frequent crashing, low fps and textures not loading in properly. I have also been experiencing a lot more bugs like the discovery system not working, other players being invisible, bases dissapearing. All of these things were pretty much non-existant in the past.

NMS propose tout de même une belle aventure, j'étais déjà conquis à sa sortie, et c'est évidemment encore plus le cas aujourd'hui, même s'il pourrait être encore bien meilleur sur certains points.

Some people complain about the in-space combat but frankly I haven't had that many problems with it and it seems more like a personal problem.

    · It's really cool to look at. The visuals are just out of control.

    · The developer is actively releasing high quality content for the game, and seems to actually care about the sustainability of the title.

    -CONS-

    · The game struggles with its story - it's pretty cool but it drags on for an eternity and the rewards are pretty garbage.

    · Both PvE and PvP in this title are for the most part non-existent and otherwise complete and utter garbage. While the title seems to be purposefully centered around exploration, the lack of content encouraging players to interact with one another results in a game that's pretty boring to play with a group.

    · While new stuff is coming out, it still does suffer some of the same repetitive complaints that have plagued it in the past about lack of meaningful content, though it's getting much, much better.    … Expand

    Had a pretty rocky launch but it improved steadly (and for free) and it's now a pretty decent game.
    A brief caracterization would be: It's like a Galaxy wide version of Minecraft.

But seeing as how we all have to wait a year or more for SC campaign/PU, I thought I would bite the bullet and finally check out NMS after all these years.

    I understand it was released to nearly universal letdown -- not delivering on hardly anything it was advertised to be, however, in it's current state as of writing this, the game is not half as bad as initial/outdated reviews would lead you to believe. It's a very decent game, and the only reason I can't give it a higher score is because I'm not a hardcore exploration fan. What the game currently does have to offer is pretty nice though. It's not perfect, but given from where it started, you can tell the developers care about making it better.

    I wish it had more ship diversity, both in terms of exterior design and interior layout (especially space station interiors -- they're all identical), and I understand this game is built around procedural generation, but if they added in more hand-crafted buildings/structures and populated those with interesting/unique characters with motivation/purpose, then this game would really shine imo. For all I know, Hello Games might be planning or have stuff in the works to address all this. Even if they don't the game is currently really decent.

В игре немало всего, иногда встречаются баги... Но они не так часты, чтобы разрушать всё впечатление. Если конкретно, то у меня были баги с поведением камеры (которые были связаны с взаимодействием с текстурами, и очень быстро прошли самиХорошая, довольно увлекательная игра. Борозди космос, исследуй другие планеты, знакомься с пришельцами, строй свою базу, выполняй квесты, торгуй и т. д. В игре немало всего, иногда встречаются баги... Но они не так часты, чтобы разрушать всё впечатление. After dozens of updates, the game became very similar to what was originally announced. The title has been fully released on Game Pass PC.

    THE TAKE OFF:
    No Man's Sky, as a pure survival game, instantly throws the player into the clutches of a planet immersed in the infinite universe. This planet can randomly be peaceful or malevolent, making the first steps more or less challenging depending on the type. The initial stages mainly involve learning the basics of survival, as well as constructing a small personal base. After these steps, the player will be unleashed into the universe of the Atlas, a mysterious deity or legend that requires the player to reach the center of the universe. As an interlude, the player can literally explore endless planets, take on dozens of side missions, and build bases on planets or immense frigates.

    STALENESS UNIVERSE:
    The gameplay of No Man's Sky is as varied as it is repetitive. In addition to the mere survival aspect of collecting resources, surviving in hostile planets, and fighting sentinels, players can venture into cooperative missions and raids on frigates and outposts. Furthermore, a small part of the game certainly involves space battles, albeit very simple ones. The true heart of the gameplay in this immense title lies in the exploration of thousands of planets, which often differ greatly, and the various space wrecks. A small mechanic that encourages exploration is the bestiary and encyclopedia of creatures and objects on the planets, offering small rewards in currency.

    WHAT COLOR IS THE SPACE?:
    Graphically, it is rather average, with a wide variety of designs and coloration of the different worlds. Certainly, the imagination behind some plants and creatures is exceptional.

    SCATTERED ECHOES:
    The audio component, like the graphics, is average. However, its great merit lies in creating extremely relaxing and mesmerizing situations, with fitting soundtracks for deep space.

    BUT WHY 7?

    PROS:
    No Man's Sky is currently an extremely enjoyable and relaxing title to play and explore. The vastness and creativity of the game world rarely become tiresome, and the game's writing is unique and detailed, keeping the player engaged. Additionally, the main story, being very philosophical, will certainly stimulate the minds of the most imaginative players.

    CONS:
    The major problem with No Man's Sky lies in the immense repetitiveness that it reaches within a few days of gameplay. Every space station, NPC, planetary base, frigate, and most dialogues will always and uniformly be the same. Moreover, the game's strong survival aspect often leads to tedious farming sequences for normal gameplay actions. All these factors make it a highly enjoyable game even today, but it certainly doesn't lack some issues dating back to its release.

Only one GPU, at that time, could technically run what they were wanting to put in... so yeah they were going to dumb it down to appeal to the mass market. I see people complaining that its boring... what do you expect about a game that is centered around single player exploration, and not combat? Its not as bad as people say, but its also not as good as people say by any long mile. Its average. If you want a single player space exploration game, with minimal combat, then this is not a bad option. The worlds are big and there is some form of mindless, and minor, satisfaction from exploring ruins and learning an alien language. I oddly never had crashes or fps issues, since day 1 of launch... I was running a dying r9 290, with 16 gigs of ddr3 and an amd fx-8350 black. Stable 49 fps.… Expand

    Picked this up on steam recently and thought I'd give it a go plugged into my oculus rift 2 VR headset. Initial impressions were good, flying between planets, going into hyperspace, etc. Problem is that it's all boring. Planets are procedurally generated but they all look generic. There are animals pottering around but they don't do much. There's no flocking, predation, etc, going on. There's basically zero story and no voice acting. You spend all your time with your mining laser grinding plants and rocks then crafting them into more materials. You might also go into space to grind asteroids with your lasers. There's an occasional dogfight which can be quite frustrating. The gameplay loop is as boring as hell, it's all going towards a better spaceship, better mining laser, etc. I found myself desperately looking for fun things to do. It would be better if they added a proper story. I'd much rather have a single hand-crafted world with different biomes, cities, competing factions, interesting characters, quests, etc, than a zillion boring random planets with nothing going on. Plus, the game is full of transition animations: letterboxing on encountering an NPC, zooming out on the first save - all interesting in the first few hours but then the whole game feels like work I wanted to get over with.

    Travelling between stars is also time wasting; I don't think the game loads but has a fixed delay no matter what. Also, there is no straight travel but from star-to-star so even with max hyperdrive, for each 1600 lightyears I got closer to the center by 600 lightyears (~300 jumps x 90 seconds? Gave up and modded it).

    Traversing a planet is also tedious, slow walking speed and such, but just like with the Mako from Mass Effect, there is two side of it: the terrain. The fractal like structure generated really looks realistic, except I havent found any planet with miles of flat surface (that is not water).

    Flying around is fun, not crashing at all, but often I really wanted to look down to see where I land. Given that, I wonder why there is no such thing as auto-landing near a point of interest or trade post?

    The game lacks a ton of video-advertised features, some of them forgiveable while others are not. I believe many features didn't make the release because of stability or balance issues. However, the poorly designed UI has no excuse.

    There is nothing really to own, no reason to hoard, there is nothing to go back for and once all languages, milestones and achievements have been reached in the current game, there is nothing to play for.

    The inventory space is small but expandable relatively easily but I felt the stacking of resources is too low, plus there are items that don't stack for no apparent reason. In addition, the mouse handling is worst of both PC and console worlds: PC players have to hold a button like the console ones instead of clicking and console people have to move a mouse-like cursor?!

    The graphics looked okay to me and the game was stable on my machine with GTX 660, but a GTX 1060+ really helps with smoothness and framerate. The sound is okay but some contextual ones are quite repeating after a while.

    The technology seems to be there and hope they can expand it with more content, but note that they can't change the seed or the generation algorithm because that would break existing content (i.e., your current location generated a planet beneath you and with an update, the same coordinate is now within a space whale...).

    Is it worth a full price? I don't feel so.

    (Bought it 4 days after the launch, played the vanilla game for 6 hours, played another 50 hours with all sorts of convenience mods; reached the center and gave up for now.)    … Expand

    The best criticism that I heard of the game is its "an ocean of content that is only about an inch deep." For those who love sandboxes though, this will be a stellar title. For me this sandbox is just too lose and offers too little engagement to keep me interested for an extended time, but has provided 40 hours of entertainment and will be there whenever I decide I want to mindlessly grind away at NMS.    … Expand

    Anywho, on to the game. It's a bit of a self starting kind of game. You have to have your own agenda with this game. There is currently too little to keep you occupied unless you set and meet your own goals. If you are looking for an EVE with a cockpit, this game is NOT it. This is a young adult version of Elite: Dangerous. It's really light on the narrative. If you are on OC completionist, you will never leave this game. After 15 hours I am still in my second ship and second multi tool( without using guides...). Their should be a bit more variation in the game to keep things interesting. Because of the thin story, I was actually quite attached to it, and even more attached to the story told through the Atlas Path and the associated Atlas Interfaces.

    In mid-August 2017, I was already done with the Atlas Path (I finished it in December 2016). That gave me one single reward as well as an epic event that we still don’t really understand today. In the month of August, developers at Hello Games reworked the entire story (and added a bunch of fetch quests), and they kept doing it until 2022. Currently, the story is a weird patchwork of things we mostly knew in 2016 and it feels more like a long tutorial… Also, whether you are a newcomer or an old-timer trying to resume a playthrough; whether you play in “Creative Mode” or in “Normal Mode”; the storytelling doesn’t branch coherently.

    Here’s an example for bug that has been around since 2017: Early in the game, a character will ask you about another character’s whereabouts, even though you haven’t met anyone yet. That same character will also explain to you that nothing changed in their space station, even though this is your first visit ever.

    Such problems in storytelling feel immersion-breaking to me, and there are many of them during the entire game.

    Community Management is next to non-existent, and developers keep changing the ways to play the game (also called “gameplay mechanics”), which often deprecate players’ play style and add bugs to other unaddressed bugs.

    In 2016, again, the game was really simple. Too simple for some, but quite good to me, honestly. There was nothing much to be shared by developers, aside from Patch Notes that were explaining fixes or little improvements to the game. The game was difficult to master, but it was fun.

    Soon after the release, they started adding things that were not even supposed to be part of the game, like the base building. I know this might be surprising to learn that base building wasn’t initially part of the “sale pitch”, but I invite you to look for that information on the Internet.

    Progressively, each game update became a stressful event that could potentially change rules players were used to. I also have to mention that bugs were also a thing, but at least we had good support from developers through their ZenDesk account. I opened a few tickets, and most of them got closed at some point.

    In mid-August 2017, developers at Hello Games made their first big update, called “Atlas Rises”, which reworked the story entirely (as I previously wrote) and had a major impact on my playthrough. The update introduced bugs and incongruities that are still present today. The most important problem (to me) is that the people who had previously completed the only mission of the game (The Atlas Path) had to redo it entirely, especially because of the new rewards tied to its completion. In 2022, the “bug” is still present for whoever plans to load an old save from 2016 (or from the first half of 2017).

    Since late 2017 / 2018, developers are not closing ZenDesk tickets anymore, and they keep releasing game updates with new features that nobody ever asked. Free updates are nice, but they are bittersweet because a lot of old bugs are still unaddressed years after their appearance. Also, a lot of people complained when developers changed the way farming (which wasn’t announced in 2016) would work, or when they introduced energy consumption that broke existing built bases. Finally, in 2019, developers switched a core component of their game engine (an “API”) from one technology to a more modern one, which made the game literally unplayable for existing players who had very old computers. In 2022, those people still have to buy a new graphic card (or even a new computer) to play the game they bought between 2016 and 2019. What other game did that, I wonder?

    The story that was OK in 2016 is now annoying and acts as a tutorial instead of a proper story. The gameplay and the level of communication between the players and the developers are regularly changing without any explanation and without any acknowledgement that they are effectively disrupting player’s enjoyment of a full-priced game. Those two arguments demonstrate that No Man’s Sky isn’t a finished game, and I think that anyone who’s thinking about buying this game, even in 2022, should be well aware of the situation.    … Expand

Plus there is a hint of possible improvements & new features in the horizon. I really hated the lies about the game though, the videos on YouTube are just despicable... Nonetheless, I love the genre, andI like the game, however it wastes the huge potential its concept contains. However, if you go into it with hype, or high expectations from trailers, yes you will be totally disappointed. The progression from surival to exploration to mastery of the stars.

    However it fails on some basic design flaws:

    * Why does almost every trader, explorer and random alien you meet look and sound almost the same.

    * Why do you have to discover all the elements or basic designs. Any high school student can name a fair amount of the perodic table. So why can't the scanner in the game identify basic elements.

    * After your first couple of dozen worlds, you realize how much sameness the NMS has.

    * Do you really need 16 quintillion planets to explore when creating a slice of the universe with a few hundred worlds would occupy one's time for a while. And one could put more resources into creating more engaging worlds than alot that look like rehashes of the one's you have already seen.

    * Random starting points are okay, but aleast make the starting world a little more newbie friendly. The first two times I started a new game I started on a radioactive planet with little oxygen.

    * Why can't my ship scanners locate elements and plot them out for me, why must I hack relays to get the knowledge that should come from a decent onboard computer.

    * No Autopliot or Fast Travel

    * No real focus or compelling reason to get to the center of the galaxy. If you want to put that as the focus you could easily say humans just got FTL travel and you are one of many explorers to do the Star Trek thing aka Seek out and explore bold new worlds    … Expand

    This game is not bad, also it is not fantastic. I have an enjoyable time bopping around the universe in my ship, then gathering resources and building new things. If excitement and fantastic action is what you are looking for, try another game. If you like a decently solid exploration game, give this a try.

    Si bien todavia no llega a ser perfecto ni ser el juego que prometieron, se acerca bastante y creo que se merece una segunda oportunidad.
    Lastima que internet nunca olvida y siempre va a quedar con esa mala imagen.

    Recent updates have improved the game immensely and certainly regained my interest. This definitely was one small step for No Man’s Sky but will still need a giant leap to regain popularity and get into a different light with the community.

    In my opinion the game should focus on improving the survival aspect of the game.
    I think with the recent updates implying that the developers are willing to improve and rectify their mistakes. I will encourage people to support them purchase No Man’s Sky to help get this game to its potential which is revolutionary for its genre.    … Expand

    The graphics don't get progressively better at higher settings which they should. Even on lower settings the game looks fine, so turning up the settings for little to no gain in graphics while halving your performance.

    The tutorial portion of this game is an insane chore and doesn't feel engaging at all, it becomes very tiring, very soon, when you have to find sodium which is spread who knows where on a planet, this "tutorial" never seems to end, and no, it didn't help me the story a single bit, I had to go on to the wiki to learn about the different characters. There is no clear line in between the tutorial and the actual story of the game, and it doesn't help when the game seemingly decides itself about what mission you are going to play, you interact with an object and it adds another mission to the list and changes your current objectives, this is very obnoxious.

    Gameplay wise, the game is exactly what initial reviewers suggested, Minecraft but in space, and I am not complaining at all. It is fun to explore different planets and there moons just for the view. Finding materials can be a chore since you don't have an economy outpost scanner or whatever its called installed in your ship.

    The saving mechanics of this game are very poorly designed, I still can't figure out how to manual save properly, there have been times where I've exited the game only to find out later that I've lost a huge amount of progress and all that copper that I gathered.

    The crafting is absolutely horrible in this game, trying to construct a basic house feels like bashing your head into a concrete wall, twice. The game can't figure out that a floor is meant to be in contact with the ground, the flattening tool doesn't work, expanding areas in a ship lead to weird structures hanging in mid-air, the inventory management is absolutely broken, there is absolutely zero sense in how the game calculates the amount of storage you have. On top of all of that, the game is insanely hard to play on mouse and keyboard.

    This idea is amazing, but it managed to amaze me and disappoint me at the same time. But honestly, no matter how much the developers try to update this game, its now far too late, and the gaming community has generally lost interest in this, like what is happening with Cyberpunk 2077.    … Expand

    Perhaps it is the best redemption story in gaming, but its not like we have a completely different game now, NMS still feels boring and limited and I would rather play a game with a few planets that are custom made than explore quintillion of them here.

    After 9 hours of playing this game, I ended up kinda bored.

    To be honest, since I'm not a fan of this genre, I'm surprised since most of my time playing it was good. My 2 biggest critiques are the uninteresting plot and the sameness around the planets.     To be honest, since I'm not a fan of this genre, I'm surprised since most of my time playing it was good. My 2 biggest critiques are the uninteresting plot and the sameness around the planets. I loved to explore them, but they start to feel the same too fast - for the time it takes to beat the main quest. Speaking of it, the plot could be better. Looks like an excuse to make us play this game's main factor: crafting. If you like it, sure, It will be good. Otherwise, there is no reason to keep playing this game for too long.

    As I said, in the beginning, everything is new and interesting. I liked to play this game with a friend, sharing my thoughts, and visiting his bases. The graphics are cool either, at least in 2.5k res. The gameplay in MK is washed, mainly on the starship. On dual sense works well.

It needs updates quickly but sadly those updates can't just be addons, and extra game mechanics like 'owning a freighter' or 'base building'. The core mechanics of this game need to be radically remodeled. They need to swallow their pride and accept that their vision for what this game should be (essentially a text-based journey to the centre of the universe with a fairly boring backstory involving the handful of races) is far wide of the mark of what people were expecting or hoping for. There's an entire universe here, it should have been a canvas for people to create their own stories, playing as pirates, explorers or traders. You know the three main play styles that were much touted before the game launched. Combat is overly simplistic, with no skill. I mean, honestly, it's incredibly poorly conceived. You actually have to open your inventory for example to restore your shields... Trading is equally shallow and badly executed. Elite this is not. You'll struggle to even find a previously visited star system. Space stations, incredibly repetitive as they are, sell a handful of items and in small quantities. NPCs are just static loners waiting for you, the only person who seemingly will ever visit them, to turn up and give you a blueprint or something. Even exploration ends up being largely disappointing and falling short. The creatures and plants are far more repetitive than advertised. Some of the more interesting ones in the trailers aren't even in game, and you'll probably never see some of the AI bahaviours from the trailers, like herds fleeing together or migrating in single-file columns.You'll see the same plants over and over again, same with the crystals, and every cave is identical.

    This game wants you to rush to the centre, not explore. It's a solid grind with occasional pretty views to distract you. It wants you to read its puerile sci-fi text rather than actually experience something meaningful in-game. The ship is a struggle to control, and the game runs poorly even after several updates.

    Updates and more importantly MODS can and are improving the game, but as I said, they need to go back to the drawing board in key areas and I'm not sure they'll do that.

    4/10.

    This game is not at all worth 60$. It's a broken, unfinished, messy game that looks far deeper than it is. If you want to explore a vast, procedural universe you may as well just go buy starbound for a fraction of the price. You can even play that game with friends.

    The review is simple: It's a incredibly open explorer. So many places to go, and only a handful of things to do when you get there. Beautifully boring.

    Game has much potential, but we'll have to see if they can deal with the early problems to take us someplace great.

Wanna explore all the systems or even head to the center? Well good luck cause you'll have to literally use a pen and paper to keep track of your progress and compare 'distances to the center' to decide where to go next. Best part yet, wanna use a gamepad? (Obviously the Xbox version), Well too bad because the game doesn't bind all the functions to the gamepad and won't let you do it either. Achievements are extremely intrusive and literally make you have to stop playing for 10 seconds or so just to see 'congrats you've taken 100 steps!'. The stores aren't explained at all, the story is vague which is fine and I obviously can't complain about it yet since I haven't played long enough to give it a chance, but there is an issue where there isn't a way to track story progress, which is VERY irritating.

    Though the game is pretty fun, with some optimization for PCs and MANY QoL updates, the game would be deserving of a 7 or 8. There is plenty to explore and you have complete freedom to succeed or fail by your own hand, exploration areas are massive and the music is very good if a bit repetitive. They don't hold your hand which I believe will be a positive in the future as people are going to constantly be discovering things they didn't know. I personally don't recommend purchasing until at the very least they make it run better and add some QoL updates, though I will definitely be playing it for now. Also I'm not experiencing the absolute chaos that others seem to be with crashing and horrible tears ect. I run a pretty decent PC as well, though nothing insane.    … Expand

    Most of the gameplay consists of aimless wandering and exploration. You need to be interested in exploring for its own sake to get anything out of this game. As you collect resources, you can upgrade your various systems to help you survive and explore more easily, and to get off your starting planet, and eventually to other star systems. There are goals in the game, but there's little incentive to pursue them. Also, there's little diversity in the game. The planets are procedurally generated, but the number of interesting things you can do on any planet is more limited than you might expect.

    My computer's only barely capable of handling the game on minimum settings, so the sound was usually either choppy or absent. The graphics were okay, but the game handled far-off objects weirdly. The control scheme was sub-par: it was often confusing or cumbersome. And there was some kind of memory leak that forced me to restart the game every hour or so, with long load times.

    My worst experience was when I made a hyperspace jump and lost the story path between systems. It took me probably thirty jumps to randomly find another anomaly and get back on track. Do not reject Atlas at the start, and don't stray too far from the path of anomalies/black holes/interfaces that the game starts you on.

    I had fun playing it for a little while, but it eventually became a slog, and I only continued playing to get the last few achievements. Overall, I'd recommend picking it up for no more than $15, and expect it to wear thin after maybe 10-20 hours. If this game interests you, I'd recommend Spore instead, which I really enjoyed. Spore has better-defined goals and better gameplay overall, though the exploration is a little weaker than in No Man's Sky.    … Expand

    I don't own a beast computer, but the simplest problem solving (changing fps cap to 60 to match monitor) fixed it, so I can run the game on full settings with a i7 6700K and a GTX 970. It really isn't that hard, and the game runs 60fps, MAX SETTINGS.

    The game itself, is a little underwealming. There is a dangerous habit forming among developers to release an unfiinished game at full AAA price, with the promise of adding content later in updates and free DLC's, and this game is no exception. Following the lead of games like Overwatch and Starwars Battlefront, this game has launched with a interesting premise, but little content to ween people in for the long haul. The planets are interesting, and while environments vary slightly, the biggest change on each planet is usually the colour scheme. The animals are weird, but in the end, quite forgettable. There isn't really any standout features from the 30+ planets I have already visited.

    The computer port is another feature that has let down users. The HUD is horrendous, and difficult to get the hang of. Weird keys have been used for important features, such as the letter X being used instead of scrolling on the mouse for changing weapons by default. There is also no tutorial to explain a lot of the keys, or what needs to be done at all in the game. I understand that the game is meant to be "thrown in the deepend with a crash on a random planet", but the fact that the game doesn't explain how to charge life support seems like a fatal flaw for new users.

    Overall the game is interesting, but the PC port is very poor, and the graphics extremely disappointing considering what our PC's are capable of producing. The controls and HUD is disappointing, there is very little instruction, and the game play is unfinished, and repetitive.    … Expand

    It's an ok game if you haven't been listening to the hype. It's a nice and simple space sandbox that can help you kill a few hours when you don't want to invest much brainpower in to your game.
    It's no Minecraft and depending on your preferences, you may find it relaxing and maybe even fun.

    The game itself has no real purposes: paths for Atlas and Center of the Galaxy are little more than 2 of the infinite jump combinations available. No real quests, duties. No survival (you can survive anything by just digging a little hole with 3-4 plasma grenades...which you can recharge with little cost).

    So, why am I giving 5?
    Because you can actually squeeze 15-30 hours of fun (if you like exploring), and I think that the only real problem is the price: if it was 20€, NMS would have received way less critics.

    And since it's almost impossible now to evolve a 20€ game into a 60€, NMS is going to die tragically soon.    … Expand

I finished the Atlas quest which I found a bit silly and a am about 150k lt years from the core and have no desire whatsoever to make the rest of the trip to end up in a new galaxy, so.... done.

    I find it a nice game to chill out in, but not for getting my heart racing, driving me crazy trying to achieve something, or bringing a lump to my throat.
    But the £40 price tag is a far, far too high.

    There are both positives and negatives, but lets start with the things I liked:

    I love that you don't know anything about your personal back-story in the game. You start on some random alien planet after having crash-landed recently. Your ship is damaged, which means you need to go out into the unexplored wilds and gather resources. Thankfully your Omni-tool - oh, I'm sorry, it's actually called Multi-Tool - comes equipped with a mining laser, so you will have an easy start. Iff its fuel ever runs dry, it is possible to hit destroyable objects with your fists instead.

    That's basically what the first few minutes in No Man's Sky are about. You go around randomly destroying stuff like plants, rocks or crystals and use the resources to fix your ship. Once that's done, you'll have a much easier time getting around on the planet, but be aware that most starts will use up a chunk of plutonium. The first hour in the game was the period I enjoyed the most and although most planets reduce your suit integrity over time, there is plenty enough time to never be in much of a hurry even without any suit improvements. Unless you lose track of time and forget going back to your ship, which has happened to me right at the beginning, go figure ;)

    Lastly: bearing in mind that the developer is a small company with only 15 employees, the graphics are not an issue and the huge scale of the in-game world, thanks to procedurally generated content, is mind-blowing.

    Lets take a look at the negatives now:

    Although you have a vast freedom of movement and action in this game, in practice you will soon end up doing the same things in a repetitive cycle of advancing your character and belongings. While no game is the same, the different starting positions and the rng both play an important role, the only viable goal in mind and the general order of things to get there is soon understood. From then on it is a long grind: you gather resources, then you craft bypass chips, which are used with signal scanners to locate outposts (possibility of finding a better Multi-Tool) and drop pods (expanding your suit inventory).

    After both have gotten too expensive to bother with for now, upgrading your ship is the next step in improving yourself. Even if you won't use your ship for anything else than a transport, the increased storage on board will still be a very desirable feature. It's too bad then, that upgrading to a significantly better ship takes a lot of time (often flying half-way across the planet to find a crash-landed wreck), resources (the list of stuff needed for repairs is extensive, you should write that down and keep a supply on hand) and patience (in my time in the game, I only ever found ships with one additional inventory slot, so going from 15 to 48 will be a long grind).

    It's really too bad then, that the other, more mercantile version of getting a better ship, is just as repetitive and boring but a lot quicker. Once you find an access terminal to the local market planet-side, you can basically print money as much as close-by resources allow. Early on, it's most efficient to gather iron and plutonium, then create as many free slots in your suit's inventory as possible and fill them up with crafted bypass chips. They sell at a decent profit, compared to just getting rid of the resources on the market. Rinse and repeat the whole thing in as many locations as you need to until you've been able to afford a maxed suit inventory and a superior Multi-Tool. Soon you can earn cash by the millions to buy the first 40+ slot ship you stumble upon.

    There is one thing I can already recognize after having visited only two space stations and half a dozen planets. The colors may be different, the plants and rocks may vary in design and even animals will differ from planet to planet, but it all feels and plays exactly the same. Even space stations are identical and always only contain one visible NPC.

    I'm given to understand that there are three races in the game and you must work on each reputation by itself. That's certainly nothing revolutionary, but the method of learning the language certainly is. It makes some sense to learn a foreign language word by singular word, but the process soon gets very tedious. It's also badly balanced, because you can endlessly grind with an NPC once your reputation with the race has gained a certain level.

    In summary: No Man's Sky has the potential to be a very interesting game, because the base is strong. Unfortunately, it all seems so repetitive and gets boring fast. The excitement of looking at alien landscapes can only last so long. What the game needs is mods, but will that be possible? I don't know.    … Expand

    ... and yet, since its release, I clocked in more than 40 hours and play whenever I can.

    There is a delicate narrative subtly pushing story, should you accept Atlas's path.
    There are mysteries that make you want to discover them (Who are Sentinels? What is Atlas - especially when you find your first Atlas interface? What is in the center of the galaxy? Where did Korvax come from? Why are Vyk'en regularly battling Sentinels?)
    Each Monolith you unfold tells you either a piece of encountered species history, or a short story about yourself (my favorite one is the one when I encounter my mirrored image, who is identical to me except he has a better omnitool - and we trade them and I indeed get a better one!). Or, is just an interesting little story. These remind me of short sci-fi novels of 80s - they are very well written, intriguing, and can surprise you with fantastic things happening in them, though they are only short texts on the screen so if you don't like reading, you're missing vital part of the game.
    As you travel and visit all the buildings on-surface - Data Centers, Production Facilities, Abandoned Buildings etc. - you have a chance of discovering recipes for crafting new materials, including Atlas Pass V2 and V3, though I am yet to find any of the aforementioned.
    If you're lucky, you will find a broken down ship on a planet's surface and should it be better than the one you own (as was in my case!), you can repair it, transfer your cargo to the new ship, and fly off, sparing a lot of cash in case you wanted to buy ship of similar properties off an alien.

    So, is it worth a buy?
    No - if you expect Mass Effect in an open, proceduraly-generated universe.
    Yes - if you can overlook some technical issues and still have the kid in you, that instead of focusing on how the game is working, simply enjoy the story and want to unveil its secrets. And - let's not forget - can spare 60€.

    I give it 5/10 - 6/10 if the optimization issues are ironed out.    … Expand

There are not enough side missions or clearly lined up tasks to drive you onward on your main mission, traveling to the center of the game.

    Technically speaking the PC launch was about as bad as it can get. To start you off the title screen experiences frame drops as "No Man's Sky" flys towards you which leaves a bad impression. After the game starts up you can expect massive fps drops to the single digits when, turning too quick, transitioning from space to atmosphere, loading in the next procedural landscape while flying, and many other times. When there weren't massive fps drops my fps held stable around 140 with everything on High/Ultra at 1080p. Once there a few patches I have faith that the fps can be salvaged and be stable, but it is in embarrassing condition for a launch of a $60.00 game with so many delays.

    Visually the art style and design is very interesting and creative. Every planet you land on has a different color pallet with unique shapes, landscapes, and creatures. Unfortunately the game does not portray these visuals efficiently. It feels like the game was ported directly from PS4 as the graphics are almost identical. 1080p with all settings on High/Ultra looks like it is 720p on Low settings. There are no options to change render distance so you will see jarring pop-in textures. FOV is capped at 100 so you have to edit files in the game folder to get it higher. With all the potential that there is to push PCs to the limit he graphics just look disappointing. Missed opportunity to make up for other downfalls.

    No Man's Sky is great step forward for procedural generation in video games, but that's about it. It feels like a tech demo that they forgot to add a game to. This is an experience not a game. If you have some free time to kill and want to wander infinite landscapes just basking in the beauty of alien evolution then No Man's Sky is right for you. If you wanted a video game, then keep on looking. I never expected this game to live up to hype created around it, but I also never expected it to fall so short of being good at all.

    In its current state the game is worth $30.00 at most. If you're reading this you should wait until it goes on sale for $20.

    I enjoyed exploring my first few planets and naming my first few critters very much. Swimming, diving, jetpacking, spellunking and all that. At one point I climbed a mountain at sunrise and said to myself "this is the most beautiful view ever, what a game!"

    I actually like the look of the game and I had great fun on the night of release.

    Sadly, after exploring twenty more planets with different but somehow familiar looking creatures on them and appreciating the beautiful but similar vistas, I found the exploring part less and less thrilling. Not good when this game is all about exploring.

    The game generously offers a gozillion worlds of this boring dejá-vu adventuring. Guess you could slog on for a while and end up with the meanest ship in the galaxy (and the biggest exosuit). But what's the point of that? In the end there is not much else to do...

    The crafting, isnt it challenging or rewarding? Not pretty much so! Just collect, build and install upgrades that in many cases doesn't do squadoosh.

    Compelling characters and interesting, scary or funny alien encounters? Nioerp! (Gek word)
    Aliens and their culutures are fairly well done and they look ok, but posess no personality whatsoever. Furthermore there are only three species (and you) in the entire universe. What!?
    (Now I will go into a bit of rant.)

    Hey, how about "procedurally" (very fancy coding only known since the sixties), generate aliens instead?
    No, that won't work, it'll still be the same old aliens' bodyparts combined in bizarre ways,

    You should always look ahead, so perhaps in the distant future this game after patches and DLCs, will be more entertaining. We will see, but it's unlikely that I ever will consider NMS a great game.

I would personally like to see some sort of terra-forming and base creation, as well a better map and ways to connect to other players. Think of it as a mine craft where you're attached to the entire world and other people can land on a planet you've been too and gaze at structures you built. In addition perhaps some RPG elements could really help this game out, the ability to truly have different classes, a real in game economy, and some actual affiliation with different groups. Even making this into a 3D version of the palm classic Space Trader would be great. Ultimately this is a good foundation that could with a lot of work be made into something incredible.

    On the technical side of things, simply editing the max FPS rate and turning off v-sync fixed all my performance issues. It is not a breathtakingly stunning game either, but if they added more content that wouldn't matter. Music isn't that spectacular either.

    For now I will continue to play and enjoy this game myself as I let my imagination run wild, but I will not recommend this game to anyone. Perhaps for around $15 bucks I'd say, "Yeah if you have every other game around 15 bucks and you need to buy something." I hope to be able to amend this review in a few months time.    … Expand

    Gameplay can become repetitive very quickly due to the game's lack of depth and content. Yes, it is vast thanks to the rather impressive procedural generation that it uses, but it is still procedural generation. The game only as 2-3 GB of content, and this can become very apparent as quickly as two hours in. Once you've seen and done the limited amount of original things you can see and do, gameplay becomes samey and boredom can set in soon after as the game quickly becomes nothing more than a grinder. Many people don't mind this grind-like gameplay, and I myself sometimes don't mind simply exploring some planets and mining some materials to improve my equipment. However, this barebones gameplay will be very boring and displeasing to many other people, and the amount of content that it offers should definitely not be priced so highly.

    There are also a number of performance problems. I have a pretty high-end PC but my framerate drops below 60 when I'm entering a planet's atmosphere or sometimes randomly via hitching, and my framerate ranges widely from 60-120 in all other situations (max settings 1080p.) Also the controls, while decent, are poorly implemented when it comes to flying the spaceship, which is quite a pain to do with a keyboard and mouse. Keys are fully rebindable as far as I know though, so at least there's that. Also the menus are fairly easy to navigate, however it should be noted that changing any graphics options (even changing the resolution and window size) requires a game restart, which is ridiculous. One last quick complaint is that I personally think the max FOV should be a bit highter (right now it's barely good enough for me.)

    I could go into more detail about all the game's problems, but there are plenty other reviews for that, so I'll just cut to the chase. No Man's Sky is a fairly enjoyable space exploration survival/crafting thingy (assuming you can run it at a decent framerate), but is certainly is NOT a complete AAA title worthy of the $60 price tag, so my advice would be to wait until this game gets a serious discount before purchasing. I'm glad I didn't pay $60 for it, and I'm sure that if you ever pick it up for a discounted price or share it off a friend, you will think the same.    … Expand

    I will give you a nice analogy with some metaphoric expression : No Man's Sky is an empty vacuum you just jump from a system to a system and wasting your time, by the time you play this game you get older and older and then your wife leaves you behind, sneaking, and sleep with other guys , while you are exploring some virtual planets building your virtual home for yourself alone like being disposed in this world.

    To be honest, the game developers have no idea what's going on in real world, because they spend most of their time at the basement and isolated, alright, I respect their effort as they want to make some money but their concept about real world is entirely unrealistic.    … Expand

    If you like playing games like e.g. minecraft (Which is also dislike) and rarely reach the point of asking yourself "Why the hell am I doing any of this"    This is hard one.     I heard this game improved a lot since launch so I was excited to check it out. Sadly, it's a fun game plagued by crashes and stutters. Maybe by 2026 it'll finally be finished and playable? I'm just glad I played it on game pass and didn't actually pay money for it.

    – Space is too unrealistic, too colorful and too cartoonish as well. Planets are always unrealistically close to each other. 95% of planets are very rich in life forms, which makes them soon enough boring and repetitive, as the procedural generation algorithm seems to work the same on most planets. In real life it's the opposite - rich planets are extremely rare and that's what makes them so precious and magnificent.
    – Stars (suns) in systems are just unreachable sprites. You cannot reach them and burn yourself down as in Elite Dangerous.
    – But guess what you CAN do in this game... You can breed, select and ride some stupid Spore-like animals. You can basically have any animal as your campanion which would pleasantly go after you in any harsh environment that require you to wear an exosuit (!) It's not No Man's S-K-Y now! It's a f*cking Spore.
    – Spaceship dogfights with pirates get boring and annoying pretty quickly, so you only want to end them asap.
    – I'm not saying NMS should be as realistic as Elite Dangerous but neither for 5-year-olds.

    MULTIPLAYER
    – Playing with friends is a nightmare, because you cannot invite them to the party from the menu. You should find them in person IN GAME. And it's not always easy to do, because even if you are at the same location, you are not always going to see each other. Moreover, it's easy to lose them from the party for no reason or when they get too far. Besides there is actually not much to do together. OK, there IS an option to join your friend's world instantly from the menu, but it never works in my case. Generally speaking, the game just wasn't meant to play together from the beginning, and that's very noticeable.
    – Developers could have created an awesome simulation in a living galaxy with real players, an economy, cohesive missions and so on... with a few main planets with some headquarters of guilds or something like that and so players could build their own cities. If someone wouldn't want to interact with other players, they could still fly away to some uninhabited far far away planet. Instead we have 256 galaxies with trillions boring procedurally generated planets with almost no chance finding another player. Players spread all over the worlds doing their senseless sh*t. What's the point in such multiplayer? None. There is only one way to randomly meet a real player and even many players - in Expeditions, because all players start on the same planet and have similar missions and routes, and that's great, but that's another problem...

    EXPEDITIONS
    – Expeditions are like small events with some new added staff and some kind of quests with rewards after completing them.
    – So, to me, expeditions are the most boring and pointless addons in my game experience ever. First of all, you have to start a new game in a new save to begin the expedition. So till now, you would have had 9 save games with some progress in each, but none complete with all the content the game provides (unless you have literally no other interests in life). No sense to me.
    – Expeditions bring no cohesive lore quests nor fun. Just random missions like find/kill 10 creatures, build some new random buildings which developers added or travel somewhere for no reason. That's exactly what Expeditions are in a nutshell. Ok, sometimes you get some cool rewards when you complete the expedition, but my God, how boring and pointless it is to make it to the end.

    SUMMARY
    No Man's Sky had huge potential but unfortunately went in the wrong direction. The main problem the game has is there are too many unnecessary and half-done features, while important ones (as for the planets and cosmos exploration game) are too weak or not implemented at all. It's still a decent meditative sand-box time killer, rather for single player unfortunately, which gets quite repetitive (especially if you start new games because of new Expeditions). If you don't like Minecraft-like gameplay, this game is not for you at all. After 184 hours spent in the game, I have only one regret – this journey might have been much more interesting and epic.    … Expand

    - Sean Murray not promising **** that was never in the game in the first place

    Other than that the game is boring after a few initial hours, full of pointless resource gathering, visiting run-of-the-mill procedurally generated planets and generally having no sense of accomplishment.

Because you need it to explore. Setting that aside.. this game could be fun to explore. Except... if you've seen one planet, you've seen them all.    There is potential for this game, but right now it's poorly executed.

    So, as an explorer game, it kinda fails. You can't ever really explore because you constantly have to return to your ship to offload crap. Why are you offloading crap? Because you need it to explore. Setting that aside.. this game could be fun to explore. Except... if you've seen one planet, you've seen them all. There isn't any "large" differences. Just small ones. SO one planet is toxic, and another is cold. Neat. Your suite does the same thing; you have to supply energy to it. Other than that, it's just a name. Toxic, cold, heat.

    If you are expecting a giant forrest planet; nope. I've not seen one yet. If you want to see a dessert, nope. Purple goo planet? Nope, not that I saw. Just the same with minor variations.

No Man's Sky really seemed like a game where the developer had many good ideas but most were never implemented. There's really no purpose or motivation for you as the player to continue playing.     Boring and repetitive gameplay, no gravity difference between a moon and a planet.
    Horrific interface and menus.
    4/10 instead of 0 cause i like the idea, but this is more like a tech demo than a real game.

    No multiplayer, quite repetitive, and not really worth "exploring" since most planets follow the same basic concepts. There's no really a sense of awe when you reach a planet after the first couple of days playing, since you will instantly think "oh, it's this pattern again". I give it a 4 because it's actualy fun for a weekend, I might have given it a 5-6 if it was worth 20 bucks instead of 60...

You start on a planet with hostile conditions, and are supposed to learn the terribly ununituitive, and badly explained basics under pressure, while you are slowly dying. Such a bad start, really...

There is just a problem: The annoying grind and constant need to manage your inventory make it almost impossible to actually explore something. You have seen everything. I can get a classic linear game such as Tombraider and there I can actually see and explore more things than in this game. Grinding down "quintilllions" of rather similar planets to mine resources simply is not fun. Also, some people complain "a lot of people expect the game to be something..that isn't'". Point is, for a whopping €60-€70 I do INDEED have a tons expectations on a game. For the same price I can get countless other games with immersive worlds and an incredible amount to see and to do...example again the latest iteration of Tombraider (or, just picking something randomly, FarCry 3 or FarCry 4) where the crafting and collection aspect alone is far better implemented, YET only a small part of a game. Here, it is ALL what the game is about based around a game which otherwise has very little depth and motivation to continue.… Expand

    Not a 0% game like many say, but it's just... boring.
    Walk to get this, walk back to to get that, walk walk walk.
    I'm not going into the false promises issue, but the game itself is just an endless chore of boring tasks.

    So much was promised by the developer and so little was delivered. I can understand now why they were so eager to take down any pre-release gameplay footage. This game is fun for about an hour, maybe two. After that, you will have seen what its universe has to offer. Crafting this is tedious and complicated, not because of sophisticated recipes, but rather because of poor inventorySo much was promised by the developer and so little was delivered. Lack of on-screen information in critical situations detracts from the realism, while a lack of reference of any kind leaves the impression that everything you do is for nothing.     No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]
