Alright I played the game for a while, then I decided to go to metacritic to read the reviews. Which I never do because it reminds me how unfathomably stupid and trite people are. Which I never do because it reminds me how unfathomably stupid and trite people are. The only critiques that have any merit are a few graphical bugs that yeah, should have been taken care of pre launch. But they're minor annoyances at worst. People act like they break the entire game because it sometimes doesn't zoom in the camera to the right spot when you talk to someone.

Then they're complaining that the npc models suck and the dialog is bad which... it just objectively isn't. Especially compared to 1-3. It's using frostbyte engine, sure, but they expect it to look like bf1 even though the environments are way larger.

This guy confused me the most though when he said:

"This installment moves ME more in the direction of a shooter with some RPG elements in it vs an RPG with some action elements in it, that's the big difference, shock for some, and welcome to others"

What? There's *literally* exponentially more character building and development options since not only did they take the class skills from the other games and make it an open character system with ability to switch between skill combinations, but each class has 3x the skills in it.

Dont believe all the self important critics with overinflated expectations and even further inflated egos. If you like scifi and love the mess effect universe that has been expanded further and further upon since ME1 came out, this game will not dissapoint. Maybe wait for it to go on sale or for the graphics bugs to be patched if youre particularly concerned. But this game is by no means a "1".

    And now the negatives:
-The animations are a little more work.
    - It was hurriedly released this month, could have been better.

Conclusion: It's a very good game mechanically, if it gives you a bit like the animations then you patch it.

When I first booted original Mass Effect back in 2008, I was enchanted by the size and lore depth in the game, beautiful planets that I was traversing incide the Mako, diverse aliens, and, of course, story. ME2 and ME3 while also great games were a step back for me, because even though the action gameplay mechanics were considerably improved, the games lacked in other departments like exploration (Mako was taken away, the Citadel shrank in size, etc.) and seamless immersion (elevators taken away).
Andromeda is like a return to the roots for me with is stress on exploration, planets mining, Nomad riding. And, boy, do I adore space travel representation. Some people say it gets boring, but for me its not. The story is also top-notch, IMO, just as writing (it may seem childish to some, but for me it's not; on the contrary, it stresses that the characters, esp. Ryder, are all in all learning how to behave accordingly to the situation when responsibility suddenly falls on their shoulders, and the characters constantly grow). The squadmates are also quite diverse and interesting, and very layered.
As for the criticisms that most reviewers have like bad animations (honestly, upon watching some youtube videos I was a bit scared), bad lip sync, frame rate drops, etc, I haven't experienced any or they were unnoticable and hardly influenced my experience in a bad way. Now, the only criticism I can partially get behind is a lack of alien variety. However, as the game takes place only in a small portion of Andromeda galaxy, as the exploration continues to other parts (in sequels), I suppose we'll see more new species coming up.
So, my honest rating (based on the return of the sense of wonder that was present in ME1) is 9/10.

The game's premise is intriguing from the outset. As you begin to unlock mysteries of the new universe you are confronted with challenging combat and enemies, unique, new characters and quests, and a new squad that has some truly great moments together as well as some hilarious lines.

If you are familiar with the other games in the series, there is a lot of heart from the original game contained within ME:A, but this is a great starting point for people to jump into the series. The new storyline was extremely interesting. The universe and maps are vast. The voice acting is top notch. I'm a PC player, and had almost no technical issues or facial animation issues on my playthrough. Andromeda is at its core about story, characters, species, and relations among its new inhabitants to the new galaxy. I recommend hardcore difficulty for a challenge on the first playthrough, difficult, but not too difficult.

Overall, after a 70+ hour campaign with quests left to do, I felt extremely satisfied and immediatly wanted to begin another playthrough much like how I felt after ME:1. While I was initially skeptical, ME:A makes me excited for the future of the franchise. If you compare the features from ME:A to ME:3, the game makes huge leaps in terms of customization, crafting, researching, incorporating and improving multiplayer, the graphics are awe-inspiring at times. The level design is unique especially among the different worlds (Frost, heat, jungle, and tech). ME:A is made to make the player feel like a true space explorer (For example, yes maps are huge, but that's how planets would be, vast, sprawling with points of interest scattered about the map). ME:A only makes you drive around the map once to unlock drop points or fast travel points to make it simple to quickly travel about the large maps. However, the first time exploring these giant planets is still a great experience to feel as if you are truly in another galaxy.

First of all, the facial animations are not adequate. Yes, there are issues with facial animations as well as the looks of human npcs. Besides the facial animation, a lot of the minor human npcs are ugly as sin, like their modeling was made entirely by a randomising facial creation program, cause no way a human developer made some of those faces and the said "it's good!", no way.

Besides the facial animation, a lot of the minor human npcs are ugly as sin, like their modeling was made entirely by a randomising facial creation program, cause no way a human developer made some of those faces and the said "it's good!", no way.

So now that we got...THAT out of the way, let's get to the good stuff.

The game is...AWESOME. The best feature would probably be the combat itself, it's very satisfying and fun. Of course you won't notice that if you just play a boring ass soldier character. The beauty of the combat comes into play when you play melee-biotic hybrids or just pure biotic, there is a ton of things you can do, from teleporting into enemies to picking up a couple of them and hurling them into other enemies.

The game is pretty much a better Inquistion. Trust me on this, I considered Inquisition as a borefest with tons of pointless, filler quests, and **** combat. And I didn't care at all about the companions in Inquisition. Other than that, it's very similar.

One thing I don't really appreciate is how much downtime you have between action. I don't want a Doom, geez, but come on, I would rather do other things than bla bla bla with a ton of npcs for hours, most of those dialogues being a short version of their life's story. I DON'T **** CARE!

Another thing I'm not a fan of is the interface. It's very convoluted, things like quests are very confusing to get to, as well as the buy/sell interface is horrid. Also, you don't immediately know if an item you buy is going to really be an improvement for you. But I have to admit that after you play the game for hours, you get kinda used with the interface and can work with it, of course as a new player, you'll just get pissed for a while.

The controls are very nice and responsive. As someone who doesn't use a controller at all and couldn't play Witcher 3 because the controls were **** on keyboard&mouse, it's nice to see a game developed for consoles, that doesn't shove a controller down your throat. M&kb is working perfectly.

In conclusion, if you haven't bought the game yet, go ahead and do it, it's tons of fun. If you already bought it and scored it low just because of the facial animations and occasional cutscene glitch...you're a manchild, get over yourself, there are worse games out there that are considered a "success" but which are indeed much worse products that ME:A. Fallout 4 comes to mind.

    I didn’t have to edit a thing
But if you do choose to customize, the game will make a twin version of your character who does show up in your story…
Mass Effect fans seem to hate this entry...
But im not a mass effect fan and I loved it.. I played the first 2 games in preparation for this one and found them to be pretty boring... Mass Effect Andromeda is more of my play style… and without having played mass effect 3, As of right now, Andromeda is my favorite game in the series…
For the fans of the series, there’s a lot here to love as much as there is to be desired…
    And I don’t mean just the aliens…
There are tons of missions to do here outside of the campaign, including loyalty missions like everyone loves from mass effect 2…
But there is a noticeable lack of emphasis on your crew this time around…
Because the story is about making a planet inhabitable for life forms to call home
    Wasn’t really interesting though…
So lack of interesting story, boring crew members... I understand why fans of the series don’t like this game... what about the rest
Lets get the elephant out of the room right now
You cant romance natalie dormers character
I should honestly stop the review right here and give it a 0/10 for playing with my heart like that…
But they did throw some real nudity and booty in here.. So slightly forgivable... but... Natalie Dormer guys...
How could you do this to me?
But the worlds in mass effect Andromeda are beautiful and the campaign which takes about 12 hours one its own is actually fun to run through…
The direction system does a great job of telling you where to go, though the command to show the point on the map frustratingly doesn’t always work…
Not sure on the rules behind when it will and when it won’t…
But the fact that clicking down doesn’t always show you where you’re going to is annoying…
And many missions here are set in an open world that you can explore with the nomad, that drives perfectly…
You also have a jump pack for hopping gaps and doing sick in air kills with your weapons that are equippable with mod slots…
And you can upgrade these weapons as well as unlock special moves for you and your crew with the skill points you get for leveling up…
My only issue with the campaign is the annoying scanning…
You’re asked to scan items way too frequently, stopping the flow and excitement of missions…
And the final stretch of the game feels recycled… and therefore feels like a grind…
I was happy with the games ending..
But the boring final stretch to get there almost seemed unworthy it, especially with a forgettable throwaway feeling boss fight…
I understand why mass effect fans don’t like this game... its very action third person cover based shooter heavy... very few dialog options that matter to make this feel like an rpg…
But if you look at this as just a game without the name mass effect attached, Andromeda is a solid experience…
People have noted animation problems.. but I didn’t notice any in my play through, and besides a few awkward transitions, my play through was fairly clean of bugs
And when you’re done with single player you can hop right into multiplayer where you’ll spend 15 seconds and realize you’re not going to waste your time on this garbage just like ea should have
This mode is a lazy and boring co-op objective based wave mission mode.
Every game developer in the world play uncharted lost planet 2 and lost planet 3 multiplayer
IF you don’t plan on making anything like them in your 3rd person shooter
save your time and money and don’t bother.
Despite the disappointing multiplayer, and disappointing RPG bioware DNA elements…
Mass Effect Andromeda is a solid experience that as a 3rd person shooter action adventure fan you shouldn’t pass up
    I give Mass Effect Andromeda
    an 8/10

Of course the story has many stock phrases, banalities, copy-pastes from sci-fy movies and books. But you can live in this Universe filled with bunch of interesting details. You can feel inside this story. It took 2 hours to me to became a part of the Mass Effect Universe and the next 130 hours were beautiful.
I waited for the game, I watched the trailers. I read everything concerning MEA. And today I am disappointed.
The plot is flat, details are useless, animation is ugly, dialogs are stupid - Bioware have managed to put all my fears together in one game. I cannot see the characters around me because they're not people but ugly plastic dolls. How am I supposed to be inside the story? If some one had said to me that 'Wolfenstein The New Order' would have more interesting plot than new Mass Effect I wouldn't have believed. But unfortunately it's plain true.

I think it gets a lot of hate for being a mass effect game. People say the trilogy had really good characters. Those characters were developed over 3 games and were kinda boring in ME1. I have been trying to look at it more like a stand alone game. The story was compelling and was good at what it intended. It wasn't trying to be the trilogy, it was going for a different feel and I think it succeeded. As for the technicial issues there are more than I like but I think people forget Skyrim, and Fallout 4 for example. Those games had horrible (if somewhat funny at times) and often quest-breaking or game--breaking glitches and somehow those are OK (or at least accepted) and this isn't. Glitches can be fixed, and nothing I experienced was game-breaking and very few required a reload or reboot. Creating a new addition to one of the most beloved game franchises of all time is no easy task. How do you placate die hard fans while still creating a game that invites new and more casual players? It was clear from the beginning of my time with Andromeda that Bioware was attempting to create an amalgamation of gameplay features and mechanics that have been known to work in the past; and I can happily tell you that it comes together well. It was also fairly obvious that Bioware took some pages out of Dragon Age: Inqusition. Both use the same engine, and as we know Inquisition was graphically gorgeous; Andromeda with it's wider range of color palates, effects, and large variance in environment type comes out even more so. The feel of Andromeda in terms of character handling is almost identical Inqusition. Control isn't snappy by any means, but has a flow and a feel that is much more realistic and rewarding that a robotic playable character. Combat for Andromeda is extremely rewarding. The enemy types are not very expansive, however the ways in which combat can occur will vary greatly. It forces the play to be aware of their entire surroundings, not just what is directly in front of them. Numerous times I was focus on a shielded or armored enemy in front of my, just to find that another enemy had managed to sneak his way behind me and was shooting me in the back. Also, the addition of jump jets and climbing/vaulting makes combat much more dimensional and not just for the player. Enemies jump up and down from platforms, constantly changing their positions against you, and the AI does a smart job of making enemy movement feel organic. Of all the things that Andromeda improves on from the original trilogy, the combat is the biggest. Bioware has also done a great job of making Andromeda a deeper RPG experience than the original trilogy. Players are no longer locked into a specific set of skills, abilities, and weapons based on class type. The possibilities for different character build types are massively expansive, and the wide range of weapons, armor, and modifications allows the player to tailor their character to an even greater level of specificity. To this effect, Bioware does some really smart things with how armor, modifications, and attachments can effect gameplay. For example, a pistol barrel attachment that increases weapon damage, but also decreases the clip size for the weapon, or an armor mod that increases shield capacity by 50% but lowers overall health by 50%. This type of stat modification really forces that player to make smart decisions on how they develop their character, and makes the choice of equipment a deeper endeavor than just what looks cool or does the most damage.

As a Mass Effect game, story is extremely important. I think it's important to recognize that Bioware was in a tough position when trying to create a story for Andromeda. To remain canonical, Andromeda had to let go of a lot of details from the original trilogy, which can be frustrating for die hard Mass Effect fans. Also, creating a protagonist threat on the scale of the Reapers in which the player arrives in a new galaxy that is unaware of the players existence is a tough thing to pull off. Overall, the story for Andromeda falls short of the original trilogy. It's not a bad story by any means, but it's hard to avoid the comparison between the level of writing between the original trilogy and that of Andromeda. I for one am hope that the series will continue and Bioware will have a chance to appeal more to die hard fans with a story more on par with the original trilogy, and possible even with a bit of canonical overlap.

Outside of the the story, the only other complaint is the quality of the animations. As most of you reading this are probably aware, Andromeda has some serious problems with character animations. The root cause of this is hard to determine, however it's obvious that Bioware made some major slip ups in regards to facial animations. I should clarify that for the most part the animations are on point. Not perfect by any means, but most of the time are perfectly acceptable for a large budget AAA game. I have also noticed that the facial animations seems to get better as the game goes along with only a few strange hiccups later in the game, however none of this effects gameplay in any way.

In my opinion, Andromeda makes a great addition to the Mass Effect franchise. With a few fixes of some minor issues, the game could garner an even greater response. It's a must play for any Mass Effect fan, or any sci-fi RPG fan in general. Bioware has demonstrated their ability to create amazing worlds that players continue to crave. I look forward to more from Mass Effect in the future and hope that this is not the last offering from the series for years to come.

Other than wanting to constantly shove Liam out an airlock and float the !%@#$, I really enjoyed the game. The game should easily have a Metascore of 90. People like to compare this to DA Inquisition, which had a Meta of 85 (PC) and that's fine, but it is even better than DA:I.

    - Story was tighter and in a way better than ME 3 and probably ME2 too. No lame giant Human Reaper made out of people, or stupid ME3 ending.
    - The motivations of the various factions was way more compelling than ME3
    - Great fast-paced multiplayer
    - good ending / lead-in for a sequel

    Bad
    - Liam
    - They replaced warp with pull on human adept in MP??? Should have been push or lance
    - Probe / Minning exploration from space, ugh!

I give it an 8/10 and am hoping that they somehow improve the human facial animations in a later patch. While it isn't game breaking, it can break immersion at times but overall, it's just one small piece of a much larger game; a game that is worth your time. Expand

On technical side the music is maybe bit worse, but everything else, the new worlds look gorgeous and the atmosphere of the game is better. It took a while to get a hang of resources, special forces, habitability, exploring (fast travel and forward pods are a friends planetside). Overall the gameplay and movement is much better than in other Mass Effect games.

So far I've had one bug where the game once stopped loading which is pretty well (compared to Fallout 4 for instance).

Ryder is better main character than Shephard, the team is best of all Mass Effect games and I like Tempest more than Normandy. Mass Effect 2 and 3 were still more gripping games from the start, but my first days with Andromeda have been better than with Mass Effect 1. Early GOTY candidate for me.

I actually liked Mass Effect: Andromeda, in many ways I thought the story was the one I most enjoyed from all the mass effects. Though occasionally a bit patchy. I did love the humor though. I even didn't really notice the dodgy animation and character models (before patch 1.0.5). And much of the disturbing issues caused by the dodgy animations have been cleaned up. Some of the missions are a bit grindy (having to run backwards and forwards on the nexus was kind of annoying but I wouldn't say it was terrible). Anyway given what I know now, I would buy it again. Hope this helps. Expand

Have been playing it for 10 hours and already found it very boring.

I really can't understand the hatred for this title. Overall, Andromeda just about stands up to any of the previous Mass Effect games. The combat is fantastic, and the worlds and visuals are stunning. Quests are plentiful, and while there are a number of generic fetch/scan quests, there are also a decent quantity of tailored side quests, which develop many of the characters and situations on each world.

I'm left wanting more, and that's a good thing.

I loved this game.... After 88 hours of a wonderful experience I'm satisfied by what this game showed me. At the beginning the game has a slow pace, but it was predictable as almost every new universe of an RPG game. It had lots little bugs that (most of them in animation, which was fixed later).

Mass Effect and its sequels were the first games that really gave an experience where Sci-Fi-movie met 3rd person shooter and RPG with well developed storyline. As you played with the main protagonist you really felt that every NPC and squad mates had a background and personal motivations which were revealed through well written dialogue. Actual game-play was functional enough (though restrictive) but I saw it only a way to forward the story. Antagonists felt like a real threat and they had their individual motivations to fight against the player. Afterwards I've imagined that Saren and Illusive Man would work fine as a playable characters in their own separate games.

ME: Andromeda stumble at crucial points but here's the biggest issue: Weak narrative. In ME-trilogy dialogue was there to push the story forward. If it wasn't then the dialogue built the characters and gave an insight to their background and motives for the player.

Andromeda fails the narrative and there is a reason for this which is weak directing by Mac Walters. He is a great writer (no doubt about that) but doesn't seems to know how to enliven written to a game world properly. It's a pity because the story, characters and dialogue has a huge promising which is never used properly.

After the poorly delivered story there is only a 3rd person shooter-RPG which is great but repetitive. Visuals are also great but unpolished from time to time. I had not game breaking bugs but a lot minor ones mostly with animations and scripting errors.

Summary: A huge disappointment for a Mass Effect fan but a decent shooter-RPG for a newcomer.

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
