BW needs to hire competent people to make their games in the future. this is not good. i miss the good old games like Kotor, Jade Empire, Dragon Age: Origins. back then the company had a passion for making great games with a fantastic story. now the company has been infested with sick people who focus more on pushing their twisted political and social agenda rather than making good games.

I gave this game many chances, but the crazy amount of bugs and bland story made me turn on one of my favorite franchises ever. I just did a mission twice and the Kett boss vanished both times leaving me without a way to complete the objective. The badly designed save system prevents me from loading closer to the boss, so I have to do the whole thing again. Hey Bioware, if you're not going to deliver on the story and characters because of your SJW agenda, at least make sure the game works. This garbage doesn't compare to the real Mass Effect we know and love, let alone Witcher 3. Try harder next time and maybe I'll buy the sequel to Andromeda with all the DLC for $1!

The multiplayer can be fun with friends though. :)

This game is bad, really bad. I don't care much about the animations (which btw are really horrendous) or graphics. I was just looking for a nice fresh softcore sci-fi story. Instead, what I found is an actually simplistic plot, with ATROCIOUS dialogues, incoherent situations, plain characters, senseless events... summarizing: a stupid, superfluous and bad made childish story.

    Pros.
The worlds and graphics are alright, nice ambientation there (although the local fauna only experienced a funny chromatic variation depending on the planet). The gameplay is nice and fluid but in my opinion the encounters and fights in me2 & 3 where much more epic.

Anyway, I just made this metacritic account to complain about wasting money in this precise game.
Not that I care for paying 50€ for this load of crap but what I regret mostly is contributing to make these kind of "sub"products viable.

Anyway, I thought this game was about saving humanity and kind civilizations from previous trilogy, maybe because destroying the mass relays ruined our galaxy and made us escape to Andromeda in a one way, only chance mission for survival. Something like that, something dramatic at the state of Shepard. But no. Spoiler: I wake from a cryo pod to find out I am a tourist guide, called pathfinder, meant to promote random planets. What if I never woke from that pod? Nothing. My twin or anyone with a decent IA would have done the job. End of the drama.

Not a 0 game, but a painfully successor.

Also, the graphics and face animations, after the patches, were okay for me. Sometimes I really liked the ruins and other buildings and environments they created - although there was a bit too much repetition, such as in the enemies.

My main disappointment was how they made NO DLC's for the game. And they really really DID need to have made at least one DLC to resolve a certain aspect of the plot that I won't give away (spoiler) - but people who played the game will know what I mean.

It's as if Bioware said "Oh geezz - a lot of people don't like the game., so to heck with them and let's just abandon the game and #$#!!! doing any DLC!".

This is not a way to treat your loyal customers Bioware! Also, and this is coming from someone who is pretty open-minded - they really need to tone down that SJW stuff which is just pissing people off. Just my two cents :) !

I played all three original Mass Effect games over and over again, and I like each of those games for it's individual merits, including the third game, which I felt had some of the best narrative strokes of the trilogy (ending notwithstanding, but then I see the whole game as an ending, and not a happy one at that - and that's what I like about it). With Andromeda, I was looking for something of a more open blend of the best elements of the original trilogy. I have to say, though, that you should be careful what you wish for. Bioware have made the combat more dynamic, but most of the weapons feel insubstantial and the enemy selection is a serious weak point, with way too much repetition, especially compared the heightened variety of encounters in ME2 and ME3. The inventory system is a return to the systems of ME1 in the worst ways - it is convoluted, dull and unclear. Narratively the game simply doesn't have the urgency or the character development to keep you engaged through what is admittedly a fairly long campaign, which gets off to a slow start and continues to drag through a series of dreary Halo-esque cyber-caves, conveniently respawning encampments of bandits that result in firefights that are over in seconds. The new enemy, the Kett, come across as ultimately very generic, and the new friendly alien species lack any real charisma or interesting backstory. This is definitely more Star Trek: Nemesis than Wrath of Khan.

In the end, it would seem the game's troubled development caught up with it. The writing is inconsistent at best, trite at worst, something that really wasn't such an issue in the original trilogy. There are flashes of brilliance in there, and some amusing dialogue, but the selection of squadmates is uninspiring for the most part. The game tends to veer into feeling like a slog that, although occasionally striking visually, strangely also shows it's age despite sharing the same engine as Star Wars Battlefront. As is notorious by this point, the games character animations don't appear to have improved at all since the last trilogy, which in itself was driven by an aging Unreal Engine 3. It's inexplicable that the game simply doesn't have better visuals in this department, and it's jarring with the otherwise decent fidelity on offer. The game simply doesn't have the sense of urgency that the last games had, especially by ME3. Bioware have gone too far to provide lip service to fans of the original game, at the expense of the narrative and pacing lessons of ME2 and ME3. ME1 was a very flawed game that had a special atmosphere that persisted beyond it's faults. Andromeda doesn't really have any excuse by this stage.

On the plus side - nice exploration and combat.

For an indie game it's okay, if somewhat pricey.

For a AAA Mass Effect game it's very poor.

People scoring it 10 or 1 are taking the piss. It's not that good or that bad.

    It's just okay for £17.

It's just not a full price game. It's just not worthy of The Mass Effect name and certainly not worth a second play through.

Treat it as a cheap generic scifi action RPG produced by a small indie team, none of whom were writers and it is okay for the bargain basement price.

Just a short summary of some of the shortcomings/annoyances:
-Planet exploration is a hassle. Too many cutscenes (And you still can't skip most of them, even after patch 1.05)
    -Character animations are still buggy
-When engaging in conversation, the conversation option doesn't even nearly reflect what your character will actually say.
-A lot of quests is still broken as of patch 1.05. Reloading your latest save usually solves it for most quests though.
-Some very annoying side quests yield very little reward. Take for instance the quest where you have to scan minerals on a few planets. After completing that quest, you got a 200 credit reward.....
-Some side quests/assignments feels like a chore. I know the ME4 development team said they wanted to imitate what the Witcher 3 did with their side quests, but the quality of the side quests in ME4 is not even near The Witcher 3.
-The Quest tracking system is nothing short of horrible.

I see lots of 1's, 2's and 3 ratings in here, the game is really not that bad, but I do believe this just underlines how disappointed the ME fans is with this game

Ok let's start off with the obvious, the animations in this game are horrible and I think more time should have gone into testing this game before its release, this can also be seen in the amount of bugs and glitches the game has (we're talking Skyrim level here).

As for other negative aspects; The story isn't spectacular, the lighthearted options (casual/emotional) for dialog aren't that well written; but well delivered to be fair and the user interface has no logical design to it; its honestly just an endless sea of menu's and folders, and and just a personal issue is having to check your email on the Tempest (I know it was like this in the trilogy too but now you have the forward stations on each map, no reason we can't check there) is a pain.

Now that that's out of the way onto what I like about Andromeda, and there is a lot to like:

The combat is easily the best the series has had so far, the jump jet adds so much here allowing the combat to be faster and smoother than in previous instalments, the profiles system is fantastic allowing you switch out your powers/abilities on the fly again adding much more variety to the combat than previous games.

The vehicle sections are also the best series has had so far (which admittedly isn't hard after the Mako & Hammerhead), exploring these vast open worlds is actually enjoyable thanks to the Nomad, while I wouldn't mind having a weapon mounted, vehicle combat isn't really missed. The Nomad handles beautifully and being able to mod it and customise the paint job was a nice touch.

Exploration is great, the worlds of Andromeda are interesting & diverse, each with their own personality, story & dangers. It's the first time in a Mass Effect game I've landed on a planet and thought, lets just pick a direction and see whats out there and ended up in an unexpected situation, this kept me engaged enough to keep coming back.

Crafting, aside from the awful UI I mentioned before the crafting system here is fantastic, with enough resources and research you can build any weapon you want (i'm personally loving my sticky grenade firing machine gun with infinite ammo), and it's the same with armour too, augmentations can grant you a variety of perks to use in the field to boost shields, power cool downs etc.

Characters, now I know that Mass Effect has a huge roster of brilliant, irreplaceable characters from the first 3 games and to some no newcomer can ever live up to them, I understand this but at the same time I found myself getting attached to this new crew, Liam & Cora aren't great but Drack, Vetra, Jaal & Peebee are all great additions to the Mass Effect universe and I had a blast exploring along side them. This is helped by the welcome return of Mass Effect 2's loyalty missions.

The enemies in this game are also good, whilst not as bone-chillingly ominous as the Reapers the Kett serve as a decent villain here, their story is interesting and discovering their connection to the other Andromeda residents gives you plenty of reasons to want to shoot them some more.

The Ending (no spoilers), one of the main things I was worried about going into this game was how it would end, after Mass Effect 3 we needed to end this game on a high note and it does deliver, the final mission is so satisfying and whilst the final boss battle is fairly uninspired the ending as a whole is a positive and a great foundation for future instalments and DLC expansions.

So is this the best game ever, no, does it have problems, yes, but is it a good game, definitely. Whilst not quite living up to the hype following the original trilogy Mass Effect Andromeda provides us with a solid foundation to relaunch the series away from Shepherd and the Reapers, it feels very much like a spiritual successor to Mass Effect 1 rather than a sequel to Mass Effect 3 & I can understand why this isn't what some people were looking for but personally I think it's what the series needs to keep going.
Hopefully the issues I raised at the start will be addressed and patched (I know some have already started) so the game can truly shine but as it stands right now I give Mass Effect Andromeda a 7/10

Ok, now I've returned to the game many months later and now that the patches are all in and the disappointment that there will be no single player DLC has passed I'm revising my score.
The animations are much better, the new additions like returning to the character creator after you've started, higher inventory limit, extra free outfits, new weapons, new mods/augments, an extra romance for BroRyder and a nice expansion of the multiplayer (characters & weapons) are all great as well.
While not fixing all of my issues (the menu still sucks) I'm upping my score to an 8/10, still not perfect but definitely a worthy addition to the Mass Effect name.

Concluding thoughts, for those who are curious:
I was originally critical of the quality of the animation in the game, and I still am, but at least Bioware released a patch which helps somewhat in this regard…somewhat. It’s still apparent the game needed several more polish passes, but I’m guessing that was another year’s worth of work they couldn’t afford, which is a shame.
The writing in this never quite gets past being mediocre. Depending on your personal tastes a couple of your teammates will be fun to get to know, but it’s real hard to avoid noticing how green the writing team was on this, versus the previous ones.
The combat systems allow for a much higher degree of customization than any of the previous titles did, which is neat. If you wanted an ME with better combat, then this’ll probably scratch that itch. Personally, I don’t play ME for the combat, but, yeah that’s a thing.
The high-level concept of getting to colonize new worlds seems super cool...until you realize how tedious and time consuming said process is, thanks to 1001 fetch/alien killing quests, and it becomes especially soul crushing with the realization that most of the habitable worlds you land on will require the same tedious process all over again, and again…and again.
If there’s any advice I can give you, it’s to try and avoid getting too caught up in ground missions, you do not have to finish all of them before completing the main story, especially the ones labeled as tasks, and if you try to complete all of them before finishing the main plot you will likely die of utter boredom because omg, they get so painful to finish after a while. So…you’re welcome.
Which brings me to the next point, the game doesn’t end after the main plot is finished. I like this quite a lot. You can then go back and shoot as many generic npc baddies as you like to finish the god-forsaken busy work they want you to do. Or, or not…
I like the ending, and it almost validates the 2 million times I had to scan things with my hand scanner. Not quite, but more so than I expected at least? Ties into the previous games a bit better than I expected initially too. (Make sure to complete the locked memories quests!)
So, in conclusion, if you’re an avid fan of the franchise, there’s...almost...enough story content here that it might be worth the trouble. Clearly I did finish it, but only because I love the series enough to bare through a heck of a lot of tedium and buggy cutscenes to complete it. I would not recommend it for casual fans of the previous games.
With that said, I think the ending of this game set the stage for what could be a legitimately good sequel. I think they could have done that in 30 hours instead of 60+ but still, there is that at least.
So, here’s to hoping they learn from the mistakes of this release and focus on a more polished, less tedious, story driven 5th game. Also if I never have to see my hand scanner or the nomad off-road vehicle again I’d be perfectly happy with that, that would be fine…please do that Bioware.

    Colourful language aside:
    - Extremely dull story with *very* predictable twists.
    - Horrible writing in comparison to all other Mass Effect games.
    - The combat has taken three steps backwards and feels like a cheap fps, tps hybrid.
    - Despite everything that is this steaming pile of game it has many good critic reviews that will lull hardcore ME fans like myself into a state of thinking the game is okay to purchase- it isn't. I have played ME 1-3 with every DLC and gotten some serious enjoyment out of them, whereas Andromeda felt like a chore. A cheap ripoff following a hollow ME game template.

In conclusion: There's a reason Bioware Montreal is getting axed. There's a reason why every positive user review has to include the phrase "I don't know why people are hating on this game", and there's a reason that bioware is having fire their employees and lie to protect them from getting harassed.

Mass Effect 2 for me was the pinnacle of the trilogy! Here we are now in 2017 with a new game to kick start a new trilogy..... and i'm absolutely shocked at the quality of this game. There will be no personal attacks towards the employees of BioWare here because I know they are a very hard working company. I am not sure wtf happened here tho... First of all Andromeda looks like it had a significant downgrade in the graphical department. Also animations are clearly not up to par with today's standards.. this is rather confusing as this is a huge team of developers with the resources, money and the staff to make this game the AAA title it should have been. There are countless bugs and glitches, poorly written dialogue, frame rate drops, texture problems, lighting problems, shadow problems, even just simply running around looks terrible. Animations: WTF is with the ugly character models? this isn't 2007 anymore... heck The first Mass Effect game actually looks better than this!! This is completely unacceptable at full retail price! here in Canada where the game was made this costs ove $80.. and even $120!!! To put the nail in the coffin the multiplayer is just Horde mode... endless waves of horde mode. Incredibly boring. Oh there is also microtransactions for horde mode.... can you believe it ? I bet you can't.. but stupid people will still buy into it. Gotta get that 10 dollar gun! Anyways I am now just ranting. Hows the story of this game? well its completely forgettable, You really don't care for these characters at all. The sex scenes are extremely awkward and will probably make you burst out laughing. This just doesn't feel like a BioWare game. Lets not forget that in the dialogue options.. It does let you choose but they never say what you want them to say... Its like its on PG mode all the time. Gotta be nice I guess. All in all I'm deeply disappointed in this and I know BioWare tried there damn best to give us a great game, Unfortunately it feels more like they are trying to copy what the first 3 games did ... but the execution of it is sub par. The combat however is tight and fluid when it does not glitch out. There is allot of content in this game, but most of it is rather tedious and boring. It hurts my Mass heart to give this a dislike but it is what it is. In loving memory of Sheppard. This is below Average. 4/10 Expand

I wanted to like this game, but the voice acting / animations was just destroying the experience for me. The game is ok besides the bad voice acting and bad charterer animations.

It could get a better score if EA made any effort to fix bugs in their games. 3 planets in and every save becomes corrupt and won't load. At least I waited until it had been out long enough to be half price, but still, by now there shouldn't be any bugs let alone the same ones they had at launch!

I've sunk almost 60 hours into this game because I'm a completionist and honestly, this game is enjoyable, but not enough that I would recommend buying it without it being heavily on sale. Like, a half off sort of sale.

For some reason they've decided to shift the focus of a RPG game HINGED on story telling and characters to combat and exploration. Exploration isn't a bad thing and neither is combat, but when the MOST energy goes into those things and are still glitchy and bugged even after patches, it makes the game empty on a level the original series never dropped to.

DIALOGUE - There are some really good moments, but theyre drenched in amateurish writing made even worse by lackluster voice acting that sounds like each person was sat in a room, given no context to anything and told to read off all their lines in one day. Too many conversations sound truly off. I'd say Jaal, Drac, and Peebee probably have the best acting and sounded like they tried. Which is sad.

CHARACTERS - It takes WAAAY too long to get a feel for other characters. Its honestly sad that the most interesting conversations and revalation of personalities are hidden in side quests, emails, when you walk around the Tempest and happen to hear your crew interacting, and the codex. The **** codex. I was excited to go talk to all of them when I got on the tempest, but only a few of them really interested me.

QUESTS - Honestly, some of the quests are rather fun and make you feel like you're really making a difference and doing something. Like there are certain quests that are just so **** satisfying. But, the majority are busy work or seemingly heavy/important quests ruined by lackluster acting/writing. For instance, there's a mission where you need to save people within a certain time period. If you fail, only one person survives. You don't suffer any consequences. The remaining scientist is vaguely thankful and runs off. It seems meaningless.

Another good example is during a main quest for the main plot. You have to make a tough decision. Save one person versus a group of people that one of your crewmates have an attachment to. If you decide not to save the group of people, it feels meaningless. Your crew member is angry at you when you try to talk to them (ONLY ONCE THO) but it feels so flat, because the next time you talk to them they're calling you kid and gungho to follow you. THAT and it makes it seem integral to your enemies next move. But its NOT.

TL;DR: they basically took the feeling you got from encountering the end of ME3 and spread it out through the whole **** game.

COMBAT - This is one of my favorite parts. Which is sad. It can get repetitive but it's dynamic, exciting, and I mostly look forward to fighting new enemies.

PLANETS - They're suuuper pretty for the most part. However, you can tell it's half assed. The same animals are found in literally every planet you visit, but with switched color palettes. Like, what's the point of making highly different enviroments if the animals and problems are all essentially the same on each planet.

PLOT - Could've been better for sure. Again, it seemed like it fell to the wayside. They pushed the political and dire situations (which are the MAIN situations) to the side, and just sort of focused on the Archon, the main villain and beating him to his endgame. The game makes sure to point out how obsessed with Remnant tech the Archon is, but honestly this game is JUST as obsessed. Instead of focusing on how you and your other main cast are trying to navigate salvaging and coming through successful in a very dire situation, really immersing in the things that have gone wrong and pulling through, your REAL goal seems to be to kill the Archon. Right off the bat. While you're heavily crippled all around.

The very beginning mission where your father dies is sort of unbelievable and set the ton for a very sloppily written plot.

honestly, this might have been a bit harsh, as I'm still playing this game and do feel myself getting immersed and lost in it, but that's because I'm **** disappointed at how lack luster this game is compared to even ME3 which was arguably the worst one of the trilogy (not including the ending of course).

£50 for a half finished game. The story was good. Graphics were awesome when they weren't bugging out. combat was good (when the AI worked) crafting was long, the skill trees were alright. amount played was worth the money but it still felt like it was half finished. If i could get a refund i would this game was not worth it for me

Beautiful game bogged down by bad facial animations and a few underwhelming characters. Ryder is simply too different from the previous antagonist, causing mass dislike from former fans. What really made the game for me was the new crew. With the exception of the human cast, all have diverse personalities that meld wonderfully together. Jaal, Drack, and Vetra are great additions to the cast and I could never decide who to take.

As for the world building, it felt empty. Before release Bioware boasted about the game's size, which proved to be too much. Too much empty terrain with no landmarks to dot it. The endlessly spawning bad guys didn't help. At least in Inquisition when you cleared a camp it stayed clear, instead of 10 more kett running in when you turn your back.

Facial animations. Never Bioware's strong point. The only characters who had problems were Sara Ryder and Miss "My face is tired". As for the latter, she has gotten a face lift and someone taught her how to emote. Sara...... is fine if you don't use the default face.

Overall, this is the definition of a meh game. I just added the extra points because of how much I love Jaal and his romance.

This is not the Mass Effect we were promised in E3. This is a hot mess full of bugs, awful voice acting, and terrible face animation. You can't emotionally connect with any character as their facial expressions seem like they're oblivious to their situation and surroundings. I often found bugs during combat, and the story is not as significant as the original Mass Effect series was. ThisThis is not the Mass Effect we were promised in E3. I was talked into this game because the previous games were supposedly amazing, but if those previous games are even twice as good as this I won't be buying another mass effect game.

I'm 100 hours into this game. 100 hours of fetch quests, terrible animation glitches, and trying to find a reason to actually care about the "Andromeda Initiative"...

It is so boring I want to get high on something. Anything. THAT is how bad this game is.

Thank you EA for finally killing Bioware off. Especially for having the temerity to offer this on a test basis. You openly advertise how bad it is, with issues in graphical optimization, animation, story (or lack thereof), lobotimized AI, and downgraded customization (from prior games made on same engine), while expecting something other than a flogging? Time to check yourselves into rehab.

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
