From all Bioware Games this is the worst I hardly qualifies as an RPG. It copies the bad aspects from other franchises like the terrible (clickfest) UI, cheesy/simple combat mechanics, terrible writing/dialogues and zero-consequences kind of story and totally forgets about the strengths of former Bioware Titles. (Great Story, well written Characters, meaningful choices, consequences, tactical combat, challenging (Non-Random!) encounters.

You could take any ubisoft openworld title, put mass effect textures on it and it would probably even play better.

The graphics is not even as big an issue as most people claim, Bioware never played big in that area - but they always looked okayish. But abandoning the mass effect franchise in this cheap copy cat / milking cow attempt is very low, even for EA standards. I suppose EA has just again qualfied as worst company on the planet - again.

For all those who are asking themselves "what the hell happened with Bioware"? The answer is./ It's not Bioware... It's Electronic Arts the responsible of this **** game. Since Dragon Age 2 and later the next games of Bioware were bullcrap, and it was the time when Electronic Arts bought Bioware. Electronic Arts are responsible of this ****

Restricted worlds (world boundaries),and very few you can actually walk around on.

The ultra rare weapon/armor mods are not even worth the time and effort as they honestly suck as well which doesn't make them ultra rare, but rather ultra crippling. Kett weapons all look like sex toys and armor make you look like a big bug, skills that are actually useful and neat are only a handfull(mainly bionics and even then only like 4), combat skill tree is bare to the bone in any sort of actual abilities to use and if you want to have any sort of decent performing weapons you have to spend far to many points into this tree. Grenade, shield and concussion shot are your only options there. Tech tree is pretty much in the same boat too.

Pros: Combat is far more enjoyable and the worlds are at least pretty along with the visual effects. Cora's TnA.

In short, wait till this comes down to like 20$ then MAYBE it'll be worth the buy, maybe sooner if modders can fix what they broke or wont, minus animations and the dialog writing. Glad I only spent 5$ on this in which EA and Bioware will not see. Either be a true Triple A studio and Publisher or don't sell your products for anything over 30$. I've seen indie studios do better and that's sad.

It truly pains me to write a negative review for Mass Effect:Andromeda, as the Mass Effect series is my favorite RPG series. The characters, the plot, the pacing, the voice work - it was all superb in past games, and I can even forgive Bioware for the botched ending to ME3.

This game, however, has serious flaws, right from the beginning. First, the animations on faces are just not believable. They seem to have taken a step backwards, even if the facial textures were excellent. The character creation process was stilted and difficult to understand - it took a while to figure out how to use a different default custom designed face. The voice over for Scott is just not up to the standards we've grown accustomed to.

The decision to set the Initiative's departure date before Shepard's heroics in the rest of the series destroyed most chances for connections to the other games. The links to Liara - the young, naive Liara, not the hard nosed Shadow Broker that we all came to love - felt contrived. The relative lack of ties and easter eggs to the first games, in and of itself, was a major let down. In a series where the story is so key, this story has so many plot holes that go unexplained that it's hard to accept it at face value. Ryder makes first contact with an alien species that suddenly speaks English without a single explanation in game as to how he can understand them or they can understand him? Seriously? How many first contact scenarios have sci-fi fans seen over the years, from Star Trek to every aliens-visit-earth movie? This killed whatever suspension of disbelief I had and magnified the other deficiencies in the game for me.

It's not all bad. What keeps the game out of the 1 or 2 score area is combat - this is as good as it has been in any of the games. It was nice to get a rover back, ala Mass Effect 1, although the mining/scanning device could use some work. It's just not that intuitive or fun.

Overall, the game just didn't live up to my expectations, which were high - but that was because all of the other games in the series delivered. I'm still going to play the game and will probably finish it just to say that I did, but I don't feel the burning desire to complete the story, nor do I feel the same personal bond with these characters that I did with Garrus, Liara, Shephard and others in the first trilogy.

This was a disappointing game that didn't live up to my expectations.

Just like fallout4 they removed the rpg. They spend to much time making the system work on 4 years old consoles and didn't spend any time for pc users. How can the graphics look the same on a under powered console as a higher end pc? No thanks

Terrible face animation, stupid plot, stupid protagonist, stupid antagonist, stupid NPCs, stupid gameplay. Authors don't appreciate the Mass Effect's universe and don't know anything about space fiction. One of the worst AAA games ever made.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this game is just weird in too many ways. Bioware claimed they learned from the complaints about DA:I yet they included more fetch and go there quests than ever. Now if this is your thing, you can probably look at it as a positive because there are really loads of them, dozens upon dozens. Yet in the age of Witcher 3 in which even the smallest quest had a good story and often times good and satisfying mechanics this is just outdated and this style of MMO quests is what a lot of people complained about with DA:I so:

    - loads of fetch quests
    + loads of fetch quests

Weirdly enough the game looks very much worse in many ways than DA:I, especially when it comes to facial animations, environment, movement etc. It also performs much less well even though EA has loads of experience with the Frostbite Engine (DA:I, FIFA 17) and all those games look quite good and perform very well even on low end systems. On the flipside, if you do have a really good system this game can and will look absolutely stunning HOWEVER most people simply don't own a system like that and it is inconceiveable to me why a game that uses an engine that generally performs well on PS4 and XBOX One as well as older systems all the while giving you really nice graphics suddenly is so bad on the technical side (animations, loads of glitching and even some getting stuck, massive frame drops)

    - a lot of technical issues which seriously impact the whole game experience
+ can look stunning if you can afford a system priced around 4.000 Euro

A major problem, also to some degree criticised in DA:I is the very immature and corny writing. A lot of the dialogue is aimed at people aged 21 and younger, Loads of superficial babbling about nothing at all and just in general very much below the Bioware Standard of even DA:I. They also abolished the Renegade and Paragon system in dialogues and replaced it with professional, optimistic, realistic and funny comments from which to pick. Unfortunately they just trashed the original system and did not actually replace it with anything. Most of your choices will still lead to the same outcome. I had that happen several times. Yes you are given the chance to respond in the tone you want but you won't be able to say no or yes if the quests demands you accept or refuse. Also noticeable is that in a lot of dialogues with teammates and others you are limited to realistic or optimistic approaches. One example would be a discussion with a crewmember about her faith. You can either say: yes I also believe in a higher power or absolutely rebuke her and say: nah there is nothing like that. It feels forced and really rude especially given that: I don't know but I keep an open mind on all possibilities or I do not believe in a higher power, but I won't look down on you for believing would be viable options here that a normal human being might choose. The real problem is though that unlike Paragon or Renegade your Ryder doesn't actually form a personality which leads to different answers or a different general behaviour. You can answer professional all the time but your character will still act quirky and youthish which simply means that you can not really form him or her. Furthermore a lot of the voice acting is just plain bad. Not in low quality or what not but a lot of the voice actors simply sound bored and are just rattling off text.

    - corny and bad writing
    - limited choices in dialogues
    - bad voice acting on a lot of important characters
    - no personality system

The companions aren't bad. If you are looking for a new Garrus or Wrex/Grunt or Tali or even a new Joker... no luck here. Like I said they aren't bad but this is a serious step down from DA:I especially given that Freddie Prince Jr. absolutely killed it as Bull. He was incredibly good and so were the guys who did Dorian, Varric and the gals who did Sera and Cassandra... there is nothing of that quality here.

    - mediocre companions

A lot of core mechanics are just plain bad and or boring. The User Interface (to assign skills, research, find your journal etc.) is unorganized and a mess even for a console optimized UI. It's hard to find stuff, to organize or to even remember where stuff was. The scanning mechanic is very tedious and boring after a while and is basically just some padding to hide the fact that you are on yet another fetch quest. You can not check your mails via your omnitool, you always have to get back to your ship which not only means entering the ship but also means taking off with it and watching an unskippable cutscene. Planetmining is back and it is as boring as in ME2 and gets more tedious by the fact that every time you want to check a planet it zooms in too far as a graphic effect and then zooms out again, every time.

    - the core mechanics of the game are flawed

I would advise waiting for the game to drop to maybe 20 Euro/Dollar before buying it, it's simply not worth 60 bucks.

The ME story line has always been about story over visuals, even in max settings graphics are a mixed bag. Immersiveness of an RPG has been abandoned here more due to issues & focus on being a shooter than keeping to the successful mix of the previous triology. The writing in this feels more fan story, but that would be an insult to some awesome fan fiction. The writing is very forced, with huge disparity between characters, all of it lacking the subtle world building of the previous trilogy. In MEA visuals range from pre-ME1 to beautiful [a great shame that one moment at ultra settings its gorgeous and within seconds you have sub par graphics, efforts show on planets and the tempest but elsewhere its shockinkly distracting, including the animations], voice acting is clunky [on the verge of cringeworthy] and you'll be compelled to skip some conversations, the open world doesn't work a as invisioned at implentation and plenty of bugs. The menu systems and lack of quick save add to to the lack of polish and feel of a game console import, quicksave and lack of mini map becomes mind numbling annoying. MEA just feels awkward or forced. It almost seems ambition and reality of timeline in dev didn't work out. Also you can rush through this game and I think they should have stopped that or discourage it more as was found in ME2. In its simplist form you can get a real difference by listening to the ME1 Soundtrack against the MEA one. You kind of just get a 'meh' feeling. I think over time and progression, even if the main antagonist storyline improves, much of the detractors start to really grind, wear you down and get bored. It really does feel like just another shooter/rpg and lacks orginality [with some obvious repeats from the trilogy], although a new era some stronger links or rationale behind the main story might have helped, its just rather 'weak'. In addition to this, im reguarly finding gaps in knowledge, wondering how someone knows that or when was that explained? Rather big holes exist in the story line, I cant decide if this is lining up an MEA2 or forcing completionist games, however many exist in cut scenes in dialogue. There are hints of issues in the 'real world' appearing at times.

I've tired to keep an open mind that this is a new storyline and to give it a chance but in real terms this doesn't feel like 5 years of dev or classic bioware. If this is a start of new trilogy they have no option but to follow up quickly with a MEA2 and sort it out as many will feel that lack of wanting more as was found with ME1. Many wanted it to be more similar to ME1, but the genuius of ME one was polish, critical storyline and a moderated open world, this had not been achived in MEA. Some may even call it DAI in space. Its hard to bond with characters or even be that fussed with the storyline and sometimes events, plots and quests seem a drag or no real placement in the context they are set. You get quickly overloaded with fruitless side quests of no meaning or little relevancy. Loyalty missions reguarly have little to do with the team mate and youve hardly got to the stage of feeling any loyalty to them. As we can see from reviews, it's not bad, it's not great but 'neutral', a mixed bag which I think is the worst kind. Many of the old team left bioware and the ME franchise and random people bought in, and it shows. It lacks the maturity of ME1 and worst out of the 4, it certainty will be amongst biowares lesser titles. We all accept some bugs and issues but MEA sits on the dangerous grey area which has split the gaming community. A remaster of ME1-3 would have made some happier. Do I feel gripped to play this or rushing back to play it again or continue it from day to day life and work, no. This is a signficant difference to ME1-3.

In all it's a mixed bag and for many it will be the overall feeling of the game. My gut feeling so far is disappointment but most of all it lacks 'soul'.

Give it it ago, but be prepared. Many will feel they would have wanted to face the reapers than run away to andromeda. What a shame we had to wait 5 years to find out.

The Turian voice acting... is ok. The story doesnt hit me as well as the old series did, nor does the overall concept of it. Very few enemy types leads to repetitive combat. They took some of the better elements that mass effect 1 had, and tried to combine it with the elements that mass effect 2 did right... And for some reason, they failed at all attempts.

The nice thing is it is more open world, the movement is very nice and well tuned (least on the player side, animations are still hilarious at best), and the research system feels worthwhile... downside is everything is repetitive, very few enemy types, weapons feel completely useless, etc. I would say it has potential to be good... but right now, the damage system is my biggest complaint.. IT FEELS LIKE DRAGON AGE INQUISITION, WHICH I DISLIKED ALL TOGETHER!!!!!

The game is full of bugs, on cutscenes, combat, gameplay, they can be encountered anywhere. Some bugs are easy to ignore, but some are unacceptable, for a 2017 mass game, its simply trash. Character Creation was a HUGE waste of opportunity, not much to do here, because ALL HUMAN FACES look mediocre, and ALL females faces are ugly as hell!

After that, you jump into the story, which is a critical disappointment, a NEW GALAXY that felt so empty. ''3'' new races, which the kett are the only interesting race with variety and mysterious presence in the galaxy, but the other 2 felt irrelevant, the angara felt like its near extinct by the kett and the remnant are some robots programmed to kill and guard stuff. The races felt very effortless. The andromeda galaxy doesnt stops there, what else does it has to offer? Empty planets with little to almost no life. The plot felt like a huge fiction in my opinion, a 10 man squad fighting a war and a galaxy at the same time, lol. And the writing was very weak- mediocre.

So the exploration is not bad, because everything is nice to see and all but the side quests ALL felt like annoying fetch quests, i never really cared about any of them, witcher 3 side quests are masterpieces compared to these. The combat is the only thing i loved in this game. I liked the guns and armors, but i wanted more. The shooting and cover system was good, but the only problem i had with combat was the squad AI on HEAVY gunfights. For unlogical reasons, they would stop firing for a few seconds to either move/jumpjet or simply meditate in the middle of the fight, i noticed this because since i was playing on hard, i was starting to notice that my 2 squadmates where at times useless. At some points, they felt like decoys but their abilities where decent like the omni grenades which are a must on heavy gunfights with lots of enemies. The enemy ai was a pretty good experience, i always felt like they where trying to kill me, because they always try to flank the sh#t out of you. Overall the combat was pretty memorable.

In conclusion, the combat succeeded its predecessors, but the story, the ''new'' galaxy, animations, the character creation and female faces are an insult to MASS EFFECT and its entire fanbase including me. I bought and played this game after watching countless negative reviews, thinking that it was all just a simple ''hate train''. No, is more than that, it is by far the biggest disappointment ive seen in gaming to date. Buggy, ugly and bad. Watch out CD Projekt Red, u dont want to be bought by EA, lol.

Along with everything else that has been repeated, that one thing sums up the utter lack of imagination the EA Interns had when designing this game.

The characters are mundane and are easy to dislike. The only character of the entire crew I found appealing and interesting at all was Drack. The writers should absolutely be ashamed of themselves. The game can't be taken seriously when none of the characters themselves appear to be taking anything seriously. Nearly every aspect of the games writing has this touch of light hearted foolery to it which is incessantly annoying.

    2. They completely removed being able to customize your companions/followers with weapons and armor. It was an aspect that I thoroughly enjoyed (and no one complained about) so I'm not exactly sure what they were thinking by cutting it. Companions skill trees are the only aspect you can customize. The skill tree is so small though, that you're given the illusion of choice here. You may as well put them on auto-level because it makes zero difference due to the skill tree being insignificantly small and insignificant regarding actual decision-making. You can't control the use of your companion abilities. It only allows you basic attack/defend commands, and most of the time its questionable at best if the a.i is actually following your attack commands.

    3. The illusion of choice. The Dragon age inquisition dialogue system was literally pasted into this game, which is to say that you don't really have dialogue interactions at all. Not really. Paragon and Renegade is gone (WHY?). Now are the days where you pick a dialogue option and get the exact same cutscene/outcome as any of the other options. This game is a total downgrade compared to previous mass effect games.

    4. Multiplayer. It's relatively the same as ME3, only its worse. It's a 7 round horde mode and each round is randomized to be different, such as holding a certain position for an amount of time or just simply surviving the round. You get credits for completing it. That itself is a bit mundane, but that isn't its biggest problem. The issue here is that literally nothing here is balanced in terms of characters or rewards. Weapons and characters you start with are quite literally BETTER than any of the ultra-rare classes or weapons you get from opening the 100,000 credit chests (the highest-tier chests). The sense of reward you get from playing the multiplayer does not exist because the reward system here is completely broken. If we're being honest, none of the classes or weapons are balanced for the hardest difficulty either.

    5. The animations. Not much to say that hasn't been said already. A high-school dropout amateur could have done better.

    6. Loot-progression in this game does not exist. Starting from level 1 you're given a fully completed crafting list that has everything already in it. You don't find or buy new recipes for crafting either. You don't find super-unique loot that isn't already in your crafting list. It just makes the whole idea of loot meaningless in the game. At least dragon age inquisition had unique gear you could find, there isn't even that in this game. When you kill the enemies in this game they have a chance to drop loot, that you basically can't do anything with; which you sell to vendors; in order to craft from a crafting list which was handed to you at level 1. Just... WOW.

    7. The side-content that makes up the majority of the gameplay in this game (10 hours of main story compared to 80+ of side content) is just mmo-filler fetch quests, basically dragon age inquisition copied and pasted here almost identically. If you're looking forward to maybe some interesting content on any of these large maps that you can explore, outside of the main story mission, they do not exist.

    8. Abilities. While combat shooting mechanics and snap-to cover was an improvement, they also downgraded combat significantly by only allowing the player to have a maximum of 3 active abilities. So, the game has no level-cap, and you can't manage your companions abilities, and you're only allowed 3 active abilities that you can only swap out at specific locations, and not during combat. This design is completely broken and is way too restrictive. I don't know what the purpose is of allowing the player to select any skill in the entire tree if they're only allowed to have 3 active abilities at max. Not only does this design contradict itself, but it makes for an overall unenjoyable system.

    9. The total obvious lack of any QA testing. The amount of bugs regarding missions and how many graphical anomalies there are in this game is actually ridiculous.

I could see people reviewing this game as a 5, at MOST. For me, it's a 3. I've played too many games and experienced too many systems/mechanics at this point. Being a programmer myself I just can't believe the lack of creativity or passion here. Nearly every single aspect of the game has been made pointlessly mundane and downgraded compared to previous mass effect titles.

I won't list all the bad about the game. You can read other reviews
and everyone is saying the same thing. This is nothing but DA:I in space.
Same thing every planet. I think the thing that really got me was EA having to make a political statement in this game. I am so tired of politics, I play games to forget them, not have it stuffed down my throat. The game gets a 2 for world

really really poor story - in the old mass effect humanity found these gates that can jump travel called the mass relays - ok cool

in this new game you are suddenly able to mass relay by yourself in a new galaxy that is only 600 Light years away

if it was so easy , why dint the reapers do that , cleans the other galaxy i mean they did it every 50,000 years

what the **** is 600 years for them ?

story is BS from start to finish - huge gaps in story line -

compared to mass effect 1 where i had tears when i saw shepard becoming the first human specter and going over the galaxy using the mass effect relays to solve the impeding doom - now that was story line.

this game has nothing close to it .

plus games is buggy as hell - and not the small type - huge bugs

i was kicked out of the game a few times for no reason , i need to come within a inch of a object for the vegetation around it to appear , this is on ps4 !!!

its acting as if it has no ram

i am a hardcore fan of most rpgs , loved the mass effects and i am from Montreal ( main studio for this game )
and i cannot give it more then a 5 -

wait till it drops to 20$ not worth it otherwise

Just tried the PC version, it's even worse than the console versions that are already very problematic, not to mention that the game is absolutely awful (please check my profile for the review of this game on PS4).
On PC, even with a high end pc, this game still has problem running properly, and it doesn't really look at all much better than the console version.

I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this gameI really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting characters, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like the different teams of people that worked on different parts of the game failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

Starting out it goes wrong real quick before you even enter the game. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about, male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the preset CC faces are one step above abominations. Once you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very simplistic CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the preset face.

The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past. Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up, nothing mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original developers dumped it for a reason; it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating, Sudoku, really? and mining for things, well I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better?

Amazing how they managed to screw up one of the greatest series in gaming history. Bioware is garbage now that EA owns them. What a sad excuse for a game.

I will skip the issue of animation because they do not matter much, despite the publicity they caused. Fundamentals of storyline rape universe, only reason for trip to Andromeda may be desire the creators to cut off from mistakes committed in the trilogy. Simplify the game, (probably to be more affordable) use more tactics or manage the team during the battle became superfluous.I will skip the issue of animation because they do not matter much, despite the publicity they caused. Scanning planets and side quests, can result in fatigue in its repetitiveness.I was not able get to know the whole story but after ten hours I can say that unfortunately some dialogues are quite naive or even violate the laws of logic. It's discouraging. In my opinion the new Mass Effect takes a step back towards trilogy in every aspect (of course beyond the graphics). So sorry to see such a fan like me on what's going on with the brand, as with the movie SW the Force Awakens movie. Earn as much money how you can without worrying about quality because it sells so much ... Expand

Man this games facial animations are so bad, it's hard to play with these horrible facial animations, the story and dialog and the dialogue wheel are just as bad. AI gets in the way, and MP is terrible, it's 2017 and we still use p2p on PC? C'mon Bioware give us dedicated servers and a server browser list to easily find games, Bioware please fix the animations.

This shadow of a game bioware calls mass effect shouldn't come as a surprise. We all knew that bioware was no longer the developer it once was when it released dragon age 2 and demonstrated its love for the mass effect series by giving us what they call a good ending for mf3. They have balls releasing this **** game and putting mass effect in its name, ill give them that.
    **** **** GAME!

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
