I found the initial problem for a lot of users is that the first dozen hours are slow as you set yourself up and learn the optimal controls/ tactics/ lore

But when you've invested time you get left with a beautifully slick product that is as much a work of art as it is a game. The combat - which previously seemed slow and boring - is AMAZING. Eventually, when you''re a high enough level you can create multiple combat profiles you can swap between depending on which enemies you face - affecting your abilities, powers, ideal weapon choice etc. The movement in this game - initially sluggish - when you master your sprint, jump jet and dash enables you to whip in and out of enemies and to go to scans/loot. Even the NOMAD presenting problems as you learns its capacity and buy its upgrades.

The beauty of this game is it is a RPG and you're in a new galaxy with no idea what's going on - sounds pretty similar to your current position as a gamer. This actually helped me engage in the game as i wanted to delve into the THOUGHT-PROVOKING storyline/ themes (spoiler - they are amazing and the ideas the story presents might very well soon be real-world issues: automated workforce/ AI?!. I found once i slowed down my gameplay - took time to explore the the various dialogue choices all around our starting position and even reading the codices! When you've got your research, development, leveling, scanning, combat, inventory, looting, dialogue and movement sorted the game is beautiful: it just takes time to get this(and your ship) set up.

I think the reason this game is getting poor reviews is due to a 'fast food' culture we see ourselves in: Max enjoyment in minimal time. But if you take time to appreciate the game and story and learn the mechanics you're left with the most incredible game I've ever played.

This game has so much complexity and depth - delivered so well that it's a massive disappointment seeing bad reviews for a AAA game. Opinion: i'm worried this might lead developers away from creating games with such complexity and depth until you are left with dumbed down console ports.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to say that I understand the negative reviews as the game has more than several bugs especially the desert map which is really bugged and force you to reload your saves for about 60% of the missions because an NPC will be underground or something else. But apart from that, this game is fabulous, I love it! The story could be better but the exploration and the fights are pretty good. If you try to finish a planet as much as possible and don't swap too often between planets (which is a real pain) then this is an excellent game is maybe not the best PC Game of 2017 but would definitely be in the top 10. Bit tired of medieval open world RPG's, ME-A is unique in this category where practically there's no other AAA Sci-Fi, RPG, open-world(ish) game. This is a reason enough for me to rate this game a good score. Just for the effort.

Yes, it feels like it's a rushed game, like released to early or like you're playing an early beta but ME fans like me are thankful to Bioware for continuing the saga.

All and all the game together with its flaws is not bad, it's GREAT actually. It's not like the flaws are preventing you from enjoying this great game. It's just that people are comparing it to The Wicher 3 which is perfect and ahead of any other game in any category. Yet, I lost interest in mid game in The Witcher 3. I didn't care enough for the story or the quests to continue it. Maybe because as I said earlier in the beginning I'm tired of medieval, sword fighting look-alike games anymore.

But, there's another reason I rated it higher then maybe it deserves. It's the first ME game that's open almost as other open-world games and it's a Sci-Fi and has 100+ hours of gameplay.

Inventory and equipment organization could be better. Maps can be better and a minimap could be very useful! Some minor changes would be welcomed like the 'M' keystroke to be able to close the map and not pressing ESC twice. And of course the character animations are outdated. But as I said, I love the game, I pre-purchased it and didn't regret it.

Maybe if I hadn't heard so much about it before going into the game it wouldn't have been so noticeable, but it absolutely does detract from some of my favorite parts of the game so far; the cinematic cut scenes. I will also add that all the skill trees and profiles and yada yada yada are just too damn much for me... If Bioware kept putting the same game out over and over again they would get criticized for that. Remember how everyone hated the streamlined RPG elements in mass efffect 2? Now they hate the complexity of the crafting. For the first time in Mass Effect I get the feeling of exploration and in depth crafting. The visuals are beautiful. The combat is enjoyable and the variety of armor, mods, and weapons is awesome. I have not finished the game but so far the story is good. I think with time people will give this game a chance and recognize how good it is. I only hope the criticism doesn't make Bioware simplify and dumb down the next one. There are some visual bugs but so far they have been no worse than the other games in the series. Expand

Let's get the cons out of the way first.

There's animation jank and some buggy UI stuff. The crafting system is denser than it should be. Some of the faces are squarely in uncanny valley territory. There's a lot of sidequest padding. The game is slow to hook you. But once you get used to that, there's a great story here, with genuinely laugh-out-loud funny writing in some places,

The problems with this game can be fixed with a patch or two, and once you get used to the uncanny valley faces and animation issues (took me about 3-4 hours), there's a solid core with a good storyline and great characters.

It's not BioWare's greatest game ever, but even average BioWare games are great, great games.

I've played all 3 previous ME titles many times through and while this isn't quite as good as the previous series (nostalgia could be biasing my opinion a bit here) it's a great game in itself. The vehicle exploration is a joy and the planets are amazing looking. I love the combat system, especially the biotics combat and the sniper rifles. There are some things I'd like to see improved or added to the game that being said. The 'from space' planetary exploration is a bit mundane and lacking a sense of discovery and exploration. The map is a bit wonky sometimes not letting me set my personal waypoints exactly where I click, resulting in me clicking elsewhere on the map until the waypoint shows up where I want it. Lastly, a lack of indicator that you've completed all the conversation tree options on a given individual is annoying, and results in many "Hi"/"Bye" conversations that I don't feel are really necessary if a better indicator system was in place.

Overall, I'm really enjoying the game and looking forward to where they take this game and its planned expansions.

A bunch of morons decided that Bioware made the female characters in Andromeda ugly on purpose to appeal to those pesky SJWs. Bioware is also apparently racist because while there ARE Caucasian skin tones in the character creator, they're not quite white enough which is oppressive to the white male or something. Yes, this whole sorry affair is as cringy and embarrassing as it looks. My conclusion is that these boys were way too young to play any previous Mass Effect games because if they were old enough back then, they could remember that women in Mass Effect (and Dragon Age, for that matter) have always looked quite bad. Hell, femShep in the first and second game looked awful. Her redesigned version in ME3 looked really hot - but only in the cinematic trailer and on the cover art. The actual in-game model looked nothing like what they promised. Bottom line: Bioware is just being the same old Bioware they have always been, but little boys can't deal with it.

With that out of the way, how is the actual game? Surprisingly good, actually. I've sunk about 30 hours into it so far and I'm nowhere near done, but I already love it. The premise is simple: a number of space ships (or "Arks") leave our solar system during the events of the original Mass Effect trilogy to look for a new home in the Andromeda galaxy. Their goal is to search for viable planets and colonize them. The travelers spend 600 years in cryosleep, and when they wake up things definitely aren't as simple as they expected. The Ark the new protagonist Ryder is traveling on arrives more than a year after the others. The Nexus (which is this game's version of the Citadel) is barely alive, several other Arks got lost in space and crash landed who knows where, and the planets people hoped to colonize are deadly. There are also new threats: hostile aliens known as "kett" and "the Scourge", an artificially created space phenomenon that destroys everything in its path. Ryder's goal is to deliver what the Andromeda Initiative promised: terraform planets, build colonies, bring people back from cryo, and create a new home for the future generations.

Now I must mention the elephant in the room: yes, the character models and animations in this game are sub-par, the facial animations in particular. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it sound, but it's definitely disappointing. Bioware games have always had glitchy animations, awkward facial expressions and less than attractive females, but it's the year 2017 and one would hope there was some progress on that front. Alas, we still have Mass Effect 1 levels on quality 10 years after the first game was released. Female Ryder's default in-game model was disappointing in particular, but 30 hours into the game it actually grew on me and I think she looks quite cute.

Mass Effect has always been more about the characters' personalities rather than their looks, though, and Andromeda still delivers. Fryda Wolff as Sara Ryder is definitely a worthy successor to Jennifer Hale's Shepard. She's younger and less experienced than Shepard, and she's endearingly awkward (especially when she flirts), but she's also snarky, funny and pretty cool when she wants to be. Wolff's delivery is spot on and femRyder has quickly become one of my most favorite ME characters thanks to her amazing voice work. The whole main voice cast is very strong. Christine Lakin (yes, the little girl from Step by Step) is shockingly good as Peebee. Katy Townsend is here too for those of us who can't get enough of the Cheeky Scot, and Natalie Dormer as Lexi T'Perro is amazing as expected, though I can't help it but feel her talent is a bit wasted. They brought in Natalie effing Dormer and all they have her do is voicing a minor character you can't even romance. She should have been a squad mate.

There are 6 squad mates in total, all of them likeable and appealing in their own way. Not all of them are as fleshed out as they'd deserve, but Andromeda is just the first game in a new series and I'm sure we will learn more about them in time. You can also romance them as usual, but while the sex scenes are slightly more graphic this time around, they're also very, very awkward.

The game is well optimized on PC, too. I have an old GTX 970 G1 which is definitely not cutting edge anymore, and the game looks amazing with a rock solid framerate at all times. The sound design and music are great as well.

Final verdict: Andromeda is a damn good game. There are things I don't like (limited character creator, confusing mission tracking, crafting system, the lengthy animations you have to watch when traveling from planet to planet, weird character models and facial expressions), but if you get over these flaws the overall experience is enjoyable. Oh, and the new MAKO is really, really fun to drive this time around!

The good: Exploration is fun, feeling overall is good. There will be some memorable moments, trust me. Graphics are good, but not top of the line. There's plenty of quests and stuff to do, so much in fact that you might lose track at some point. Combat is good and feels natural.

The bad: Facial animations are not so good. Dialogues and story are ok-ish, but still could've been better. The game will randomly freeze. Like 1-2 times every 10 hrs or so. There will be some glitches too, see through kind of glitches, but nothing very painful.
Enemy phisiology is rather boring, looks like a regular person with a brocolli instead of head, not very imaginative. I think that going to another galaxy, exploring should've been more of seeing new stuff and while planets do look pretty alien-ish, the actual aliens do not. I think we can move a bit from the bipedal, humanoid forms.... it's getting old and overdone. Let's use our imagination a bit and try more diverse aliens, 4 feet, no head, tentacles, that sort of stuff.

Conclusions: Play for yourself and leave all the haters behind. The game is good and enjoyable. There's always going to be people screaming that something is not good or they want it the other way, but as long as you have fun just don't listen to all the negative vibes around.

Most of the negative reviews are a bit unfair, the Animations where not good, but they got them fixed. Andromeda is giving you more than 100 hours of single player fun. I would give the game a good 7 points, but because of the unfair reviews im putting it up to 9 to even the fields a bit.

Hater hating, gamers playing. Everyone hate this game because they don't like facial animations, but gameplay is very good and evolution ME formula. Its Mass Effect, but new and everything makes better. And nostalgic go **** off, ME3 is not so much good game. I remember on release everyone hate it, now its same witch Andromeda, lets see what happens in few years.

I don't get the modern players, what did they want in good games ? I have been playing games over two decades and I can say only one thing, present players base don't know, what they want. It is about the new settlement in an alien galaxy: Andromeda. In this there are various strange planets to discover and after all to really settle. So survivalable stations are to be built. Numerous difficulties are to be overcome in teamwork. Dramatically threatening dark forces (eg the species of Ketts) the settlers - a tough competition for life resources. Often it is necessary to care for the lives of the peaceful settlers and to defend them. So it is a mixture of tactically challenging adventure and rapid action - not a simply shooting game, but a training forming experience and the hanger of settlers: because rules must be respected, foresight and tolerance are well-maintained values. Thats why it is more than a game with entertainment value. The characters pursue an intelligent mission: the roleplayer as Sara Ryder gets a sense of the responsibility for the many expectant people who are together with her in search of a better world. Andromeda means hope for each of them. This transports the game perfectly. It becomes a very empathetic experience. The elaborate graphics and enjoyable sounds support this. Everything is coherent and Andromeda awakens through the game more and more to life. The gaming scope is gigantic, but to overlook, because there are also clear maps and enlightening log books and so on. Many well-founded and subtle animations make the story an impressive experience. In the end there is nothing less than the survival or the end of humanity - the fate in a new world, Andromeda.

    Update:
If not superficial/trivial reflection is operated, Mass Effect Andromedea will be the game of the year 2017!
The balanced blend of worlds-simulation, scifi-fantasy, adventure, action, culture, fun, seriousness and humanity's fate makes this gigantic HighEnd-Video&Sound next Generation game unique. In substance, multidimensionality & diversity there is actually nothing comparable. Finally the saturated coolness-arrogance-animated characters are overcome and out. The rogues coolness taste is stripped, lovable explorers & trustworthy ambassadors are born. The gamedeveloper team has the courage to unfeigned honest cosmopolitanfigures as peaceful worldconquerors, which is currently most important. The excellent synchronization in so many languages corresponds with this. From all this is MEA a considerable cultural masterpiece in next-gen-Gaming.

This is the first Mass Effect game that I've played and it really seduced me with its world / climate / characters and the plot itself. I also must say that anyone who rates this game below 5 is a pure troll and his/her score is not viable in any way. The developers put SO MUCH effort into creating this world/ all those characters etc, there is so much to do in this game , I can understand that someone may not like it, but this game offers so much that it's not possible to mark it below 5 unless you are totally unfair

However to be fair I must say there are several small bugs (like enemies disappearing after loading a save) and some of the actions are really repetitive or could be done much better, but I undestand that this would take probably twice as much development, but some of the potential is wasted for sure.

Mass Effect... One of the most amazing and immersive space opera's in gaming, ever. Yes, it borrows some idea's from our beloved science fiction classics. But who cares? Yes, it borrows some idea's from our beloved science fiction classics. But who cares? It is a game, not a novel. Our chance to interact with those amazing worlds and people, we fantasize about. That is what made me fall in love with this series. A series that was developed as an RPG game with action elements. But, very important, an RPG game. And that is what Andromeda gave us. A spiritual successor to Mass Effect 1 and i daresay Kotor. I loved Mass Effect 2, but i disliked the amount of rpg elements they took out. But they gave us narrative and character building rarely seen in games.

Then came 3... And nobody was happy. They removed the soul of this series. Catering to the action gamers with an attention span, that forces them to buy cod games every year. It was linear, worldbuilding was non-existent. It didn't provide the experience i like to escape into. Trying to appeal to a public that does not really care about the game.

I have to say, i am pretty disgusted by the reviews i read about Andromeda. People act like it's murderous poison, that someone tried to force them to swallow. Andromeda has obvious problems. But you have to appreciate the love this dev team poured into this. From the unforgiving colds of voeld, to the sad state of the nexus. They tried to merge the best parts of mass effect 1 with the best parts of mass effect 2 and 3. And if you look a bit closer and experience this game. Looking beyond the subpar animations and the obvious feminist and diversity elements forced into it. It is actually a fantastic experience, loads better then 3. I feel like i am in a scifi novel again. Living on the wayfarer or firefly. Observing the shrike or trying to survive a planet like arrakis. Looking beyond it's fairly ugly shell, there is a fantastic experience waiting to surprise you. It would be a mistake to miss it.

    mass effect 2 peu d'exploration
mass effect 3 trop casualisé, trop d'action, bugs,...

Postcard-pretty landscapes is pretty much all that there is good about Andromeda. They serve as backdrops for a boring, cliche-ridden, somewhat demented story with forgettable characters and even more forgettable missions.

Enough of the classic Mass Effect, with enough new mechanics to keep the game fresh. [Hollingworth; Issue#261, p.55]

An earnest attempt has been made to create a new identity for a series here, but the question of how to best frame Mass Effect's narrative strengths is, once again, left open. [June 2017, p.90]
