I will not be criticising what every does: animations and open world stuff. From the couple of hours i have played, i think it goes within the Mass Effect saga line and that it could be a good game. Problem is we are playing a BETA right now. Well, obviously they didn't even try.

If you print Mass Effect on the cover, there needs to be Mass Effect in it. You know, focusing on story, characters and a consistent universe. Long story short, halfway through i lost interest (i finished it, but in the fastest way possible). The writing was horrible. There is no other way to put it.
They had the potential and the budget to do something really fantasy and they wasted it to do some useless open world stuff. 1 new civilization, who are clearly the good guys, one new civilization, who are clearly the bad guys, and a few robots, which serve as shooting target practice. There was no revelation, or surprise, no suspension, nothing that really pushed me forward. I never felt, like i needed to know how it all would end.
Mass Effect never was about great combat or about exploration. It was about getting to know a fascinating universe (There is a difference there). Most of all it was about great storytelling glued together by good feeling combat. The combat in the trilogy felt good and was fun, because it was always grounded in a good context. Combat never was there, just to be there. And no amount of jumping around in combat can make up for lack of good writing. After the fifth Kett transport ship turned up, it turned from playing into boring grinding. (And why the **** can the player now become a flying ball of energy)
The combat in andromeda is fun, but combat alone is no motivation for 50-100h of gaming.

Characters are mostly forgettable. Most of them tell and no one shows, another sign of bad writing. And the worst part is the main character. Every time he/she says anything else than the "professional" answer i want to facepalm. Its so embarrassing and anti-charming. He/she cant even remotely stand up against Shepard. Besides, there is no choice left. Regardless what type of tone you pick, its always the same meaning.

To conclude this: In my opinion this games problem is, that it has way too much „teens in space“ injected into it. Just like the new star trek remake movies. They are fun to watch, but they throw everything exciting about the universe out of the window. Its all just fighting and stupid characters. And as soon as the credits roll, you have already forgotten the movie again. That is Andromeda.

What do you as a player think is important for the survival in the Andromeda? There is the main story here but, just stop and think for a little bit. There are Arks missing? Don't you think it's important to find them? People on the Arks don't have enough resources to live so setting up outposts and terraforming planets is important. There are three to four main story lines in this game and none of the games out there every gave this much freedom to a player as to how to approach it all. This is by far the best game I've played this generation. The NPCs feel alive, they have their own lives and don't just exist when I want them to.

I can give it a 10 but that wouldn't be very objective, they pushed it out just a bit too fast, but don't disregard this game, it's the best game Bioware has made, you're meant to live in this world.

It is the closest a video game has come to being an interactive movie.

Animations are definitely bad and some of the dialogue writing is questionable. But the gameplay is very fun, easily the best in the series, although I dislike losing control of my squadmates' abilities and the lack of manual saves during "Priority Missions" is a puzzling design choice and needs to be rectified with a patch.

The ambient music is excellent but the OST itself is an uninspired, generic blend of John Williams-meets-Martin O'Donnell. This game badly needs Jack Wall back; his scores for ME1 and (especially) ME2 were jaw-dropping.

All-in-all, I really like the game. It has its moments, but it definitely has some serious flaws as well.

-1 Lack of alien species. A whole new galaxy and they could only come up with 2 new species! Seriously?! TWO!!!
-2 Horrible ending. The Mass effect team has an issue with ending I think. The end boss battle was awful. The ending overall was awful. After all that chasing around you don't even get to explore the stupid meridian. Story at the end doesn't make sense, feels forced.

Besides these major points, other minor complaints are: Crafting is weird. There is no sense of progression. You can research the rarest gun at the beginning. Only the level of the gun progresses with character level. It should have been a research progression tree. Companion interaction is not very deep. Nexus progression is also limited. Nexus expands after the first outpost and stops there. It doesn't expand anymore as you put down more outposts. There should be more visible impact on the nexus as the mission moves forward.
    Pros:
Great combat: Had real fun with combat. The architect fights were nice. Game should have more big boss fights.
Open worlds: The worlds are open and if you enjoy exploration, you will have fun. Some side quests are nice and delves deep into the history and culture of the Angara.

I found the initial problem for a lot of users is that the first dozen hours are slow as you set yourself up and learn the optimal controls/ tactics/ lore

But when you've invested time you get left with a beautifully slick product that is as much a work of art as it is a game. The combat - which previously seemed slow and boring - is AMAZING. Eventually, when you''re a high enough level you can create multiple combat profiles you can swap between depending on which enemies you face - affecting your abilities, powers, ideal weapon choice etc. The movement in this game - initially sluggish - when you master your sprint, jump jet and dash enables you to whip in and out of enemies and to go to scans/loot. Even the NOMAD presenting problems as you learns its capacity and buy its upgrades.

The beauty of this game is it is a RPG and you're in a new galaxy with no idea what's going on - sounds pretty similar to your current position as a gamer. This actually helped me engage in the game as i wanted to delve into the THOUGHT-PROVOKING storyline/ themes (spoiler - they are amazing and the ideas the story presents might very well soon be real-world issues: automated workforce/ AI?!. I found once i slowed down my gameplay - took time to explore the the various dialogue choices all around our starting position and even reading the codices! When you've got your research, development, leveling, scanning, combat, inventory, looting, dialogue and movement sorted the game is beautiful: it just takes time to get this(and your ship) set up.

I think the reason this game is getting poor reviews is due to a 'fast food' culture we see ourselves in: Max enjoyment in minimal time. But if you take time to appreciate the game and story and learn the mechanics you're left with the most incredible game I've ever played.

This game has so much complexity and depth - delivered so well that it's a massive disappointment seeing bad reviews for a AAA game. Opinion: i'm worried this might lead developers away from creating games with such complexity and depth until you are left with dumbed down console ports.

So trust me when i say i was all in to let some minor errors out of the way and enjoy my time in Andromeda. But enough is enough, horrible looking PC especially on the female side, absolutely horrifying looking NPC and animations, sub-par dialogue and game breaking bugs made me decide to put and end to this torture and stop playing this spawn of corporate greedy hell. It makes me feel like bioware just went out and fired the talented people that made the Mass Effect trilogy and replaced them with people that never designed a character in their lives along with the worst animators they could get, and on top of that they decided to rush the game so the already horrible content looks even worse. The Planets do look amazing, to absolutely stunning and immersive and they are one of the few reasons this game gets some points on my list, though on the other side the very few enemy types you get to fight is depressing. It doesn't take long to realize from one planet to another the enemies are pretty much the same with some color variations. The gameplay is actually fun and dynamic which gives some satisfaction, but then come the bugs to make you remember this game is no fun with enemies getting stuck on roof, ice, or anywhere were you can't kill them unless you reload a previous save...and that is just one of the many bugs the game has(enemies won't attack when you are clearly shooting them, getting stuck, falling in a hole and teleporting to a completely different part of the map, doors inside your ship not opening after entering that room...and a big etc). Your crew relationship feels kinda shallow, Liam is probably the best done but making him only decent, I couldn't relate to them like i did with Garrus or Tali for example and some of the writing in the game makes you think they hired a teenager to do it, and not a very talented one at that. The music improves and actually makes you feel you're playing Mass Effect, but when in each cutscene you see the horrible characters with the hideous creepy animations and the sub par writing... making that Mass Effect should shine in those regards it just ruins the experience, i could never immerse and enjoy the ride this game should be, do to this awfully done things. I just regret preordering and not asking for a refund upon the 72 hours after release, since i was hoping at some point it will improve... it doesn't... Expand

I have to say that I understand the negative reviews as the game has more than several bugs especially the desert map which is really bugged and force you to reload your saves for about 60% of the missions because an NPC will be underground or something else. But apart from that, this game is fabulous, I love it! The story could be better but the exploration and the fights are pretty good. If you try to finish a planet as much as possible and don't swap too often between planets (which is a real pain) then this is an excellent game is maybe not the best PC Game of 2017 but would definitely be in the top 10. But this game was better than what i expected by much , in fact it was the first game since fallout new vegas that got me playing non stop every minute that i had free.

    The good:
_Mass effect 2 dialog system but better
_Mass effect 1 exploration system but much better
_Your squad members are very interesting and have great quests not just a "do this and im loyal" but actually quest that unlock other quests.
_An incredible ammount of interesting side quest that you really dont have to do but are there to do if you want , this is epic because its like a fallout game , you have epic quest that could never do if you did not care.
_The combat system is great , basically you have mass effect 1 exploration with mass effect 3 combat.
    _The main story is great.
_You actually have many character reactions to everything that happens in the story.
_The feeling of being alone in a dangerous galaxy is there.

    The bad:
_The animations are not as good as in mass effect 2 or 3 but considering that this game is longer than mass effect 2 and 3 combined and it has a masive number of side quest it is not really a problem ,mass effect 2 and 3 where more about cinematic effects about a story.
Andromeda is more about exploration like mass effect 1 so the animations are not as good but they are not terrible as the bad reviews say.
_There are some animation bugs but they are really minor and will be fixed.
_The fact that the game is based on exploration makes me think that ea will force bioware to sell a **** of DLC before they start working on a second game to finish the story.
_The vehicle for exploration should have weapons , its really not as much fun exploring if you need to stop to fight some idiots in the way , this was better in mass effect 1.

I actually enjoyed Dragon Age 2 because it could be funny and I had a lot of fun playing it, sure the game wasn't aesthetic or pleasing but I liked the story...I even liked DAI after I really sunk time into it (but making the enemy in the game come from a DLC from their most hated DA game was a joke, they pulled it together somehow...), but ME:A is just so painful to play, the story, the voice acting, the humor, the dialog choices mean nothing. I find myself skipping through the dialog. I have never done that in any of the previous games! I find that horrible! It's an RPG, I purchased based upon a story-a story I want to be in control of...only I'm really not. That's more frustrating than Garrus always calibrating. Combat is fun but wonky...I keep dying in the strangest places due to glitches. I get lost constantly, can't figure out where I'm going.. Planet scanning is pretty but so time consuming. I don't like any character or NPC I have come across. None. I can't even stand my own character. The menus are confusing, character creation is horrible. I think the best way to make a character is make it look absolutely ridiculous so you might laugh at something in the game! It's just horrible. I could overlook the dead faces and eyes, but the story and voice acting is an atrocity. Expand

The game does suffer from some mild graphical glitches but I have faith these will get ironed out sooner or later.

The multiplayer is actually quite well done but the interface for it takes some getting used to - it is a new metaphor and so people will be unfamiliar.

The Scanning aspect is quite interesting. I think people complain too much about this but I rather enjoyed it. it adds another layer of detail to the world that you have the option to explore. Most of the time the game tells you when you should be scanning but you can also do it just to find more details about technologies and histories of the items around you.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and don't agree with the negative reviews, but I respect that this experience is very different than previous Mass Effect games and so maybe it is something people will appreciate more in time.

I think it gets a lot of hate for being a mass effect game. People say the trilogy had really good characters. Those characters were developed over 3 games and were kinda boring in ME1. I have been trying to look at it more like a stand alone game. The story was compelling and was good at what it intended. It wasn't trying to be the trilogy, it was going for a different feel and I think it succeeded. As for the technicial issues there are more than I like but I think people forget Skyrim, and Fallout 4 for example. Those games had horrible (if somewhat funny at times) and often quest-breaking or game--breaking glitches and somehow those are OK (or at least accepted) and this isn't. Glitches can be fixed, and nothing I experienced was game-breaking and very few required a reload or reboot. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't say enough to bring this game out of the sheer hole that it had dropped into. Think of yourself. You're on the precipice of a massive high point in an IP's lifespan and then you just jump. Folks weren't really happy with the ending of ME: 3 and the descent just continued from there. While this is Bioware Montreal's first endeavor, it was a flop. The animation is so poor that the first ME game looks better. The movements are jittery, the voice acting is lack-luster, and the only good feel you get out of this game is the combat and even that is lacking in many areas. Overall, while there is a long story line, it feels too basic, too blase.

You go to this new exciting place ready to explore. What happens? Oh look a galactic threat. This isn't the "adventure" that was promised. This isn't the new and exciting narrative that should of been. This is just another cookie cutter RPG splattered with a recognizable label and filled with SJW non-sense to try and keep it "current".

Yes the game has some high points. The environments look great, the lighting is pretty well done, and over-all the alien races remain true to their appearances.

But I just can't get over some of the horrible design decisions. The romance options continue to be abyssmal for same sex audiences, and the new alien races introduced look like feet and feet with barnacles. The model designers for your character obviously had "diversity" in mind, but its just so difficult to make anything that somewhat looks like a human being capable of showing emotion. The basic Sara Ryder model looks like she has high spectrum autism. The male Ryder looks like some noir M'lady or some hipster you'd find in a coffee shop in east LA.

Overall the design decisions were horrible. I can't possibly continue to berate how destroying this is for this franchise and honestly, I think Bioware and EA need to seriously consider their designers and team for well known IP's or they will continue to see a decline in their audience outside of the COD and sports crowd.

For the fans of the series, there’s a lot here to love as much as there is to be desired…
    And I don’t mean just the aliens…
There are tons of missions to do here outside of the campaign, including loyalty missions like everyone loves from mass effect 2…
But there is a noticeable lack of emphasis on your crew this time around…
Because the story is about making a planet inhabitable for life forms to call home
    Wasn’t really interesting though…
So lack of interesting story, boring crew members... I understand why fans of the series don’t like this game... what about the rest
Lets get the elephant out of the room right now
You cant romance natalie dormers character
I should honestly stop the review right here and give it a 0/10 for playing with my heart like that…
But they did throw some real nudity and booty in here.. So slightly forgivable... but... Natalie Dormer guys...
How could you do this to me?
But the worlds in mass effect Andromeda are beautiful and the campaign which takes about 12 hours one its own is actually fun to run through…
The direction system does a great job of telling you where to go, though the command to show the point on the map frustratingly doesn’t always work…
Not sure on the rules behind when it will and when it won’t…
But the fact that clicking down doesn’t always show you where you’re going to is annoying…
And many missions here are set in an open world that you can explore with the nomad, that drives perfectly…
You also have a jump pack for hopping gaps and doing sick in air kills with your weapons that are equippable with mod slots…
And you can upgrade these weapons as well as unlock special moves for you and your crew with the skill points you get for leveling up…
My only issue with the campaign is the annoying scanning…
You’re asked to scan items way too frequently, stopping the flow and excitement of missions…
And the final stretch of the game feels recycled… and therefore feels like a grind…
I was happy with the games ending..
But the boring final stretch to get there almost seemed unworthy it, especially with a forgettable throwaway feeling boss fight…
I understand why mass effect fans don’t like this game... its very action third person cover based shooter heavy... very few dialog options that matter to make this feel like an rpg…
But if you look at this as just a game without the name mass effect attached, Andromeda is a solid experience…
People have noted animation problems.. but I didn’t notice any in my play through, and besides a few awkward transitions, my play through was fairly clean of bugs
And when you’re done with single player you can hop right into multiplayer where you’ll spend 15 seconds and realize you’re not going to waste your time on this garbage just like ea should have
This mode is a lazy and boring co-op objective based wave mission mode.
Every game developer in the world play uncharted lost planet 2 and lost planet 3 multiplayer
IF you don’t plan on making anything like them in your 3rd person shooter
save your time and money and don’t bother.
Despite the disappointing multiplayer, and disappointing RPG bioware DNA elements…
Mass Effect Andromeda is a solid experience that as a 3rd person shooter action adventure fan you shouldn’t pass up
    I give Mass Effect Andromeda
    an 8/10

    Lore is extensive and helpful
Characters are well made and relatable in many cases.
Different worlds to explore make you feel like you are in an alien planet.
    Story is inspiring.
Kind of miss the paragon/renegade system but the intent based dialogue is not bad either.
    Looks gorgeous.
    In depth crafting.
    Good multiplayer.
Amazing Ending got me sneaking out a tear.

There are several things that are not good, the devs shouldn't have changed the engine they were used to using, and animation in some things need a serious look over.

Its a game that had me entranced and dedicated, i can recommend it in good faith, and as long as you ignore the fact that Commander Shepard is only talked about, and its not a story with the characters you already know, you'll enjoy it a lot

I guess everything that needs to be said about animations has already been said. It's just sad.
Faces are just plain ugly and human characters look like puppets from the Thunderbirds with their oversized heads.

Side quests are repetative and get boring quite fast.

On the positive side, planets look reasonably good and some even great. Exploring is fun.

    Pros:
    - graphics in planets
    - mako + exploring
    - combat
    - multiplayer

    Cons:
    - characters visually
    - animation
    - dialogue & voice acting
    - side quests

I don't know what has happened to BioWare, but this game feels like the death of Mass Effect franchise.

Game is very big, and with big i mean BIG, lots of things to do, not ony missions like go here and look around for something, but very good developed missions like a gathering your crew to see a movie that tastes like a mini citadel dlc. Playing the whole game i'm certain people only played like 2 or 3 hours and decide they can do a review, i have 48 hours in the game and still is only 73% completed, if you have patience and let the game advance i'm sure it won't let you down. For me this game is an 8.5 - 9, hell i even enjoyed more andromeda than ME1, also, when people compare this game they always seem to forget that this is a new journey, you can't compare this to ME3, you have to do with ME1, you have to let the game develop itself through the hours, if you wait, i'm sure you will enjoy it as much as i do.

I feel very bad for people who give this game a 0, because no game deserves that note (Except No Man's Sky). Please, be realistic with your reviews, some people who might enjoy the game won't buy it believing all the hate you just wrote is truth, and it isn't.

If you liked the Mass Effect OT, i'm sure you will like the game except you are already brainwashed and believe all the crap that people is writing about it, in that case i won't struggle for yo to buy it, otherwise, you should buy it and enjoy it. Cheers

Yes, I think it's a good game all in all.
I try to be spoiler free (So hard though)
THE BAD: Face animation: Just bad. So, so bad. (In contrast, lip syncing is almost perfect). Face Design: They tried for a more realistic approach (Meaning: Less Hollywood, more average) Which is kind of ok, but it leads to my next point. Dating: If you’re male and heterosexual , you probably won't

Dating: If you’re male and heterosexual , you probably won't get an interesting person to date in this one. (Your choices are hyper teenage girl with bonding issues, Lady by the book and “My Sister is more important than my own character”) It's pretty much EXACTLY like Dragon Age Inquisition. It seems Bioware really doesn't know how to make women interesting lately. (Thesis: To many gay writers? ) And as they’re not really pretty either, the human aspect of reproduction kicks in: You friendzone them all.
Bugs: Soooo many glitches. Mostly funny, rarely game breaking. But there are some annoying ones. Maybe wait on some patches?

    THE GOOD:
Characters: The characters do actually grow on you (Friends, yay!)
Story: The story and decisions can be really hard. Some are a little forced but they made me stop and think about it. It seems they focused on long term problems that you create in the next ME title. (Implied) The "ending" is really cool (I guess they really really wanted to avoid ME 3 terror) and it sets some cool mysterious things up for later games in this franchise. (No Cliff-hanger, just teasing) The bad guy is well written and acted. He’s a great motivation later in the game. And the scary face animations actually work in his favour!
Sound: The voice acting is mind blowingly good. It dips only rarely on side characters but the sheer volume needs to be mentioned and appreciated. Male Rider is really funny if you always take the funny answers. Holy **** there were some good ones in there. Some Music gets you really pumped for the action.
Exploration: There's some really cool **** to explore and to look at. I stopped several times, look at something and was all “Woah”. And then dead. Because someone shot me.

At the end, my score is mainly influenced by "how it felt" to finish the game and it left me satisfied.
It’s kind of the opposite of ME3 where the game itself had a lot satisfying moments and then the ending almost ruined it.
There's a lot of game here, not all good, but still worth your time and money.
As a last tip: Activate subtitles and just read those instead of looking at the characters.

I have completed 98% of the game and it took me over 77 hours ( I did a lot of very optional side content). Some of the side quests lead to some uprising gems like the birth of the first child in the new galaxy. On a desert world defeating the water mafia makes sense to make the planet more viable.

The main story is solid, the character stories are strong and in some cases really touching, and the lore is fantastic. This game lays an amazing foundation for future games very much like ME1 did originally. The fighting mechanic is the best in the series. I know some people want to control their companions in combat and I respect them, I like this approach but like I said I respect their opinion.
I like the crafting, love the Nomad especially on one of the later game worlds with low gravity. I love reading the lore as I discover it and engaging in conversations with everyone.

This game like the original ME1 has glitches and some mechanics that aren't great, but if games don't try new things they don't evolve and that's no fun. This game has the same issues each of the ME games have had at the begining. What I like about Bioware is they will make the effort over a long period of time to keep improving it. But they have created the foundation with ME:A for a great new saga. If you have a man crush on Shepard you can't get over this may not be the game for you. Thats a different story, with a different tone, in a different time with very different objectives.

So I have been confused how off the bat there was so many 0 - 3 with such negative comments. Until I started clicking around a bit and realized these were account created specifically to bash this game. This tactic has been used before. No surprise there is a very loud, very angry group who hate Bioware or have a vendetta against this game who are making a very concerted effort. The positive comments are rolling in and the major reviews have made the key point that is a great game with some challenges and glitches to be fixed. That is accurate. This game is a solid and worth an open minded play through.

There will be no personal attacks towards the employees of BioWare here because I know they are a very hard working company. I am not sure wtf happened here tho... First of all Andromeda looks like it had a significant downgrade in the graphical department. Also animations are clearly not up to par with today's standards.. this is rather confusing as this is a huge team of developers with the resources, money and the staff to make this game the AAA title it should have been. There are countless bugs and glitches, poorly written dialogue, frame rate drops, texture problems, lighting problems, shadow problems, even just simply running around looks terrible. Animations: WTF is with the ugly character models? this isn't 2007 anymore... heck The first Mass Effect game actually looks better than this!! This is completely unacceptable at full retail price! here in Canada where the game was made this costs ove $80.. and even $120!!! To put the nail in the coffin the multiplayer is just Horde mode... endless waves of horde mode. Incredibly boring. Oh there is also microtransactions for horde mode.... can you believe it ? I bet you can't.. but stupid people will still buy into it. Gotta get that 10 dollar gun! Anyways I am now just ranting. Hows the story of this game? well its completely forgettable, You really don't care for these characters at all. The sex scenes are extremely awkward and will probably make you burst out laughing. This just doesn't feel like a BioWare game. Lets not forget that in the dialogue options.. It does let you choose but they never say what you want them to say... Its like its on PG mode all the time. Gotta be nice I guess. All in all I'm deeply disappointed in this and I know BioWare tried there damn best to give us a great game, Unfortunately it feels more like they are trying to copy what the first 3 games did ... but the execution of it is sub par. The combat however is tight and fluid when it does not glitch out. There is allot of content in this game, but most of it is rather tedious and boring. It hurts my Mass heart to give this a dislike but it is what it is. In loving memory of Sheppard. This is below Average. 4/10 Expand

The game feels hollow and lacks those magic moments that can be found all across the original trilogy. The lack of interesting companions is a big issue, which adds to the mediocre writing and subpar facial animations. Immersion takes obviously a toll here. I do believe that they spent way too much time discussing SJW nonsense instead of actually developing the story, the characters and the narrative.

However, the game is not bad itself. Any indie studio would have earned 9s across the board with this game for sure. The problem is that its being compared to one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) trilogy of all time in the gaming world.

It does not deserve such number of bad ratings. If you liked the original you will def. have a good time with this one.

Overall an extremely unpolished, tedious, derivative offering littered with poor design decisions from a major developer who should know better. I cannot stress the word tedious enough when it comes to this game.

Character development and story progression (the core of the Mass Effect series) is at best average/acceptable for a developer of this size and with their wealth of experience. The dialogue is so cheesy and lame it is frankly embarrassing. The protagonist feels completely detached from everything going on, the team are not particularly engaging and there is no sense of investment and attachment in getting to know them. Although the game is large it does not feel as rich and well-crafted as other open world style RPG games that have come out over the last few years.

Graphics and animation quality are terrible with low res textures, janky movements and comically bad expressions. When compared with some recent 3rd person offerings such as Witcher 3 & The Division (and Battlefield which shares an engine with ME:A), the lack of quality is genuinely shocking.

The controls and movements feel sloppy and the user interface is an exceedingly unintuitive, overly complex mess which is irritating to navigate. The ability to control and customize squad mate combat has been removed making combat and involvement with the crew even less engaging.

Unavoidable in game cinematics when transitioning between the ship, planets and galaxy map are painfully tedious and serve as the icing on the cake that is Mass Effect Andromeda.

There are a lot of good things about the game, many of which are personal preference of course, but I love many of the areas, I love the focus on making a system habitable and home; a focus that influences and impacts almost every single thing you do in the game. I enjoy the combat, more than other mass effect games, and after 70 hours play I think I might even consider re-playing it.

The flaws though are what make it simply a good game, instead of a great game. The main story feels a bit weak, the NPCs are of mixed quality, the dialog is hit/miss and graphical glitches are distracting. There are a lot of very good design decisions, also quite a lot of bad ones.

This isn't a game by Bioware's original studio and it shows. They've taken what Mass Effect was and tried to run with it. Inexperience and unfamiliarity shows, but also leads to some of the improvements I enjoyed.

Flawed yes, enjoyable yes, It lacks polish and refinement. EA needs to learn from CD Projekt RED that releasing a game before you've polished it as much as possible is not good for reviews and for gamers.

Action oriented combat allows for more varied active game play.

Best class customization options in the series with all active skill trees available from the start and the ability to change specializations on the fly.

Largest selection of weapons and armors options in the series with even more varied customization with augments and mods.

Environment art on planets is gorgeous and the draw distance is amazing.

    Automatic cover system actually works.

The game runs very well for me on 970 with a steady frame rate.

    Cons:
Terrible facial animations and some lip sync issues.

Confusing Menus. Crafting system while robust is a mess to navigate same with the quest log. Leaving skill tree and map take one step longer than they should, design was obviously form over function with consoles in mind.

Unless I am missing something you cannot hotkey consumables you have to tab weapon wheel to activate

Some Glitches, I had an enemy that I needed to kill for a quest fall through map forcing me to restart the area and had a minor side quest reappear after it was completed.

Traveling from planet to planet can be a bit tedious as there is an un-skippable animation that takes over 20 seconds each time you travel through space.

Control over squad mates has been drastically diminished as you can’t cue their abilities in combat or equip them with different weapons/armor.

(I haven’t finished the story so I am not ready to comment on it yet but I can say that generally I am intrigued with what is going on and like how my actions tend to have a lasting impact on the environments.)

Unfortunately, ME:A is unable to match the heights of its predecessors as the obvious negatives such as the animation quality really put a damper on Mass Effect’s traditionally strong immersive world building. That being said the game play here is still pretty solid with good dialogue options, meaningful choices, combat that has never felt so solid, and an actually fun to drive Rover. This game needed more polish and it’s a shame that EA felt the need to rush this out the door by the end of q1 as it could have really shined with a little more work. Even as things stand I have really enjoyed my time with Andromeda and plan to continue playing it to completion. I hope that they are able to build off this foundation in later entries because there is actually a really amazing game here with some refinement.

It didn't, it absolutely did not.

The good things: the combat is good fun, nothing new, but fun. The graphics on PC are great, IF you have a high end machine. But there are so many games that do the entire package better, both old and new.

    The disappointment
I really don't want to bash a dead horse, but the animation is so bad.. It seems to me that bioware just grabbed some homeless alcoholics from the street, gave 'em some drinks and asked them to do the animations. The lack of professionalism and quality control is simply unforgivable.

I personally find that Gameplay and Plot are more important parts of a game than animations - but it would seem a lot of people intensely disagree with that opinion.

    ___________________________________________________________________________
I'll be honest, there seems to be several issues in how this game is rated by its audience.

The first is a fairly common mistake (imo), which is that the game isn't rated on its own virtue, or rated against an industry standard. Instead it's measured against a trilogy that launched a decade ago, and that a lot of us grew up with. The second part, and judged from some of the things I've come across on different sites, seem to point out that people were set on hating the game and being disappointed by it, before it ever launched.I think it's a legacy of ME3's ending, which has tainted this launch.

Is it an inferior game compared to the original trilogy? Aspects of it are, for sure. But it gets a lot right too. Gone are the cramped pre-fab structures of the original trilogy, and the addition of the jump pack/biotic jump + evade adds a lot to the dynamics of the gameplay, and the pace as well.

I found the various locations more visually stimulating than either the original ME games, but also far better than the mess that was DAI. They weren't perfect, but they were at least on par with the original trilogy as far as I'm concerned.

Right, so the setting and the gameplay are at the very least wholly acceptable. So what about companions and plot/missions?

Companions will always be a subject of intense debate -as it should be. I suspect that half the player-base absolutely hates Peebee (justified or not) while the other half probably loves her. This is as it always will be, and isn't a lick different from any of the companions in the original trilogy. Some characters are pretty dull, some feel a bit forced, and others are pretty cool. In this case, I'd say they got more right than not, though I'd note that Bioware have far more issues with human characters than they do aliens (though perhaps disregarding Jack).

    Plot and missions? Right.
Most of the game will be spent on different planets doing sidequests. As with most games, some of these are good, and others bad (no Witcher 3 here I'm afraid). Primarily the issue isn't an abundance of boring sidequests, as much as it's the amount of times you have to fly back to the same planet because of a quest update. Too much time spent in flying animations to the same damn places.

The main plot is fairly decent though. The Kett are however a tad more generic than I'd wish for. Think the alien invaders in The Avengers, just with the ability to speak.. well, sorta.

So, we come to the last part, and the one that's been hyped unreasonably so. Or maybe not unreasonably so, but one that has a far larger impact on user scores than makes sense. The animations. First of all, I'm not going to address general bugs, as they judging from a ton of other games, don't really impact scores (basically any game made by Bethesda). There are however distinct issues with animations, character creation and recycling of character assets.

Animations range from fine to terrible. I ended up deleting my custom male character after the first conversation, because the facial animations were absolutely terrible. This was made better by using the pre-made male Ryder. The fact that the default male Ryder works decently, does not however, in any way forgive the terrible animations of custom characters but also other parts of the cast in the game. Facial animations aren't the only issues though, and movement and body language in conversations and cut-scenes also leave much to be desired. One would assume in this time and age, that a triple A studio could afford some decent mocap for both facial features and body (I don't recall it being as bad in DAI, though it was pretty damn wooden in the original ME trilogy).

And then there's the recycling of assets. No excuse here, that's just plain lazy and frankly disrespectful. It's not even that they're trying to hide it. There are multiple scenes were a crowd of characters all wearing the same damn face are in plain view. It's insulting.

The reason for my rating is fairly simple. If the animations and recycling of character assets were fixed, I'd give it an even "8" or hell maybe even an "8.5" if that was a thing. But the animations and recycling kills a bit of the immersion that seem to be Bioware's aim in most of it's game.

The game is full of bugs, on cutscenes, combat, gameplay, they can be encountered anywhere. Some bugs are easy to ignore, but some are unacceptable, for a 2017 mass game, its simply trash. Character Creation was a HUGE waste of opportunity, not much to do here, because ALL HUMAN FACES look mediocre, and ALL females faces are ugly as hell!

After that, you jump into the story, which is a critical disappointment, a NEW GALAXY that felt so empty. ''3'' new races, which the kett are the only interesting race with variety and mysterious presence in the galaxy, but the other 2 felt irrelevant, the angara felt like its near extinct by the kett and the remnant are some robots programmed to kill and guard stuff. The races felt very effortless. The andromeda galaxy doesnt stops there, what else does it has to offer? Empty planets with little to almost no life. The plot felt like a huge fiction in my opinion, a 10 man squad fighting a war and a galaxy at the same time, lol. And the writing was very weak- mediocre.

So the exploration is not bad, because everything is nice to see and all but the side quests ALL felt like annoying fetch quests, i never really cared about any of them, witcher 3 side quests are masterpieces compared to these. The combat is the only thing i loved in this game. I liked the guns and armors, but i wanted more. The shooting and cover system was good, but the only problem i had with combat was the squad AI on HEAVY gunfights. For unlogical reasons, they would stop firing for a few seconds to either move/jumpjet or simply meditate in the middle of the fight, i noticed this because since i was playing on hard, i was starting to notice that my 2 squadmates where at times useless. At some points, they felt like decoys but their abilities where decent like the omni grenades which are a must on heavy gunfights with lots of enemies. The enemy ai was a pretty good experience, i always felt like they where trying to kill me, because they always try to flank the sh#t out of you. Overall the combat was pretty memorable.

In conclusion, the combat succeeded its predecessors, but the story, the ''new'' galaxy, animations, the character creation and female faces are an insult to MASS EFFECT and its entire fanbase including me. I bought and played this game after watching countless negative reviews, thinking that it was all just a simple ''hate train''. No, is more than that, it is by far the biggest disappointment ive seen in gaming to date. Buggy, ugly and bad. Watch out CD Projekt Red, u dont want to be bought by EA, lol.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok this is kind of painful to write, I got the deluxe version because well, mass effect is... sorry WAS my favorite game series...
Firstly. Deluxe version, waste of money... heck I'm not sure if the standard is worth it to be honest, WAY too many glitches, the map and navigation is horrible, I rarely know where I'm going because they basically show a 3d map in 2d, and you cant rotate it, so you're constantly wondering if your supposed to go up or down, and pointer is rarely useful. the characters are NOWHERE near as interesting as ME1 let alone ME2, heck, Id argue and say its worse than 3's new characters. WHICH IS SAYING SOMETHING! animation quality is abysmal in comparrison to 3, no-one feels real... wait thats not exactly true, the majority of male characters do feel real-ish, oh and there were missions where I'd be fighting and suddenly find myself falling under the ground into an abyss, or Id get stuck between crates or even a person and be forced to re-start from last load point. the camera changes so much during combat, I can't even keep track of who I'm fighting, and not to mention to EXTRA long reload time on EVERY GUN! I MEAN SERIOUSLY! I end up going melee just to make it easier to battle, and SO many characters have One hit KOs, so you can't let them get close, imagine fighting banshees, but more annoying, and you can't really shoot them, or even get away. I've had moments when Ryder wouldn't move, take becomes unselectable for some reason, or something, and the puzzles, as much as I enjoy puzzles, they get very boring and old, VERY fast...

I still liked the game, and story, and stuff, BUT I AM HONESTLY SO MAD ABOUT ALL THE BUGS AND GLITCHES, I SWEAR IF THIS HAS A ME3 END, I WILL BREAK MY LAPTOP

P.S, I'm tagging spoiler box, just in case, I don't think I spoiled anything but, can never be too safe

I like this one overall. It's not up to the same standard as the first two mass effect games, but I'd put it on par with ME3 in most respects. The big failures are the ones you've seen made infamous online - facial expressions are often strange and inhuman at best. I've likened it to watching animatronic characters speaking. Things move and you get what the expression is supposed to be,I like this one overall. The big failures are the ones you've seen made infamous online - facial expressions are often strange and inhuman at best. I've likened it to watching animatronic characters speaking. Things move and you get what the expression is supposed to be, but it rarely looks natural or appealing. Similar animation problems exist with character movement, and there are occasional graphical glitches that are annoying. The other thing I've found most annoying so far is the repetitive nature of the fights. The enemies have so far been largely the same, and I find myself using the same tactics over and over again without feeling like there's much point to the fighting.

That said, I found the concept behind this game to be pretty compelling. It's executed with moderate success. The mystery of the scourge is fascinating enough to keep me going, and once the game opens up to let you explore the massive areas, it can feel really satisfying. As ugly as the characters can be, I've found many of the landscapes to be simply beautiful. I like the new ships. I like about as many companion/NPC characters as I liked in ME3 (about half of them).

I haven't even attempted the multiplayer at this point, so I'm not considering that for my score.

Bottom line is that this isn't the masterpiece that was ME2, and it lacks the sense of urgency (and the benefit of buildup) that supported ME3 so well. The game has some big flaws. That said, it's still worth playing if you enjoy science fiction and ideas of space exploration. I also think the majority of people giving this a "0" or "1" aren't giving the game a fair shake.

I can overlook sloppy writing when it's your first experience making a game, but I can't understand it from the studio that made Baldurs Gate or Dragon Age origins.

So ya, animations are a bit wonky? but to be honest... the previous ME games had this issue as well, rest of the game play is also spot on, lots of side quest long and driven main quest Basically has all the game play and story you would expect from a ME game, played for 2 days and still haven't scratched the surface! when did you last buy a single player game

It really is hard to make an acceptable custom character better than or equal to the default one. Their hair color and options are pretty sad as well. Perhaps they really need to go in a different direction with their art design. Another game that uses the same engine is Battle Field 1 and while the game play has a good look and feel the characters seem to look a lot better even though they lack a lot of facial expressions. Some of the writing early on is a bit shaky, and the face animations during dialogue can be off, but the rest looks amazing. Overall, the gameplay is a ton of fun and the story and setting have me engaged enough that I'm still craving the game. The anti ME:A storm is largely bandwagoning, don't let it stop you from enjoying a great game.

I know, this game is supposed to focus on the Andromeda galaxy, but the first three ME's were so great to me because of its depth. I got so much more out of the back story of ME than I ever have from Star Wars. One thing I'll never forget was riding an elevator in the Citadel and hearing an Elcor reciting Hamlet. You lose out on so much by only having eight races out of the vast array of incredibly designed and written life forms of the Milky Way. Instead of making up for the loss of Quarians, Volus, Batarians, Elcor, etc, Andromeda introduces three new races, and proceedes to shroud them in mystery for large portions of the game. There was such development in the original trilogy: the Krogan/Rachni war, Salarian Genophage, Prothean tech/backstory, Quarian/Geth, Batarian/Vorcha raiders, etc. All of that which gave the series depth, now makes Andromeda seem like Mass Effect lite. I have played the game now for hours and hours, but have yet to experience the same wonder and amazement that I was still feeling during ME3 while mediating an argument between Krogan and Salarian allies about whether to cure the genophage. You had Cerberus, whom one might assume could have infiltrated the Andromeda initiative, but up to this point has been non existent. All of these elements that I've mentioned from the original games made mass effect the game that it was. The gameplay mechanics changed, but fans kept coming back for its engrossing story and lore. The codex was unnecessary in the old games, now it's the equivalent of Destiny's grimoires. When I began Andromeda, I shook off bad reviews. They were mostly based on bad animations and design, but I said, "Whatever, a watered down fighting game like For Honor gets all these great reviews but people are throwing Andromeda out based on 10 hours of gameplay" (closer to three hours of campaign play). I couldn't go on such reviews, feeling like people were just looking for things to complain about after becoming bitter from ME3's ending. But now, after putting over a week into the game, I realize it's fatal flaw is in the one factor that could have been its saving grace: the story. Still, the game is still fun and worth the $60 price tag, especially compared to most other games coming out now. It has elements of Mass Effect that I love, and I am in the camp that is glad they didn't change multiplayer much from ME3. Give this game a shot now if you like multiplayer in ME3 or wait until the price drops a lot for the campaign. Expand

I tried to detach from the orignal trilogy before jumping in and so far, I'm enjoying the game a lot. Maybe so patches came since the launch but I don't get so far why people are pissed off by the animations, nor by the story. I love the combat, the characters, the A.I., the ship. Everything is there to get me hooked and to make me want to go on and discover the new worlds lying out there.

So far, the PC version I'm playing is greatly optimized and I'm running it without hiccups with a gtx 960 and i7 4770. Sure I'm not playing at highest settings but I never cared about it. It's better looking than console counterparts anyway. If you have a gtx 1060 or more, you're in for the full show, the way Bioware wants you to experience their game.

If you like sci-fi, if you loved Mass Effect and if you're a tad open minded, go ahead and buy this gem. Sure it's a little rough around the edges and there are some distracting bugs but nothing to stop you from enjoying a great sci-fi rpg with a good cast and some sweet ideas. And please... don't listen to the haters out there. Yes, I believe that a new franchise without the Mass Effect label would have helped the game getting more praise, but in the end, the Mass Effect universe merit that you dwelve into it once more and even if some parts are clumsy or not fitting the universe 100%, they really tried to get the serie in another direction and in my book, their work mean a lot and merit to be appreciated, played and enjoyed.

Let's get the cons out of the way first.

The game is slow to hook you. But once you get used to that, there's a great story here, with genuinely laugh-out-loud funny writing in some places,

The problems with this game can be fixed with a patch or two, and once you get used to the uncanny valley faces and animation issues (took me about 3-4 hours), there's a solid core with a good storyline and great characters.

On the surface it seems to offer you a lot but it is a shallow unrewarding experience. You can see there was a lot of work put into the game but without the a good core story and well written characters, it fails to pull me into it or let alone even care about it. The writing is so painful, I avoid conversations with my main crew members. I feel no connection to them unlike the previous titles, which I would make every effort to get everyone on board. With the story, if feels so off the cuff, matter of fact, when you just met a new offworld species. It is not convincing and throws you off. Are there any bad choices? I feel like there is no real importance to any decisions you make. Your just "following the trigger script" to progress the game. The question is, should a person invest 100+ hours playing something, just because or should I continue playing, just to finish it. There are extremes reviews of flat out bashing or outright praising. I think the review sites are fair at saying this is a 6/10. You can see there was allot of work put into it but it is way, WAY over-reaching, as far as what really matters to make this a fun game to play or even care about. Expand

From all Bioware Games this is the worst I hardly qualifies as an RPG. It copies the bad aspects from other franchises like the terrible (clickfest) UI, cheesy/simple combat mechanics, terrible writing/dialogues and zero-consequences kind of story and totally forgets about the strengths of former Bioware Titles. (Great Story, well written Characters, meaningful choices, consequences, tactical combat, challenging (Non-Random!) encounters.

You could take any ubisoft openworld title, put mass effect textures on it and it would probably even play better.

The graphics is not even as big an issue as most people claim, Bioware never played big in that area - but they always looked okayish. But abandoning the mass effect franchise in this cheap copy cat / milking cow attempt is very low, even for EA standards. I suppose EA has just again qualfied as worst company on the planet - again.

This game is not something one would expect from the pioneers and innovators of the cinematic storytelling genre who used to set the bar. It fails to live up to Bioware's previous releases, let alone surpass them.

-Story is weak and generic, with badly spaced, disjointed narrative. Big chunks of the Mass effect lore has been conveniently swept under the rug, and retcons are everywhere.

-Protagonist portrayal: they tried to borrow the 'personality' concept from Dragon Age 2 where your character could be diplomatic, aggressive or sarcastic. Only this time around the character can be 'casual', 'professional', 'logical' or 'emotional'. Big problem with that? They all amount to same thing, with a very slight variation. Your character won't tell anyone to 'shove off', even if the situation truly warrants it. He/She will put up with anyone's **** politely, no matter the personality path you choosing. There is no confrontational options, neither with npc, quest givers, nor with your companions.

-Characters (usually the studio's strength) are bland and uninspired. That they unload their whole story upfront, instead of developing over time just highlights the problem. You don't get to learn anything nuanced about their character, there simply isn't anything they won't tell you the first couple times you talk to them.

-Combat is horrible. They went from real time with pause and full squad control to controlling your own character only with super minimal ability load out (3 abilities at a time with convoluted profile switching is a crime). Your squad are just bots who tag along and do their own thing. You can't even make them switch a weapon.

-Exploration: the vistas are the only positive thing about this game. The quest that tied to the exploration however can be summed up by scan, scan, scan some more and fetch ad naseum. Oh, and repeat exactly same thing on the next planet. If you thought Dragon Age inquisition had it bad with filler quests, prepare for something even worse.

-Music score: minimalistic where present, absent in most of the scenes. A big let down compared to epic scores of their previous games.

-Graphics: planetary visuals are the only good thing about it. Character detailing suffered a MAJOR step back from ME2 and ME3. There is one SINGLE asari head that's shared across the whole asari population, same with Salarians. Turians look like someone forgot to give them facial texture, nevermind the colony markings. I guess the Krogan look the least offensive out of the bunch, and that's not saying much. They looked better in ME2 and 3, just as did all other alien species. Humans took a beating too, btw. It's not just the aliens.

Game Issues: Inability to save during priority missions. Horrendous animations. Gamebreaking bugs. Recycled alien life, bosses and puzzles from planet to planet. Characters referencing events that have not happened yet, often spoiling the story. Banter glitches where the whole party is silent for the duration of 2 planets and then exploding with banter only to go mute again the next planet around.

I cannot recommend this game to anyone. This is the first bioware game I will not finish.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me caveat this by saying that I have a pretty average rig, but experienced no technical problems with the game about 30 hours in. I take it from some of the reviews that this hasn't always been the case. The short version is, I am loving it, despite its flaws.

Going through, I will highlight a few things and make particular note of the flaws. Please be aware that I am doing that.

Story - I liked that they flipped the typical save-the-galaxy script in Andromeda. Entering a new galaxy, trying to get civilization kicked off again, and dealing with new found problems are all a welcome and interesting background. There was no homeworld-like sense of loneliness, or awkward tension prior to meeting other races. It feels like you arrive and jump right into the fray.

Pacing - Part of the problem with jumping right into the fray was meeting a bunch of characters too fast - I felt much more attached to the characters I added later that were more directly involved with the story than any of the ones I started with. The rest of the story can take awhile if you're going through everything and thats fine by me, although as usual travel time is annoying. Weapons and armor actually feel different and are paced well, but they are so numerous and complicated that they have their own issues.

Questionable Design Choices - a lot of the menu/quick access issues that Dragon Age: Inquisition had were only somewhat fixed here. The game is massive both in terms of the world it gives you and the types of things you have to do in it but you can only access things from certain places. For instance, there is no reason I shouldn't be able to send a strike team on a mission from anywhere on a planet. Why do I have to leave on the Ship or be at the Nexus to do this? Ditto research and development, colony communication, SAMs location and conversations limits, etc.

Size and Scope - the game can feel very overwhelming sometimes. This is one of the reason a lot of the weapon augments almost feel like too much. Or perhaps its the billion quests that you receive from different locations throughout the game. I like the scope, but it can be hard to get a handle on if you're trying to do everything.

The rest - Graphics are nothing earth shattering, which means I can comfortably run it on my aging computer. The combat system is freaking excellent, and the multiplayer strike teams that help your single player campaign seem like a cool idea (still haven't done them yet). There are great characters in the game, but it takes awhile to find them.

Ultimately: I've spent almost 30 straight hours playing this over the weekend, and I really enjoyed myself. The game pulls you in, like the ones before it. The design decisions that haunted Dragon Age: Inquisition, for me, are still present - slightly bettered but not done away with. The size and scope can feel overwhelming and the script is off and on. It helps that I had no technical issues with the game as of yet, but there is the foundation for something great here, and the game is a heck of a good time.

This is awful. Most notably, the face animations are beyond bad. It's like going back in time back to early 2000's when motion capture wasn't a thing in video games. Even graphically, the game doesn't look next-gen. The story isn't enjoyable, it's actually pretty boring and not interesting to play or watch. Perhaps this game will get the No Man's Sky award of 2017. 3/10.

Andromeda copies the gameplay of Dragon Age Inquisition with more streamlines main missions and well your spaceship. I loved Inquisition and i love the exploration, discoveries and the overall gameworld of Andromeda. i always wanted to just explore the Mass Effect Universe, see some settlements, cities and just get immersed in that game world.
In my opinion Andromeda really delivers that.

    Positive:

In terms of graphics, sounds, animations and gameplay I am very happy and satisfied.
I don't really understand critics saying, the quests are too MMO. Yes it's not a unique gameplay, but it works and interestingly enough games with pretty much the same gameplay are upvoted.

Combat is really fun and with different combos you can customize your battle strategies.
Driving the Nomad is awesome and compared to the Mako they figured out driving mechanics.

    Negatives:

Character Editor is again really bad and the custom Ryders are the best looking.
I'd love to have more squadmates, more customization options for said squadmates and more interaction with them.

Ok, after all that is going on with this game I feel like I have to add my review. I can understand the anger from some people as this was a very expected title and the quality standards have not been met.

The first launch of the game rendered a black screen, which after some research discovered it was a bug that could be fixed by going into windows mode. Ok, not a good start but fair enough.

First animations... Yes, they are not polished. ME1-3 had far less facial expressions (barely non-existant) but while in MEA they are technically better (faces actually can move in the same way a real face would do), they fail to mimic real expressions with awkward movements and, most of times, wrong ones. This, however, didn't break the experience for me as I play with helmets on most of the time :D

Story... ok, average. It's not bad, it keeps you engaged, but fails to impress. If it was a book or movie it'd be a boring one. It has the components (mystery, tension, drama) but follows too many cliches from other games and characters seem to be a bit less intense/important than previous ME.

Conversations seem to be a bit weak. I remember in ME that I loved the options to speak and would laugh at the outcome. Here most times I struggle to find an option I don't dislike. And some times you pick just one and it has undesired unexpected consequences. It's like the conversation paths were created by different people and then merged together.

Gameplay is nice, it feels like others ME. It has some annoying things like maps, bad management (IMHO) of inventory, and the damn boring scanning which feels like that component you add to a game so that people it takes players longer to finish the game but doesn't actually add anything to it.

When it comes to the exploration it seems they went back to the scheme of ME:1, with the player having to spend plenty of time on land with the Nomad trying to find places. Not my cup of tea but might work for some.

Same goes for crafting, it feels like it's another thing I have to spend plenty of time with in order to enjoy the game. Some people might like this, but to me, having to spend time in front of a menu so that I can have a new weapon is boring.

The game definitely feels weaker than previous series in terms of polishment and general value / quality, but if you enjoyed the previous ME and you are not in hate mode you will definitely enjoy this one but if you have high expectations there is a chance it might disappoint you.

Overall it feels like they did rush the game and didn't actually test it on real (not part of the development team) testers to get feedback before release.

ME2 is the best game I've ever played, so I can relate to people who feel that ME A is a completely different and a letdown. However, if you approach this game with an open mind, you could very well end up liking it a lot. Some feel that it's too grindy with its research and crafting, and to some extent I agree, but it becomes much less of a chore if you stop focusing on the finishing line and instead try and enjoy every moment and embrace the content. Read logs, learn about the world and it's inhabitants - get immersed. Experiment with different builds and abilities and find what suits you. It is very similar to Mass Effect 1 in both its positives and negatives (Which is actually my favorite of the series despite the bad combat, inventory handling, and the awful planet exploration - the story made up for all of it). Yes it does have fetch quests and lots of random meaningless side quests... but so did every other mass effect and Knights of the old republic. And you know what? If you like doing those kinds of things they are fun - but you don't have to do them. It also feels the most like playing a Star Trek game than anything I have played in recent years.

So let me put it straight - I never counted ME as an RPG game. It's a TPS like Zero Dawn, Far Cry and so on. So i'll judge it as such. It's a TPS like Zero Dawn, Far Cry and so on. So i'll judge it as such. For example i don't give a **** about dialog wheel and no alignment (or how you prefer to call this paragon/renegade system from past MEs). And anyway it's better than what i saw in Fallout 4 (worst one ever). And I don’t see ME as a great game also. It was good, no questions here, but first game had its share of tech issues (on a level of Andromeda or near it), second one was a very weak game overall and plot of the third one was like one big “f*ck you guys”.
So let's start. If you ask me to describe Andromeda in a few words i'll say "Improved Dragon Age: Inquisition". So first of all this game is not for all. It’s all about exploration, one main goal (like closing all rifts in DA:I) and little side quests here and there. And in-game characters can’t stop saying you that. So if you don’t fill like “oh I wonder what’s going on in this cave” in games like Skyrim, Horizon or Zelda this game isn’t your cup of tea and that’s ok. As for that “Improved” part. Side quests in DA:I was bad, “bring me 10 rat tails” bad. In Andromeda thing are better. No, quests like find 16 minerals still there (like cups, metal flowers and so on in Horizon) but it’s all up to you if you want to do so. I see this in every open world game lately so I guess there are people who like collection quests like that. Anyway most quests are solid side quests now. A lot of people complain that it’s MMO-like. Nope. It’s “open world game”-like. Sorry but if you expected Andromeda to be something else it’s not this game fault.
Graphics strangely enough is good and awful at the same time. How is that possible? Well you probably saw a lot of gifs about character animation. Sadly that’s all true. Characters in this game look like **** Not only animation is weird (it’s less obvious while you playing rather than watching but still), but skin textures, some glitches. Overall characters don’t look like humans/aliens and more like plastic dolls. On the other hand maps are looking good. First planet with all that lightning strikes, flying rocks and mantas was a very good first impression. Not breathtaking but still really good.
As per plot it’s ok so far, but there a lot of holes in lore and weird moments overall. Don’t know how much of that is legit and how much just me not reading something where it was explained. For example how we became human Pathfinder. Like screw everything you are a boss now. Or how ships are flying without mass relays? That weird tunnel like thing in cutscene, what is that? Well, space crafts could fly between star systems in previous ME games, but not like it was fast and it required a lot of fuel (remember that fuel stations?). How small shuttles could fly all over the place (in one side quest we are chasing this tiny thing almost all over the map)? How this whole thing is even possible (even Reapers needed mass relays)?
Now to gameplay. Sadly almost nothing changed here since other MEs. It’s still the weakest part of the whole game as I see it. Difficulty level is all about making enemies into bullet sponges (and ramping up their damage too). I started playing Andromeda as stealthy sniper keeping in mind open world thing. That was a mistake. Why? Because enemies have two reactions on your shots: they just stand there (if you further than some mystical invisible line) or they start shooting back from machine pistols/assault rifle/machineguns with accuracy of my sniper rifle. Is it fun? Nope. But also there are mission fights when you start in CQC on some arena like area and that sucks too. Because you fragile, your weapon rate of fire is awful and you forced into CQC. I thought about taking tanky party members. That didn’t help a thing. Friendly AI is awful. It shooting walls, standing there doing nothing or whatever. And there are no taunts or something. And enemies are like “why risking with this huge armored krogan, get that skinny humie with sniper rifle”. So they will go after you anyway. So I guess class balance is still not there after 4 games. Add to that no quick saves or checkpoints! Only manual saves (not always available) or autosave. Get into 3 stage fight with gigantic robot and got killed on 3rd stage? Start over from 10 minutes before that fight. What a joy! So I don’t see any points in playing above easiest difficulty because it’s just pointless and frustrating.
So Andromeda isn’t an awful game like a lot of people trying to picture it. It’s an ok game that could be about 6 or 7 out 10 but it riddled with lots of technical problems. Not game braking ones, but still. So now it’s just 5 out of 10. If you’re thinking about buying Andromeda – I’ll say don’t do that now. Wait a bit for EA to fix some issues and for price to drop.

Based on public reactions I was not gonna buy the game and I still wouldn't. I only got to play the game because a friend who pre-ordered is on delegation and he gave access to his account.

I knew a lot of what to expect form the game already, but still I was trying to explore basically everything, until the issues got me and I was rushing the main story more and more and more just to be done with it. So here we go:

    Pros:
    - Environmental graphics - although there are some issues at times, for the most part it's absolutely stunning. This is the best looking space game to date, and tho there are not that many spaces games out there, believe me, some views will leave your jaw open, it can be really breath taking.
    - Combat - it's just great and dynamic, you have a lot of stuff (guns, powers, skills) to play with and customize your build, I think this is more fun than most shooter games out there. The small criticism I have here is dumb AI of your squad and lack of option to control them better
    - Main story - I wasn't intending to put it under the pros, but the story itself isn't bad all. It's nothing amazing, but it's perfectly alright. I wan't gonna list it under the pros, but I decided to split it from general writing, as such, understand "main story" as the events that happen in the game without its delivery.

    Cons:
    - Facial animations and character looks - this one is obvious one, it sucks, it feels dated, it feels unfinished and unpolished. It's worse than ME1. Facial animations are weird, disturbing and can make you feel uncomfortable. Character looks also has a lot to be desired. The worst part are the eyes - a cold, oversized eyeballs staring at you like the characters wouldn't have eyelids. It can look really scary and awkward. To quickly sum up, human characters (alien ones are much better done) feel more like androids or zombies than people. Character creation is also terrible - it feels like retard factory more than actual character creator.
    - writing - I will split it in few sections here. First, the character writing. I was not expecting this from Bioware, because the absolutely majority of them are basically puddle shallow generic, dull, emotion less characters with boring backgrounds. One the most boring character writing I've seen in video games (especially RPG) in past decade (not counting garbage like steam green light trash). Next is dialogue writing, which also has negative impact on main story delivery, which as already mentioned - is not that bad. To be perfectly honest, at times I would think the dialogues are written by a 10 year old. There are so many overly cheesy and pointless lines for an AAA game. Some of the lines are have even bad sentence structure and for such you would get F (or lowest equivalent degree) even in elementary school. This feels more like initial draft than final writing.
    - voice acting - not all of it is that bad, but overall a lot of voice actors just read the text without any intonation and emotion, just like a student reading of the powerpoint slides show during some presentation nobody has interest in.
    - User Interface (UI) - absolutely disgusting. I feel like it's done on purpose to waste my time with multi-layer sub-menus and overall awkward design.
    - Music - it's just lazy and boring and for most of the time there is no background music. The one is there - doesn't build the moment up at all.
    - Side missions - absolute most of it is boring fetch that has no real effect on your game progression. It's very repetitive structure kill the immersion and I'd rather just free-roam instead of going from point A to B to C and pressing a button, or picking up some irrelevant item.
    - Bug and glitches - there is quite a lot of them, it's various clipping issues, terrible graphical+physics glitches, like falling down thru floors, NPC standing in the air, or sinking in the ground and many more.

So, it's pretty bad and no doubt a huge disappointment in ME franchise. At this point I strongly recommend not to buy it if you have at least some self-respect. Sure environments look cool and combat is really fun, story itself is also not that bad, but for me these are secondary aspects and the primary aspects (characters, writing, voice acting and overall presentation) are from bad to terrible. So the absolute maximum I can give is 4 out 10 and even with that I kinda feel merciful.

ME2 and ME3 while also great games were a step back for me, because even though the action gameplay mechanics were considerably improved, the games lacked in other departments like exploration (Mako was taken away, the Citadel shrank in size, etc.) and seamless immersion (elevators taken away).
Andromeda is like a return to the roots for me with is stress on exploration, planets mining, Nomad riding. And, boy, do I adore space travel representation. Some people say it gets boring, but for me its not. The story is also top-notch, IMO, just as writing (it may seem childish to some, but for me it's not; on the contrary, it stresses that the characters, esp. Ryder, are all in all learning how to behave accordingly to the situation when responsibility suddenly falls on their shoulders, and the characters constantly grow). The squadmates are also quite diverse and interesting, and very layered.
As for the criticisms that most reviewers have like bad animations (honestly, upon watching some youtube videos I was a bit scared), bad lip sync, frame rate drops, etc, I haven't experienced any or they were unnoticable and hardly influenced my experience in a bad way. Now, the only criticism I can partially get behind is a lack of alien variety. However, as the game takes place only in a small portion of Andromeda galaxy, as the exploration continues to other parts (in sequels), I suppose we'll see more new species coming up.
So, my honest rating (based on the return of the sense of wonder that was present in ME1) is 9/10.

There's some glitchy animation, but that's true in every ME game ever. Bioware's strength is their stories and they do not disappoint this time around. The story is solid, engaging and has moments of hilarity as well as sadness. Combat is also leaps and bounds improved and far more entertaining than in previous ME games.

My biggest complaint of Andromeda is the script and the writing. It sounds like it has been written by an eager 14 year old trying to get into fanfic writing. Some of the dialogue is cringe-worthy and most of it is just bland and uninteresting. After 10 hours I couldn't be convinced to care about anyone I'd met and it didn't get any better.

The animation quality in general is terrible. Living in a post Witcher 3 world you could argue that of many games, but most games manage to make their characters convey some kind of emotion, here pretty much every character is a stone faced mannequin. No facial movement other than lips. Ever. Except the main character. It just feels so stilted.

The UI is garbage. That a PC title should be released with a UI in this state is just shocking. "Press ESC to Confirm". Really? Everything you want access to is buried under 3 layers of screens and clicking through them is a total clunkfest. They should actually sack the person who designed this UI.

Most of the game is purely fetch quests (the annoyance) and it just feels grindy as all hell. You can sub/resub to The Old Republic or WoW and have a better experience (and to be fair, a better story) for half the price.

The combat however is...good. It's a marked improvement and it really did feel pretty awesome even if the death animations were as bad as every other animation in the game and you don't have access to squad powers anymore, it was still pretty fun. Nowhere near enough to redeem the game though.

In short, this is what happens when you give your untested C-team the task of developing a triple A title under your flagship IP. Disappointing to say the least. I'm just so glad Origin does refunds now.
