If for some reason you needed more proof that Bioware is a now corpse-shell worn by unqualified SWJs pretending to be real developers, here is your Exhibit A through to F.

Horrible writing, awful combat and animation bugs we would mock in an indy title let alone a full price triple-A release. Utterly disgraceful.

This game is being unfairly destroyed. I am a fan of the saga and when you play it you feel you are playing a Mass Effect. I recommend you to buy this game if you really like Mass Effect 1 and 2. But if you are looking for something similar to ME: 3, don't buy it.

Continuiamo così...continuiamo a comprare.

Not a Mass Effect game. I'll put it like this: bad writing, terrible animations, decent game play (that's why it has 4/10) , but this is not Mass Effect. Better find a new brand name for this.

    Ah well.

I'm a little over 22 hours in and I am having a blast. I have no idea what people are talking about. The facial expressions (especially the eyes) are a little wonky, certainly, but the story / gameplay is super fun. It DOES take a bit of time to get to the main gist of the game, how all the components work, etc... (there is a LOT in this game, something we can all agree on). It's a big game...

Outside of some odd facial expressions and body movements during dialogue (eye roll), this game is flipping BEAUTIFUL. One of the best looking games I've ever played (saying a lot). Just amazingly gorgeous. The voice acting is superb, even if some of the writing sounded like it came from a 12 year old. While some here are talking about that, I've only noticed one or two things that made me stop and say "gah, they could have written something less cringeworthy there." To suggest ALL of the writing is bad would be dishonest beyond belief.

I think most of the criticisms here stem from this game not being the most perfectest Witcher 3 killer bestgameever right at launch, and only because expectations were so high for a beloved series. But I'm telling you... this game is massive, fun, gorgeous and is most definitely a very good game.

As you played with the main protagonist you really felt that every NPC and squad mates had a background and personal motivations which were revealed through well written dialogue. Actual game-play was functional enough (though restrictive) but I saw it only a way to forward the story. Antagonists felt like a real threat and they had their individual motivations to fight against the player. Afterwards I've imagined that Saren and Illusive Man would work fine as a playable characters in their own separate games.

ME: Andromeda stumble at crucial points but here's the biggest issue: Weak narrative. In ME-trilogy dialogue was there to push the story forward. If it wasn't then the dialogue built the characters and gave an insight to their background and motives for the player.

Andromeda fails the narrative and there is a reason for this which is weak directing by Mac Walters. He is a great writer (no doubt about that) but doesn't seems to know how to enliven written to a game world properly. It's a pity because the story, characters and dialogue has a huge promising which is never used properly.

After the poorly delivered story there is only a 3rd person shooter-RPG which is great but repetitive. Visuals are also great but unpolished from time to time. I had not game breaking bugs but a lot minor ones mostly with animations and scripting errors.

Summary: A huge disappointment for a Mass Effect fan but a decent shooter-RPG for a newcomer.

I really wanted to like this game, the series only got better after the original Mass Effect, and after a 5 year wait I had high hopes and expectations. I've played about 20 hours now and unfortunately it seems the wind in the sails of the series died out long ago (I'll update the review if any of that changes, but at this point I don't think I can take more punishment from this game without some major fixes). From funky animations, homely looking uninteresting characters, to a questionable story and boring repetitive gameplay. To make matters worse, the different parts of the game don't even mesh real well with one another; it's like the different teams of people that worked on different parts of the game failed to ever communicate with one another. It has left the game at launch to be one big dysfunctional mess.

Starting out it goes wrong real quick before you even enter the game. The default characters are certainly nothing to write home about, male Ryder is salvageable, but Female Ryder looks plain bad. Attempting to fix it in the CC is no easy task either. You cannot modify the default faces and the preset CC faces are one step above abominations. Once you decide upon a face, again another challenge presents itself in the form of a very simplistic CC, there aren't many options available and whatever you come up with will always resemble the preset face.

The poorly implemented animations hit you almost immediately and continue throughout. From odd facial expression to no expression at all, lifeless hands, strange walking behavior, and the biggest offender, poor lip-syncing to the dialogue, it plain out doesn't look good. It fails to suspend disbelief and for a game based on so much dialogue is difficult to get past. Aside from animations, graphically the game holds up, nothing mind-blowing or spectacular, but by no means bad. The landscaping is nice and much of the game looks good enough to immerse yourself in, the problem here is the characters stick out rather badly. They are cartoonish, waxy, and in some cases downright inhumanly ugly. The aliens naturally look better, mostly because there isn't a frame of reference for exactly "how" they should look, the humans are simply ridiculous. Some of them look like they were taken strait out of The Old Republic and just had new textures slapped on them.

Gameplay is okay at points and boring at others. The combat is familiar and largely unchanged from ME3, aside from the addition of the jet pack. The Nomad is okay to drive for about 10 minutes but quickly starts feeling more like a family van on a road trip than an APC. The lack of weapons was a terrible mistake and after awhile just getting in and out to fight things becomes a chore. The original developers dumped it for a reason; it should have stayed in the garage. The mini-games/puzzles are horrendously boring/frustrating, Sudoku, really? and mining for things, well I'm just not going to mine (really what was wrong with the orbital probe?) Missions are at best mildly entertaining and at worst mindless tedium, too much fetch filler and pointless dead-ends.

The story, at least to the 20ish hour mark is less than stellar. It takes a long time to get going and once it does, it feels more like the buildup to an aborted launch than an actual liftoff. It doesn't have the urgency or charm of the original series and it doesn't help that it is being played out by largely uninspired characters. The main antagonist seems more like a speed bump instead of that giant imposing stop sign that makes you take pause at what your are up against.

The developers it seems were out to make a game of a grand scope and scale and in doing so failed to see the little things that passed right by the wide angle lens they were using. Mass Effect was never about having vast landscapes to explore or tons of mindless things to do. It was about the story and characters, and the interaction of those two that made Mass Effect special. By attempting to make such a grand scale game they lost sight of that and ended up with a grand mess. What would have been wrong with simply making a Mass Effect game? Why try to turn it into something it is not, something that other games do so much better?

The Turian voice acting... is ok. The story doesnt hit me as well as the old series did, nor does the overall concept of it. Very few enemy types leads to repetitive combat. They took some of the better elements that mass effect 1 had, and tried to combine it with the elements that mass effect 2 did right... And for some reason, they failed at all attempts.

The nice thing is it is more open world, the movement is very nice and well tuned (least on the player side, animations are still hilarious at best), and the research system feels worthwhile... downside is everything is repetitive, very few enemy types, weapons feel completely useless, etc. I would say it has potential to be good... but right now, the damage system is my biggest complaint.. IT FEELS LIKE DRAGON AGE INQUISITION, WHICH I DISLIKED ALL TOGETHER!!!!!

While my love for the series as a whole has tempered my opinion to this game, I can honestly say for certain that after about fifteen hours into it I'm still enthralled. As Ryder, I've been taking my time exploring what the new setting has to offer, and have been going through the missions one step at a time. It's really taken hold of me, and I can't wait to see the end. (I've heard it's disappointing, but I'll let my own judgement decide that for me)

That being said, the game has issues. Lots of issues. Glitches, animation bugs, questionable design choices...The set pieces are nice, the RPG aspects of the Mass Effect series seem to be making a return from the original, the character customization might be a bit lacking in the appearance department and the...female models definitely leave a lot to be desired. These slightly mar the experience a bit, but it's definitely not enough to give this game anything below a 5 or a 6-point score.

Rather than giving it a point, though, what I want to do is RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR PURCHASE. It's not perfect, and the whole experience is kind of hampered by the fact that (1) a lot of folks were expecting so much and (2) it's riding off of the coat-tails (and the controversy that follows it) of Mass Effect 3, but I sincerely hope that they give Ryder their own trilogy to rival the original. There's a lot they can learn from with this game, and I hope they take those experiences to make the next one event better.

But I would argue that we need to view this as a new game. Aside from the physics and the races nothing is left of the of the original galaxy. No Shepard, no Normandy crew, no Reapers or Geth etc etc. This is important to consider. Aside from Sovereigns monologues and the warnings we had not much in terms of opposition. Saren was not that scary or good in my opinion. The Archon is a piece of work and fighting him at several turns is good and you feel accomplished when you escape
The characters are as always partly hit and miss. Some people hated Kaiden while they liked Ashley and vice versa. Most people hated Taylor and yes, he was the most boring character. We have one of those here too though his loyalty mission was good. The other characters are fleshed out. There is more comedy good in some cases unwarranted in others. I'm certain they will adress this later on.
The most glaring problem I have is that the writing of the dialog is on sadly many places a bit childish. I know this game is tailored to mostly young people and I'm no longer a child like when the first game came out though sometimes it can be cringe worthy listening to and I hope they will fix this in the future.
The Voice acting is as always very good and only suffers due to the less than stellar dialog. Mostly it works though.

The gameplay in my opinion is very good. The addition of jetpacks adds another dimension that has been lacking and the adaptability the player can enjoy if they want it is very good and also explained well. This was a concern I had but the combat system is better than in the original trilogy.

The face animations are not always spot on. That only concerns Human and Asari animation. The eyes are sometimes a problem but I think that's a bug but might be wrong. The Frostbite engine isn't good when it comes to faces but when I consider Vetra, Kallo and Drack I think they did well. Kallo's face close up looks almost lifelike.

The exploration is well done. But it suffers from scale. It's a bit too big but consider how it was in Mass Effect 1. Mostly empty planets. This is bigger and is their second attempt. Consider the influence the Dragon Age team might have had so its natural it might emulate it. Smaller scale might have been good but you need to see the planets.

Overall its a good start to a new trilogy and I'll hang around Bioware's games for a good while. They all have their issues in some ways but always deliver a very enjoyable experience in the end . Good job :)

This game, while not perfect and flawed in many ways, is still a Mass Effect game at heart and a damn good one at that. Currently I have not finished the game and am nowhere close and that is because I have already become so immersed in the world of Andromeda that I have literally done almost every single side quest i have run across. This game meets every single criteria you would expect from a Mass Effect game, great characters, compelling story and political turmoil, challenging decisions and in addition to that an amazing combat system. While the game does have its flaws and could have used some polish the animations are way overblown. Yes, sometimes they might be super distracting but I find that very rare. the one other thing I want to point out is that if you enjoyed Renegade in the original trilogy you, unfortunately, will be very disappointed. Your character while still molded around how you want to be cannot be the a**hole you made Shepard. Besides that i think Andromeda succeed as not only a being a good video game but a good Mass Effect game and if you are a fan of the series I highly recommend picking up a copy. Also for those of you saying the quests are boring, yes the actual side content might be boring, it is masked behind a compelling backstory, each and everyone, that makes each worth while and for those of you saying the writing is bad it is in noway worse than the original trilogy. My one other gripe with it is some iffy voice acting but considering there are over 1200 voiced characters, a few being iffy is okay and does not warrant a 4.2 score... not even close. Expand

SECOND: think about it! Assassin’s Creed Unity was a bigger shambles graphically, Destiny was in development for a similarly long time and had a worse ‘story’ in the core game, and No Man’s Sky was so far wide of the mark it’s nor even funny. And yet all three didn’t garner as much vitriol and are/were fixed through patching and DLC. Is it really fair that a AAA game like Andromeda is being judged on the merits of a generous 10-hour trial and deeper reviews of what is still not the final experience?

This game is phenomenal. Read my full honest review here -- https://reviewhonesty.wordpress.com/2017/03/22/first-blog-post/

Hacking game is Alien Space Sudoku.

    Sudoku.

Along with everything else that has been repeated, that one thing sums up the utter lack of imagination the EA Interns had when designing this game.

If only they'd applied the same amount of effort to the rest of the game, that they did to the sex scenes...

The awful animations just make me chuckle and mostly I just ignore them. It's a shame that the game's animations look worse than the original Mass Effect game that came out 10 years ago. Shame on Bioware. To me the one thing that makes or breaks this game is the boss battles. Which style of boss battle do you enjoy? Witcher III style (learn how to properly equip your character and conduct the fight then prepare to mash the same controls over and over for 15-20 minutes to win the fight and if you make a mistake at any point and die start all over from the beginning) or Fallout 4 style (learn what weapon options you have and use the right one and it's over in 30 seconds or less)?? The design decision to make the boss battles long drawn out repetitious affairs will result in my uninstalling the game like I did with Witcher III and never playing it again.

Bioware did a nice job with the different planets and the game looks really nice and everything seems fine with the gameplay as I have basically had no issues with it. The writing is not as bad as most people seem to think. It's ok, not outstanding by a long shot but not awful either. If you enjoyed playing the original series I think you will enjoy this game just fine even at the current $60 price if you can get past the long drawn out boss battles.

I don't understand the hate here. I think this game is solid. It's fun, choices seem meaningful. and the story is good. Aside from a few visual issues, the game is great. If it didn't have the ME tag on it then it would better received. A lot of this hate is unnecessary, this is definitely a 6 at the least.

Great game and i am enjoying every second of it! all of those haters out there are clearly just band-wagoning salty people who can't get over Mass Effect 3. Story, game-play, soundtrack, and characters are all lovable and memorable. Not as good as the original trilogy but definitely still a must play.

its like exactly like the other mass effects. if you dont like dragon age or the other mass effects dont buy it. combat is a lot more polished but it feels nothing like a fps. the moment you use push and pull combos and send people into orbit... makes that clear.
yes the story is a bit samey as mass effect 1 2 3 but the story on all of them where a bit samey. and isnt that what you want? its what i wanted a mass effect game...
honestly i would of given it a 8-9 but with 1s dragging it down ive given it a 10. deffinetly worth the purchase.
i dont get how people can give a decent game anything below 5. might not be a 10 for some but to me a 1 is if i cant get a game running or enter a game (for honor couldnt get into a multiplayer match still gave it a 6 on the single player campaign)

Starting with the worst and most restrictive character face editor I've ever encountered, it just goes downhill from there. The defaults all look like potatoes, and its practically impossible to change anything except in minor ways. No changing skin textures, eye shape, eyebrows, shape of nose, mouth, brow colour. It was only possible to create a white character by selecting the bottom preset face option and sliding the skin tone slider all the way to the left. So in effect, you've got one option. It was also impossible to save and retrieve the look of the character since the mass effect archive isn't working at the moment. Excellent.

So after that disaster it was into the game. There I immediately started experiencing all sorts of weird anomalies, with the character - neck stretching, warping and growing an adams apple(on a female) depending on how the character turned their head. For the NPC characters that didn't look god awful off the bat, there was a very strong uncanny valley effect. It just looks weird. And don't get me started on the eyes. Everyone looks like they're high on pseudo-ephedrine with massively dilated pupils. ugh. And the turians mouths with their detached flapping tongues...

Story wise, everything you've heard is true. The writing is terrible, with cliche'd companions and characters you just cant bring yourself to care about. I honestly just wanted to hand them over to the Kett or shoot them myself.

About the only redeeming features this game has is are the environments, which can look incredible, and the combat. But I'm not playing a Mass Effect game to shoot things. I'm playing it for the story, which is utter garbage. I gave up on this steaming pile after about 8 hours.

Thank you EA for finally killing Bioware off. Especially for having the temerity to offer this on a test basis. You openly advertise how bad it is, with issues in graphical optimization, animation, story (or lack thereof), lobotimized AI, and downgraded customization (from prior games made on same engine), while expecting something other than a flogging? Time to check yourselves into rehab.

I'll be perfectly honest: I wanted to like this game. I really, really wanted to like this game. I bought a new computer with a GTX1060 so that I'd be able to run it properly. I signed up for EA/Origin's Early Access trial so that I could play it sooner. I even ignored all of those people who were poking fun at the game's (admittedly terrible) animations.

    ...But it's impossible to like.

ME:A is nothing like previous Mass Effect games. In fact, it's pretty much their opposite.

    - Mass Effect was story-driven, whereas the story in ME:A feels like an afterthought

    - Mass Effect had gravitas, genuine humor, and meaningful choices. ME:A is just childish and silly, its attempts at humor fall flat in cringeworthy fashion, and none of your character's choices feel meaningful. Oh, and forget about the Paragon/Renegade spectrum -- it's paragon-only.

    - Mass Effect had well-defined, interesting, and meaningful quests. ME:A wants you to run around ridiculous open worlds on fetch quests, and quests like "scan 16 rocks." ME:A also forces you to play an awful lot of sudoku, which is totally infuriating. (Between the sudoku and the fetch quests, I had had enough, and returned the game for a refund.)

    - Mass Effect set a very high bar with its NPCs, who grew and evolved along with Cmdr Shepard. (Especially Garrus and Tali.) ME:A's NPCs are uniformly terrible. Especially bad are Peebee, who is basically an ugly and annoying version of Liara, and Cora, a human who LARPs as an Asari commando.

Now, as for combat, people say that the combat in ME:A is fine. I'm not sure I agree. I think that playing as a sniper is more rewarding and more interesting in ME:3. In ME2 and ME3, engagment distances were kept short due to the way the game was designed, but it was still possible to find a nice little nest and pick enemies off at a distance. In this game, due to the "open world", you can spot enemies from hundreds of meters away... but it's almost completely impossible to HIT anything past 120 meters in this game with the Black Widow sniper rifle, which is incredibly frustrating. (This is funny, as WWI infantrymen were effective at up to 1200 meters with their old 30'06 rifles, and engagements at 500m were, and remain, downright common. For more info see the US Military monograph: "Increasing Small Arms Lethality in Afghanistan: Taking Back the Infantry Half-Kilometer.") Also, the fact that you're limited to three skills, and can't control party members, really limits your options.

And there's no cannon or machine gun on the Mako/Nomad. This is also frustrating. A very questionable design choice.

If you like grinding MMOs, you might like this. If you like the Mass Effect of old, stay far away. This isn't really a Mass Effect game.

    - New Alien species
    - Characters are interesting, atleast your companions!
    - Part of the story is actually very interesting!
    - Jetpack!
    - Much lore to discover.

    Mixed:
    - The scanner, It is partly fun to use, but much of the scanning consists of completely unnecessary information.
    - Puzzles, can be both fun and repetive, overall its OK i guess.
    - I like the story but not a special part of it. (will not spoil)
    - The mechanics, we are in 2017, I think they should have developed the gameplay significantly in 5 years but I was wrong, it feels OK.

    Cons:
    - Animation feels strange and some characters can sometimes look completely retarded.
    - "character customization" is not what it says, you can choose from some preset faces and only change the nose and hair, other than that nope.
    - Expressions in dialogues may feel a little weird sometimes.
    - Bugs, not too many, but when it happens too often you become irritated.
    - The World doesn't feel "living".

Andromeda is a fun game but needs to be polished. The mechanics and the animation could be better and it would be good if the development team fixed the bugs as soon as possible. Just then I had been able to give the game a higher rating. I think that the good outweighs the bad, so give it a chance to play anyway!

First off I'll start by saying I was a huge fan of the original Mass Effect series. But coming into this game I recommend you don't expect more of the same or you might be disappointed.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a new start for the series and in my opinion its a great start at that despite some bugs which I'm sure Bioware will patch soon.

In typical Bioware fashion the characters are what makes this game great. Despite the at times wonky facial animations the characters are very well done. Conversations and interactions are deep and engrossing. My first talk with Suvi was particularly impressive. Bioware once again has outdone themselves with character development. And despite overwhelming disappointment in the graphics by many reviewers I find the game beautiful in 1080 and 4K.

Exploration is expanded greatly. The planets are huge and have much to do. Quests vary from mundane to exciting. The sheer size of the maps can be overwhelming at first but over time became much more manageable. The advancement of colonies is particularly interesting and your control over their direction adds a level of involvement unseen in previous ME games.

Combat really shines. Tight and intense firefights left me wanting more as combat can be scarce at times but overall very satisfying.

The inventory system takes some getting used to but its not a major problem.

Overall Mass Effect Andromeda is a step in the right direction after the completion of Shepards storyline. The story is epic and engrossing. Minor graphical issues aside the game is beautiful and the worlds deep and meticulously developed. Gameplay itself is a major upgrade over previous installments and really shines.

In closing don't feed into all the negativity. If you are a fan of scifi amd Mass Effect I strongly suggest trying the game and making your own decision. Many of the criticisms of the game are picky and overblown in my opinion. Mass Effect Andromeda wpuld receive a perfect score from me if it wasnt for some bugs that crop up from time to time. But overall a great game and well worth the 60 bucks. Another great job by Bioware.

So, because of the god awful coop mode that is simply broken and full of Micro transactions, I decided to rate 7/10 which is extremely sad considering this is MASS EFFECT!! And should live up to its legacy and is disappointing but for fans it is still a solid RPG experience.

    Single Player

Its buggy and glitchy, although I only really experienced a couple of minor issues with getting stuck on surfaces which fast travel fixed and another bug when using fast travel I got a weird "Tampering" bug which forced the game to shut down, so obviously there are some potential problems that need to be addressed.

The story of Ryder actually isn't nearly as bad as people make out, he/she has been thrust into a position of authority and as such, as a great burden placed on her shoulders - and its actually nice to see the character grow, her allies are all a bunch of misfits too - especially the lovable PeeBee who I'm sure will be a popular romance choice.

There are tons of options, from crafting gear to building a unique class from the wide array of skills available, you are not tied down to any one single set of class skills. All of the old favorites are back like the nomad exploration and planet scans for bonus materials, the only feel criticism so far is that space feels oddly empty, with limited planets for actual exploration and for random areas to explore and loot.

One thing that is sadly true, metacritic has gone downhill a lot in recent years - so many trolls or bottom feeders with fake reviews, or artificially increasing the score, the worst are the trolls who downvote because you haven't given it a 0 or a 10.

    Multiplayer Coop

Frankly, right now its broken and extremely awful. It is nearly impossible to complete a match without it crashing which is an issue Bioware needs to fix immediately, since it seems to be a common trend among people playing coop. To add further insults, there is no character customization - this is done via unlocking extra class/characters via loot crates (MTS), and you are only as good as your weapon which again, you want good weapons then hope for a good RNG roll when you open those loot crates.

Whilst you can earn in-game currency to open up loot crates, obviously it is a significant grind and sometimes you're not going to get anything good at all for that time spent, or you could unlock something that totally unbalances the game like the Krogan Mercenary so there is an obvious pay to win mechanic here, whilst its not PvP, the system still heavily favors people who spend $$$ and they'll always win...assuming even they can win a match without crashing.

The lag is also a major issue because they opted for a peer to peer multiplayer, meaning the host has a huge advantage whilst people who connect suffer from terrible lag spikes, sync issues and even rubber banding quite frequently. Whilst the coop mode is basically just a horde survival mode, it has the possibility to be fun but it needs fixing and some re-balancing.

Also, worthy of note - the coop is difficult. Expect a lot of failed missions, because the game demands a very good hosted connection, it demands you have excellent gear too which means, players who are not going to spend money will quickly get left behind, this will have a major impact in the near future when you start to see players being kicked because of low APEX ratings - essentially, Bioware got LAZY and just cut and pasted the ME3 coop system.

Regarding the actual game the combat is a huge improvement over previous mass effect games, its actually fun, you don't have to stay behind cover all the time, you can actually move around tactically and use all kind of cool abilities to deal with your enemy. The story is alright, so are the characters. Many people complain that the females look ugly, in my opinion they look alright. If you only care about looks you should stick to playing barby instead. Starts slow, then gets progressively better. Even the secondary quests.

Exploration is good, combat is way better though, lots of choices in how to spec your character. They removed most of companion control in combat because I guess most didn't bother enough, you can still trigger combos by telling them to attack a specific target at the right moment. Worlds are awesome but I must say, the bits showed in the trial are not the best representation of them (you are VERY limited there, so if that's your worry I can tell you the trial doesn't do it justice).
For some reason most of the problems with animations and facial expressions are condensed in the first 10-15 hrs of the game, then they become a rarity.

    Graphic is top notch.

Can't fully judge the story yet, but 34 hours in I would give it a 7.5.

Multiplayer is good fun, spent a ton of time on the mass effect 3 multi and this is very similar so I imagine I'll play this a lot too.

Definetly has many flaws- face animations are important for an rpg-based player like me since they kind of break immersion, also game doesn't seem so interesting as previous franchise entries. But if they fix those graphics and minos bugs and glitches I would give it an 8 maybe cause it's still enjoyable

Directing and Cinematography 6.5/10 - Comparing the directing style to the previous Mass Effect Trilogy, there are many harsh cuts, interrupt zoom-ins and close-ups. There seems to be a lack of pans. The cinematography style is a bit bland at times, which in this case, at all time. It is but not as bad as Dragon Age: Inquisition though, where you have to download a crappy mod-manager and a mod for goddamn zoom-ins.

Gameplay and Combat 10/10 - Hella fun.

Graphics 7.5/10 - Honestly, the Frostbite engine is never any good when it comes to realism. Plus, Bioware always sucked at character creations. Everybody's damn ugly. Even Scott. No offense to the extremely sexy face models.

Animations 5/10 - Everything is fine. Except for the facial animations of course. The change from Unreal Engine to Frostbite may have caused the many problems, and it's possibly due to the fact that the animators had to start it up from stretch and plus the developing team that worked on the game are relatively new and inexperienced. The patch helped, but the characters do still seem a bit stiff, even compared to Dragon Age: Inquisition, which was also made from the Frostbite Engine. The developers seem to be also trying some experimental motion capture. Which doesn't look very good. Right now the characters look like they're always kissing the air, and it's Uncanny Valley at its max thanks to the experimental facial motion capture combined with the already poor facial animations. Better luck next time. But it's an alright start.

Very very strong opening for 2017, hope that this continuous, the industry was plugged by playing safe, take no risks ,no innovation,no love games like Andromeda.

Because even though they don't bother me, they cannot be ignored.
The game overall though is fantastic, for the first time in any RPG game I've played (and I have played many), I don't feel like a messenger boy, I feel like I am a leader that is actually trying to search for the golden world for us survivors to thrive on. The mechanics of the game rather you're walking, driving in the nomad vehicle, or fighting you're way through the foes you come up against, it all feels natural. character animations 'CAN' be really good at times, sometimes it 'CAN' be pretty bad, which sometimes it won't bother me, sometimes I will laugh, it still makes me wonder if they game was pushed out to early. The planets that you go to never feel the same, they have wonderful environments and each one with different survival elements that you need to come up with different strategies for each planet so you don't get caught up in it and eventually die. I won't to go on about how much I love this game, and hopefully Bioware will continue to work on this game with fixes and some optimization issues, but overall I believe this is an amazing game, and if you're a Mass Effect fan, and get past some of the off glitches that happen here and there. They really are adequate, not good, but the characters get the job done. The real problem with this game is death by a thousand cuts. Any one of them would be forgivable by itself. But there are dozens of minor problems all the way from every single aspect of design to outright bugs. There are so many annoyances, i'll list several below. I accidentally wrote this review in the PS4 section, so I'll add to it this time around. And before I poop on the game further I'll say one nice thing.. The galactic nav-system from a graphical point of view is probably the best in the series.
    Combat:
The combat is super weak and totally unsatisfying. The cover system is a major step-down from it's predecessors, and doesn't viscerally lock you in place. Compared to other cover based shooters, this game is sub-par by far. On harder difficulties the enemies can melt you whenever you accidentally break cover, which is super easy to do for a plethora of reasons. Your NPC companions are best used as distracting meat shields while you dish all the damage. Combat is by the numbers with cover playing more as an annoyance than anything else. Encounters usually boil down to dying once or twice until it randomly plays better. The player just doesn't have firm control over the battles. Cheese tactics reign supreme here. Just hide and force the AI to chase you down a corridor. The combat is just horsesh**. Coupled with inexplicably abysmal frame rates in combat I'm just not sure what EA intended to push out the door. (I'm running a GTX 1070) Saving and loading stabs me in the gut constantly, because the game is constantly killing me and erroding my progress. If you create a game that is constantly wiping your players due to unpredictable behavior, you should include a quick save/load. This leaves you having to reloot everything you just did from 5 minutes ago. The unpredictable behavior that is causing these deaths comes in the form of input/graphical lag, an inability to know when enemies have flanked you due to not having a proper 2d radar minimap, and weapons missing targets at critical moments because even fast guns have slow projectiles.
    Level design:
If you are going to encourage people to explore your maps don't create death traps and ledges that look like they need to be explored. I'm constantly annoyed rooting around for loot. Half the time I'm rewarded, half the time I die or relize a ledge or platform which should be clearly out of reach that I just got to goes nowhere or can be accessed later. It's a waste of time, but I'd rather not have to ever come back and explore the terrible levels for something I missed. They are so bad I never want to come back. I NEVER had that feeling in ME 1&2. Along with level design is the god-awful vehicle. Just give me 4 tires, is slowing to a stop like a tank every time I need to turn a feature!? There is a reason we use vehicles with 4 wheels NOT 6. The reason this is in the level design section is that there is clutter everywhere, so turning as it turns out is VERY important. Essentially your average speed could be 70k/ph in practice it's probably 35k/ph.
I have to stop this rant, it could literally never end. There are problems EVERYWHERE. This is a game in early beta. It was never polished. The best thing I can say about it, is that it never crashed one time. Which is pretty awesome, as for the rest of it....
    Conclusion:
This game amounts to nothing more than minimum viable fan service. ALL you have to do to make a successful ME game is take the best parts of ME 1&2 and turn that into an exploration game. Stop trying to make this an epic cinematic experience. These story lines are all used up. I don't need a super villain, I don't need to bang all my crew mates, just create a survival type game where I get to explore space, uncover mysteries, and upgrade my gear, base, ships etc.. Just use the ME universe, reference what you already made, and boom happy gamer (assuming you actually play test it). Please make Bioware great again. I never thought I would say this but Trump you're the only one who can save the franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the trilogy so I was excited for this but then this was such a disappointment. Don't get me wrong combat was good, I really liked it but this took five years to make right? Well what's up with some of the animations? How would we feel connected to the squad (like the trilogy) if they had dead eyes? Limited character creation as well, how come there's some unnecessary dyes for hairs but we can't make our characters white? Should've kept the way Inquisition cc had but improved. This has lazy writing as well, do you think some of the lines were funny? NO. They're cringeworthy. Trilogy wasn't perfect at it but at least it was good! And this problem you had with M/M romances, Cora has full on sex scene but Gil just fades to black? You literally promoted your game that it would have amazing romance scenes! - and the point that makes a game more than great, that has made many people believe accounts to simply give a 0 to this game in all its versions.
    -has Great difficulty.
    And now the negatives:
-The animations are a little more work.
    - It was hurriedly released this month, could have been better.

Conclusion: It's a very good game mechanically, if it gives you a bit like the animations then you patch it.

Scanning planets and side quests, can result in fatigue in its repetitiveness.I was not able get to know the whole story but after ten hours I can say that unfortunately some dialogues are quite naive or even violate the laws of logic. It's discouraging. In my opinion the new Mass Effect takes a step back towards trilogy in every aspect (of course beyond the graphics). So sorry to see such a fan like me on what's going on with the brand, as with the movie SW the Force Awakens movie. I'm not a graphic junkie so it'll rarely effect my decision. I feel people come into this expect Mass Effect 4, you can't do that... it's a different beast all-together. You'll get some things that link to the old games, because they're in the same universe but different galaxy. So, open your minds and expect a brand new game, not mass effect 4.

    Positives:
-Graphics are beautiful (even with the occasional wonky face and glitch)
-Controls are easy to use and very easy to customize.
-The Mass Effect 1 item system is back
    -Dialog galore
    -Combat is fun
-Characters clash, feels like the trilogy.
-Keeps the look and feel of the original games.

    Negatives:
-NO QUICKSAVE or ability to save on a mission.
    -Faces can be wonky sometimes
-The constant having to watch your ship fly in and out of orbit of planets and into each system...
-Dialog galore, yes it's a positive if that's your thing. They did go a bit overboard with with random NPCs.
-Some conversations don't make much sense.
-CUSTOMIZATION OF YOUR CHARACTER SUCKS. You get 9 choices, edit those choices, but not enough to make a character unique, you pick face 1? It will always look like face 1, you can't change it enough to make it unique.

Andromeda was Bioware's 'Break in case of emergency' game, and it certainly was an emergency for the company. However, the game has so many overarching flaws that it fails to live up to the low expectations that ME3 left.

The world(s) is pretty, but uninteresting. What a shame.

Content is...lackluster to say the least and the game ends up having a lot of bugs as well as the same issues that ME 1-3 had with conversations that should have been fixed considering they worked on this for 5 years. Honestly, if this is what Bioware puts out, then I can safely say I won't be purchasing another game made by them. As for this game, It's already been approved for a return so I won't be bothering with it again either. Expand

Atari's ET 2600 has more narrative falling down a pixelated well than this mess.

This is the problem with hipstery creators... they don't get that they don't get what videogaming is all about.

Theirs a load of problems with this title but its still tolerable. Just needs some more polishing then I believe it will be worthy of a 7/10. Its not the best, but its also not the worst. Some parts are really injoyable then get ruined by the poor voice acting or animations. the beginning is really bad then it picks up a tad about 8 hours in. Best to probably pick it up on sale. Standard Mass Effect game, with a heavy focus on the squad and camaraderie. Overall, very solid and relaxing.

Pros: Combat is a huge step up from ME3, which was already pretty good compared to ME1 and 2. Worlds are great, and navigating them is usually pretty fun. I like the squad more within the first few hours than I had liked the original cast after the entirety of ME1. This

Great VA work from your crew.
    Enemy design is diverse.

    Cons:
Bugs. Excusable given the scale of the project.
Some of the characters are pretty ugly. Good thing helmets exist.
I strongly dislike Kumail Nanjiani's VA. He doesn't make a good Salarian.
Nomad looks cooler than it performs. Who knew the big car can't go up hill at >20kph.
Side quests can be kinda boring compared to ME3 loyalty missions or Witcher 3 (go here, kill that, come back).
    They brought elevator rides back...
Multiplayer difficult jumps very steeply. We've gone from crushing in Bronze to getting crushed in Silver.

I have 30+ hours into this game and the only thing that breaks emersion is the bugs and frame rate drop. This may sound odd, but I think Bioware is officially dead, and by picking apart this game I get a pretty good post mortum analysis. Everyone has already pointed out that the team that made Andromeda doesn't actually have any members of the staff that worked on ME2, but it goes deeper than just that. The people EA have let work on one of their shiniest franchises are majority hacks. I pointed out earlier that it feels like a fanmade romhack and I think thats really what this is. The main story is pretty **** but at least its follow able, but the side parts of the game is really what tear it apart. Space in Mass Effect has never felt so empty. No locations feel like living spaces with unique atmospheres like Omega and the Citadel did, and none of the party members are likable what so ever. Creepy faces aside the writing is just not good. It's average, and average for the video games industry is really, really bad. So what is a bioware game without good writing and set design? Bad, really, really bad. Save your dough, Mass Effect and Bioware are dead. RiP good Franchise. Expand

This game, while it has its flaws at launch (animation), is amazing. Honestly, following in ME1-3's shoes is an overly difficult task, but Bioware succeeded in delivering a f***ing beautiful game with a great story line and a semi-open world environment in which you can do things that you only could have dreamed of in ME1-3.
