I don't really understand the negativity for this game.
It may have its flaws but there's a ton of fun under the surface.
Personally I'm really intrigued with the story, I guess it's just my cup of tea. I like the feeling of being an alien, an outsider, in a completely new galaxy. The combat feels very satisfying and rewarding. I also like the characters, especially the Tempest crew.

Let me preface this by saying that I've owned and played every CRPG that Bioware has ever made (minus SWTOR). Mass Effect 2 is probably my favorite game of all time.

Mass Effect: Andromeda couldn't be more of a disappointment if it tried. Bioware learned nothing from Dragon Age: Inquisition, and ME:A "borrows" all of its terrible aspects, while retaining very little of the few things

I recommend it anyway. It's a fun game and that is what matters to me.

Since Metacritic found it suitable to delete my previous review I'll write another one. This is in no way shape or form like any of the other Mass Effect games. It's only Mass Effect in name only. Absolutely ruined a great franchise and made it into a buggy, horrible acting, 2005 style graphical piece of crap.

After Inquisition the next disaster from Bioware.
The key element of the Mass Effect series is linear gameplay with focus on story, companions, engaging quests and cinematics and NOT on exploration and open worlds!

Thankfully, for multi-billion dollar monsters such as EA, people with skills can be bought and sold and put to work for whatever the corporate design demands, in order to influence the masses away from being effective.

The real-world wonder and discovery of extra-terrestrial life and technology is, most likely, filtered and manipulated by government and the aptly named "elite". In which case, Mass Effect: Andromeda does a great job as it mirrors the constant watering-down of our potential, for temporary monetary gain.

The question remains, why do key elements suffer on a $40 million blockbuster???
Wise consumers see through the hype and cheap tricks, sooner or later.

Hi! Come on up here sit next to me *points to chair* I see you made it past the troll fields, and cynical castles. Good. Let's real talk for a moment.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a very good Mass Effect game. It is more akin to Mass Effect 1 with its rover exploration but sans the boring hours of just rolling over cliffs and rocks. In fact the rolling open world exploration actually has purpose and sense, you're job as Pathfinder is to overcome multiple obstacles to deploy an outpost on a planet. Dispose of a band of Kett, activate an atmospheric filter, deploy a station there and before you know it you'll see a living colony appear on this previously alien and barren planet.

Like Mass Effect 1, there is a constant suspicion this is leading to something bigger but you wouldn't know it in the opening 10 hours. There is minor build up in plot, instead there is heavy exposition and explanations for what the Andromeda Initiative is. Further, there is a ton of new character introductions that slow the pace down. However, Mass Effect 1 was in its day a near perfect game, brilliant in so many aspects especially the middle to end game. So why the Andromeda hate?

    Completely unfounded.

Yes SOME facial animations are bad (especially Standard FemShep and Director Addison holy moly those are bad). However its not game breaking, watch the scenes and move on. There are also some goofy sequences that seem unpolished and rough but again not game breaking just a little jarring. These are far and few between. And highly overshadowed by Andromeda's much improved combat. Grenades, biotics, bullets, energy beams, everything sizzles and just comes to life in a smooth and visceral way. It is by far the best executed ME combat ever done, which is far more important than a perfect digital smile.

Art design, solar system layouts, costumes, aliens, are just GORGEOUS to behold. As far as the writing goes, I am not sure where the complaint comes from with this. Its just like every other Mass Effect game, except I like most of the companion AIs and love interacting with them. There are several laugh out loud moments, not tongue in cheek, I mean HARR HARR out loud soda coming out of my nose moments, which is rare for a game.

Is it perfect? No. Does it feel like an amazing first chapter? Absolutely! If you liked Mass Effect this is a must purchase, and if you love listening to trolls that repeat the same thing the last guy said and rate 0 then don't check this out. However if you have any inkling towards action rpgs, a good sci fi game, superb combat, and gorgeous landscapes/visuals, then don't hesitate to try ME: Andromeda!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this game is just weird in too many ways. Bioware claimed they learned from the complaints about DA:I yet they included more fetch and go there quests than ever. Now if this is your thing, you can probably look at it as a positive because there are really loads of them, dozens upon dozens. Yet in the age of Witcher 3 in which even the smallest quest had a good story and often times good and satisfying mechanics this is just outdated and this style of MMO quests is what a lot of people complained about with DA:I so:

    - loads of fetch quests
    + loads of fetch quests

Weirdly enough the game looks very much worse in many ways than DA:I, especially when it comes to facial animations, environment, movement etc. It also performs much less well even though EA has loads of experience with the Frostbite Engine (DA:I, FIFA 17) and all those games look quite good and perform very well even on low end systems. On the flipside, if you do have a really good system this game can and will look absolutely stunning HOWEVER most people simply don't own a system like that and it is inconceiveable to me why a game that uses an engine that generally performs well on PS4 and XBOX One as well as older systems all the while giving you really nice graphics suddenly is so bad on the technical side (animations, loads of glitching and even some getting stuck, massive frame drops)

    - a lot of technical issues which seriously impact the whole game experience
+ can look stunning if you can afford a system priced around 4.000 Euro

A major problem, also to some degree criticised in DA:I is the very immature and corny writing. A lot of the dialogue is aimed at people aged 21 and younger, Loads of superficial babbling about nothing at all and just in general very much below the Bioware Standard of even DA:I. They also abolished the Renegade and Paragon system in dialogues and replaced it with professional, optimistic, realistic and funny comments from which to pick. Unfortunately they just trashed the original system and did not actually replace it with anything. Most of your choices will still lead to the same outcome. I had that happen several times. Yes you are given the chance to respond in the tone you want but you won't be able to say no or yes if the quests demands you accept or refuse. Also noticeable is that in a lot of dialogues with teammates and others you are limited to realistic or optimistic approaches. One example would be a discussion with a crewmember about her faith. You can either say: yes I also believe in a higher power or absolutely rebuke her and say: nah there is nothing like that. It feels forced and really rude especially given that: I don't know but I keep an open mind on all possibilities or I do not believe in a higher power, but I won't look down on you for believing would be viable options here that a normal human being might choose. The real problem is though that unlike Paragon or Renegade your Ryder doesn't actually form a personality which leads to different answers or a different general behaviour. You can answer professional all the time but your character will still act quirky and youthish which simply means that you can not really form him or her. Furthermore a lot of the voice acting is just plain bad. Not in low quality or what not but a lot of the voice actors simply sound bored and are just rattling off text.

    - corny and bad writing
    - limited choices in dialogues
    - bad voice acting on a lot of important characters
    - no personality system

The companions aren't bad. If you are looking for a new Garrus or Wrex/Grunt or Tali or even a new Joker... no luck here. Like I said they aren't bad but this is a serious step down from DA:I especially given that Freddie Prince Jr. absolutely killed it as Bull. He was incredibly good and so were the guys who did Dorian, Varric and the gals who did Sera and Cassandra... there is nothing of that quality here.

    - mediocre companions

A lot of core mechanics are just plain bad and or boring. The User Interface (to assign skills, research, find your journal etc.) is unorganized and a mess even for a console optimized UI. It's hard to find stuff, to organize or to even remember where stuff was. The scanning mechanic is very tedious and boring after a while and is basically just some padding to hide the fact that you are on yet another fetch quest. You can not check your mails via your omnitool, you always have to get back to your ship which not only means entering the ship but also means taking off with it and watching an unskippable cutscene. Planetmining is back and it is as boring as in ME2 and gets more tedious by the fact that every time you want to check a planet it zooms in too far as a graphic effect and then zooms out again, every time.

    - the core mechanics of the game are flawed

I would advise waiting for the game to drop to maybe 20 Euro/Dollar before buying it, it's simply not worth 60 bucks.

Mass Effect Andromeda is an absolute embarrassment not just by the standards set by various games or the level expected in 2017; it is even inferior to all its predecessors. To think this had a $40,000,000 budget and 5 full years of development; it is completely unacceptable and Bioware should be relieved of the brand and disbanded before further damage is done.

To think this had a $40,000,000 budget and 5 full years of development; it is completely unacceptable and Bioware should be relieved of the brand and disbanded before further damage is done.

I'll keep it reasonably short as the crippling flaws are rather self-explanatory and well-known;- the story is very underwhelming for starters and is further complimented with some of the most atrocious script writing and voice acting I have seen for years. There may be 1200 voiced characters in this game as proudly stated by the developers but none of the 'actors' are skilled and most sound like they were just reading off a piece of paper instead of delivering compassionate, dramatic and engrossing dialogue. It's an utter shambles.

The most glaring problem as we are all fully aware of is simply the facial and physical animations of the characters, It is borderline comical at times and with all the remarkable audio/visual motion capture companies in the world today; it is baffling as to why Bioware decided to do this in-house at great expense and with hilariously bad results. The original Mass Effect along with other ageing games like LA Noire put Andromeda to shame in this regard and I'm left scratching my head as to where the $40m budget was allocated.

In terms of the gameplay; it's absolutely boring and tedious especially when there is no engaging story or characters to become absorbed in. Generic shooting, horrendous AI along with bland and barren worlds just makes you want to accelerate to the end. You can either speed through 20-25 hours or try and get your money's worth of 50+ hours with all the side quests but you'll soon become fed up of the game as a whole. Co-op MP horde mode can be fun but the same experience can be enjoyed in other cheaper games. This one is certainly undeserving of your money especially when so many aspects are unpolished or unacceptably poor.

I'd wait five years until it's free on the Origin Store and even then it might no be worth your time. Call of Duty overstayed its welcome and declined terribly and so did Assassin's Creed. Mass Effect is teetering on the brink of joining them as its legacy is now in tatters with Andromeda.

I mean, yeah, you can trashtalk animations, they are bad (facial animations, I don't have any problem with body animations, and I have yet to encounter one of those gamebraking bugs seen on gifs), but to trashtalk the story, based on a 10 hour demo...

Also, I don't know if people has bad memory or something, I replayed all 3 mass effect on february, and the AI of the companions... well... you can send them to a position... make them use a skill... and that's pretty much it, yeah, just like andromeda.

The nostalgia pink glasses are SO strong with this game, replay the old mass effects, and, aside of the facial animations (again, they are atrocious in andromeda), there's a lot of aspects that people seems to have forgoten, or they just don't remmember how they were made in other Mass Effects.

The one thing that I hate, is the feminist agenda, that's laughable, every single girl on the game is a "normal girl" a.k.a absolutely horrible so feminist don't get triggered. Beyond that, you can;t even make a white character in the game besides the default one.

Gameplay wise, is miles ahead of the rest.

    Giving a 10 to compensate the nonsense 0 reviews, I'd give it a 7 or 8.

Combat is massively improved and much more engaging despite losing some of the tactical nature of previous entries.
    World design is superb.

really really poor story - in the old mass effect humanity found these gates that can jump travel called the mass relays - ok cool

in this new game you are suddenly able to mass relay by yourself in a new galaxy that is only 600 Light years away

if it was so easy , why dint the reapers do that , cleans the other galaxy i mean they did it every 50,000 years

what the **** is 600 years for them ?

story is BS from start to finish - huge gaps in story line -

compared to mass effect 1 where i had tears when i saw shepard becoming the first human specter and going over the galaxy using the mass effect relays to solve the impeding doom - now that was story line.

this game has nothing close to it .

plus games is buggy as hell - and not the small type - huge bugs

i was kicked out of the game a few times for no reason , i need to come within a inch of a object for the vegetation around it to appear , this is on ps4 !!!

its acting as if it has no ram

i am a hardcore fan of most rpgs , loved the mass effects and i am from Montreal ( main studio for this game )

Instead of the black and white (or rather, red and Blue) Paragon/Renegade choices from the first three games, your dialog choices are based on response type, e.g. snarky, professional, etc and are more grey. This allows you to decide how YOUR Ryder acts in a given situation. The writing isn't on par with Mass Effect 2 by any stretch, and let's face it, Mac Walters is a decent writer but can't compare to Drew Karpyshyn. Still, the story makes sense and fits the theme of the game and the individual character developments are well-done. There are, however, some characters that don't sound right. Director Tann is voice by Kumail Nanjiani who was very good in Silicon Valley. His voice just did not fit as a Salarian. There are others but overall the acting and writing is done fairly well.

People complain about the animations and while there are some noticeable animation failures, Andromeda still has much better animations than any of the previous games.

Ultimately, this game is focused on exploration of both a new Galaxy and new characters. It does both well, though there is room for improvement. The game is worth playing, very much so,

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, just a short note. this game is not a 2, But it's not a 10 either. I'd say 6 or 7 depending on how BW responds to fixing the bugs..

The story is comparable to the usual Hollywood blockbuster crap disaster film we see every summer. So don't expect serious drama. But it does have it's moments. Some touching. And some funny.

The game is beautiful. The planets, space, your ship - just beautiful. The human NPC, are not. Sadly, BW seemed to focus on the aliens and not humans.

I'm not gonna go over the animation issue - that's been hashed out everywhere. But I will say this: do not play the default female character - Sara. She's just bad. If you want to play default, choose the brother, Scott. He's much better. Or run your own.

There other issues, none of them game breaking. But some are just damn annoying . like no Quick Save.

The romances are meh. If you want to play a gay character (male) good luck. There are two and both are crap. The best I've hear so far are lesbian and straight Ryder (of course). BW took a step back in this regard. If you played DAI, you'll remember Dorian. One of the best and beloved characters from that game. Do not expect any characters like that in this game. The companions can not compare to any previous ME game. They aren't bad. But they just can't compare.

There's in no Garrus, or Kaidan, or Wrex in this game. BW tries, but like I said, it mostly falls flat.

The combat is fun. And if you've never played ME before you probably won't be too upset about the characters. But if you have, you will miss the older characters.

Maybe as i play more they will get flushed out

Here is the long version, starting with the writing's issues.

There are too few pieces to the plot and too little depth to those pieces, so the game doesn't impart any particular feeling of grandiosity or mystery. This is partly because of how the game paces its reveal of the plot elements, giving too much away and expecting the player to immerse themself with minimal assistance from the game. This is to say that immersion feels more like an exercise in role-playing than a rewarding dive into an living narrative.

In other Mass Effect games, the rich and varied perspectives that characters shared with you engage you emotionally and get you thinking about what is happening in the game for reasons other than your first-hand experience of the story. You had a character interaction for its own sake; you gained an incisive perspective on the narrative as a side effect, which gave your enjoyment of the game new layers. In this game, however, there isn't a single character that a reasonable person above the age of fifteen would find compelling. Without exaggerating, I can say that they all come across as unintelligent and, in some cases, affected to the point that they are not believable as characters. This includes the protagonist, Ryder.

That is the main issue with the game. Everything that follows could have been overlooked if the writing was good. I'll even say some nice things below; almost tragically, there are a lot of good things about this game that hardly matter because of the writing and the pointless mess of a UI. These things are so good that, if the UI were good, too, I would play this game for the action and non-story RPG elements.

Alright. You have probably heard that the game's facial animation is bad. It's true; the animation is worse than it was in the first Mass Effect. The conversations are about halfway between interactive movie and visual novel because of it. As you might guess based on that, facial animations often sync up especially poorly with player-designed faces. This effectively limits your options for appearance-customization. That's nothing new to Mass Effect, but if, like me, you are profoundly unimpressed with the default appearances for Ryder, you're not going to be satisfied with how your character looks at any time that you can see their face.

When the face is out of view, safely enshrouded in the 'helmet always on' setting or whatever your solution is, the armor's pretty good. In fact, the game is visually stunning overall if you can disregard its hitches. On my high-end build, the only graphical issues I have are choppy cuts between shots and a strangely flat look to the world, the latter of which I am now realizing is partly a projection of my lack of desire to move forward in this game's 3D space.

For others, the game has serious performance issues that I won't go into here. Just sniff around for a few minutes; you'll find them, especially for console (even though you're in the wrong review section for that, you hasty clicker you).

Combat is decent for three main reasons. The first is the graphics, the second is Ryder's maneuverability, which includes vertical movement, and the third is Ryder's leveling and ability progression. You don't select a class; you choose from all of the game's available powers when spending points gained from level-up. This means that you can approach combat the way that you want; Ryder almost feels like he/she is yours in combat because of just how much you can personalize your combat style. Almost every time you use your powers looks and feels special because of the graphical quality and the ways that enemies are affected by your attacks; those animations and effects are interesting and believable. Together with fairly good hitboxes, this means that intense observation of and adjustment to your enemy mid-firefight is more rewarding. Knowing that paying attention to the details in the beautiful graphics yields rewards in gameplay enhances my enjoyment both in combat and in exploration.

If you want to know about exploration and side quests, just look up Dragon Age: Inquisition. Essentially, side-quests are too random to care about and exploration is too time-consuming to be worth it, even though you gather resources for weapons and armor by exploring. The successful integration of the side content into the game only injects dead periods into the already questionably paced main story.

BioWare, if you've suffered through this, just get your gameplay elements into a tighter flow and smack whomever was in charge of your writers' direction. By the way, 5k.

The writing was so bad that I was laughing half the time at the unintended humor. Once the dialogue makes you really cringe you can always go scan something. I thought the DA: Inquisition dialogue was shallow and plastic, but they managed to make things worse.

The voice acting was milquetoast, but I really can't blame the actors considering the content they had to work with.

On the plus side, it installed without destroying my hard drive and only ctd's once or twice.

Dragon Age: Inquisition 2.0, now with space travel!

    Such bad animations

    Really poor dialog

Lots of fetch quests, without meaningful choices & consequences.

AI gets in the way. How did AI get this bad?

Only good thing from the game is the feel of the combat.

This has got to be the most shallowest game I've ever played. It's even shallower than Dragon Age: Inquisition. There is just a lot of lack of content on the worlds you explore, the animations are poor, the story doesn't feel right.

This is a AAA game? It feels more like a budget indie game. EA would do right if they get Bioware to just release dlcs for free and make up for this

There is beauty in this game, it's just not in the characters or the script or the animation. I've really enjoyed visiting worlds and actually being able to explore them; not confined to a series of corridors. The combat has been solid, challenging, and a lot of fun. Plus, jetpacks.

    - The animations are comically broken and terribly done to the point that I couldn't believe the actual game could be like that. This alone is so distracting and horrid that it makes the game unplayable.

    - The voice acting is so bad it's almost like they intentionally wanted it to be horrible. Completely detached from what's going on.

    - SJW/brain damaged virtue signaling everywhere, absolutely everything reeks of it.

    - Insufferable cast of "look at at us we're diverse and not cis white men" jack-offs who couldn't possibly be more repugnant if the writers tried.

    - The writing is so poorly done that I don't believe it was written by anyone with any past experience.

I guess this is what happens when a team of experienced game producers quit and the jobs are given to psycho SJWs with zero past experience in the field whose only goal is to hate on white people. Turns out it makes for a pretty broken and unplayable game.

Try playing with the approach that this is a total new game, a total new story. After travelliing over 600 hundred years, in the hope of a new paradise to colonise, everything goes wrong. You then take the command of the pathfinder, and must find a plan b to save the whole colony from certain death.

There it goes. It is now about exploration, scavenging and survival. Breath-taking graphics, gameplay and animations. YES, animations. At least in 2560x1600 resolution, ultra settings and constant 60 fps. 1080ti owner here. I don't blame the people who are getting glitches in every corner of the game, but don't expect fixes in the first two days if you are running this game on a **** pc/console/video card.

The dialogues are simple, yet precise and effective. The music perfectly fit in every situations, while the voice acting is pretty solid. A whole new set of characters, that if you take time to interact and know them intimately will start growing in you. Combat is flawless, nothing to say about it. and LOL about the critics about the jet-pack, this is a sci-fiction game, it add so much to it !

So if your all about endless exploration and side quests, scavenging new discoveries and gorgeous places, get this game. You are the enemy in this new galaxy, even if you came in peace. Only the stronger will survive.

O and even for those who are actually waiting to buy this game in sale, I would advise not to. Donald trump will soon start a third world war and there will be no one left to play this jewel. Just my two cents.

I don't understand why people got so obsessed with some graphics issues like the animations etc. This is just a minor annoyance. As a whole, this thing just screams sub-par. NPCs have absolutely zero interesting things to say, companions are incredibly boring, the "planet restoration" quests are just repetitive sudoku-like puzzles, that you'll be begging to skip and the main antagonist is the same bunch of angry, misguided aliens that we already got to defeat in a 1000 different games.

I don't know what's going on in that company, but there's serious management issues here and I don't think they'll be able to recover from this disaster. Oh well, goodbye Bio, you made some of the best games in the world, and now it's time to wrap it up.

    - The game has extremely fun combat and exploration is done really well.
    - As far as the animations go They are about as good as I would expect from a Mass Effect game, as none of the games have been cutting edge in the animation or graphics department.
    - The story is good so far though I'm only eight hours in at the time of writing, and I haven't experienced any sjw politics that a lot of people are complaining about in those eight hours so suffice to say that they aren't prevalent in the game.
    - The leveling is about the same as ME3 but with ever skill tree open to you

All in all the game isn't on the same level as the original trilogy, but rarely are these type of games. It seems to suffer from typical day 1 issues combined with BioWare's meh faces, and if you're looking for the shiniest most polished game then this is not the game for you. If you looking for a return to old school ME then this probably isn't for you. But, if you're looking for a fun game that you can explore and enjoy then this is a game worth getting.

•The Character Creator is subpar. I can easily spend two (or more) hours creating my custom character in the beginning of an awesome AAA title. One of my MOST favorite parts of a game and really helps get me immersed and truly invested in my story. I was robbed of this. : /

•Story and dialog choices seem... stale. Again, really missing a natural flair, organic humor and playful sexual energy that comes from healthy human exchanges.

All in all, have been a major fan of the ME series since ME1 but this installment seems as though Bioware has stopped catering to it's original fan base and has instead joined the ranks of the falling "preachy" element that's not really concerned about just making something fun and sexy people (YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE) can enjoy but forcing you to be "liberal". -This game falls flat.

But I guess the only way to have them understand, (CATER TO YOUR FANBASE, not agendas) is in their wallets. -They might want to prepare to be schooled then.

But let me just point out some of biggest problem of this game:

    - The writing in this game is really not that good. Some times it's cheesy, childish and awful. Most of the time... It's mediocre...

    - The voice actor are ok but it feels like they recorded their line out of context. Which makes them sound robotic, emotionless at times.

    - Lots of side quests. Most of them are tidious... grindy... and booring. Just like DA Inquistion.

    - The saving system is retarded.

Of course the story has many stock phrases, banalities, copy-pastes from sci-fy movies and books. But you can live in this Universe filled with bunch of interesting details. You can feel inside this story. It took 2 hours to me to became a part of the Mass Effect Universe and the next 130 hours were beautiful.
I waited for the game, I watched the trailers. I read everything concerning MEA. And today I am disappointed.
The plot is flat, details are useless, animation is ugly, dialogs are stupid - Bioware have managed to put all my fears together in one game. I cannot see the characters around me because they're not people but ugly plastic dolls. How am I supposed to be inside the story? I just had to took away 5 points because of the horrendous animations in dialogue(and other bugs), the eyes are just so lifeless it's scary. lip syncing is nonexistent and there are no shadows on faces. But the rest of the game looks GREAT, kudos to the Frostbite engine. The environment, armor, weapons and other alien races are just spot on ! ( just some weird texture popping and low draw distance when driving)

    Sound : 7/10
I am not a music connoisseur but from what I heard so far in this game there isn't a memorable score expect from when you are on the galaxy map, the calm music is just so relaxing I had to mention it. Guns sound loud and have a great kick to them, so does melee attacks and ambient music. Voice acting isn't terrible but isn't great either some lines are just so damn cringy I had to look away.

    Gameplay : 8/10
This is where the game truly shines. The gameplay is really good and far better than previous Mass Effect games. You are not bound to a single class and can choose to upgrade a way array of powers from simple ones like tossing grenades to sick ones like freezing your enemy before making him explode with a biotic lance. The cover system works well but isn't very intuitive, Ryder automatically snaps onto cover if his weapon is drawn behind a structure. You can now jump evade and teleport adding some verticality to the combat. Sadly ordering your teammates in combat is very basic but still work very well since the IA friendly or not is not stupid.
On the other hand this is still an RPG which means base building and other goodies. With your scanning tool you can now earn research point to craft some new items, Your duty as pathfinder means that you are responsible of finding new world for your colony to settle in. By progressing in the game you will make the hostile planets somewhat viable allowing your fellow colonists to seize the planet ! You can also wake up citizen from cryo sleep and build up the nexus. It really is something that you need to experience for yourself to truly understand it. You really feel like you are part of something greater.

Conclusion : This game does not deserve all the hate that it gets because despite the bad graphics at some points the core of the game is really good and will entertain you for a certain amount of time. You know what they say: don't judge a book by it's cover. This game is a Buy if you like RPGs and space operas.

It is a different game than ME1-ME3. This one heralds more back to ME1 with a slower and more exploration based premise. Fortunately, the combat mechanics are much more polished this time around, and it finds a good balance between RPG and 3rd person cover based shooter.

The quests are varied, some good and interesting, others not so much. But the total package is interesting and will keep you occupied. I think that EA/Bioware did themselves a disservice by having a 10 hour preview period and not allowing full reviews out ahead of this. I also think that they "miffed" the mainstream game reviewers by keeping the game mostly under wraps for its development. It is an industry, they make money when there is a stream of disclosure about new games - EA/Bioware did not participate. Thus, some of the "hate" is likely because of that. It is a business after all and never underestimate self-interest. That said, EA/Bioware could have handled the release much better.

There is a lot to do and discover here. If you enjoy exploration and discovery, with a solid combat system and strong RPG elements, you will like this game. The story is more Star Trek (original), than Star Wars (or ME2 and ME3); it is also a bit cliched. The characters are not as strong as ME2 but similar to ME1/ME3.

In terms of criticism, and some of the comments in the other reviews are well deserved - it does have some poor facial animations, some of the dialog is poorly written and flatly stated, and there are bugs. It is disappointing that so many game studios have taken to releasing games in a Beta state. I have not personally encountered any game-breaking bugs; simply breaking the immersion now and then.

In summary, 8/10 - not a GOTY contender - but if you want a good sci-fi exploration experience with good RPG elements and a solid combat experience, it is worth a look. If budget conscious, I would wait until a 25% or more discounted sale.

Expectations were high.

The 0-10 scale is obviously flawed. But I cannot bring myself to review this game anything lower than a 6. It has its problems, but within the American grading system, 0-5 signifies a failing (non)effort. Despite some noticeable bugs, I did not encounter any game-breaking ones (your mileage may vary). ME: A was rushed, but it is not a literally broken game.

This is not high praise. In fact, ME: A is a bad game, and if you value your time, you should not play it. When I play an RPG, first and foremost I expect some engagement with the story and the characters. An RPG is not only about its systems; its about role-playing within the given constraints of the game. And I cannot role-play with ME: A’s clichéd, uninteresting plot and terrible, forgettable cast. Even if you look over the problems with animation (it’s truly horrible, watch on Youtube for entertainment) and voice-work (the talent were phoning it in); the writing itself is untenable. There is no forward momentum. The gameplay systems function in a workmanship manner independent of context: combat is fine, the quest system sets up an addictive gameplay loop. But there is no soul to the game that makes you want to engage with these systems. And that is ME: A’s major sin.

Additionally, another thing that's a big turnoff is that there is no character creation option for Caucasian skin. I thought this may have been by mistake, but apparently the game's devs actually left this out intentionally because of political beliefs. That's right. This game allowed its creators to inject racism and politics into probably one of the most-used means of escape from the dregs of every day life by people: video games.

Back to the game, though. It's rushed, incomplete and buggy. There are a lot of side quests, but their quality is low. The content overall is just poor. Crafting is pointless, combat is over-simplified and limited, and the quality of animation is some of the worst I've seen of games in the past couple of years.

Basically, stay away from this title. It's probably just a good idea to stay away from EA in general. This isn't a "one off" for them. It's become the norm. And lastly, don't support games that knowingly and intentionally build in their real world hatred and bias into them. Seeing video games politicized is something I never expected to see.

I defend the fact that I've not finished the game by pointing out that neither have most of the 1-4 raters on here.

Now, on to the things that matter. Yes, the narrative is uneven. When it's good, it's good, when it's bad it's more mediocre than awful. Yes, the voice acting is spotty. For the most part, and for all of the main cast, it's good. For some of the side characters, it is less so. The combat is as good as it's ever been - it would be the best in the series had they not disallowed control of squadmates. The UI is abjectly terrible, and the galaxy map is overbuilt, and while pretty, makes traveling unnecessarily slow. The characters are likeable, though none quite reach the original trilogy for memorability. Overall, it's a solid but flawed experience. There's potential here, but even when the game fails to reach it, the sky is not falling like some of the folks here would suggest.

And to the reviewer who said the game is locked at 30FPS - I recommend you check your hardware, because I'm running it 60+ on ultra.

I've enjoyed my first 8 hours despite a few things here and there that detracted from the experience.

Many of the user reviewers here have made good points, but giving this game a 0 or a 1 is a bit ridiculous.

    This deserves no Mass Affection.

    I keep it short:

ME1, ME2, ME3 are about story, characters, species and relations between the latter two.

ME Andromeda tries to be the same, but it also includes new gameplay layers due to its focus on an outdated openworld concept. The result: It fails at both ME's core elements (see above) and at being a great openworld game.

    Sad, but true.

They have a lot of balls to release something like this after the stunt they pulled with ME 3.
Did they progressively delude themselves to think it would be fine regardless of how low the quality of product is? Its as if they were sheltered people that have never played any other decent game to be able to make a comparison and see just how ridiculous everything turned out to be.

These 0s and 1s are a travesty to a user score. Yes it has flaws but it has way more pluses. Great gameplay, great exploration, beautiful landscapes, love the change in focus from Alien attacks to exploration for setting up a new civilization. LOVE it!

The game does exactly what the first ME game did for me: give me a sense of curiosity and desire to keep exploring as much as possible. I do think they could have done a few things better in the technical department, but I definitely like what they did to bring back the series.

I hope they take the criticisms and improve on them. If they don't, I'll have an issue. But for right now I am

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really wanted to like this game... And I was looking forward to it for a long long time.

But the same issues that were brought out when the first trailer came out (Facial animations), the ones we were told would be fixed, are still there, and are even worse than I expected. It is downright immersion breaking, because of flat lifeless expressions, characters that sound emotionless, writing that is Below average at best, and often atrocious. The open world of this game feels similar to DAI and Ubisoft games, that have you running around gathering stuff, and doing other boring activities that feel like a chore rather than being fun.

Gone is the sense of control you felt over your actions, as the Paragon/Renegade option has been replaced for being too binary, and instead replaced with a bunch of options that are meant to convey your tone, but end up saying the same thing. You hardly have any control over your characters actions. No matter what you do, you are always going to be the good guy. The ability to be rude, which was an integral part of what made mass effect so fun, is gone. You want to play as a dick? No, you are not allowed.

Your companions are forgettable for the most part, with perhaps two exceptions, and one of them being memorable in a bad way. Peebee is perhaps the most irritating and badly written character I have ever seen in a game. All the characters lack any sort of seriousness despite the danger around them, and the conversation sounds like some sort of disney channel show set in high school. She just spouts off stupid one liners and bad jokes, and in place of having a binary option of paragon and renegade which influences how characters react towards you, you are instead given a binary option between professional and casual that determines how peebee reacts towards you. I found myself wishing I could somehow get her killed or kick her off the ship after the first mission with her, as I found her so irritating and cliche.

The characters that have human faces are especially bad, as they look like they have been clubbed in the face as babies, and have a dazed expression that is interrupted only by their eyes making odd and rapid movements in all directions. Their faces are almost always fixed in one position, and the lip syncing is so awful it makes you cringe.

The combat is however, pretty good. At least at first. It also has some big flaws, mainly glitches that leave you stuck floating along slowly when you land after using your jump jet, or your character unable to find a position behind cover because he slides along another feet after you take your finger off the move key. For some reason the developers have chosen to remove the ability to control your teamates beyond telling them where to go.. You cannot use their abilities for combo detonations anymore, and you yourself are limited to three hotkeys, which makes having more than three abilities in a profile somewhat pointless.

The story is very dull, and lacks any of the seriousness and feeling of wonder that I loved about all the previous games. This is a surprising thing to realize when there was so much potential here in this setting. Instead this new galaxy you are thrust into is almost identical to the one you left, with the reapers replaced by another similar species, and a one dimensional evil species that you end up battling for most of the game. You find yourself trudging from planet to planet, fixing the weather by doing sudoku puzzles and a bunch of irritating fetch quests.

I never expected this game to be so poor, but it is. I found myself struggling to play it after a certain point, and was so bored I went back to playing ME 1. I reccomend waiting till this game is patched and the price goes down to match its quality, which is to say when it is around 10 to 20 USD. If you are a fan of the previous games, prepare for disappointment.

Mass Effect: Andromeda seems to be an ambitious project by a young and new branch of the Bioware (EA) studio. I recently got into the ten hour trial, and my impressions are largely positive, but with a very few negative impressions mixed inbetween.

Combat: Combat seems to be one of the strengths of this game. While I can see how some people take issues with the interface, which is unresponsive at times, the new fast-paced action combat is a welcome addition to the franchise. The new "active" biotic system feels much more alive and active than the old "wizard" system of tossing two powers out for maximum damage.

Characters: This is probably as "Mass Effect" as it gets. You will have some characters that you tremendously enjoy spending time with, and you will find characters that are...blunt. Subjectively, I very much enjoyed spending time with Vetra and Peebee, but I disliked Liam. It's very much like squads from the previous games: You will love some, you will hate some. There's nothing that sticks out sore, but nothing that sticks out perfect either. "Solid" is the descriptive term to go with.

Story: I will refrain from judging the story until I have completely finished it. The beginning was fun and entertaining, but I'm not about to judge a book by it's first cover.

Exploration: Exploration is similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you like the (semi) open world setting of that game, you will most likely also enjoy spending some hours in Andromeda. The game offers side-quests and collectibles, as well as vast terrains that you can explore with the new "Nomad" - a vehicle similar to the Mako in Mass Effect 1. Except, obviously, it doesn't play like a piece of rubber all the time.

One of the negative aspects is probably the facial animations. While not as bad as some people would suggest, you can see some missing textures and details throughout the game. This is something that has to be fixed by post-release patches to receive a higher score. I would not perceive this as too annoying, but Andromeda is a Bioware RPG. This makes it necessary to look at character's faces for prolongued periods of time. In a game that relies on conversations, having these weird animations can be distracting.

Considering all the small details and previous games, I can see this as an ambitious first attempt at bringing the franchise forward. However, this is clearly only a first attempt, seeing that the game suffers from very minor but patchable bugs and glitches. It really needs some post-release work, but it isn't beyond salvageable. I'd consider it an average game as it is right now, but might change my mind depending on what's to come in a few months.

The multiplayer is/was fun sure, but the single-player is FAR more like dragon age inq in the terms of open world and story, and that kind of story telling is fine, but having to gather 5k resources ON FOOT is not my thing and then having a finite amount of them so you can't craft all the things or experiment without TONS of farming. I did not get through the 2nd mission at nearly 7 hours into the story!

That is what made me quit playing the dragon age INQ, it just kept GOING with VERY little story progression, and if you did a side mission/quest it would rope you into side dungeons/events you COULD NOT LEAVE without spending another hour or something in them. Sure ME1-2-3 did that kind of thing, but it was FAR more linear with FAR more choices and impacts while this style of open world only results in a FEW choices mattering and any of those choices only effect what a few chars say to you not their entire character. IE in ME1-2-3 and dragon age 1-2 you could make someone hate you or disrespect them and it would effect their combat skills or unlock/lock skills, in this, just, nothing, they change a few key words of dialog.

They also severally limited gameplay in terms of combat this time. No letting you use health-kits like in ME1-2-3, having to find ammo from crates in preset spots with only 4 ammo reloads, each gun takes up a refill so if you restock 2 guns with ammo 2 of the 4 refills are used, instead of dropped ammo from enemies.

Limited use of abilities by saying it uses a power cell, weapons start out SUPER weak unless you have difficulty set down, you can't rez a teammate from a distance because you have to run up to them out of cover and hold to rez, your limited to ONLY 3 ABILITIES unless you hot-swap to another PRESET set of abilities which then sets those new abilities on a COOL-DOWN when swapped to even if your abilities were fully ready. IE see dropship dropping tons of grunts, swap to AOE power set as you enter combat, OOOPS to bad, you now have to wait 30-40 seconds to use your abilities now....

And don't get me started on the animations. I just replayed through the series and watched others stream it on twitch A LOT recently. The fact they could not import/adapt even just the facial motions etc from the first 3 games is VERY sad. I mean wasn't Dragon Age INQ using the same engine? Could they not use the same assets/code for facial animations? Those were at-least far better and it was in the same engine with likely only SOME code needing to be redone to get it to fit on the models right.

Overall I am giving it a lower score of 5 until the issues are fixed. As which point I will redo my review.

That's not to say it's without its issues, but like several other titles, players nit pick on certain things, IE a few animation issues, post it on the internet, and then it snowballs. Yes... it's a little distracting. But there are so few instances which relate to certain characters, it's just not game breaking.

Another common complaint is the writing/commentary from characters. This is one of my pet peaves- corny lines- but again it is not so bad that the game is horrible. In fact, I would say it's very similar from the ME trilogy. If you could handle it then, you can handle it now. It does remind me of some corny Netflix cartoons with really bad scripts.

Combat- I love it. Jump, dodge, combos, etc. Take cover, duke it out, you know the drill. There are a variety of new methods with profiles instead of classes, and it opens up a lot of different combat styles. It's definitely fun.

Graphics- The game looks beautiful. It's not the best out there, but everything from landscapes to the star system/galaxy map is impressive. Performance is alright- playing on an i5 6600k OC'd to 4.5 Ghz with a 1060 6GB, 16 GB Ram, and SSD. I play on mostly high settings with the latest drivers. It seems to float between 50 to 78 FPS, usually dipping during conversations on ships or in buildings for some reason. But it's definitely playable.

I'm not too impressed with this game engine. I had a similar complaint with DA:I, which was a horrible game. And thank god I can say there are very few similarities. But one similarity is that this is an "open world." No. This is a fake open world, where canyons, rocks, hills, etc. limit a lot of where you can go. It's basically corridors made to look like its open world. After having come from the new Ghost Recon game, it's a joke hearing EA call this "Open World."

The story is great. From beginning up to where I'm at, I am really drawn in to find out what happens next. Side mission stories aren't too bad, either. They don't feel like the horrible fetch quests of DA:I. They are somewhat interesting, and usually tie in with the main story.

Bottom line: It's Mass Effect. Bioware didn't do much to break from the mold. There's not a whole lot of new here, and if you had high expectations, thinking this would be the best game ever, you will probably be disappointed. If you like all the Mass effect games and accept them for what they are, you will love Mass Effect Andromeda.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to be fair, there were some well done portions of this game, but I cannot, in good conscience give it a good score. I can sum it up in one word. Derivative.

    Spoilers:

To start with, we have to accept a huge amount of retcon in this game. A human lead initiative to go to another Galaxy started barely a decade after the first contact war? This would be like Columbus saying, "I've found a new land, now I'm going to go to Mars." I won't bother getting into all that, because retcon aside, the game still stinks.

As everyone has rightly pointed out, the animations and character textures are sub par. Double Bogey sub-par. So, strike one. The dialog is juvenile. It just reeks of dialog of that was quickly written out and never spoken aloud and refined to see if this is how intelligent beings speak to each other. Strike 2. The characters are awful, and one dimensional cutouts. They each have "their" role to the game and they don't stray from it. And more often than not, they are annoying, especially the support crew members. Strike 3.

While the environments are beautiful, and a lot of work went into the aesthetics of the planets, it can only do so much to distract you from the poor story and the hackneyed characters. New batter, strike 1. The story is, as I said, derivative. The original story may have been a Lovecraft esque Eldritch horror in which the hero almost literally punches Cthulhu, but its execution was so good you barely noticed. But at last ME1 was different. ME:A is an attempt to reboot the franchise away from the large looming shadow of Commander Shepard, and they don't succeed. You can go to another galaxy, but you'll never be better than Commander Shepard. Strike 2 again. So, lastly, the final out, is the Ryder twins. They exude zero credibility, and zero gravitas. Alec Ryder, for his very short existence, could have been a great character, but's like a Green Beret dies and his teenage son and daughter join the squad. They tell me with their badly animated mouths that they received training, but they act like they are in the cast of some prime drama for women.

Sorry, but this feels like a poorly executed attempt to overwrite the franchise, and it fell flat on its face in my opinion.
