I thought it was pretty fun. Not great, but a fun time. Builds up some intrigue in the characters and lore, leading into the potential sequels which is what Bioware have always excelled at in the past.

Combat is fluid and fun. Massive improvement over the trilogy.

Game just needs more focus in the right places and some kinks to get ironed out. It'll never live up to the originals, but it does feel somewhat rushed and sloppy and needs more time to be fixed. Here's to hoping Andromeda 2 learns from the mistakes this game made.

It took time for me to get into the swing of this game and ultimately classify it as a welcome and natural continuation of the Mass Effect series for a few reasons. The first reason: the character models are flat out ugly. They quite frankly feel unfinished. It feels like they used Dragon Age: Inquisition’s smooth and colorful models and tried to make them more realistic by adding extra texture and detail to the faces. Paired with the unnatural facial animations, and you are left with this strange midpoint between cartoony and realistic that is strange. When your character first jolts on screen, it is a bit shocking. You are then immediately greeted by more characters, and they look no better. I’ll have to look back, but I remember the models in even Mass Effects 3 looking better.

Adding to the rough start is the fact that it gets off to a very in my opinion rushed start. While I normally would praise a game for jumping right into the action and feel that more games should do it, Mass Effect is a series that values you taking your time. To boot, this game features a whole new story in a whole new galaxy with a whole new cast of characters. I would have preferred it if the game let you wake up, walk around a bit and learn who everyone was and heck, who YOU are. Instead, you wake up, you are engaged with dialogue, and suddenly, you are put to work. It’s one of the few times I was aching for MORE exposition. Between the rushed intro and the ugly characters, I wouldn’t blame most people from being turned off from the get go. It isn’t until you are off the opening location (an ark named Hyperion, one of several arks designed to aid the Andromeda Initiative) that you can breathe and experience what this game really offers the Mass Effect universe. And that “something” is great.

    Freedom.

I’ve often lamented the Mass Effect series for going in the wrong direction compared to where I thought it should go. I was disappointed that the games seemed to favor increased linearity over increased exploration, as I feel that a game that involves exploring space and building alliances lends itself to a more open world form of gameplay. Instead, Mass Effect 2 featured smaller explorable hubs, including the comparatively tiny Citadel. And then Mass Effect 3 increased the size of the Citadel while offering less compelling additional areas. Since then, open world games have become an increasingly sexy genre in the gaming world, and while this leads to a lot of games that are tiring because they are poorly done open worlds with nothing more than repetitive busy work to fill the map or worse, gigantic maps with nothing to do in them (No Man’s Sky), I always thought Mass Effect was a perfect candidate for a more open experience.

So when you arrive on your first mission you get a slice of the more open experience that will only become more open as the chains come off and you are left to your own devices.

Here is also when you will experience your first combat situations, and man. The combat is great. The combat seems to be a controversial subject to some people as the skill choices have become more streamlined and any limitations on weapon choice or play style based on class have been removed. The dirty word “casualization” will be thrown around plenty here, but more streamlined and enjoyable to play while still offering variety is not a bad thing. To boot skill selection is still up to the player and those choices will have a very material effect on how the game is played, making it no less of an RPG than previous iterations. Do you want to go all biotic to manipulate foes and hit them with devastating combinations? Do you want to go all tech? Do you want to go all pure combat? Do you want a combination? It’s up to you.

Further improving the combat is the movement, which was always an annoyance in the Mass Effect series. Before, Mass Effect was largely a pure cover shooter with an often-tricky camera and stoic movement. But now movement is a lot more flowing, making it much more fast-paced and fun. Cover now happens automatically when you move toward a wall with a weapon drawn and getting out of cover is as easy as just moving, making you feel much less stuck to walls. Dashing and the jetpack are great and make for a more quick and verticle experience.Maybe from the outside these changes seem radical, but when you play the game, the changes are nothing but a natural and welcome evolution to the Mass Effect formula.

After this tutorial mission the game begins to take shape. You now have an idea of who you are, what your mission is and your role in the game to come. You will soon be on your first proper planet complete with several side quests, ready to experience the truly great experience before you. If you try to get past the rocky start, you won’t regret it.

Also it runs really well on PC.

    8/10, very good

Despite the glamorous appearance, inside is hidden all the same Mass Effect, just with the following fashion and trends. The game has technical problems, but it's quite accurate Mass Effect, the game is not revolutionary but it's very good!

At its 8 (with a stretch of course), she deserved, but only with the stretch set as a fan of the series.

Mass Effect: Andromeda seems to be an ambitious project by a young and new branch of the Bioware (EA) studio. I recently got into the ten hour trial, and my impressions are largely positive, but with a very few negative impressions mixed inbetween.

Combat: Combat seems to be one of the strengths of this game. While I can see how some people take issues with the interface, which is unresponsive at times, the new fast-paced action combat is a welcome addition to the franchise. The new "active" biotic system feels much more alive and active than the old "wizard" system of tossing two powers out for maximum damage.

Characters: This is probably as "Mass Effect" as it gets. You will have some characters that you tremendously enjoy spending time with, and you will find characters that are...blunt. Subjectively, I very much enjoyed spending time with Vetra and Peebee, but I disliked Liam. It's very much like squads from the previous games: You will love some, you will hate some. There's nothing that sticks out sore, but nothing that sticks out perfect either. "Solid" is the descriptive term to go with.

Story: I will refrain from judging the story until I have completely finished it. The beginning was fun and entertaining, but I'm not about to judge a book by it's first cover.

Exploration: Exploration is similar to Dragon Age: Inquisition. If you like the (semi) open world setting of that game, you will most likely also enjoy spending some hours in Andromeda. The game offers side-quests and collectibles, as well as vast terrains that you can explore with the new "Nomad" - a vehicle similar to the Mako in Mass Effect 1. Except, obviously, it doesn't play like a piece of rubber all the time.

One of the negative aspects is probably the facial animations. While not as bad as some people would suggest, you can see some missing textures and details throughout the game. This is something that has to be fixed by post-release patches to receive a higher score. I would not perceive this as too annoying, but Andromeda is a Bioware RPG. This makes it necessary to look at character's faces for prolongued periods of time. In a game that relies on conversations, having these weird animations can be distracting.

Considering all the small details and previous games, I can see this as an ambitious first attempt at bringing the franchise forward. However, this is clearly only a first attempt, seeing that the game suffers from very minor but patchable bugs and glitches. It really needs some post-release work, but it isn't beyond salvageable. I'd consider it an average game as it is right now, but might change my mind depending on what's to come in a few months.

Game control and combat is familiar, key bindings match the first three games with a few extra features. The jump pack and scanner are cool. One hour in and you definitely feel the strong influence of exploration being the center point of the game, maps are not linear. I found the design of the first world to be a bit to busy for my taste, less could have been more here. After three hours I was enjoying the game play and the story started to improve. The game is not an ME3 sequel, it is a complete resign and feels like it in just about every way. I found the character dialog improved and more realistic than the paragon/renegade choices. Graphics wise I'm playing dual 1080's at 5960x1080 (perfect out of the box) and could only run High setting with FXAA and no AO, vsync enabled, to maintain 60fps. Temporal AA looked great but pushed frame rate down to 50-55fps. Expand

I defend the fact that I've not finished the game by pointing out that neither have most of the 1-4 raters on here.

Now, on to the things that matter. Yes, the narrative is uneven. When it's good, it's good, when it's bad it's more mediocre than awful. Yes, the voice acting is spotty. For the most part, and for all of the main cast, it's good. For some of the side characters, it is less so. The combat is as good as it's ever been - it would be the best in the series had they not disallowed control of squadmates. The UI is abjectly terrible, and the galaxy map is overbuilt, and while pretty, makes traveling unnecessarily slow. The characters are likeable, though none quite reach the original trilogy for memorability. Overall, it's a solid but flawed experience. There's potential here, but even when the game fails to reach it, the sky is not falling like some of the folks here would suggest.

And to the reviewer who said the game is locked at 30FPS - I recommend you check your hardware, because I'm running it 60+ on ultra.

The game overall though is fantastic, for the first time in any RPG game I've played (and I have played many), I don't feel like a messenger boy, I feel like I am a leader that is actually trying to search for the golden world for us survivors to thrive on. My experience with this game has been pretty much what I would expect from Bioware and a AAA title. I typically never enter a game expecting a GOTY experience, so perhaps I do set the bar low in most cases. I will add that at no point while playing this game did I feel that this game deserved a score lower than a 6.0. People are certainly entitled to their opinions and I respect the fact that this game is going to be one of those that isn't for everyone, but the 0s, 1s, 2s and 3s? Pure bandwagoning from the gaming hipsters, probably a lot of trolling as well. I bet most of those reviewers didn't even buy the game. Case in point: the animations. Much ado about nothing. Some critic before release decides to harp on a couple of funny looking facial expressions and then the entire internet can't stop talking about it. Where was this level of criticism for Fallout 4? How about DA: I? Plenty of games get by with sub-par to downright crappy animations. Have games like the Witcher 3 spoiled us on such things? Whatever the case, the facial animations aren't that bad and the new patch has shown improvements in the worst of them (i.e. Addison, the tired face lady). If they had to pick between facial animations and the rest of the graphics I'm glad the chose the latter. This game is gorgeous on high settings on pc.

Now for the bugs. This game has them, hell most games do these days. When was the last time you bought a console game and didn't have to download a > 1 GB day-0 patch? Bugs happen. Blame the publisher and their aggressive dates over the dev studio. At any rate I have never encountered anything game breaking and the latest patch seemed to squash some of the immersion-breaking ones during the cutscenes on the Tempest, which were the only truly annoying bugs for me.

So now for the actual gameplay. The combat system is probably the most improved part of the game. It just feels very fluid and when you play on a higher difficulty it can present a fun challenge. My biggest gripes about it are that they didn't allow for much companion customization this time around. You can mess with their limited skill tree but that's about it. However they make up for it through main character customization. With profiles you can spec into any/all of the talents you want. Get tired of playing a soldier? It's ok, you can switch to a biotic. No need to start the game over from scratch.

Overall the story and characters are good, sometimes great, but they never truly reach that level where I felt fully invested. I feel like the open world part of the game is the chief culprit here. While driving around and exploring planets in the Nomad is fun, it creates a break in the story that found me many times wondering what exactly it was that I originally came to this planet to do in the first place. In short, ME: A suffers from the same problems that plague most open world games which begs the question on a game series that found its success in the narrative: was making it open world really necessary? This is the same problem I had with DA: I. Just because you can make something open world doesn't mean you should.

All in all I found my experience in Andromeda to be fun and fairly rewarding. The story, while it never really reaches that epic scale from the original trilogy, it certainly delivers some good moments and successfully lays the ground work for a new series in the Andromeda Galaxy. Worth a buy IMO.

The gameplay is amazing, the characters are lovable (or intentionally hate-able) from an early point and the world is so well designed to give you the perfect feeling of nostalgic familiarity while still making everything new. The theme of the game is so well portrayed by the plot as there is always a feeling of mystery and an entity that is much bigger than yourself which can't help but invoke a need to explore and learn.

The only flaw in the game would be the animations, they are not up to modern standards. This said, however, they simply do not detract from the immense enjoyment that this game offers. As of yet I have still not encountered any bugs on my PC version, and thus cannot comment about that.

In conclusion, I cannot understand the gap in experiences that people are having with this title. It is thoroughly invoking and enjoyable, and certainly does not warrant the immense hatred it is receiving. The hate seems like a clear example of media hysteria to jump on the popular 'meme' for the day just so that you feel there are people out there who agree with you.

Remember how in the first Mass Effect you could roam around planets in a vehicle, well that's back and is a major part of the game, each planet you explore seems massive and is full of quests and things to shoot at. The scanning of planets and anomalies is also there and that's where my biggest gripe with the game lies, you cannot skip the animation of going from one area to another when moving around Andromeda, not the worst thing in the world. The bottom line is, if you like scifi and if you enjoyed the original Mass Effect then you will like MEA, ignore the people hating on this game, they don't actually know what they like. Expand

I can't see the reason behind all the negative reviews, I enjoy the game, very much.
Yes, it is buggy and, yes, the facial animations are weird, to say at least, but besides that...I don't feel that the game is so bad as others make it be. I'm certain, that those who gave the bad reviews expected something, I don't know, better than the original trilogy ? If so, what the hell did you

I like the game, and yes, I had few buggy moments, like, enemies fell through the ground in Voeld and I had to restart the game, and, got I stuck between two crates on Eos, and that's it, so far...31 hours in. The story and characters, are good, their stories are interesting, haven't done all of them, I did at least three or four.

This game rides the coattails of quite possibly the most popular sci-fi game franchise of all time. In so doing, it starts us off from the very beginning of a story that has basically no connection to the story most of us love - just as Mass Effect did some 10 years ago'ish when the series first started. Not to say that is the only reason this game isn't as good, but that connection is a large component in its underachieving.

After playing about 70 hours of SP on insanity, I can say that the game is actually pretty damn fun. The combat is so much better than the other MEs. There are some unfortunate bugs, and that sucks, but there are some awesome fighting techniques. People seem to be b*tching about the animations, haven't seen anything out of the ordinary for ME. Loving the story as it has finally started to get going and my Ryder is a f*cking wrecking ball now.

+ Combat is awesome (takes a while to level up and truly take advantage of the combat system)
    + Graphics
+- Galaxy Map Upgrade (This can get a bit annoying after it loses its luster)
    + Story
    + Open world
    + Tons to do

    - There are bugs (Frostbite I'm looking at you)
    - Ancillary characters are odd looking (and you keep seeing them over, over and over again)
    - Scanning can get a bit tedious
    - Can't skip certain cutscenes meant to hide loading (SSD, enjoy the wait)
    - Characters say the same comments and often comment on things out of order. Blame this on poor programming/scripting. (This happens A LOT. Quite disappointing they couldn't catch these in QA)
    - There are some bugs that completely break Missions
    - BW should have sprung on a video tutorial series for all the new stuff. AVP, R&D and all the other stuff they added. The game has a ton of depth, but I got very little introduction into the mechanics and was thrown into it.

0 or 1 ratings, what the f___? I wish that Origin would suck it up and put a rating system like Steam so only people who own the game could rate it. Because Metacritic is shi*. Would help avoid these toxic, copy and paste posts on here. This is the exact reason Steam dropped Metacritic from their service. *He says as he posts on Metacritic. Blow me.

    So the Bad stuff first:

    - The facial animations, they aren't top notch, I didn't find them to be off putting but some people will
-Some of the voice acting isn't great, not so much the one on one conversation, but with multiple characters in a dialogue it can be a bit disjointed
-Some of the side quests can feel a bit MMOish
-It has quite a slow start, this is something that I don't think has done it any favors with the early access options, play a few hours and see what you think. It's slow, so I think that will go against it in that format and I have seen a fair few reviews here of people deciding not to buy it from that and review it from those few hours. In terms of this game you need to play through that to get to the gold.
-The inventory system is a bit clunky

    The Good:

-The environments are beautiful, with a good range and if you want to explore you will be rewarded for that
-Combat is interesting and doesn't feel like a speed bump
-The story is good, and has its own feel, note the above that it does take a while to get into it. Once you are in it though you have the choices of where to go and what to focus on.
-More then black and white. Some people are going to see this as a downside, there are more options than paragon and renegade, leaving room to be more of a nuanced hero.
-The personal character interactions are great
-Most of the side quests are good
-A similar but different focus to saving the whole universe and it all feeling very urgent

Overall I like if not love this game.

Buy it, play past the first 5 hours and hopefully you will feel the same as well.

Sadly there are some aspects that fell short. Do I even need to talk about the animations? This game had 5 years of development time and they can't get them right?
The characters don't grow to you as much as in the OT, some still shine though (Peebee and Drack are adorable).

There's less emphasizing on the story, it's not bad but Mass Effect is now more about gameplay than story. Not necessarily a bad thing but unusual. A good mix would have been great.

Still, the sheer amount of hate this game is getting is just undeserved as people are now holding off from buying it just because of the animations. If you actually play the game, it's huge. There's so much more that lets you forget about its flaws at most times.

The worlds are gorgeous and fun to explore because of the Nomad which has surprisingly amazing driving physics! (Never thought that would happen with Mako 2.0)

I would recommend this game to anyone. You can still refund it. Trust me, it's worth it.

It is very similar to Mass Effect 1 in both its positives and negatives (Which is actually my favorite of the series despite the bad combat, inventory handling, and the awful planet exploration - the story made up for all of it). Yes it does have fetch quests and lots of random meaningless side quests... but so did every other mass effect and Knights of the old republic. And you know what? If you like doing those kinds of things they are fun - but you don't have to do them. It also feels the most like playing a Star Trek game than anything I have played in recent years.

Andromeda copies the gameplay of Dragon Age Inquisition with more streamlines main missions and well your spaceship. I loved Inquisition and i love the exploration, discoveries and the overall gameworld of Andromeda. i always wanted to just explore the Mass Effect Universe, see some settlements, cities and just get immersed in that game world.
In my opinion Andromeda really delivers that.

    Positive:

In terms of graphics, sounds, animations and gameplay I am very happy and satisfied.
I don't really understand critics saying, the quests are too MMO. Yes it's not a unique gameplay, but it works and interestingly enough games with pretty much the same gameplay are upvoted.

Combat is really fun and with different combos you can customize your battle strategies.
Driving the Nomad is awesome and compared to the Mako they figured out driving mechanics.

    Negatives:

Character Editor is again really bad and the custom Ryders are the best looking.
I'd love to have more squadmates, more customization options for said squadmates and more interaction with them.

None of these issues are unexpected in BioWare games.

That said, I've found the game to be on the whole, immersive. The Nomad is everything we ever wanted the Mako to be. Exploring the vast and often stunning maps is much more rewarding than it ever was in Mass Effect 1. The combat system has been revitalized with the advent of jump jets and an automatic cover system. Multiplayer is once again challenging and surprisingly replayable.

I do wish there was an automatic setting for which shoulder the camera is on, though. And a more streamlined inventory/crafting system.

Things move and you get what the expression is supposed to be, but it rarely looks natural or appealing. Similar animation problems exist with character movement, and there are occasional graphical glitches that are annoying. The other thing I've found most annoying so far is the repetitive nature of the fights. The enemies have so far been largely the same, and I find myself using the same tactics over and over again without feeling like there's much point to the fighting.

That said, I found the concept behind this game to be pretty compelling. It's executed with moderate success. The mystery of the scourge is fascinating enough to keep me going, and once the game opens up to let you explore the massive areas, it can feel really satisfying. As ugly as the characters can be, I've found many of the landscapes to be simply beautiful. I like the new ships. I like about as many companion/NPC characters as I liked in ME3 (about half of them).

I haven't even attempted the multiplayer at this point, so I'm not considering that for my score.

Bottom line is that this isn't the masterpiece that was ME2, and it lacks the sense of urgency (and the benefit of buildup) that supported ME3 so well. The game has some big flaws. That said, it's still worth playing if you enjoy science fiction and ideas of space exploration. I also think the majority of people giving this a "0" or "1" aren't giving the game a fair shake.

Dating: If you’re male and heterosexual , you probably won't get an interesting person to date in this one. (Your choices are hyper teenage girl with bonding issues, Lady by the book and “My Sister is more important than my own character”) It's pretty much EXACTLY like Dragon Age Inquisition. It seems Bioware really doesn't know how to make women interesting lately. (Thesis: To many gay writers? ) And as they’re not really pretty either, the human aspect of reproduction kicks in: You friendzone them all.
Bugs: Soooo many glitches. Mostly funny, rarely game breaking. But there are some annoying ones. Maybe wait on some patches?

    THE GOOD:
Characters: The characters do actually grow on you (Friends, yay!)
Story: The story and decisions can be really hard. Some are a little forced but they made me stop and think about it. It seems they focused on long term problems that you create in the next ME title. (Implied) The "ending" is really cool (I guess they really really wanted to avoid ME 3 terror) and it sets some cool mysterious things up for later games in this franchise. (No Cliff-hanger, just teasing) The bad guy is well written and acted. He’s a great motivation later in the game. And the scary face animations actually work in his favour!
Sound: The voice acting is mind blowingly good. It dips only rarely on side characters but the sheer volume needs to be mentioned and appreciated. Male Rider is really funny if you always take the funny answers. Holy **** there were some good ones in there. Some Music gets you really pumped for the action.
Exploration: There's some really cool **** to explore and to look at. I stopped several times, look at something and was all “Woah”. And then dead. Because someone shot me.

At the end, my score is mainly influenced by "how it felt" to finish the game and it left me satisfied.
It’s kind of the opposite of ME3 where the game itself had a lot satisfying moments and then the ending almost ruined it.
There's a lot of game here, not all good, but still worth your time and money.
As a last tip: Activate subtitles and just read those instead of looking at the characters.

The game provides a good experience because it puts exploration front and center, has a pretty decent story, and contains serviceable characters. I have found a few bugs (for example I get certain messages before I'm supposed to) but nothing that a game reload won't fix. The dialog is weaker than previous games but not infantile as some suggest.

I have to say that I'm amazed at the rage being vented against ME:A. Many complain of the scanning and gathering elements, but I think they actually enhance the feel of exploration. If you wanted a story of ME2 quality, I can see where you might be disappointed, but several of the highly negative reviews I've read have little in common with my experience.

The environments are unique, there is always something to do on the maps and while not Breath of the Wild size they still feel large in scale.

There are some issues, the game has some complicated menus and user interfaces making it hard to do crafting and finding certain features buried in menus. Also going from planet to planet has a super long animation of your ship going to the planet. However, while they look nice, there is no option to skip them if you don't want to see it making it quickly eat up patience. There are also some issues in the writing especially in the early hours of the game. The characters seem like they are trying too hard to be funny which comes off as incredibly unfunny, the main villain starts and stays weak throughout the game and the opening mission is full of "because the game needs to happen" moments. These problem, except for the villain, do significantly improve later into the game but it does effect those first impressionable hours.

Overall, the game gets right what it needs to get right. Your crew and the player characters development (I played as the male, can't speak for the female character) are what I expect out of Mass Effect. The gameplay and open world exploration in a game about exploring the unknown feels good. And the secondary stories are fun to experience compared to the main adventure. Hope the game has healthy post launch support and that sequels fix the technical problems faced in the game.

We've seen brexit, we've seen Trump, we've seen all kinds of mob-like witch hunts in social media. And what we see with Mass Effect Andromeda, unfortunately, follows a similar path. As opposed to the people behaving like adults who understand you that there's a lot of gray between the black and white, never mind actually thinking for themselves, we have a huge angry public roar demanding for heads on a plate. And for what? I don't think anyone even knows. It's just how the modern mind seems to work.

You got EA, a bad rep to begin with. You got a few early pre-release jokes about deliberately hand-picked wacky facial animations, and a running animation that required deliberately jerking the stick all wrong to even look like that (that trick works equally well in most other games, btw). With just that and a little bit of bad luck, this mass of an online lynch mob that just loves to hate something - anything - decided MEA was going to be its next victim. Apparently the video game world hasn't had its share of drama for a while, so someone had to play the role of the scapegoat. BioWare was the perfect victim. No real "critic" dares to go against the social media lynch mob (we've all seen what happens if you do) so the recipe was ready and the result is what you see: A bunch of reviews comparing MEA to the kinds of third rate failure games most of us have barely ever played.

It's all wrong. Transparently so. You see, here's the real deal. Here's what the game is REALLY like:

Mass Effect Andromeda is a good game, probably well in the top 10-20 list of games this year, but it's not great. It's not something you'll remember a decade from now (Yes, games can be something between perfect and sewage waste, it's amazing right?).

Visually, MEA is objectively amazingly beautiful and detailed. Its game play is genuinely extremely fun, MUCH more fun than what most games have, and works nearly perfectly for single player. It has a smooth good progression system, good music, great voice acting, and believe it or not most of the time those risky facial animations are actually good. And while it has some pretty darn annoying bugs, none of them have been game breaking or in any way actually serious. In my experience most games have more bugs than this when they come out. It's not an excuse, and they need to be fixed, because they REALLY are annoying, but there it is.

That said, it has issues. Unskippable space travel animations requiring 10-30 minutes to fly around planets clicking a button in every fourth of them that has a button worth clicking, gets old real fast. You're literally wasting loads of your precious time on nothing, and are painfully aware of it. That's unacceptable. The game is much too large and wide to comfortably support a strong storyline, which leads to unbalanced progression rate where you can effectively grind for 10+ hours in a row with not a single bit of new choice-based dialogue with your crew mates, then spend 3 hours in a row running around in cities and watching those aforementioned "flying from orbit to orbit" animations with no combat action whatsoever to look at people yammer and yammer, and run from one NPC to the next delivering and receiving quests... And when you're done? Rinse repeat. BW started this with Mass Effect 3, made it worse with Dragon Age Inquisition, and instead of learning anything, kept going further in the same - and in my opinion wrong - direction with MEA.

A company who in the past was known for the most powerful storytelling and narrative on the PLANET, has for the third time in a row (fourth if you count Dragon Age 2) decided to go the way of Bethesda, and basically do what Bilbo Baggins once said: Spreading too little butter on too much bread... when their business is the butter, not the bread.

The multiplayer is amazingly fun, and addictive. But it suffers from some real issues that need fixing. While I've never liked automatically enabled VoIP since all that does is force you to manually mute everything to avoid hearing 100db white noise and heavy breathing on the other end every 20 minutes, the real issue is in the laggy game play. 90% of the time it works great. Then comes the 10% that appears in almost every game: Enemies teleport, shoot at you through walls, ignore your abilities, are immune to your shots, or activate melee death animations from two stories below you and 20 meters away. It's frustrating, enraging even.

But at the end of the day, the point is this: While the truth is that the game has issues, that same truth is that the game is fun enough to be worth those issues. Aside from the design choice of putting too much focus in open world, the only real problem with MEA is it lacks polish. And patches can fix that.

MEA has my recommendation. Easily. 8/10.

I've played all 3 previous ME titles many times through and while this isn't quite as good as the previous series (nostalgia could be biasing my opinion a bit here) it's a great game in itself. The vehicle exploration is a joy and the planets are amazing looking. I love the combat system, especially the biotics combat and the sniper rifles. There are some things I'd like to see improved or added to the game that being said. The 'from space' planetary exploration is a bit mundane and lacking a sense of discovery and exploration. The map is a bit wonky sometimes not letting me set my personal waypoints exactly where I click, resulting in me clicking elsewhere on the map until the waypoint shows up where I want it. Lastly, a lack of indicator that you've completed all the conversation tree options on a given individual is annoying, and results in many "Hi"/"Bye" conversations that I don't feel are really necessary if a better indicator system was in place.

Overall, I'm really enjoying the game and looking forward to where they take this game and its planned expansions.

In those 70 hrs of gametimes the worst is probably dying and not ressing, or not loading game after, prety bad bug. Found workaround for it so it didnt affect my save. Also strike teams bugs out. And i got stuck in jump animation for 30 seconds. For quest interactions animations they do bug out sometimes, u look wrong way or players all look opposite way. Nothing that prevented me from playing the game really. So i will take 1 point for story and 1 point for bugs. I think 8 is a fair score anyway. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I never write a review, but as I loved this game so much I will. The story was short but amazing - please don't just play the story and leave out all the side bits as a lot of the quests actually sit well with the story. I haven't finished the game as of yet, I am on the last mission which is on hold - until I have done the whole game including all tasks.

I am well over 70 hours in and at completion of 58%. A lot of the reviews on here moan about animation and looks ect. However, the animation is amazing considering how much content is available there is a few lip sync issues ect but the developers have released a patch and are listening to reviewers. I remember the days of eye of the beholder and wizardry series the graphics were - well non existent but the games made up for it in story telling ect.

I have played all mass effect games and dragon age games and love them equally. Reviews these days are mostly based on cosmetic value and graphics and glitches. However all games to start with have teething problems - there is no perfect world - you build and adapt and improve ect. I take my hat off to bio ware - they have made one amazing game and I hope they do not stop making these type of games due to the hate of individuals. Maybe I am just an old fart hehe. Don't be a sheep and follow the quantity of bad reviewers - follow the few and quality reviewers :) try it your self - get a hard copy - play it if you do not like return to shop.

    Positive
Breath-taking worlds to explore - gorgeous scenery.
Engaging romance options and story with fun side quests and intriguing knowledge behind the initiative.
Brilliant combat and is hilarious when you use your mini poc combat revenant :)

    Negative
Some animation problems - however bio ware is fixing this and patch released (not so negative :P)
Travelling to each little planet is long winded but is gorgeous on hdr pc - feels like being in space so can be overlooked.

if I have typos I do apologise I am an old git lol - and please do not troll me for being honest as a relic gamer ;)

TL;DR: In my opinion, it's not the best Mass Effect. But it's still a solid game. This Mass Effect deserves criticism, but not that much.

I've always been a fan of Bioware games. Bought every single game since KOTOR 1. My first Mass Effect was Mass Effect 2, I bought it on Steam during a sale, "Let's give it a try !"
I finished the game in 4 days. 8 hours/day, I finished it in ~ 31 hours. Then, bought Mass Effect 3 and finished it in 30 hours. Then, I did the same with Mass Effect 1. KOTOR was my favourite game, until I met Mass Effect 3. So, as you can see, I'm a fan.

Let's talk about Andromeda. I used the Origin Access to try this one. After the 5 hours of single-player, I was unsure what to do. It was fun enough to play, but it seemed a little generic.
I decided to give it a try. And the start was just like Dragon Age Inquisition : the first hours were boring for me. Just boring, no other words. But I decided to play it anyway (after all, I paid it !)

    Let's talk about :

-Facial animations : They were bad (I mean, REALLY bad) before patch 1.05, and now they seem to be ok (hadn't played it after this patch).
The environments are great though. Even with my crappy GPU, with a mix of low-medium graphics, my eyes were having a good time.

-Characters : many people consider these characters "bland". There is NO bland character, BUT there is no "Garrus-esque" character neither. Character development is nice, everything was realistic enough to "live" in this world.

-Romances : I did only romance 1 character. Good one, not perfect, but I can't say if the other are as good as my romance.

-Gameplay : Better than Mass Effect 3. The jetpack is neat, the ennemies are a threat even in normal. Everything is good, except the AI. The AI is really dumb, but they throw enough ennemies so that you don't rush in like a madman.

-Story : Weeeeeeell. It's okay. Not bad nor great. I just don't like how they made the bad guy. He is a bad guy "cuz 'n stuff" I guess ? I think (and I hope) they will develop his motives in future games/DLCs.

-Quests : Main quest is okay, friends-quests are great, side-quests are... better than Dragon Age ones. It depends a lot of the side quest. But sure, most of the time, they did better than those "Collect 10 minerals".

-Multiplayer : Man, that's haaaard even in bronze ! Unless you play with Sniper Rifles/Melee Classes. Funny though.

As I said, ME:A is fun to play. But be aware : if you didn't like Mass Effect 1 -and hated Dragon Age Inquisition-, you probably won't like this one. Personally, after 60 hours (and 75% of the game) played, I enjoyed it a lot. Not as much as Mass Effect 2 or 3, but more than in Mass Effect 1.
The only thing that really threw me off was the light hearted tone. It replaced the relatively dark tone of the other Mass Effects. Sure, they nailed it in the Citadel DLC of ME3, but in this one, that's too much comedy for me. At least I laughed quite a lot :)

Ok let's start off with the obvious, the animations in this game are horrible and I think more time should have gone into testing this game before its release, this can also be seen in the amount of bugs and glitches the game has (we're talking Skyrim level here).

As for other negative aspects; The story isn't spectacular, the lighthearted options (casual/emotional) for dialog aren't that well written; but well delivered to be fair and the user interface has no logical design to it; its honestly just an endless sea of menu's and folders, and and just a personal issue is having to check your email on the Tempest (I know it was like this in the trilogy too but now you have the forward stations on each map, no reason we can't check there) is a pain.

Now that that's out of the way onto what I like about Andromeda, and there is a lot to like:

The combat is easily the best the series has had so far, the jump jet adds so much here allowing the combat to be faster and smoother than in previous instalments, the profiles system is fantastic allowing you switch out your powers/abilities on the fly again adding much more variety to the combat than previous games.

The vehicle sections are also the best series has had so far (which admittedly isn't hard after the Mako & Hammerhead), exploring these vast open worlds is actually enjoyable thanks to the Nomad, while I wouldn't mind having a weapon mounted, vehicle combat isn't really missed. The Nomad handles beautifully and being able to mod it and customise the paint job was a nice touch.

Exploration is great, the worlds of Andromeda are interesting & diverse, each with their own personality, story & dangers. It's the first time in a Mass Effect game I've landed on a planet and thought, lets just pick a direction and see whats out there and ended up in an unexpected situation, this kept me engaged enough to keep coming back.

Crafting, aside from the awful UI I mentioned before the crafting system here is fantastic, with enough resources and research you can build any weapon you want (i'm personally loving my sticky grenade firing machine gun with infinite ammo), and it's the same with armour too, augmentations can grant you a variety of perks to use in the field to boost shields, power cool downs etc.

Characters, now I know that Mass Effect has a huge roster of brilliant, irreplaceable characters from the first 3 games and to some no newcomer can ever live up to them, I understand this but at the same time I found myself getting attached to this new crew, Liam & Cora aren't great but Drack, Vetra, Jaal & Peebee are all great additions to the Mass Effect universe and I had a blast exploring along side them. This is helped by the welcome return of Mass Effect 2's loyalty missions.

The enemies in this game are also good, whilst not as bone-chillingly ominous as the Reapers the Kett serve as a decent villain here, their story is interesting and discovering their connection to the other Andromeda residents gives you plenty of reasons to want to shoot them some more.

The Ending (no spoilers), one of the main things I was worried about going into this game was how it would end, after Mass Effect 3 we needed to end this game on a high note and it does deliver, the final mission is so satisfying and whilst the final boss battle is fairly uninspired the ending as a whole is a positive and a great foundation for future instalments and DLC expansions.

So is this the best game ever, no, does it have problems, yes, but is it a good game, definitely. Whilst not quite living up to the hype following the original trilogy Mass Effect Andromeda provides us with a solid foundation to relaunch the series away from Shepherd and the Reapers, it feels very much like a spiritual successor to Mass Effect 1 rather than a sequel to Mass Effect 3 & I can understand why this isn't what some people were looking for but personally I think it's what the series needs to keep going.
Hopefully the issues I raised at the start will be addressed and patched (I know some have already started) so the game can truly shine but as it stands right now I give Mass Effect Andromeda a 7/10

Ok, now I've returned to the game many months later and now that the patches are all in and the disappointment that there will be no single player DLC has passed I'm revising my score.
The animations are much better, the new additions like returning to the character creator after you've started, higher inventory limit, extra free outfits, new weapons, new mods/augments, an extra romance for BroRyder and a nice expansion of the multiplayer (characters & weapons) are all great as well.
While not fixing all of my issues (the menu still sucks) I'm upping my score to an 8/10, still not perfect but definitely a worthy addition to the Mass Effect name.

The characters are entertaining and deeper than people want to give credit for. Vetra and Dracks almost father daughter relationship is a highlight. Loyalty missions are range from fun humorous to painting one character as a badass. profiles allowing you to switch between multiple power loadouts in three button presses makes up for the lack of wheels from previous games and gives you more powers at your fingertips than ever before.

After merely 100 hours of gameplay, In which I covered every possible mission, sidequest and task I could find (I still have a few tasks) I can say this game deserves more love. For a game of this magnitude it is understandable to have some bugs and glitches, but bioware listens to their fans, so I won't count that as failure, they already fixed some major bugs and glitches, and even improved animations.

    The pros:
-Story is interesting, it keeps you on your toes up until the end and you just can't have enough of it.
-Companions are likable, you get to know them and even love them eventually, I can't say as much as ME trilogy (Its a trilogy, you have that built up each game up until the third, unlike here which is the first.)
-Combat system, One of the best features of the game, it's ridiculously fun, Its dynamic, fluent and fast. I really enjoyed this part of the game, much more than the trilogy (which was slower and much more cover and shoot than anything else).
-Graphics: even tho my PC didn't max it out, the game was beautiful, the environments are unique to each planet and system, the sounds, the textures. I have to say they really stepped up the game here.
-Gameplay time: You have tons of hours to put in this game, not counting the multiplayer, if you really want to go through every detail of the game it will take you quite a while to finish (for me about a 100 hours)
-Crafting system: unlike the last 2 games, this one has a pretty decent crafting system, where you get to build your own equip, according to your style. you even get to pick the color of your set, which is a nice touch.

    Cons:
-Dialogs and Character interaction: Throughout most of the game the dialog and the characters are a bit dull. It was hard to connect to some of the characters at first, and I found myself disappointed. Although Mid-late game I managed to get the connection I wanted and I loved it. Yet it is a downside of the game.
-Face animations: The face animations are not the best they could offer, there is a lot of room to improve, hell the 2nd and 3rd mass effect had better more realistic animations than this. At times I felt it was really ruining the experience of awe that you have at first of a game, but yet if you stick around you get used to it.
-Side quests: I've enjoyed some mostly because the combat is fun, but there aren't enough stories in these quests, a lot of them are dull and repetitive, which could have been more creative and memorable.
-Repetitive stuff: A lot of things get repetitive at times, the Asari all look alike (except Peebee), at times you pass through places and the NPC will repeat the same sentence over and over even though you progressed in the storyline. Sometimes it put me off, and it wasn't that much of an experience as I would want it to be.

    In conclusion,
I liked the game, I wouldn't say it is the best Mass Effect ever released, but it is an enjoyable one for Sci-Fi and ME fans.

    Cheers.

While it does have issues (animations can be pretty rough, a few bugs forced me to reload earlier saves etc), it manages to recapture the spirit of Mass Effect; great characters, interesting plot and brilliant world building. Add to that vastly improved combat and this game is a worthy addition to the Mass Effect universe.

This game is going to be the most underrated game of the year or maybe even the last decade. In short i believe most peoples judgement about this game is clouded because of the facial animation and bugs pre-patch 1.05. This review is based on the game after patch 1.05.

First of I've never been a fan of the mass effect series since i didn't enjoy the combat and the clunky gameplay one bit. This mass effect however has solved that, the combat is extremely enjoyable and gives you options. Want to be an incredible bad-ass? Easy enough! you can upgrade some biotics grab a shotgun and have fun dashing into melee range and decimating enemies. Cover based shooting more your thing? Go into the tech tree grab a sniper or assault rifle and enjoy classic cover based shooting. Whichever style you choose to go your guaranteed to have a fun time with the overhauled smooth fast paced action oriented combat.

The second best part of the game is the sound. The sound in combat is extremely good, every sound is clear and has deep impacts backed up by a more ambient soundtrack that simply meshes very well together with the environments.

Now for the graphics, the game looks great. The environments are beautiful, the visual effects are top notch and the animations are great as well outside the facial animations. The facial animations however have become decent enough since patch 1.05, it will not break your immersion like before!

The story itself is a simple generic sci fi story, nothing special but it is good enough to keep you entertained if you are not looking for something deep.

The questing is a little disappointing, a lot of side quests fall in the generic MMO side quest category even the more important side quests for your companions sadly. Solving the puzzles at monoliths and overtaking enemy towers is fun at first but this as well gets repeated to often. The main story itself still does offer a decent variety of missions so on that area it is fine.

What is bad in this game is the space parts where you have to fly around in the galaxy to go to different mini open worlds. Even with the newly introduced skip function it still is very time consuming and occasionally you'll spend half an hour going from talking to someone in one city to another and repeat. It really is that bad. I think about 25% of my playtime is spend in just travelling between planets and walking in the cities. A good tactic to reduce this is simply taking on all quest you can at once in a city or planet and stay as long as possible in the open world you chooses and complete everything in it so you don't have to come back.

Another minor annoyance in the game is some flickering glitches. For example some destroyed boxes that emit smoke particles causes constant flickering when looking at it, this glitch did happen more then i'd like.

Overall i would say this game deserves a score between the 7 and 8. It's not perfect but the visuals, gameplay and sound is top notch and more then make up for some other average to bad parts in the game. If you are looking to have a fun time with an open world third person shooter which allows you to move fast and freely you are in the right place!

Gameplay: Fluid, fun, had a lot of different abilities to choose from. You could diversify your skills and swap them out on the fly based on your situation, or you could heavily specialize and just redistribute your skills on the ship, depending on your playstyle. I liked the mobility the jetpacks offered, both in combat and exploration. The car took some getting used to but I also appreciated the maneuverability of it. Made exploring large areas quick and fun. The world designs had a lot of variety, and were expansive enough that you got a nice open world feel without it being overwhelming. A

Story: Dialogue could sometimes be a little awkward, but the VO was generally on point. A lot of criticism is circulating about how comparatively plucky and cocky Ryder is compared to Shepard, but I thought it was very fitting to the brazen spirit of exploration encapsulated by a pioneer. You don't always get the option to not be plucky and cocky, but generally speaking (if you are opposed to sass) you can avoid this by choosing options other than "casual" in conversation. That said, despite the occasional dire circumstance, be prepared for a more optimistic tone than you are used to out of a Mass Effect game. B+

Overall, I give the game a B. I had a lot of fun with it, and I hope they follow it up. They set up a lot of potentially interesting threads that I'd love to see explored. Would recommend.

Writing is a little uneven but there's good in there with the bad. Crew isn't SR-1/2, but I don't think they could of outdid the originals no matter how hard they tried.... well, okay, Vega is easy to beat and nobody on the new crew is as bad and neither is any mission as bad as Vega's pullup challenge.

Music is good, but not operatic, and a little sparse.

    7.5/10 overall

Yes there where some problems at launch, but most got fixed and for some minor remaining stuff there are mods. Get it, it's worth it!

When a working crack came out I figured I would at least give it a go. I have to say, aside from the amusingly horrible facial animation of Ryder, Addison and a handful of other minor human characters, I found the game to be on par with many other AAA day one releases. While a little shorter on content than previous Mass Effect games (and a lack of Journalist assault), the game was an overall enjoyable experience. Some characters seemed lazily written, but overall there was enough depth for it to not write the game off. After completing the game over a series of two weeks, and the ending sequence leaving a smile on my face, I can happily say that while this isn't my best experience with the franchise, it certainly isn't the worst and if another were to come out, I would happily purchase it (like I have gone back and done with this game). If you aren't someone who wants to jump on the trendy Andromeda hate train or claim it's all because of 'muh identity politics' or the like, then you may as well give it a chance. After all, anyone into video games should have really learned their lesson about believing hype by now. Expand

To be frank, Bioware has had a bad record of making sure their games were polished and finished before release. Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3 being the well known examples of this occurring. This coupled with the recently released information from Kotaku made me understand just what went wrong with this game.

That being said, after finishing up the main story, I actually ended up liking ME:A. It has its moments. The game prior to the updates was full of animation issues and glitches. That's something anyone could tell you. While I didn't personally run through many of the glitches myself, I wouldn't doubt that they were there. My main issues regarded the lack luster animation, poor character creation, and admittedly cheesy vocal lines. The lack of sufficient facial expressions to match the emotion of the voice actors portrayed me go from enveloped in the plot to cringing. Character creation felt like they took several steps back from what they had before. Dialogue would also have me cringing from time to time.

Despite everything, however, I thought the story was overall pretty good. Some quests ended up being really enjoyable to the point where I'd replay them just to reexperience that enjoyment again. The companions had some nice quirks about them that made me love each one. Not to mention the sense of unity the crew had was nice. Especially when it came to the final battle. Which, in my opinion, was a fun battle to play through.

I won't lie that the game is without flaws because it for sure has its moments. However despite everything, I had to give it an 8.0 because I honestly enjoyed the game after everything was said and done. And I'm definitely interested in finding out what the future DLC's bring.

What really made the game for me was the new crew. With the exception of the human cast, all have diverse personalities that meld wonderfully together. Jaal, Drack, and Vetra are great additions to the cast and I could never decide who to take.

As for the world building, it felt empty. Before release Bioware boasted about the game's size, which proved to be too much. Too much empty terrain with no landmarks to dot it. The endlessly spawning bad guys didn't help. At least in Inquisition when you cleared a camp it stayed clear, instead of 10 more kett running in when you turn your back.

Facial animations. Never Bioware's strong point. The only characters who had problems were Sara Ryder and Miss "My face is tired". As for the latter, she has gotten a face lift and someone taught her how to emote. Sara...... is fine if you don't use the default face.

Overall, this is the definition of a meh game. I just added the extra points because of how much I love Jaal and his romance.

I can't say why exactly but Andromeda works for me. I'm a bit disappointed that there's no epic music but at the same time Nomad's humming soothes me, as does exploring beautiful planets like Elaaden and Eos.

Scott Ryder is not Shepard. He never says anything controversial or emotional but then again, this works for me. He's chill.

I finished ME:2 and ME:3 really fast (2 or 3 weeks) because they were so exciting and thrilling so I binged like a kid on candy. I'm still playing Andromeda. Andromeda came when I was really struggling with depression and it helped me a lot.

Kett is enemy are AMAZING and I loved fighting with them. That first mission on Eos when you have to destroy Kett Base and encounter your first Ascendant was so cool (INSULT. Animal! Our perfection cannot be defeated! -- and then I wrecked their base)

Characters were a bit disappointing (I'm trying not to be too negative): there's just too many of them and I don't end up feeling that much for most of them. Lexi is never going to be Liara and SAM is never going to be as cool as EDI.

I thought romance scenes were done well. Sure, characters you can romance are not HOT but at the same time maybe the game does teach you to look beyond the surface and appreciate the fact that someone sense you a thoughtful message after you spend some quality time together. It's not about the looks but also about appreciation. I get why people are annoyed but at the same time things work if you don't take it too seriously and then are pleasantly surprised how romance turns out.

Other than Jaal (superb voice actor) and Peebee, other character just didn't convey much emotion. Liam was my least favourite character but that's more because he reminds me of some jerk from high-school I'd rather avoid. I've never met anyone from London but he did make me hate him so I'd say his voice acting did provoke emotions? I also disliked Jacob and Javik. Drack seems like a token Krogan.

The game's biggest downfall is that we all end up comparing it to Mass Effect. But it's not Mass Effect. Mass Effect we know and love is over. This game is Andromeda: Inspired by Mass Effect. But I DO like it. I give it a solid 8/10 and I don't regret for one second that I bought it.

Multiplayer is also fun and I hope they improve those little things (music) and big things (depth to characters, some proper choices and the ability to pick your dialogue). For me the biggest plus is that for me, I get to play it much longer than ME2 and ME3 and I find it calming. It's not a game that's epic like 2 and 3 but it's a game that's good and playable.

I'm not a paid reviewer or a shill. I'm a real honest person and I give it 8/10

The game is definitely buggy but not worth a 0/10 with any perspective.
The game's main story is fine-ish, it isn't great; but the game shines in player stories, ryder is but a vessel for the player to express themselves and mold the world accordingly. Each friend mission and heleus assignment is a literal ride for players to actually role-play as a pathfinder; does the player keep on focusing on just his vengeance against the archon or does he help the angara, etc.
The world is brimming with potential; Though sadly we won't be seeing our decisions take fruition in the next part(i really do hope EA reconsider it)
The gameplay is simply put fun. On hard it is challenging enough to be fun without being pathetically imbalanced against the player; if i died i felt like it was my f*** up rather than cheap damage from enemies. The enhanced mobility in combat adds more than just speed to the combat but verticality also. The weapons are satisfying to use, the exploration is fun as well though platforming feels like a missed opportunity here. The AI though leaves a bit to be desired as sometimes they are smart to flank you and even flush you out of cover using grenades etc. forcing you to use the mobility that you have but sometimes they get stuck in between deciding whom to target(happened to me in 10% encounters across the 50 hour playthrough). The new dynamic profile system is fun to tinker with as well
The graphics are a mixed bag; facial animations suck to be put bluntly(Except for those few scenes which seem animated differently). The environment on the other hand though ranges from breath-takingly gorgeous or just meh(still miles ahead of stuff like no man's sky or the planet explored in previous mass effects). The moment when your ship docks in and you view the planet on foot is always makes you feel enticed to explore it.
The music is good, not too bad not too great but it does fit in well with whatever happens on screen(At least on my playthrough)
The menus are good and easy to navigate but they are overly done, to the point of being irritating. Even after the skip patch the planet zoom in to zoom out remains which loses novelty after first 3 times and then becomes irritating.
Overall, even after the patches the game remains buggy but never enough to outshine its strengths. The game is easily a 7.5/10(have to give 8 as metacritc doesn't have decimal ratings). Fun to play and a great sandbox to roleplay your character in; if you can bear through the irritating menus and occasional glitching

To start, there is the story. Right form the getgo, there is an atmosphere of positivity and possibility, that stems from pioneering. By moving away from the reaper storyline, we also move away from a constant sense of impending doom. I think that suits the games theme of exploration very well. I am a big fan of the ME trillogy, but having Shepard do relatively unimportant assignments, while there were vastly more urgent matters to attend to, allways kind of bugged me. This time around, the story takes a more subtle and relaxed course, allowing you to immerse into the smaller story arcs as well.

The voice-acting of the female Ryder (I haven't played the male yet) is realy convincing and immersive. Often she would have subtle and surprising responses that help to create the sense that this is someone with a personality and emotional depth.
You can choose the type of response, divided in a number of possibilities, like emotional, professional, casual or logical etc. helping you to be the Ryder you can get behind.
Sure, the facial animation is not up to todays standards, but the the graphical quality make up for that, and it rarely bothers me, if at all.

The other characters on the team don't seem to be popular among a lot of reviewers, but I think they are convincing. I guess it's the same for real people, it's down to personal tastes.

The new galaxy is a big place with a lot of room to gather materials, build settlements, meet new people etc. What bothered me a bit is that this is a whole other galaxy, yet everything looks en acts very familiar. The other species are all too humanlike, who also use very recognisable technoligy. Too me it feels a but unlikely, but like in ME 1 to 3, I can look past that.

As many others have said: the combat is great! The lessons from the trillogy have clearly been learned. To add to that, you now have a jetpack mechanic, that allows you to jump higher and make horizontal leaps. The combat now takes place in three dimensions and the environment matches that. I was pleasantly surprised when I jumped onto a building to escape from a large creature, only to find that it jumped right after me, forcing me to stay mobile. Combat has become even more dynamic and is a realy big plus. As a bonus, there is also a six wheeled rover to help you across the large maps. And this time arouind, they've gotten it right.

My advice: Definately worth a try for sci-fi and ME fans, but don't expect ME 1 to 3. It's a different game in it's own right. Have fun!

Firstly, I wanted to give this game more of a 7.5, but I didn't want it to fall into the yellow and decided on an 8 instead.

Secondly, BioWare, if you're reading this, I hope that you consider releasing some sort of anything for Andromeda at some point, or a new game connected to it.

Mass Effect Andromeda is a great game. It's got flaws, no doubt. It could really do well with even just one piece of DLC (for reasons I won't spoil). And I'm saying this as someone who started playing Mass Effect way back when Mass Effect 1 was the only ME game we had to play. I'm saying this as someone who has been through the original trilogy over and over, ad infinitum. I'm saying this as someone who has totally recognized that BioWare has always had funky animations in every single game they've released since ME1 and Dragon Age.

When I came into Andromeda, the animations were really the last thing I even focused on or concentrated on. They were there, I could see them, but never at any point did it ever seem so drastic that it warranted an internet mob. I truly believe the aforementioned mob was less inspired by BioWare animations and more about the fact that there were LGBTQ+ themes in this game. That there was more than one trans person in this game. That even Asari can be heard speaking about gender and how they present themselves, and these are themes strewn all over the game (themes that make sense, especially in a future where humanity has overcome most of their prejudices against other human beings). I really feel this is the biggest reason that (we'll just call them 'a certain crowd') a certain crowd latched onto ME:A as a point of major grievance. Because it finally deviated from the kind of cowardly ways of the original trilogy where, for example, Mass Effect 2 you had what I would consider a cyberpunk/space masterpiece ... except it was extremely straight and a huge deviation from romantic themes we had only just had in the first iteration of the game (although Tali should not have even remotely stayed straight, just something I wanted to throw out there).

All that aside, all my personal speculation about why this game got bombed by mobs of people, I can finally actually talk about the game.

ME:A starts out with a real hard scifi kind of feel to it. A little different than the trilogy, but the Mass Effect feeling is there, and there's also a new feeling about it. You're thrust 600 years into the future and immediately, everything's going wrong. But then you get a ship, and it is an amazing ship. It's not the Normandy, but it's just as nice and shiny as Shepard's. It took me a while to get used to Ryder, but going back in for a replay, I find myself walking around the ship, just the ship and it makes me feel like this universe really deserves to continue, that it deserves to be here. It's a feeling I can barely describe, but it's a feeling that I don't ever really get outside of the Mass Effect series.

It almost feels like I'm back home, despite my feelings about not being able to be Shepard ever again (or at least for now).

But then you go out and you explore and while the worlds I think are quite a bit bigger than they need to be, I think molding the ME universe into a massive expanse is the right direction for the game. Because unless BioWare turns this franchise into an MMO and gives us some kind of infinitely persistent world, I have nowhere else to go to soak up this much Mass Effect, and Andromeda has a lot of Mass Effect to drink in.

I also come to ME for the romance though, and if someone's telling you they don't, there's a 50/50 chance they're lying to you. Full-stop. The entire Mass Effect trilogy was an on-going romance between my Shepard and Liara, and I expected nothing less from Andromeda. So of course, I met Peebee, or space girlfriend number two. In regards to romance, BioWare really went all out in Andromeda. I think (not entirely sure because I have a bad memory for specifics) every single person on your ship is romancable, and not only that, but there are even romance-inclined NPCs on the Nexus. So there's a ton of romance to be had in this iteration.

The combat in ME:A is the best its ever been in the entire series, and the addition of profiles and jump boosts just makes it even cooler. On top of that, two years later, I'm still playing its multiplayer companion, and so are a ton of other people.

This is already really long, but I recommend ME:A if you haven't played it. My only gripe is that the Asari could use more unique faces and it desperately needs BioWare to return with some DLC. That's it. Those are the only real issues here. Take a look at the critic scores versus the review bombing that happened on the user score side and you'll quickly realize that there's an ulterior motive behind the red.

Andromeda is a great game, with a great main story, with enough content, not unsual having 20+ tasksquests open at the same time, that got bad reviews by 5 year olds repeating what other 5 years old said in hope someone think they are game experts.

As flawed as it is I'd still give it an 8/10. But I wouldn't recommend playing it without two dozen mods. With mods I'd give it a 9/10. Doesn't seem like a big difference in numbers, but the experience is very different.

Looks good, FPS are pretty high (80-144). The movement boosts are nice. Menu/UI system is awful. It's made all the more confusing by the fact that you cannot change

Looks good, FPS are pretty high (80-144). The movement boosts are nice.

Menu/UI system is awful. It's made all the more confusing by the fact that you cannot change weapons, mods, and consumables except at specific locations, which is ridiculous. You're essentially given a "look no touch" menu.

You have to stop the game, and do a web search for "how do I equip a weapon", "how do I equip a mod". Just ridiculous.

They put up messages on your screen that disappear before you get to read them.

Scanning planets in the ME series has always been pretty bad, but having to look up a tutorial on how to even do it in this version is ridiculous. There are a lot of things like that which are poorly described/indicated/demonstrated, including the mining.

The handheld scanner is unpleasant to use due to the intensity/severe lighting change.

There are so many things that seem really unpolished. One such thing largely ruins what could be very rewarding close range combat - you can't do melee attacks unless you have a weapon unholstered. The problem with that is the game is not designed for you to normally have a weapon out, because doing so drastically decreases your view/FOV. It makes melee fighting very clunky and uncomfortable.

I see people saying the combat is the best thing about this game, but the FOV issues degrade it so much. Maybe they were able to use the FOV-fix mod.

It's just such a shame when what could be really great games, which obviously had lots of effort put into them, are ruined by relatively small things like this.

The weapon/armor/gear crafting and upgrading is too extensive, complicated, and sucks up way too much time. You can actually just ignore it, but that's not obvious till later in the game.

Your AI repeats the same sentences over and over, and it gets extremely aggravating to the point where I had to play with no sound.

You need dozens of mods to be able to enjoy this game without frustration, but at the end of 2020 it seems that the mod tool hasn't been working for years.

After I completed the whole campaign I hopped into a multiplayer game and it seems to be co-op vs AI. I was seriously underpowered so it wasn't even worth playing. So I went to play the MP tutorial mission instead and still I was super underpowered for what they throw at you. It seems designed for pay to win. They want you to pay to level your character and buy gear. That was pretty lame, so I left.

Multiplayer doesn't let you assign powers to keys/binds like the singleplayer does. So you'd have to change your binds instead.

Great game! I played two years after the release, so I didnt experiment with the bugs. If you played the old Mass Effect Games and search for more similar content you will enjoy Mass Effect Andromeda. It follows the same formula that made the franchise a sucess. If you are looking for something new, you may be disappointed.

+ Very enjoyable gameplay, one of the best TPS out there...smooth, fluid, lot of options, very dynamic

+ Crisp, good visuals + Soundtrack...while not as Memorable as previous ME games, I eventually warmed up to it. More "ambiental, especially during exploration, haunting "Vangelis"-like tracks really complement feel of mysterious, alien "frontier" + Plenty of options when it comes

+ Plenty of options when it comes to customization your playstyle, with talents/abilities and extensive weapon upgrade/crafting system

+ Good crew...not as good as ME2/ME3, but still has that "Bioware magic" to it. Vectra, Pee Bee, Jaal...are excellent additions, on par with best in series.

+ Some very good quests ( mostly companion related), Ryder backstory, and good main story moments

    + Galaxy map

    - The game still has some significant performance/glitches issues. I've played it years after release, while it's nothing too offensive, it's noticeable game came out in a rough state

    - Too big for it's own good...bit too many "fetch quests", Kadara and Elaaden feel a bit rushed.

    - NPC models, some scenes and facial animations ( memes are absolutely overblown and while it's better than in most rpgs, it's not on par with previous games)

    - Plays it bit "too safe" with setting/lore

Overall: very good game, that almost reaches "classic" status.

To preface, I adore the original Mass Effect trilogy. I think they're fantastic and iconic, and I don't believe that Andromeda is a "worthy" sequel to them. However, I love this game for some different reasons than I do its predecessors.

First off, the concept is great. Going to a new galaxy and exploring a single cluster is a great idea for both a standalone game and one that sets up a sequel. Unfortunately, BioWare wanted to make a sequel to this game, and its story takes a hit because of it. We miss out on a lot of answers that were promised by the game, and that sucks. The plot writing isn't fantastic, but I really enjoyed the characters.

Standard BioWare stuff by now - good characters with complex relationships with the main character. I instantly liked all my squadmates, especially Vetra, Drack, and Jaal. I always found Liam's voice acting a bit distracting, but ended up liking him too. The movie night mission was adorable, and it only solidified my love for these characters. The Tempest feels more alive than the Normandy ever did. Characters walking around, talking to each other all the time, all within a smaller area. It just feels good.

I like Ryder. You can see in my screenshots for my modified character, but I found the character creator to be quite good, though not groundbreaking or anything. Her voice, general character, and writing were all to my liking, and upon going back to the original trilogy I think I actually prefer Ryder over Shepard. She's just more... reserved, while Shepard is an omnipresent godlike figure with unending charisma and badassery. I love all that, but Ryder just feels more human, and I like that.

I think the open world worked for this story. I don't think I would have liked it as much if it was just a linear game, but I owe much of my enjoyment to two factors: land traversal and combat. They're so, so smooth. The new profiling system is fantastic. Switching between different profiles on the fly with access to all abilities is THE direction Mass Effect should take, because if there's one thing most people could agree on with this game it's that the combat is excellent. Jumping, dashing, hovering, shooting - it's all just so fun, and the sound design in combat is better than ever. Every bullet feels like its taking a chunk out of the enemy, y'know? I also MUCH prefer the adaptive cover system in this game. Going back to Mass Effect 3 after this just feels... limited.

And the Nomad is just fun. Zooming around and struggling up mountains never ceased to entertain me, so I never really minded the "empty" open worlds people describe. When Eos finally completely opens up to you... ooh, it made me so giddy. I loved exploring Eos, and the first time I encountered I got so excited.

I'd rate the planets by most enjoyable to me as such:
    1) Eos (setting the scene, it really made an impression on me)
    2) Voeld (the Kett bases were loads of fun)
    3) Kadara (more diversified than the others)
    4) Elaaden (the most empty of the planets, the mysteries don't amount to anything)
    5) Havaarl (linear, has the worst side quests)

There's also a new conversation system, which I like in theory, but in practice it doesn't do much to diversify Ryder's personality or change the outcome of conversations. Paragon/Renegade is inherently replayable, and while I vastly prefer emotional/logical style, it doesn't realistically give you the control it should.

There's also a crafting system, and I hate crafting systems, but I got the hang of this one pretty easily and I even started making some insane weapons that only amplified my already great enjoyment of the action.

After I got all invested in the exploring and the fighting, I stumbled upon Liam's loyalty mission, upon which I was shocked back into reality and went, "Oh yeah! I'm playing a Mass Effect game!" For the next forty minutes I was playing a linear Mass Effect story with tight character writing and dialogue, some genuinely funny lines and clever scenarios. Then it was over, and I was back to the open worlds of Andromeda.

As much fun as I had with this game, Mass Effect is at its best when its telling linear stories with a strong story. This isn't that, but I'll probably still replay it one day.

Oh, and don't get this game for the multiplayer. It is soulless, weirdly designed, and kind of dead on any difficulty other than Gold or Platinum. And that's coming from someone who sunk a good couple hundred hours into Mass Effect 3's MP.

It's actually quite entertaining. Exploring new planets and making them more viable for settling, driving around in the Nomad and jumping around with the jumpjet. Animations are bad, sometimes its buggy and the UI is horrible, but it's still fun

Mass Effect Andromeda is a game that receives a lot of flack from players and critics alike. Many people say the game is buggy, or it doesn't look good, or the animations are weird. I, however, did not listen to critics and went into the game with an open mind.

Let's start off with the facial animations. Are they wonky? Yes. Do they break the gaming experience? Most of the time, no.

Let's start off with the facial animations. Are they wonky? Yes. Do they break the gaming experience? Most of the time, no. The main character where they get in the way is Addison on the Nexus, but that's the bad egg of the bunch. The vast majority of the facial expressions are expressive, depending on the species, it's a fantastic use of animations.

Game play: The most fluid in the series. No more clunk, no more funk. The game play allows multiple ways to play, and feels light and aggressive. It's rich(er) crafting system allows the player to create weaponry from various different arsenals. The game play, leveling, purchasing, choices, and crafting cause Mass Effect Andromeda to be the most RPG game of the series, beating the original.

Story: The story is a fantastic fresh idea of facing off against a new alien race. Are there flaws? Obviously. I've nitpicked several minor details but overall it's a great story-line.

Atmosphere: Absolutely beautiful. Every planet has its own unique set of wildlife, challenges, and atmospheres. Many people either quit out on the weak starting planet, or the overdrawn ice planet, which is a fair point, those planets do drag on... While in my personal opinion, Havarl, the best planet, doesn't get enough screen time. Either way, the game, especially after lighting patches, has beautiful planets and rich atmospheres.

The game had many issues when it released, but I believe this was EA to blame for rushing the release. Despite the flaws, Bioware did their best to fix the issues, beautify the faces, intensify the lighting, increase carry weight, and improve strike force features within the game.

Overall, this game is a mid-high 8 and marks itself as my favorite in the series so far. The game gets too much hate, and I definitely do recommend playing it.

Not as great as ME2 or 3 but its a hell of a great start to a new trilogy and FAR superior to ME1. Yes it was buggy at launch but all that has been fixed now. I know its fashionable to hate EA for its many MANY evils but this game is absolutely worth playing and not at all worthy of the hate it received.

Great graphics though not as much soul as the previous series. Just playing the intro of the original Mass effect tells you every thing that this game is missing. Though so much better then general opinion. I have 150 hours in the game and counting. I just wish they would have structured, improved the pace and the story better. Then did away with the annoying grind.

I know its 2021 and this is a four year old game but Mass Effect Andromeda is an example of a decent game being killed off by gamers/reviewers expecting too much. Instead of reviewing the game for what it is people reviewed the game for what they were expecting it to be. I agree it doesn't hold a candle to the original trilogy but that doesn't mean its a bad game. Instead of reviewing the game for what it is people reviewed the game for what they were expecting it to be. I agree it doesn't hold a candle to the original trilogy but that doesn't mean its a bad game. Companies like EA don't care about fan bases they care about their bottom line. So when a game launches and people start writing negative reviews about things like facial expressions and "ME2 was so much better" "The characters aren't as pretty" etc. EA only notices the negative reviews. If people actually reviewed the game with an open mind instead of comparing it to the trilogy or focusing on trivial things like facial expressions (later patched) we would have seen more effort put into this game. Bioware is known for their DLC. Looking back at ME2 and ME3 the DLC for that game was great. Perhaps if EA didn't toss the game away within weeks of the launch due to people whining over stupid things we would have actually seen some DLC added to this game instead of just some overpriced cosmetic crap for Multiplayer. Thankfully there is another Mass Effect game in the works and EA didn't just dump Bioware like they are accustomed to doing and much like Andromeda I will go into it with an open mind and not expect it to be Mass Effect 4. I realize these things can be subjective but just scroll through the negative reviews and see what people complained about.. I'm not exaggerating when I say everyone was concerned about trivial things. Writing negative reviews because all the female characters aren't supermodels or some of the animations are broken etc have consequences not only on the developers but also on the gamer in general. Mass Effect Andromeda is a good game. It could have been great had gamers not immediately dismissed it out of the gate. Expand

The Turian voice acting... is ok. The story doesnt hit me as well as the old series did, nor does the overall concept of it. Very few enemy types leads to repetitive combat. They took some of the better elements that mass effect 1 had, and tried to combine it with the elements that mass effect 2 did right... And for some reason, they failed at all attempts.

The nice thing is it is more open world, the movement is very nice and well tuned (least on the player side, animations are still hilarious at best), and the research system feels worthwhile... downside is everything is repetitive, very few enemy types, weapons feel completely useless, etc. I would say it has potential to be good... but right now, the damage system is my biggest complaint.. IT FEELS LIKE DRAGON AGE INQUISITION, WHICH I DISLIKED ALL TOGETHER!!!!!

Think of it this way, the Andromeda Initiative started at the end of Mass Effect 1. The game play and graphics are still from that time period (except that this is real life), and they might have picked up some ME2 improvements before they left.

Overall: I enjoy this game a lot because I loved ME1 and there is a of it's soul in Andromeda. However, I wouldn't recommend you buy until this game goes on sale. I'd say a price point of $30 is more appropriate for such an unpolished, AAA Title.
