I made an metacritic account just to rate this game, it's absolutely crap and a big slap to the face for fans, Bethesda games always had it's issues but this is just one insane cash grab.

People exploit the crap out of this bug fest of a game and Bethesda is wasting their time banning people that "talk bad". Its actually easy to level up legitimately by simply exploring and doing a few quests.

At its current state id say stay away. Only buy if it is 15 euros or less as its simply a reskin mod of fo4 which I have also played for 700 hours. I also played the fallout series since Fallout 2.

I do not recognise Bethesda anymore, and at this point I will stay away from all their games.

This game has more problems than features. Bethesda who says that they appreciate and pay attention to the critical input from the players proves in execution, that this is not the case.

#1: Bugs present in Fallout 4 are alive and well in Fallout 76

#2 The architecture and bandwidth capabilities and methodology of the infrastructure that Bethesda chose to host the game are incapable of the requirements. This is evidenced by the following:

    * Lost Quests
    * Lost progression of quests, sometimes resulting in being permanently
blocked from all follow up quests
    * Failure to record items in inventory
    * Failure to record the actual armor that is being used sometimes resulting in the
    loss of the same.
    * Almost all NPCs are completely inactive and sometimes invisible until the player
is on top of them. POP!
    * Server instabilities, loss of connection, failure to actually connect after "finding" a server

Note: All infrastructure and methodology decisions appear to have been from the point
of cost rather than providing any sort of acceptable performance !!!

#3 The game engine is hardly tweaked. The player ends up noticing all too often that the screen is all blurred and waiting for the detail down scaling to "catch up".

#4 Most quests are absolutely non-complete-able without having to grind to the next level or two or ten!!!

#5 The world leveling is absolutely insane, there is no rhyme or reason for the random levels of MOBS that occur.

#6 There is no actual story line, no NPC to give you any sort of reason for doing the ridiculous things that you are being asked to do. To witt : Why the hell would I give a damn about finding all of the jukeboxes in city x or play a musical instrument on the roofs of city x. Most side quests appear to be completely random, are doled out with no interface with anyone asking you to do X because of Y.

    #7 PVP play is pointless.

#8 While Bethesda admit (somewhat) that the game isn't where they intend it to go. At the same time they offer no vision for where it will go.

#9 Did I mention BUGS, Well there are bugs of all sorts, rendering, item placement, broken quests, invisible agro'd MOBS, MOB AI that got dropped on it's head, the inability to snipe MOBS because they respawn and the bodies and loot disappear as you approach their area . .. Unfortunately since Bethesda left all bugs to be fixed by Modders in the past and because they decided to keep the servers to themselves. There is no reasonable expectation that they actually know how to or will fix their BUGS.

#10 With each "patch" Bethesda has released come new bugs and the need to figure out work around's.

#11 Base building is torturous, repetitive and after some time, a joy sucking experience

#12 Even with upped storage, the player is herded into playing Fallout 76 - Storekeeper

#13 I mentioned infrastructure and method earlier but something that becomes really apparent is that they used a singular methodology for inventory that appears to be storing junk, aid, etc as serialized items, thusly loading down server/s (NOTE: I am not convinced that they are not using VMs instead of full servers. Although I am 100% sure that they are not using multiple machines as would be required to keep it all running smoothly and without any popping)

I'm not going to tell anyone, don't buy this. I am going to say though, that if your mind is not addled; if you notice things that break lore or simply don't make a bit of sense and have to stop and ask yourself wtf is going on here; if you do not want to spend as much time tending your inventories as questing; if you are not completely puzzled at the lack of screws released by junking items that are demonstrably loaded with screws, if you are going to ask yourself why do I need these items to repair this? then wait!!! For the sake of your own sanity and so as to avoid something that is at this point, perhaps ALPHA level, servers that have obviously not been stress tested and done on the cheap and a completely directionless software experiment sold with deceptive advertisement by a rudderless vendor of promise and disappointment.

This game should not be acceptable to anyone. All the people that defend this game because of how much fun they had are wrong. You of course can have fun if you are hanging out with people that you enjoy playing with, but that's got nothing to do with the game.
Don't give Bethesda any credit for laziness, they already announced that they're still using this broken engine for their next

The game itself is a buggy mess. Bethesda games are usually this way, but F76 takes it to an unplayable state. My most recent experience involved me having to restart the game because all the walls around me turned bright green. However, when it works, the game can be a lot of fun, despite the lack of NPCs and the flawed CAMP system. Bethesda does claim they are releasing an update to improve it, but the game should never have launched this way. I pre-ordered, meaning I got access to the beta, and the full game feels just as stable as the beta was. This is an early access game and should be priced like one. Save your $60.
On top of all that, Bethesda conveniently doesn't sell this game on Steam, opting to use their own launcher instead. I was fine with this at first, though downloading another launcher on top of Steam, Origin, UPlay, GOG, or whoever makes their own launcher this week, was pretty annoying. However, that also means Bethesda can dodge Steam's liberal refund policy, essentially saying they knew the (rightfully received) backlash would happen. To make matters worse, the collectors edition buyers really got nuked (pun intended). Bethesda charged around 200 USD for the Power Armor edition which came with the game, a map, and a Canvas bag. Although the Canvas bag wasn't actually a canvas bag, it may as well have been a garbage bag. This was straight up false advertising. Bethesda knew, however, and offered buyers five(!!!) USD worth of in game currency.
Save your money, speak with your wallet. Don't support these actions by Bethesda.

This isnt "knowing your product" nor is it "using what we know to our advantage" It is a futile exercise

I recently came back to the game in 2020, and I'm still very unimpressed.

Fallout 76 is a massively multiplayer online game that encourages player cooperation, and paying money in the Atomic Shop (in game purchasing tool to help you speed up your progress or just generally be better at the game.) The game feels very grindy, and by that I mean it will take you a long time to get good gear and loot in the game. A very long time. Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't really fun or polished enough to make all that time grinding worth your while. This feels like it's purposeful, due to how often the game encourages you to spend more cash at the Atomic Shop to acquire resources and gear. Let me remind you that this game's launch date retail price was $59.99. The 'pay to win' feature of Fallout 76 is very annoying, ham fisted, and feels almost like begging. I'm often embarrassed by how much energy the publisher of the game put into begging people for more money.

The story of Fallout 76 is boring, erratic, and not very engaging. The add-ons to the game improved this issue, but didn't make the story good. I wont even explain the story to point out how bad it is piece by piece. That's how boring it is. I'm too bored by it to criticize it fully. Trust me when I say you're not missing out on a lot of interesting and gripping franchise lore.

The gameplay of Fallout 76 is buggy to this day, and pretty boring as far as 'looter shooters' go. There's not a ton of variety in how you dispatch enemies, and the more fun you want to have in the game, the more boring hours you'll have to invest in grinding for fun gear and loot, or the more money you'll have to spend on fun gear and loot. What's the grind like? Ammo is hard to come by, and when you find it, it's not much. You can buy ammo though! Fusion cores, which fuel the game's iconic power armor, burn out quickly and are hard to find. You can buy more though! Legendary enemies spawn very infrequently, and when they do, there's no guarantee that they'll drop really good loot. The loot thing might be a bug though, I'm not 100% sure. Then again, what's a bug and what's a feature is hard to discern in Fallout 76. Overall, gameplay feels rather dumbed down, and not as fun as Fallout 4. the polish is lacking, the fun is lacking, the engagement is lacking, my interest is lacking.

Graphically, the game looks fine, when it's running well. The game doesn't always perform very well graphically, so it can be hard to judge whether or not some textures look horrible, or whether they just never loaded into the game correctly. It's not mind blowing by any stretch, and is outclassed by many games made for inferior hardware.

The music of Fallout 76 is... meh. Repetitive, recycled, and not very noteworthy. It didn't have to be great or anything, but it's definitely not contributing anything meaningful to the game. Best part was the Country Roads cover.

Overall, Fallout 76 is an annoying game in more ways than one. It's a slog to get through without indulging in microtransactions, and nobody in their right mind would suggest you actually indulge in the microtransactions, so the game is just boring and annoying. Some of the add-ons do bring in content that's worth your time, but the game overall is very bad, and the add-ons don't fix anything enough for it to deserve your investment.

And if i want to play the game solo {so that i don't have to re-setup camp every time because some douche put a gaudy palace of horrors where my simple camp was while i was offline} I have to pay extra for that privilege.

So yeah, there may be some new add-ons, but that just wasn't enough for me even at a low price. If I want some Fallout, i'll go back and re-play Fallout 4, or new Vegas or even fallout 3, anything but this- there are just too many great games out there to waste time on anything so mediocre.

Now, I have the runs from dysentery and I am starving from the parasites living in my GI and therefore spend all my time looking for food and water and crafting and camping and all the while I am not out doing any quests. I am at level 15 and am barely surviving. Wow, now that's realistic. The VATS no longer freezes or slows down time, because it is an online game. 76 has no NPCs, which is very disappointing. The graphics are okay but not as crisp and i would expect and I have a 4K monitor. I feel like i am in a bad movie hoping it will get better at some point only to be disappointed again and again.

Unfortunately there are more bad elements to the game than improvements. What I don't understand is how Bethesda came to the decision to take an amazing single player open world game and turn it into a 'P.O.S.' online game. I know is it just wishful thinking, but I want my money back!!!

They existed in almost every iteration of Elder Scrolls, they existed in Fallout 3, Fallout 4, yes they were in Skyrim and yes they were in the first release of Fallout 76. And yet 2 yrs after release....they still persist! Utter incompetence on a grand scale the likes we have never seen before.
With the hype of Wastelanders - I decided to download FO76 one more time and try my character out, nearly a year since I left. Ladies and gentelmen....it took just 10minutes of playing for me to want to bash my computer into a pulp with a baseball bat -- that's how frustrating these errors are. 10 minutes and that's all it took.

My final summary of what's left of 'The once-great' Bethesda is simple - without the modding community to come in a patch every single crap game Bethesda makes...they will just be a memory of the company that once was but is no longer!

I didn't miss NPCs and their life story and liked the terminal/robot/holo way of getting to the point and issuing the next quest. Discovering locations is exciting but there is no "cleared" marker and practically one is expected to return for more scavenge.

Ballistic weapons felt underpowered, not a decent sniper rifle like my all-time favorite New Vegas Anti-Materiel rifle. Melee on the other hands feels very effective: even without building for one, using a legendary super sledge wrecks most enemies pretty quickly. Perk cards are okay but I liked Fallout 4's approach where I could have all the perks I wanted at level 80: hoarding, damage improvements, defenses, crafting, etc. at once. Instead, limited points and card swapping.

Camps and workshops make little sense. Camps despawn and likely won't respawn upon login due to location conflicts. Workshops provide so little resources (just nerfed) that you have to take pick them up periodically or they stop producing.

It's too easy to get overencumbered and thus kissing goodbye to fast-travel. Living like that for weeks makes you appreciate the landscape and hate the middle section of the map as there are very few ramps leading up to it. This comes very annoying when there is a quest stage sending you between the regions or a timed event you won't be able to reach in time on foot.

PvP doesn't seem to be worth it and should have been a separate mode entirely, maybe after one completes the main story and is at least level 50 (the max level for weapons also) so there everybody has an equal start and build/skill is the dominant factor.

There are several dozen major bugs (too much damage bug, stats and cards not working properly bug, uncompletable quests, etc.) so in order to avoid the frustration the early birds have suffered through, I recommend waiting for 6 months and far more impactful patches at least.

This is so bad that only a week after it came out it you could find keys for $25. I bought one and turns out it was a waste of money and time.

It is mostly unplayable for me because in most areas, including all indoor places, it does something I've never seen before which is that it constantly slows my fps down to about 30-40 for a few seconds then snaps back to 60, like it is trying to constantly fight its way through molasses. My Radeon software shows that what it is doing is constantly dropping my gpu usage down to 0% then back up to 95-100%. It also randomly CTD. It still even crashes every time I exit the game even though they said they fixed it in a patch which they didn't. It has horrible hard-lock lag stutters, constant server problems where it says it is having trouble communicating with the server and locks the controls in place until it recovers. It has a constant high ping. It has countless glitches and bugs during gameplay. Constant server disconnects. They took a copy paste version of the Fallout 4 engine, somehow made it look uglier, and somehow managed to make Fallout 4's combat feel horrible. It feels way more clunky, unresponsive, and just bad.

They responded to my ticket describing all of my problems with a generic copy paste response and said they weren't planning on doing anything to specifically make the game run any better. They want to bury this one in the dirt and I don't blame them. Hopefully Bethesda has to shut down and sell their games to a real actual game company.

(No spoilers, but there's a certain bit of monorail infrastructure, in particular . . .) It's just plain fun to stomp around Appalachia. Also, the gameplay is all right, about as good as that in Fallout 4, though VATS is radically changed. I played the game for a while at launch, then again after the recent Wastelanders updated, and I have to say Bethesda have done a credible job of shoehorning some interesting narrative into the game.

On the bad side, my main objection is to the ever-increasing pressure to spend more real money just to be able to play the game. At launch, the Atomic Shop carried only cosmetic items, as originally advertised. Returning to the game, I find that one of the most basic game mechanics - repairing weapons and armor - is now dependent on micro-transactions. It is possible to earn Atoms in-game, but it would be a real grind to earn enough to be able to afford Repair Kits sufficient to to keep up with the rate of deterioration of weapons and armor. If you have a full set of power armor you need to repair, you would need six repair kits (at 50 Atoms a piece, with discounts only if bought in bulk) . . . and simply building more armor is not really an option, because basic materials (screws in particular) are hard to come by.

In short, the game is diverting for a while, even enjoyable, but loses all appeal once it comes down to a choice of futile grinding or spending (even more) real money.

    >bad enemies (they ALL felt reskinned from previous games)
    >Unfun gun play
    >there is no survival aspect
    >you feel like you're playing godmode despite not being in god mode
    >the only thing there is to do is get in groups and chat (as a result of the game being too easy)
    >why couldn't they have made a Fallout 5 except more like Fallout:NV than fallout 4, I wouldn't even care about the outdated engine
    >You could be playing skyrim over this (modded with Fallout weapons into it of course)

Ok, so maybe the last 3 points aren't exactly strong criticisms, But this game comes off as so repelling to fans of Bethesdas other works that i don't even want to talk about it
Not to mention they banned that one guy for abusive language despite him roleplaying as a Country Hick who had survived the apocalypse. I'm not even joking, his name was Nathan the Hick and he was clearly roleplaying as some backward country hick who planned to "eliminate all gays". he then went up to a group of users to share his views (in order to make them kill him) and then let them beat him to death.
I can't tell whats more depressing; that players are willing to make themselves out to be enemies with better backstories than any of the actual enemies ingame due to how bland the whole world is, or that Bethesda has a strict "no fun allowed" policy to obvious roleplayers.
Like are they wanting the roleplayers to only play as kind virtuous people in a post apocalyptic world? Because that's no fun

Regardless, I do not recommend anyone play this game, the only appreciable aspect of it is the player player interactions because everything is so terrible.
literally get any other online mmo, I wouldn't even play this if it was F2P (which its likely to become)

The worst creation of the company of all that I know. Where is the plot? Where is the interest in playing it? Just take the old engine, delete the plot, the NPS, all game mechanics - this is a sign of absolute laziness and greed of developers. I hope no one else will buy **** from Bethesda.

Bethesda broke a winning formula with their bast installments. There is a complete lack of interesting stories, there are no fun characters, PvP is a joke, base building is frustrating, inventory management is maddening, and Bethesda's complete lack of communication to the community is the rotted cherry on the crap cake. The only redeeming quality is exploring a lovely and large world. The game turns it's back on all of the things that made Fallout such an amazing adventure. There is a reason that I have thousands of hours invested into Fallout 3 and NV. Story trees are a big part of the past games and there is none in this game. It takes away the player's ability to make choices that can effect the story line. I can understand some of the changes from a development standpoint as being necessary for an online multiplayer game (such as VATS being changed drastically), however, there are other changes that I cannot look past and thus, a score of four. Should be noted that I own two copies of the game and have invested over 100 hours into it. I'm not just writing a bad review to lower the game's score. Expand

In my entire life of gaming I have never witnessed such a broken, poorly implemented and poorly thought out product. Sure the game can be enjoyable but the plethora of technical issues this game has is unforgivable considering they charged FULL AAA 60$ price for it. There are games in early access on steam right now that perform better with fewer bugs, made by indie devs. What in the actual **** were they thinking when they decided to launch this trash product? Oh and it also has microtransactions, why not right?

A good idea executed badly across the boards, with a lot of evidence that Bethesda did not prioritize the customer with any of their decision-making during the development or marketing of this game.

It is a mediocre effort unworthy of the Bethesda legacy, and offers little of the Fallout brand's personality and style beyond the purely aesthetic, and it doesn't even manage that well.

At its best, Fallout 76 is an opportunity for you and a friend or three to romp around a gameworld made to look like part of the Fallout world, and if all you really wanted out of the game was that, you might be perfectly happy with it.

Don't bother looking for rich story (there is very little), compelling characters (there are very nearly none) or a tapestry of lore to explore (everything you'll learn about post-apoc Appalachia will come from computer terminals and audio logs, with very little exception).

This design decision to have no NPC's and no driving storylines makes playing Fallout 76 feel like a study in futility. You can pick a direction and go in it, but it won't matter. There's nobody of interest to find, no storylines to stumble across and a tremendous amount of repetitious quests that all bleed into eachother after a few hours and become a mindless exercise in numbing tedium.

By the time you wind up having some random nobody from the internet follow you around for half an hour making stupid noises in the Microphone and asking you about your genitals, you might just be grateful for the break in monotony.

But this game is a mess, plain and simple, anyone who disagrees is just a hardcore Fallout fan who doesn't want to admit it and I understand as I used to stand by World of Warcraft till Warlords of Draenor....

But it is overly buggy, rendering is atrocious and the story is from dull to non-existent... The way the game runs is laggy, buggy, rendering is terrible even on a decent speed computer and the fact that the textures and look close up isn't much better than Fallout 4 worries me. Most of the textures and items had been copied over from the Fallout 4.
The game itself... The skeleton is there and I can see its potential, I hm not just here to **** all over the game, there is promise. The story is boring, not engaging and short, the side quests aren't very exciting and make me not care for the characters or lack there of... I think that the game could really benefit from NPCs, maybe add them into a DLC where they come from another vault. The format and the way the game plays seems not player friendly and rushed.
[I do like the new camera system, the idea of the field of view, the attempt at lighting and other experimental features... Also the nuke idea and the new monster are cool]

Overall I can't believe I took the risk and bought this full price, I am in shock and only play now because I feel I have to get my moneys worth.
I would advise against this game till it does a No Man Sky and does a 180 in a year, let us hope for its great future and hopefully Fallout 5

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not once have I finished playing and not been aggravated/annoyed/frustrated with this product. Problems aside (and there are a LOT even for a bethsoft title) a game at it's core should be fun, this is in no way fun. Look at previous Fallout titles and think back to what made them fun:
-A dynamic open world that was challenging and rewarded you for exploration/story
-You had an impact and presence in the world
    -Rich NPC stories
-Quests that made you want to see what happen, not just a run here do X check box

Now strip all that out and you have Fallout 76. This feels more like an experiment that a bunch of modders put out. There are 0 NPCs, quests just appear in your inventory, enemies don't feel connect to the world, half the time they don't respond to being shot, your "camp" has the permanency of a tumbleweed and the presence in the world falls flat when the quest you just completed starts again for the next player. PVP is pointless and you get no reward for it. Heaven forbid you accidentally shoot a player, now everyone in the world gets a lovely notification and a map icon to come kill you. They can follow you around, line up that head shot all while you can't do a thing about it. Teaming up with players is a painful as it sounds. If you are on one step of a quest and your buddy is on a different step, guess what you're not gonna be able to help each other. The game has been stripped of what made it fun all to shoehorn in this multiplayer system that is, also, not fun. There doesn't seem to be an benefit to having multiplayer.

First time i tried to launch a nuke, the parts magically went missing from my inventory to successfully launch a nuke.
The second time i tried. AGAIN parts went missing off my character.
